001so I'll just offer it up to however I could meet him um I could just do it when we get to that point yeah oh thank you you want to read one of the resolutions okay do you have a preference and I'll take the other one he doesn't no all right everyone the red light is on so we are considered live and online um welcome to the June 13th 2023 board meeting um maybe we'll I can't even speak will we may we begin with the instructions for interpretation for our Spanish-speaking audience thank you madam president Buena presentes interpretation is thank you thank you so much I'd like to call the regular meeting of the Adams 14 Board of Education on Tuesday June 13 2023 to order please join me as we stand for the Pledge

002of Allegiance at a moment of silence tonight I ask that this moment of silence be in honor of a longtime Karma City resident that we recently lost Irene Fernandez I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States thank you all first on the agenda is 2.4 uh roll call Ramona can you conduct roll call please Mr Amador here Ms Estrada Mrs Estrada's excuse Ms Lovato Here Is Molina here is Zubia Mississippi is also excused um we do have a quorum barely thank you everyone um next on the agenda may I have a motion to approve the minutes of the May 9th 2023 regular board meeting and the May 10th 2023 special meeting and the May 25th 2023 study session and executive session a motion to approve thank you Ramona Rocco please Mr Amador aye

003Ms Estrada is Lovato I Is Molina by Zubia she's excused thank you uh next on the agenda is approval of the agenda may I have a motion to approve the agenda for this evening all motions to approve Ramona broccoli please Mr Amador aye Mrs Estrada Miss Lovato aye Ms Molina I am cheese excuse thank you next on the agenda is uh celebrations and recognitions um first we have a proclamation honoring lgd lgbtq pride month um since director Zubia is not here and our next in line uh director strata is not here is there anyone that would like to read this Proclamation or would you like me to it no it has to be a board member okay thank you Proclamation LG lgbtq pride month June 2023 whereas the Adams County school district 14 is committed

004to supporting the dignity equity and visibility of all people in the community whereas lesbian gay bisexual transgender and queer lgbtq pride month commemorates The Stonewall riots in June of 1969 which led lgbtq and Americans to fight for equality and justice whereas it was key figures such as Marsha P Johnson and Sylvia Rivera who began advocating in the early 1970s for the equal treatment and rights of lgbtq plus people both of whom were persons of color whereas in the month of June we celebrate our diverse identities and the contributions of the lgbtq community in the United States and recognize the month as a personal Personnel celebration of self-worth and dignity whereas although progress has been made toward the Equitable treatment of the lgbtq community research shows they still face discrimination simply for being who they are

005thus making it crucial that the district and its allies stand up and show support for all students staff and families affected whereas due to negative attitudes and cultural stigmas lgbtq and youth Nationwide remain at a higher risk for bullying teasing physical violence than their peers who do not identify as lgbtq whereas lgbtq plus youth also experience higher X incidents rates of mental disorders such as anxiety and depression and are increased risk of self-harm suicidal attempts and suicide compared with youth who do not identify as lgbtq plus whereas Colorado is one of the states with the most anti-discrimination laws in place to protect the rights of people of various sexual orientations and gender identities and thus narrowing the gaps of inequality in the state and whereas this annual recognition reminds us of the continued work needed

006to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for all individuals therefore be it proclaimed that the Adams 14 Board of Education and Adams 14 superintendent proclaimed June as the lgbtq pride month in our schools and invite everyone to reflect on ways in which we can all live work together with the commitment to mutual respect and understanding we encourage our staff and Community to teach our students that diversity is our greatest strength and the lgbtq plus students and staff have the same guaranteed rights as their peers we are dedicated to eliminating cultural and social barriers fueled by hatred and ignorance stopping the crisis of bullying and the suicide in our community and creating a safe and inclusive learning environment for all our students let this Proclamation enter the official records of the school district thank you so

007much director Molina may I have a motion proclaiming June 2023 as lgbtq pride month thank you a second um Ramona roll call please Mr Amador Mrs Estrada Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina aye thank you next on the agenda is uh 3.2 Juneteenth Proclamation um I'll take a turn if that's okay um Proclamation June Juneteenth day June 19 2023 whereas on June 1st 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation declaring that all people held as slaves under the Confederacy shall be free whereas the president's Proclamation did not instantly guarantee the freedom of enslaved people the proclamation declared that enslaved people were free in Confederate States but it did not apply to those enslaved and States loyal to the union whereas despite the Emancipation Proclamation Confederate states and slaveholders did not comply with the proclamation due

008to the lack of Union troops to enforce the order thus the freedom of enslaved people in Confederate States was dependent upon the victory of the Union in the Civil War whereas the proclamation declared the acceptance of black men into military service by the end of Civil War by the end of the Civil War nearly two hundred thousand black Soldiers and Sailors fought for the union and freedom whereas on April 9 1865 Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered in Virginia ending the Civil War whereas in on June 19 1865 two and a half years after President Lincoln's Proclamation and two months after the victory of the Union in the Civil War General Gordon Granger issued general order number three in Galveston Texas informing all enslaved people in the state that they were free from bondage the

009state has come to be known as Juneteenth commemorating the abolishment of slavery in the United States whereas emancipation was not a singular event in the United States history but rather many events that contributed to the freedom of enslaved people throughout history whereas freedom of all enslaved people was not fully recognized until December 6 1865 when the requisite number of states ratified the 13th Amendment amendment to the Constitution unofficially abolishing slavery in the United States or officially abolishing whereas 156 years later on June 7 2021 President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day act into law and the day was recognized as a Federal holiday in the United States whereas on May 2nd 2022 Governor Jared Polis signed a bill making Juneteenth the state's 11th state holiday and whereas Adams County school district 14 understands

010that the recognition and celebration of Juneteenth is a critical part of its commitment to Justice Equity diversity and inclusion while the day reminds us of our country's long Legacy of systematic racism inequality and inhumanity it also reminds us of our capacity to heal hope and emerge from our darkest moments therefore therefore be it com proclaimed that the Adams 14 Board of Education and the Adams 14 superintendent proclaimed June 19th as Juneteenth day a time to celebrate the emancipation of enslaved people and the contributions of black African Americans we are dedicated to Justice Equity diversity and inclusion and we strongly encourage our staff and Community to observe recognize and celebrate Juneteenth let this Proclamation enter the official records of the school district may have a motion proclaiming June 19th as June 10th day a motion to

011approve second any discussion from anyone I think all right Ramona roll call please Mr Amador aye Ms Estrada Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina aye msubia thank you passes three to one um next on the agendas audience comments um just a reminder that you have three minutes to speak um there were a few on here that have um an autobiography as the issue I'm assuming that's the video that we had requested to be shown um I do want to invite you up to make public comment but unfortunately because this is streamed live we have not seen this video it also exceeds the three minute time frame um you're welcome to come up and make comment but we're not going to be able to show the video live um first on our list um I would like

012to invite Christy Douglas up um thank you for joining us I do it in the order I have received um I'm sorry I don't hear that yeah sorry there we go oh wow I can actually hear myself now so I guess sort of our initial interaction doesn't need to be repeated so we'll just leave that alone my name is Christy Douglas and I serve as a council person for Commerce City I'm here on my own behalf though this evening I want to let everybody know that there is a town hall for Ward 2 tomorrow night and everyone is invited no matter which Ward that you live in this is kind of monumental for us to have a town hall like this it used to be that it was calling only it was pretty scripted the

013answers were scripted this is actually where the community gets to interact you get to voice your concerns you get to ask questions and we really encourage all of you to participate because this is your city we are your public servants and we need to hear from you so that we can make this the best community possible for everyone also on Thursday night there is music in the park at Veterans Park that's at 6 30 and then on Saturday there's a Senior Resource fair at Adams City High School for thank you for for giving us that building to have hold that event and I believe that is let me see it is on the city's website oh it's it's 9 to 1 p.m or yeah on on Saturday so please anybody who knows seniors who need

014resources to encourage them to attend and then we will have a Juneteenth our very first celebration with the city I don't have the details on that but if you look at the website you'll be able to uh find out all about that and we really would like you to participate in that as well so and I also want you to know that I will be with standing with you on Tuesday morning and I really want a big crowd to show up and and show support so I also invite all of you to join me on Tuesday Morning downtown thank you thank you so much or do you need a minute oh yeah yeah we don't have to do okay yeah I will be saying this in Spanish and then she'll do it in English okay

015okay Senora superintendente is Commerce City um sentences circumstances experimentada um Nosotros element gracias I will say that in English good evening as team members of the board superintendent Lauria and attorney Salazar um as of tonight we have not heard your response to our level four grievance that was filed on May 25th we are here tonight because we are the only two teachers that have been displaced due to Hanson Elementary's closing we were promised a position to go where our students would go and that would have been Monaco Elementary however we didn't even get an opportunity to do so we would like for you to listen to our voice and the events that led to this unforeseen circumstances for us we ask ourselves these questions why is it that being highly qualified and certified in this

016District we have no placement why is it that we are experienced teachers and that seems at a disadvantage instead of an advantage in this District we are both award-winning hard-working dedicated passionate teachers yet we feel that we are being pushed out we have witnessed the different treatment and inequalities given to us from the rest of the teachers at Hanson who were hired immediately and we were left out we would like an opportunity to share our story with you thank you thank you I'd like to invite there's no name but the Youth Empowerment project is there someone here hello welcome of course and if you brought extra we had two that were missing so I'm happy to take them yeah thank you if that's okay awesome for Janet okay thank you hello hi uh my name

017is Deborah um with Youth Empowerment agency along with Trilogy people group and Denver Justice project we launched a pilot for a Youth Empowerment project which is an alternative to the traditional approach of punitive discipline for students during this Pilot We implemented an alternative learning environment and expulsion prevention plan and a student attendance check tracker sheets um we also served 404 students to the refocus room refocus referrals or in-school suspensions we had 880 visits from students throughout the time to utilize the room for brain breaks pressure pass or mediations so that was the total of 1 284 student interactions serves through the room we also created social connections through our after school programs our lunch takeovers and our community days where we had 45 students take part in our for our after school programs we majority

018of the students also reported not eating breakfast coming to school so as a result we started serving snacks so that the students could have a steady Focus essentially the things that we accomplished during this pilot was a clear definition of what rjtj is and what that process consists of we implemented an explosion prevention program that helped two students to be able to continuate and Excel we designed an intake form to capture the needs of the families to focus on the connection between home school and community so that way we can continue to build those social connections that we laid in the and the pilot so the proposal that you all had an opportunity to review there's looking forward into 2023 2024 school year there's five key support offerings that we want to continue with for

019this school year starting off with a transition week for students 6th and 9th graders starting July 24th through the through the 28th really it's an opportunity to prepare them for what the school year is going to look like and how to be successful as they move forward into the new school year then we're going to focus on expanding continuing expanding the refocus rooms and in school suspension rooms in two schools both middle schools acms and Kearney will launch a social emotional elective at the two high schools and a reflection space for those youth really that curriculum is focused on social emotional development and development of executive skills a lot of the Colorado Department of Education essential skills is what that would Translate to uh we would continue and expand the after-school programming in those locations

020as well to continue to serve more students and keep them engaged in meaningful activities um and yeah give them an opportunity to continue to build social connections and then lastly and one of one of the most important is continued support for teachers and staff through professional development offering them an opportunity to really connect with students in a way that's more engaging and less punitive um and focus on the developmental relationships in that space increased student engagement also safety and just healthy relationships in general and then again helping our staff helping your staff continue to understand the restorative justice and transformative Justice process improving supports overall throughout the district all of those efforts what we bring to the table also what you all bring we want to just continue to be a compliment to you and

021the families that are already well resourced um all of these efforts ultimately the goal is focusing on reducing disrupt disruptive behaviors in the classroom improving in-class and in school in general performance strengthening relationships between students staff and community and parents and just really strike up a sense of belonging with students overall Student Success District success Community success and that concludes our public comments um thank you all for joining us this evening please note um well we don't respond to public comment during board meetings we heard you and um Dr Lydia heard you and um we'll follow up any on any outstanding items so thank you and thanks again to our students amazing work and I can't wait to see the videos and the additional work I got to see I will say our uh still

022live by literacy event that we have every year is one of my favorites you guys always do a tremendous job and um thank you for sharing your work with us yes [Applause] next on the agendo is uh superintendent reports um Dr Lydia I'd like to turn it over to you thank you madam president members of the board um I as you can see we have a lot of students from our spring Sports I'm going to start with them because I know it has been a long a long night for our students and a couple of babies joining as well so uh Mr Drew um La crew or for a moment I was spacing out uh can you uh please come and introduce our students and talk a little bit about our spring sports that we're

023so proud about Madam president as he gets closer to the podium uh a couple of months ago we were celebrating also another group of students for a winter Sport and uh it's just um a great way to engage and continue uh interacting with our students outside of the classroom so thank you just for our um it doesn't yeah I think I changed the order because I was going to start with those who are online but since there are so many students here I decided to all right that's right so yeah so we're just gonna go over just a quick wrap-up of our spring Sports here at Adam City High School and a little uh amongst the collaboration with Adam City Middle School and Kearney Middle School this year for spring Sports uh baseball girls tennis

024track and field boys volleyball boys swimming and girl soccer boys basketball had around 32 kids uh was great to see a lot of these kids around the underclassmen because it helps it gives us hope for to continue to continue to build our program for the generation for the next couple years um The Varsity the varsity team started off a little rocky but we once we started molding together we started we went on a roll and we made it to the league championship game during the school year we played this team multiple times and really wasn't a game this team was a very solid team it was 16 years uh the championship game five to two our kids came out ready to play and excited so they made it a real good game all the way

025up to the last inning so we were excited to get it in because uh Mother Nature counseled a lot of games in the last two weeks so we were unfortunately able to probably miss about four games due to rain you know so that the championship game was actually uh possibility of again Council unless those coaches put in work on those fields so it was great girls tennis Again full uh underclassmen so the coach is excited about the upcoming Seasons she said a lot of the girls were new to the sport but stuck it out and competed at a very high level a couple of girls winning uh various medals at uh Varsity level tournaments so she was excited about those new girls that the girls were learning and loving the game so she's excited about

026the future track and field same thing uh full of low underclassmen so he's excited about building his program there as well and he's also excited about this the collaboration with what he's doing with a lot of other coaches and getting other kids to come out for multiple Sports throughout the season instead of being a one sport athlete and so he's excited about his upcoming freshman this year um he had a couple kids who had some personal records and they're both professionals so he said the future is bad for not only for the track team but the cross-country team as well so a lot of these kids are were actually after I was at the high school today they were already out on the field training with coaches getting ready for a cross country so it's

027exciting uh boys swimming we had a good mixture of seniors and underclassmen so he's excited about these uh this freshmen coming in or this freshman this past season as far as they were eager to get on into the pool and learn various type of swim techniques as they were new to the swim and our seniors showed very well in League competitions a couple missing regionals by disappoint uh Point tens of a second you know so that's how head of swim was last but not least girl soccer I'm going to touch a little bit on them that I'm going to ask are both our coaches to come up and really share the highlights girls soccer had a great season team went undefeated in League Play only lost one game during a regular season that was a

028nail biter you know a lot of young Talent on this let's go with this team you know so we lost a few seniors but we got some young some young kiddos coming up that the future is bright the girls team won the 2003 Colorado League Championship so we're excited to come around uh probably around the winter sports season to put up their banner and have a little special uh Banner signing for them as well as the boys basketball team so it was a great season so before I have that come up uh coach Beau our headset girl soccer coach was also named coach of the year for uh uh the Colorado league so it was a great honor just do those girls coming out there and playing great soccer and you know coach Beau you

029know what person she told me was I couldn't do without my my assistant coaches and just a great niche of coaches that care about these girls and as you see you know she has her her twin boys here and they're a part of her soccer family too and then there's games where she had her boys there and you see parents in the stands hold watching her after her babies and she just created a great family on her team so I'm excited so Coach Bo coach tripler if you uh come on up please foreign [Applause] for your hard work this season and just preparing these girls every day and getting them excited to come out and compete so here you go your coach of the year for the Colorado League [Applause] so uh our sophomore uh

030Amy she won player of the year I believe she scored 32 goals this season um uh and it was great because I think before that it was we had another individual who scored around 20 something goes as a sophomore and our team's is killing it and they're having they're doing a great job and it's all due to this leadership of our coaching staff that's in the building with them every day so kudos to them [Applause] oh yeah thank you uh for everyone's patience um with my kiddos um uh just a couple of things about our team we are 18 girls uh two freshmen seven sophomores three Juniors and six seniors uh that 18 is made up of two goalies five forwards five midfielders five Defenders and one what I call Jack of all trades who

031played every position on the field except goalie as Mr La Cruz said uh the girls were able to come first in the Colorado League being undefeated this is the first time in school history uh that the girls team has won conference and to do it undefeated is I think something that will be in the history books for a long long time our overall record put us third out of 57 in the 5A Colorado standings um we scored 77 goals 65 were assisted we had 486 steals where we were actually able to win the ball from the opponent uh 348 shots uh 256 of those on goal which is a 70 on goal percentage which is really really high um and we only allowed 22 total goals against us uh and then math 11 of the

032I hate math I like Words um and only nine of those were in the postseason so um in League Play uh we did really really well uh 14-2 overall record we had seven players named all conference and three players named to the All-State team as well as several players to the all-academic team uh and as uh coach said uh Angelica Quintana argoli she was named to Allstate Janessa Mendoza a uh junior midfielder was named to Allstate and uh I can't I'm just gonna say Amy because I'm not good at saying her full name amarani uh vidana was also named Allstate um including four other players that were named into all conference uh and so I'm just really really proud of this team and I kind of knew that it was going to be something special

033um after being off last year for uh maternity leave and I knew I had to come back and graduate this group of seniors and bring in our underclassmen and I had a great coaching staff with me so thank you to my assistant coach who's helping me with everything uh Brian e striffler and also our level JV coaches uh Brenda Moreno and a past player who graduated in 2018 2020 sorry um and that is Miriam Dominguez she came back and joined the coaching staff this year so I just really love the community and the team and I look forward to those girls earlier who said that they were going to be coming and playing soccer too so thank you very much um as real quick before they come up take a picture their their goalie uh

034you know sorry so uh she's one of my senior kiddos really got to know her as well to see her right now so they they made it to Regional this year and they were real excited because we were scared that they weren't going to make it uh when scheduling uh for teams there's a lot that takes into consideration your your strength of schedule and schedules are made a couple years in advance so we did make it and unfortunately didn't come out in our favor um we it was what was the score 9-0 but what was we didn't win but the A.D from that school called me and just gave in a high praise um he said she played her heart up she uh a great kid she said that's a level intensity she brought he

035said she stopped more than she allowed he goes and she played her butt off so I'm excited friend how can her future she's going to Trinidad State she received her scholarship for wrestling in her first year of wrestling up girl wrestling at Adam City High School and she also got a scholarship for soccer so she'll be a multi support athlete at Trinidad State that's coming fall so excited to go continue to watch her and uh to see her grow up there and of course you know probably being her you know some some gifts since my son as well I'll be going up there to Russell as well so I'll be spending the next few years with Angelica watching her playing soccer as well as uh wrestling so kudos to her um so if the team

036would like to come up and take a picture with their coaches foreign [Applause] overall you know this year was a great uh working with my middle school ladies we did a lot of collaboration getting the Middle School sports to the high school if not to watch an event to participate or they would play an event at the high school and working with them to also meet the coaches the coaches to talk to the students and encourage them to come out to high school sports you know uh throughout throughout the whole school year we had six coaches named coach of the year for uh for Adam City High School um that was coach Sarah Quintana first softball Billy Jones for boys basketball James Rogers for girls basketball coach bowl for girls soccer uh Jared Aguero for

037uh National Wrestling Hall of Fame Colorado chapter coach of the year and Coach Dave Gutierrez uh youth coach of the year he's one of our assistant coaches at Kearney middle school for wrestling as well as various Sports here in the in the community you know um on top of that 12 of our kids are going on to college up to play sports you know I could have been around 17. some of them decided that you know what their their playing Days Are Over the student injuries or wanting to focus on other things you know so excited about these 12 kids going on and to see uh as I tell them there's you know they're the role models we want you know next year we want to double that we want these kids you know as

038much as I love Commerce City let's get them out there to experience the world and then come back and continue to serve our community you know they'll serve our community when they come back and experience life you know so I'm excited to see where we go from here and uh as we collaborate as a district and as the middle schools and the high schools and the coaches come together to build something brighter and future for our students here so excited about that so overall great season uh before I came here we already had we have the football team out in the football field with seven on seven track was there baseball was there practicing and softball was out there so we're already gearing up this summer we're already going and uh we also have boys

039basketball and girls basketball going in the morning so it's a packed building already so excited and we're getting ready to roll into the next season so thank you for having me in your time [Applause] all right Madam Madam members of the board I have a couple um short updates as well but before I I go to the shorter ones um I would like to um highlight a visitor that is here virtually um missaline Rosenthal um modern president you will recall that we have been um partnered in working with a potential partner to to bring supports literacy programs for students in our community not only for students enrolled in our schools but actually for every child who lives in our attendance Zone starting with students being zero years old to pre-cray to pre-cray Pre-K grades and

040uh and Beyond so um you will be considering this um later tonight but I just wanted to bring an update we're very excited and very thankful to a very generous donation from Mr Sam Rose who who is supporting us with this program for the school and we presented to the Commerce City Council a while back about this program so we're all very excited and looking forward to it because it's you know something that is going to be phenomenal for our community Mr um Miss Eileen I don't know if you would like to you know say hi or or anything that you would like to share thank you so much first of all may I ask can you hear me okay yes perfect perfect well first of all I want to let you know how much

041I admire what you are doing in Adams 14. the ability to really break down the four walls of the school and reach into the community is something that's going to be a model not just for Colorado but for the nation um as you might have heard I am out of DC and already um there is a very generous philanthropist who is so interested in the idea of creating equity in the way that you're doing it and in a bilingual way that he's offered to he's provided a grant for some of the work that we're going to do in creating this Collective impact model that's going to unite the entire Community around literacy so I just want to tell you how excited we are to um hopefully begin our work together um I know that you're

042going to see wonderful results and I just thank you for uh in advance for any support that you give us um it's going to be a wonderful wonderful um program so thank you so much thank you Miss Eileen um so uh yes we are very excited uh this pending your approval and consideration this will include opportunities for parents at literacy University uh for play date for our younger ones for the ability to access quality books online that are in English and in Spanish with read alouds and just a lot of opportunities for students especially our um zero through four years old students to have access to high quality material so we are very excited and as we continue in our efforts to ensuring that all of our students have access to Opportunities and and high

043quality books we we're excited to um to potentially partner with with them in this effort so I uh our next my next update very quickly we met with cognia earlier this month we continue working with cognia today well throughout currently working with cognia as we explore and look build and ensure that there are systems to monitor any infrastructure any framework any system or protocol that we have that will ensure there is continuous improvement in our district in all areas so we are very excited to continue the partnership in exploring this with them um we're also excited about the Academy's work that our team has has endured in it made I mean it has been really um it has been a marathon because in a very short period of time there was a huge engagement from

044a community from our students our parents in what they wanted to see in the academies and I am very pleased to announce that we are on on target we are on schedule to open uh the the doors of the academies next year with 91 percent uh as of probably last week so maybe that has changed 91 percent of our incoming ninth graders from the two middle schools enrolled and registered in one of our academies they're excited so I just I just want to thank the team for for that work and one more opportunity that we have to really provide our students with opportunities in high quality activities and and learning experiences for them part of that is also the expansion of our social emotional supports and services so we're working at all levels elementary middle

045and high school on that that is one of the primary goals and objectives from the work of our strategic planning group the families we've heard it from students Community from the board so I'm very excited about about that work and um lastly Pre-K enrollments we are opening our opportunity for all three years old and four years old students to come in and have a full day Pre-K opportunity for them we have currently 159 three-year-olds three years old students registered and we continue having more that are coming on the wait list now and we have currently 294 years old students registering I will have space for a few more before we start putting four years old on a wait list as well but we are very excited because at this time last year we had less

046than half of the students registered for pre-k so we are expecting that we're gonna double our numbers and offer pre-K in every Elementary School moving forward I'm starting next year so those are my updates Madam president thank you so much Dr Lydia um thank you to our guests from footsteps to Brilliance for joining us um I am super excited about the academies uh rolling out and I'm so pleased to know that so many of our students middle school students already enrolled and ready to go um we got to see some some pictures from our continuation events if any of you were able to join those and to see the great way that the staff put together that event but to see the students open up their envelopes like acceptance letters and their eyes and they

047were sharing you know I got in the school and then they got to go to the back and get some items for their specific academies and it was just great so I'm excited about that and then I'm also excited um for all of the enrollments in our Pre-K um I think that's something so huge and needed in our community um which again I hate to put it out there but that's why we harp so much on um that need it is something that is very much uh displayed and evidence in our community and I'm excited that we get to have that opportunity at each of our elementary schools next year that's a lot of work so thank you to staff for for all that you're doing to get that going awesome um board members I

048know I talk all the time any questions comments great thank you Dr Lydia oh right [Laughter] yes next on the agenda is our budget presentation um Dr Lydia would you please introduce this item thank you madam president members of the board for a moment I panicked because I thought it was part of my updates but then I remember was a separate item so I would like to ask our chief finance officer Mr Doug Moss to come forward we do have a presentation and hearing the feedback thank you students thank you students yes we're proud of you keep working hard um so what we have tonight Madam president um and members of the board community members is an overview of the budget process we are as as you know we are in the process right now

049of restructuring our central office It Is our commitment to ensure that three things happen as we consider how we move forward to better support our students the first one is that the board goals or ends are met you have a duchess goals you have um goals that are focused on students student growth student achievement and innovation in ensuring that there is sustainability of anything that we bring forward the second piece is to ensure that all resources are closer to our students we have been in in a declining enrollment pattern for the last 15 years maybe 18 years the demographer called it out many years ago our young families or kids are not having families or babies as you know probably as fast as we were when we were their age or soon in in our

050in their lives and that is resulting in a consistent decline enough enrollment not only here in in our district but also around Denver in quite Frank in Colorado and the third thing that we are looking at as we consider this budget in the restructure is to ensure that there is equity for everybody the way that we are establishing our processes to look at employees our supports where people are you know they're in the right seat providing the right support being very responsive to the needs of the families we the needs of of our community the feedback that we get from the board as as you represent your constituents the feedback we hear from principals uh from that this is the result of us listening to that feedback and organizing ourselves in a way that in

051ways that will provide the supports in in anything that is necessary for students it is a changing need all the time so we need to adapt to them so we have been restructuring central office uh at this point I think it's over two million dollars in Savings in central office uh 750 around 750 000 at the at the leadership level I'm not going to call that a savings because again we're ensuring that we are pushing down those supports and resources closer to our students and um and that is evident in the things that we're bringing forward so today is an overview as we continue with the restructure we're going to uh encourage you to consider adding a a study session before June 27th so that we can truly engage in deep conversations about this and

052Mr Moss is here um and he's going to provide an overview so that um not only new board members veteran board members but also the community understands the big picture before we go and dive into numbers welcome Mrs good evening uh Madam president members of the board Dr Lauria and the community that are out there listening uh this is just going to be a kind of a quick overview as to what uh we're at right now we are making changes daily to the expenditure side and trying to generate more Revenue as we go so see if we can get this baby to work yeah um so tonight is basically just an overview of the budget uh a work session possibly next week hopefully sometime prior to the adoption of the budget and the approval of

053uh the appropriation resolutions uh the authorization of a beginning or the fund balance usage if we need to the way it looks right now we are but hopefully we can get this balanced out a little better than what it showed here a week or two ago we're working day and night it seems like we were here almost missed the Denver game last night I got home for the last two minutes so oh man but I I hear I got to see the best part so well I'm right there with you I had meetings and I missed most of it as well so a little sympathy no so then in uh probably uh November December time frame we'll receive our audit we'll make adjustments to our budget if necessary uh then we'll submit a supplemental budget

054to you guys and we'll start the process December have it adopted in January if needed okay um fiscal stewardship that that is something that uh we uh as a team here and also you as as members of the board we are stewards of the public dollars we we have to we are bound by laws rules and regulations as to how we spend the money um we are constantly under a microscope as you can say and we try to be as transparent as possible and so you know results in programs we try and beef those up and like Dr Lauria said um yes we are cutting in some areas but it's going right to our students and that's the people that need this these dollars so we are trying to be watching our our spending on

055a monthly basis uh quarterly we have to come to you and and by law and and give you an update on revenue and expenditures and funds so um within the District budget overview we try to align our vision and goals to you guys's goals um we allocate on a multi-year basis there's some contracts out there that are multi-years so we have to have to provide those dollars as needed um yeah and we we try to communicate our financial strategic plan as much as possible to you guys because you guys are the ones making the decisions for the district it's not us um Dr Lauria she brings it to you guys you approve or disapprove and then we move forward there again uh state law requires us that the school district submit a balanced budget sometimes

056we have to use fund balance to make that balance work um and and we uh by a policy within the district we have a five percent Reserve that we have to have we are over that amount so in the near future within the next five years we'll be having meetings on a yearly basis as to how much you want to use on that fund balance do we want to bring it down and increase for academic uses um so yeah we try and maintain at least over that five percent and there's also the three percent paper Reserve that we have to maintain as well within the school Finance formula this this last year um this is what uh the wonderful legislators decided to give us this year and it pretty good um it could be better

057of course but they uh the inflationary Factor was eight percent and we have but should have received more but because of our declining enrollment it takes it away so we probably would have had about two 2.5 million dollars more but with the decrease in funding of students it took it away they did generously finally buy down 180 million dollars worth of the budget stabilization I call it the negative factor um for Adams 14 that was almost 1.5 million dollars that they bought out so we received 1.5 million dollars more which was good and then remaining for Statewide there's 141 million dollars left Adams 14 we have about 1.1 million dollars that they took away this coming year next year they're proposing that they're going to wipe it out so and then we're anticipating over the

058next 5 10 15 years hopefully they don't bring that thing back and we'll be at zero so we'll be actually getting kind of fully funded again so if we can get our numbers for students to increase we'll be a lot better off um for uh this school year compared to uh next school year next school year where we should receive around 11 11 342 dollars per student last year it was ten ten thousand one hundred ninety eight dollars so this year an increase of 1144 dollars per student we should receive now if we get more students that's just going to help us out more so we've got to really focus on trying to bring our students back and get them away from the charters or even leaving um our funded people count for the 23

05924 years projected to be at 5 516. which this last year we were at 57.82 so you can see where that 266 comes into play because of the State Board of Education orders that were granted to Adams 14. um some of the impact that it's caused this year's budget to go kind of that's where we're really fighting is the tntp multi-year contract we spend 1.8 million dollars a year so far so we've budgeted 1.8 million dollars there we had a substitute program because we couldn't find teachers or subs or anything else so we spent 2.9 Million Dollars this year and we're projecting hopefully it's going to be less than that um we Implement we're implementing the full day kindergarten and also the academics academies for Lester Arnold and Adams City High School and our middle

060schools so that's another increase of 2.2 million dollars that we've never had to do before and then mid-year this year we couldn't find teachers then so we had to hire a company to basically do online and they were the teacher and we had to put an aid within that room so it was costing us the company plus an aid to teach our kids online well that's another 495 000 that we spent so a total this this last year and probably in the near future is going to be around 7.4 million dollars that we've never budgeted before so that's some of the kicker and that's some of the hard hard facts that we're just having to deal with right now but we're going to get through it um our general fund revenues are projected to be

061around 78.3 million dollars for next school year it's broken out into the local revenue and our local revenue is our property taxes these are taxes that are assessed to our community members uh a mill Levy override that we also have within the community and some license plate fees which are uh Esso taxes we call it and finance and then there's some interest in miscellaneous things that make up that that 47.31 number there um our next big item is our state revenue that's our state Equalization and our categoricals or categoricals or our help of funding are 20 percent of special ed which should be more um preschool the new preschool funding that we'll be receiving and uh and transportation and some little minor ones like gifted and talented and we don't get a lot of money

062there but and then our next one is our federal revenue and that's our impact Aid fees those are fees that because of the Arsenal we can't build and so we can't get any property taxes so the federal government gives us additional Monies to offset what we probably could have received and if there was buildings or housing being developed out there to help us generate taxes but there's not so that's just kind of an Ops offset to help us our total expenditures that 88 million has basically gone down a little bit we're still working on that and that's why it's just a projection right now so don't hold us to this but you can see by program like instructional services for example they're uh 47 percent of our budget which is quite a bit normally it's

063not that high but we are focusing on our instructional side of the house more than we are on other areas so you can kind of look through their instructional staff as our next highest at 12 percent pupil services at six you can see most of that pie is probably over 50 55 percent of instruction and that's huge for a district our size and I'm proud to say that uh I really support the instructional part and I like seeing this because a lot of schools it's way opposite and you know we've done some changes here in this building that's dropped substantially and uh here in the next day or two we'll actually know exactly how much that dropped so and we'll bring that to you at the next work session and update everybody on that so

064you could see that how total expenditures are broken out salaries are 61 percent of our budget district-wide and 18 so you're looking at 82 percent of our budget is salary and benefits which is about average for everybody um everything else is pretty much about the same purchase services or were pretty high there but that's in all the contracts that we have to do because we can't get a special ed or nursing or anything like that so that's that's a reason one big reason and another thing is the state mandated board fees that are built in there as well so that's huge so you take seven million away from there it's quite a bit less so that's something we'll focus on um you know with with the way the budget looks now at expenditures we're at

06588 it's less than that because it's changed daily so right now we're about a 10 million dollar shortfall so but we'll adjust that and get that down further so in some of the underlying assumptions for the next five years we're hoping the negative factor goes to zero and stays constant um pupil enrollment you know hopefully instead of us losing two to four hundred kids per year we start gaining some students back and that that will I want to see that because I'd love to go to the demographer and say see we showed you we can do this and we can change this whole place around so we're working on it we're getting there and then you know we're already seeing the effects of the stimulus funding um it's going to go away here shortly we've

066taken everybody that was funded in staff wise out of there and that's kind of adjusted some of our numbers in the general fund so we'll we'll keep updating you on that as we go we do have our retention coming up next school year and we're using a lot of that funding to retain the people that stayed here and give them a little benefit and what's left we'll come back to you guys and say how would you like to maybe there's a million left how would you guys like to spend that million dollars within the how we can do it on within the grant future discussions [Music] um we are going to have to make if it keeps up like this we're going to have to cut and there's no ifs ands or buts about it

067that's that's our biggest part of the budget so people are going to have to you know hopefully we can get revenue generated again and so we don't have to do that but we have to decrease our expenditures and hopefully once the safe board leaves us alone if I can say that then maybe uh that seven million dollars can offset the cuts that we would have to make our fund balance we'll just look at that you know by policy maybe we look at policy every year and say do we need five maybe we only need four and we use those dollars to help with the instruction and academics of our students and I think that would be money well spent um we're constantly looking at new revenue streams I have to say our federal programs director

068has written more grants than I can ever imagined and some were getting some we don't you know they're competitive but I got to give them kudos to that department for what they're doing some of the other funds within the district the main fund is their General funding we have a nutrition fund designated purpose Grant fund Student Activity fund Bond Redemption fund certificate of participation fund and capital reserve fund and I'll just go through those real quick within the nutrition service fund it's an Enterprise fund operating providing goods and services to our students from our primarily through user charges and accounts of all Financial operations some of the things we're looking at this year there's the healthy free meals for all we already give that but hopefully within that program The Food Service program is anticipating

069of generating about 600 000 more in revenue for that fund that would be phenomenal for us so we're really looking into that the Medicaid certification and how they certify kids you know we'll do applications this year but then the following year it'll be a whole census Medicaid SNAP program and we won't have to go through that process anymore um So within in the budget you can see we're about a little over four million dollars in Revenue that we receive um we haven't had to transfer any money thank goodness yet to the Food Service program from the general fund and hopefully with that six hundred thousand dollars more it'll just make it bigger and stronger the designated uh purpose Grant fund that has changed while we're speaking because we are getting our grants in now um

070when we put the budget together we're about 4 million we are I'm proud to say we're probably about 17 million dollars now in Grants and uh that we'll be using it'll be cares Act with Within These funds for the grant you write the Grant and however you write the grant that's how you spend the money you can't like yes sir I just can't go out and buy a new car or something for the district it's got to be specific and and related to that Grant so we'll keep working on grants and uh increasing that fund as well um so yeah this graph will desperately change the next time we present it'll be in the 17 18 million dollar range and it is all pretty much Federal there's a little bit of State in there but

071very very little people activity fund this fund is basically used for all Financial transactions within each of the school buildings whether it be a PTO and uh you know activities schools clubs however they raise their money it's not our my I always say that yes we have to take care of it for them but we can't tell them how they're going to spend their money in their activity fund so the kids raise the money or the the staff raises of the money and they decide how they want to spend those dollars and so I love that I don't want nothing to do with it and so I just stay out of it and we have seen within that fund when covet hit there was maybe six hundred dollars raised you know nobody was doing anything

072now it's starting to rebound back to where it's more like three four hundred thousand dollars that these students are raising for their own benefit for clubs or sports or whatever so yeah that that'll change hopefully in the next year or two as well and uh let's go on to the next one our bond Redemption fund this is the fund that uh we pay our PR principal and interest on property tax from the property taxpayers for the bonds to build the high school to also to any of the other projects that were allocated for those bond funds um so there's there's really no expense to it it's just principle and interest to pay off the bonds and that's it so we're looking about a little over 6.2 million dollars that we uh pay for the bond

073fund each school year dop fund which I call the certificate of participation fund this fund is a Debt Service fund and it is another you don't raise taxes per se to pay this this is kind of another lease type payment that when you built also you need an additional like four million dollars so you got this cop Bond type thing and it's paid from the general fund and so um we pay the principal and interest each year and it's a little around 488 thousand dollars that we budget and it's about the same amount every year and it won't change until we get it paid off and I think we got I want to say five more years to go I think so we'll we'll get it down and knocked out here shortly capital reserve fund

074this is for all of our Capital needs in the district we need more than the four million we need like I don't know 127 million dollars to fix up our schools we'll work on that but this is used to do equipment purchases uh uh boilers uh flooring where to use the money for the 5B movement we're having to do playgrounds and furniture for the preschool program that's coming up because we had to revamp some schools um there's parking lots and included audio visual um lease payments because there were some leases out there that we are having to pay off one's going away it's our White Fleet lease and I wish they wouldn't have done that so we won't be looking at that anymore um and then equipment so we got it Chromebooks uh tons of

075computer stuff there's freezers for some of the schools one freezer went out at one of the schools a repeater some safety issues are involved in this as well we have a repeater that we need to put up at the high school because we can't talk to the high school and we can't even talk in here to ourselves on radios so just things like that you know when they had the tornado warning here a few weeks ago people were running around telling people hey you got to go downstairs you got to go downstairs because there's no way to communicate within the building so we're working on that we'll get that repeater put in and so basically you just see right there we generate maybe a little bit of Revenue locally um we had we sold some

076certificates of participation stuff and we received some additional dollars it's not a lot but normally it's from the general fund so hopefully in the near future we can get together get with the community get them involved get a bond going maybe even a mill Levy override and and start taking care of our facilities because they're so old we need to do something um our next steps and I'll wrap up here shortly so what we're doing right now is we're updating on a daily basis the proposed budget we'll bring that to you on the 27th for adoption we'll have a work session in a week or right prior to the board session so you guys can really dive deeper into this on especially on the salary side because I want to get deeper into that um

077and then we'll see what the audit does in November December and then if we have to if it's necessary we'll do an an amended in January of 24. and that is as long as it's been so if there's any questions I would be happy to answer tonight or you can email or reach out to Dr Lauria and we can answer them and get you more information if you need so board members questions comments um you know I can't move on without saying something I do want to thank you for splitting up such a large project into pieces like this I think at um seeing the graphs hearing you explain what each part is in relation to really helps with our public transparency but also us as individuals to understand what's going on in the budget

078um and I I think digging into it in increments like is something that I could see us implementing a process like this for future years because I think it would be really helpful because it's just so much to do all at once so thank you [Music] um I think I'll save a lot of my questions for when we dig into things because I know this is changing um I think one of the questions I I did just want to um have you address was when we're talking about our continuously uh decreasing enrollment we're still using that five-year average correct but there are other things that we have to report the exact per year yeah we have to show exact The Five-Year average is still going on but unfortunately one of our big numbers one of

079our 600 student numbers goes away okay and so now it's going to be focusing it's more good instead of us getting more money it's going to be less and less and less and so we really got to strive and try and focus on generating more more students to attend awesome and then I think um with Doc we did Implement a lot of um we're trying to get funding wherever we can so I know we um did a great push with the free and reduced lunch feeling getting um the forms filled out and making sure our family unders families understand the importance of getting that information one thing uh for this coming Year's budget CDE is saying oh you guys are only going to get about 3 500 kids well last year we had like 4

080800 it was like almost 90 percent so I was like okay CDE what do you think is going on we're still going to go out and and Hammer the streets and and get these orgs brought back in so I wanna I don't want to throw it in their face but I do I I think we as a community can go out there and get those forms again that'll increase some additional funding as well for us it's educating our community and getting them involved um I did think of one last question because I'm on the same side um with regard to our um relief funding are we pretty well spent we didn't have to give any of that we're not going to give any back that that's why I said once we get done with the

081retention bonuses and stuff we're giving whatever's left we're going to come to you and say we got 500 000 left or we're down to twenty dollars how do you want to spend it we're going to spend it we're not going to give it back to the feds awesome I think it would be really helpful um to show what we've spent that money on because I know I commend you guys for spending all that we we had and then it built us up with all these supports and now we have to figure out how to continue what we can yeah all right that's all the questions I have so far thank you well thank you have a good night me too thank you influence that sorry all right next on our agenda is approval of consent

082items 6.1 through 6.6 may have a motion to approve the consent agenda items motion to approve okay thank you Ramona roll call please Mr Amador hi this is Estrada Ms Lovato here's I here's Molina I is Zubia she's also excused uh that passes unanimously um just to review um we did approved Personnel actions um we also approved purchasing two boilers for 7133 East 73rd Avenue we also approved monitoring reports um we did hear about those during our last study session um and I encourage the public they are under public content if you want to read more and learn more um they are there for your viewing um all right next on the agenda is uh business item 7.1 the approval of the 20 23 24 student calendar with a delayed start every Thursday um this

083delayed start will allow educational staff time to review student data qualitative and quantitative and plan lessons that meet individual student need in addition a late start will allow educational staff the opportunity to receive professional development complete student analysis engage in professional learning communities practice their lesson delivery and receive feedback from colleagues thus providing a positive impact on student achievements may I have a motion to approve the 2023-24 student calendar with a delayed start every Thursday a motion to approve any discussion no I think it's going to be great for him thank you um Dr Lauria did you want to add anything to that um yes Madam president members of the board and community members this is in response also on the feedback that we receive from teachers from administrators working with our partner we were

084using Esser funds to actually purchase additional planning time for teachers they will have double but as we know as a funds are going away and but we saw Great Value um in great feedback herd great feedback on that extra opportunity to plan so one of the things that we were not able to to achieve last year was to uh even with this additional planning time for um for teachers to have a common time for special education teachers clde teachers and homeroomteachers come together to look at data from the three lenses all at once so this will provide that extra opportunity for for our teachers to support our students so we are we're excited we worked with our as I said our teachers are our unions labor principles to really come with a uh with a

085schedule that will allow that Weekly planning for teachers the goal is every Thursday we're going to dive deep and teachers will dive deep into planning for not only the week after but also but two weeks down the road so we're going to be providing time for our principals to to be well prepared before um they they have their students so um there's going to be opportunities for uh some learning of alike groups as well from different schools to visit each other's schools to model lessons it's going to be phenomenal we're very excited both labor administrators and Leadership we're excited about this and we're going to be monitoring the um you know the growth that we're having or our teachers who are going to be monitoring the impact that this blog is having on our students

086so we'll adjust accordingly um I do have a logistical question how this is for all grades correct are we providing um before or I guess care um for like our elementary students for those hours prior yeah yeah okay I'm sorry yes Mom I'm sorry go ahead no that's okay I was excited to tell you you know what I meant yeah yes so this is going to be a regular um we selected two hours because our communities used to having one or two hour delays based on weather and it's just easier to say instead of seven o'clock it's going to be nine o'clock that figuring out 90 minutes uh so it's going to be like a normal uh two-hour delay for weather on Thursdays buses will go home two hours late but we will have opportunities

087at the at the schools to have um care for students for families who um who need that and it's going to be for everybody we are and I'm going to put it out there because this is a discussion that we are having with principals we're looking at research um working with our partners to re-examine early in the fall the start time for secondary students based on research and the evidence that additional hours of sleep for our high school students is going to be highly or is highly beneficial for them so we're going to be looking at at that early in the fall so that we can start communicating as soon as possible but um I just wanted to put that out there because there may need to be a adjustments for secondary next year thank

088you I just want to thank staff and our calendar committee I think was involved all of it in all of this work um to me I think the continuous learning and continuously improving the way we support our students is something that we'll we'll see the benefits of really quickly I think all right um we have a motion and a second Ramona can you conduct roll call please Mr Amador aye Ms Estrada Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina aye Ms Zubia it passes three to zero with directors Estrada and Zubia excused next on the agenda is 7.2 approval of contract with footsteps to Brilliance um Dr Lydia did you have any background information you wanted to provide on this [Music] um the only thing that I can add aside of the updates or what I mentioned during

089the update is that we are looking at if you um you know depending your approval looking at engaging with with the board with our administrators Community to start um launching this program uh it's a program um that will bring the Innovation piece not only to our schools but also as a city and how we work together with our partners with a sponsors with individuals who are interested in what is going on in Colorado out of state individuals that actually are philanthropists that have never supported schools in Colorado interested in this so we are excited about about the opportunities there's going to be a campaign a media campaign that will go out training for teachers we actually have started training for our Pre-K teachers who are using some of the programs so the the teachers piloted

090at the early grades Pre-K specifically piloted this program to see how we would work for a community how the books that were in Spanish were engaging families and the feedback was was phenomenal so we are excited to to continue moving um this especially in particularly excited about the parent uh training component of it because it's gonna it's gonna support our families and Empower families to continue supporting their students as well that's awesome thank you I know um we did make a joint presentation with them to city council I think this is a great uh opportunity for our students um quick question I know we're focusing right now on Adams 14 are we going to consider expanding in partnership with 27j or kind of include them in another way or are we starting here and then

091we'll figure out yes we're going to start here Madam president members of the board we're going to start here in Adams 14 but to be quite Frank um I think this has the potential not only to expand to our neighbors um but to um you know other districts outside of Adams County I think the research is very clear on the disadvantage that uh impacted communities have by the time the students start Pre-K there's already a gap in in the vocabulary in the comprehension and this having the component not only of training parents but also supporting students that are you know newborns even families that are about to have their babies and understanding that they can even read aloud to the kids or put the program to read to their babies as uh you know unborn

092babies it's it's going to be huge for our community so um the answer is yes we're going to start here with the hopes that we're going to expand even Beyond us because I think it's the right thing to do for for young babies birth through five yeah yeah and thank you for securing um the generous donation to get this started and I I know it's one of our huge goals is literacy within our district and this is um not only going to improve that it's going to do it in both Spanish and English and I think they had a few other languages that were involved in there but we had a demo on it if you guys have a chance to see it is um recorded on the December 5th of last year uh city

093council meeting where they demoed the games and the programs and it's it's just very robust and and very um exciting for our community yes and I want to take an opportunity Madam president to thank our um out of the 14 Foundation they have been working with us and securing these funds and the majority of the of the program is covered by um by our phenomenal donor and so thank you the foundation they've always been there for us and this is just one more example that they're here for our students wonderful thank you any further discussion or questions board members all right um may I have a motion to approve the contract with footsteps to Brilliance a motion to approve my broker please hi Mrs strata Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina hi is Zubia great again

094with the director's Estrada and Zubia excused that passes unanimously next on the agenda is our last business item the level for grievance consideration board members may I have a motion okay motion um I will continue then oh would you like that okay I moved to deny the level four grievance uh may I have a second oh second thank you uh Ramona roll call please Mr Amador hi Ms Estrada Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina [Music] thank you again with uh directors Estrada and Zubia excuse that passes unanimously uh next on the agenda is 8.1 Board of Education new business discussion um colleagues as you know we had a retreat on June 1st thank you all for taking the time to come in we discussed the pro the possibility of creating a new board goal focused on

095equity um in addition we talked about updating policy gp4e board self-assessment to include an equity evaluation and we also discussed changing the timing of the board evaluation has anyone thought any more about this or do you have any suggestions on how we move that work forward I'll start I have been undergoing a lot of training with school board partners and um in a previous life I also worked on um equity for teachers and students it was an initiative that was um the Adams 14 staff and board members participated in um through CDE and cea and so I think we have some examples that are local here in Colorado and around education Equity policies um and I would be happy to bring those forward and maybe we we talk about uh having them for first consideration

096during the next meeting we can review that work I also wanted to update the the larger Community we did talk about our board self-assessments and I think originally we we adopted a lot what was uh what we learned as a board through the policy governance training has be offered and we just felt that after every meeting assessing ourselves was a bit much so we did move it to be quarterly and more aligned to the other monitoring reports that we're doing so we'll bring that forward to make some changes to that a little bit uh down the road as well for me I think um that's all that I had around new business did anybody else have any anything they wanted to bring forward to talk about I think for me because of the Strategic plan

097that we're looking at and looking at the financials that Doug has provided with us I think we should reach out and see if we could find someone who can work with us to help us design something going forward so that we can propose something for the two middle schools to combine I know it's something we've been talking about and I think you know I think if we had a little bit of worked with someone that would can help us reach out to the community as well for some feedback on understanding why we're trying to merge the two middle schools and how to you know get some stuff that we need for our schools like he said we know 127 million dollars if to do any kind of upgrades or remodels to somehow sit down and

098work with the company that maybe can reach out to our community too to find out some of the other stuff um I know we've I've talked to a couple companies when we were at casby at the casby conference just to kind of put something together so that we can I mean there's not anything saying that we're not going to ask for something to build a new Middle School so we're going to need that support for the community and I think if we work with someone that can help us get that support as well so that they understand what we're trying to do when we're doing that especially with the declining and rolling numbers I think I had and know there's a couple companies we can reach out to you to try and get that moving

099forward especially if we know that's in the future because we've already voted that we want to do that here within the next couple years I completely agree with with you I think giving given the um forecasts that we just received and we have been talking about I think it's eminent that we're going to have to go out and seek money and I think we need to seek help in how to do that um because if I remember correctly I think with the approval to build the new Adam City High School um it barely passed it was like 52 I think or 53 and that took a lot of coordination and work from our students um and and so I think we need to start that work now yeah anytime do we need to put a

100motion or I think we're we're good discussing that okay okay wonderful great idea can I just of course yes uh congratulations to the Denver Nuggets yes 47 years we made history yes well director Molina I think that too yeah no that's a great thing um we're not taking action on it but that's awesome yes next on the agenda is 8.2 Board of Education committee reports um does anyone have any committee reports I don't think we were meeting because it's it's summer summer time yeah right no I have my meeting tomorrow so okay bye for the next uh meeting I can update okay awesome uh since director Zubia is not here she did ask that I share her information so I would like to go ahead and do that um Commerce City rotary is hosting their

101annual fundraisers they are selling peaches and pears so if you'd like to purchase them please get in contact with director Zubia uh they also have a golf tournament coming up on July 28th both of these fundraisers helped fund the Heart and souls Christmas shoe program which is an amazing program um I think um board members if you check your updates uh Ramona asked if we would like to participate in the golf tournament so please let her know I haven't played golf for a very long time but I might be up for it um the other committee reports um I have been we had a Commerce City urban renewal Authority meeting last night um we also had city council which is happening every week a lot of updates with that so I I would um the

102city council has done a great job of creating videos that kind of summarize the actions taken and I encourage everyone to go there I will do a better job of trying to prepare for those but it's a bit hard when we have them the night before a schoolwork meeting so um I will do better about updating on that um with nothing further next on the agenda is 8.3 other Communications from the board if you all have any I know we have a ice cream social for registration on the 15th yeah is that correct that is correct that will be the third one at the third registration um this month uh so we're working um diligently to ensuring that our families have access to you know easy registration and that has resulted in a lot of

103the Pre-K students that we have so the one on June 10th was highly successful so we're looking forward to having a lot of ice cream for June 15th for families to come in and learn the things that we're doing and register their students yeah yeah great event um I have a few sorry everyone almost done um I wanted to add a quick note that we are attending the school board Partners our Collective power events um I'm proud to say that we all received scholarships so it's not costing a penny to our our district and our taxpayers um but I wanted to um just provide an update this is a national annual conference that is designed to be a learning community of practice for board members so we'll have the opportunity to meet with board members

104from all over the nation um I wanted to thank School Board partners for providing me scholarships and then I also wanted to thank my fellow board members um for your dedication and commitment to continuous Improvement and learning I think um I've said it before a number of times but we we just have such a an amazing and strong collaborative board and I'm just so appreciative that you're always willing to travel put in time and and continue bettering ourselves so thank you all um I also wanted to announce that uh vice president Janet Estrada and I were selected to present at the Colorado Alice events uh this October which is the association of Latino administrators and superintendents so that's the national one not the Colorado oh yes because that's in San Antonio that's the national yes

105you are right um so we'll be going out there in October thank you for that another National putting Adams 14 on the map yes yes um and then on to putting us on the map for uh other reasons um I did want to provide an update um and a kind of uh Turn to You Mr salazars for um sharing but we in my opinion have a historic event happening next Tuesday uh the state of Colorado's Supreme Court has agreed to hear um about our our challenge to the state board and everything that's been happening primarily their order to reorganize the community so um I think it would be great if we show up um and I I would love if we could ask staff to um I don't know that a press release is necessary

106but just get the information out of when and where this is happening because um this is historic um regardless of the outcome um the other thing I wanted to bring up was uh it wasn't publicized a lot but we continue to be um on the state board's um Target I don't know another word to say a Hit List they did um it was a close vote but they did remove our exclusive Charter Authority um to me I think um it's really changed how objectively or taken away my objectivity of charter schools because as we talk about our declining enrollments um and and a lot of the talk is around us losing enrollments we're really not losing a lot of enrollments externally and compared to students that choice n the largest portion of that is to

107charter schools that are here and I find it very um I I just I've it's it's privatization at its finest that a small School District like ours is being targeted because it basically opened it right up um we did deny one charter school application that decision was upheld by the state but removing our Charter Authority basically allowed them to circumvent the system and go directly to the Charter School institutes and the same goes for you prep so if you see Communications I just urge you all to get involved uh know that um we're fighting the legal battle elsewhere and apologies in advance that we're not um communicating as much as I wish we could but some of it is purposeful you know yeah all that um that Kamala vice president Kamala Harris will be here

108on Friday and I was invited to be part I also am part of the environmental justice Roundtable or with the governor and uh environmental racism and environmental Injustice in Commerce City is on the table that environmental racism is in the classrooms um so I just want to add that so if you have a message for the vice president let me know before Friday I got something to say all right that's awesome um and lastly I did want to catch everyone up as best as I can on the reorganization committee work we did meet to review the first draft of a report that we would like to submit to the commissioner of Education um we are meeting again next week to be scheduled um so we will continuously keep you up to date on the actions

109of that committee all right any other Communications board all right uh this concludes our agenda for the evening uh thank you board members staff audience for your time this evening we're almost to the end of the year we'll meet again in June maybe a couple more times for some study sessions and a special meeting May I have a motion to adjourn a motion to adjourn good thank you Ramona roll call please Mr Amador aye Ms Estrada Miss Lovato aye Ms Molina I miss Zubia awesome thank you we are joined thank you everyone
