003Celebration and sadness it's a celebration of watching each of you grow into young adults that sit before us but it's also sad as we realize how fast the time has gone and that we will not see each other as much in the future this class is full of worldclass athletes musicians actors and actresses artists and Scholars and it's been my pleasure to serve as your principal and we're grateful that you chose to make our school a part of your life and the life of your family when you were all freshmen we had just under 300 students our school now has over 500 students you started your journey at the center for modern learning before we moved into our new building a few weeks into your freshman year you've endured a global pandemic a challenging political
004environment and increasing influences of social media but you're resilient and you found your voice to speak up for justice compassion and those less fortunate you're leaders and you seek to leave the world a better place than you found it and for that we're grateful and as we celebrate today my hope is that this is a time of reflection a time of laughter and maybe a time of joyfulness tears please remember to silence your cell phones turn off your snap notifications and remove whatever distractions that may get in the way of enjoying today joining us today in support of our graduates are the District 20 Board of Education representatives from District 20 Administration and of course the staff from the village students you're also supported by family and friends that are here to celebrate with you

008important the support from family friends and faculty have equipped you with the knowledge skills and character to overcome those challenges that lie ahead and as I look out at all of you I can't help but think of my own two sons who sat in similar seats awaiting their diplomas and as a mom I too sat in the stands like so many families here today experiencing the butterflies and anxiety with knowing that um our now young adults are ready to take this next step and as an educator I am also thinking about my fellow teachers that are in this room today these students are here today because of your dedication to their education watching them walk across the stage in just a few moments is the Pinnacle of your success so students please take time today

011and director for assessment jolen [Applause] Patterson thank you Miss habber and thanks again to you and the board of education for your support for our school at each graduation members of the senior class are asked if any of them wish to speak this year we have three students that wanted to share their thoughts with you so please join me as I introduce [Applause] Oles good morning everyone I would like to welcome all of these students friends and families of the class of 2024 the amazing faculty and staff of the village and the distinguished members of The District 20 Board of Education today I have the honor of telling you some about my time at the village and how some of my experiences are intertwined with yours my story starts two years before I would even
012tour the school as a much smaller student I went to an enrichment program called Homeschool Academy we moved out of our hallway at District headquarters one year into a fancy new building underneath a tiny non-traditional high school that same year my older brother chose to trust that tiny high school with his education I was already obsessed with the idea of high school Freedom so his stories about how his classes worked and what he'd do over his long lunch periods were breathtaking two years eventually passed and I started my freshman year my classes were full of new skills and information but I was also learning the language of the adult world and discovering my academic abilities all in one breath I was learning what mistakes looked like and they were far more forgiving than I imagined
013which is good because I was going to make so many more despite that returning to sophomore year I was sure I had high school all figured out I was wrong with the return of grade level electives I had practice working with my peers in problem solving class at times things unfolded effortlessly other times it was a challenge but no matter how much I felt like I was wasting my breath I was learning how to to collaborate with a diverse set of people I loved watching my brother graduate that may and I also knew school would feel empty without him I was right junior year was rough this is probably a sentiment a lot of you can share my summer had been spent working at a camp and I realized I wanted to join the outdoor
014industry instead of working in cyber security like I'd planned and worked towards since I was 12 figuring that out during AP classes the SAT and a shifting Family scene left me feeling out of breath there were a lot of tears and late nights and also some of my favorite moments when I remembered to come up for air from having a sleepover at the village for barbecue class to trying to make paper act like expensive spacecraft materials for space business after that all that was left was senior year like many others my my year was spent exploring my expansive future thanks to the flexibility and empowerment of the village my first semester was spent finishing classes and tying up Loose Ends before I officially graduated in December I then spent a semester at Colorado Mountain College
015in Leadville if I had any doubts about how the village had prepared me for college academics they were gone within a week especially after the previous year college was a breath of fresh air so what do all those experiences have to do with each other laughing gasping sighing sobbing Lots might have changed every year but no matter what breathing was always the key component in moments that felt like forever and moments that were gone in an instant alone or surrounded by loved ones I I was breathing and so we're all of you after graduation we get to choose what to do with a lot more more of our breaths a lot of you might use them to further your education in an area that fascinates you or maybe just to get a college experience before
016joining the Unleashed Adult World some of you may use them to discover different careers you see yourself enjoying a couple million breaths in some of you may seek the Ocean Air Mountain Air Forest air or city air typically that's not what cities are known for with this end of this phase of our life it's a good time to reevaluate where our breaths are going maybe you don't want to spend any more breaths worrying about things that have worked out thus far maybe you don't want to waste your breath complaining about something or someone when you could either find a better way to cope or put some breaths towards figuring out a solution maybe you want to breathe slower and deeper or maybe you want to build a life that makes your heart race either way
017as we leave High School the way we've done things might not work as well as as they did before but hopefully there are a couple things to take away from our time with the village maybe CR taught you how to get organized or Norris taught you how to talk to people with different opinions than you or Nathan taught you to have wild dreams and bring them to reality we have been given a unique education and a unique way how to to practice how to breathe like a functional adult we have worked so hard for the things we want and the teachers at this school have been so supportive in every way now we get to go change the air we're breathing congratulations graduates I would like to introduce our next speaker Lucas [Applause] Anderson remember
018it's it's not too late to drop out but in all seriousness to all of the parents to all of the siblings to all of the teachers and staff members and District board members good morning and to my fellow graduates behold the last day of our K through2 education is upon us the weight of the last 13 years hangs in the air around us today and so let us now reflect on this experience the last 2third of our lives for most of my life I have hated school across three states and five schools I have been fighting an educational system that was not designed with me in mind as a gifted student and as an artist I was constantly frustrated by my daily struggle with school after school that lacked the flexibility to make my education
019meaning a meaningful positive experience but then one night in 8th grade something wonderful happened my family had been looking around at the different high schools available and weighing our options and as part of the process we decided to attend an information night for one strange little school with a funny name we had to climb the steps we had we had to climb the steps of the building before even reaching the two rooms that constituted the whole thing two brightly colored open rooms with only a wall of glass between them and we watched and we listened as a man showed us that my educational future could be different a sister challenged common assumptions about what school had had to be and that gave students a real chance to thrive it was as if I was having
020a great dream the kind of dream that makes you sad when you wake up and I knew immediately that I had caught something spectacular and I could never let it go as all of you before me are extremely aware freshman year was rough I never would have thought that some bat on the other side of the world could have had such an impact on my life but my ninth grade was a masked year throughout the world education was relegated to the sad and sorted space of online calls and social distancing but already the flexibility of this new system was shining upon me for this strange little hybrid School spent paradoxically more time in person than all of the others around me my remaining years at the Village were marked by a slow yet Sunny Shuffle
021to normaly I began to experience it as it was truly meant to run and my life bloomed with an array of new Social and academic experiences I remember the time my friends and I started a started a sword dueling Club at that met behind the school at lunch on Thursdays I remember playing a single board game lasting for several weeks the wrestling of strategic Minds in a game where no one could be trusted I remember when student council set up our winter masquerade oh how the school looked decked in streamers and lights with candles and jars on every table and how happy I was that setting up allowed at me allowed me to be at school for so long in one day a sentiment that would have been unthinkable in earlier years and how could
022I forget working with a class full of friends to design a twister like strategy twister inspired strategy game for microgravity environments in my space entrepreneurship class and how our school broke the program's mold causing so many others around us to follow there was that time in AP Government where discussion about Congress briefly touched on the Rarity of unicorn bites and I will never forget when I watched the sun peek Over the Horizon 9 months ago unable to fully comprehend that my the fact that my last year at this school was beginning and I will certainly never forget the time in beekeeping class when my friends and I performed the crazed spectacle that was Romeo and juel beet a parody of Rome Romeo and Juliet written in Shakespearean verse about chronic B paralysis virus and the
023so bitterly sweet part this last November when one of my closest friends played the music she had written at the voices of The Village less than a month before her last day of school in December this school has taught me so much and I'm not simply referring to the curriculum it taught me how to exist in an environment where I have the freedom to in Independence to take charge of my own life and a way very few other schools have allowing me to grow uninhibited by the claustrophobic and controlling environment I had learned to equate with education it taught me how to organize myself when someone else isn't doing it for me it taught me that I could explore my passions and the incredible sphere of people around me and finally it taught me that
024there is hope it is so easy to look at the modern world and feel powerless it is so easy to think that the that everything that is wrong will always be there and that the block that has fallen upon you is too heavy to move it is so easy to dismiss the dream that the world might change for the better but I am am standing here because I was shown that it is not because I spent the last four years not just seeing not just hearing about but living the proof that people can improve the environment they are in they can give the people around them the opportunity to enjoy the thing they once hated to escape the systems that had caused them so much frustration throughout their lives the school has taught me that
025building a better life for you and the people around you it can be more than merely a wish you think to yourself to yourself when a shooting star streaks across the sky The Village was a dream born 8 years ago out of a mobile unit behind Pine Creek High School with only four teachers and a classroom full of students it has grown from a time when classes were taught in a tent to a source of Hope and strength for hundreds of students each year the school was our principal Nathan's dream and it was the dream of all the teachers who gave up their normal positions to come give this strange little school with a funny name a try it was the dream of all the parents who realized that their children could have something better
026and it was a dream for all of those students whose life it forever changed this school was my dream a beautiful spectacular dream that I have been lucky enough to live in for the last 4 years it's the kind of dream that makes you sad when you wake up so please nobody pinch me I intend to keep dreaming for as long as I [Applause] live next I would like to introduce our final speaker Madison [Applause] dab okay speech writing is not my go-to hobby so bear with me here but here we go today I would first like to welcome Nathan and Lindsay who have provided every one of us with the incredible atmosphere of the village and the tools that we've needed to reach this mile mil Stone in our lives I also welcome The
027Honorable members of the Board of Education and the superintendent to the to the extremely unique graduation ceremony of a school like the village next I welcome all the wonderful teachers of the village who have impacted the lives of every student in this Arena and who have made these last four years Irreplaceable Oh and before I move on if any of you teach teachers might be interested in becoming an Oregon State Beaver just let me know because I would take any of you to college with me anyways now I want to welcome all of the friends and family who have had to sacrifice so much to adapt to the unpredictable schedules of a student at the village and finally my fellow students we're here guys despite coming in into this amidst a global pandemic and suffering
028the recent relapse of senioritis we are graduating I am honored to speak about the endless opportunities that the village has provided us and I am assured by the outstanding success of our student lled groups and events our community outreach initiatives and the sheer determination of our student body that these opportunities have not been taken for granted now some of you may know me as that really tall guy's girlfriend hi Levi and I'm willing to bet that most of you don't know me at all and this drove me to take this final chance to speak about how the village has changed my life and how I hope we will all carry the values of the village into our futures when I was a child and I was asked what do you want to be when you
029grow up my answer never never changed I have always dreamt of becoming a veterinarian though it may seem relieving to have a goal for my future having my mind made up so early has led me to live in anxiety of just wanting to be there already and resultingly I have drowned out the present looking back I've always loved school so much so that my parents couldn't keep me home another year so I'm graduating as a 17-year-old in middle school I was eager to achieve Straight A's and earn an academic certificate after each year I took part in stuco and did njhs and my mind was already planning out my high school credits as soon as my freshman year began I took off my education was finally in my own hands at the Village I worked
030with teachers to constantly evolve my schedule once I finished a class I began the next I doubled my science credits and I never turned down the opportunity to take an honors course now as I stand here before you I have also taken eight AP classes offered at the Village although I still have my exams on Thursday so wish me luck and as I reflect on these classes the stress that I Endure just surges through my mind and I truly fear the memories I missed out on making while my head was stuck in an AP Chemistry Book I am one of the unique artists at the Village who has been painting my portrait of a graduate over these four years every student in this room came into the village as a blank canvas and Nathan here
031gave us a brush in one hand and the teachers gave us a colorful pette in the other for me the flexibility of the village has allowed me to see that every choice that I make right now will help guide me to where I hope to go in the future each semester as I sit down to select my classes I have been grounded in the present as I work to construct a schedule that fulfills my current passions and interests rather than just a list of credits that I feel required to take for my future for those of you in this room who may not have a plan yet I envy the freedom of your mind I am certain that you have been the optimal student at the Village who is leaving with not only this portrait
032but a mosaic of talent and abilities wherever your path is taking you now it now is your canvas whether that may be college or elsewhere and you will paint this future path with the colors of success and opportunity if you take one thing away from my time up here today let it be this time is a gift and the passing of time is inevitable one day the future that we so anxiously wait to achieve right now will become the present and beyond that it will become the past as we continue to do even greater things in our lives so do not let yourself walk blindly in the present but instead immerse yourself in it stay up for that extra hour playing games with your friends close your computer and instead watch your favorite comedy movie
033your sporting event kick up your feet with the junk food that I know your mom advises you not to eat and as my dad always says take a nap kid because one day the ability to pass out on the couch after a long day will be gone and you will never regret taking that nap while you could I am so grateful that the village has opened my eyes to the importance of the now before it was too late and as I walk away from this stage I will always remember to live in the present and I ask you to always remember to make it a great day thank [Applause] you and our graduation would not be complete without a speech from our principal Mr Nathan gorch [Applause] thanks Madison as I think about my graduation
034speech each year I try to come up with a word or phrase that I feel like captures the class and the graduates that sit before me today when I think about the class of 2024 I keep coming back to the same word you guys are powerful we have powerful athletes powerful dancers powerful Scholars and Powerful leaders Now power is often a dangerous word and idea to explore but I want to frame it with a few of the lessons from the Village that I hope we all take with us from our journey as it relates to power lesson number one there is power and optimism and positivity as you know we end each morning meeting the same way we tell each other to make it a great day this phrase is very intentional Our Hope was
035you felt empowered by the phrase every day you see we don't tell each other have a great day because have a great day is very passive but instead you must actively make it a great day through our actions and we hope you take the power of optimism and positivity with you each day for the rest of your life lesson number two there's power and creativity did you know that you can turn a Bank corporate office into a really cool school but in order to do so you have to think about what could be not focus on what is you have to take calculated risks that challenge our own thinking and the thinking of others to invent and create what has never been done before before our hope is you have the courage to take calculated
036risks to create new companies new nonprofits and other organizations that will make the world a better place for you and for future Generations lesson number three there's power and meaningful relationships each of you took the opportunity to find a good Mentor and some of you have even connected with multiple mentors rather than always learning from our own mistakes let's lean on others who are farther in their journey and let's learn from their experiences I personally have multiple mentors in my life who I seek out for wisdom help and Clarity in fact some of them are here today and I'm grateful for their wisdom lesson number four there is power and Community each of you are more than capable of doing things on your own and one thing I know about this group is you are
037fiercely independent but even though you can do it alone it's often better to do it together that way is messy and it takes more time but collectively it's more rewarding as you Journey with others it multiplies your joy and the shared memories will be a highlight of your life lesson number five there is power in making mistakes each of you have missed deadlines made errors betrayed trust or made some other mistake along your journey but we truly learn more through mistakes than successes and my hope is that we have extended you the grace that you needed to take these missteps and to use them to grow growth is not linear it's messy and the mistakes are often turbo buttons to your personal development but the most important lesson I hope you've come to realize and
038understand is that real power actually comes from giving away your power I recently read the book The Power of giving away Power by author Matthew baren and he talks about the idea that there are two types of organizations there's pyramids and there's constellations Pyramid Power structures require you to be above someone to have power and they can often be unhealthy as folks try to ensure their place in the pyramid by holding others down but healthy organizations operate more like constellations as each individual star shines brighter the accomplishments of the group are enhanced you don't need to diminish the light of another for you to have power in fact you have more power as those around you shine the brightest that's the type of environment we've sought to create at the Village one with a flat
039organizational chart that allows each individual to shine and believes collectively we can do amazing things and as we've watched each of you individually shine our community has been brightened and the influence of our community has become greater our hope for you is that you create and develop these kind of organizations for our society and our world that the workplaces sports teams Community groups schools churches and families you're a part of operate more like constellations where everyone has the ability to shine brighter you've been part of a village one where the sum is greater than its parts and our hope is that you go into the world with this knowledge and that you use your power to lift up others for the common good thanks for allowing us to be a part of your journey and

046I will forever cherish and reminisce about my high school memories I made I'm blessed enough to take my education further and study Business and Entrepreneurship at Grand Canyon University where I'll be playing division one online inline [Applause] hockey Isabelle Cameron first I would like to thank my parents who have always had my back and been there for me when I needed them most my mentors and teachers these past four years have always been so kind and helped me when I needed them I would also like to personally thank my mentor for the past two years Susan Nolan for challenging me to be better and keeping me on track last but certainly not least I owe a huge thank you to Quizlet and all the hard work it's done for me the village itself changed my
