019and is interested in working in law enforcement please welcome gauge maiden for the phone just take my time good morning ladies and gentlemen today is a day filled with inspiration and excitement and about every other emotion a person could have i have the privilege today of talking to you as we the class of 2021 graduates from pine creek high school [Applause] now if you don't know me i'm gage meda first i want to give an enormous congrats to everyone including myself for all we've accomplished the world we live in in the midst of the covet pandemic is much different than anything we've encountered before it has affected all of us but we are finding the courage to rise above our ears and find our way through the obstacles we face we have had many occasions
020to exercise our resiliency and problem solving skills recently class of 2021 parents administrators and teachers we have absolutely turned our challenges into opportunities it was only four years ago that we all came together and walked through the doors of pine creek high school for the very first time only last year as hard-working juniors we couldn't have guessed that we were going to be shut down and transferred to online school it was a hard and stressful time but we got through it we need to remember that our experiences of overcoming adversity are actually making us stronger and better people we all have experience with overcoming adversity mine is that i have autism and i've been on an iep my whole school career i have had failing grades and fought to bring them up i will be
021graduating with a 3.2 grade point average [Applause] i've also been on homecoming court participate in sports theater co-piloted a plane more than once have been on student council and have honestly had more opportunities than i deserved no one would have thought in years past that i would have the opportunity to give a graduation speech to my graduating class this class even though our struggles may be different we know that our success has not been without the help of great friends teachers tutors and family all the people that believed in us have encouraged us and have helped us find our way thank you we need to remember to turn to each other when we're faced with challenges pine creek has good and kind people and i am lucky to have hung out with them our teachers
022have been so helpful in each grade and class to me and my peers who need help we can't leave out noting our appreciation to the administrators deans security and staff to keep the school running and for supervising different things like sporting events dances student council plays musicals clubs and athletics that we offer as a school our families offer us help in any area that we are struggling with we all recognize we are lucky to be in an environment where we can learn i wonder what life is going to be we will leave high school as seniors like attending different colleges finding a job and getting to know what it will be like to become a responsible adult here is my appeal to my class always remember we are equipped to overcome whatever comes our way

027did you represent the pine creek high school student voice with honor and pride your perspective regarding many topics such as the effectiveness effectiveness of our website online learning covet frustrations equity and inclusion graduation ceremonies and many other topics was valued and constructive thank you lena well class of 2021 congratulations you've made it you navigated some of the most difficult circumstances faced by students in decades you sacrificed the end of your junior year and continued that sacrifice through your senior year and your senior year has been like no other remote learning in-person learning online learning and hybrid learning that's a lot of learning and all that learning include a host of new norms such as mask breaks cohorting social distancing quarantines hand sanitizer more quarantines more hand sanitizer and more quarantines you endured shortened athletic seasons
028online concert and employees outdoor proms numerous cancellations [Music] and dare i say it not one single snow day this was not all your senior year was by was marked by some of the most contentious social and political events in history your senior year has been one of historical proportions you made history in 10 20 and even 50 years students and teachers will read about your journey in history classes but through it all you persevered you were patient flexible and you showed grit in short you demonstrated resilience resilience is described as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties or the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape or simply put being elastic resilience is now a part of your dna and frankly that is a good thing because resilience is a characteristic
029you will need to lean on throughout your life i wish i could tell you things will get easier and resilience is a trait only needed in 2020 and 2021 but the truth is whether through your job education or your relationships you will face challenges you overcame the challenges of your senior year and you will continue to overcome future challenges because you are adaptable you are persistent you are resilient and you are creative problem solvers an article in the journal in the journal of medical science from 2016 states resilience is an individual's ability to adaptively respond to hardship stress and adversity it is the ability to bounce back that describes each of you that same article also reads individuals who report high levels of resilience typically portray an optimistic outlook positive emotionality curiosity and openness to
030new experiences they are able to emerge from a challenge stronger wiser and more powerful resilience correlates strongly with success interpersonal satisfaction happiness and hope as you leave here today prepare to make your mark on this world i ask that you use the events of the last 16 months to propel you forward no matter how much the world tries to hold you back challenge you or knock you down always continue with the belief that what you want to achieve is possible don't lose hope stay confident believe in the possibilities channel your curiosity seek solutions to problems that others can't see you can find your hope through many means hope can arise from simply taking in new information or gaining new knowledge sometimes it may be just the smile of a trusted friend the friend who trusts
031in you or in your ability to find a creative solution to a new problem as described in the story of the lone shark and the daughter the story goes in a small italian town many years ago a small business owner owed a large sum of money to a loan shark the long shark was an old rough looking guy that just so happened to fancy the business owner's daughter the loan shark offered the businessman a deal that would dissolve the business man's debt however there was a catch the catch was that he would only forgive the debt if he could marry the businessman's daughter needless to say this proposal was met with disgust but as the story goes the loan shark proposed that he would place two pebbles into a bag one white and one red
032the daughter would then have to reach into the bag and pick a pebble if the pebble was red the debt would be forgiven and the loan shark would have to marry would get to marry the daughter if the stone selective was white the debt would still be forgiven but the daughter would not marry the loan shark so standing on a path strewn with red and white pebbles in the businessman's garden the loan shark bent over and picked up two pebbles as he was picking them up the daughter noticed that he'd pick up two red pebbles and placed them both into the bag he then asked the daughter to reach in the bag and pick one naturally the daughter had three choices as to what she could do one refused to pick a pebble from the
033bag which would not help her father two take both pebbles out of the bag and expose the loan shark for a cheater which also would not help her father or three pick a pebble from the bag full well knowing it was gonna be red and sacrifice herself for her father's financial freedom so she reluctantly drew a pebble from the bag and before the color was discovered she appeared to accidentally drop it to the ground undetectable amid the other pebbles she had quickly engineered a fourth option after a short pause she said to the loan shark oh how clumsy of me but if you look into the bag the pebble that is left you will be able to tell which pebble i dropped the pebble left in the bag is obviously red and knowing the loan
034shark didn't want to be exposed he had to play along as if the pebble the daughter dropped was white her father's debt was cleared and a loan shark defeated her creative solution saved the situation in an instant the father and daughter went from feeling hopeless to feeling hopeful as a result of a short moment in time when she saw solutions others did not as martin luther king jr stated we must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite hope you are graduating today from a great school in a fabulous district in a terrific community in a wonderful state in the greatest country in the world you have every reason to be hopeful and optimistic as you reflect and celebrate on your time in high school remember you did not make the journey alone please take time
035to thank the friends teachers parents grandparents and or anyone else who pushed or even pulled you to this day congratulations pine creek high school class of 2021 i wish you a successful hopeful and fulfilling future be well and be safe thank you of 2021 collectively you have had four years of achievement among you are students who will attend the most prestigious colleges universities and military academies in america more than 85 percent of you are pursuing higher education in the fall 20 seniors will be serving our country next fall as enlisted rotc scholarship recipients or academy appointees thank you you have set high goals for future pursuits and we are proud of your work ethic and perseverance together you have earned more than 18 million dollars in scholarship in this graduating class are those who have
036achieved in the top 10 percent in the nation on college entrance exams earned nearly perfect scores on the act and sat and many have been recognized as outstanding scholars through the college application process you are butcher scholars presidential chancellor provost daniel and community scholars pine creek is home to three of the city's best and brightest at pine creek we have 15 honors societies representing every academic endeavor our school offers more than 180 seniors in the class of are members of these honors societies visual arts had an amazing year in this year of online learning five seniors received various awards at the colorado 5th congressional district art awards show and were honored by congressman delga lamborn one senior was chosen to create the official graphics logo for the sangri latino colorado springs switchback supporter group five
037seniors received first place awards at the colorado scholastic art awards show and out of those five two seniors received top gold medal awards from national scholastic art less than two percent of artists are honored by scholastic art awards nationally and we have some students where their photography will be on display in various galleries around the nation and online for the next two years knowledgeable looked a little different this year due to all virtual competitions however students competed in one league meet and the regional competition because of their outstanding performance at regionals the pine creek high school knowledge bowl team earned bids to the state tournament and two national competitions five seniors were on yearbook staff this year seniors served as the editor-in-chief and sports editor creating a yearbook in any year is a challenge but
038doing so in a pandemic is an extremely extraordinary achievement these students not only created a beautiful yearbook but learned an entirely new software program and created an extensive spring supplement which will include today's ceremony four seniors in this class are members of the quill and scroll journalism honors society 28 seniors have been members of fbla they have been the heart and soul of the organization and accumulated four state championships and nine national qualifiers the speech and debate team made the most of this year's virtual environment with 42 students competing the pine creek speech and debate team has moved first in the region and 10th in the state this season the individual members earned a combined total of 113 awards including 11 invitational tournament champions five national qualifying regional champions two chassa regional champions and one
039chassa state champion one of our world schools debate teams went undefeated all year at the national qualifying tournament the pine creek team qualified our largest group of 12 students for nationals in june and the team won three regional sweepstakes for congress debate and overall tournament the leading chapter award for the first time in 23 years the pine creek speech and debate team is hosting the regional traveling trophy for the next year for the most points cumulatively earned at the national qualifying tournament one of our graduating seniors is pine creek's first official national speech and debate association academic all-american in this senior class our deca members let our three student-run businesses the crete cafe the early eagle coffee shop and crete concessions 233 students participated in a virtual district conference 31 students qualified for the state
040deca conference and 15 students qualified and participated in the international career development conference hosa had success with 80 student members and met monthly on microsoft teams where they were able to spotlight important health issues at the state leadership conference there were 15 students and three teams who placed in the top 10 10 of which placed in the top three from this pool of winners 11 students will attend the virtual international leadership conference in june our student council led by an outstanding executive and senior officer team demonstrated tremendous pride in their school community in irrevocable patience and understanding this year they have always demonstrated strong leadership abilities but this year they proved to be more resilient and more innovative than any of us could have imagined these seniors were relentless in finding ways to connect with
041their student body and make school as much fun as possible through their efforts we were able to host virtual spirit days support our football team during homecoming and showcase our young talent with virtual talent shows they created a touching veterans day assembly and celebrated our unique staff with teacher takeovers our students collected for harvest of love and even volunteer on their own to help those in need finally these students were able to put together a dance and oh what a dance it was prom 2021 will be one to remember and even our neighboring community cheered them along as they got a few hours to enjoy being a senior at pine creek high school pine creek choirs were able to continue their tradition of excellence despite the pademic in the fall they performed their songs virtually
042this spring all choirs performed their concerts in person highlighting all the literature they prepared throughout the year pine creek's theater department known as creek theater continually adapted to our ever changing climate with a virtually auditioned rehearsed recorded edited and streamed fall production of it's a wonderful life a radio drama which involved over 50 cast and crew members who worked entirely from home as things began looking up clue on stage with casting crew members and cohorts welcomed limited in-person audience back to the pine creek auditorium to enjoy four live performances this spring many honors in band and orchestra came due to the seniors in the class of 2021 they performed as the honor ensemble at the colorado music educators association state conference they were i apologize i need to start over on this section these students
043are changing the world of music and their legacy will inspire the program for years to come our seniors have given support to many worthy causes and organizations in colorado springs area and beyond this senior class has provided community service through creek in the community friends of rachel sources of strength and numerous honor societies as well as many outside organizations where they have amassed thousands of volunteer hours in this class we are honored to have a junior olympic qualifier and air rifle one of the first women to earn her eagle scout a nationally recognized sparring athlete and a senior who led a team of employees as a locator foreman in directional drilling while still in high school among you are the cities and state's best athletes this year pine creek was crowned league champions in three
044different sports most of pine creek's athletic teams participated in or had individual athletes that qualified for postseason there were league championships in boys tennis thank you boys golf and girls cross country one senior earned a state championship in wrestling many members of this class received all-league honors and six seniors earned all-state recognition in their respective sports amazingly more than 30 of you are planning to participate in athletics at the collegiate level those of you planning to participate in athletics would you please stand to be recognized congratulations thank you finally this group of young people have persevered and endured challenging life events such as a global pandemic always changing learning plans quarantines and not spending time with friends and loved ones over the last many months this group of students has missed out on many special

055one last hearty round of applause for the class of 2021. thank you class of 2021 guests and d20s staff standing here before you i can honestly honestly share with you that becoming a principal was my dream job how lucky am i to have had something that makes saying goodbye so hard after 31 years as an educator today i am retiring making a big transition just like you are thank you d20 for hiring me as a young 22 year old first year teacher all those years ago i taught for 16 years and met thousands of outstanding young people six years as an assistant principal and nine years as the principal at pine creek high school is how i spent the second half of my career d20 though was more than the place i worked i met
056my husband here raised my children they went to school in district 20 and watched them graduate from pine creek i grew up here had more opportunities than i can count just like you said gage worked with the most amazing people and created hundreds of long lasting relationships i want to thank my husband and my six children for supporting and loving me even when i was consumed with work in times that i should have not been thank you pine creek staff for working alongside me your support your kindness and your friendships students you are the reason that we all chose this profession quite simply you are the best class of 2021 this is the beginning for you and for me of anything we want to do this is an exciting day indeed best wishes to each
