Good evening everybody. Thank you for your patience. Um robust discussion in our executive session. Um we are going to call the meeting to order and the first item of business is our student representative report from down there. Welcome everybody. >> Good afternoon board. My name is Lincoln. I'm a senior and school's been doing really well. Chad prom this last weekend. It was a big hit. Alex had a lot of fun dancing. Um it was a big hit from students. I have to decorate for the past three years. That event this year was the best decoration we've ever seen by far. Our theme with night in the bayou. It was a big hit. And then nothing much has been happening. Things are kind of winding down. I had my senior presentation today. It went well. I

know some other students have been doing that as well. And then we've got graduation coming up on June 6th and I invite all you guys to show up. I think it's at 11:00 if you're on, but it's sometime in the morning. >> We're excited about the morning graduation. >> I think I was kind of stern last time. >> Sorry, we're just talking about happy we're not going to roast this year at graduation. >> My name is Santos and last week we had our spirit week. Um Monday was March Monday which is uh a new trend day like a formative day. Uh Tuesday was to Tuesday wearing sandals or open a toad shoes. Wednesday was Adam Sadler day. Thursday was move day like in during co times of fancy top and kama pants. And then Friday

was day. Um, next week we have a yard sale held by Aaron who's um in our leadership class. He put this on and it all proceeds are going to be going to our sparrow. >> Um, there's going to be people selling things, local small businesses and food of course at PHS um on May 14th and leadership is selling snow cones for $2 during lunch on Fridays at school. Hi, it's Emily. Um, we just had our dance off. So, all the classes prepare like dances and they're trying to beat it. And, um, the sophomores got first and the senior s got second, which is kind of sad cuz they usually win. >> And then, um, May 9th is our battle of the bands and it's, um, from 2 to 5 in downtown Phoenix. Um, we don't

get a lot of support for the band. So, I want to try to get more people going because we get more support on sports and they do a lot too. >> Um, and then link crew is coming back where um older classmen will go and um advise uh freshman and help them get through the school on how things work. And it will not be a class which I think is going to be kind of nice is that um makes it easier for people to do it. they don't take up their um class docket. Um it'll be through advisory instead and um Miss Campbell and Miss Donnelly will be >> there's something new coming. >> All right. Well, thank you. What was what was your favorite spirit thing? Yeah, >> I had hold on. I had

a really important question about your favorite spirit thing. Um, I think it was toes out tasting. I think I saw one page without shoes at all and that terrified me that had to go to the bathroom, >> but it was really funny. >> We definitely had a lot of participants for Toes Out Tuesday, but my personal favorite was Zoom Day. >> Yeah, I love the performance day. I wasn't there for all of it, but my favorite was probably the Toad Tuesday. That was pretty fun. >> Awesome. >> Sorry. Okay. Now it's >> for the band. There's a parade. Do you know what time the parades or where it starts and where it goes? >> Um it's from 2:00 to 5:00. It'll be like in front of the food in Phoenix >> is where they're starting

at. Okay. >> Awesome. Thank you so much. Okay. Uh time for accentuate positive. >> I'm here. >> Good to see you. >> Let's accentuate the fact that I'm not dead. confusing court and I love the proud principal here at elementary. Uh >> I don't know if you guys noticed but it's teacher appreciation week. It's just >> even though it is May and it's crazy out there. Teacher appreciation week is like the best week I swear because just it's a positive energy. um people come together to really just take pause and and share their gratitude with our our teachers who do some amazing things every day especially in May they're holding you together. So it's just been really fun and I just want to extend my gratitude to all of our teachers across the district and

and literally the country right now. So I'll say teachers are superheroes. Speaking of teachers, they're navigating uh testing pooa because it's the spring. Um, so it's a nice time to really appreciate all they're doing when they're carrying the load and trying to help students understand the importance of these fake assessments. Um, I've got some positive news on that front, too. Uh, preliminary data is looking really nice at talent for uh the smarter balance uh language arts test. We're looking like a 10% increase over last year. If that holds true, I'm going to do a victory dance. >> Um, >> or kiss a pig. >> Huh? >> Or kiss a pig. That's also coming up too. Um I'll share about that in just a minute. Um last week we had our annual Dia Delino celebration that

you know we collaborate the PTA helped sponsor the food for that and it was a huge success per usual. It's one of our favorite events of the year. Tons of people come and it's just I like living it through new famil family's eyes who are new to our district or who have kindergarteners and you're like wow it is pretty remarkable to like see community come together and just celebrate childhood and what it means to be a kid and have fun things like balloon animals. Nancy said make balloon animals. He go he's been doing that for years. Um, another key fun new highlight this year is our PTA hosted a spot. Bring a huge toy right for another one, right? Um, and then we also have a sparrow here. Uh, and your back. >> Yeah. So,

we're working to help support him, but talent PD challenged the kids for service hours and said offer to apply the police contest. That was a hit for everybody watching them get pied. Um, and job is coming up next week, next Friday. And, uh, this year we have students submit suggestions for what I have to do. >> And the list is wild. It's crazy. You're like, "Wow." Um, so now they're voting on what I will do at the different uh, funding thresholds. Um, so I just want to thank RBTA and Mr. uh, Parson who is organizing that and we'll see what happens. Um, and then last but not least, uh, Shauna, Erin and I are heading up to Ho Burough next week to attend the organ attendance conference or part of that cohort forever. But Shannon

and I get to share a little bit more about our family engagement and how that interfaces with our workflow. I want to echo all of what Heather just said about it being teacher appreciation week. It just feels really good and like it's a soul filler for everybody when you recognize the hard work that all of us professionals are doing. So, it's a celebration for us all but to be able to honor our teachers. Want to say thank you for to Tiffany for providing the luau because now we have a theme for our teacher appreciation week which is all island theme. We repurposed all of our decorations. If you come into Phoenix Elementary, it is it feels like paradise. So, um, but all that to say, thank you to the teachers. They're doing an incredible work.

Last Wednesday, aka yesterday. Um, we had our final leadership. >> That's what it feels like. >> Um, we had our final leadership team meetings for the year. And I just want to recognize our team leads. We have Erica Kazerati is a team lead. Jennifer Hawkins, Amy Hartley, Krie Baker, Jamar Boyd, Karen Calhoun, Javier Del Rio. We're doing some amazing school level work and district level work that's really pushing us forward and helping us get the gains that we're making. Like Heather, we have some preliminary data that we're also seeing about a 10% increase in ELA results, which is huge for BES. and we're really just proud of all of our work and proud of our students for for doing the work themselves to actually to learn and grow. So, it feels really positive. So, I

just want to recognize all those team leads because all of these teams are making great efforts and helping us be the great schools that we are. Finally, I want to say that running is the theme at PES right now. So, thanks to Brian McKinnis. We started a new tradition that the other schools have been doing in the monthly mile last Friday. It was awesome to get our whole school out running a mile together. We are doing our jogathon tomorrow. Then we have the upcoming track meet and field day. A lot of things celebrating running and just a big shout out to Brian for his help in in spurring us along in that way. So that's it from the Pirates. >> Can I ask a quick clarifying question? >> We're talking about 10 points a 10

point increase which is huge. >> So we probably like 33%. >> Yeah. Yeah, I think that's important to name because >> that's big. >> Yeah, thank you. >> Yeah, in 10 minutes any they're up. So, cross your fingers. We're doing that this week. So, >> awesome. >> Good evening everyone. Pen Hill, principal at Orchard Hill. Uh, obviously teacher appreciation week. >> Sorry, I got a little frog up my throat here, but I want to start out by saying our teachers are currently at the foodie. Uh, RPT is hosting an event to celebrate their accomplishments and they also have stuff going all week. But when I think about teacher appreciation week, I think about what what do they what do they uniquely do that we're appreciating? And what we have a bunch of staff up at

uh C or Gardens Pacific >> Pacifica Gardens uh they left yesterday. they'll come back tomorrow and spending every 24-hour and every day I day with 40 students is a lot. Um, so any of us that have been there know what that's like, but uh, you know, those things do impact our staff and their their lives outside of their profession. U, but they do it with a smile on their face and kids really enjoy that. So I I want to thank Nina Berto, Magnoly Inglehart, Ashley Sims, Whit Engle France, Marissa Sprag, Josie Tiss, and Alda Esparza for their dedication to helping kids uh have that experience. Also, yes, uh testing season. Um it's a lot. I don't know if any of you have uh taken a long exam, a a bar exam or a CPA exam,

but you know, third graders that sit for hours and hours and do reading and math, it it's a big task. Um, and so the teachers, all our third and fifth grade staff, um, are doing a great job encouraging them and helping them to, you know, try their best and do their best. Uh, last win or Friday, we had, uh, bingo night at Orchard Hill. So again, Brad Nelson is our PEA president. Uh, he and Katie McCormick and Sarah Gstrom coordinated that and it was a lot of fun. >> Big success. >> We did not win at all. >> President did not win that, >> but I was able to harass him about a Dodger score. Oh yeah, >> he was harassing me all night on the back of her. >> Yeah. >> Uh want to

go next to high school. >> Good evening, Lauren Ross, principal of pirate ship. Um I'm sure you have heard this teacher appreciation and we love our teachers and um we're celebrating them all week as well. Um did want to just acknowledge what our some of our student preps have said. There's a lot of events in the spring and people go above and beyond just the teaching and the not serum, right? And so those hours of of prom. We have tons of track meets that take a bunch of people to run and teachers are stepping in to do that all the time. And so um amazing work happening in the classroom and beyond and we're just so thankful for the teachers at Phoenix High School and beyond. Um our instructional leadership team deserves a shout out.

We're doing a lot of work wrapping up one school year and preparing for the next as you all know and so doing a lot of work right now looking at our smarter balanced scores and how we can um build a plan next year to ensure that students are hitting the bar and um growing in those areas. And so I just want to shout out to those team members and we did this to share have prom requirements around attendance. Um there was a little bit of hub up about that on our campus, but it was a great success in our attendance increase um for the month of April because of that. And so we will probably continue that um with our goal of attendance growth. Um we also want to shout out to Alyssa Barber who

is our testing coordinator in addition to our um instructional coach. Um AP testing is happening right now. We're wrapping up OSAS and so just a lot of a lot of a lot. Um and then lastly, we're um adding two um designations to our graduation ceremony this year. One is an OSAS tassel recognizing students who have passed as OSAs their junior year with a white tassel and then also um a pin for seniors with 92% attendance during their senior year as well as a cord for students who have maintained a 92% attendance all four years. So again just adding some of that regalia um to acknowledge some of those goals. That's it from the high school. All right. Uh, good evening board. Casey over principal at Salent Middle School. Um, continuing the theme of teacher appreciation

week. Um, really what I'll say, and I said this out, I probably said it here. I think what we do, I always call it kind of a beautiful mess. Um, and that, you know, we get to carry the hard, the beautiful, the amazing, the challenging, the all you name it. and the way that our teachers hold that space for our kids, especially the emotional roller coaster of middle school. Um, yeah. So, I just appreciate our teachers and the work that they do. Um, I also wanted to give Carrie McDonald, our school nurse. Um, we did an honor of her yesterday at our staff meeting and the Ashlin Community Health Foundation. Um, came to honor and celebrate her as well. Came with different donations. They had nurse themed cookies that were delicious. Um, and Carrie I

like not only just to have her expertise but like her heart um for kids and staff and all of it. Um, yeah, she's just amazing to have. Um, tonight uh we had a family night for our incoming sixth graders uh that are in the 2A immersion program um in our elementary schools. Um, and so I just wanted to Danielle Daniellea Goodman, Elita Marx, Maria Lee, and Tiffany Lambert as well just for support and really looking at how we can make um, opportunities for our students not only to develop the language acquisition and proficiency, but um, growth and belonging um, and just cultural awareness as well. And so grateful for their work in that. Um, last time I believe I talked about pirates to Raiders and so we have about 22 eighth graders that are participating

in this program and getting exposure to SOOU and opportunities. Uh, Felipe Reyes who's coordinating this. Uh, took our students to SOOU last week for a field trip. Maybe that was this week. Thanks this week. Appreciate you. Um, it's been a week. Um, and yeah, they came back and just like uh I don't know. I think that's like the buzz that we provide for kids of having opportunities and exposing them and they were just they were the buzz like and they were excited about um what they got to do at SRO. Um and then last but not least, I also want to give a shout out to our instructional lead team. Uh so Brian Taylor, Scoshi Wise, Celia, Julie Stinson, uh Andrew Kemp, and Jen Baker. Um, we're just having a lot of conversations right now

in the middle school of how we can fine-tune and have more consistent systems around curriculum, around grading. Um, and I just really appreciate their voice and just us have at the table having hard conversations and um, just how we can really fine-tune what we do, not only as a staff, but then as a result, how that's going to impact kids as they pass through sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. Thank you. evening board Aaron Santi PT um we don't recognize teacher appreciation week >> but it turns out last week there was a principal appreciation day and we do recognize that >> I want to thank staff for this even >> um just really quickly I talked to you guys about our kind of how we function and what the students that we serve. And so I

had asked uh Danny, our office manager, to just do a quick inventory of the kind of the the types of kids that we've picked up over the last few months. And this is just a rundown of the type of students that we're serving and why they came to us. So we've taken on students whose health challenges make it difficult to attend in person. We have students who have family members with sign significant medical issues that take them out of town for treatment for extended time. students whose social behavioral struggles in uh in person make things difficult for them. Students whose families experienced sudden sudden changes and had to move out of town including uh homelessness and students looking for a more personalized and challenging curriculum. So these are just kids in the last two months.

Those are the reasons they've come to us. So this is the product that we're offering to families and being able to serve them in unique situations that may not fit inside a normal school box. So, um, I'm proud of the staff for what they do to help support those families. >> Anybody else? >> Thank you. >> Literacy was a big hit and snar wanted to thank Paulolly. Thank you for volunteering and I don't know we would do without you. Also, thank you to the team here and a big thanks to the Phoenix High School Book Club led by Miss Zaki. They were amazing. the high school support and thank you to our media managers who ran the book fair for that. Um Casey mentioned that yesterday was school nurse appreciation day. So I just want

to echo that and appreciate how much we appreciate her nurse Carrie. Um having one nurse for an entire district does a lot and she does a great job. >> Good evening. Can't talk. Good evening everybody. It's Ryan Sweet, executive chair for our district. Uh, I just want to give you guys a quick food service update. Uh, I want to start by thanking the Talent Elementary School lunch aids. They were huge yesterday. Huge help. Uh, little background. I was able to get to Talent Elementary and host a bite science tasting and eco recycling activity. >> Um, they helped me get some boats together. So, we kind of got some new ideas on things we're going to implement in the menu. It's going to be great. Um, I also wanted to thank Cody Villigas from Eagle Point

School District for her partnership. she was able to come out and help give out samples while I was able to educate kids on sustainability and recycling. Um, a couple of local sourcing initiatives and recent events. Again, following up on that bite science tasting and ecoheroes recycling activity. Uh, we did that at Town Elementary. Yes. Uh, yes, yesterday. Sorry, um, Heather Steel, our regional nutritionist from Sedexo was out from the Midwest on April 21st. Her and I tag team Phoenix Elementary. And then next Wednesday, May 13th, I will be at Orchard Hill. Um these events continue to build excitement around nutrition, education, sustainability, and new menu offerings. Um we've established some new partnerships with Wandering Roots Farm and Rusted Gate Farm, both out of the Rogue Valley. Um April 23rd, we offered Ace at XLTO was

the Hulie Hulie Chicken. Uh received a lot of strong positive feedback from students. And then of course, Cinco de Mayo, May 5th. We did uh local carneasada, local tortillas, homemade salsas. It was a huge hit. Um and then lastly, some upcoming projects and initiatives. Um when we get back in the fall, I'd like to host a fine dining event for students and just kind of educate them on that experience. >> Um yeah, and then we've got uh suggestion boxes up at both the middle school and high school. Um, and then to close out, the uh fall food service or I'm sorry, spring food service survey is live still till the 22nd. So, if you haven't voted, please do submit your feedback. >> Thanks guys. It's time. >> All right. Thank you all. Oh, we're good.

Okay. Any questions? Any positives from the board? I think we're positive now. Okay. Um, next >> is Rick has >> Oh, Rick has something on. Sorry, Rick. Go ahead. >> If I just may say this, I've been with this district for a long time and I've watched it function and my my hats really off to the teachers. You mentioned the teachers tonight. Uh it's like the military. They're in the trenches >> and uh they do a marvelous job and they've been doing it >> through my career here. You're here. >> Please tell the teachers. Thank you. >> You're here, Rick. Thank you. >> And it's May, so yeah. Okay. Next is citizens comments. Did we have anybody who wanted to address the board? >> Hi, my name is >> Yeah, >> I guess I'm nervous.

But anyway, um my name is Rosario Ruiz and good evening everyone board members and thank you for giving me a few minutes here of your time. And so basically um as you see on your tables there for the Phoenix High grad night. So I'm here to formally um invite everybody if you can go. Yes. And um and it seems to be going we're working really hard the booster club to put this together with family because we're doing it for the seniors, right? And um some of them as you know have been in our district since kinder or even if they just started their junior year. We want them to have a great great evening um grad night. So this it's a fundraiser auction and if you are willing to uh donate or be be a

part of this great event, we also have a GoFundMe page and you can find that in the um the grad graduation different kinds of lists are going on. So and um and it sounds like there's so much going on. I think this would be a great time for you to have a break and go outside and enjoy the weather. Hopefully we have good weather. and something to eat and you know so and that's pretty much you know and um also since this is a theme of teacher appreciation I've had a chance and this is not the hat of the um the uh the uh grad night team but just my own personal experience that I've had a chance to go in and sub at different schools and I just see these teachers just hardworking teachers

as well as instructional assistants just trying their best every day, showing up, and I've always just felt so welcome. So, I just wanted to put that out there. I've always felt welcome when I come into the classroom. So, >> Thank you for being here. >> Right. >> Does that make it my turn? >> Yes. Pa update. Welcome. >> Yeah. Hi. Thanks. Um, good evening board. I'm Julie Stinson, Pallet Middle School ELA. Um and I'm here to share the ETA building report. Um tonight's report is short and sweet. Uh we'd like to start by thanking the district and the board for this year's teacher appreciation festivities. Thank you for all the comments tonight too. Um from the special themed treats provided lunch and long sleeved PT um s gear. We also like to express our appreciation

for the collaborative effort between the district and the PTEA as we navigate the transfers both voluntary and involuntary that have resulted from the district's efforts to reduce through attrition. This collaboration helps to ensure contract adherence and fairness to everyone involved. So we appreciate that. Finally, we'd like to recognize our PTA vice president, Rosario Medina. Rosario also serves as the chair of OEA's SOPAC or Southern Oregon political action committee. Rosario has led the SOPAC members and interviewing local candidates and making decisions about endorsements with the goal of supporting proublic education candidates. Tonight, SOPAC is hosting a town hall for educators featuring SOPAC endorsed candidate Christian Mendoza. >> She has a pretty awesome mom, too. Oh my god. >> Thank you so much. All right. >> All right. Superintendent report. Uh thank you, Chair Campbell. I just

uh Rebecca's modeling those long sleeve that the board um >> gave to the teachers this week. >> They were a pretty big hit. I mean, the these turned out really well. And so uh um the board and um that was a gift to the teachers and so uh thank you for that and thank you for those who spearheaded that as well. I just want to thank the teachers uh as well. We we just have amazing dedicated uh selfless teachers that work hard for kids and families um every day and it it comes at a perfect time. I don't know about you but April really feel like felt like a traditional May and we haven't even gone through May yet. So, it was a long month and so at the beginning of May, we always get

to celebrate our teachers and so just uh we're grateful for the dedication and the hard work for our teachers. I just do want to recognize and Ryan kind of uh for for all that he was able to share. I just really appreciate this board and through the RFP process to really work with Sedexo and expand the services that Sedexo provide. I think having an executive chef uh uh this year has we've seen huge benefits with local patrol or local uh uhly sourced um uh foods and and education as well. So just thank the board. Brian, thank you uh for uh becoming a part of our family. So you guys >> uh do want to share uh we did and thank Tiffany Lambert and we mentioned this um or sent an email out. We got our

summer school grant that we received uh which is a pretty big uh piece of how we're going to move forward the next three years. Uh $452,000 each of the next three summers um we are receiving from the state to do a summer school program. And um that is a huge accomplishment. Thank you Tiffany and her team for applying for that. Um that was hard work but planning for that is a little harder as well. Uh, but I will tell you, we have amazing staff members, both licensed and classified, that are already jumping at the bit to help serve our kids this summer. Um, and that's that that is great to see because not a lot of districts have staff that want to continue that support for for their uh kids. And so, um, just again

very grateful for our team here. Uh, finally, my last one, uh, Rosie, you took that right out of May 17th. Hope everybody can join the seniors. This has been a longstanding tradition um of uh uh providing a safe environment for our seniors after graduation. Um and hope to see everybody there. >> Thanks a lot. >> And if any of you are hungry after this meeting, you can go to the foodery and they're also donating a portion of their proceeds >> to um the senior grad night tonight. >> What time does that end? And I thought it would get better, but maybe I read the proof wrong. Do you know you know >> you know I don't breathe very well. >> Heather's going to go right now >> I'm doing sound for the crowd right now.

Should definitely come. You're right. Got a sound. Okay. because I was going to go after me and then I realized I couldn't. >> Bummer. Okay. Uh consent agenda. Do I have a motion to approve the consent agenda? >> I move to approve the consent agenda as presented. >> I will second it. >> Thank you, Rebecca. Thank you, Don. Any objections? Hearing none, the consent agenda is approved. Information and discussion, legislative OSBA update. >> We have a lot. Sorry. Um I was on a call I think it was last week of all you guys can't remember. I can't remember either. Um according to the accountability bill that passed um 141 the uh they had to have a third-party consulting group talk to different groups about division 22 and 24 standards. When I was invited to be

on there I think I was the first one that said yes. I mean, I answered that email within like I didn't even finish reading it. Um, it was very interesting. A lot of the there was a very small group of school. So, they talked to different they talked to school board members and and um administrators and different other groups about what we felt about division 22 and 24. For those that you don't know, 24 is the is the ESD's accountable um things they have to do. Um there was great conversation. One of the things that we asked which we don't want to know the answer because we don't want OD to spend the time on it is those schools that have not been in compliance, are they any lower than the schools that have been

in compliance? From our knowledge, it's the same. So obviously we don't want to spend a year doing a study on this because it but I think it's interesting. I mean I think it's something the superintendent could just go Yeah. Um, and but I think that that was an interesting conversation like there's no like, oh, this school isn't in compliance and look at their scores. That's not what's happening. So, there was a lot of talk about what division 22 standards were needed, which ones obviously safety, um, which ones we didn't need, which ones should have more local control. So, it was a good robust conversation. I'll let you know what happens out of that conversation, but it was very interesting and it was across the board all the we all kind of agreed that division 22

standards was um a cha made a challenge that wasn't necessary sometimes and um we had examples. I had a list of them. Um summer school OSBA summer school is um Denise added the flyer to the packet. There was Pace Day. Um, I went, Jessica went, Michael went. I always love Pace Day. I feel like there's a lot of information. Um, I went to the immigration bill workshop. I'm a little bit nervous about the way that's going to be implemented, but and the time that it's going to be implemented, but I hopefully um the imple in implementation goes well. Some of my concerns were um trauma informed practices. Some of the practices they talked about I was a little concerned about being trauma informed and I can talk more about that later and it and it

was something that was in the room as well. Um then we also let's see then we had our meeting the day before and the day before we voted for a increase for um insurance. We expected the increase to be 12 to 15% but we were able to get the increase to only be 9.5 to 12% depending on your district. So um luckily everything kind of went into place. I don't know if you ever want to see like this uh puzzle of insurance. They have like all these little squares up and this this insurance company covers this and these four and cover this and these five cover this one little spot and so it we actually everybody got together and it was really nice and we I guess we didn't have any big claims on some

stuff. So that was good. Um, I'm also part and I think Brent is two of the one which is the Oregon Network for Education and Excellence. She has it divided into three groups. Um, a superintendent group, a schoolboard group, and a CBO group. The CBO group has not started yet, which is community. >> Yes, thank you. >> That has not started yet. She's still looking for funding for that. Pujo runs it. She worked for the governor's office, as you know, or may know. Um, she has been writing some very lengthy but very informative briefs and documentation. You can find them on the website. I will send it to Denise so she can so she can give it to you. But it's oregon or Oregon excellence.org. Um, she writes most of it. We come up with

a top she comes up with a topic. We give her information. She gets feedback. She like you know rewrites it. comes back to us and we have some robust conversations and then we send out this information. It's a great group that is really looking at changing the structure. Our goal is to change the structure of the way things at least bring some kind of different um ideas to the legislature and change the structure because the structure isn't working but we're working in silos and everyone has their own idea what's working. And so the first step is informing people on what is going on. So that there's really great briefs on that website. I was going to look it up real quick. Like one is who's in charge. Um another one's like um the the snapshot

of what Oregon's doing versus other u other states. Uh OSBA is having a policy update webinar on Tuesday the 12th 10 to 11 for staff and 12 to 1 for schoolboard members. And OSBA is moving right along with the governance structure process. They have started the focus um work groups. I don't know if any of you signed up for that. And um we have a tight timeline, but so far we're on schedule and hopefully we will have um more data to make decide if we're going to change the governance structure um at the end of the year. >> Sorry that apologize. >> Any questions for Don? >> Yeah, Paceay was very informative. I sufficiently was scared to death after hearing some of the presentations. Um, yeah. >> Now you know why I always say like

>> always has the worst case scenario in your brain. >> Yeah. >> Uh, committee reports. Do we have any committee? >> Okay. Um, long range facilities master plan. I'm going to kick this to you. >> Yeah. Thank you, Chair Campbell. We have, I believe, Susan. Oh, and Okay. And yeah. Um we have our consultants on and uh we sent you the packet. Um there have been a few updates on that and they're going to highlight the updates that they um have in the packet and uh we shared this um a draft of this a couple months ago when we were developer meeting. Uh so welcome our consultants. If you can share kind of the the major updates and then what the next steps are for as far as to uh wrap up this project and

and uh I want to thank you for how hard you've worked, how much you've analyzed our facilities and this uh this is a very detailed report. So thank you. I'll turn it over to you though. >> Yes, sir. Thank you superintendent and board for having us this evening. Uh as uh the superintendent mentioned, we were here uh a couple months ago in February presenting to the board on uh the long-range facilities plan. Um uh essentially what's occurred since then is we've written the report. Uh the state does require a report, a written report to go with that. And so um materially the report is really more just a written context uh of the presentation that was provided in February. Um, and so it's it's not our intent to go through all 157ish pages of that,

but um, we did want to be available uh, if there were any further questions and um, and also just just state that we're we're thankful um, and we're grateful for the work that we've been able to to do with Phoenix Talent. It's been it's been a real pleasure. So, um, with that, if the, uh, we're just here for questions if there are any. And, um, yeah, we'll turn it back over. >> And so, the next steps is that, uh, you share this with our board here, which we're doing tonight, and then you turn this uh into the state to um, finalize that grant um that we that we received. So, >> yes, sir. Right. Yes, sir. That is correct. And we have uh there's two components of this process. the facility condition assessments. Uh, and

the state has a very specific method of assessing the schools. And so we've already submitted all of the workbooks back to, um, the state for those. That's complete. Um, and this, uh, this report is the second half of that. And so, um, that's the last piece. This will get submitted. And then of course in the future if you you know apply for grant funding you would uh be eligible with this uh long range facilities plan uh under your bill. >> I will just mention um after our last report uh that John and I got together and you know he works pretty quick. We're already working on replacing the chiller at Orchard Hill. Uh will likely be done this summer. um and have identified some funds through construction excise tax and some capital uh funding that

uh we we will have for next year too. So just as a FYI I looked through the report I didn't see anything substantively different than the presentation we got the how long ago was that >> months two months ago. Okay. Yeah. Any questions on the long range facilities? Thank you for all of your work on this. We really appreciate it. >> It's been a pleasure. Thank you all. >> Great. >> Appreciate it. >> Thanks so much. >> All right. Um and the next item is the student representative um applications. Um just to review, we have 12 applications. Is that is the is it closed now? It >> is closed. >> It's closed. Okay. Um, and I had Denise upload the uh blank application for you all. Um, Don, did you want to talk or can

somebody talk speak to the changes that were made? Did you all already do that at the last meeting or >> We did not. >> Okay. >> And I think it was it ended up just being me and Sarah and Kayn that did some of the changes. >> Yeah. >> Um, >> Sarah Sarah gets to keep her foot in this thing. Great ideas. And I'm looking for the bl I'm looking for the blank one. The bottom. >> You have to refresh. >> No, I have to books doesn't work on Do you want to speak to it? >> Yeah. Um Okay. >> No, I No, I am not it. >> Um so we changed just to get a little bit more and Kayn can get to can jump in a little bit. We changed questions just to

get a little bit more fill of what this what the students were um to get different kind of demographic so we're not just having you know we're having a wide variety of students and we changed the um the questions around and also uh we ch we had them work on um three policies. They're going to work on three policies. Did you want to add some stuff to that? >> Well, one of one of the things that um Kayn asked of us was to just be able to provide some clarity on how we see the interview process going >> on my list, but you said about the applications. >> Oh, yay. >> Let's talk about the application. I can't I think that one of the things that we were trying to like make sure we were

addressing is making sure that students were being prepared for some more of the work that you're hoping they'll do here. Um and the task that we had done in the past was more leadership based. And so uh we thought bringing in a policy would be better. And so we gave them the option of looking at three policies and then instead of just having a form that says like their name and grade, really kind of getting to know them a little bit more on paper so you're not relying on that interview process, right? Where things kind of get missed and so you have some time as a board to kind of look at a little bit more of who they are on paper. >> Yeah. >> Great. Um so I think a decision point for us

is um you know we have 12 applicants um they have they're been tasked with this um activity to review a policy and speak with five to seven other students to gather perspectives on the impact on students um student perspectives and then the implementation in practice and so I feel like some kind of presentation about that work would be beneficial. Um, but I'd love to get some input and we need to think about things like time, a length of time. We have 12 applicants, so um, kind of needs to be concise. >> Do you mind if I go first? Go real quick because I met with some of I went with the students and they first of all, great group. I was glad I got to be with them because then they realized what one person

is like this is not going to be for me and I'm like this is great life lesson that you came you realized it and you didn't spend any more time and energy on this because we've all been were like oh yeah and then halfway through like this is not for me. Um and they really the ones I did talk to really are wanting to change. Some of them, a couple of them talked to me about they were a freshman when Javier was a senior on the board and the things he got to do and so they were wondering. So there was great conversations. One wants to bring a group of students to the schoolboard and talk about a CTE program. I said great, let's do it. So they were great ideas, but they had questions

for me that I didn't know the answer. So >> I'm going to tell you and then we can discuss them later. They wanted to know when they were going to find out if they made it, how they were going to find out, how long they had to speak. Um, let's see. Uh, also how long it was going to take for us to debate it. Um, I have my own ideas that we need to put ourselves in the time check because we're not so good at that. Um, and then, um, if we had, you know, how many were we were going to interview? At the time, I didn't know. And then how much, you know, again, how much um time did they get? And then are we gonna ask them any followup questions with a question

Kaylin asked? And in the past, we've only asked um like is there anything else you want to tell us? So those were kind of off the top of my head. If I'm forgetting something, please jump in. But I just wanted to start that off so when we have discussion next, you guys would know what questions the students had. I don't know why I get amnesia every year, but I don't It seems like we >> we were cared. We debated. We emailed. >> Yeah. We didn't um Yeah. We didn't announce it during the meeting. >> No. Because there was factors, right? They weren't like all sitting here while some guys said we did it by >> which I feel like I don't know how we feel about that but it would probably be good to hear

from our students. >> Some of which are applying. >> Yes, >> I think the email was good. Um especially since like I have to get home and take care of things and if you guys want to like really talk about it, there's no like tying it down if somebody's like nervous and like I don't know if I'm going to get it or not. I don't want anybody to hear if I didn't get it. Like you can just kind of like be sad by yourself or be happy by yourself and kind of like you don't have to like have your emotions in front of everybody. So I kind of think that was a little bit nicer. >> I agree. I feel like being in front of a whole bunch of people and then them announcing, "Oh,

you did or didn't make it could possibly make someone really nervous and like the anxiety gets you, especially in front of a lot of people." I think is a good way to announce who >> I'm just thinking about how when we interviewed you when you were a freshman and that you're going to be a senior next year and I'm wondering how that happened so quickly. >> Yeah. >> Crazy. Okay, that's great feedback. Did you have any feedback? I think email is a great idea. Gives you guys time to decide and like really take your time. Doesn't put students on the spot and have like sitting breaks. Remember last year it took a while. We were just waiting anxiously, but if we know that it's going to be an email, yeah, >> we can kind of

just sit and think about it. >> That's the biggest thing as far as the time frame that they're asking about how much time they have to speak. If there's 12 applicants, we need to really consider maybe just a three minute. >> We do have a public comment. Believe we're not >> it. I mean, just to share it is a really light agenda. So I think we can have the flexibility to next week's agenda or the next agenda really might. So >> I'm looking at agenda. >> Five minutes each will be an hour. >> Yeah. If you look halfway through, we could take a recess if we wanted to. Um >> I'm just concerned like if we give them five minutes, but then we have questions. >> Five minutes total. Can you >> you need to

>> and if you look at those questions I mean I'm going back to speaking debate >> this feels like a lot in three minutes >> we're not asking >> oh the the policy question >> but the other thing that I was if you want to let me know I can make sure that they're like prepared for the presentation right so I'm going to meet with them anyway to ensure like hey you've turned turn in your application. This is what you should be working on next. I can help them, right? Kind of make sure that those things are concise. We can give them some frameworks, some graphic or like some some things kind of help them so that we can ensure that those are concise presentations. Um, so I can help with that. >> Um, that

works for >> Oh, I was just going to say if you are going to do that, an email might not be the best. I know some people don't check their emails. >> I'll call them down. >> I'll call the office because I think some people will not see that >> Tik Tok. >> Uh, okay. So, how long do we want and what do we want them to present? Do we want them to answer these three things? One of these three things. >> I'd like to know what policy they chose. clear that don't answer these three questions. >> I do worry a little bit we're going to get some repetition. So, any way to make it >> I don't know what I'm sure you've thought this through. What if you in all your spare time? What

What do you think would be the most effective? >> Um, one I don't know if it's a really good idea to have them sit and watch each other. The only reason is because then what happens is with the repetition. I kind of did the same thing at this end and they their presentation kind of gets >> they get derailed. >> I mean it's nice for them to hear each other and have like peer support but I think sometimes that impacts it. Mhm. >> Um maybe we can schedule >> that way. We're not listening to each other's presentation every five minutes. >> I think it would help with nerves too. And also you're not like piggybacking off somebody else's idea in a way >> and it's less repetition. You guys have breaks between like discuss like

right after. And also I think that when a bunch of people and especially since the next person watching you say something and then the next person's like, "Oh, I was going to say that >> and they did like >> they die just right." >> Well, and I've seen in the past the opposite where the where the people then add on. They're like, "Oh, now that I heard her talk, now I'm going to change it." And they make theirs better. And so I'm one of those >> crowdsourcing their answers. >> I I I may have done that before in my life. Um so so I think that there's an advantage of going towards the middle, right? If you're beginning it's new. The middle you can make it up make it you know your own and kind

of jazz it up and at the end everybody's heard it. So I think that you're correct that there's >> if we just have scheduled >> I think it can be that's really manageable. >> Okay. I'd like to suggest that the students who are applying attend a regular meeting and listen to the student reps and see how they interact. >> Maybe in the future we might be able to be more proactive >> that would have been tonight. >> Yeah, this is the last time for >> what do we want them to present on >> and how long and for how long? Five minutes >> separately. >> I thought 3 minutes separately, >> right? >> Oh, we're just allotting five minutes per student, right? With the three minute presentation. >> Is that what we're thinking? >> I

think we can say up to five minutes if you're >> some people can be very concise. Some of us are oral processors and it might take us a minute. So, >> no longer than five minutes. Yeah. I don't have anything in mind particularly that I want them to discuss. Like I I would like to leave that up to the student, but I'm okay with anybody else's decision. >> Well, aren't they supposed to talk about the policy and then the three questions? >> I think that would make sense. >> I assume consistency that way you're measuring them all the same thing versus all three. >> They didn't turn anything into you guys about that. So the only thing that they've turned in were those questions about themselves and the ideas that they're going to be doing

that task, right? >> And so I assume that that's what they would be presenting as well. >> Okay. >> I think some clarity like do you want them to talk to you a little bit about who they are for a little bit before that or are you going to or should they assume that you've read their application like hi I'm Kaylin Cross you've read all about me here in my board presentation or do you want them to talk a little bit about themselves and then dive into that? I think it's beneficial for students to share who they are. It gives us a more intimate connection to who they are and it also validates you know >> them being um so I would love if they present themselves and also answer this also encouraging that time

management like don't spend five minutes talking about yourself and get to the nitty-gritty of the questions. Yeah. >> Um, okay. Is that helpful? Give you what you need. Okay. You're gonna call them down to the office and create a Tik Tok. Got it. Okay. Great. >> And we're going to have them individually come out. >> Yes. Yeah. We could have >> Yeah, you could have. >> Great. Okay. And now you guys have a sneak preview. There you go. >> Maybe someone from out there could keep time for us so one of us doesn't because Sarah's not here to do that anymore. So >> Oh, I can keep >> Yeah, someone can like keep them on track. >> And just so you know, I will not be at the next board meeting and I will not

be online. >> What? Which I'm sad but glad because I did talk to some of them in person and then I was like, how am I going to try to be Yes. So, I was like, the good thing is I won't be around to be in I'll be pleasantly surprised. >> Uh, okay. >> We could take a recess. I also think we could get through the next three items in like five minutes. So, should we just keep going? Okay. >> Um, textbook adoption. >> Yeah. >> Yes. Uh, we went through the textbook adoption adoption on information discussion last time. if you have any questions. If not, we're ready to recommend that for approval. >> Okay. >> I move to approve the social sciences textbook adoption as preventive. >> Okay. Now, >> thank you, Rebecca. Thank

you, Nancy. Discussion. These are always such big undertakings. So, thank you for all the work. Um, yes. Um, okay. Anything else? Oh, okay. Yes. >> Nancy, >> yes. >> Paulie, >> yes. >> Rick, >> yes. Don, >> yes. >> Rebecca, >> yes. >> I vote yes. >> Social sciences was adopted. Uh, PHS SRO. Yeah. This is the uh Phoenix City Council uh presented this last week, couple weeks ago. Um, and for approval, a very similar agreement uh with the Phoenix SRO. And so this is for your approval. I will just tell you I got an update or I called for an update on the talent SRO and they are still working through their budget items. I think there's a meeting on um see next Wednesday I think >> I think so >> um for to

continue the discussion on um the SRO program or the the budget in general that includes uh public safety. So um hopefully we'll have that here soon. >> Great. Do I have a motion? >> I move to approve the SRO contract for PHS as presented. >> Second. >> Thank you, Rebecca. Thank you, Rick. Discussion. >> Discussion. Uh, I read through it, but how what's the finances? Financial. >> Yeah, we do about we do half and half essentially with Phoenix. Yeah. Yeah. >> And what about coverage for uh Phoenix Elementary? >> Yes. It's the same. And actually, our SRO at Phoenix often uh does a lot of services at Orchard Hill as well. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Cool. >> Yeah. >> Any more discussion? Okay. Diana, >> yes. >> Nancy, >> yes. >> Holly, >> yes.

>> Rick, >> yes. >> Don, >> yes. >> Rebecca, here. >> Yes. >> Superintendent contract addendum. Uh this is uh an addendum essentially extending the existing agreement with our superintendent one year to end June 30th 2020. Do I have a motion? >> I move to approve the addendum to superintendent contract for 2026 2027 as presented. >> Yes, that would clarify it. >> Just clarify it's 2728. >> Yes. Okay. Yeah, they it's in the workbook. It said Oh, the thing is wrong. Oh, god. >> I misread it. >> Okay. >> Sorry. No problem. >> Yeah. >> Thank you, Nancy. >> 720. >> Thank you, Nancy. Thank you, Diana. >> I need to meet with you for some literacy support. >> Oh jeez. >> Where? >> Any discussion? We appreciate you and we're glad that you want

to extend your contract another year. Thank you. >> All right. Uh Diana, >> thank you. >> Nancy, >> yes. >> Paulie, >> yes. >> Rick, >> yes. >> Don, >> yes. >> Rebecca, >> yes. >> How about no? Just kidding. >> Okay, the next meeting agenda is there for your review. Um And we will have our favorite meeting over the years interviewing our students. >> Can we actually have a headcount for who's going to be here for the student rep meeting? Not the budget, but the Okay, >> I'm going to be here. No, >> you will be here. >> It is a Wednesday. >> Yeah, >> for the budget meeting. >> Okay. >> I'm going to be with the fifth graders tamping. >> Yeah. >> Okay. That should be >> Denise behind us is that

six, right? Yes. >> All right, we are Thank you.
