and jacob walker [Applause] friends family staff and graduates it is an honor to celebrate with you all at the class of 2022's commencement ceremony this day has been a long time coming parents i bet you are wondering where all the time went so are we from the start of kindergarten it has been 4 658 days until now 658 days of growth connection struggle and hope although during our school years it may have felt like it took forever to get through looking back on those days makes it seem like time passed by too quickly especially senior year the last few months of senior year are hectic nobody wants to think about the lasts our last football game exam assembly mosh pit or essay our last spirit week and the hardest our last bell at 2 45
and our last time walking out of those doors emotions fly high and we want to hang on to every second it doesn't really hit you then in just a few weeks seeing each other will potentially need a road trip we want to cherish the memories with the people that we have been with for years although we have been anticipating this day for many months we are scared for this journey to end this closes an era for us in our jetpack joyride and musically an air of silly bands and fidget spinners an are of cheesy breadsticks and otter pops in our high school career alone we went through covid windstorms breaking windows in the school and political divide yet we also were number one for baltimore bucks in the nation every single year [Applause] we won
multiple state and national championships we continued to have world-class academics we got closer we rose above we may be sad about the end of this age but we have so much more to look forward to after walking one giant road we are going off on 351 unique paths however this is not the end this is just where we get to choose our own way class of 2022 create your own paths be authentically you don't take things for granted make your mark live each day like it's your last congratulations [Applause] first off i want to thank all of our teachers and administrators for making this event possible i also want to thank every single family member here today who supported us through this 12-year journey without every single one of you we wouldn't be here today
celebrating our achievements together as grace said i know this feels like the end of an era and it is but that doesn't mean we lose connection with these people who we have spent so much of our lives with after this we will all be heading our own separate ways some going to colleges in and out of state some to trade schools and some simply forging their own paths in life we'll all be out in the world in our own communities but that doesn't mean that we still won't be connected we've been thrown into a world full of technology that allows us some amazing opportunities now i know i know technology has led to challenges and opportunities but the opportunities we have been presented with are astounding we have the ability to talk to somebody halfway
across the globe so no matter where you go what you do reach out talk to your fellow rams we are and always will be ramps now i can't really address how much our class has grown and changed without addressing the elephant in the room spongebob being in the 2019 halftime show in all seriousness though the kova 19 pandemic has been a huge part of our high school careers as nearly a ninth of our entire life has been spent living through a historic event to but to quote that insanely cliche quote when the going get tough the tough get going well the going got tough heck the going still is tough and we're still going we are moving forward in the world we are the tough we have experienced something that no other class has experienced
we successfully navigated high school a building full of stress and acne while also navigating through unprecedented times as the media likes to say not only did we navigate through a pandemic but we started the road in rebuilding we seniors have been able to give bring our school back and give it a sense of normalcy we were able to rebuild events for years to come all the while crafting and changing those events to be as positive and inclusive as possible sure there may never be the same normal as we once knew but we created a new level of excellency and i for one like it a whole lot better now i want to end this speech off with a quote that got me through a lot of high school life is short future doesn't come with
any guarantees you want something in life you gotta go for it every single one of you here today graduates parents siblings that one aunt that you only see at family gatherings you know the one pinches your cheek and calls you cute you know how true this is class of 2022 what we have persevered through what we have triumphed through is truly remarkable we wanted something in life and we went for it and i know that we are going to go for it every single day because that is who we are we are the tough we are the perseverant we are ramstrong and we are ramparts class of 2022. [Applause] once again everyone to the softball field i'm kidding i'm kidding back to mr alvarez jacob's fired up tonight for sure welcome to the 40th annual
commencement exercise of rampart high school please let me begin by thanking the air force academy for providing us access to this wonderful facility [Applause] i'm not sure if i missed the football field yet or not it's a little hot in here tonight but uh this is an awesome facility and it's good to be back i also please let me extend a great dep a gratitude uh to those who have bravely served and who are currently serving in all branches of our military especially those parents tonight who are currently deployed if you could please ask our staff members who have served in any branch of the military and any of our guests here tonight to please stand and be recognized [Applause] thank you members of our audience and members of our staff and board for your
service to our country now it is my honor to introduce the distinguished group who joined me on stage tonight mr thomas levalley president of the board of education [Applause] aaron salt director of the board of education former rampart parent and vice president of the board of education mr will tembe [Applause] future rampart parent this is heather cloninger treasurer of the board of education [Applause] and current and future rampart parent this is nicole khan's board of education director [Applause] board members pick well mr tom gregory superintendent of academy school district 20. my guide through my job and someone who i owe a great debt of debt gratitude to is dr jim smith the super assistant tenant [Applause] four people who keep me on the straight and narrow and moving forward with our vision as a school
is the rampart administrative team mr kyle chamberlain assistant principal [Applause] mr andy parks assistant principal and director of athletics [Applause] current assistant principal and future principal of rampart high school mrs megan sanders [Applause] and mrs michelle tucker assistant principal [Applause] mrs tucker is also our planner and organizer of this graduation so definitely a great big thank you to her for putting this on [Applause] before i begin tonight i would just like to say that it's been one of the pleasures of my life to be a part of this community and to have been principal of this high school the best high school in the state of colorado for the past 12 years [Applause] rampart high school held its first commencement ceremony in may of 1983. it was the new shining high school in a newly
built neighborhood with the best view in town the 249 students of that first graduating class and the staff members who opened rampart left a legacy of positive action community building school spirit and academic excellence is a legacy that we have built upon improved and we have saved it for generations to come and we still have that view i am grateful to this class for resurrecting the spirit of rampart in a time of variability variability and uncertainty communities who navigate troubled waters have a vision for the future that will benefit generations of leaders who do their part in sharing what it means to be good and true demonstrating what is essential for success and modeling how to coexist with differing beliefs and viewpoints for that i am eternally grateful to this class and this community this
year every day i am reminded of the impact our experiences bring to this community the other day i was doing yard work with steve getting ready to put my house on the market when we finished i filled up a full of cold water for him looked into his warm brown eyes and asked him if he was ready for the adventure of a lifetime he did not offer me a verbal response he just wagged his tail letting me know that everything was going to work out the wind had died down and it had warmed enough to grab myself an ice cold beverage and join him on the back deck closing my eyes i could feel the sun warm and soothing on my face and i pondered in the background i could hear nina simone saying little
darling it's been a long cold lonely winter little darling it feels like years since we've been here here comes the sun little darling here comes the sun and i say it's all right soulful and sorrowful yet somehow consoling and hopeful with each lyric as that glass began to bead with condensed water i began to think about time and the concept of a journey in many ways we are all modern day illiciuses heroes on a constant quest to find home and purpose overcoming and meeting challenges that stand as barriers to our individual and collective greatness in life rampart's been my home in central my purpose my journey for these past 12 years but tomorrow just like all of you wearing our blue gowns that changes an 8250 lexington drive will not be my constant anymore and
i must start my next journey i can acknowledge that there's a certain amount of excitement but there's also tinges of apprehensions that i've been experiencing however just like a freshman on the first day of school there is a nervous excitement about what lay ahead an unbound person ready to chart a new course and experience new adventures there's going to be uncertainty it's inevitable for all of us which decisions to make and what roads to go down become complex matters when this happens let us listen to our heads yet more importantly let's listen to our hearts the truth is present if we are open and willing to accept it just remember as bob dylan said you don't need a weather man to know which way the wind blows as we get out there in this new
reality may your hands always be busy may your feet always be swift may you have a strong foundation when the wind changes shift bob dylan said that too just like the last two years taught us to be ready for anything at any time stay youthful resilient and creative fill your cup at the nourishing fountains and with nurturing people it's important to be purposeful in what we do now more than ever we need to do good work it's paramount remember that we need not get to decide everything that happens in our lives some things are beyond our control and perhaps are a matter of fate beyond our understanding we live all too often in a world that's consumed by things that are made and contrived by human hands forgetting all too often that while everyday life
may provide us with google maps to find the nearest dutch bro or chick-fil-a it does not provide us with a direct design for our final destination or our true purpose when faced with these situations gain as much wisdom as possible to re-emerge stronger and more prepared for the next experience be leaders on your journey now more than ever the world needs your generation to lead us into the future with renewed dignity and grace find sustainable solutions to the big problems and abandon the petty things that hold us back consider what lay in the balance and know that if you chase the most significant contests you win every single day a life of service leadership is one well-lived and rewarding be the next malala greta parma emma zuriel jazz sophie kelvin marvin nicholas jalen or desmond
all young people who have changed the world before turning the age of 20. don't wait your turn make your turn now finally just love and find the love that thrives without criticality having and giving support like holding someone's hand along the way will make your journey memorable and less scary you might get your heart broken a few times but that's all part of the deal the rewards of finding what you love are immeasurable and who you love is immeasurable for the past 30 years i've had the pleasure and blessing of exploring this life with mrs alvarez she is my partner in every journey i have dared to undertake she puts up with all my antics and does not care that i refer to a short husky black lab as my angel i love her and
i cherish her every minute her she grounds me in the fact that the only thing in life worth hating is hate itself and with all else we can find common ground and nothing can change that now is the sun positioned on the horizon mrs alvarez came onto the back deck and she put her hand on my shoulder and i heard nina simone sing little darling here comes the sun oh baby it's all right now you can come out now it's all right thank you rampart and i will not forget a single minute of this memorable journey i've been on with you nothing but love in my heart for you thank you [Applause] i now give you paige walzman this year's student speaker at large paige is joined tonight by her parents elise and david walzman
her sisters mandy and jill and her grandparents jill and mark ringer paige will be attending brigham young university to major in communications paige wilson you guys i can't believe we're graduating today it seems like just last week we were all babies remember we cried spit up every other day and needed a snack every five minutes let's be frank here that was last week unfortunately within the next three months we're expected to make the transition from elmo's world to the real world i know every one of you is going to be successful but that's relative let's talk about the universal measure of success let's talk about how we're all going to be happy for the rest of our lives first up gratitude studies show that gratitude increases happiness people who journal about their blessings every day
show more signs of overall well-being they have more optimism they are happier life is unpredictable inevitably something will happen to each of us that will be unplanned unexpected and unappreciated when we have gratitude we can recognize blessings through the good times and the bad follow your dreams people but be grateful when your dreams don't turn out exactly the way you thought they would next up laugh at yourself research online told me that personal anecdotes preferably about embarrassing things that happen to you in high school are necessary for a successful graduation speech i failed my first driver's test because i started driving on the wrong side of the road i won't justify it it seems impossible to pull off and it pretty much is i cried a lot but my driver's test taught me that i
am best off laughing at myself if i can find humor in bad situations they become funny situations of course there is a time to be sad and not every situation is humorous but when we face unexpected circumstances we have two options we can remember forever with shame or we can laugh at our own ridiculousness and move forward keeping an eye out for the next humorous adventure laughing at ourselves keeps us moving forward especially in the face of failure it helps us find something to be happy about the last step to happiness is this one person's success is not your failure this seems obvious but sometimes it's hard to wrap our minds around astonishingly it's easy to make the precarious jump from they did something good to they must be better than me instead of resenting
people's accomplishments we can be genuinely happy for them happiness involves being happy for others it's comforting that we're not bad just because someone else is good we can all be good together as a reformed baby myself i'm telling you that happiness matters my appreciation for life is growing just like i am and i hope yours is yours will too i wish you all the best of success but ultimately i hope you'll be happy thanks everyone if you're happy and you know it clap your hands at this time it is my honor to introduce the rampart choir under the direction of miss ellie hackberg who will be performing fare thee well love uh [Music] so [Music] um [Music] just [Music] [Applause] [Music] then [Music] away [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] my [Music] my god [Music] is [Music]
my [Music] [Applause] team [Music] today [Music] wow foreign [Music] [Applause] thank you choir that was beautiful now it is my pleasure to introduce mr tom gregory superintendent of academy school district 20. born and raised in academy district 20 mr gregory has a passion for the educational process and thrives on helping others succeed he was a classroom teacher for 11 years a school administrator for four years and he completed his 14th year as the leader for business operations at academy district 20 in 2019 mr tom gregory began his duties as superintendent of the academy school district in july of 2019. he graduated from the university of southern colorado where he earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics and earned his master's degree from uccs mr gregory started his public education career at corpus christi for one year

you maria today as we gather with family and friends to recognize and celebrate you i would like to tell you about my uncle mike as i read through this you might think of somebody in your life that resembles uncle mike it has been nearly 40 years since i was sitting in your seat and nearly that long since him and i had a casual conversation yet his words of wisdom stick with me today in fact i believe his words have shaped my life but before i share his wisdom it is important first to know a little bit about my uncle mike my father was the youngest of five siblings his oldest sister was 15 years older than he was my uncle mike married my dad's oldest sister and my uncle mike was 12 years older than
my dad's eldest sister why do i say that because my uncle mike born in 1912 felt more like a grandfather than he did an uncle purely by age uncle mike lived through the great depression and experienced the same poverty and hardship so many others faced during that time this experience left him a no-nonsense no frills hard-working brutally honest but sometimes gentle man his nickname was froggy i never learned exactly where the nickname originated but it stuck with him his entire life he grew his own fruits and vegetables in a garden that occupied most of his one-acre property in canyon city colorado when he visited his home you knew to follow his rules if you didn't he had a special voice that demanded conformity it was gruff it was direct and it was short on words
he had an innate ability to be intimidating he loved to fish and he loved to hunt not necessarily for the sport but out of necessity for food he had a non-negotiable rule when fishing you had to eat whatever you caught there was no such thing as waste if you caught four fish you'd better be prepared to eat four fish i learned to be very aware of how many fish i was catching and may have secretly released a few back to the water out of fear but also out of respect as a result of living through the great depression my uncle mike had no trust in the banking system he was reluctant to deposit money did not use credit and refused any sort of debt he operated solely in cash if he wanted to invest he
bought gold and hid it throughout his house and throughout his property uncle mike was never one to like having a boss he was not a personality to accept oversight or being told what to do as a result he and my aunt opened drive-in restaurants in canyon city named froggy's poor boy the drive-in was very successful in canyon city and after a few years they opened froggy's poor boy drive-ins throughout the west including froggy's restaurants in walesburg just out of curiosity raise your hand if you've ever heard of wallsenberg colorado all right he opened restaurants in walesburg durango cortez and even moab utah he operated these he and my aunt operated these drive-ins until he retired in 1963. he worked extremely hard to build his business scattered over five cities in two states customers drove miles
to have a froggies hamburger and a beer for 15 cents he did hamburgers better than any other competitor in the day so flash forward one summer when i was home from college early in college after my first or second year my mother and i went to visit my aunts and my uncle mike as i was sitting with my uncle in the small living room in the house he built we began discussing his life experiences and my future when with my uncle mike i felt tremendous pressure to answer his questions in such a way that he could and would be proud of me and maybe i might even oppress him i wanted to tell him that i was going down the right path excuse me i wanted him to tell me i was going down the
right path making the right decisions and that i was going to be successful he asked me what colle what my college course of study was i proudly and confidently told him i was either going to major in mechanical engineering or mathematics i felt pretty good about my answer i felt my course of study would impress him and he would express his admiration or at least some approval however his response was not what i expected he offered neither admiration nor approval instead he said young man that's all fine but that's not what's important and it's not what's going to be important let me tell you something he said in his stern non-apologetic way it doesn't matter what course of study you choose or even if you finish your course of study what is most important is
whatever you choose to do in life you do it better than anyone else does it it doesn't matter if you go into medicine construction law trash collection or the restaurant business whatever it is you must do it better than anyone else does it you can be a ditch digger he said if you dig ditches better than anyone else digs ditches you will be successful this was not what i expected to hear from him but to this day it stands as the most accurate the most important and most impactful piece of advice i've ever received i've tried to live my life as he advised i've seen in his wisdom play out over and over again in the lives of friends relatives co-workers and colleagues uncle mike passed in 2003 the age of 90 but our conversation
that day years ago and the wisdom he shared has lived with me ever since i've shared his advice with my children and if you ask them probably i shared it one or two two times too many times today i share with you two degrees a life a life of learning and 32 career years later and still the most important and impactful learning of my life i received sitting on the plastic covered sofa in my uncle from my uncle mike in his living room so my advice to you today as you leave high school and enter college trade school the military the workforce or whatever comes your way comes from my uncle mike success is not determined by what you do it's determined by how well you do it whatever it is you choose to do
do it better than anyone else and success will follow these words were true at the turn of the 19th century they were true at the turn of the 20th century and they will still be true for the 21st century congratulations rampart high school class of 2022 i wish you all a hopeful fulfilling and successful future be well and be safe [Applause] thank you mr gregory good evening class of 2022 friends family and colleagues it is my distinct privilege to now draw your attention to the academic achievements and other distinctions of our graduates the board of education and the district administration would like to recognize those students whose parent or parents are currently deployed in service to our nation these students are wearing a red white and blue cord with those students please stand [Applause] students

all like to move on then i thought about talking about the future but i don't know how to do that even though i'm standing here before you i've been on this earth the same amount of years as everyone else in this graduating class i have no clue what is in store for us and i have no clue what our lives will look like moving forward i may be valedictorian but that has absolutely nothing to do with my level of wisdom i think it'll be interesting to see how significant we find these four years when we're in our 30s and 40s and so on but even the significance of our high school experience will be different for each of us as we look back on these years its impact will depend on how much we value
the lessons we learned i'm sure that with covid our high school years may lend themselves to more lessons of perseverance and resilience nevertheless the value we take out of this high school experience will be determined by the challenges we face in the future after all we are all on our own paths that convene briefly for four years and after graduation we will all disperse and continue on on our own separate journeys thus only with time will it be apparent to us how important our high school experience was so that left me even more uncertain as to what i should talk about at today's graduation ceremony however it finally left me at the conclusion that perhaps the best the simplest answer is the best today i am here to say it's graduation and i am so
relieved it's here after a high school experience that felt like both two and ten years at the same time it's weird to think that this is it today is the last day that we will all be in the same place at the same time no more setting the alarm for early in the morning and hitting the snooze button a few too many times no more rushing out the door just driving the route that i now know by heart just to get to the rampart before the 745 bell no more seeing our favorite coaches and teachers in administration that love have loved us and encouraged us and taught us and helped guide us these past four years and we'll continue to do so even after we disperse it seems like such a foreign concept to fathom
and even now i feel like the idea hasn't fully sunk in yet i mean it is four years out of the 18 we've been on this earth which is almost a quarter of our lifetime right there but needless to say the only takeaway i can be sure of right now is that we should be proud whether you believe our graduating class had a better or worse experience than any other classes the fact that we have all made it to this moment in our lives is a reason enough to be proud whatever trials and tribulations each of us have faced we made it to this milestone so with all that to say congratulations class of 2022 go rams [Applause] good afternoon teachers faculty parents family and friends and most importantly fellow graduates congratulations class of 2022
we made it i'm sure we have all had times when we doubted that we would we made it through lots of homework projects and exams all while also doing music sports and other activities obviously education is important but as we move toward our future endeavors i think that persevering through these challenges and emerging happy is the most important thing to focus on we will all face obstacles which is an essential thing for progress because it helps us learn from our mistakes however we all have the strength to make it through these times and learn to find happiness our years at rampart have been very eventful from school events such as bald for bucks and dances to more weird things such as questionable tick tock challenges these past four years of high school have also included
so many historic events such as social movements and of course the pandemic this speech would be incomplete without mentioning the two years of our lives where we were unable to meet with friends or family or travel students and teachers faced unique challenges of trying to navigate online classrooms even with these unfortunate circumstances we found ways to be happy we video called our friends every night watched so many bad movies through netflix parties and saw people's pets crash our online courses we never expected to find happiness this way but we showed that we could persevere through the challenges honestly this speech was probably one of the most difficult parts of my high school i spent a long time googling best graduation speeches and when i read examples of these speeches they all included statements about the
importance of hard work and how it leads to success this is all very important but i think that we should also take care of ourselves and be happy doing whatever we choose to do nobel laureate albert schweitzer said success is not the key to happiness happiness is the key to success if you love what you are doing you will be successful in the future i hope that we can all endure any obstacles we may face and achieve our own happiness thank you to all our teachers and staff and parents for your guidance and support good luck everyone for the future and congratulations [Applause] now miss cons it is with pleasure and pride that i present you the members of the class of i hereby certify that these students have met the requirements for graduation from
