010I'm always disappointed when a liar's pants don't actually catch on fire and with that being said I'd be lying to myself and all of you if I tried to take myself seriously give me a speech filled with great wisdom for the future so today I will not be giving a mature speech of that nature one because I don't want my pants to catch on fire and two because that's not me and that is the whole point of this speech being yourself High School is often filled with external pressures to fit in find a group where you belong and avoid judgment from others all of this pressure can create fear of embracing your identity and who you truly are it's easy to fall into the Trap of trying to please others conform to their expectations or
011to follow the path they lay out for you unfortunately doing so can lead to dissatisfaction unhappiness and lack of fulfillment as someone who has been a victim of this fear I can attest to its power throughout high school I felt the pressure to fit in to build facades to hide my true self over time though I slowly found my own power to loosen Spear's grip as I embrace my own identity both my strengths and challenges I realized how freeing it can be embracing your true self can lead to one of the most rewarding aspects of life building relationships with people who accept you for who you truly are these genuine connections are free from judgment and allow you to Simply exist as your authentic self they're filled with love and love is infinitely more permanent
012than the benefits of Faking your identity I've been blessed to have built many of these relationships throughout High School and I'll be forever thankful to this community for providing me with an opportunity to be my best self as we move into the next stage of our lives whatever that may bring I encourage you all to find Freedom in becoming your best self surround yourself with people who accept and appreciate your strengths and your faults surround yourself with people who pick you up when you fall and lift you up when you reach for your dreams surround yourself with people who you love who love you for who you are because at the end of the day the most beautiful thing that you can be in this world is yourself thank you [Applause] one more round of
013applause for Max nice job [Applause] please welcome to the podium the 2022-2023 class president Jack McDowell I vividly remember the first day of kindergarten as my mom walked me up towards the front of the school I was terrified but also proud of myself for taking the first step towards independence I was excited to try everything I even joined the DaVinci dance team For Better or For Worse I was the only boy in the squad undaunted I showed up for the first day of practice at 6 a.m Sharp two days too early instead of learning the choreo as planned I ended up collating copies with Mrs crane for an hour and a half wearing top hat and tails although my short-lived dance career started off on an embarrassing moment in retrospect the rest of it was
014humiliating as well but the lesson we should all take away is this don't be afraid to try new things but always remember everybody is a camera phone now and the internet is forever so maybe cool it with the hip thrust looking back the journey from kindergarten to graduation day was challenging for us all in different ways but as we stand here today we know that every step we took every hurdle we overcame brought us to this moment back then when I imagined what the world would be like in 2023 I thought flying cars would be commonplace in artificial intelligence could write my graduation speech I was half right as we move on to the next chapter of Our Lives let's take this lesson with us let's remember that even when things seem impossible and when
015the journey ahead seems long or difficult we have the strength resilience and determination to overcome any obstacle let us not be afraid to dream big and set ambitious goals as we have already proved that we can achieve great things just by being here today we might all be a little terrified but we're prepared to take the next step towards independence let's keep that same excitement to try new things as for me I'm pumped for I'm pumped for organic chemistry calculus and dance 115 intro to hip-hop I want to congratulate each and every one of you on this achievement we've worked hard to get here and we should be proud of ourselves let's not rest on our Laurels instead let us take the lessons we have learned The Memories We have made and use them as

017siblings has a different opinion about today a few couldn't care less about me moving forward some are sad to see me go and others are picking out what furniture they want to take to me um whoops sorry my family provides me with constant feedback on everything whether I ask for it and or not this perk although not always uplifting allows me to see the world through many eyes from elementary school insults towards full of wisdom as we embark on this journey forward each one of us will face challenges some of us will go on to achieve our hopes and dreams others will find joy in circumstances they never imagined we are being pushed into a beautiful world overflowing with obstacles and New Beginnings to find joy in our forthcoming realities we must see the world
018through every lens solve problems with the wacky colors lines and shapes from the imagination of a child Finding Bliss and the little things like flowers and cars approach unnerving situations with The Angst of a middle schooler with no fear of being vicious towards those around us love with the grace of an adult appreciating all experiences successes and failures the past four years have shaped us immensely each day we are pushed to become greater versions of ourselves now the progression onwards will force us to visualize the world in unfamiliar ways looking forward is terrifying appealing overwhelming thrilling and wild depending on who you talk to so imagine like a child feel every feeling listen to the wisdom of others and find joy in all that is to come thank you [Applause] another round of applause please
019great job I now have the honor of introducing a person who is extremely invested in the discovery Canyon campus class of 2023 and we are very grateful for all the contributions and support he has extended to the Discovery Canyon Campus Community born and raised in the Academy School District 20 Tom Gregory has a passion for the educational process and thrives on helping others succeed he was a classroom teacher for 11 years a school administrator for four years and completed his 14th year as the leader of business operations at Academy School District 20 in 2019 since 2019. Mr Gregory has been superintendent of schools in Academy District 20. Mr Gregory earned his master's degree in educational leadership and his principal's licensure from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs he earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics
020and his Secondary School teaching license from the University of Southern Colorado Tom I want to thank you for helping us out in what is probably arguably one of the most difficult times to lead in schools and the staff will recognize a couple of these phrases but Tom taught them to me he taught us to Pivot and he taught us and he kept us moving forward in terms of keeping learning moving forward while mitigating the spread of covet 19. so Tom thank you for your leadership please join me in welcoming an enthusiastic supporter of Discovery Canyon campus good friend of mine superintendent Mr Tom J J Thomas Gregory [Applause] well thank you Dr wallstrom and good evening DCC High School congratulations seniors you did it but before I go forward I want to congratulate all the

Braylon Harper and Victoria sablad en and Victoria if you could please stand thank you and Victoria I'm going to ask you to stay standing thank you Victoria and Breitling represented the discovery Canyon Campus High School class of 2023 on my student advisory Council they were the DCC student voice to the district leadership for this past year and represented the student perspective with maturity honesty dignity passion and compassion thank you to both Braylon and Victoria for your time and commitment I appreciate you and know that your feedback and input has made a difference thank you
022[Applause] well today's a big day after 13 years in school you are closing the first biggest chapter in your lives normally I would stand here and say I can only imagine how you must be feeling because let's face it it's been a few years since I graduated from high school however this year graduation ceremonies take on a whole new meaning for me I am graduating with you after 33 years in education I too am graduating not graduating from high school but graduating from a career on June 30th I will officially graduate from a fulfilling career as an educator in Academy School District 20. so this year as I stand stand before you making my final graduation speech I think we may share some of the same feelings over the past weeks I've experienced a host
023of emotions I've been excited I've been anxious I've been eager I've been nervous and I I'll say we have been exhausted and ready to turn off the alarm clock and sweep in maybe you've experienced one or two of these same feelings but when I'm not thinking about how great it will feel to sleep in I find myself doing a lot of reflecting reflecting on the past year and on the past 33 years graduation day is certainly a day of Celebration but I also think it's a natural day of reflection for all of us including imagine your parents and grandparents possibly sitting in the audience when I reflect on the past 33 years working in education I realize in that time I've learned a lot and I've experienced a lot and I've been impacted by thousands
024of people you too in your 13 years of school have learned a lot experienced a lot and been impacted and probably impacted a lot of other people our experiences could fill books while reflecting on all these experience I find myself most thinking or reflecting on the word gratitude and making sure those who have helped me know how thankful I am for their belief in me their trust their support and their encouragement I also find myself thinking about what is most important in our lives throughout my life and career I've been fortunate to be around some very very special people that have helped me in so many ways but often I was so wrapped up in the moment or consumed with how busy I was or thinking about what was coming next I didn't take time
025to acknowledge these impactful people and simply say thank you if I could go back I would say thank you more often specifically I would say thank you to one person that I never thinked her name is Miss Flory Miss Flory was one of my High School Math teachers she not only made math interesting and fun she made me feel confident in my mathematical knowledge and abilities and believe me at that time my mathematical knowledge and abilities were extremely average at best she was passionate about math but delivered her instruction with compassion and care for students she taught me that math was important the math wasn't the most important little did she or I know at the time that I would go on to pursue math as an undergraduate and finish with a degree in mathematics
026so today I say thank you to miss Flory Miss Flory is one person I wish I had thanked years ago I have so many more people to thank for their impact on me but I will spare you you get the idea take time before 40 years pass to show gratitude to the special people in your lives so today I encourage you to encourage you to move forward with gratitude thank all those who support you encourage you and lift you up not only will make them feel great but it will also make you feel great research shows gratitude has several benefits living with gratitude improves your overall health grateful people experience fewer aches and pains and Report feeling healthier grateful people sleep better and feel more rested and maybe most importantly those who spread thanks and
027share gratitude report lower levels of stress higher levels of self-esteem and make and keep friends easier it's hard to argue with these benefits cultivating gratitude or what we might call developing an attitude of gratitude is one of the most overlooked Tools in our toolbox the simple act sometimes of saying thank you is mutually beneficial and will lead you to a happier and more successful life my Reflections in the past week also reminded me to keep the most important things in life at the Forefront and not let the little things dominate time or treasure so I will close with a short story that's adapted from a college classroom that best summarizes this concept so imagine this a teacher standing in front of her classroom a bunch of things in front of her she silently picks up
028a very large empty mayonnaise jar and proceeds to fill it with golf balls she then asked the students in the classroom if the jar was full they agreed that it was the teacher then picked up a box of small Pebbles and poured them into the same jar she shook the jar lightly the Pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls she then asked the students again if the jar was full students agreed that it was the teacher next pick up a box of sand and poured the sand into the jar gave it a gentle Shake the sand filled up the remaining voids she asked once more if the jar was full students once again responded this time with a little more Vigor and frustration yes the jar is full now said the teacher
029I want you to imagine that this jar represents your life the golf balls are the most important things your family your faith your health your friends your passions and if everything else was lost and only the golf balls remained your life would still be full the Pebbles are the other things that matter like School your home your job or your career and the sand is everything else the very small stuff now think about what would happen if you filled the jar with sand first there would be no room for the Pebbles or the golf balls the same goes for life if you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are most important pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness
030spend time with your siblings your parents your faith visit with friends take your grandparents out to dinner play another 18. thank a special person for being special there will always be time for the small stuff take care of the golf balls first the things that really matter the things you will always be grateful for set your priorities because the rest is just sand congratulations graduates I thank you for allowing me to share in your celebration go forth and make your mark on this world keep what is most important to priority and live life with an attitude of gratitude be well and be safe thank you very much [Applause] thank you Mr Gregory congratulations class of 2023 you made it your accomplishments and academics activities leaderships the Arts and Athletics are too numerous to count on

032greatness in your relationships with others be it personal or professional remember to focus on others strengths to build them up and Inspire greatness in them ultimately remember the famous question from Dr Donald Clifton a Pioneer in the field of positive psychology and creator of the strength finder inventory which most of you took during the past few years Dr Clifton asked a question worth pondering and applying to your life he asked what will happen when we think about what is right with people rather than fixating on what is wrong with them second and some of you have already heard this from me before country music star Tim McGraw performed a great song called humble and kind the lyrics provide great guidance on the importance of being humble and kind as part of being successful in life

043one of us have connected to this school and community in a unique and impactful way and yet today we must say goodbye today as we turn the tassels on our caps we turn the final page of the novel of our time at this school after 12 years we will Begin Again and although our Journeys may look different from here on out we will always share this time at this school Marcus Aurelius said the quality of your thoughts determines the quality of your life wherever you may go whatever trials you may face or hardships you encounter happiness and Beauty are found not in accomplishment but in mindset life can be beautiful but only if you invite the beauty today that may seem easy after all you're surrounded by family and friends beauty is easy to realize
044however some days it may be more difficult to see through the clouds of loss and uncertainty I am sad to say to say that as we look back today I have regrets on not appreciating the beauty of how that high school has offered I regret not fully appreciating the beauty of the Great Moments lunches with your friends prom and late night talks but I will also regret not appreciating the beauty in less desirable moments I will miss the miserable assignments teenage heartbreaks and maybe maybe one day I'll miss the subtle beauty of Miss o'hare's stats class of 2023 I urge you now and forever to keep looking keep looking beauty is everywhere realize it today we move our tassel from right to left acknowledging that while we will always be a part of DCC our
