and staff last year as I drove home from the rampart graduation I knowing I would need to come up with some final words to provide to the class of 2023 I couldn't shake one story that has impacted my life greatly I want to talk to you about a man I know who taught me to be brave and follow my heart and passions regardless of the opinions his name is Barry Barry was raised in New Jersey his mom was a four foot 11 school teacher at an all boys school that Barry attended very often found himself in some trouble at school and became accustomed to hearing The Stomping of his mother's shoes down the hallway and a walk together to the office she was serious and loving and pushed Barry to engage in school and be

respectful she challenged him to believe in himself as a student Barry grew up to be an educator and a Collegiate swim and dive coach before later going into Finance when Barry started a family he wanted his children to have even more opportunities he challenged his children as his mother challenged him when his daughter wanted to be become an educator there was a feeling in him that wanted more for her the determination of what that more could be is undetermined but it could have been a mix of make more money and him knowing just how hard work a teacher is and that as he watched his mother serve their Community for years she majored in mathematics which she saw which he saw as an opportunity to explain all the other careers she could go into he

was relentless in his pursuit of convincing her to become an accountant an actuary or a variety of other professions article clippings would often show up on his daughter's dresser of the salaries work descriptions and education needed to go into these other professions stories of family friends who had just taken two more classes and become an accountant were shared at the dinner table the opinions were constant yet through it all the answer was a math teacher then one Thursday night after the math degree was completed and she had accepted a teaching position she called her dad Barry on the other end of the phone Barry cried big happy tears and said that is incredible I am so proud of you at that moment his daughter realized all he ever wanted for her was to know her

options and find her way Barry is my dad I've learned a great deal from Barry I have learned a great deal from Barry but the most important thing I realized in that moment is to be brave enough to be me and make an impact on the world and that is enough today you have people filling this Arena who are proud of you and what you have accomplished they will continue to be here and be proud of you as you go in the direction that inspires you As you move on to what is next there will be a lot of opinions continue the to this in the pursuit of your dreams bravely so Rampart class of 2023 be brave brave enough to take risks brave enough to be kind brave enough to do what is right

brave enough to do what is hard and brave enough to be you always congratulations class of 2023. it is now my pleasure to introduce this year's student speaker at large Eli Boston Eli is joined tonight by his mother and father Alexia and Steve Bastian brother Luke Bastian and family friend Tristan green thank you I was walking through the grocery store searching for something anything that could bring to the French food party that happened to be next class I checked my phone to see the time 11 35 the end of lunch and 10 minutes before the start of blue 3. I rushed through the grocery store's aisles grabbed a bag of the most french-looking pretzels I could find and headed for the checkout line when it's finally my turn I handed the cashier an elderly woman

with curly gray hair and a pleasant smile my bag of pretzels as she inquired about my plans after high school her eyes beamed with life as if my response was the most important thing in the world her smile lifted my spirits until she asked and how do you plan on being successful taken aback by her question I chuckled slightly so that I wasn't that I was still trying to figure that out and then paid for the pretzels and ran out of the store her words began to haunt me what does success look like and what does it mean to actually be successful as I rushed to French class I found myself examining the lives of those around me wondering are they successful are they how about them I finally worked up the courage to open

the door and enter the classroom and face the inevitable stairs of my peers I repeatedly apologize for my tardiness and raced to the protection of my seat it was then that I reflected on my shortcomings and inability to meet the perfect expectations that I had placed on myself the voices in my head took the spotlight and their Echo paralyzed me I began doubting every decision that I made and compared my life with those around me and although I was staring at the same Eiffel Tower lined walls I found myself in a completely different world my entire Rampart career flashed before my eyes every time I showed a blade to class missed a question on an exam forgot a responsibility or made a joke that people did not find funny it guaranteed that I was destined

to remain forever stagnated in the quicksand of mediocrity success is so often defined by wealth accomplishments Fame and the ability to appear perfect but as long as we try to convince the rest of the world that we are successful the manipulative voice in our head will remain our compass that guides our every thought action and desire and so how do we regain control over our minds and surrender our addiction to comparison and how do we redefine the meaning of success as I left school that afternoon and returned home I found my answer there were two young girls drawing with chuck on the sidewalk along with their blue and yellow outfits they both sported the brightest most infectious Smiles as they concentrated on their shared artistic masterpiece together they transform the otherwise mundane sidewalk into remarkable

canvas upon which they drew a rainbow a heart and a radiant sun with the word smile underneath it struck me seemingly out of nowhere but success looks like a smile like eyes that see the world with empathy and love like a courageous rainbow that stares guard after a terrifying storm it sounds like a thank you like a shared story from which nobody can escape an inevitable embarrassment it sounds like a laugh that inspires a community and it feels like the tickle of the early morning Breeze like a shoulder to cry on and like a warm embrace class of 2023 when you stare at the sidewalk what do you see the ordinary and the mundane for a canvas and an opportunity to create something truly special and when you pick up that piece of chalk what

do you choose to draw what makes you happy what do you love when you reflect on your life on your experiences and on your memories will the sidewalk be painted or will it remain a blank surface simply waiting to be colored by an artist with the courage to follow their heart success lies within each and every one of us all we have to do is pick up the chalk your friend Eli thank you at this time it is my honor to introduce the rampart choir under the redirection of Miss Ellie Hackbarth who will perform Looking Out My Window [Music] [Applause] thank you [Music] [Applause] foreign [Applause] [Music] I don't know [Applause] it is my pleasure to introduce Mr Tom Gregory superintendent of Academy School District 20. born and raised in Academy District 20 Mr Tom

Gregory has a passion for the educational process and thrives on helping others succeed fulfilling 32 years in Academy School District 20 Mr Gregory joined the District staff in 1991 as a middle school math teacher shortly after he transferred to none other than Rampart High School where he served for 11 years as a math teacher math department co-chair football coach softball coach baseball coach and as the assistant principal and athletic director for four of those 11 years following his time at Rampart Mr Gregory served as the leader for business operations became our Chief Financial Officer Deputy superintendent Chief Financial Officer and finally as superintendent where he has led Academy School District 20 to earn the ex accredited with distinction designation from the Colorado Department of Education for the 14th consecutive year we would like to thank

Mr Gregory for all that he has done for Rampart High School students and all of the district please welcome superintendent of Academy School District 20 Mr Gregory well thank you Ali and good evening Rampart High School and congratulations to the class of 2023 you made it and teach family member here with us today congratulations to you also because you made it too I'd like to take a moment to recognize a special student from the rampart class of 2023 Sam Martinez Sam if you could please stand [Music] I want to recognize Sam because Sam represented the Rampart High School class of 2023 on my student advisory Council he was the Rampart High School senior voice to to the district and provided student perspective with maturity honesty dignity passion and compassion thank you Sam for your time

and commitment I appreciate you and know that and please know that your feedback and input makes a difference thank you Sam today is a big day after 13 years in school you are closing the first biggest chapter in your lives normally I would stand here and say I can only imagine how much you how you must be feeling because let's face it it's been a few years since I graduated from high school however this year graduation ceremonies take on a whole new meaning for me because I am graduating with you after 33 years in education I too am graduating I'm graduating from a career and on June 30th I will officially apparently with Mr messes and Miss pavlica be retiring from a fulfilling career in Academy District 20. so this year as I stand before

you making my final graduation speech I think we may share some of the same feelings over the past weeks I've experienced a host of emotions I've been excited anxious eager nervous and exhausted and ready to turn off the alarm clock and sleep in maybe you have experienced some of these same feelings but when I'm not thinking about how great it will feel to sleep in I find myself reflecting reflecting on the past year and on the past 33 years graduation day is certainly a day of Celebration but I think it's also a natural day to reflect for us all including those of us or those of you in the audience today when I reflect on the past 33 years of working in education I realized in that time I've learned a lot and I've experienced

a lot and I and I've been impacted by thousands of people you too in your 13 years of school have learned a lot and experienced a lot and been impacted and impacted many people our experiences could fill a book while reflecting on all those experience I find myself most thinking about gratitude and making sure those who have helped me know how thankful I am for their belief in me their trust their support and their encouragement I also find myself thinking about what is most important in our lives throughout my life and career I've been fortunate to be around some very special people they have helped me in so many ways but I was often so wrapped up in a moment or consumed with how busy I was or thinking about what was coming next I

didn't take the time to acknowledge the impactful people and simply say thank you if I could go back I would say thank you to more people more often specifically one example I would say thank you to somebody named Miss Flory Miss Flory was one of my High School Math teachers she not only made math interesting and fun she made me feel confident in my mathematical knowledge and abilities which believed me at the time were very average she was passionate about math but delivered her instruction with compassion and care for students she taught me that math was important but it was not the most important thing little did she know or at the time little did I know that I would go on excuse me to pursue math as an undergraduate and finish with a degree

in mathematics so today looking back and far too late I say thank you to miss Flory Miss Flory is one person I wish I had thanked years ago I have so many more people to thank for their impact on me but I will spare you all that time you get the idea take time before 40 years pass to show your gratitude to the special people in your lives so today I encourage you to move forward with gratitude thank all those who support you encourage you and lift you up not only will make you make you feel great it will also make them feel great in fact research shows gratitude has many benefits living with gratitude improves your overall health grateful people experience fewer aches and pains and Report feeling healthier than others grateful people sleep

better and feel more rested and maybe most importantly those who spread thanks and share gratitude report lower levels of stress higher levels of self-esteem and make and keep friends easier it is hard to argue with these benefits cultivating gratitude or what we might call developing an attitude of gratitude is one of the most overlooked Tools in our toolboxes the simple Act of saying thank you is mutually beneficial and will lead you to a happier and more successful life in the future my Reflections in the past week also remind me to keep the most important things in life at the Forefront and not let the little things dominate your time or treasure I will close with a short story adapted from a college classroom that best summarizes this concept a teacher stood before her class and

had some items in front of her she silently picked up a very large empty jar of mayonnaise and proceeded to fill it with golf balls she then asked the students if the jar was full they agreed that it was the teacher then picked up a ball of small a box of small Pebbles and poured them into the same jar she shook the jar lightly the Pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls and she then asked the students again if the jar was full again they agreed that it was the teacher next picked up a box of sand and poured the sand into the jar gave the jar a little Shake the sand filled up the remaining voids in the jar she asked once Mars The Jar full the students a little bit

more frustrated this time responded with an unanimous yes the jar is full now said the teacher I want you to imagine that this jar represents your life the golf balls represent the most important things your family your health your faith your friends your passions and if everything else was lost and only the golf balls remained your life would still be full the Pebbles are the other things that matter like School your home your job your career the sand is everything else the very small stuff now think about what would happen if you filled the jar with sand first there would be no room for the Pebbles or the golf balls the same goes for life if you spend all of your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the

things that are most important pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness spend time with your siblings your parents visit with friends take your grandparents out to dinner play another 18. thank a special person for being special there will always be time for the small stuff take care of the golf balls first the things that really matter the things you will always be grateful for such your priorities because the rest is just sand congratulations graduates I thank you for allowing me to share in your celebration go forth and make your mark on this world keep what is most important a priority and live life with an attitude of gratitude thank you and congratulations to you all thank you Mr Gregory good evening class of 2023 friends family and colleagues it is my

me more than I could ever possibly articulate and for that I'm eternally grateful so our families thank you and finally ourselves because we would not be here without four years of tenacity and dedication put in and out of school so for that Pat yourselves on the back that all right now for the meat and potatoes um in April of 2021 one of the most significant moments of my life happened Trevor Lawrence was drafted into the NFL number one overall by the Jags as a personal hero to me he exemplifies many characteristics that I aspire to emulate in my own life and I think that they are some that we can take forward with us as we move on as well um as he started his rookie season he was in one of the worst systems

the league has ever seen and as much as it could be blamed on the system he also struggled himself with one of the highest interception rates and the worst record in the league but one thing he didn't do was lose his confidence he kept doing his job he kept inspiring his teammates and a year later he came back won the division and won a playoff game and what we can remember from this is regardless of the circumstances regardless of where we are right now to remember your value because you're so much more than what you see right in front of you and that's something I think we should take take with us as we move on so as we start our our new chapter of Our Lives we have to remember that no matter what

we do whether it's becoming a doctor a lawyer an engineer a scientist an artist to to strive to be the best at what you do and so do that all right um I'd like to end with a quote from one of the greatest to ever play the game of basketball after winning game two of the 2009 NBA Finals Kobe Bryant is quoted as saying in regards to the expression on his face job's not finished as as hard as we've worked and as important as this moment is right now we are not done this is not the peak and the the potential of the individuals in this room is infinite and I cannot wait to see what we all will do um I'm really going to miss you guys thank you and congratulations foreign good evening

Rampart it's May 16th I know you've all had to stay marked in your calendars for months now because I certainly have today's the day we step out into the big wide unknown world no longer as kids but as individuals but before that I'd like to ask all you a question how many of you would believe me if I told you I once failed a math test hmm here's a brief story on Tuesday February 8 2022 I bombed the American Invitational math exam with a whopping 2 out of 15. do the math that's at 13 percent for those of you who don't really know me I'm quite passionate about math and I never flunked a math test before well I'm that badly that 13 felt like a slap in the face from the math Gods telling

me Ari you should never do math again and you know for a few days I just felt defeated it took me a while to get back up on my feet and realize that I had I had two choices I could either give up and throw everything away and just end in failure or I could just move on now I thought not just about what I'd accomplished before but more importantly what I could accomplish in the future and that day I realized that life is like a piano performance you're likely going to play wrong notes but the best thing you do is keep playing and not think too much about them in my experience if you give your performance everything you've got and everything you prepared for nobody notices a few minor mistakes but what you

don't want to do is emphasize that mistake or even worse stop playing and that day I realized that 13 is just a brief dissonance and long snotted as my life now to the 2023 Rampart graduate graduating class congratulations to all of you I'm sure all of us have made countless memories that will cherish for the rest of our lives while today marks the end of our high school journey and marks the beginning of so much more whether you're going to college work or whatever I want to remind all of you that it's okay to play wrong notes regardless of the path you choose life is a long and oftentimes challenging composition so don't focus on the minor mistakes you might make on the way because everyone makes mistakes instead a focus on making music thank

you all right now Mr Lavalley it is with the greatest honor that I present to you the members of the class of 2023.
