001We'll now call our regular board meeting We'll start with our board member roll call. Mr. Gore? >> Here. >> Mr. Rickenbach? >> Here. >> Mr. Winston? >> Here. >> Mr. Winnerman? >> Here. >> Mr. Flayman? >> Here. >> And Mr. Richardson? We'll start with the Pledge of Allegiance. >> I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> First, we'll go over our contingency mission and vision. We strive for a learning environment that partners with the community to fully prepare lifelong learners to thrive in a complex world. Our mission is to engage students, families, staff, and community members as they provide accessible, relevant, and meaningful educational experiences. We'll start with our student recognition.
002All right. Yes, for those of you that have been recognized, I think you know who you are. You can come to the front, please. That would be great. All right. So, tonight we have the honor to recognize our class of 2026 salutatorians. Um it is our distinct honor to recognize and celebrate the exceptional achievements of our class of 2026 salutatorians. These students represent the pinnacle of academic excellence having demonstrated unwavering dedication and intellectual curiosity through their time in our schools. Their journey has been marked by countless hours of to mastery, and a resilient spirit that inspires us all. Beyond their impressive grade point averages, these individuals have enriched our halls as leaders, athletes, artists, and compassionate mentors to their peers. They have not navigated the complexities of a rigorous curriculum while contributing meaningfully to the
003vibrant fabric of the Astoria community. As a board, we take immense pride in knowing that our district has provided the foundation for such brilliant minds to flourish. We also wish to extend our deepest gratitude to the families, teachers, and staff who supported these scholars every step of the way. To our valedictorians, your success is a testament to your character and the great things you will undoubtedly achieve in the future. As you prepare to embark on your next chapters, we encourage you to carry the pride of being a fighting Fisherman with you wherever you go. We are confident that you will continue to lead with integrity and use your talents to make a positive impact on the world. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, and thank you for being such stellar representatives of the Astoria School District.
004So, the valedictorians that we have tonight are Rio Naranjo, Quinn Gore, and Zinnia Cook, Sophie Saraceno, Teresa Blackburn, Josie Reeves, and Finnegan Prior. Please join me in congratulating them. >> Hello. The one behind the board is that >> Um so recently at the high school we had our senior skip day planned. Um originally we were going to go to a theme park and then they did not have they did not do weekdays which is odd for a amusement park. Um then our second option was a place called Boomers like arcade games type of stuff. Uh that also uh they never got back to us. So now we are ended up uh going to uh Topgolf on Tuesday uh I believe the 26th or 27th. Um our final presentations for our senior project and paper just
005finished and I feel like everyone did well and there's a lot less stress than I expected for most students. Um we uh are having 20 30 class visits at the high school as well as um high schoolers Q&A at the middle school. With the new stomper as well as an assembly from the leadership class to the middle school later this May. Um there's a raft trip this weekend. Uh they go to Deschutes and then they camp I think Saturday Sunday or Friday Saturday Sunday depending on which group. Um They jazz band got fifth at O M V A and at Mount Hood Community College and they're going to uh participate in the OSAA state competition this Thursday in Salem. >> I have one addition. >> Okay. >> Sophia competed at state OSAA um a week
006ago. >> How'd she do? >> Um not as good as she wanted to. Took place about a week or so back. >> Thanks, Glenn. Uh item four is our consent agenda. >> I'll make a motion to approve the consent agenda. >> I'll second. >> All in favor? >> Aye. >> All opposed? >> Motion carried 5-0. Let's start with administrator reports. >> Tomorrow is kindergarten preview. >> It was a good time and you got to become a weird like a little stalker looking for 5-year-olds anywhere. Um so if you know 5-year-olds, tell them to come. It's free. It's Monday and breakfast is >> out the t-shirts and all the fun things. Um, so, we're doing that tomorrow. Um, my first grade just came back from the zoo. Um, and we're starting to sort kids for our
007next year and doing testing like everyone else is. What was I going to say but now I can't. They're ready going to do screening here soon. And, um, my staff is learning about dysgraphia, which is not related to dyslexia or dyscalculia. Um, and I'm I'm going down this rabbit hole learning about that. It's really interesting about how, um, all the things that you need in place in order to write. Um, we were studying that this week. It's actually There's a lot of a lot of things that you need. Um, and file out of them. Um, and motor skills and motor planning and all the things. So, um, that's what we're we're learning right now. So, we hope our third graders for that long because it's going to be good and that's what we did. >>
008Okay. Listen, probably feel like the April was a really busy month for us. Um, we decided to do our ELA and math state testing in one week and during that week we also interspersed fun things in there for the kids to kind of have a break and get to do something exciting. So, we had a fun planetarium um, assembly come to our school. We did the turkey trot but we didn't do it during uh, in uh, over Thanksgiving. Uh, we we did a spring sprints instead. So, they got their energy out running around the field. And then we had the Pizzazz dance team come and do a performance for us too. So, Um, we had an amazing uh, certified appreciation week. That was Teachers felt uh, appreciated and honored. I felt that so a week
009week for us. Our talent show is coming up tomorrow. So, uh, it's at the high school from 5:30 to 7:30 and that's always a a big thing for Roosevelt Park. So, that's happening tomorrow. Today, um the middle school team to talk to fifth graders, Evelyn and Brooke, helped us out like for about an hour. Straight, they asked questions and they were the staff was really patient and answered all the questions. So, um that happened today today and then in 2 weeks we're having the seventh graders to come up to visit our to see what their next year building and teachers and classrooms will look like. >> Okay, so we had um the track districts this last week at the middle school and we won't list everybody, but a big shout-out to all the people that
010volunteered to help, supported. It it went very very well. Um in my kind of a middle school, we have a track district as well. So, if no has ever happened, um it went great and we have four kids moving on to state. And that was, you know, a track meet with like 140 kids. So, fifth grade won the track meet. There you go. Um looking at head, this uh this year we are starting a science fair project for eighth graders. Um and that's going to be on the 22nd. Feel free to come, participate, check it out. It's kind of like the wax museum that we're doing since uh the wax museum is at the end of the month. You're also welcome to attend if you would like to. Um looking at head to not so
011fun, our SBAC for math and reading will be next week. We take the entire day, do a modified schedule, and plug in kind of those fun activities where kids are going to go and do different things between testing windows. So, that's going to be happening. Um the transition work is well in progress. We we've done additional trips for some of our students that receive special services to try to ease that transition, make it a little more personalized. Mr. Eddie is helping us with some um accommodations, and Candy's helping facilitate that. The visit to uh Wilson and Candy, we want to do a shout-out to that fifth-grade team. It was phenomenal. The kids were amazing. It was just They had great questions. I thought like they were so prepared. It was a It's exciting to think
012of what we're going to get them next year. Um Mr. Jackson and I have coordinated and are doing our transition. It's a three-week rotation where um we break the class into smaller groups. One group visits the high school, one's meeting with Mr. Madison and a student panel, and the other meeting with the counselors. Um That is going very well. It ends with the fish assembly and the invites to the summer program to our our eighth-graders went out last week. So, things happen. >> So, part of what I was going to mention has already been touched upon by Principal Brett. So, just looking forward, what we have coming in the upcoming weeks, three weeks from today is the last day of school for the class of 2026. Hopefully, they have better weather than today for their
013senior sunset, which takes place at sunset. Obviously, the opt times ask me, "When is it?" So, that will happen three weeks from today. But, also at 6:30 that day will be the faith-based celebration for the black baccalaureate. The following morning is the grad walk. So, if you are interested in participating in that, that would be wonderful. If you want to come by and take a look at those events, I would encourage you to if you only have limited time, go to Astor. Sorry, they have the most cuteness factor. So, I would go there. But, it is It is a and music. >> and music. >> Yes, it's quite the exciting thing. But we do end up walking down Commercial Street in route to the green theater for practice for the awards night. So if you
014don't want to stop by the school around 11:00 and 11:00 11:30, stopping by on Commercial Street would be a wonderful thing. We have the awards night later on that night at Story High School Scholarship Inc. has already allocated their funds and again they continue to be very generous to our upcoming graduates. And then finally commencement being at 4:00 that Saturday, June 6th. I do want to extend one more invitation particularly to those who feel like they need a redemption. On June 9th and 10th, we will be having our pancake feed again. So if there are individuals who would like to show up and help serve pancakes, that would be awesome. >> 9th and 10th. >> That's correct, Mr. Dean. >> I'll be there. >> So in our kindergarten ready kids program I asked her if
015they're wrapping up the year. It's the first year that Tammy Stellsy has been the the lead teacher. She's a phenomenal job. Super happy with how things have gone. She's had a big impact all year long. Some of the things they're thinking about doing, nothing is written in stone yet but they're they're looking at a potential field trip to go visit some of the things. spring unit about baby chicks and hatching and springtime all the way around. And also there's going to definitely be a end of the year celebration. That's something we've got in. Um Kindergarten ready kids since it's been established and we're we're sending a number of kids into kindergarten. into kindergarten or graduating 13 out of our program. It's pretty exciting. And um they will be going on to preschool which They know
016the staff, they know where the where the bathrooms are, and so it's good that way. Um and then just a quick overview cuz I like to talk about the caseload numbers. Um some some of the anticipated numbers we're looking at to start the school year with next year. And this is just in um resource rooms. This is not consortium, this is not speech, this is just the resource rooms. And Astor we're hovering around 16 students on average between the two classrooms. And Barker's hovering around 17 and three classrooms. Astor Middle School is um going to start at 25 on average, and then the high school with the three resource rooms um starting the year at 30. >> Okay. So uh the district was awarded the summer learning grant. Okay. So we have been holding meetings
017being a small group, but you know a lot of it is just recruiting and having a nice environment for the students. And for that I think it's going to be a nice new warm room like the other classroom, so I'm excited about that. And then next Tuesday we have our ELD meeting celebration at the middle school celebrating um our English um learners who um are graduating and we have a lot. Ooh. And I think only two of them are earned um diplomas, but the rest are ELs. I think the students I identified in the bulletin 21 graduating have earned diplomas. Five of which um have earned the Seal of Biliteracy, which is super exciting. And then we have 25 students who passed the ELPA test and are exiting EL services, so kudos to our language
018development teachers and our their assistants. They're doing amazing work, so please I just want to say at the middle school next week if you wanted to learn about them to be invited to the celebration, you're welcome to do so. >> So, uh we completed our administrative review through ODE. We had two minor findings. Um they've already been corrected. I mean the review's been closed. One of those was it um perennial local wellness policy assessment, which we've completed. Um it's posted on the district website like through the review underneath the food service page. Um And the new policy, I believe we're bringing next month. The updated policy we're bringing next month to the board. The summer food service program sites and the non-congregate sites, we have six of those that were approved um for the the
019next 5 years. And we finished the community eligibility provision incentive paperwork. Um And it was approved for a new 4-year cycle. That'll be all the way through 2030. And um both the summer food service and the CEP are on the agenda later. >> Well, transportation, it's been really busy keeping up with all of the principals and requests from the teachers and stuff. In the month of April, we did a little over 100 trips in total. Give a shout out to the trip drivers. We don't even have like four trip drivers. So, they've been really stepping up to the plate to make sure all those trips happen. Um those are columns are from I'm Tim Maloney and Emily Sugars uh classrooms and um we have to bring that It's coming back, but I would celebrate the
020column like everyone else, but um we kind of went went way into it. So, this one >> Very good. We will carry in the same fashion. I want to see the finance report. And April that the district entered into an agreement with Oregon Association of School Business Officials, which is in Alaska. And April our request for participating in a joint engine operation analysis. Last winter we had a presentation that um our pension fund was expiring and so they they have shown an interest with school districts. So they only um it's costing $2,500 to be a part of this group and then we can decide once we get an analysis whether we want to move forward or not. And this um agreement we will be a part of it through June of 2028. So it's not
021necessarily something that's going to happen right away. But it just depends on we'll be watching the market and they'll let us We are having our first informational meeting in in May June and I'll read you that Yes. May I ask a question? Probably won't have another meeting by then. So I don't have a lot of time. >> So they're not starting it right now. >> No, they're just doing an analysis. And and it's kind of they're starting the analysis of the market and school item. Honestly, I have no idea of the numbers that >> Cuz I remember them talking about like There was what would that be numbers you wanted the difference between, you know, like what >> Yes. >> And you know, to do it at other times is it not like seven >>
022So they're they're doing the first analysis and they said that potentially this I mean most likely this will just be a base on analysis. >> Okay. >> And then they'll do another one in June 27 and then another one in June 2028. But it also just depends on market movements. It'll be interesting. I wasn't here when they everyone when they did the first one. We also received our preliminary allocations from the federal title two previous which was exciting. Cuz last year we find out what they were ordered and something school allocations Um and they declined title one declined slightly but slightly. Um so we're actually very happy with the numbers that Hopefully we'll get that final allocation sometime in August. And Stephanie already told you that we received those some of our state That's it.
023Answer your questions. >> I didn't design a moment before. >> Yeah, so for the first one we were 1699 but our average for the year is 708 I think. 708 and we discussed that last week at the budget meeting that last year we estimated a budget of about 1690 kids so um that is a conservative which is a good sign better than being in the negative but that's correct. That's it. Slow drive everybody. Slow drive. >> Welcome to the public hearing for public comments and questions. Uh at this time I would like to invite any member of the audience that submitted a public comment to come and speak with comments on items of interest or concerns this evening. Persons were asked to submit public comment prior to the meeting. We will take comment in the
024order received. Please begin by stating your name and if you live in the school district, it would be appreciated if you would limit your comment to 3 minutes so that we can move the meeting in a timely fashion and that will be kind of allow others the opportunity to speak. We ask that you remember that the Oregon law prohibits us from discussing specific employees or their job performance. Thank you for your support of the school district. And we will start with Ms. Candy Morton. >> I'm Candy Morton and I live in Morton, Oregon at 36 Southwest 6th Street. And um I worked in this district for longer than Tyler has been alive. So And um tonight I just um wanted to talk about I just wanted to read a statement of clarification from the March
02511th um school board meeting. Um and first of all uh when I made my presentation, I was attempting to explain the loss of hours for 10-month classified employees. Um it wasn't 2 days off without pay um in November as relayed in the April school board meeting um as being dishonest um but it was actually six total unpaid days for the month um compounded by winter break and that 10-month classified employees uh only received 4 months full pay out of the 10 months they work. Um The gist of my presentation was to ask the board to consider their this information before casting their vote for the calendar. Um in reference, I'd also like to reference the National Day of Action on May 1st. It was organized by AEA um on their time with materials they purchased.
026The action was on schedule to happen before school and the signs read support public schools and education. Parents and students were invited. I just want to make a real simple um distinction between certified and classified unions um besides the obvious responsibilities and duties. The red shirts indicate AEA were certified teachers. The blue shirts would be representing OSCA classified. In saying that, um I want to say that we stand together in unity to educate and support students and staff of Astoria School District. The two unions work side-by-side every year contacting legislators pleading for a school budget that is sufficient and uh sustainable. We are all passionate about our roles in educating our future. Um thank you very much for your time. Thank you, Megan. Our next uh speaker is Jenna Shepherd. My name is Jenna Shepherd.
027I do live in the district. Um and I am a parent of a 2027 graduate as well as what will be a 2030 graduate of the school. And uh Pam would be here tonight, but he's down there playing a baseball game. So, he also kind of wanted to speak about this. Um I really think as we look at the graduation award changes, I would suggest that I would encourage the the school board to look at this proposal in parts. Because some of it has some really great things that are behind it. And I will be honest with you that I will probably lose the fight some of you in where my take is on this. Because when I first heard about it, I was hot. I was irate. Greg was on speed dial. I've talked
028to many of the board members. I've talked to many of the community members. I've talked to many of the parents of the kids that graduate from this. I want to start by saying I think it's pretty cool that we're getting to talk about the elite of the elite kids. And plug your ears those of you that were like called out for being graduates and valedictorians. But Izzy was right. This is the easiest thing most of these kids will ever achieve in their entire life. In the grand scheme of things, is it going to matter if they're a valedictorian or not a valedictorian? No. A child is a high achiever and he will go on to do great things regardless of what decision is made here. But I think there's a few things to call out.
029I was upset for a minute initially about the lowering of the threshold. And I think that's kind of the initial part of this proposal that I like and don't. Decreasing the threshold from the highest GPA to the 3.95 really felt like a slap in the face, especially to those class of 2027 grads who have worked very hard to maintain a 4.0. Have they gained the system? Potentially, yeah. My kid is one of those ones that did not take honors US history this year. Why? Because every class I had a bunch of us said, "That will bust your GPA. You will get a B in that class even if you're an elite student." There's a group of them that chose not to do that. Now, in the grand scheme of things, how is he going to
030turn out in life if he did not take honors US history as a junior? It's going to have a zero impact whatsoever, especially if you know his dad. History is not a problem in our house. But the great thing that happened is they had this year hunt. Probably the best educator in this district. And those kids that didn't take honors US history have compared to their buddies and learned more in the non-honors US history. So, I'm not worried about like the threshold. We need thresholds for all of the valedictorian stuff, but I did feel like lowering that criteria to 3.95 was kind of a watering down what is an elite expectation. The part of it that I'm a little more concerned about is the part regarding the college classes and how those college classes impact
031their awards when it comes to their GPA. And like you alluded to tonight, even looking at those eighth grade classes, those eighth graders have no idea that some of those classes they may be taking are impacting their graduation honors. So, I do want to speak a little bit more to that portion of it, um, and strongly urge the board to think about this portion and maybe even more immediately than you are thinking about for the 3.95 change in threshold. Um, we don't have a lot of control over the classes and the quality of the classes that are happening at Clark Community College. My student took a or my son took a class there in the winter term. No syllabus was given to the students whatsoever. You know, grades were given until the final term. They
032had verbal feedback from the instructors throughout, but no grades given until the very end. Kids had no idea really what they were doing. Um, and so, this is the reason that as a parent in a school district, we ultimately have very little oversight and control over the quality, the structure, and the instructional expectations of those classes. Um, I think we have to remember that these are 17 and 18-year-old students. They should be learning in an environment that's supportive and developmentally appropriate, while still benefiting from the guidance of parents, counselors, and high school educators. If this situation happened in Astoria School District, I would have been in Mr. Jackson's office and we could have had a conversation about the fact that where's the syllabus? Where are the expectations? But, because it was just a college class,
033parents are removed from that situation. I do understand that the issue becomes more complicated when students choose to complete actual high school graduation requirements through Clark at Quinsigamond And in those cases, if a student elects to fulfill a required graduation class through the college rather than at a high school, then I do believe those grades should continue to be included in graduation award calculations. But for elective and non-graduation requirement college class work, I believe those grades should be excluded from consideration of their high school graduation honors. I've taken a lot of time to speak with parents, students, staff members, administrators, school board members, and my perspective has evolved through this. I really understand that the reason that this proposal has been brought forward Does it change the historical meaning of valedictorian and traditional graduation honors?
034Yes, I believe that it does. And because of that, I'm not sure that obviously the meaning of distinctions do need to change. But ultimately, our responsibility is larger than preserving tradition. Our job is to help raise strong, capable, and resilient young adults who are prepared for life after school. That preparation includes not only academic success, but also protecting and supporting the students' mental and emotional well-being. >> All right, we'll move to item A just information. Moving on to item A in unfinished business. Item A is a policy GNC EDB GDB E's non-directory access. >> I just want to say that I agree with this amendment policy. The main part is it goes from 15 days in previous one to 21 days or at least I think it is. One year one training year. >> I'm
035just making sure that everybody got to speak. I thought I saw somebody raise their hand. >> And then the next one is the you know the virtual of the charter school enrollment that has nothing to do with our charter school but just new rules of the board of education thing and the last one is program exemption based on uh Roman versus Taylor requests for questions or exclusions or accommodations to be advised they want to be excused from program activities. So that's an action item. >> I'll move to approve the unfinished business. >> I'll second. >> All those in favor? >> Aye. >> Anybody opposed? Okay. We'll move on to item nine, new business. Approval of the 2025-2026 school board calendar. >> So just a couple things for this. These are all on the second Wednesday
036of the month except for November 10th is a Tuesday. And I think that's because the 11th is Veteran's Day. So we just moved it back a day um if that's okay. The other thing that it's not in here is we're we're not scheduled to have a meeting in July which is perfectly fine um but um we traditionally done some type of retreat or something so it doesn't have to be on here but something to think about we should probably discuss in June to get it so we get a calendar set so that people are really busy in the summer. So and then that um I'll put it on the agenda because we should talk about what that looks like. We bring somebody in maybe you guys do or you just want to try to do
037it yourselves or whatever that is. So put it on the June meeting. >> I make a motion to approve the school board calendar. >> I'll second. All those in favor? >> Aye. >> Anybody opposed? All right. We'll move on to item B, the 2026 bus purchase transportation. >> So, Rhonda and I are proposing the purchase of a bus that is actually on the lot. Which is the control. Um And so, we we could have it by July, as I understand from them. Over the winter. The only reason it's on the lot is because it doesn't have air conditioning. Um most of the districts are buying Um and I realize that the budget hasn't been approved. And so, I would not sign this proposal until Monday's meeting when the budget or you could demand a reduction.
038This is This is our proposal. Um and I am looking to finance it by bill selling years. Finance there's some implications, so I don't have exact Um And I don't have the exact financing options yet. >> I'll make a motion to approve the 2026 bus bus purchase. >> I'll second. All those in favor? >> Aye. >> Anybody opposed? All right. We'll move on to item C, the 2027-2030 food service community eligibility provision. >> So, the significance of this is that all district students participating in school breakfast and lunch is will increase over the next 4 years. >> All right, I'm going to go over these are data now. Um important changes that are proposed. >> I will move to approve the 2027-2030 food service community eligibility provision. >> I'll second. >> All those in favor?
039>> Aye. >> Any opposed? All right, we'll move on to item D, the 2026 summer feeding program approval. >> This is just kind of a formality to ask the state board to approve our We are having a summer feeding program at our site. And then it starts every Tuesday this week. >> I'll move to approve the 2026 summer feeding program. >> I'll second. >> All those in favor? >> Aye. >> Any opposed? All right, we'll move on to item E, the Lower Richland Virtual Charter Academy proposal. >> I'll move to approve the Lower Richland Virtual Charter Academy proposal. >> I'll second. >> All those in favor? >> Aye. >> Any opposed? All right, we'll move on to item F, the Lower Richland Yeah, the Lower Richland Virtual Charter Academy contract. >> I'll move to approve
040the Lower Richland Virtual Charter Academy contract. >> I'll second. >> All those in favor? >> Aye. >> Any opposed? And she said to A the whole board members authority and responsibilities. >> Yeah, so um you can look at G through on the next page. Those are all revised policies around uh either board members, which is all B, and then there's two at the bottom going to be about superintendent. So, this is new policy that came out by uh school board association. Um I'll just read the summary. There have been several changes to the Oregon public laws over the last few years. These include statutes from the Oregon legislature and rules from the Oregon Government Ethics Commission in 2016. The legislature passed House Bill 4177 but it was not going into effect on this detail by
041the governor. And the policies included in this update include language that matches the new laws. This is only the first reading, so you know, you guys can do whatever. >> Before I move on, was there another comment that was placed? >> Yes. >> Please come forward. >> F. >> All right, there's a form that you can fill out. would like to stand up and and introduce yourself and give your greetings. I believe that if the title requirements about a valedictorian were changed, that it would change the meaning of being valedictorian. And not for the many students as well as just like me who have been working for many years towards this goal. Ever since I was 5, I've wanted to be a valedictorian. I believe that the successful adulthood often depends on grades and determination,
042which is what a student needs to achieve to achieve the valedictorian title. My father and mother both wanted me to get my 4.0 GPA throughout high school and to go to a four-year uh college and get a graduate degree. My mother and pretty much her entire family were educators or worked in a school. So, I I grew up with knowledge of being I I didn't think about being valedictorian. Um My brother was one of the valedictorians of the graduating class of 2025. Um His valedictorian speech inspired me to push even harder to become valedictorian. I remember that it was a very genius speech. express Um his speech was not just a farewell or commencement speech. It was a call to action. He asked the students to help cause that was personal to him, and I
043would like to follow in his footsteps and serve my high school graduation so I can motivate others. I was talking to him also and and he said that having balance for him on his resume where he had a dog in office of the vice president for the Virgin Islands and patients himself. And that his employers actually mentioned it. I also feel that if you change the requirements and the title from balance to now, I would make many people feel that they're being lied to. Um and I feel like it's unfair on both parties. Make the business fair. Okay. The goal of that one probably joining is especially Mary Harville to achieve my best in the achieve program. The program As a woman, being balance for him is is one of the few ways that you
044compete with my peers. I know that competition is one of the things that we're trying to avoid, but it's one of the reasons my peers are all for the success of honor and the program. Okay. I was in honors with Gloria and Michelle and Selena Gomez. In 1999, we were actually delivered and they went on to achieve very great So, moving on, I think that while I think that inducing stress and competition in toxic learning environments is important. I think that it's unfair to implement the changes to the criteria requirements of the table. The students who have already worked about a 4.0 or 4.0 GPA and take the required honors and college classes I feel like it probably said about the stopping. It would be changing the rules of the game while being still in
045the game. This is a sentence. I didn't agree with Lauren. I would feel wrong by a certain thing in my heart. I think that the incoming freshman should if things they get voted decided on by the board, I feel that the incoming freshman should also have a say because they face their future, too. I feel like this in general isn't just high school business. It has a direct impact. People I feel tend to look down on high school experiences because like it's just a high school like it doesn't matter in the long run. But I feel as though high school it's going to have an impact in a lot of your future and how you feel about the world and your interactions. We appreciate your time and your appearance at the meeting. >> Is this
046your group? >> Yes. >> This is Wintersteen. You want to introduce her? You want Mr. Jackson to introduce her? Or do you guys want to introduce her? This is Wintersteen. >> I got this. >> Where would you like to sit? >> Right here. >> So, I do want to recognize the efforts that Ms. Wintersteen has put forth not only in the application process. She fulfilled the application requirements as as as the interview of these two Klein board members who ran her through a series of questions, but also just simply tonight being here. She is also a Regatta Princess, and so tonight she was working with that board, practicing those speeches, and then maybe transition over to this meeting tonight so that she could watch her Klein board in action and understand a little bit more
047fully her responsibilities will entail for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year. >> Are there any other points or instances you would like to highlight at this time? >> Do you have any questions for us? >> Um at this time, since we're uh bringing up our students, we also want to take a moment to uh thank Klein board for being and completing this year's uh school rep and being a board of the board. It's been uh great fun and an honor to have you with us. So, that being said, >> Other? >> And I I just really appreciated Klein's input and him bringing ideas and information to us. I I feel like it really has informed our board this year and um and that's been a nice change to this role and and getting the students input
048and you it was evident that you put a lot of work into um getting the student voices and opinions. So, I really appreciate that and taking the effort to do that. That's it. >> And it's not the best way to spend your one month Wednesday, but we really have taken your feedback to heart and so thank you. >> Okay, so we will move on to comments for the good of the order. All right, this is the superintendent. >> I appreciate the superintendent being here and that's all I got for now. I'm very long-winded. >> Okay. I just wanted to say thank you and enjoyed seeing you. A lot. Thank you. >> Um I've had a thought for a bit now regarding um capping down for seniors at the high school as they're expensive and hard
049to purchase for some families. Um and sports at Astoria High School, those are free. It's extracurriculars and since capping down are forced to be worn to most of the graduating events and graduation, I feel that it would be important to start to look into a way to fund for these as they are required to graduate. Um yeah, that's what I got. >> Is it still you have to return them still? No. >> They are yours to keep, so you can wear them whenever you wish. >> As I was saying, I do think we should have a um a return for those that wanted to return them. >> That's what I thought some community college as I've been doing my graduation process. They have I think they call it a graduation closet or whatever, but people
050who purchase their gown are able to donate it, and the next graduating class is free of charge from that clothing expense. >> That was implemented last year. Last year's senior project. But obviously we could advertise that more broadly. Um the challenge is it's not the first thing on the students' mind after that ceremony. But getting that in order, again as I stated as a senior project last year, we did receive about 20 donations. And we have about 10 to 15 on any given year that are donated by Jostens. So that does provide in this particular cohort of 25, but we could certainly broaden that. >> Um just for that I bought one and the cheapest one is 60 bucks. So Well, you have to buy two classes. >> Okay. >> I talked to Mr. Jackson
051about buying them, just buying them, and then charging like a I'm not going to pay any cleaning fee, but we're turning them in dry cleaned. We have a place to put them. They have to be provided by the campus. We're taking two minutes here. >> Um just appreciate everybody and all the comments about graduation requirements and all all of this and giving us a well-rounded view and things to think about and the students for coming especially and speaking and sharing from their perspective and um valedictorians this year for the work that they put in and um yeah, um everything's it's exciting to see things wrapping up and all the good job on the artwork and I don't have anything else. I'm really super excited about the virtual charter school. So, really excited to see that
052rolling forward. I think it will be great for the district. >> Mr. Jackson, I will definitely be at the pancake feed. >> I'm standing up. >> I'll be bringing my own spatula. I think that was the problem. >> Yeah. >> Uh Good chief. >> I don't think I have >> spatula for you. >> Uh >> Got to hear a lot of different perspectives today. So, again, I just want to say, Mr. Jackson, I appreciate all the diligence you put into this graduation honors. I'll be going to support moving forward. So, right now, I do look forward to working with you in the future to make it a better process. Um, I got to watch some of your projects or your senior presentations. Um, that was fantastic. I got to interview four students and someone's son.
053They all did a great job. Um, and then, what was the other miss winner's name? She um, was fantastic in her her interview. She's very She's very impressive. So, I look forward to working with her and Thank you, Quinn. I really had a great time with you. Thank you. That's all I got. >> Does anybody have anything to add? >> I'll say thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you to all the speakers. Um and I also um, am very excited about the charter board. I think it's our the charter school is going to be a good thing. Um I also attended uh some senior presentations and those were really interesting and I plan to go to the um, alternative schools presentations too. So, um, I look forward to that. When are those at? >>
054Uh >> And spring break will be Thursday and Friday. >> Thank you. >> Yeah. 2:30 at the latest. >> I think Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. >> And And also thank you, Quinn. Um, yeah. That's it. It's not there. Yeah, I will re-reiterate I appreciate people coming and speaking always when I come to board meetings cuz I know that they can be long and boring and we appreciate that you're showing up. People don't always do that. Good thing. So, appreciate that. Um I appreciate the student voice. I appreciate the efforts of our administrators and team as well. Um, and looking out for the um, best interests of our students. Um, I will also say thank you to Quinn cuz this is a capacity that I don't get to see Quinn very often and um I'm I'm not
055like I'm not an emotional person, but this is very um This is a very trying time for me right now and I My thoughts are like really adding up. So, um, but I really appreciate your time on the board. Um I'm going to give Quinn a piece of advice, which is eat dinner before you come. It's very long and somebody needs to feed Quinn soon cuz it's getting long. Anyway, appreciate all all of your um, your time devoted to this and to bringing bringing um, your leadership to the student body here. So, thank you. >> I everybody agrees with everything. So, I agree. Thank you, Quinn. Welcome to the Warner scene. I said it as a middle schooler too and I was well. Um, I do want to say that uh prom was amazing. Just
056talk in a little bit. Might have been my way up there, but I will. >> I don't know if I were ever going to top that off is all I have to say. That is class like if you guys were there like you got to chat with me after like I don't know what else we would do to top that off. It was amazing. I could have stayed there and danced but Mr. Jackson didn't let me. >> Did you not get your guest time? >> My what? >> Did you get your guest time? >> Oh. >> No. >> I got to go get my purse. >> Um it's okay. Yeah, that was great, wonderful, and thank you to all the students who are speaking up and saying all the homies you need to go to
057the police station. Thank you. It's always nice to have you all here and remember that your voice is important and that's why we're here and we want to hear it so sometimes you may be a little nervous to come or whatever but you know what you have to speak up we will. This is what we make affect you guys. So it's nice to hear from you so thank you and thank you for everybody for being here tonight. Who do you vote Okay. Is it possible to change my vote? Is that I think you I believe you could do an amended motion. >> Make a new motion? >> Can I make an amended motion to investigate?
