for you to perform so thank you great job as they go ahead and pull their keyboard off stage it is my pleasure to introduce mr tom gregory superintendent of academy school district 20. mr gregory joined the academy district 20 staff in 1991 as a middle school math teacher at challenger middle school shortly after he transferred to rampart high school where he served for 11 years as a math teacher math department co-chair football coach softball coach baseball coach and finally as the rampart high school assistant principal and athletic director for four of those 11 years in 2009 mr gregory became our chief financial officer and served in that capacity until 2016 when he added the duties of deputy superintendent along with being the cfo in 2019 same year i became principal mr gregory was named the

superintendent of academy school district 20. mr gregory earned his master's degree in educational leadership and his principal licensure from the university of colorado in colorado springs he earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics and his secondary school teacher licensure from the university of southern colorado if you would please welcome mr gregory thank you miss koldenhoven and congratulations aspen valley high school class of 2022 i hope you take this very special moment in celebration of your accomplishment capture the sights sounds emotions support and pride you're feeling today and use that to propel you forward i would also like to take a moment to celebrate and thank two aspen valley students caitlin dalton and jackson deeds for participating on my student advisory council this past year their honest feedback insightful input and energetic engagement represented all of the

aspen valley student body admirably thank you caitlin and thank you jackson today as we gather with family and friends to recognize and celebrate you i want to tell you about my uncle mike it has been nearly 40 years since i was sitting in your seat and about that long since i had a casual conversation with him yet his words of wisdom stick with me today and in fact i believe his words have shaped my life but before i share his wisdom it is first important to know a little bit about him my father was the youngest of five siblings with 15 years separating my dad and his eldest sister my uncle mike married my dad's eldest sister so it was 15 years difference there and then my uncle mike was 12 years older than my

aunt that he married i tell you this because you see by age that made him feel to me more like a grandfather than most of my other uncles he was born in 1912. uncle mike lived through the great depression and experienced the same poverty and hardship so many others faced during those times can't flip too many pages this experience left him a no nonsense no frills hard working brutally honest strict but yet sometimes a gentle man his nickname was froggy i never learned exactly where his nickname originated but it stuck with him his entire life he grew his own fruits and vegetables in a garden that occupied most of his one acre property in canyon city colorado when you visited his home you knew you had to follow his rules if you didn't he had

a special voice that demanded conformity it was gruff it was direct and it was short on words he had an innate ability to be intimidating he loved to fish and hunt not necessarily for sports but out of necessity he did so for food he had a non-negotiable rule when fishing you had to eat whatever you caught there was no such thing as waste if you caught four fish you'd better be prepared to eat four fish i learned to be very aware of how many fish i was catching when i was with him and may have secretly released a few back to the water both out of fear and respect as a result of living through the great depression uncle mike did not trust banks he was reluctant to deposit money did not use credit and

refused any sort of debt he operated solely in cash if he wanted to invest he bought gold and he hid it throughout his house and throughout his property uncle mike was uncle mike was never one who liked having a boss he was not of a personality to accept oversight or being told what to do as a result he and my aunts opened a drive-in restaurant in canyon city this is years ago by the way called froggies poor boy the drive-in was successful in canyon city and after a few years they opened froggy's poor boy drive-ins throughout the west including ones in walesburg that's in colorado if any of you don't know durango cortez and the last one in moab utah he operated these drive-ins until he retired in 1963. he worked extremely hard to build

his business scattered over five cities and two states customers drove miles to have one of these froggies hamburgers and a beer for 15 cents he did hamburgers better than any other competitor of that day that's a little bit of history now one summer i was home from college my mother and i decided to visit my uncle and my aunt in canyon city as i was sitting with my uncle in the small living room in the house that he built we began discussing his life experiences and my future when with when with uncle mike i felt tremendous pressure to answer his questions in such a way that he could and would be proud of me and i might even impress him i wanted to tell i wanted him to tell me that i was going to

do going down the right path make the right decisions and that i was going to be successful he asked me what my college course of study was i proudly and confidently told him i was either going to major in mechanical engineering or mathematics i felt good about my answer i felt that my course of study would impress him and he would express his admiration or at least give me his approval however his response was nothing what i expected he offered neither admiration nor approval instead he said young man that's fine but that's not what's important let me tell you something he said in a stern non-apologetic way it doesn't matter what course of study you choose and in fact you said it doesn't even matter if you finish your studies what is most important is

that whatever you choose to do in life you do it better than anyone else does it doesn't matter if you go into medicine construction law trash trash collection or the restaurant business whatever it is you must do it better than anyone else does it you can be and this is almost a direct quote from him you can be a ditch digger he said if you dig ditches better than anyone else digs dishes you will be successful this is not what i expected to hear from him but to this day it stands as the most accurate important and impactful piece of advice i've ever received i've tried to live my life as he advised and i've seen his wisdom play out over and over again in the lives of friends relatives co-workers and graduates uncle mike

passed in 2003 at the age of 90 but our conversation that day years ago and the wisdom he shared has lived with me ever since i've shared his advice with my children if you ask them probably one too many times i've shared with them as i share it with you today two degrees a life of learning in 32 years and a career later and still the most important and impactful learning of my life i received sitting on the plastic covered sofa from my uncle mike in his living room so my advice to you today as you leave high school and enter college trade school military or the workforce comes from my uncle mike success is not determined by what you do it's determined by how how excuse me by how well you do it whatever

it is you do do it better than anyone else and success will follow these words were true to him in the 19th and 20th century and will remain true through the 21st century i think they will last forever so with that i congratulate the class of and i wish you a hopeful fulfilling and successful future be well be safe and thank you all and congratulations once again thank you mr gregory at each graduation members of the senior class are asked if any of them would like to speak this year we have three senior speakers first to the podium is caitlyn dalton caitlin has attended aspen valley since middle school and her parents also attended aspen valley caitlin will continue at pikes peak community college next year and will work as a cna until she completes

her registered nurse degree caitlin come on up [Applause] i'm too short all right hi my name is caitlin dalton i've been at aspen valley since 8th grade which feels like i've been here forever during my time at aspen a lot of things have changed we went from a normal comfortable experience at middle school to a scary more demanding life at high school through we worked through these changes of a new principal and lived high school through covid through these difficult but great four years there have been a group of staff members here that that have been here for me since day one these staff members made aspen valley feel like more like a home for myself and the rest of the student body mama joe mr fisher miss bauman and miss wasserman you deserve a

shout out for how special you all are you have been there for my whole high school experience and i've gone above and beyond to make my days brighter i wanted to take some time and appreciate you and tell you why you made aspen valley feel more like a home mama joe you are one of the kindest souls i've ever met i bet everyone in this school would agree since my freshman year you've always been a bright smiling face every sorry every time i've gone to talk to you you make sure to tell me how proud you are of me and how beautiful you believe i am thank you for always being such a highlight of my days miss wasserman since freshman year art class it was one of my favorite classes you always made it

a nice place to get away from any drama and you've honestly helped so many kids with the advice you've given them i also want to thank mystic for being such a good sweet boy he is the best thank you for being such a caring woman and creating a nice atmosphere wherever you are mr fisher you've always been like my at school dad with your dumb dad jokes and how you ran class and the advice you gave you truly made my days better thank you for truly caring about me and always listening to my rants hey fisher what's the best thing about switzerland i don't know but the flag is a big plus and finally miss bauman from the first day i had you my sophomore year you've always cared about me i will be forever

thankful for all you've done for me you truly are one of the biggest reasons i made sure i came to school thank you for being you and to the rest of the staff thank you all for making aspen valley a home aspen valley a home for me and making my high school experience great if not for the academic experience aspen has provided me the past four years it would have been a lot harder and i wouldn't have the opportunity to further my education and become a nurse i would i truly appreciate all of you oh and thank you all for giving me a's it feels pretty cool to be valedictorian thank you [Applause] that was wonderful caitlyn thank you so much our next speaker is zoe schultz zoe has also attended aspen valley since middle

school zoe is attending fort lewis college where she hopes to work as an animal behaviorist one day zoe thank you crazy i i'm not the greatest at species so bear with me hope i don't bore you but anyways like you said my name's zoe and i have been at aspen valley since seventh grade which is crazy like caitlyn said it feels like it's been forever i can't believe we're all here today it's just a crazy thing but who here does wish they were back in kindergarten you all can raise your hands i do not judge but anyway i can't believe like it doesn't feel real until like right now i walked in here and i put on my cap and gown and we went on the stage and i'm like i can't believe i did

this i made it here and i just can't believe how far i've made it because honestly i didn't think i'd make it to this point back in like early elementary i was horrible at school like my best grade was a c and that was gym so yeah i was just i didn't understand it i was like grates behind in like every subject but come fourth grade i actually had decided to move colorado before that i was living in texas but when i moved here i went into counseling just to kind of help with the adjustment you know just make sure i was doing okay you know because like moving states is a huge thing and through that i found out i have autism and atd which definitely helped figure out ways to help with school

and everything and it did i became a bc student which was great except i was still like two grades behind in math and reading and so all my elementary school and into middle school i was just like oh um we'll just put her in that's next grade she'll catch up yeah i did not come sixth grade my mom is so upset because i'm not getting the help i need and she's literally yelling at all the teachers because i'm not getting what i need and so at that point i was given two options either go to a different school be held back because they didn't want me to get bullied so if i was going to be held back they didn't want me to get made fun of or come to aspen valley i think we

all know which one i chose anyway since then my grades drastically improved i am now an ab student with a 3.8 gpa thank you but i have like climbed mountains to get to that point and i wouldn't have done it without so many of my family members and i would specifically like to thank two people which one of them could not be here today um she lives in texas it's my grandmother i if she could she would be here but um fortunately she's not and she'd love to be here though um she is amazing so when i moved to colorado i have like so much family in colorado like it's not even funny like i can point and you'd find a family member but um i didn't get contact from most of them and my

grandmother though she wrote me letters every month when i moved here and it just became our thing she reached out she always was there for me growing up when i was struggling she was the one who helped me make sure get my homework done she helped raise me she put up with me because i was just such a stubborn kid but yeah i just really want to appreciate her for that the second person i like to recognize is my colorado mom she was the one who helped me with my homework she's the one who was yelling at all those teachers by the way yeah don't mess with her do not make her mad at all but she has helped me with everything she i wouldn't be where i am today without her and i can

see her crying over there but i would like to thank you you have helped me so far i can see you cry i'm going to cry now but i would just like to thank you you are the reason i am here today getting my diploma but yes thank you run and plus to her she deserves it [Applause] but lastly i'd like actually to thank caitlyn and kevin and ms zimmerman they're the ones who helped me prepare this speech last week um just without them like i'd be like stumbling over my words more than i already am but yeah and i just can't wait for what happens next thank you [Applause] nicely done zoe our last speaker is one of our student leaders through student council kevin cummings kevin plans to pursue a career in real

estate and since our annual career day he has already made multiple connections in the field with his charisma please welcome kevin [Applause] man i honestly didn't think i'd be here right now i didn't think i would have the opportunity to graduate on time and i just i have to preface this whole speech by letting you all know ahead it's on this is going to be the longest thank you that you will ever hear in your life but i really do want to give a special thank you to everybody out there in the audience right now everybody that's on this stage right now because i would not personally be here without each and every one of you you all somehow played a role in these people's lives that played a role in my life or if

you didn't you directly played some type of role and i just really want to have to say thank you and i feel like this thank you wouldn't have any gravity without mentioning that before i even got to the school before i really started to try and care about schooling i did not care about anything i didn't care about school i didn't care about myself i didn't care about others i did a lot of moving so i found it easy to just simply not care yeah as time goes on i began to mature i had an experience with raising my niece and i think that really contributed a lot to my growth as a person and coming to aspen valley that really allowed me to put all of that care that i had really grown to

have for my niece and helped me extend it out to the world and i really do have to say thank you to each and every single one of you guys because i wouldn't be here standing up here with the microphone in a dream without each and every single one of you here i am so grateful and i am indebted to each and every one of you for it and with that i would have to say that i mean we made it you know i'm i'm these people i'm you all you are all somehow a way that i am who i am right now and i'm so very appreciative and with that i would have to give an honorary special thanks to my man mr bernie down there yeah i don't think you understand sir at

that stuka retreat when you gave me those two pieces of advice it stuck with me so even now so that i could stand up here and want to inspire you all want to inspire the world try and reach out and make some type of change your first piece of advice to me was if i want the woman of my dreams i have to be the man of hers right and the second one is always wake up and be the best version of yourself that you can possibly be and i i cannot lie i'm not a perfect person sometimes i wake up and i fail that challenge but that does not stop me from each and every morning trying to wake up and be the best version of myself that i can be that man right

there is my inspiration i aspire to be like you sir and i appreciate you and i just want to have to give one last thanks you all are so amazing and i appreciate you all for coming here today so i can give you this thanks because right now we've all made it you know each and every bad moment that we've all had each and every good moment we've had everything that's happened thus far has led up to this precise moment and with that i would like to say let's keep going let's do it again let's do something greater as people thank you [Applause] always memorable kevin thank you before and and honestly that kind of represents um our diversity and the uh charisma that is this class very many different stories i gotta watch this

podium i'll knock it right back over um i would i would also like to share a few thoughts uh before we go ahead and confer diplomas for these fine individuals here i've been here for three years and want to share some reflections as i've got to watch them grow up a little bit and as mr gregory said it's a lot about how you do a job but i would also want to add that my reflections are all about why we do what we do why you've been through the path that you've been and how it will hopefully cause us all to do a little reflection as what kevin mentioned in his speech so aspen valley class of 2022 know that i am truly honored to be standing here with you and your family reminiscing over

these last few years albeit challenging years to be sure pumas you have navigated your school journey well and have accomplished more in the last four years than any typical graduating classes have i could not be any more proud of you than i am today as i said this is my third graduation as principal and you are aspen's 26th graduating class every year for the last three years we have been in completely different venues we've had completely different plans we are hoping that this is the new future home for aspen graduations aspen is a small school as we all know but your class is exceptionally small however yours is the first to enjoy this beautiful new setting where we have lots of room to grow this is also the first graduation where the entire aspen valley

village can join us in celebration we are a family at aspen valley and our motto is pumas take care of pumas this is but one example yours seems to be a class of firsts what else is in store for you first pandemic first to know the work of hybrid learning and now this staff and family venue are our firsts clearly a trailblazing class graduating from high school as we know is one of life's big events and this milestone causes to pause and look back i've been reflecting for the last many months and looking for the lessons in the moments that have defined your formative years while doing so many questions came to my mind but they all started with why most of these questions are rhetorical but i bet you have pondered the same ones

over these last few years why did you choose aspen valley instead of a traditional setting why did you stay at aspen after mr stone retired why did you choose to return to a brick-and-mortar school throughout the pandemic time after time why did covid happen during your tenure some of your peers stayed online why didn't you still some of your peers earned their ged why did you choose to work towards your diploma sitting here today why didn't you choose to leave school and start work sooner why did you keep getting up schlepping your way to school and pushing through subconsciously or consciously pumas voluntarily or not you chose the following you chose daily planner requirements with accountability and evaluations every class every day every year you agreed to a ninety percent attendance uh hectorly attendance rate

you followed academic expectations that didn't allow you to earn d's for credits standing here today means you chose to successfully complete your first college class some of you as of this morning all of you complied with our cpr training 180 hours of work experience and 72 hours of community service and that is on top of everything else why throughout high school career during some of the most difficult times in education you chose a tougher and more rigorous path you chose to go through aspen valley's doors reflecting on your reasons we will take you some time and i do urge you to spend some time this summer processing those questions for contemplating those reasons you will prepare propel prepare for and propel yourself beyond august of this year and why august august of 2022 will be

the real test of your why when most adolescents will be going back to compulsory secondary schooling some of you will be heading to college by choice some of you will be heading to work instill some of you into the military august of 2022 is when your real life begins some of your answers to my earlier questions might be grounded in because my parents made me however soon choices will all be yours and decisions ought to be conscious and thoughtful and grounded in why your decisions have taken guts jaden jackson tia coy malik dylan and dylan zoe ian owen caitlin kevin lane and timothy you have moxie you have adapted and conquered you have braved a non-traditional school setting you've put on and off your masks suffered in and out of quarantines bounced between in-class learning

and online learning work with new staff member after new staff member avoided and were even restricted from traditional gatherings and then mustered through as we redefined what normal was again what else stands out about this class of what other firsts will you accomplish i've observed you honoring our motto and taking care of one another some of you have been friends since middle school or beyond and some of you only got to know each other in just the last couple years but your collective school experiences have uniquely bonded you as unique as each of you are graduates you might very well be each other's why as we heard in some of your speeches we've seen your courageous acts of selflessness and your triumph over horrendous odds you've lived experiences that are still shaping what you believe

to be true and worthy your past is starting to define you but the work isn't finished yet and far from it i urge you to keep asking yourselves why repeatedly as your future life's experiences reveal more uncertainties more struggles more opportunities more hope and if you choose more joy pumas you have may i'm sorry you have you may have asked multiple times over the last three years why you and i propose today to consider why not you look at what you have already accomplished with your peers one final reflection for this class of 2022. and it came to me while working with jc and logan our performers over this last month logan and jc jc share their talents by performing the song count on me it's written by bruno mars while you may not be

a bruno fan you grew up to his music the song was also featured in one of the diary of wimpy kid movies another likely memory from your childhood reading up on the two artists peter hernandez which is bruno mars birth name and jeff kinney the author of wimpy kids series i discovered some interesting tidbits that resonated with this class the stories from the diary of a wimpy kid taught you not to think too highly of yourselves size isn't everything don't grow up too fast and family is really important these books inspired for many the love of reading but it was interesting to learn that it took the author over eight years to write the stories for his first book and that was after not finding success as a cartoonist mr mars grew up in hawaii

in a biracial home that was poverty stricken he lost his mother at a young age and was bullied in school he wrote the song count on me to show what true friendship looks like let me read some of those lyrics to you again if you forget how much you really mean to me every day i will remind you we'll find out what we're made of when we're called to help our friends in need you can count on me like one two three and i'll be there and i know when i need it i can count on you like 432 and you'll be there because that's what friends are supposed to do you'll always have my shoulder when you cry i'll never let go never say goodbye we'll find out what we're made of when we're

called to help our friends in need many of you too have struggled many of you did not find success at first many of you have lost someone and some of you may still feel like that wimpy kid and even if you're never going to see each other again after today your friendships the way you leaned on each other the way you counted on each other to be there and the way you rose and moments of needs those social and emotional lessons will propel you if you've learned nothing from our recent past remember that it is the people in your life that will always drive you to find your why i can assure you that you are the reason why we do what we do you are why your families and your friends are here celebrating

with you today soak that in class of 2022 come august when the old normal is no longer remember your whys and move forward go forth pumas we wish you the best and now what we've all been waiting for mrs cons it is with great pride that i present to you the members of the class of 2022 i hereby certify that these young men and women have met the requirements for an academy school district 20 diploma and have gone beyond that to fulfill aspen valley's additional graduation requirements i recommend them for their diplomas on behalf of the board of education of academy school district 20 and because you all have gone above and beyond what many other d20 graduates have and i'm so very proud of you i accept with pride and pleasure the graduating class
