Good evening. I'd like to call this October 27, 2025 Sylvania Board of Education meeting to order. Can you call the role? >> Miss Hoffman >> here. >> Mr. Conklin >> here. >> Mr. Lavallet >> here. >> Mr. Feller >> here. Mr. Pen >> here. >> Thank you. Please join us in the evening. >> I aliance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> To move the agenda, I think we want to have the superintendent report and presentation. So, we're going to adjust the agenda a little bit and uh have the superintendent record the presentation done in the long executive session. So, our presenter doesn't have to leave us that work. So, that puts us

with you. Thank you, Miss Hoffman. Good evening, everyone. Um it's a pleasure to see everyone today. Just a couple of things as part of my superintendence report. But I really just want to showcase some activities and highlights that have been taking place in the district and that will also take place in the next uh several weeks. First of all, last week Adam and I went to Rotary and presented to the Rotarians the state of the schools. It was a little bit of an overview of what's been going on in the district most recently in addition to Adam sharing his five-year forecast. Um was well attended. We were in a cramped little room, but we all were in the back room at Highland Country Club, but the food was good. So, everybody was happy, but we

had a lot of feed, positive feedback. I think the people received the the message very well, and Adam does a really fine job of taking very complicated information, which is Ohio school funding, and translating it into easy to understand language for a variety of folks that were in the audience. In addition, it was also nice to see our cougars and wild cats were also in attendance. Um, Mr. Pew had uh some student council folks in attendance uh that are really working to organize Veterans Day and the event that will be coming up is the annual event at Northview. And then South View, Dr. Ben athletes from the soccer team who we That's right. That's right. Pardon my little thunder here, Dr. V. Oh, that's okay because I think Mr. Feller may have some words to

say as well, but it's really congratulations to our Cougars because they're district champs and they're on their way to uh the regional semifinals. They play on Wednesday at Northview against Springfield. I don't know if you wanted to share a few words, Mr. Feller, as a proud father of has someone on that team. >> That's right. Big game. Number one in the state versus number three in the state. >> That's awesome. Legendary game 75 >> at North on Wednesday. Yep. >> Absolutely. >> Come come out and support the Cougars. >> That's right. That's right. Also, I wanted to share uh that we have a the North View Theater is presenting Charlotte's Web that's coming up on November 20th and 20 through the 22nd. Our theater uh students and both South View and Northview are absolutely incredible.

But if you can come out and support um I shared with the Rotarians the other day, it's a great date night. I mean, you can go and see like this great play and then turn around and go get some pizza and go home and call it a date night. And Charlotte, you can even bring the family to this one. So, it's all >> No sausages. >> No, no sausage. No sausage. Poor Charlotte. That would be offensive. Anyway, um and finally, I'm looking forward to one of our annual events. We have Dance Gold this weekend at North View. I'm so excited. I think last year I kind of um threw a surprise move with the North View Wildcats because I guess I just didn't think that Dr. Min could still dance and so I was dancing

with the students and joining in on the line dance but they're once again um doing a fundraiser for the Victory Center and they're just doing great things. I love the way our students in Sennsylvania pay it forward unlike any other district I've ever worked in. they have such a conscience about helping others and um those who are in need. It's just amazing and it's so organic for them and the fact that they learn it from such a young age, it's no doubt in my mind that they carry it on through their life after they cross the stage. So that's my superintendence report. Uh but the next part I would like to just roll into our presentation if I can. We have Martha Rothy here. Martha is from the Ohio School Boards Association and she's actually

our Northwest Regional Manager for OSBA and she's here to present some awards to our district because honestly, well, I don't want to steal your thunder. So, I'm going to go ahead and turn over the floor to you. Thank you for being here. >> My pleasure. Thank you for having me. Um, it's I'm thrilled to be here. Um I have put uh at the school board members places a brochure about our region and a little bit about how the state is divided up into five regions by the Ohio School Boards Association. We are obviously in the Northwest region. It's made up of 20 counties and 143 school districts. So I get to quite a few schoolboard meetings and really enjoy visiting school boards. Um, I do want to point out a couple things about our region.

We are governed by school board members who are who express an interest in serving on our executive committee. If any of you are ever interested in becoming more involved at the state and regional level, um I've attached my card to this brochure and I would be more than happy to answer any questions about that. That really gives you an opportunity to represent your district at the region and state level. So I would like to present that opportunity. We also have a number of awards that we give throughout our region. I've attached a brochure or it's really kind of a nomination form uh behind this original piece and this is an opportunity for school districts in our region to highlight educators in your region, community volunteers and leaders who have helped your district. Every district has

them. You know who the people who you can call on in your business community to help you. This is an opportunity to recognize them at one of our regional conferences in the spring and in the fall. In 2026, our spring conference will be held in March at Liberty Benton School in Hancock County. And since I live in Hancock County, I can tell you it's 52 miles. And then our fall conference will be held in North Baltimore. So um if there are people that you feel um are excellence and community service, humanitarian and outstanding leadership, I would encourage you to nominate them. And this is the form. It's short and sweet. We also offer for any of your senior students going into education, we have a scholarship opportunity and that is online at the OSBA website

and if you go to the Northwest region. It's called the Bonnie Eddie Educational and Book Grant Supply Award. It's we have five $500 scholarships. So that is due December 1st. So if you have any senior students going into education, I would encourage them to apply. Now my main reason for being here is this district has done something no other district since I've had this position has ever done and I really want to congratulate you. It's it's amazing. Um, the Purple Star Award is given annually by the Ohio Department of Education to schools that show a significant commitment to serving students and families connected to our nation's military. In 2025, 115 schools received the esteemed award for the first time and 252 schools earned a renewal after 3 years as dedicated purple star schools. The Northwest

region is proud to announce that tonight, Sylvania City Schools has 12 schools who have earned the Purple Star Award. I have a whole stack of superintendent here, but I would like to read them. Arbor Hills Junior High School, Central Trail Elementary School, Highland Elementary School, Hill View Elementary School, Maplewood Elementary School, McCord Junior High School, Northview High School, South View High School, Straan Elementary School, Silvin Elementary School, Timberstone Junior High School, and Whiteford Elementary School. Congratulations to all of you for making this a priority in your district. You should feel amazingly proud. So, um I don't know if you want me to just give you the whole stack here, Dr. Mley, or I would like to accept these. I can pass them out individually, too. >> We might want to just keep them here. >>

Thank you very much. >> Congratulations. This is amazing. >> Very fantastic. Thank you. Um, Miss Addington, is there a way that we could get a photo maybe over here against this wall? Would you mind, Miss Happy to do that? >> Let's do it. >> She can hold the certificate. I'm the only >> That's right, Cam. >> She is a veteran here. >> There we go. >> Thank you for changing your agenda to my pleasure. Congratulations. Yeah, that's it. >> Know what we had to do? >> Yeah. I just want to say >> do we want to know? >> Yeah. So, so what qualifies a school to be a purple star school? There are certain criteria that are established by the Ohio Department of Education and if you go to Purple Star School, um they have

a website and you have it's it's not a simple thing to do. Um you have to show that you have exhibited those characteristics in your building to support military families. I don't have all the criteria in front of me, but um it's it's not a simple thing. And the fact that you have 12 schools, that's amazing. >> Which is all of our schools. >> Yeah. I just >> a lot of times in districts, there's a key person who's who kind of takes the initiative and makes that happen. >> It's Melissa McDonald's. Melissa. >> Melissa McDonald. Well, thank you, Melissa McDonald. >> Yeah. Usually it's one person like who might be in one building but if this person >> we kind of report each of our buildings report to her like what we're doing then there

was like a on there was a link online that we had to fill out the things we've done but she had kept everything tracked for us in a spreadsheet we basic so we could like cut and paste some of the things we had already done. So I did everything over the summer through her and I'm sure every building did the same. >> Yeah. So that key person Melissa, she drove that for your district and um so you are recognized all over the state for this and I don't know of any other schools. I would have to contact the Ohio Department of Education to see if um any other districts have all of their buildings as >> you might want to know that. >> Absolutely. >> That would be a significant >> Yeah. You know what?

There are some smaller districts that only have maybe three schools, an elementary, a middle, and a high school. And they are all, but you have a >> 12 large district. >> Yeah. I I just say we will definitely do some more digging and make sure that we highlight this accolade because I think what really is so important is that our families that are are serving >> and their veterans are getting the support they need through transition or through just support in our buildings each and every day and our teachers and administrators um have made it a priority. So, I appreciate and say thank you not only to Melissa, but the folks who are in the buildings, boots on the ground, literally and figuratively, I guess, uh, making it happen, make sure our military families who

are serving every day to make sure that we have what we have here tonight. So, thank you again for acknowledging us. We appreciate >> all of you. Thank you very much. >> Okay, we want to move into executive session. >> Yes, ma'am. I would like to go into executive discussion for the um for the purpose of to consider the appointment, employment, dismissal, discipline, promotion or compensation of a public school employee or official. >> Okay. >> So move second. >> Julie, >> yes. >> Greg, >> yes. >> Dan, yes. >> Tammy, >> yes. >> Kim, >> yes. >> And we will be taking action when we return. >> Okay. Thank you. And we are back from executive session. recommendations to recommendations. >> Yes, ma'am. I recommend item 3.1 which is recognition of achievement. We have a

couple of students from um North View who tested for the SAT it looks like in August and September and earned a score of 600 or above. >> Approval. A second. That was your question. >> Congratulations. >> Hannah. >> Julie. >> Yes. >> Kim. >> Yes. Tammy. >> Yes. >> Greg, >> yes. >> Dan, >> yes. >> Thank you. And then we're at our first opportunity for public participation on the agenda. See none. >> All right. Uh consent agenda for the month. Uh 5.1 is meetings from September 22nd, October 15th. Uh treasures report uh as of September uh 2025. Um now comparing to the forecast and comparing month over month uh similar to last year. So that report is in there. Availability of funds. We did have one uh that we got the purchase order in

uh one day um after uh 5.4 is just an annual request to uh Lucas County to request advance on taxes. So we normally get two advances uh for the year. So we'll get an advance in January uh in early February and then the final settlement will be the end of February. So this just gives us gives them their authorization to to give us advances throughout the year. Uh and then 5.5 is uh transfers. Uh this is an annual approval uh to transfer funds from the general fund to our severance fund that is used to pay uh severance payments for our certified and administrative staff. >> Thank you. I move approval on a consent agenda basis items 5.1 through 5.5 second. >> Any comments or questions? Can I go on that wasn't? >> Yeah, you can.

>> Oh, okay. >> I looked into that a couple months ago. >> Unless you're not pull out. I'm sure you're accurate. >> Adam. >> Julie. >> Yes. >> Dam. >> Yes. >> Greg, >> yes. >> Tammy, >> yes. >> Kim, >> yes. >> Thank you guys. >> Thank you. I would like to recommend item 6.1 which is an overnight field trip for our southeast students who will go to Terode Indiana to attend the Nike regional cross country meet and that will take place next month. >> Second is question. >> Greg, >> yes. >> Tammy, >> yes. >> Julie, >> yes. >> Dian, >> yes. >> Kim, >> yes. Thank you. >> Thank you. And now you're working. >> Thanks. I will recommend items 7.1 through 7.4 as consent agenda items. 7.1 are license substitutes. 7.2

licensed to resignation. 7.3 are lifeguards for Murphytorium and 7.4 is license. >> I'll move for approval on a consent agenda basis item 7.1 through 7.4. >> I'll second comments or questions. I do have a a question. I know uh Kathy Korn is over at Highland, right? I mean, do we have a plan? It's kind of like we'll have somebody leave like right now. >> We do. And so, we've already started that transition plan with uh the teacher of ours that is on the lab recall list. So, she is a SA teacher. She taught us at Central Trail last year. Um she will be making the transition over the next couple weeks. was also present um last week to meet with uh families with Kathy Korn and the kids to start to get to know the

kids, the parents and make that transition from this kindergarten. It'll be a couple weeks of transition time where they're both there together all the way up until winter break. Um and then she'll take that new teacher teacher come just Thursday and Friday. Steve Swagger did a really nice job on that communication kindergarten parent that transition pretty seamless. It seems as a goal for for kindergarten students. >> Okay. >> We built in probably more than a full week than we normally would with a transition time because of getting >> Thank you, >> Tammy. >> Yes. >> Julie, >> yes. >> Dean, >> yes. >> Greg, >> yes. >> Kim, >> yes. >> Thank you. I will recommend items 8.1 and 8.2 2 is consent agenda items. 8.1 classified new employers and 8.2 are classified personal changes.

I move on items 8.13. >> A second comments or questions? >> Yes. >> Julie, >> yes. >> Kim, >> yes. >> Tammy, >> yes. >> Greg, >> yes. >> Dan, >> yes. >> Thank you. I will recommend items 9.1 through 9.4 agenda basis. 9.1 our supplemental positions for 2526. 9.2 are non-eing pupil activity contracts for 2526. 9.3 volunteers for 2526. And 9.4 are changes, corrections, and resignations supplements for 2526. I'll move for approval on a consent agenda basis items 9.1 to 9.4. I'll >> second. Any comments or questions? Greg, >> yes. >> Julie, >> yes. >> Kim, >> yes. >> Tammy, >> yes. Dan, >> yes. Thank you. >> Um, not a ton. Had a Sylvania rec meeting, a CIC meeting. Nothing really to report on those. Um, and had a safe yard meeting and

just, um, the projects. They're going to redo the one concession stand at Centennial. Um, tear it down and rebuild it. actually a concession stand and kind of where you enter for the um core and then um build a new like storage building out of center. So those those projects are moving forward. >> So is that concession not the the concession stand in the back not the one? >> Yeah, the one in the back by the quy that's going to get taken down a new one. Um yeah, I mean my my only note is that um nominations for um the Hall of Fame are due October 31st. Julie took a lot of notes. Oh gracious. >> Um >> yeah. Um well, we talked about Charlotte's Web. Um South was putting on the third wave. Is that

a fall play? Yeah, they used to do a musical, but now they've switched around. The musical is going to be the spring. >> Okay, that's what Dorothy is doing, too. >> Yeah, is doing the same thing here. >> Yeah, this is >> Yeah. I mean, are they both Are they both doing fall? What I'm saying, are they both doing fall >> plays and spring musicals now? Okay. Cuz they used to >> They used to be every other >> Oh. Um, McKenna Wrights was nominated to be a newborn member. Um you may recall McKenna from the um process uh the board vacancy selection process. Um and I we did a we didn't have a quorum so we did an online vote but do you know did that pass? >> I think I think it passed. >>

Yeah. I'm going to leave the rest of this. >> Okay. Um, so community services. Uh, we're working hard and heavy on the levy. Um, get out the vote. Um, and we have communications meeting. Uh, district digest coming out. I think you all got that email, the survey. That's all I have. Okay. We did have a prevention of lives meeting. Um, the walk of life was October 8th. Um I don't know if you're all aware like Walk of Light was like an annual thing that um Sylvania staff did. So they're trying to bring it back. Um I understand you and there so thank you for showing up. Um I don't think they had a great showing. Steve Swagger was like the presenter, but they're going to you know maybe uh hopefully it's just going to pick

up steam and go back to what he used to do. You got anything on that? >> No, I'm talking to Doug Cheney. same type of thing when they got it started. Was it 20 years ago? Kind of like relay for life. I think it started a little bit smaller and it took to grow each year. So, >> Yeah. 24-hour relay, which >> 24 which is coming back, but it won't be 24 hours. So, no, >> they're um working on that and um I would say the thing on the foundation was they talked a lot about the um lift uh that's going on with career tech >> lift program >> the lift program which was fantastic. So he was pretty excited about that. >> I have a launch date. I think it's next Tuesday to launch

that program throughout the community and with the chamber. >> Yeah, Steve was there at foundation and did a nice he did a really nice presentation. So I don't think I have anything else. I do. >> Okay. And then this is a second opportunity for public participation not on the agenda. Seeing none, I move that we go into executive session for >> Adam. >> What's that? >> Me. >> Julie? >> Yes. >> Greg? >> Yes. >> Tammy? >> Yes. >> Kim? >> Yes. >> Kim? >> Yes. >> Thank you.
