002victims students and staff at Denver East High School in the Covenant School in your thoughts this evening I pledge allegiance of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God and with liberty and justice foreign first on the agendas roll call Ramona can you please call roll Mr Amador here Ms Estrada here is Lovato Here Is Molina here miss Zubia here thank you um next on the agenda is approval of the minutes for the March 14th 2023 regular meeting may I have a motion so moved second Ramona real quick please I thank you and then last is approval the agenda may I have a motion to approve the agenda as presented motion to approve the agenda as presented I'll second who moved to oh hi Ms Estrada
003aye Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina aye Ms Zubia aye thank you next on the agenda is 3.1 April 2023 classified staff recognition one of my favorite parts of the evening uh Dr lodia would you please introduce the April uh winners that we're recognizing this evening absolutely Madam president members of the board community members um this is also one of my favorite parts of the board meetings where we are recognizing the efforts of Staff members that go above and beyond in that show day after day a great commitment to our students and they do it with a phenomenal sense of humor and attitude so today we're going to be recognizing three members they do get a uh 300 check in partnership with our one of our Founders and I just um Suncor thank you and we
004have Tony clocker is the first one who is the accounting clerk up to in the finance office is Tony here I thought I saw her before and also secretary from the Stars Early Learning Center not here and Mr clocker in unreal we do have some certificates here for them so we're going to make sure that they get them but Tony what they have to say actually and these are peers and people who work with them who nominate them Tony always goes above and beyond making sure our program has what it needs while staying within the District board policies Mrs clucker always responds promptly to emails or calls with such patience and grades for our district she's patient kind and her patience and kindness has always been present since my time here in Adams 14 and
005this is the person who is actually nominating her she takes the time to understand the swap contract to help support purchases and correct line item allocation never once in the seven years of partnering with Mrs clocker um she has ever seemed annoyed or angry at my questions or concerns Miss clucker is the biggest fan of our swap in transition students always the first to support our Enterprises she always knows the students by name and often remarks how amazing the students are doing at the coffee cart in this coffee cart our substudents they have a coffee shop a coffee card out here in the lobby so um quite often they come in here and that we are able to buy you know for a dollar coffee or tea or they sell snacks so it's quite fun
006Ms clocker knows I like to turn my P card in early so she grabs my UMB statement and emails me when when it arrives any request we have from the swap Department within reason and board policy responded and fixed immediately Mrs clocker is always aware of the changes in board policies forms and procedures and she not only protects our program but the district's Integrity as well for over the 20 years she's been on board so obviously uh very easy to deduct that it is the swap team nominating her for her for um her support to the team so we're going to make sure Ms clocker hears about this and also Anabel nades um is able to relay information and communication with staff students and families she has crucial she has been crucial during the universal
007preschool application process in answering questions from the families and guiding them through initial process the initial process Annabelle works with a team to plan or find solutions to challenges by sharing ideas or building upon others ideas she is one of the first to make viable suggestions that are efficient and ensure we have input from a variety of voices on the team she keeps a positive attitude and it's still able to bring moments of laughter throughout the busy day of the sea or season has the ability to make multitasking efforts appear seamless and is able to appropriately prioritize tasks she sees something that needs to be done in just does it without needing to be asked which is very much appreciated she wears many hats in our building and helps support the overall preschool program her
008experience in her role allows her to see the big picture of what we're working towards as well as thing as well as think through the details as well as see through the details that also need to be considered she has the trust of another of other team members to make sounds decisions for our students so once again going above and beyond committed and always with a smile because it gets busy and those miles sometimes just saves our little moments so thank you madam president for allowing me to bring this to classified employees forward for recognition thank you for bringing them forward and and telling us what their peers had to say about them that's I always learned so much about them about our amazing staff members um and since they're not here we don't get
009to take pictures but I get big pictures but we're going to tell them to come next time [Music] I would go and pick them up I'm gonna compare it honor to get what I needed and regardless she was always available and she has the nice effect taking her too so they I agree with everything that was said Thank You Annabelle and hopefully we'll see you again thank you is your mic your mic's not on directors and thank you to um all the other um classified staff that were nominated as well and thank you to miss clocker as well for all her work so thank you all right well thank you and um please extend our congratulations to them I will we have some um certificate yes uh next on the agenda we have uh item
0103.2 we're recognizing The Substitute of the month um again would you please introduce our April 7th of the month um we don't know that he's able to be here either but um um so we started recognizing also substitutes actually there's a lot of um individuals and groups that we want to recognize Michael Sawyer I don't know if he is here um but uh one of the um groups that we want to acknowledge also for their hard work is the group of substitutes teachers uh this is this is hard work you just go in you never know what it's going to be there for you and they come in with a smile and then their faces uh willing to support our students Michael has been a substitute with us since August of 2021 so he started
011right after covid when we are quite frankly eating them the most he has primarily worked at Kearney Middle School in since 2022 and always great staff and with excitement and positive attitude about throughout the day as a long time substitute of atoms for teen school district we greatly appreciate his continued effort and dedication to the community it is clarified that he was not able to be in here but um actually you walk into Kearney middle school and you will see him pushing a little cart with tweets and uh going around actually we met him with his card of treats going around with this for the students and staff saying how handsome they look how beautiful they look just just being positive and giving kudos to people for just wearing a hair bow or something and
012that was the day that we were also cabinet members we're going to all the schools this time was Kearney we're bringing cookies for for the teachers for the staff for everybody really classified and certified just giving them um you know cabinet we all went as a group just telling them thank you for the hard work they do and so we were joking with him you know he beat us because in his card he had like apples and all kinds of things and we're here we come with just cookies right but um just speaks about how in our district we are looking forward to always recognizing the good things that are happening so we'll make sure that he gets also a certificate in in his little bonus awesome it made me think of a previous stint
013too I don't know if we're communicating to our substitutes there is still a 300 new substitute stipend that UNC and the Colorado Department of Education offer and it's basically you serve a day being a substitutes teacher so in addition to their efforts to go above and beyond I hope we're sharing that information I just had to check to make sure it's still available are still going yeah and just to add to that for every substitute out there listening or if you know of any substitute who is interested in becoming a teacher we are putting together programs for them through different universities and most recently one through reach University um that is we're able to a very low cost that we could even as a district pay in exchange of a commitment to stay with us
014two years after graduation for substitute teachers to become teachers so we our HR department is really working hard on building our own so part of you know besides bonuses you know we can also pay for your tuition so Mary's listening out there you may want to come come back and teach yes that's wonderful well we don't get to take any pictures ladies and gentlemen sorry yeah um yes again please pass on our congratulations to them and um it does take a special person to substitute not knowing what you're gonna run into or or the lives you're going to impact every day uh next on the agenda is 3.1 the autism acceptance of the month Proclamation oh I'm sorry 3.3 um secretary Zubia would you please read the proclamation yes whereas the Center for Disease Control

019president Estrada I would like to thank you for your service as an assistant principal each and every day and then you come here and continue the workout on the 14th so thank you for all you do thank you all right uh Ramona roll call please Mr Amador aye Ms Estrada aye Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina aye Ms Zubia aye all right uh next on the agenda is audience comments um we do have three this evening um just want to remind everyone we have a three minute timer we we try not to push too much on that but please ask that you respect the the time for the consideration of everyone here um first up we have Sarah Wesley and Hunter fralick from the Adams City Middle School instructional technology team welcome good evening Adams 14
020Board of Education members we are the instructional technology committee at Adams City Middle School and we have a few specific requests from the Adams 14 Board of Education regarding student technology use first we would like to detail the issues that we have encountered related to students technology use currently there is no board policy around holding students or families accountable for technology misuse because of this lack of policy there is no way for the school to hold students and families accountable the cost of replacing broken equipment has fallen onto the school while many students are respectful with our technology and use it properly it's not always the case as such acms has now lost a high number of Chromebooks due to intentional damage this damage includes ripping off the keys scratching the screens breaking the computer
021in half throwing the computers in the toilet and other issues it's unsustainable to continue providing Chromebooks to students without an accountability system in place one of the Adam's 14 initiatives is to be fiscally responsible a lack of board policy holding students and families accountable for intentional technology damage goes against this initiative a possible solution to this problem would be to write board policy around student technology use most of the surrounding districts have policies in place that charge a fee when a student damages or loses a district-issued device other districts also offer Insurance programs to families to help cover the cost if a device is damaged or lost even the threat of having to pay or to replace a device is better than our current status quo this does not necessarily have to be a large
022sum of money but rather simply enough to demonstrate to students and families that it is unacceptable to purposely break technology that belongs to schools if writing board policy around holding students and families accountable to damage devices is out of the question our next request would be that the cost of replacing said devices should not fall to individual schools if it is the board of education's decision to not charge fees for damaged devices then the board and central office ESS should take the on that cost it is not fair to individual schools to tie their hands by not allowing us to charge fees while on the same stroke telling us that we have to pay to replace devices as of now students at acms do not have equal access to technology because all the costs have
023fallen onto acms we now have teachers signing out Chromebook carts when they need to use them however the system does not provide students with Equitable access to technology throughout their day in addition because of the Staffing crisis that has has adversely impacted acms half of our current stock of Chromebooks is reserved for the Elevate K-12 classes with testing season imminent computer access will be even more limited for in-person core content classes more importantly if we were trying to provide our students with the proper tools they need for the 21st century then each student should have access to Chromebooks throughout their entire day it is not Equitable when we consider keeping up with most other districts in the state it's also not Equitable among students within our district as the Chromebook systems and procedures differ from
024school to school we could very well have an elementary school student who struggled with handwriting but has adjusted to using technology to complete the written assignments move to their middle school and suddenly lose their I lose access to their one-to-one technology it creates inconsistency and if there is one thing we know in a district it's that our students Thrive with consistency each year please consider these requests as acms continues to provide our students with high quality education we want all our students to be College and Career ready by having equal access to technology respectively the acms instructional technology committee thank you so much uh next I would like to invite Aaliyah Acevedo up to the podium hi evening esteemed board members of atoms 14. um I'm just here today to talk to you all about
025the walkout that we had today at Adams City High School um we were raising awareness against gun violence as well as other issues in our community um and here I am today to ask you guys um to work with students um to improvise our lockdown standards um I know we had an incident earlier this year and it kind of fell on students and staff um and so I just want to work with our board to improve those lockdowns so our teachers don't have to worry about their students and our students don't have to worry about their safety so I'm just here to raise awareness of course I've set out those posters that we had today and I really want to thank the board for allowing this to occur and for supporting our students today and
026so yeah thank you very much thank you so much thank you thank you uh next Christy Douglas please join us the podium good evening everyone thank you for allowing me to speak and uh I am here to recognize Aaliyah he just spoke because she had the fourth rate thinking to organize the the walk out today and to recognize that we have a crisis with gun violence our own family has had that experience with our daughter being a teacher at Hinckley High School where there was a shooting in the parking lot we spent that entire afternoon we were on a tour for CDOT and we were not able to leave wouldn't have done us any good to go over there anyway however we spent the whole afternoon being traumatized and terrorized by knowing that our daughter
027was crawling on the floor across a classroom trying to figure out how best to protect her kids in that classroom teachers are teachers not because of the money they are teachers because they love kids and they want to protect them but how can they be in a position of being able to protect them when they're they're always worried about how that could happen at any minute and that the circumstances are always going to be different and that they're going to have to be thinking about how to protect those kids in those different circumstances and so for this Brave young woman who happens to be on our Karma City youth commission which I am the council one of the council Representatives along with council member Craig Kim I was the council rep for one year by
028myself no one else would step up to the plate and then when councilman member Kim was appointed he he joined me and it's been wonderful having him and and being able to learn from these incredible students who are our future we have to figure out some way to stop this madness and we all have to work together stop the hate if you hear someone remotely speaking in a vicious manner please stand up to them and and stop them if you see suspicious Behavior please stand up and put a stop to it we all have to work together these kids are our future and I want to thank you Alia for being the person that you are and being such a fearless leader thank you well thank you all for um being brave and coming this
029evening we don't normally respond to a public comment but I hope we stick around for the rest of the meeting and um hopefully board members will have something to say um next on the agenda is 5.1 superintendent Lydia's updates I'm Dr Lauria yes um thank you madam president members of the board whoops okay members of the board I I do have a couple of things on my updates and one of them actually was um the workout today or walk in I um was there this this afternoon when it happened and I just want to Echo you know the things that have been shared about the leadership of our students I was so proud and I am so proud of our of our leaders of Elijah and um just um to see our very gifted students
030demonstrate and bring awareness of something that they care about in such an organized and professional manner so this is what Global Citizens look like this is what a great communicators look like this is what critical thinkers look like and um so I do I just want to say also I know many of you were there actually all of you most of you were there and you were able to witness it but we will continue working with the students we will continue working with families and staff to really rethink how we do in and envision safety because it's no longer physical safety is emotional safety it is cyber safety it is also physical safety so thank you Aliyah Aliyah for for your leadership definitely we're talking about on cabinet how the district is going to be
031you know her district and you know all the students that we are we have in our schools in 20 30 years so certainly if the Future Leaders look anything like our students we're going to be in a much better place in 30 years I'm just saying because they were phenomenal the other thing that I wanted to give an update to you and the community I was invited by two national organizations knapsby is the National Alliance for black student schools Association and also Alaska Association of Latino administrators and superintendents to go to Washington DC and participate in a congressional briefing address I there were 100 superintendents invited Nationwide they were hand selected Nationwide and out of the 100 superintendents five were selected to actually provide an address in you know two Congressional staff I was one
032of them uh and I was very uh proud there just representing our narrative our story uh we had five as I said there were five superintendents including Miami-Dade Arlington Public Schools they were superintendents from Arizona there were 21 states represented and this is the first time since the Inception of the Nazi and the alas organizations to actually come together with one voice so this was a huge deal soon after two days later we had been invited also by the National Association National School Board Association to also do a presentation to tell our narrative and our story and we were there you you were there as we had been invited to go and present for for our district so we are changing The Narrative of our students we are working very hard to ensure that students
033like Elijah have a a different opportunity just because of how or what people will know us for and that is for um you know having lots of linguistically gifted students who will be a new a new breed of leaders that are well needed so the other thing I wanted to share is we are having work sessions for our parents Spanish-speaking parents specifically through parida this is something that the community had come to me several times actually before I got here I remember almost I would say now two years ago and I I was doing some research about the district before you know to go through the process of the superintendent search and remember looking at watching videos of parents asking for this kind of support and I'm telling you this two three years old already
034and that was not happening and they we started already we are partnering with them so paridad will be having sessions for um for our parents to really Empower our parents on how to ask questions at the schools how to advocate for their students understanding the the educational system to ensure that their students have also opportunities for um for you know studies After High School so the date is going to be from April 8th through May the 13th is going to happen on Saturdays from 9 to 12 30 p.m and 9 in the morning to 12 30. so I know they will be coming in to speak to you we already talked about that so it's going to be probably in May that they're going to be here sharing a little bit of the work they're
035doing so this is the first of several offerings that we are putting together to engage and Empower our parents as well and um I do have also well that's 845.1 because the other this one is coming now 5.1 so those are my general updates great thank you yeah I've seen many many social uh posts about paridad and thank you for bringing that because I um gosh I think it's been almost three years because it was one of our first meetings I don't even think I was elected to get um at Our Lady mother of the church that was hosted and they were asking for that because it's I believe based in Boulder is that based in Boulder there was a um a hefty research that our parents led to select who they wanted to um
036to bring up I'm gonna say I was very proud of listening to our parents it was a research well done in a presentation well done where they selected this group we are in conversations with them actually to rather than having them come because the groups are 25 between 20 and 30 parents but we are engaging with them also to start training trainers so we have parents training parents and and supporting other parents not an organization so that we can start building structures for sustainability so um it's it's quite interesting and the parents are very excited congratulations on all friends yeah um great um next um still under you Dr Olivia a strategic plan process um this is something that we've been very excited about um it's been a long time in the works um and
037so Dr Lydia would you like to give us an updates yes Madam president it's about 5.1 I think you're going my is not coming up my is a strategic plan but I have five point um this is misplaced so I guess it was still part of 5.1 the monitoring reports but I if you want I can do this one and then we'll go back there whatever whichever you prefer do you mind continuing on Five Point the previous one to make sure yeah yes yes because I just realized the other one is not 5.0 this is okay so um continuing with 5.1 superintendent updates um in a little bit of context for the for our community members and and um those out there listening the Board of Education adopted policy governance in February and as we
038move forward they're very specific ends or formerly called goals that the board has recognized and identified for our district you're gonna this group is going to hear a little bit about it during the strategic planning presentation that I have after this but part of those goals they're very specific um limitations that they give me and things that they are expecting for the superintendent to do and part of this governance policy is on there's a calendar that we are building for the year in every month they're going to be different reports that are coming to the board where I as a superintendent report the work that my team is doing in following those ends and staying within the limitations that you that you clearly provide for me so this is going to be our second month
039that we bring one I do have two monitoring reports to bring one is reported for executive limitation number eight school year calendar and executive limitation number 16 Financial Administration for the month of April all this expectations can be found in board docs we have an area in there and it can also be found in our website so if anybody would like to go and is curious about it uh today I'm going to be presenting one uh on a although I present in two for you to accept I will be providing an update uh with a PowerPoint on one of them um the second one for the financial Administration will further discuss this on um during the next executive not executive I'm sorry study session uh in two weeks so we're gonna um I'm presented it
040today but the presentation specifically only for el8 so this is the internal reporting for the school calendar and what I'm gonna do I'm I'm explaining the little the the few steps that I'm going to take in this presentation since we're starting here we're just getting to find our Rhythm and see if this is going to work for this way of presentation is going to work for the board um the the first few slides I do have the wording of the policy itself so it is known for although the board knows about it it's also information for the community and uh it basically says that the superintendent will not fail to provide an adaba District calendar not only for the district but also it could be for individual schools if if there's a merit for that
041there is a administrative policy that we have within the district that is policy that the superintendent owned under policy governance and that is very clear on the different steps so I will be sharing about those steps that we followed and um the there are six basic things that you have provided me you know in this executive limitations that must be in place as we follow the process of identifying or or approving and adopting or adopting an approving a calendar our first one is that I will not fail to take reasonable steps to allow public input so you will hear in the few slides the committee who was part of that the process the days that we met and also the work that we had with labor to ensure our teachers um you know through them
042also have input superintendent will not fail to take reasonable steps to provide copy of the calendar to parents or Guardians once it is adopted I will bring to your attention that this was adopted by the board in in January so this is explaining the process we had then uh the third um expectation or limitation is that a superintendent will not fail to give adequate And Timely notice to students parents and teachers specifically specifically 30 days before the implementation of the calendar um you know in that on the table in this case the calendar that you approved was for next school year 23 24 and also 24 25. inner legs light there are the other three expectations that you provide me as limitations I will not uh um or not fail to implement a school calendar
043that plans for more than 990 minutes um for student instruction at the elementary level in 1080 minutes for secondary number five I will not fail to implement or I yeah will not fail to implement a school year calendar although it sounds like a double negation will not fail to implement a school year calendar that provides for more than 160 instructional days I am happy to report that uh pair per hour negotiations with labor the maximum amount of days is over the 160 which is the minimum that we have from the state uh it's uh 165 days of student contact days these days we were at 165 a few years ago in about three years ago they were reduced to 160 but now we're back or 100 yeah 160 days but we are back to 165
044days that this will allow students to be or to have contact with our schools one additional week and we started that this year by the way not not for next year and our superintendent will not fail to consider a reasonable balance between instructional needs and the extra curricular obligations of the students so all this what I interpret this in the next slide is the district will be in compliance with statute State statutes that are very specific to the con to um to the calendar and taking care of a school year national holidays your duty to actually determine instructional days and have proven it like you did in January inward Duty or our duty to ensure that School attendance laws are followed meaning the minimum number of days next slide please and those are actually the
045statutes that I was speaking about next slide please so this was the recommendation that you looked at from January next slide uh the purpose to bring you uh back then was actually to be able to create a calendar that met the needs of our students and also support supported our teachers next slide are you you will recall probably seeing this infograph this is really research based on um you know first year teacher but I would say this is true for specially um you know teachers with less uh than five or even 10 years of experience uh based on Research that is noted below um you know the year starts you know with great anticipation uh very soon when we started when we started looking at the schools and this happens in every District right when
046we start looking at number of students maybe movements based because the teachers will follow the students for the staffing balances we get into a mode of almost survival and by October November there's great dissolution um there is um of feelings you know amongst our especially brand new teachers and we have a majority of our teachers below five years of experience we also confirmed this with some mental days or days that teachers were taken during this time we had professional days and we had a large number of absences during these professional days and uh that just was paired with the research that has been done nationally then by February March we started rejuvenating again we see the end coming spring break is here uh and then uh by May and June there's this uh reflection I
047see some of the teachers smiling probably they know exactly what I'm talking about and uh and then we go back in this in the summer to anticipate the next year just for us to start all over so uh like it was said before it's not for the money it's really because uh we teachers we love students and we wanted to honor this based on Research so our calendar our next slide um is ensuring that we are not only developing calendar that supports our um The District's transformation efforts that we have um but also supports the students and the staff so we worked on it earlier this year than in the past because we wanted to make sure that we had a calendar that was also going to be supporting Recruitment and Retention and increasing student
048hours days and minutes the way that we were able to do that next slide is bringing Community Committee members we had Parents District the doc members present classified and certified staff School District administration classified in certified unions department leaders of of all the Departments just looking at if our goal is to bring a calendar that will support our students The Needs school transformation ad contact days and support our brand new teachers all of our teachers really and staff we needed to put our heads together there were a series of meetings that happened following policy um next slide we use also this data that I shared before of uh personal days or staff absences during PD days I need to know uh professional development days or days in which we do not have students so this
049is not you know teachers being absent when students were here it's on those pity days next slide and um I guess the other slide is not showing here but we have the calendar that you approved in in January the calendar the very specific thing that this calendar has supporting teachers and students is we have two full weeks one in October towards November in another one in February March uh besides spring break that is actually supporting not only teachers you know in those low moments based on research and our own data on on um uh more frequent absences during PD days from teachers but also eliminated uh some days for comp time that we had for a parent conference parent-teacher conferences that we had one day off here one day off there to compensate the extra
050time of teachers we put all those days together so it's a it adds to a week right so we are not eliminating student contact days we're allowing teachers to take a longer time to regroup and rethink and recharge batteries and also using that time to plan fall camps winter Camps summer camps for our spring camps for students so that learning continues at that time we followed policy as it is described we will be having um and I aside to this policy as a superintendent I am will be looking at putting a committee together to review policies existing policies that we have to start determining if there are any changes that need to happen you will be informed of that but this is one of the policies that we will also be looking at um I'm
051open for any questions you may have board members question um I just appreciate the thoughtfulness behind um the um the visual of the roller coaster um as as an educator that is completely true and not only um I wish we could talk more about the reasoning behind it right like the read act windows and all of these windows that teachers and um sorry administrators have to add about abide by and so um the thoughtfulness behind that I really do appreciate I think that that will help with the retention and recruitment recruitment piece um yeah I thought that was great I second that I think it's really helpful that you're walking through the policy what your interpretation is and then presenting the report um I I would love if we can have those forward-facing in the
052public content area just so um folks could see how we're doing this um I think my one question is and and I'm sure you guys are considering it but what um what alignment is there in the consideration for the student absences like I I so appreciate that we're offering camps um to continue their learning but have you seen any roller coasters and in their attendance um that mimics that or or maybe um maybe it's something completely different um absences and we are paying close attention and monitoring absences at em at the different campuses but one of the things that we know it's true because we looked at the data those weeks that we had one day off for for example student conferences and then that last day to compensate for the uh additional hours of
053the teacher as part of the negotiation that they that week it was a short week those weeks we experienced a decrease in attendance so it's almost like kids are like okay this is a short week anyway so I'm gonna take off so one of the reasons that we um in in data that we brought to the table is there is a difference as a district in short weeks versus long weeks I think also parents in a short week will say well let's take one more day and then we extend it so that we can go and visit family who you know may live far or something so uh it was just an opportunity to just take one additional day and do other things that when um what that we did not see you know that
054that uh pattern in whole weeks that we had um also listening from feedback from teachers when you have a short week it's just a change in in the structure and in in your whole planning and a change for students and one of the things that for research in transformation students need is that consistency so we have too many weeks one short one day here and then it happens to be a holiday and then another day it's just disrupts the consistency of you know getting up in the mornings going to school and uh you know and having the five days you know in school um so with um the strategy of taking these random days that are not holidays of course but this random days into one week we're looking at and we're expecting to see
055a difference in student attendance especially those weeks in particular to the calendar there are other reasons that we're working on but specific to the calendar we brought that data using our District's data and research wonderful thank you um I think my last comment um and any kind of touched on it I I found as we're working through this process I'm starting to really dislike our our negative um executive limitations I I understand that they need to limit but I would love if the board can start reviewing our policies to say something positive like our superintendent will ensure or you know it just um it doesn't sit well with me so that's just one one little comment yeah yeah I I it does um sound funny even reading it it's a double negation uh but I
056uh what I do appreciate of that is that the clarity is and what I will not do because that is what you uh as a board know for sure I cannot you know fail to provide Acts or I cannot fail to look and abide to to the laws that provides a lot a lot more flexibility to the team to to be creative and uh you know take some risks with some in in Innovation you know strategies or Innovative strategies um to to continue serving as our students differently uh certainly uh cannot be done the same way we've done it for years um and uh so it does sound uh weird but uh as a superintendent I do appreciate the clarity and you can do everything as long as you stay with his these limitations right
057so I I I do understand that double negative but in the day-to-day operations and planning and and um implementing what we want to implement it does give us great flexibility knowing what the red zones are that we cannot go yeah I think um I think as we continue our training with Cosby and and CDE um we talked about options that weren't that kept the same guardrail approach but weren't so but just a word that is the way it's kind of designed yeah at that day negative that's what we went through all the training it is that didn't have that there is but they talked about keeping it this way because it works better because once you get into those options it it does sound better but it doesn't it doesn't do the same thing right
058it doesn't create the guy rails so that's why they keep it negative if you look at most of the Committees that do it they have them as negatives it works better that way and that's how it was designed um does this mean that uh we're only doing one calendar per year again members of the board at um director Zubia secretary Zubia we do have two calendars um presented right so we're not doing one calendar at a time uh in January you approved 23 24 25. yes but I mean moving forward we're still going to do two multiple every year oh uh because of the new process is what I'm asking not necessarily um not necessarily because of the new process I think we're doing two at a time that is the practice it that does
059not work um that's um something that we can revisit a policy does not say necessarily we have to do two years at a time what policy is very clear on is that we any change needs to be done in uh communicated 30 days before it's implemented unless of course it's an emergency closure or something out of our control but not something for a planned reason um so um we do although bring um and would want to bring multiple years for families to to plan you know future events or something we do recognize that sometimes we need to bring back the calendar because something that we thought or didn't think about uh needs to change so that is you know to your pleasure as a board if you want to do it on a yearly basis
060on on a two-year each time I just wanted to clarify that it's still Yes multiple years I think that brings up a great point though because maybe the Board needs to consider writing into policy to ensure we like I I've really appreciated the committee approach to ensure we have that in policy so it outlasts our you know being here and the same with the the two-year process because yeah I've heard great feedback about both yeah yeah and that is part as I said of the double negation that I will not fail to bring the input and do all that you know we have a joke um going into a new governance model is like um it's a muscle right going to the gym at first it's going to feel weird but then we want to
061get into the Habit that double negation is going to sound you know just normal and our English teachers are going to be just cranking in there if they listen to us but we'll help them understand why we have a double name Asian there yeah yeah thank you thank you um next you have another monitoring report the financial Administration I do have another monitoring report Madam president that based on um our calendar that we developed it's to be presented in um in April I was trying to think the month we're in uh and that is policy El for financial Administration and this is um just one of many actually uh Financial reports that we bring so one of the pieces that I noted in here there are 13 expectations that you would wish for me to
062stay to refrain from doing or not to fail in doing certain things so what I would like to suggest is we um we worked on this reporting taking in consideration every single one of the 13. but with our CFO we have a budget discussion in financial discussion during the year next study session and I would like for us to discuss that piece there with his expertise here on which of the 13 makes sense to bring when uh because I was not clear on that I worked on all of them but this is when we say Garland's you know teams start saying okay what exactly is what you're looking for I wanted to make sure that I was in compliance with your expectation of bringing this but I was not quite sure out of the 13
063because there's several throughout the year so which one is going to go what month so all of them are here we are in compliance We are following the statutes and staying within the limitations that you provide in the policy but would like to ask if it will be okay to discuss this one further uh during the executive executive session and ensuring that I keep saying executive session I'm sorry study session um the coming up later on this month with our CFO there as well um I I am okay with that I think um we didn't really work into uh the approval or acceptance of these reports I don't know um yeah I think because they're they're just an update and then um which we can cover at another time I think it's really like I
064think we just have to sit there and get it designed like how we want our state how we want the reports because we have a calendar of when they should show up um and then see which ones we want and make sure that we follow that list um I know we have I think we have a report of it but it would just be to say that we do want these in January we want these in February I want these in March and then yeah we do not it would be something that is not no it's the ones that we designed and then we would put them on the calendar on when we want them and they know when they come but we wouldn't have to vote on those no you just accept them um
065uh not not vote a year or no you just accept them um following the calendar yeah we would just table this until the study session okay yep so so it is here it is in the public domain these are also the executive limitations that as it was shared but for clarity for the community that will be used for my evaluation or the superintendent's yearly evaluation um yeah sounds great um no that was the PowerPoint um so now we're on to 5.2 The strategic plan process it's modern president members of the board uh thank you um so um I wanted to take this opportunity to really share with the board I have been giving you freaking updates some of you actually have been part of the committee working on the strategic planning throughout the strategic planning
066process we are at a point right now that we have um a quite robust strategic plan for the district you heard the um the a big picture um of it during the state of the school's presentation in April so in here I will be sharing the process that we followed uh some of the groups that participated in it and where we are and this is also something that as you think through this I will bring additional information during the study session because it will be I think more appropriate in there to look at some of the details and action steps or or strategies for Implement in there because there are too many so I would like to have a different setting for you to be able to look at it with a more Hands-On approach
067but today next slide I would like to share we did work with our partner tntp they had a grant it's you know with them as well through the old foundation and we did work in Partnership to um to have them guide the structure on how we're going to be working through the months to develop a strategic plan I would say um I personally had a much more aggressive timeline to bring this in February rather than in April but to be quite Frank part of the feedback that we were getting from the groups and you're going to hear a little bit more um at the beginning it just took a little longer to get the group to a place where they could feel comfortable speaking the truth and we did not want to push you know
068through just to keep a timeline we wanted to be true to to the genuine engagement of of um the the our community so we started by creating a vision of Excellence this is here in this slide that you can see and it was a very simple vision of Excellence the goal with having a very short vision for the district is that everybody will know exactly what it is right and not something so long that nobody can even remember and it's simple Adam's 14 students were graduate in powered inspired and equipped to be whomever they want to be so we want to make sure that they have that choice um to be whoever they want to be next slide so this is a little bit of the process um if you follow one of the callers
069you'll see one of the languages that you need to follow so we had um different groups that were six presentations um Sarah is here I'm gonna look at her six or seven I cannot remember the seven percentage group um meetings these were actually all day long meetings that we had we had several in the fall and we were focusing on conducting student parents staff focus groups again with the support of our partners cntp and the oak Foundation met with students met with staff learned about their experiences and this was happening so many different ways so it's not necessarily only one way in which information was being gathered during the winter um in in this also and you're going to hear a little bit about the community the country committee that was also part of these
070groups this is the big picture I'm going to go in depth a little bit in the next slide but in in the winter we also ensure that besides those conversations and academic groups that we were having actually miss Connie who is present here was also part of representing DAC um as we were going through those we offered opportunities for all community members to be able to give their input in writing um recording in any of the languages they felt comfortable so that we can get that input we were able to collect 488 community members input through this asynchronous tour but we also got many more in in other different fashions and in the spring we continued looking for feedback you will probably recall we were receiving feedback that was very specific on the the objectives
071or the priorities that were aligned to your ends or or goals and we did the same with school leaders teachers or in our professional development in February that was the exit ticket from them so all teachers had the opportunity to provide feedback we received quite a few and also broader community members are in the state um of the schools in in March early March we received over 100 cards with comments from parents in regards to um to the ends um next slide so this is what the Cadre group looked like this is the the main strategic planning the the core group there were 36 people uh four board members uh participated in it there were some that were um you were some of you were consistent throughout and some others were visiting we had no
072less than two parents eight School based staff members including all groups of employees Tech classified administrators certified uh 20 District based level including not only cabinet members but also members of special ed clde or culturally and linguistically diverse department and student services we had members from the Adams 14 foundation and members from Doc representing us well in what you see to the right is some of the comments that were given about the process from this individual so here we have to I'm not going to read them to you but you can read them here next slide we have two more comments here in these comments are coming from staff members there's some here from students a Community member next slide a few more community members there were some about students I think in the first
073page yes so we ended up having seven meetings with this Core Group they did have homework they were going to go out and be receiving input and talking with their groups that they were representing and bringing information back the following day next slide and this is really all that work was based on your ends that you also being part of the strategic planning process when we met in November you looked at the work that you have done before the goals that you've done before and turn them into ends those ends are the foundation not only of the executive limitations that we talked about but also of the objectives and priorities that we have moving forward in our strategic plan for main areas Financial well-being community and culture academics and Innovation and all those of course
074being a strong foundation for student achievement because that is our end goal next slide here are the ends um especially for for them to be on the record because I know you know your ends one for student achievement every student in Adams 14 school district has access and skills two skills and opportunities that prepare them for success in a post-secondary path after choosing which if you think about this and you look at this the work that the group did was about the vision setting up the vision is is closely you know linked and tied to this and I want an academic and innovation we will develop and Implement strategy starting rapid and significant Improvement at the classroom district and state level part of that is the work that we're doing with the academies the work
075that you know the all the work that we're doing as we redesign how we support students community and culture I think this is this was a very uh close to the couch where in uh us fearing out ways and having strategies to really re-engage the community and rebuild that trust that we know once was there about for whatever reason was lost or has been was lost throughout a few years so we are working very hard to regain that trust in that it's actually one of the reasons why although I had as a superintendent a very aggressive timeline to be able to present this sooner I I needed almost to hold my horses to allow the process to go through and ensure that the community and members during these conversations felt that they were not rush
076and it was something that I was not just Jack in the Box or tntp was just checking the boxes and also Financial well-being knowing that funding is not the best in Colorado we do need to work on that at a greater level but knowing also um the trends that we're having from the last 14 18 years of losing enrollment [Music] um mostly As a result of low births in this area then how do we really think strategically on our finances in our facilities to continue supporting students the best way we can next slide so uh these are our priority this is our priority uh and or Northstar our main part already ensuring that we're offering opportunities for students to really get to that Mount Adams 14er View next slide so there are some actions that
077we're taking and this is as I said the big picture for the community when we discuss a little bit more in depth during the next study session we'll be looking more in depth into specific strategies but there's there's so much that I I think it needs to be a different setting but next Slide attached to each one of your ends the group identified and this was hard work I mean for those of of Cadre members who are here it was hours and hours discussing getting everybody's input going back checking with communities bringing it back to to bring what they had heard in the out there in the community looking at the surveys we had so for each one of those actions there is a priority that basically becomes our North Star for your ends um
078to guide this work and from this priorities then um we will be setting and continue working on so what are the actions that will support this priority will support the priority that all students have experienced high quality instruction well you've heard about the academies we've heard about the themes that we're going to be developing at the elementary schools all those pieces become strategies that will lead to this those strategies in a strategic plan not everything is going to be written in stone because we need to continue assessing the needs of the students but when we talk about retaining and recruiting highly quality professionals looking at the data and the research out on on how teachers feel is part of that work and part of the strategies to develop a calendar that can attract individuals so
079um the the strategic plan really allows every staff member to see how every action is connected to take us to a vision of where we want to be based on your vision where we want to be as a district in five years so some of the comments is for the first time we understand that an action we're taking today is going to impact or how it will impact us um in three years so we're being very strategic and very thoughtful on actions that will build the district in in the foundations to get to the next level that you want to see so I'm gonna stop here for any any questions this is the shortened version questions this is a good introduction to what we're going to see I'm excited to see the details of the
080Strategic plan um once we see that strategic plan is there an opportunity for any type of input from the board absolutely I think the input um it's it's in the assessment of whether you know in six or one year you know when we are implementing things we need to have frequent benchmarks and stopping points where we say okay is our reality today the same as it was six months ago one year ago when we spoke about this and talked about this uh so this is a living document um this is uh part of the reasons why I do not think it's appropriate really for um for us to put in a document every single different action step and stuff because it's it's the strategic planning looking at it at a macro level at a big
081picture level it's including all aspects of the districts the four that you saw in the mountain uh the priorities that we know the community wants and what are the action steps that is it's going to take us there an example is today we were at the high school observing and and been delighted with the leadership of our students that will change some of our priorities and some of their strategy not the priority because the players stay the same some of the strategies on how we achieve these priorities to achieve um the end or to meet the end that you have so a long answer to say absolutely actually the the feedback will will continue happening it it's part of the implementation of the Strategic plan um face now so as the one who participated not
082on all of them but in some of the um work I could tell you how hard the tntp staff and our District staff worked on this um so I think that uh everything that was presented today minus the details is probably going to stay the way it is for now because we need to make sure that we honor the work of the folks that were here doing the work for all of those days and hours I think if anything feedback like you said would probably be more on the how we're going to do it and not necessarily the what because all of these were very strategically and thoughtfully looked at [Music] um many many times over to make sure that they were meeting with what the board had requested to begin with and so I
083think that to me um I I'm very proud of everybody's work so thank you to everyone who actually took all of those hours to come up with um you know even the starting point because this is something we've been wanting for years too is having an actual strategic plan that tells us you know what is exactly that we're trying to achieve here it's how we achieve it that I think where the feedback is going to be really appreciated and not only from us but you know even our students and our parents and when you talk about the benchmarks I'd like to make sure that that's in there as well that we realize that uh yeah it's the students who are going to be living this as well as the staff that we want to make
084sure that we honor them as well when it comes to the how but now um thank you I just wanted to say thank you to all the staff and like I said I know it took a lot of energy and planning and everything to make it work and there's a lot of great ideas and a lot of voices at the table and so I just wanted to honor that by saying thank you personally to everyone who participated so um I I would like to second that unfortunately I'm I was unable to um it was a lot of time it was thank you it was um one or two day long um and and I wasn't able to to attend so thank you and and all of our staff and volunteers that participated in that in
085tntp um great facilitator um I we did have the opportunity to meet um I I think for me um as a community member as a parent I would really appreciate if we kind of go above and beyond obtaining feedback I definitely hear what you're saying and I think we should absolutely honor and and respect the the work that's been done but this is something that our district has lacked for so many years and it's such a big thing um I I would love to see something like um you know weekend um presentations on this is what we've developed what are your thoughts what are your feedback from students and parents and community members um especially because that um Community feedback and engagement is is truly a huge piece and turn around it's a huge piece
086on our strategic plan and and I think we just need to start off on the right foot and and walk the talk yeah I just Echo that but I want to also make sure that we realize that part of the responsibility for this is on us as well as board members to go out and talk to um folks and not necessarily just the staff I think that we sometimes the Royal we that when we talk about it we don't we're not explicit enough as to who we are that we're referring to but I think in this case these are our ends as a board that I think that part of the responsibility should be ours to actually go out and get some of that feedback once in a while and I have to say that
087um to be quite transparent I haven't been as proactive in doing that I've had a few meetings but there's more that we can do and definitely help to really get this going and start creating that trust back because I think that um especially this board because I trust that all my peers we're we're here for the right reasons and it's really about our students and our community and if that's the case we need to really work with everybody on how we present this in a way that people will understand it more so I don't think that um you know all the responsibility should fall on just our staff to actually go out and collect feedback I think it's also on us to collect that feedback too so just wanted to mention that I know you
088guys have a lot to do and this took a lot of time and so um yes I just want to make sure that we are actually sharing it with the community as it is and then build on what we have because we needed something to build on and here it is members of the board to both comments one of the things that's next steps in I already had conversations with principals on this I presented you know the the idea we're working on a communication strategy on how not only you internalize the Strategic plan cabinet or principles internalized the Strategic plan and we start living in in breathing it understanding every step is building on some of these blocks to get to to um to the top of the mountain um part of that is also
089how we're going to leverage our principles and our schools to share not only what what is it that we are aiming for what what our ends are what the priorities are based on the work that we've done but also getting that input on how we meet the needs in how we support communities get there because it may look different for the different communities um so the work is not ending here actually I think this is just the beginning is the building block um it is a lot included because in transformation we we're transforming every Department in every of those four areas so I would um recommend that we take one at a time in each study session and we we go from there so that we truly internalize it because just looking at all the
090initiatives and everything at once for everything it's it's truly um a lot it's quite overwhelming in in our strategy is really to Pace this in a way that really will be you know digested rather than just overwhelm everyone so we'll start on study session if if you're okay with that yeah I think because it's so much like I think it'll be helpful for um us to work with the board um vice president and I and communicate with you on on a timeline and a plan for that because I I know it's a lot but I I also don't want um to keep moving in a direction if we as a board haven't even seen all of the the bulk that builds up to all of this if that makes sense we'll bring them we'll bring
091them all in uh yeah well not just that but if we're not the creators of it I don't think it's necessarily um I don't want there to be any miscommunication between the way that we're presenting a strategic plan to community like I think that has to come from um the creators so then we're going to have questions and we're not going to know how to answer them because that's not our role so so does the the top of it right uh and all the strategies initiatives um during the study session later on this year I will bring them all that will give you a big picture and then we can start discussing you know how do we chunk it and what parts you want um we can bring our recommendations of course but we're here
092to the pleasure of the board so what parts you would like for us to start yeah I think that's great and I think there's I really appreciate that we've taken a step back and we're doing this right it doesn't matter timeline to me I mean I think it's a great timeline because it gives us we're almost preparing for next year to okay here it is and we're going to start implementing the amazing work that's been done yeah yeah I agree um next on the agenda we have um the K-5 science curriculum adoption process um Dr Lydia it's back to you sorry um yes um do you like a recess okay go ahead and take a recess or do you want me to keep going yeah um yeah can we take a few minute recess um
093it's your prerogative to ask for recess okay um second or we just we just do it you just do it okay let's let's take a quick break foreign I'd like to call the meeting back to order uh thank you for giving us a moment we were just notified that um one of our students was involved in a very bad accident um we don't have a lot of information to share at this moment but um I think given that and given the heavy conversation that we have for curriculum review um I would like to put forth the motion that we table this until the study session since we moved the vote anyway um I'm not in the mindset to hear about science curriculum I apologize but um may I have a second oh second uh Ramona
094roll call please Mr Amador aye Ms Estrada aye Ms alvado aye Ms Molina aye mizuvia aye thank you um I would however like to continue with the agenda and enroll through the consent items if that's okay um because we do have some timely items uh may I have a motion to approve consent items 6.1 through 6.15 so moved I'll second thank you any discussion actually it's 6 0.14 I'm sorry oh 6.14 I apologize that's okay um may have a second to amend the motion to approve consent items 6.1 through 6.14 so moved oh second um roll call Ramona Mr Amador aye Chris Estrada aye Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina aye Ms Zubia aye thank you um next we have a board of education new business requests um I do have a couple board members do
095you have any that you would like to put forward um okay the the first one um this evening we had a a great presentation from a student um Olivia or and um we had the walk-in earlier this afternoon Aaliyah I'm sorry um I uh we also during an executive session um have discussions around security it's in the news we have the unfortunate incident at um our neighboring districts um and so I would like like to put forth a motion that we um asked Dak um to create a subcommittee to work with our Administration on Safety and Security um just just the initiatives and and work towards that to include students teachers parents parents um in conjunction with our staff and our professionals that is my emotion I second that much any discussion Ramona broke up
096please Mr Amador aye Ms Estrada aye Ms Lavado aye Ms Molina aye Ms Zubia aye thank you um the other item I'd like to discuss is um legislation so uh legislation has been pretty interesting um in particular there's a bill that's been brought to our attention involving a transportation tax task force that's being promoted by the legislature this is Senate bill 2393 um we we've seen the attempt to uh transport students out of our district with the the grant that's uh CDE is promoting um I I think this bill targets our brown and black communities once again um the study involves whether disadvantaged students should be bussed out of their districts into other districts um the bill uses words such as equity and an attempt to make the bill sound like it's a social justice
097bill I personally think it it mimics uh some very hard bad history um and and we shouldn't go that route but I would like to move that we direct our legal counsel um to send a letter to legislators expressing um concerns about this bill I second that any discussion or comments um I know um I would just like to report about um this item on the transportation because there has been an aggressive attempt to take our students elsewhere using this Transportation but I can happily report that at this moment we do not have any report that students have taken advantage or opted to go there I think it speaks very strong about our community and about the work that we are doing in about the pride and interests that our family have in maintaining our
098students you know in in schools close to their homes so um there are no students in this Transportation however it continues Being A disruption and it continues being an attempt to um I'm gonna say another word but in an attempt to really put a lot of Oppression and pression to uh to this community um so the good information is because I know that has been on my mind when I hear about this bill but the good information is that our students in families are not getting into one of the things that we have been sharing with our families is this um this ground to take students out of their schools to take them elsewhere is not a for Life Transportation offering it's a two-year offering and after that the student and the family will be
099alone and on their own to figure out whether they continue finding transportation to take him out of their neighboring schools or to then have the kid go back or in this case come back to us which is a disservice to our students because we do know that the mobility that kind of Mobility impacts students academic and emotional growth so um uh in but again it speaks about the wanting of ours of our community to continue having strong schools in our own community and that's what we're working on I think um to me it just shows what we knew about our community is its um disgranted nothing except subsidized the cost of our charter schools and put it in the pockets of privatizers I mean we we received the mailings as community members we see them
100standing outside of Walmarts still soliciting our students so I think it's very great news that nobody's nobody's doing it anyway so for it yep yep to our community yes all right um oh I'm roll call right roll call yes I apologize got a little too excited there Mr Amador aye Ms Estrada aye Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina aye Ms Zubia aye um any other new business from board members all right next on the agenda is Board of Education committee reports [Music] I have a couple um the Adams 14 Education Foundation we're still seeking sponsors still seeking silent auction donations so bored if you have connections for tickets or um autograph items or anything please consider helping um I believe we approved our seat at the or our table last time okay um the other thing
101I wanted to give everyone an update on is um the Commerce City urban renewal Authority um we had a meeting last evening and um I was somewhat asked to be excused during executive session because it involved um getting down to next steps in the contract so we'll have a little more information about that but that was around the multi-cultural building um so I would like to ask that that's added to a future study session um just so we can get caught up on on Partnerships like that um I am meeting with um Metro State University tomorrow and then um I will pass that information on I've also been in contact with Ascend performing arts and I have a meeting with them on Thursday that's it for me on on my boards or committee reports does
102anyone else have any updates on on theirs I could just tell you that ours uh doc will be presenting for us at the study session for their recommendations because I know they'll be working on those tomorrow um and then uh I know casby's working on their legal as well as putting a rule they're rolling out their rule board um for the rural communities um has some communication on that but I'll share it with you guys through the email that they sent me yeah awesome and I guess the only update I have is um through the Rotary Club and we're working on um the dictionaries and the toothbrushes for first and second graders that they do every year so it's amazing um how many good-hearted people attend rotary so shout out to our Commerce City rotary
103club for uh everything they do for our students so yes and I know that they've been working with our foundation as well to help with the scholarships for some of our students in Adams 14 specifically yeah in addition to that I would love to thank the rotary as well as our staff um I think uh our director of the foundation reported we had double the amount of scholarship applications we had over previous years so shout out to our staff and and getting that information out to our students um and the the sponsorships keep rolling in so um oh one last thing I forgot to update everyone we did um on the Education Foundation hire um a new director so um Josh will be introduced to the community now um he has the opportunity to work
104alongside Dale um to have a little bit of a transition period so yeah I I'll just add for Early Childhood Partnership of Adam's updates April 25th from 11 to 12 30. there is uh trainings coming up this is a trauma hereditary is trauma territory the impact of intergenerational trauma on families and how to break the cycle May 2nd and the 23rd from 9 to 12 Bridges out of poverty May 4th from 12th to three and I'll send this to the board also language Justice and June 6 from 9 to 11 trauma-informed care and that's what's coming up on for the um Early Childhood Partnerships Partnerships of Adams County and I'd just like to add to that because I want to share the same thing that if people had any questions um about how to register
105for the tickets that are free you just you can contact Lisa Jansen Thompson at 303-428-2029 thank you it's wonderful um any other updates um I think it's not really a communication about the um committees but we all did have the opportunity to attend the National Association of school boards conference in Orlando yes a week before last um congratulations to Dr Lydia and our legal counsel Joe Salazar we were able to bring our story to a national level um I also in the um great sessions I attended the feedback that I got people were ferociously writing our recognition of our linguistically gifted students was huge um and I would like us to get a have a retreat together so we can compile the information that we learned and put it to work we got lots of
106great information yes and I just um besides attending that I also wanted to inform our community that we now have a um a community center for our Spanish-speaking linguistically gifted the parents of the linguistically gifted students in the community can always come and seek out information and resources from our location at the Mile High Flea Market space c19 so every Saturday we will have a resource center available and open to anybody who needs it and that just we had our grand opening on Saturday so thank you so yes I work Saturdays and Sundays uh I will be there um not every Saturday but I will be there so yeah just wanted to inform the community that we have that going on and also our our youth Advisory board made up of Adams 14 middle school
107and high school students are doing a wonderful job on really focusing on the walkability issues that we have in Commerce City and the dangers of walking driving riding their bikes and riding their scooters in our streets and they're looking at um how they can help present or come up with a solution to present to our community leaders and our and our state leaders so they're working on that as well as their top priorities to focus on for the rest of the year are mental health and why your mental Injustice and drug abuse and so those are the issues that they're looking at focusing on this year I just wanted to share that and tell the kids hi and great job and I we meet every Monday so if anyone's interested let me know I would
108love to attend and learn more yes um I would like to entertain a motion to table 8.1 the board self-assessment um again I I don't think we're and the mindset this evening I also would like the opportunity for the board to review those questions maybe I can ask that you do that over the next couple of weeks because I want to make sure those are the questions we want to be asking ourselves as we assess are functioning at the board um so I made a motion may have a second to table 8.1 thank you I just want to say thank you for putting that on there because I've been asking for a self-evaluation or self-assessment for a very long time so the fact that we now have it and at least have a starting point
109I'm very happy about that because I think it's something that if we're going to hold other people accountable it's nice that we hold ourselves accountable as well so thank you that's awesome uh Ramona roll call please Mr Amador aye Ms Estrada aye Ms Lavado aye Ms Molina aye Ms Zubia aye all right with no further business um I'd like to make a motion to adjourn can I ask one question of course we do on the motion that we passed the last meeting for fifth grade and eighth grade yearbooks do we have can we get an update on that I know I got two emails from the middle schools about the yearbooks because they need to be ordering now yeah yeah yearbooks so I was gonna tell you about the lobby day today oh you guys
110yeah you go ahead so that was just my question I rescind my motion to adjourn please continue sorry I just had that one question just a second here recently yeah okay I'll second her reason thank you not a personal members of the board director um Amador we are working with the schools actually this week uh because I we do have specific numbers for want to say two schools so we are waiting uh and I'm looking at Ramona and she's not in so we have specific for two schools but we need to get uh for um every school because you're in in your request it was for Fifth and eighth grade so uh we're looking at the exact amount but for that we need um the specific numbers and the uh quotes from the schools so
111we will be getting that um we're going to be pushing together this week so that we can um Next Step look at the funding source yeah but um actually that was yesterday when I asked if I'm not mistaken yesterday or Friday um probably Thursday and then I can let Mr Moss know yeah so it will transfer them before Friday so Thursday uh and then we'll we'll get that funding as well we're working on it great thank you I think um really quick to add to that I um correct me if I'm wrong also it doesn't have yearbooks um so I don't know if we would like to consider pizza party I don't know something in lieu of something for the fifth grade I mean I guess for them something for them at the end of
112the year because I know they usually do like cupcakes or something maybe add something for them for their continuation if they don't have yearbooks at the at the elementary schools well that's a good question to ask also principal question yeah sorry [Music] I still have my fifth grade last week I was just gonna uh suggest um for a Lobby day for Adam's 14. I don't know when was the last time that we have done it um as you know like um we learned earlier also that the we have one more month a month and a half I would say days right for legislation to be over so I was gonna invite or suggest that maybe uh we need to start showing up there was uh some bills that were very important like the land use
113Bill uh 213 say no um that that really would impact uh the home rule right a lot of bills have been introduced uh this legislation that really would impact our community so we needed to show up not only you know to make nice to our state reps and and let them know who they represent because they're really they're they're there as public servants and we need to show them that we are the public and who they're impacting so I was gonna invite and I would love to uh lead it if if uh aloud um so do a Lobby day at the Capitol nice throwing that out there um I I would be happy to put Force emotion I think um the work you do is amazing you're you're at the Capitol and you're very informed
114and and it would be a great um high-end with with our legal counsel um we we just we have to start showing up and and if you are willing to bring that together and bring ideas I mean I know legislation is ending this year but we can show up and start showing up and then build a committee or a group that regularly shows up um and and gets our students in front of legislature learn about the process Senator Moreno is always talking about you know and I think he still does come to the school and talk about it but um we lead our Future Leaders yeah but if we as a collective um Adams 14 that would be great thank you so I put forth that motion if I have a second okay Ramona roll
115call sorry we're throwing things in out of order I think it requires action Mr Amador Estrada aye Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina aye Ms Zubia aye thank you and Madam president there's about just a month left in the uh in the session and but um the reason why this particular month is important is because the long bill has passed both Chambers and now legislation is really starting to get moving so it's a real opportune time to put yourselves in front of them great I say I always say one day at the Capitol is like a thousand years it probably feels that way sorry all right thank you everyone I would like to make a motion to adjourn I'll second on a roll call please Mr Amador aye Mr Estrada aye Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina
116aye Ms Zubia aye great thank you everyone we're adjourned we'll see you in a couple of weeks for our study session and probably a special meeting oh yes okay
