cheers please rise the united states of america and to the republic for which he stands one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice thank you everyone for being here we're going to be conducting our may board meeting and we did receive two comments for audience comments and as always we've mentioned that that's a five-minute duration and so let's go on to 1.5 for the asba report [Music] um [Music] the girls volleyball team teaches the boys to play and then the boys compete against each other and then power club is when the boys football team teaches the girls to play fly football and high five we have the red cross blood drive um the washington county job affair which is where individuals were looking for jobs for themselves we had the rob frank invitational track

meet which went really well um on april 16th the robotics team was the first ever home competition um the golf team won districts something [Music] elections and so the upcoming asc president for next year is chapter first look forward to that next year and then everything is just a little [Music] less busy [Music] any questions comments or concerns thank you okay we'll move to 1.6 uh do i have a motion to approve the agenda i'll move to improve the agenda all in favor [Music] we want to 2.0 for the presentation uh it's 300 bucks all right so it's high school okay we'll have a high school robotics so all right um do you want to move over here yeah you thanks all right so hello we are on the main robotics team my name is

trevor i've learned a lot about 3d modeling through the banks robotics club here my name is i'm learning just a bunch about building engineering modeling my name is ireland i've learned a lot about programming this year and also putting together an engineering notebook which is basically a log of all the stuff we've done [Music] so fbc which is the programming participant requires a variety of skills that go far beyond building and programming a robot which is what people normally think of but we also put together engineering their books that requires not only skills in communication and just cataloging everything we've done but also graphic design um making sure all of our information is in there um we also uh do a lot of like we do fundraising so we've had to finance our buying parts

and stuff which can definitely be very expensive um we do fundraising through we get sponsors so back up our sweatshirts we have our sponsors we also do like marketing trying to um bring ftc to our wider community um but again there are also of course the skills we've learned from 3d modeling which you can see most of our robots model this year we have our archimedes screw in the center which is entirely custom 3d printed we do a lot of engineering mathematics strategizing you have to really cooperate with other teams so we do gracious professionalism which is which is an fdc term that basically means you're you're competing with the other teams but you're also all trying to advance each other's learning experience and for a general overview of what our robot does a program

here is called ftc your first tech challenge and then each year today's season is released and each season follows a real life so you and your team try to create a robot that solves that problem and this season the problem is basically to set up a warehouse environment and the goal is to score as much little cubes as possible given in time there are also additional basis [Music] yeah before we get to our robot banks has been very successful this year um this season with uh how we've advanced we've gotten a lot of awards we started out at a 12 team competition one of our teams was the highest ranked team of that 12 team competition which then merged into a 2014 competition we were part of the finalists or the winning alliance 4239 our

sister team did that and they also got the design award we 1173 won the innovative award which advanced both of us to state where there was 40 teams and our 40 teams were in the finalists alliance um as well as we won the think award which is the second highest ranked award uh most second most prestigious award and it moved us from uh we were the fifth highest we were the fifth team to advance our 40 team competition which left us just two uh and would take two seas away from the invite so we're very excited about that we're extremely grateful for all of our sponsors and everyone who supports us but i think that we're probably most thankful for this year is having our own private space working we can keep everything like our

robots and our gadgets and stuff in a safe secure space as well as providing a quiet nice work environment to be very productive and be in there almost every day this year our robot has three main things i'd like to cover today so we're starting off [Music] so [Music] which which takes this device [Music] set it down [Music] anything that goes on in our programs we're happy to answer questions um this is our robot scrappy that's the first program uh so yeah [Music] they said that they this is the first year but just to give you an idea the team that took second place at our state tournament was on this on the finalists winning alliance at worlds so the student the teams that we compete against we compete we compete against six to eight

teams five day teams four teams private teams that's it's really cool [Music] now we have kristen mccarty with our middle school robotics team let me share my screen here [Music] but it's the same program that the high school people do first and so having a team at the middle school we're actually one of the huge school sponsored activities that we have at the middle school right now and it's really important for setting these kids up actually for going to high school it's kind of like a pipeline in the high school so it's nice to have them there um our first team was in 2019 and you can see a picture of our team here there's co-coaches ronnie king and dan williams and so they helped us get to know jim carson he was our our

school sponsor then this was our team this year um we had a high school kid and um david walmart and a high school kid with sam who helped us out we're co-coaches and um and that was our team we our program is a little bit different than our high school it's constrained a lot um we have really cool parts to the program um there's a robot design which must be done entirely out of lego pieces and it's out of the kit that they gave us that has a certain number of motors but they don't have as much um flexibility to 3d design and everything but that's totally fine for the school kids so they have to design a robot they also have to do a little course with some obstacles and things missions that they

call them efficiency they also have to do what's called an innovation project and so as for the first program is really project project-based learning and so what they do is they release a sort of a very broad statement in the beginning that gives you a problem area to research but the kids really drive what they want to go out and explore as far as their innovation project and their innovation project doesn't have to have anything to do with robotics it's really just a totally wrong research project and for these kids a lot of them it's like the biggest thing they've ever tried to do so they they learn a lot of really important things that apply to everything that they're going to do through their school career and it's all being driven by these these

core values which are the most important thing and it's basically a set of things that we try to teach them about how to work on projects like you know how to work a team how to understand that the point is discovering things instead of being told the answer so how to teach them how to think outside of being given a problem that has a very defined statement and instead learn how to define the problem yourself and also how to do um the teamwork in in an inclusive way sorry so this was our team this year trying legos um for the next one trying to build a robot we've been researching the project um we met the cafeteria like the high school team one of our biggest challenges is really space for ourselves and we're hoping

next year to be able to actually um move in with the high school kids if they get to keep their space [Music] but also because we'll be connected to the high school team more the high school kids could really use the opportunity to have some kids to mentor so it would be good for them but it would also be great for the middle east middle school kids to be exposed to sort of more of their peers to teach them that way so i think you could be a really big win if you can do that but this year we were in the cafeteria which was a little which was nice but still a little open and nuts at times especially when we were in competition with the dance team for the space we go to

the next best way um so part of the project work we usually do field trips so we uh this was in 2019 we went to the fire station because the kids project was about building fire shelters so we went down to the bank's fire station and we showed off our project to the fire station that that year so that was really fun and this year our project was like like they mentioned in the high school presentation they give you a big theme and the theme for the year was about cargo and how we connect cargo from the supplier all the way down to the end customer and so the kids this year as they were exploring you know where would they like to take this they decided that they wanted to focus on porch piracy

so we had a law enforcement officer come in and talk to the kids about some of the problems around that and then they designed us a solution to how they were going to solve this but they had a um because we tried to teach them to think outside their own personal experience they decided that they wanted to design a solution that was inclusive for disabled people so their project was around because they felt that you know your package sitting on the porch would stay there longer if you couldn't easily get out the door to get to it so this is their little video our tournament was virtual this year so we recorded [Music] to get an idea they made the video themselves they write it all i don't do anything except narrating them about how

much time they have left so they're pretending to steal they're supposed to be on though i'm sorry mr pets the um problem statement was that a disabled person could get to their package in time and someone even stole it and then they animate themselves they write their own scripts they decide how [Music] so do you want to skip to the next video okay so the other this is their robot part of their presentation so since we were virtually recorded the runs and they basically have a 4x8 mat with a bunch of lego pieces on it and this is their robot and they there's about i don't know maybe 16 missions and each one of these little lego pieces is a challenge that they have to try that they can't choose to do or not they

don't have to do all of them and um but each one has some like little mechanism that they have to activate in some way or they have to you know drive past something and lift something or drop it or whatever so the kids um at the middle school they they attempted three missions out of 16. so this is their recording of their their video the little robot it can um it can have sensors on it that help it navigate but the kids chose not to use the sensors this year again like i said they don't make them do anything they decide how how where they want to take their robot work so they are just sort of pointing and driving but they but the robot is programmed and so they can learn about programming as

well as some of the design elements like the first robot that we did they didn't realize that it needed to turn so they learned that pretty quick when we got to the test stage so we're funded um only by donations and also by the volunteer time that gets matched through my my company so we don't charge the kids at all for this and we hope to be able to keep it free we just ask the parents who can um donate and consider making a donation and then if you work at a company that will match your volunteer timing then try to get you in and we get that money that way that jones has been here marketing for us over here so the first we also apply for grants every year so we get a

grant every year that funds our ability to participate at the tournaments i watched okay uh i just want to move on to 3.0 audience comments too [Music] and here probably a bit like broken wheel but um after reviewing the website some more and trying to seek out the chain of how things come about in the school i still come to this place where it seems that the public and voters in the district really define what's supposed to happen at the school in terms of policies procedures and activities and we do that through electing school board members that represent us as a well over 5 000 people that vote in this district so if that's the case once again i'm wondering why when we have a board meeting and people like myself come up and speak

and have questions i realize they can't be answered at this meeting and often it requires time to even come up with the answer for us but what i'm finding is that we are in violation of the statute of having our minutes of the meetings posted it should be within the 30-day period i would think and you would think that there would be a q a section of that minutes that shows what questions were asked by the public and what the board response is and if they don't have time to give this woman that 30 days then there should be some explanation whether it's been assigned a committee more research or yes or no you know whatever it takes so i'm asking to get the website up to speed to reflect what our statute requires youtube

is not out of the documentation of the school board meeting it can be altered it can be lost and if i want to find the q a part of the meeting to see if my question was answered i don't want to have to watch whole youtube to get there and for 5 000 people in district there's a lot of people like myself that are not youtubies you know we don't do that i'd rather find it on the website and see other things you want to show me on the website like great awards and things like this it's good for all of us that don't have kids here anymore to know what's great about this school and we don't hear it enough because we don't have a system to communicate with all 5 000 people and

we really need that so i'm asking you it's going to cost some money our group our parent group that we're starting want to help reach out and get emails or however we can reach everybody in our district so that's one thing i want to bring up the second thing is parents need to know before the end of school where their kids are going to go next year and there's several burning questions whether or not children will come back here one is are you going to have mandated vaccines for volunteers coaches parents coming to school and the children i as a citizen of the voter here in this district do not want that mandate in this school and i think there's lots of other people who can like me and it's not up to the oregon

department of education to tell us what to do in our community in our school it's up to the board and the people here that vote the other thing is parents need to know whether or not biological boys are going to be allowed in google sports in this school district and are they going to be in the girls locker rooms i had a daughter going here i would not want that to be the case my daughter is a girl and needs to be competing with girls and thirdly um [Music] i want to know um about these uh young adult books in our libraries all the districts in oregon would receive boxes that then they're told to put them in the libraries and on and on we're getting more and more ideas about what these books involve

and i'm asking for a parent staff combination committee that comes together and reviews all these books in all three buildings so that we as parents know what is on the shelves that the kids can see and it is alarming it may not be here yet but i'm going to give these handouts and i want you to just see what's come up recently um [Music] thank you [Music] these are from everybody um with that we want to say thank you to the school board and to all the fafsa like tremendously we understand that these last few years two years have been extremely hard unconventional times when people keep saying that we love to sing um i have three kids in the school district one at the middle school tulip at the elementary so that's why i'm

over here but also my main thing is i'm a school bus truck i love my job we are a part of you guys as a parent i have been following the school board meetings all year last month i got to me it got to me you guys all sat up here and thanked all of our staff everybody but without these bus drivers these kids wouldn't be getting to school okay we are the first people that they see in the morning and the last people they see we have relationships with these students just as much as the teachers and every administrator does in this district during coven we transported students to and from flippy we also delivered lunches to kids who couldn't make it to the school to get the free lunches that helped families tremendously

i know it helped my family as well um we helped out with this summer program the summer school which also i did field trips we this year our kids are thrilled we are doing monthly coloring contest pages they are eager to get that coloring page and turn that in to see if they won the winner gets a price out of all the buses um once the sports started back up i don't know if you guys know this the bank's location blew three states of midco services out of the water we did the most sports field trips as you can tell how well we're kicking butt everywhere else um we like i said before we love building a relationship with our students and in our community um when you guys are thanking the schools in the

administration please don't forget about us we're not a small piece in this district and we don't like feeling that way well that has picked major beep when it comes to snow days she is up butt crack a day drinking coffee and does not take a nap she gets up and does it again okay so and also with that we have also made last minute accommodations to field trips i know personally myself i went on a field trip last week for the sixth grade when they went to i think i was at their outdoor field trip sixth grade also had a track meet that same time the day before we got a phone call asking if that bus driver can leave an hour early to go pick up those sixth graders to get them to the

track meet before picking up everybody else last minute we also have our lives too but we love our students so much we go beyond backwards and we will do that every day please don't forget about us [Applause] we want to concentrate grab motion [Music] make a motion to accept a consent agenda thank you [Music] no action items you text me in the morning at 4 15 and sometimes you wait till 4 45 so i can sleep that extra hour we do appreciate that and there is a lot of stuff going on and that does knock it out of the park along with this bus driver so and thank you for the items and um you know next year when there's a snow day you can text me and text me at 4 15 one time

just for fun so thank you okay we'll move on to uh our program that's well done um i thank you for the comments tonight in both cases i do really appreciate the school bus buyers i know i dedicated you are to your jobs i appreciate it very much i i think maybe in my unthinkingly i kind of clustered them with staff and you said thank you but i think uh today um well to go back to last month where we said thank you to our staff thank you so much to our bus drivers our custodians um our cafeteria workers right our teachers our admin uh you know our librarians all of i i i feel deeply saddened by the fact that you felt overlooked and that i understand exactly why i came across that way

so please understand we more than appreciate everything you do so thank you so much and thank you for for coming and sharing that because that probably wasn't very fun to have to do so i appreciate your your courage on that um and yes thank you so much um thank you to just our amazing district here we're doing great things i'm really excited about our superintendent search um we have some wonderful people that we get to look at um and um our robotics team so i think are gone but thank you kristen and thank you to our amazing um high school presenters that was really awesome to see um just to know how incredible they're doing um with limited resources and and just excelling and all that so really wonderful to see that thank you chris

yeah um again we we can't thank everybody enough really it really takes a village to make sure that our kids are educated and i really appreciate you coming and sharing today um the robotics team uh i mean that is a cool robot um yeah i actually when sid was first starting out i helped him because my kids were in that and i really appreciate like how much time it takes to put that together and just like the rebuilding constant rebuilding and reprogramming um and to see them do that well it just blows my mind it's so stunning um i just want to give a shout out to the to the high school girls and boys golf team they both won or uh the boys won regionals and are going to stay the girls are going

to stay too they did really well at regionals and you know we didn't we didn't have them funded last year so i think this is the first year that they've actually been funded as a school sport so i'm really really proud of that and really proud of the way that they've kind of come together in totally well so and thank you for your comments tonight i'm looking forward to the next step in this process well i really love reading our board report thank you so much it really keeps us abreast of what's going on in each one of our schools and um yes little beth when we say staff we meet everybody and you know what my job was i told about you know i think my next job would be riding the bus with

kids that need a little extra but anyway and then we had a science fair competition and um gosh it just goes on and on of all the wonderful things that that have been going on in our in our district and i appreciate so much and we're just going to have a blink of the eye and there we are summertime get to have a take a deep breath and i was really glad that our sixth graders got to go outside and to do their field study oh golly we have oregon we should be outside learning but anyway thank you so much thank you guys for coming i appreciate it so much presentations tonight on robotics my daughter happens to be down at oregon state and the first thing that we noticed when we dropped her off

were all these robots white six-wheeled robots roaming the entire campus and stopping that sidewalks stopping before they crossed the street we were like what the heck is going on and uh come spring you know we've figured that out they're bringing food to everybody in dorms apartments they're just running around with food it's food delivery all of rosanne's programs i mean it's absolutely phenomenal and so what you guys are doing is it's applicable uh it's the next phase i think that we're gonna see in cities so congratulations to that um i wanted to let people know um we talked about how proud we are of our school district how many things we uh take pride in what this what we see our students are doing the staff everybody that is involved with making our schools work

as i mentioned we were in the second half of our superintendent search typically that time frame we had a tight time frame in which to get the applications out we received 31 31 applicants from 10 different states nine of which had doctorate degrees in education when i thought and i was going through all that it we went out on that open market in the way from my perspective and this is the response that we found and it reinforced everything that i believe that our district has our capabilities as we go forward i want to thank our administration for putting us here our staff our bus drivers our community our volunteers everything that we do that we believe in is evident and the applications that we receive so i hope everyone takes pride in that it

was amazing osba thank you so much for your outreach and getting that taken care of so as we go forward in this next step i just want everybody to take a step back look at the response that we've got and we can continue to raise bar so with that i'd like to thank everybody for coming we're going to go ahead and end the school board meeting we will now proceed into executive session so those people that are not on that school board superintendent search i can ask you to please leave get started
