002which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for Maybe thank you first on the agendas roll call um Romano would you conduct real call please Mr Amador here Ms Estrada here Ms Lovato Here Ms Molina here miss Zubia here thank you next may I have a motion to approve the minutes of February 14 2023 regular meeting and the February 28th 2023 executive executive session and study session minutes so moved second uh Ramona roll call again please Mr Amador aye Ms Estrada aye Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina aye Ms Zubia hi thank you uh next is item 2.7 approval of the agenda may have a motion to approve the agenda so moved second thank you Ramona roll call please Mr almador aye Mrs Estrada aye Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina aye Ms
003ubia aye thank you um first on our agenda is celebration celebrations and recognitions if I could speak um first up I'd like to invite our athletic director uh Mr Le Crew to introduce our athletes and coaches that are here today thank you Mr recruit thank you for having me uh us appreciate it when I was reached out about this opportunity you know I jumped on it to recognize some great things going on this year uh first you know slow update about spring Sports uh we added a new sport this year boys volleyball uh it's it was fun today watching these boys get out there trying to learn and actually those coaches or the coaches and myself learning oh here's all the little things we forgot about today as far as having the balls the setup
004or the jam and all that yeah some of the important things you know but it was fun to get those boys out there but we have about uh 16 kids you know so which is nice and so we're competing against five different teams this year um let's see I'm having teams come most of our teams come here to play us here at Olympic High School just due to uh lack of Transportation right now you know we only have a couple bus drivers that are available after school to drive you know and in this due to our times we get out of school and all that so I was fortunate enough to get some teams to come down here and play us uh baseball will have their first game tomorrow against Westminster High School girls tennis
005has their first match today they're against against Jefferson at home girls soccer had their first match last weekend's Arvada a very good Arvada team actually and our team walked away with the 2-1 Victory you know and then they're actually at Pomona High School today playing uh we're looking at getting girls golf back up and going so we have some girls interested in that so we'll see uh how many uh we could get out come April when we start actually being able to hit the course and boys swimming boys swimming I think we have around nine uh swimmers for that and so busy spring season ahead of us which we'll give we'll go in next week um so let's jump into it so uh when I first was named athletic director uh Mr Garcia the principal
006you know encouraged me to join the Colorado Athletic Directors Association to help with my development as athletic director within the first couple weeks of that we had the opportunity to nominate uh uh Colorado Middle School athletic director of the year um I worked with Miss Kristen Gilmore since my son well probably about eight years for the past eight years I've stayed connected with her because I was a dean at Kearney Middle School at one time and that was her first year there I've seen all the things she does for the community and for the kids at Kearney Middle School uh the Cub challenge uh various after school activities coaching she's there from 7 6 30 7 o'clock in the morning to about 8 P.M 8 30 at night she puts in a lot you know
007she goes out and tries to get donations and get sponsors and tries to find things for these kids to do is to stay busy and uh in the building as much as possible and you know so um so I nominated her and found out about a month ago that she was now she was recognized as the Colorado Middle School athletic director of the year thank you so you know with that so in uh I meet with the Middle School athletic directors uh weekly on every Monday morning you know prior to them getting in their building and with that you know I I speak to him about this the classes I'm taking and I encourage them to continue down the same path as their growth as athletic directors and that's something Kristin has to take is
008going to be taken advantage of so uh at the end of April we have a conference where she will be awarded this award but she's also will be taking some professional development classes alongside me to gain her certificate as a certified athletic administrator you know so she'll be awarded uh that weekend and she'll get that award at that time um jumping into fall Sports this one this year had opportunity a couple years ago uh speaking with a couple coaches are like man we we have a vision for the softball program well fast forward a couple years I became the athletic director and they were available so this first thing is I gave them a call you know so uh they came in uh connoisseur noticed because usually you start getting ready in spring for The
009Fall season and it was in the summer and we were able to get uh some girls together and jump into the The Fall season and one thing they just this uh softball team needed was on the in the field as well the another team but the field was some TLC they organized the community you know event to get the people out there in the community and clean up the field and they set some simple expectations for our students stations and you know those girls you know started showing up to practice started showing up on time started showing up for study uh study hours study hours was out on the field you know so good bonding time uh their first week of games was a tournament uh at with Thornton High School we played good Thornton
010High School kicked our butts our girls got a little you know down on themselves but through the whole season our girls battles it came time to play Thornton High School to go to the championship and we kicked their butts you know we jumped up on him uh never let off and we waited to the championship game unfortunately we lost the championship game but we qualified for the Regionals which we believe is the first in school history you know so we went out to Sterling uh played out there uh got the approval to trino make sure the girls stood overnight so they're arrested and you know our girls went there and competed you know not the results we wanted but uh it was a great season so um with that uh coach Sarah King Donna our
011head coach was named coach of the year for the Colorado League um she had she has a great staff you know uh her assistant coaches her husband you know so I got to make sure I mentioned the assistant coach is the husband uh and then our assistant coach Jake Durand is a security in the building you know and his wife also was an assistant just coaching staff could each one of them could be a head coach anywhere in the state and build a great program so we I think we have one of the best coaching staffs in the state and not only is this when it comes to coaching but just great individuals who care about these kids which these girls don't so um I don't know if coach Sarah would like to come up
012here and say any words [Music] [Applause] and Miss Gilmore too if she'd like to um I just want to say thanks for the opportunity Mr La crew to come out and work with an excellent group of girls you know the softball program definitely needed TLC and it wasn't lack of talent it was simply just lack of belief we um our motto All year was more as possible and I wanted these girls to understand that they can do more they could be more and this program would grow and that's exactly what happened we're starting our spring season because they're going to stick with us and by next fall hopefully that we'll go deeper into the playoffs that's ultimately the goal um no coaches coach of the year without their staff so my staff is unbelievable like
013you said they could be head coaches anywhere and I am just fortunate enough to be able to kind of Empower them to do what they do so thank you congratulations [Applause] um so jumping into winter season uh you know where I work in the building with all pretty much all my coaches you know coach Jared though he's at Leicester Arnold but my head coaches are all employees of the district uh girls basketball coach James Rogers you know this gentleman is in my office by seven in the morning I probably see him six times throughout the day with always got two questions for you so you said that last time coach you know but it's our daily visit our Daisy chit chat session you know um but uh he puts in a lot of work he's
014a football coach he's a basketball coach he volunteers day and night for these kids um you know he he's there the kids know if they need something they could ask Rogers and he'll say yes you know so uh he's a great guy to have in the building and he always wants more for these kids uh this year the girls basketball team had the uh best winning season since 2005. the winning season since 2005. they made it to the league championship game against a tough Sky B girls basketball team um and you know the the first two games against this girls team from Skyview you know was was a bit of a blowout but in the championship game uh couldn't be there because I had to go up to the boys that the A.D from Skyview
015called me and said you would be very proud of your girls they competed from the first whistle to the last whistle and he's out and deep down the side I was cheering for him you know so uh they did not win the championship game but uh they had a great season and Coach Rogers was named Colorado League uh coach of the year for the girls basketball league coach Rogers if he would like to come up and please take some words no I just would like to say uh I couldn't do it like she said without my coaching staff I got a pretty good coaching staff one of them is my cousin my right hand man he's my assistant coach um and I appreciate the opportunity to continue to work with these girls and the boys
016football team thank you thank you congratulations uh boys basketball when I first got the schedule uh in the summer um we're in a little league you know it's called the car out of the league and against a lot of teams who face the same the some of the same challenges as we do you know so um looking at that League looking at a roster and talking to a few of the basketball players early in uh or late last spring and over the summer can we have the opportunity to do something special and not to win a league championship that we haven't done in 20 years actually the last time we won a league title for basketball was when our head coach Billy Jones was playing for Adam City High School you know so as long
017as they put in the work got made the grades we can do it and all season long we we battled and we battled uh in the league one of our league games against Aurora Central who's a league opponent we were down by 26 points at halftime this team came out about time and came back and won in overtime you know so that talks about the heart of this team we made it to the League Championship uh walked away with that League championship game and our coach Billy Jones was also named Colorado coach of the year for the Colorado League [Applause] you know it's the first time in in 20 years against Mesa Ridge who ultimately won the uh State the state championship for 4A uh Mason Ridge was a good team I'm not very impressed
018we just could not get on a run you know but we we played good in that game our kids uh had a great time took our kids down to Colorado Springs after three and then fed him on the way back and it was funny because they're like oh the crew uh dinner on you and I was like yeah ultimately it wasn't really on me it was Mr Doug Moss that gave me the approval you know and that's what was uh really nice because the same thing when we took the girls softball team out to uh Sterling freedom to dinner treat him and lunch make sure they enjoy this you know so that's what we made the opportunity and to experience something that they'll remember you know so I think you took out the board Mr
019Doug Moss for everything you guys done so coach Billy Jones if you'd like to come up here and say some words [Applause] I want to say thank you to my boys my coach Chris my brother Dom you know without them I couldn't have done it and uh should have showed them this yeah yeah show him these trophy though yeah wow [Applause] foreign [Applause] I totally spaced out to give Mr coach James Rogers his coach of the year uh plaque that he deserves so Mr coach Rogers [Applause] Jones uh he was named last week within the league meeting uh his pack is still being still being made from the wrestling uh well we got and I got the email about girls wrestling this year uh and doing a co-op with Co-op means joining with another school
020to create a team contacted Coach Jerry was like are we going to do co-op are we going to create our own team there's no way are we going to create are we going to combine with another team we're going to create our own team and create our own legacy so we started reaching out to girls and we got nine girls this year um that were showing up and putting into work I was playing the first practice you know they were all breathing and you know hard and like oh man are they going to who's going to show up out tomorrow and sure enough they all show back up you know so it was nice so uh in creating that program was like you know early in the conversation was who are we going to have
021a coach and his former wrestler and assistant for the past couple years he's like Rudy Sanchez will be my coach no doubt in mind all right and then within the first couple tournaments like we need an assistant because when you go to tournaments some girls are also at the same time so we're moving all over the place and it was funny after one of that first tournament is some of these girls are softball players and Coach share shows up with her uh cooler of food and after weigh-ins you can eat all you want well those girls found coach Sarah and they all her snacks within one hour you know like girls you know relax you know but uh within a couple weeks uh one of our long-term subs and former wrestlers and nephew uh ZT
022de Guerrero uh became our full-time assistant as well you know so uh seeing those kids develop that relationship with those coaches as well was it was a was a special one um boys wrestling I had a great year uh these I actually will save that let uh coach Jared talk about his seniors this year but he's had these seniors since they are in seventh grade and his older brother had most of these kids since they were five years old playing football with them you know so there's that big those are not relationship there so this year you know we qualified uh 12 for state you know nine boys three girls two of those girls first time wrestlers you know one of them you know Miss Phoebe Contreras you know freshman uh so it was a
023great year we finished second in regionals uh fourth secondary regionals uh League we won't we finished second in league but a little backstory on that League we're in is the same league we're in with other sports and we're trying to get this you know the league tournament set up to be a duel uh they didn't want to make it happen and we already had our tournaments booked we only lost so many tournaments within the wrestling season and so we sent four of our kids who were who had enough tournament who had tournament time still we sent four of our kids to the league tournament and we still took second you know so that says a lot about our team you know so um as a state we took forth you know but uh I was
024notified that coach Jared Aguero was named Toronto High School coach uh by the Cardinal High School coaching Association he was coach of the year and then by the national Wrestling Hall of Fame Association Colorado chapter coach of the year for the second year in a row unfortunately I don't have those plaques but if coach dared uh and actually coach Rudy could come up here and talk about their teams [Applause] sorry uh board thank you guys for having us here tonight everybody Dr Laria thank you um first I just have to say thank you guys for supporting them um it was a big ask for the schedule that I wanted to do this year um it took a lot of logistics between Mr Le Crew and I and fundraising and everything that we do um to
025provide the opportunities for these young men that I feel are life lessons above wrestling um you know taking them out we did we traveled almost 5 000 miles in in three months to provide these opportunities for these guys and uh and I couldn't ask for for more they showed up at every you know tournament they always show up for me they always show up for us they show up for our district they represent Commerce City to the highest level and there's nothing I can be more proud of than that um you know we took fourth I honestly thought I said I knew this group of seniors was going to be special as Mr Liquor said I've been coaching a lot of these guys since they were little tiny kids in our Adam City wrestling club
026um some of them my nephews and cousins uh that I beat up their whole entire lives but um really you know we took fourth as a team we were right behind third place Pine Creek by a point and a half um and then Pomona and Ponderosa are 5A powerhouses in wrestling and they were like 150 points ahead of everybody but I'll tell you this I'd put my nine guys that are right here from Commerce City that we grow from this big to this big to their 14 recruits any day of the week any day of the week [Applause] Ponderosa I don't think one of their kids lives even lives within their boundaries um and it is what it is they get away with it all the time and uh you know it's just what we
027have to compete with but I'll take these guys any day of the week so uh wrestlers I want to thank you guys uh for sticking with us uh through all the way through any one of you could have gone and wrestled at any gone to Pomona gone to Ponderosa or any other school um and you stuck it out through the thick and thin with with what the districts the fight in with the with the state and everything and they show up and and uh they got the grades they do everything and thank you guys thank you and it's obviously um like all the other coaches they can attest it's our you know we have one of the best coaching staffs in the country most of my staff wrestled in college um and uh that's what
028makes us very successful that that knowledge that that experience so couldn't do what I do without them for sure so thank you guys thank you [Applause] um not really one for talking a whole lot thank you everybody probably knows that um I just want to say thank you for the opportunity especially for Jared allowing me to step up and Coach these girls um couldn't ask for a better group you know the way these girls learn and adapt to the sport is um better than most of these boys and uh I think they all see it you know we're gonna be we're gonna do better they're all growing and thank you thank you [Applause] and uh with some of the girls being uh softball players and wrestlers you know a couple of the girls told Coach
029Sarah the softball coach coach we think we're wrestlers full time and uh or we think we're wrestlers that play softball and she's like I think I have a problem with that I was like I don't know you better talk to your husband because he's one of the uh he offers wrestling as well you know so but with Coach Rudy you know a man of a very few words and uh when the girls like when coach there being with these kids since there are five and these kids have been committed to him showing up to morning workouts in seventh grade going to morning workouts going home and going to middle school you know two weeks after the wrestling season ended we already got the message hey morning workout start but uh you know so coach Jared
030you know he gets on these kids he expects a lot from them and you know when they mess up he lets him know you know and uh when he when they see coach Jared getting into the boys they even said crew we need our coaches to get like that on us it's like I don't I don't really see Rudy's more talk more or less you know yeah you know so but uh so they'll be pushing him a little bit you know so but it was a a great season all around you know so we're excited to keep on growing um and uh so also Coach Jerry is also our boys volleyball coach this year you know I reached out to him hey do you want to do boys heck yeah I was like oh okay
031are you serious and you know so today was a fun uh the first day of fun day I told him since most some of them are or most of them are wrestlers we're going to wear singlets on the on the court you know with all the all the wrestlers were like heck yeah we'll do that you know but um on top of that you know just some news I haven't really shared with anybody we just went through a new uh head coaching search you know for a football and when we talk about Athletics at Adam City High School what we want to get towards is an educational based Athletic program you know getting these kids understand that not only you are are you as a athlete you're around you're a student year-round and what that
032entails you know so uh working with that and working the building again a culture back at Adam City to where it used to be uh we looked at what we wanted for our community what we wanted for our kids um and all our coaches from the team applied uh have four applied from external externally um and I had a committee and it's going through it all and at the end of the day um We Came Upon Our coach and uh at the end of the interview I asked Mike that this coach one question have you told your wife yet you know because sometimes this coach forgets to uh give pieces of information to his wife you know but with that you know and his answer to me was well I mentioned it to her back
033in September you know so uh but with that you know uh I'd like to well you already met him Coach Jared Aguero will be taking on our head football program our head coach as our football and overseeing the football and wrestling at the same time hoping to build that culture we have you know with wrestling and hoping that rolls over not only just to wrestling but something Coach Jerry we talked about is rolls over to the whole school rolls over to the whole community and that's what was his focus on the impact of Adam City High School and Commerce City and not just the impact on Adam City football you know so we're excited to see how things move forward works we already have kids in the weight room uh kids after school working out
034um so we're excited for the next couple years to see Adam City back uh competing for elite elite Championship competing for uh Elite playoff when competing for a state championship you know so it's been a a while since we've competed for something like that um with that thank you guys for everything you guys uh done for me you approved a lot of stuff for you know for us I was like oh man Jerry you have me ask me asking for what you know uh but we know working with you know Doug Moss uh Dr Josh Cochran you know um Sam you know Mr Chris Garcia you know they're uh always there for me to talk to and spring stuff off of them and put me in the position not only for me to succeed but
035for our students and our school to succeed you know so and you know thank you board for guys for wanting the best for our kids and helped me or get this stuff approved so with that uh thank you for you guys time and excited to come back hopefully before the school year ends and tell you about how great spring season was so all right so thank you again and look forward to seeing you soon thank you um don't pack don't pack them up yet Mysterio crew we love pictures um really quick just want to thank you all um colleagues you have comments uh yes go ahead I just want I want to thank you um Mr La crew for building a great team and continuing to model what we say is our gift here in

054and written works and recommits our community to engage in programs and activities that encourage students to begin reading from a young age approved was fortunately thank you director Zubia I know many of our schools have had special activities highlighting the importance of reading this month I'd like to give a special thank you to Mayor Huseman for coming in to read to our Monaco Elementary students I saw a picture about that on social media I also look forward to hearing more about the wonderful work we're doing in the district to promote and celebrate literacy including our bi-literacy programming may I have a motion to Proclaim March 2023 as National reading month so moved um yes we do yeah it is going on yes yeah yeah yes I'm sorry I need to start allowing time for us
055to make comments saying that and ask questions before we do real call um we just had a little sidebar about Battle of the books I think that's going on this year um Hanson won last year so um maybe we can get some more information about that coming up um yeah exciting stuff and then we have an exciting program rolling out this summer possibly in conjunction with the City of Commerce City in 27j we have a lot of great reading stuff happening information of the battle of the books I know it's this week it is going on this week do you want to share that yeah I know last year they had their final here yeah and I'm not sure what their final is but um Dr Cochran who is supporting schools can give us an
056awesome an update Hanson students we were with last week at Hanson we're super excited about the competition coming up they're practicing and I believe on Friday last week they had their internal battle and then this week they're working towards a different battle so I'll give you an update and make sure we have it to you so we know what's happening and who's uh top schools great thank you so much yeah I'd love to see it and learn about it awesome any other comments questions colleagues all right Ramona real call please Mr Amador aye Ms Estrada aye Mrs Lovato aye Ms Molina aye Ms Zubia aye thank you that passes unanimously passing over for signature um next on the agenda we have audience comments um just a reminder we have uh allowed three minutes for speaking
057and we have Miss Kristen Gilmore uh regarding athletic director stipends oh of course oh thank you [Music] can we project this um yeah I'm sure your only speaker today so yeah I'm okay with it bored you're prepared [Laughter] thank you can everyone hear me yeah okay cool so I want to respect the three minutes and I don't want to demean anyone by just reading from the paper because I know teachers shouldn't do that with the kids so but I don't want to go off the cuff I want to just get through it and if I don't finish the entire packet with you in three minutes you have the rest to read on your own um so I'm Kristen Gilmore I'm the Kearney Middle School athletic director as you saw um I've been AB the purpose
058is uh to advocate for an update with the athletic director stipend I've been advocating for an update in this stipend since last school year um I don't know the process to get things changed uh directly with the the agreement so I think I had just missed it and so I've been advocating for a change since last school year then I've been advocating all of this year because nothing changed and as you see I do a great job and that's why I wanted to come up and use this platform um so I pulled that table from the CTA agreement I am also kind of speaking on behalf of my athletic director partner Frank Ponting at acms we do the same job I've been at it more than four years this is his first year so step
059um it just shows that um him and I both fall under schedule four he's a step one I'm a step four currently and historically the Middle School athletic directors have been paid this amount at the end of each semester so I'll just talk more about me in this so I'm a step for ad receiving twenty three hundred four dollars times both semesters so I'm getting 4 600 for the year um I will say we do get paid you do all all of you pay us better than other school districts which I'm thankful that our coaches pay is better our ad pay is better um FYI um Sports coaches receive their stipend at the end of that Sports season Middle School sports they're approximately two months of work the ads Middle School ads receive less money
060and it's for five months of work currently and historically the Middle School ads do not submit their Athletics event supervision for timesheet pay in theory my stipend would adequately cover the time spent at these events an average Middle School game or tournament that I attend I'm just going to refer to the spring numbers throughout this whole document so if you look at this spring just based on my home events I have 20 events times two and a half hours that's 50 hours I am spending beyond my contractual time and the timesheet Ray rate rate because I'm a certified teacher is thirty dollars an hour so it's approximately fifteen hundred dollars is what I would be paid if I submitted that time on a timesheet but I don't because essentially that's double dipping my in theory
061my uh my stipend covers game pay Okay so if we look at this current spring semester Frank is earning a stipend of fifteen hundred twenty nine dollars I'm earning twenty three hundred four dollars sorry I thought that was a timer for me my bad um I think it was um oh darn that's okay I know this is a lot to go through do you have um yeah do you have like a couple of things that will was some some rice and then we'll take the time to read through this okay um basically I just did all the math for you it breaks down uh mathematically I'm getting paid like four dollars an hour and Frank is he's a first year A.D he earns less than I his is like a lot less than that it's
062somewhere in there 30 cents per hour and you can read through all the math and how I figured that out two proposals I'm making is can we please it's there's still money in the athletic budget this year the ad stipends come out of that if the money is there can we please help uh pay Frank and I better for this year's work because what we're paid is not reflective of what what we do it's not Equitable it's not fair I had other fancy words in there now I'm just going off the cuff um and my second proposal is can we please update the CTA agreement under the supplemental schedule um not just to benefit me but to benefit the coaches and anyone that runs um I took all the screenshots from the CTA agreement you
063can see there's all sorts of positions but it's very ambiguous on when do these people get paid the assumption is sports coaches get paid at the end of their season that's a safe assumption when do the ads get paid someone at some point thought oh end of the semester that'll be fine that's not right it's a it's Sports seasonal work it should be Sports season pay just like my coaches and there's other things in there that don't relate to sports but it's other stuff it's ambiguous for them too I think there's a lot of work that needs to be done on that I've seen the same thing for like 10 years with no change um can we fix the ambiguity and can we please this year if the money is there Frank and I deserve
064an increase in our stipend um tada thank you thank you so much thank you that's what I really felt right thank you Miss Gilmore um normally we don't uh respond or take any action after public comment but please know we we have the information thank you for being brave and bringing this forward to us and um hopefully we'll have some feedback soon as soon as possible okay thank you thank you next on our agenda is uh superintendent updates um Dr Lauria yes so your reports I have two updates actually okay we don't have um for this month reports but I would like to share a couple of things actually happened uh quite um exciting for our district we had last week the first annual state of the schools very exciting it was actually a phenomenal
065event we had over 230 adults you know in adding probably 50 or 60 students who were also performing for us we had a what we would call a full house and during that presentation we had individuals from our community we had administrators we had staff we had community members we had elected officials and I do want to recognize the participation of our neighbor and districts Westminster Mableton 27j and Adams 14 were there with their board presidents and board members and cabinet members as well and this is it was just the first opportunity official opportunity for the Supreme for me as the superintendent to be in front of the entire community in the board and share with them what got us here and where we're going so we received great feedback from it we had over
066120 cards left on the on the tables um all of them except two actually were very supportive the others um you know one had a good point to get better next time another one was actually an individual asking about where the money is or the money has been in the past so I'm thinking a lot of the funds that we have spent in you know previous management companies that you know there's a little bit of bitterness to be quite Frank in the community of what did we get back um you know with uh you know many millions of dollars that we paid so rightfully so we will continue having these events this is part of the uh the large larger Communications plan for the district and with the main purpose not only to or two
067purposes I would say first one to ensure that Community receives the information directly from us that we are actually able to tell our community our story and own our narrative and also um to to increase that accountability from the community and from all the stakeholders to us and um I thought it was a a phenomenal um a phenomenal uh actually event I want to shout out my staff they worked tirelessly actually at the very last minute it was like we have 11 days for it and it's almost like where are the days going um so the team worked extremely hard to get all the details so many details uh somebody said this is worse I've actually having a wedding and that was me feeling I was going to a wedding but also for the staff
068in the amount of details and I want to shout out Nathan Dr Bolton she did a he did a phenomenal phenomenal work with all the technology the presentations the I mean it's just phenomenal so all of them in their own areas in their own Lanes but I wanted to shout out Dr Bowden for just making it look so easy but it's not easy I promise you so great presentation the state of the schools that was Tuesday and we also had actually um Miss Lynch and I presented to the state Thursday and it was an abbreviated version of the state of the schools the purpose of the presentation that we had on on Thursday was a twofold first to provide an update on Central Elementary per the order of the state we are required to give
069an update to the State Board of Education on Central Elementary twice a year we can choose and do it in writing or in person we did provide a writing update in December but we also requested to be in front of the State Board to show the things that we are doing in the progress that we are having at Central Elementary so we have that opportunity last week Miss Lindsey Jaco and Andy Swanson the contact individuals from the accountability Department to support Adams 14 were there presenting with us uh Madam president I know that you um you know yeah you got sick I watched them yes uh everybody was watching it was just actually uh Lindsay uh CDE and I usually we have a whole crew we need to all go and answer questions but this
070time was different we are focusing on our students and we want to make sure that our staff that I as a superintendent you know as much as possible I protect the time of the staff so that we can take care of our students uh extremely positive feedback I don't know if Lindsay I mean if Sarah wants to share anything of her thoughts of uh of the presentation or or anything in particular that she would like to share I do want to thank Sarah yes Sarah please come come up I do want to thank um Sarah tntp cognia connect at so many um great organizations partnering with us to you know re-image the way that we are supporting and serving our students uh Sarah I was a champion there actually it was a great presentation it
071was a great presentation for the first time I can say quite Frank for the first time I can say was a great presentation from SBE I will go back anytime uh Madam president members of the board I just want to continue to acknowledge the partnership and how grateful we are at tntp to be a part of the solution we believe every kid deserves a great School in their neighborhood and we feel like we absolutely are on on the road to making that happen for the kids in Commerce City what I would say is we had a CD visit today at Central I burst into tears in a classroom because of the progress a first-year teacher had made since the last time I was in his classroom the folks in this District are working so very
072hard and I think what we spent time talking to the board about is our focus and what we believe is is going to make a difference and it is making a difference and I think every single board member came up to me there before or after to express and acknowledge the shift in how Dr Laria the board Adams 14 is presenting and the progress that's being made so just humble to be here and really excited about the progress we're seeing it's appreciate you all thank you they continue visiting our schools yes at Central today one of the things that I we want to Echo and Shout out one of the teachers was actually saying something around the I I cannot quote exactly the words but something around every pencil right now should be moving because
073that will tell me that you're actually working in everybody's capable of showing that work um so that's the spirit our students can do it our students are doing it our students are gifted in so many different ways with the language with the skills with their talents in so many ways talented students and we are telling our story and I am very proud and humbled at the same time to be part of that story so those are two of the updates of the presentations the last update I would like to share is the professional development that we've had up to this year so I'm going to ask Sheila and I know Sarah is going to be assistant as well good evening Madam president Lovato distinguished members of the board superintendent Lydia and viewing audience as Dr
074Lydia mentioned my name is Sheila Burke and I'm honored to serve as the chief academic officer for our school district I'm here tonight to be able to share a brief update on our district-wide professional development for our staff that our staff is engaged in this school year in our district approved calendar this year we had four District professional development days the first day of the district PD was held on August 3rd followed by October 25th January 3rd and then our last training day was February 13th for the school year our district professional development is aligned to our academic Excellence Playbook this Playbook was set up in three phases or what we referred to as arcs Arc one focused on a strong start Arc 2 focused on learning and Arc 3 combines both Arc one and
075two to close the school year strong through our update tonight you'll see a connection to these three arcs from our academic Excellence Playbook the site on the screen displays the topics for the three sessions that fall within the arcs for both Arc 2 and arc3 again these align to our academic Excellence Playbook session one was held on October 25th and focused on lesson internalization this session focused on preparing what we teach our students the session Builds on the work that we completed during the 21-22 school year specifically around unit internalization and professional learning communities or what we refer to as plcs session two was held on January 3rd and this focused on aggressive monitoring of our students and how and how we teach the lessons to our students this work includes having our students collect
076data during the lesson to see how students are responding to the instruction that they're receiving and then session two builds upon the outcomes from Session One focusing on lesson internalization please note that the learning in session one continues both through sessions 2 and sessions three and that was also inclusive of session two session three focused on February 13 focused on how to respond to student errors and the impact that the lesson has on moving students towards Mastery of the standard the session provided tools for staff to differentiate instruction based off of the student's needs here's a visual that supports that prior to our sessions we solicited input from our stakeholders on what we love about what they loved around working in Adams 14 and what supports that they needed on the next two slides you'll
077see the feedback collected from our stakeholders beginning with what our community says that they love about Adams 14. after each of the district-wide professional development sessions we collected information from session participants in the form of a survey the information is housed in our district data dashboard and can be filtered by each session our planning team from Adams 14 and tntp reviewed the data during our debrief sessions and Incorporated the feedback into our future sessions this included both positive feedback and what our session participants would like to continue as well as opportunities for change to make the sessions more desirable for our staff the screen displays some of the comments received in our surveys specifically about what staff supports what staff recorded that they needed support in October our colleagues at tntp visited each School in
078what we refer to as the scorecard our tntp colleagues collected information on the six goals we have established within our partnership one of those six goals was to access grade appropriate assignments or activities teachers provided blank copies of work students were expected to complete during the lesson and this equated to approximately 455 assignments or activities accounting for approximately 230 hours of class time across 141 classrooms as noted to the far left of the slide displayed this equates to 104 out of 180 180 hours in a school year or 58 percent each week school and District leaders visit class classrooms through what we call learning walks and log those in what we experience in the classroom this information was logged within our data dashboard the chart on the far left displays the percent of classroom assignments
079or activities that are grade appropriate as noted on the chart for October we had approximately 78 percent of classroom assignments or activities that were grade appropriate through our district-wide professional development principal directed time and professional learning communities in February we have approximately 96 percent of classroom assignments or activities that are now grade appropriate this slide provides the same information as the previous slide just with the Spanish translation earlier this evening I mentioned that we solicited feedback from our session participants through a survey the slide displayed shares some of the feedback we received and incorporated into our district our four district-wide PD profession PD days we offered sessions two and three in Spanish we heard from our staff that they wanted to see videos and examples specifically of our students and our Adams 14 staff and
080we incorporated these into both sessions two and three session participants requested small group smaller group sizes and we accommodated this request we also Incorporated school and District leader voices into sessions two three and four and increase the opportunity for leaders to facilitate sessions at the request of the school um both staff and leaders were we incorporated time in the afternoons for principals to engage with their staff at their schools this allowed for differentiation of the session topics to meet the school's individual needs again this is some of the feedback we received and Incorporated a complete list of the feedback can be found on our district data dashboard site our district-wide professional development is designed to have a positive impact on student achievement and on staff learning at all levels the slide displayed shares additional data
081from the surveys we collected at the closing of each session we saw an 11 increase in participants that rated the session as an eight or above from session one to session three and overall from the series we had 84 of our participants agreed or strongly agreed with the survey questions such as the content presented was relevant clear and an effective use of the session participants time we saw teacher practice uh improving as evidenced by our data dashboard and in turn student outcomes were improving the learning from our four District professional development days resulted in a shift in practice and has led to a consistent use of District level curricular materials with an average of 18 of tasks being aligned to state standards oh okay okay apologies we had some background information happening um there seems
082to be a smell of smoke over here so if you guys are uncomfortable please feel free to move um are you okay to continue um unless something happens but they're looking into that I just wanted to let everybody know do you oh okay in the Arsenal okay that might be it we might let them know somebody let them know okay thank you sorry Miss Burke quite all right I can't I can't smell or taste anything so I don't know tell me if we're on fire sorry I'm sorry please continue it's quite right thank you as we plan for the 2023-24 school year we will continue to align our learning experiences across grade levels and content areas to ensure cohesion embed the work time for session participants to apply their learning highlight Adam's 14 students and
083staff that are embedding the practices into their classrooms for other staff to study and then replicate and then we will continue to focus on developing capacity within our school and District staff by getting really good at lesson internalization through PLC processes and the lesson delivery professional development again provides us with a regular space to establish who we are as a district and what we want to be true for our students in each of our school communities I'd like to close with a few images that showcase our school and District staff in action during our four District professional development days and if I may I'd like to thank our school and District staff as well as our colleagues for their efforts in planning facilitating and their engagement during these valuable days Madame President Lovato Dr Lydia
084this concludes our update let us know if you have any questions around our presentation thank you Miss Burke colleagues questions comments um I just appreciate the fact that you asked for feedback from the staff that participate in professional development I feel that's very important and hopefully you are using that to improve what you're presenting I think it's good I really think it's good I want to thank you and the staff for making all the efforts really um I I think even putting myself like if as an employee or even I would be very grateful um if I would be getting more of this professional development to make me a better person and definitely Adam's 14 needs all that so muchas gracias thank you um I think it's it's great I've seen significant changes and just
085um as both my colleagues alluded to the soliciting the feedback to see what's working and then um what's not how you can make improvements um I we hear it we we see it so thank you um I do have one question um I really appreciate the um alignment with standards and and uh grade level assignments I know um Sarah you did a great presentation on how how much movement we've made in that I think my question is around I know as a board we've set project-based learning as as a goal of ours um do you have any um work that's going towards that or do you see how that's going to impact professional development moving forward as as we get there president Lovato Dr Olivia thank you for the question yes we are working uh
086through our our work with the academies we have project-based learning as a way to be able to connect both the CTE programmings and our core content areas through project-based learning we are looking to partner with a company that we have vetted which is pbl works right now we're in contract negotiations with them and that item will be coming to the board that'll start with training for our staff at the high school specifically our ninth grade teachers as well as our CTE instructors our Adams City High School administrators and then some of our District staff each year that will then increase going up to 10th grade 11th grade 12th grade and then it will also go backwards through our middle schools and into our elementary school so that work will then be incorporated into our system
087great that's so exciting I can't wait for this to trying to come to fruition yeah thank you um my other question uh director zubie and I had the opportunity to meet with students at the high schools um so my question is how how or if we're soliciting feedback from our students as to how these professional developments are impacting them in the classroom I know one thing that I heard um which I I wasn't aware of that the high school has moved to longer block classrooms and so just thinking yeah thinking how that's differentiated in the training because we have teachers that are obviously having to not necessarily stretch out what they're teaching in class but how they do that like what what's where they can Implement more Hands-On when they see the class kind of
088okay I've had enough of the subject or whatnot yeah and also the off periods yeah so Madam president uh members of the board I'm going to start answering the questions for us the input from students because I actually met with that with uh two groups the last two weeks I mean another one later this week maybe two this week um and um one of the questions is how can how can we gather input from you to to get better at being better for you right in return for the students so um formally um there is not a survey that we are sending students at this time to say do you see any difference in um teacher instruction or do you you know the input that we're receiving or that we're getting from students is not
089geared to that as of yet we're working this year primarily with the teachers getting better at it what I can tell is data that we are receiving back not only from the staff yeah seen you know that they see the implementation of their input in the following professional development is besides that is also the retention rate that we are having we by December 31st for the last several years we've been over 10 percent of turnover of teachers this year for the first time in probably a couple of decades we were in single digits not only single digits we were below two percent so we are retaining our teachers and that is a result of um very structured and purposeful and strategic professional development and support for teachers we will get there where we are actually
090getting input from teachers we are working with them actually the middle schoolers had a great idea they told me this week surveys that they can be filling out during their first block could be even around you know who their favorite teacher is and why because we were talking about being vocal about when you see some a teacher doing something great let that teacher know so we're gonna build that into our culture where everybody is going to be accountable for everything in by everybody and as far as the blogs and the the off period um can't speak to that but student feedback is important and we're going to set up structures for that in the future Madam president Lovato uh Dr odia thank you for the question so we have been working on the master schedule
091for next year specifically for secondary as most schools are doing now we are in partnership with connect ed around the master schedule for the academies and we're blending that into Lester Arnold as a result some of the blocks in there will be changed within the time of the block meaning the length and duration of that and part of that will be set up to be able to accommodate the project-based learning to be able to set forth the linked learning both from the core content areas to the CTE programming and so we want to make sure that there's plenty of time for students to be able to build their projects that then go along with them to display their understanding of the standards so that'll look different ninth grade will operate with a different Master scheduled
092and students in grades 10 through 12. although those that will also be set up so that we are maintaining a system as we go forward while we're introducing a new system coming in and so those will be Blended together we are in talks right now with Adam City High School specifically around their success block and the off periods and making sure that their structures built in place to maximize that time and or other opportunities that students can engage in during their off periods great thank you okay I have one more and then I'll put some mic over to marsubia um I really love that um our focus is teachers but I my question is around the other um professional development for other uh I think in our uh classified and otherwise can you speak a
093little bit towards that like is does that happen at the same time this is happening just in a different building or a difference with everybody yes okay modern president Lovato Dr odia thank you for the question yes um our agendas for professional development on our four District PD days encompasses all staff at all levels some of the District staff receive their professional development prior to the district day because they help in facilitating for our content leads sometimes our elective teachers then I support them through a different budget to get their own professional learning because they too are often facilitating on that day but we provide professional learning for classified staff our special service providers whether it's speech and language otpt Deans counselors so all job categories are covered during that day to be able to
094make sure that all of their learning is being pushed and that they're helping to grow within their profession to moving forward Madam president will include those numbers as well in the PD presentation should Encompass everybody awesome so my question is around the professional development topics themselves um is it just all related to teaching to their subject content area are there other things like trauma-informed care type of trainings or soft skills knowing what kind of learning style the kids have so that you know working with immigrant children I mean are there other things that staff are being trained or provided resources and support with besides just once again doing the learning to get out of you know to make sure that our kids are passing certain standards and statistical data that goes with it because I
095know that and we all know that a lot of our kids come with uh like you said before a lot of gifts that they bring to us a lot of issues sometimes from social determinants of Education which you know translate from Health to education but I'm just wondering what other um trainings are being offered to our staff from you know the perspective what the kids need if that makes sense yeah so Madam president Lovato board member Zubia thank you for the question we provide training not just on these four District PD days but throughout the entire year part of that comes in forms of principles directed time where some of those other items board member Zubia that you mentioned are incorporated into during principles directed time throughout the school year that is then targeted to
096each school's individual needs and then what their data says both their academic data behavioral data attendance data and so we look at a variety of data sets to be able to help determine what it is that they may need and what it is that their staff is asking for throughout our district PD days we have language strategies built in to be able to support all of our linguistically gifted students and that's Incorporated not only in our district PD days but then in the plc's that we have weekly as well as the principal directed time our LCL components are also built into that and so it's on growing throughout the year tonight's highlight was specifically the four District PD days but I didn't want it to go and mention that we're not covering those other items
097it's just done in different parts throughout the school year thank you I just wanted to make sure that was highlighted because I know that there's such a need there's such a great need in our district for the community school model to be you know replicated in some of our other schools so whatever we're doing in one school would be really nice to do and the others and I think it's important well in my opinion it's very important that our community knows that things happen behind the scenes that we're not really you know seeing day to day but it's happening so it's good to know that you guys have this ongoing process because we do need more of that in this community we need more caring and empathetic adults that truly are student-centered student focused and
098I think that when you have a well-rounded program for professional development that includes everything it just speaks volumes of our staff so thank you any other questions awesome thank you Mr Speaker that's a great presentation awesome thank you Dr Lauria as well for your updates um I want to say again how great of a job you and your staff did in planning and executing the state of the school's event um I I was awestruck it was amazing and it was um so great to see our students highlighted and just the um I I couldn't walk out of there without talking to at least 50 people like oh my gosh this is great like are you going to be doing this every year and it was just such a great way to kick off things um
099and I think we're going to have um a video or the PowerPoint or additional information posted soon is that correct yes it is um the whole session is going to be posted as well as an abbreviated version um video um shorter I'm not sure it is posted already no full version is ready to be posted and they're also working on a um just highlighted the main pieces or you know in the message and um you know for anybody to who wants to see an abbreviated one great thank you and again I apologize to you and and sorry for missing um the State Board presentation I I woke up and I was like yeah no I can't even I can't even attempt it so thank you both for for um doing that um I know everyone
100here we're feeling um inspired and energized by the message um we are changing the narrative here in Adams 14 and we just had a couple of weeks we had the um out of 14's Got Talent event which uh Miss Lucy uh co-hosted with uh one of our students Sid Lally second grade at camp and she is who yes she is amazing personality yep but thank you um we are we are moving and shaking so thank you all for your your great work uh next on the agenda we have consent items um we have item 6.1 through 6.7 may I have a motion to approve the consent items so moved second thank you Ramona roll call please foreign great thank you I encourage you all to look at um board docs that does have additional information
101but we approved Personnel actions um approved purchasing license for monday.com which is a great project management software program approval to renew droplet forms workflow software we approved purchasing I'm going to butcher this anatomage a tablet for the CTE work yeah through the rise Grant funds um approval to contract with Motorola Solutions for the implementation of a Nitro pilot which was very interesting approval to increase purchase spending limit with vendor ESS West LLC for substitute Staffing Services and we approved an increase to purchase our spending limit with Regis University for academics and human resources next on the agenda we have um business item 7.1 acceptance of the annual comprehensive financial report or um otherwise known as the kaffir for the year ended June 30th 2022. um Mr Moss thank you for joining us I have a
102presentation uh pleasure to be here I didn't anticipate having to do this but uh the Auditors on the 28th should have presented some kind of financials um so I will do it for you and what I did is basically I put together a little slideshow I took our board policy die that's our annual audit and I just broke it out in a few pieces it's actually longer than this um actually what we're going to focus on tonight is the budget comparison to actuals and you know we do have within the audit itself there's supplementals and and also the opinions of the audit are in there from the Auditors now I did prepare something and and give to you that hopefully you have read showing what you probably should have went through the night that he
103presented of all the findings which there were none that we were in compliance of state law we have to do this every year it's an annual audit and the district on our behalf we actually prepare all the financials for them and we present them to the Auditors and then they audit those of what we present so everything came out in good shape and uh one thing I do have to say is normally when they come and present the night on the 28th if he would have done a better job that's the night that you automatically accept the audit there is no approving an audit because if you guys were to vote no on the audit we're out of compliance so just kind of giving you a little heads up there um so let's kind of
104tie into uh the financial statements and so we're going to go through each fund now that fund 18 the at-risk fund risk management fund is actually a part of fun tin the general fund it just rolls up in there we track it separately on our own so that we can kind of track it better as to the spending that goes on in that fund so starting with the general fund as you can see you know we had an original budget of 72 million dollars almost 73. um they had a final budget and I don't know where that came from but uh it's probably something that the previous CFO or something did to change the budget at that time and I don't know why they do that but they do and then as you can see
105total revenues actually came in at 75 almost 76 million dollars so actually we took in seven almost 7.4 million dollars more in revenues than what was budgeted for the school year in expenditures we actually have expenditures and included in this is your actual fund balance so we have your expenditures plus your fund balance and that's at 92 million dollars when they did the uh revised they made it at 95 million dollars and then you take that the total expenditures of 72 million dollars less the revenues so we were actually 3.3 million dollars more in Revenue than expense by the time we do transfers out into capital reserve for our building projects Etc then we show a negative 2.3 million in fund balance so actually we dropped fund balance by by that 2.3 number which 27
106million dollars is very healthy for a district our size um and so any questions with the general fund so far questions and I know um I guess just a general comment because you're kind of working with the previous administration the way they did things and then interpreting it I I think for me it's more of a comments um I think it would be very helpful to um like like what I do when I look over these presentations I pull up the original budget that we approved and it's very helpful to have Like Apples to Apples so like these changes that were made um to maybe show like this is what we adopted this is what happened and and this is where we ended up um because it's it's a little hard to which I need
107to do a better job of reaching out to you and asking questions um but where where the changes occurred like which which um for lack of a better word like a line item that was or an account that was um like like there where we have the blanks is is a great example where we have Community Services food services non-reimbursement those seem to be broken out from a larger account but just to be able to tie those two together like I went down to the bottom line and I'm like okay yeah and you know apples but um to me that would be helpful if we could do that I think you can see kind of over on the far right side there you can see some changes within instruction they actually uh spent 1.4 million
108dollars more um pupil Services they actually spent 2.2 million less um just things like that you can look and see but I know that the one report that I'm working on now to get to you guys to show what instruction were salaries and all that show benefits supplies all that will have the budget and then we'll have actuals today it's going to be different than what I've been giving you guys but this will be more you'll be able to see by program where all the dollars are being spent that's awesome okay thank you our nutrition service fund this one actually is doing very well um I know probably the last two three years prior before covet hit it was probably running almost in the red so this this year they actually increased by 148 thousand
109dollars in Revenue which is phenomenal to me um so now they're a half a million dollar fund balance which is very healthy one thing I did notice when I received this was their budget was 3.2 million but they spent 3.7 so I'm trying to figure out somebody didn't change the budget like they had in the general fund so we may get a little slap from CDE saying how come guys overspent your budget we may okay I think um if my memory serves me correctly I think we did a budget adjustment which I'll have to look at the date because I remember that I remember we had to do a big fund balance transfer because of okay I think we're covered I just don't know that it was documented excuse me so Food Services are doing
110well our grant fund we actually only had we brought in 11 million dollars in in revenue for the year um they only projected 4.8 million which with Esser I would have thought it would have been higher than that but uh um they did expand they had a budget of 25 million dollars in expenses but they only spent 11.6 the same amount as the revenue brought in so it should it equals zero at the end um I will have a report for you guys here probably when we do the next uh study session on the Esser funds and how it's broken out by schools some of the things they're purchasing uh the staff that are being pulled from there you'll understand that more so I'll have that for you here later on as well Student Activity
111fund I really don't focus on this one much because as a district we we do not own that money it flows through us but each of the schools and their activity funds are our students generate that so I really don't focus on it much but we actually are going up in fund balance so they have 275 thousand dollars in their activity funds throughout the district and so they're actually doing pretty well um one thing I do want to say um with the activity funds I am going to have a transfer done from the general fund not this year it'll be next year when we do our budget so that none of our students are paying fees so athletic fees are going to go away any of the other little fees that are out there so
112maybe some of this uh fundraising and some of those type things might stop because I know it's uh draining everybody so and it seems like the same people are the ones getting hit up every single time there's a fundraiser so that's coming down the pike and that'll be in next year's budget that's wonderful our fee supported fund that is like our print shop uh also uh preschool funds and some of those things they are actually doing a lot better this year they went up by almost four thousand dollars so that's good I anticipate this next school year with the amount of internal printing that's going on it's really skyrocketed and I'm glad about that because we brought brand new equipment and stuff for the print shop and I would say they're probably running 200 000
113in the black so they are doing a phenomenal job I know HR team they use them all the time and the audit that you have here tonight we had that printed internal wow okay the Auditors print it and charging us for that so just it's good to have that kind of service and the preschool funds doing well and that's going to be a big change for next year out of the general fund and then also uh trying to figure out if the state's got enough money to fund the preschool program Bond Redemption fund this is where we pay off all of our bonds it's actually 7.5 million to the good each year you're going to see a big number like that because once we pay everything off in July or June it actually goes way
114down but then we get all the property taxes and it builds right back up so it's always going to show hopefully in a positive form we did go down two hundred and ten thousand dollars but we only need like six million dollars to pay the bonds so we're pretty healthy one of these days maybe in two or three years if it gets built up high enough we can buy a year and knock it off that much quicker okay or even drop the mill Levy to help the taxpayers our cop fund that is uh when you guys built allsup you had basically loaned some money from the state and so now we're paying that back as well um as you can see um it's not a lot that we're having to pay each year it's almost
115500 000 but we generate enough money and debt in principle and and revenues and we do transfer a little bit of money to cover that expense each year our building fund this one is basically has gone away as you can see uh the actual is zeroed out right now so this fund will actually go away next year because that was part of the allsup project as well and so all that's been paid off and done and it's wiped away so that's a good sign um Mr Moss really quickly with that do we um do we establish a fund for each project separately um I'm just thinking like as we move forward with our um facilities plan I'm anticipating expenses are you going to get to that that's the next one okay sorry that's all right
116so now the capital reserve fund this is where all of our projects within the district buy school by we got I.T in there we have uh security issues we have uh anything at the buildings that need to be done Roofing um them are some of the biggies that we're looking at next year are roofs parking lots um the only thing I got I got to be focused on is how much we transfer because if we keep transferring a large amount of money every year and and wiping it out as you saw in the general fund we went down by 2.3 2.4 million if we keep doing that it's finally going to just we're going to be broke so I I would like to throw it out there and I know we can't do it right
117away but we we do need to study on looking at getting a bond because the needs in all of our buildings right now are substantial and uh if I wish I had won the lottery and we'd have just fixed them all up but uh but yeah as you can see um our expenditures we budgeted five they actually increased the budget to eight we spent seven last year we only transferred five so we had two million dollars just sitting there to help cover but as you can see well this year it'll be different so that prior year you had an ending budget of 3.375 thousand dollars left to carry over and then we increased that transfer by almost seven million dollars so that's that's something we got to look at and we study it with Matt
118and his team with Brandon and his team um with Mario and and security I mean we got vestibules that we're looking at putting in uh we're still working on cameras um locks that we've put in all the buildings and all the all the school doors so we're doing a lot of work in once we get into budget time and and doing all that stuff we'll bring all those lists of things and we'll actually prioritize what you guys feel needs to be done as to what the district and the staff need thinks they need to have done and that is all I have for tonight if you have any questions I'd be happy to answer or try to and if not reach out to me directly and and I'll help you out as much as I
119can would be um imperative just given what you said like my question for you would be how how can we support you like how we we know that we're gonna have to go for a bonds and and we need to not only understand the implications of the forecasts coming to us soon I think you had said but where we're gonna you know look in three years and five years and seven years based on our needs but um I know in previous years as a parent I sat on a finance committee um where we had experts in the Financial Field not only understand it but um be able to bring that parent perspective like this is what I would need to hear because as a commit a community we don't support a lot of education so
120we're it's going to be an uphill battle to begin with so um how how can we support you as a as a board um in getting you additional resources or or putting forward a committee or something like that um you know at the support you guys give us is incredible I have to be honest there uh my team that I have within in the department are phenomenal from my payroll staff to my AP staff to my accountant to my director so they they do a lot of the work when the audit Auditors are asking for Stuff they're the ones pulling and pulling all the documentation and coming in and saying is this the right stuff to give them and and so the support is phenomenal I mean it's it's more of us getting out in
121the community especially if we want to go for a bond and we got to go and sell and sell and we got to take pictures and videos and and just of everything that's breaking and I think if people saw everything that is in shambles they would say oh my goodness why now we now we get it and then we build upon that with the community and with stakeholders within the community that's where we got to get out rotaries uh uh uh all of those bigger groups out there that we need to sell it to them because we we can cry wolf all day long but we're not doing ourselves any good so I would say in the next two three years we start working on a plan to start developing that and then maybe we
122go to the voters but it's going to take a lot of work on everybody's side thank you yeah I'll say um if I can add one Tibet is to include the students I think they were um the group that made the difference in getting our new high school because we tried for many many years and I think that barely passed like 53 I don't know it was it was it was very close call but the students were phenomenal yeah we got to share our story and let the students share it because you know if we did a video when I was at a prior district and that's how we got it done we showed the showed the students in there and they're talking about what's wrong with my building and here I'm in this room
123and I got water leaking on me how can I learn you know just things like that so we gotta we got to share that story with our community can I just mention that um last uh time we tried to pass upon actually Lucy and I were on that committee and we actually did tours of the buildings to the influencers that you're talking about to anybody who wanted the tours um I think this time around it's more of let's compare how worse they have gotten since those tours how much more we are in Dire Straits now than we were eating back then I I think is more helpful as opposed to yeah check them out this is what's wrong no this is what continued to be wrong and this is what's even you know what got
124worse since then because we did try a lot of that and we did videos we did photos we did lots of things to try and and make that happen I think that this next time around we need to be a little bit more strategic and say this is I mean we are this is our buildings and this is what they look like but like you said having it come from the perspective of the students is going to be a lot more impact because they're the ones who are impacted they're the ones who are in the building day in and day out they're the ones who are struggling because our buildings structurally are not set up to be conducive to what we want them to be doing you know with all the technology and you know
125the um Project based and everything we need the space to be able to do all of those and I think that our community needs to really rally and support our students because that's who it's for it's not for the adults it's really for the kids and they deserve it so thank you for bringing that up any further questions any other questions like even for myself like more understanding also like Madam president uh mentioned about learning about the fight I was I think I was in that class too um but to understand like the mill Levy and and the bond because um I mean looking for the future if like I don't know anything about the schools I don't have children perhaps um and that's on my Ballot or something like how we need to educate
126the community now like director DaVita mentioned uh so they could be prepared for the future as to why we need this because it was and it's hard for us to understand but in a I guess maybe bring it down a notch so the regular folks that the community can understand what a mill Levy is and what a bonds are and how do they impact our community positive or negative because normally we just hear its taxes right it's oh I don't know you said right three dollars so um some of the traumas that we've heard we were walking the we're knocking on doors So yeah thank you so much and um yeah thank you to all your stuff thank you so when I know also at um the casby meeting that we do every year at
127the Broadmoor there is a company that can help us as well um I talked to the guy and sat down with him um and they will help help educate our community to be able to understand what a bond is and how to pass it and what the mill Levy is I'll reach out to him and talk to him I had I talked to him this last time at casby we had until like two in the morning so yeah so we need to start the conversation we do now yeah we need to start it now because it takes a couple years and he's he's the one that just held 27j passes so yeah yeah but youth also yeah he also had the youth that came through or them through the Rocky Mountain partnership but I think
128putting everything together including that would help us because our community doesn't want to pay more taxes and that's all they hear so thank you great thank you Mr muss um with that may I have a motion to accept the annual comprehensive financial report for the year ended June 30th 2020. so moved oh second further discussion okay quick thank you Mr Mauston team I know you had to step in a little more about this around but we will get better every time thank you uh Ramona roll call please Mr Amador aye Estrada aye Ms Lovato aye Ms Molina aye Ms Zubia aye next on our agenda is um board education new business request do we have any um I have one um I had the opportunity to attend a number of PTO meetings at the schools
129and um sorry Mr Masters is going to involve you again but I would like to move that we find a way to cover the cost of yearbooks for each of our fifth graders 8th graders fifth graders and eighth graders for each Elementary and Middle School this year um I think we have funding as part of our board budget but also other sources but I would like to be able to say we've we've gifted them this for this year and and to let the schools know because I know they're already in in planning stages for that so I made the motion thank you um Ramona roll call please Mr Amador aye Ms Estrada aye Ms Lovato aye Mrs Molina aye Ms Zubia aye awesome any other new business requests all right I I only had the
130um I had already talked to Dr Lauria but I wanted the rest of the board to know that I would really like to get our volunteer program going of the the moms group or the dad's group and our schools to help you know uh just to help wherever they can and have a good process to help to have a good process for our volunteers sorry to have our volunteers um you know I know there's a process for them to to that they need to go through to be in the buildings so somehow looking at how to expedite that so that more parents that want to volunteer are able to and able to come in and help support wherever they can so I just want to make sure that I shared that with the rest of
131you thank you thank you Dr Lauria are you seeking um action like do you want us to approve a pro or get an update or a process no I just was sharing um at this point in time so that you guys knew I had requested oh okay I see oh I said this is something that Dr Lydia she's already working on it I just wanted to Great to give you all an update um that that's thank you okay that's helpful does that work how exciting yeah I think that's something we hear a lot in the schools is and it's one of our board goals we want to make this welcoming and get parents and volunteers involved I also hear a lot with our um Community businesses so that would be neat to have that extended
132in that way as well next on the agenda is a board of education committee reports um is there anything board members would like to share about committees too Dak will be presenting next month right or not next month the month after April right yeah next next month that's right yeah I'm just inviting for more people to the dock is you know than any parents or you know you know students that want to join us it's uh like I mentioned earlier a lot of the things I've learned even the Roberts Rules of Order I got to learn through the deck uh the financial reports all the stuff we got to learn through the deck so it is I do encourage parents and community members to join us and it's getting a lot of fun thank you
133great work doc I do miss going to the meetings um have to get some guidance on if I could just be a flyer on the wall since both of our primary and our secondary uh DAC Liaisons attend every day meetings so I know it's like that's wonderful I just if you want to go let me know I can stay at home no I think it's wonderful I just watch online [Laughter] all four of us were on the deck at the same time weren't we that one time or another um [Music] I have um so we met yeah um director Estrada and I met with um can you speak into them yes we met with our um we had our first meeting with CTA last so that went well we have another one coming up towards
134the end of this month so not a whole lot to update yet I also uh want to thank our rotarians or you spoke of rotary so as the rotary representative I want to thank our rotarians from Commerce City our Commerce City rotary club members because they are huge supporters of Adam's 14 students and um yes they they continue to support and continue to help fund some of the scholarships and some of the other programs that um that they're passionate about that we're passionate about as a group so those are the two main ones that I'm on that I can update thank you um along that line I had the opportunity to meet with our certified uh team um such great work I think um one of the things I heard loud and clear is um
135we have to find a way to start paying our staff more when we have bus drivers that are working hard nutritionists custodians and you can now go to DPS and make more to start than somebody that's been here for years you can go to Walmart they've increased their their minimum wage I just I think we have to find a way to not only be more competitive but to take care of our classified staff so that'll be a budget discussion item that I would love to to engage in um we've also had several Adams 14 Education Foundation meetings um quick plugs Fortuner Fest is April 27th there's still time to register to attend um we're all accepting silent auction donations um if you would like to sponsor a table all of that we would love to
136have you [Music] um a big thing happening in there is our director Dale mingleton has been with us for a number of years and um he's retiring um and so we're in the middle of a director search um so so you might be hearing about that as well um trying to think what other committees I'm on um I I don't have an update for the urban renewal Authority I apologize last night I still wasn't feeling well finally got over the hump so I missed that meeting last night but they have a lot of great um things happening with the mile the Greyhound Park developments including as part of that if the board will recall you authorized me to reach out to Metro State uh University and I'm haven't met with them yet but I'm very
137excited um their Chief strategy Officer James Mejia is somebody that I work with closely with at the Hispanic chamber of commerce so he right away reached right back out and was like yes our strategic plans align I would love to have a conversation so he's been traveling but I hope to have an update here in the next week I mean I I was just going to have the initial conversation and then I'll Loop in Dr Woody on her team to dig into that but very exciting um things happening the restructuring did you have an update the web Oh yes most importantly I am on um the reorganization committee as well we had our first real um meeting we had our organizational meeting last year late in the year um and we had our first real
138meeting this past Friday it was a couple of hours um I think for that it took a very interesting turn um I think I I would just like to um publicly thank our neighboring districts I mean their their support and work is is an expertise and and this is invaluable um we did as a committee decide that um the conversation was just very heartwarming because we all know the three work processes it's not slated out to work um and we had a motion where we're gonna dig in uh very lightly to show why it's not feasible and then the committee did charge me with reaching out to the commissioner of Education to say this is what we found um we we seek your guidance as to move forward but we just do not feel it's
139it's a good idea to use taxpayers money or the committee members time and resources to dig into a few dialogue a futile attempts at reorganization so um oh Dr Lydia yes yes Madam president um members of the board and members of the community if I may add to the reorganization meeting last week I was present during the meeting I actually observed the meeting I'm not part of the of the committee but these are public meetings and um like you said I'm very proud of neighboring districts and how um how vocal and um allowed neighboring districts are being around this is not going to work reorganization is not going to happen it is not in the best interest of students and it was said by several members over and over so I think there's a very
140clear message this is unfortunate like I actually shared during the State Board presentation on Thursday when I was asked what are challenges for the work that you're doing because the State Board recognized the great work and the traction that we're having and resulting in students growth in in student higher student achievement because we we brought the data to them and when they when one board member asked about what are the challenges um I responded is the other things that are distracting us from focusing on our students that are preventing us from investing every ounce of our energy and our students which is where we need to be focusing and investing time on so I believe uh it is very clear for everybody we did have conversations with you know um even our clerk here in
141Adams County and just the cost the the um estimate cost to even bring something like this to our voters and only for us Adams it will be you know almost one million dollars and this this is not including three other districts so I believe it's a clear message I do want to to invite anyone in community to to share what their thinking is and to really push for a um an opportunity for us in Adams 14 to really focus on our students we are collaborating with our neighbors we have plans in in action already since last year before this reorganization even um was brought to the table but I think that the staff the community and even state board members were able to see especially Thursday with the presentate students and changing the way that
142we have structured ourselves to ensure sustainability in the supports that we bring to our students so very humbled to have been there just listening to our neighbors and I want to publicly thank them for being courageous and honest because the organization will not go through we know that so let's then focus on what really matters the most which is our students and our schools [Music] on a great play and I don't know how how best to move forward with it but I think um our community doesn't know what's going on or or how how they would give feedback um I I would like to publicly thank um our CTA groups they they did lead a lot of work with the Colorado Education Association and they had the arms around Adams 14 committee who put on
143the the event last week that showcased our amazing students but I just I don't want to feed something um but I don't know how to balance that with um like when we say we want to hear from you like how how are we hearing from folks you know what I mean like I I just I think there's such a voice that our community has and I don't know how best to harness that or honor that yes I think um what what I heard from the discussion with um legal counsel even at the group and folks asking questions those members who are out there really are representing their their um their their districts and the voices of those in the district so I think that is something that the committee can spell out different ways in
144which each individual um District can get feedback from from the community I think we have heard it loud and clear with these organizations that are you know arms around Adams 14 and uh words of support so um I think that will be a question that is appropriate for the committee for the committee to determine um determine how can they get input even before we have to go to voters that will just be a depletion of money uh over approximately one million dollars that's an estimate just for Adams 14 I can imagine that will be similar for the others I have no idea but it's going to be around four million dollars just to bring it where we can really be investing that in our students because we know um based on the conversation of the
145comedian other neighboring superintendents neighboring boards who have past resolutions against this reorganization I I think that is money that should be spent in our students not in a process that we know is not going to go anywhere so um appropriate to ask the committee for next steps I just feel like there's an extra weight extra weight on us because it is impacting our district and our community um but um I think we quickly found on Friday like even we're not the experts so we're relying back on the experts and that puts additional work on you and your team and and as well with the neighboring districts and it's just it's a ridiculous waste of time so yeah I think a lot of time and energy and hours of stuff from all the different districts it's
146uh it's really sad but I think that we as adults and the right people can turn it around yeah yeah so that districts do not have to suffer through this so I'll have more to update on that um We're not scheduled to meet we did have a deadline for some work being done uh mid-april so I think we'll have more information after that yeah yeah no everybody's been sick we're just running into the ground [Music] um the other committee I'm on is area boards and we have not had anything happen with them for a long time okay um city council is my other committee we have tons going on there um I I hope as as a community we're we're keeping up I think a couple of big things um they've implemented a really good
147uh recap of their their Council sessions which I think is neat they do a video and explain what was passed and what questions um one of the the larger things that's before the community is rezoning of the district so I would encourage folks to look at that yeah um all of our districts in Commerce City they're they're balancing um I believe they have a bylaw where they they want to keep each district um equal as far as population and there's been so much growth up North but at the same time My Equity lens always goes to Red lighting and like okay why are you doing this so it I just encourage everyone to get involved voice your your thoughts and and keep up to date it's a lot of information um foreign I just want
148to clarify that's not like districts like school districts the words yeah so we have like word one word two thank you yes I apologize not school districts but it's yes wards um thank you thank you yeah I think I think that's all we have for committee reports any any other committee report updates um next we have other communication from the Board of Education um I have a couple so um as you know at the Adams 14 Education Foundation Fortuner Fest is coming up on April 27th um I'd like to ask if if as a board we agree to sponsor the gala at the Mount Princeton level again we do this typically every year I think it's five thousand dollars um so I just want to get thumbs up and um Mr Ramona do you mind
149working with them to confirm our sponsorship for this year yes ma'am thank you um I think it's a great event if if any of you haven't attended I encourage you to attend I think tickets are not that much um every student gets up and and speaks and accepts their their scholarships and it's just it's so heartwarming um additionally I wanted to throw out their promise quickly approaching the annual prom dress event is going to be held this Saturday from 9 A.M to 3 P.M at um Adams 12 I think at their their main location but I just wanted to give a quick shout out to Jessica Montour she's a 1993 Adam City High School alum I play tennis with her volleyball basketball third anyway um I I just want us to um think about how
150we can support that that group either to sponsor in future years it's obviously happening Saturday so a little short notice but for future years students can get prom dresses for ten dollars and and I think that would be so great to either have a secondary event or something here where we can just give our students access because prom dresses are expensive they've even ventured into shoes and accessories and I volunteered for a couple of years there and it's just it's it's great yeah yeah but I just want to figure out how to how to support them better so um but also one is for the plug for students to attend the Saturday um and to recognize my my girl Jessica um all right does anybody else have any other communication updates I have no go
151ahead go ahead so well two things as you all know um I am an environmental justice advocate so I am inviting the board as well anybody tomorrow there is this late really late notice but you probably already know this cultivando's having their press conference regarding the air monitoring uh um tomorrow regarding our um the Sun Core settlement that Maria and I were part of that money shifted over to some of the local organizations so they're going to do a press conference informing the community of the findings and it's really important for us because as an environmentally stricken Community some of these Health impacts impact our education as me right my child my children with their issues so um that's that is uh happening tomorrow actually so it's but on the 30 on the 30th here
152at uh Eagle Point we are having another one uh called reimagining a healthy and safe future for Commerce City and that is also an environmental and that's inviting the whole community and I asked invite the the board because you know through the group I work with um and cultivando which is also one of the hosts uh Front Range concerned citizens up in the north of Commerce City as well um and the city so we're trying to uh educate the community more of what you know could reimagine our city a healthier and safer uh City so that is copying on now the third I will send the information I did let you know a little bit Dr Lauria so um so we can send it to the community so if you guys want to join lastly
153I do want to um just I don't know like maybe a moment of silence or for uh the student that was murdered at East High School uh Luis Garcia 16 year old uh a few weeks ago he was shot and there was a walkout a few weeks ago also two weeks ago at the East High School I will be doing a presentation there on Monday uh I'm from a Premiere I made a documentary a movie called a good neighbor and it the students from East High School they're sustainable sustainability Club they chose my movie from 188 movies so I'm gonna be there on Monday uh to support them but I do as a parent I mean this is like really I did cry that day uh and uh just uh gun control and all that
154talking about security and all this stuff so I do want to just uh throw that out there for for our student 16 year old Luis Garcia from East High School thank you that's it and the only thing I have is to be out in the community if we want to go to conferences next week parent teacher conferences or Monday through for uh Thursday at all the schools the middle schools in the elementary schools starting next Monday secondary I believe is Monday Tuesday and elementaries are they're Wednesday Thursday compare teacher conferences I just think I I think it'd be great to be there because I know Dax gonna have some parents there and I think it'd be great to have us at some of those um so if we want to do that I know I'll
155be at both my middle schools at least and then pick two elementary schools yeah I agree I um I've gotten great feedback from my schools when we've attended so um yeah Ramona I don't know if you have the information from last year do you mind if we we do a similar thing where we just sign up so we know we have coverage at the schools one day or the other yes so did you have that yes so I um so first of all I wanted to say that we had our first Latina conference not this Sunday but the Sunday before it was very well attended it was all in Spanish so all our linguistically gifted moms that were able to attend from Commerce City it was amazing to see them and we're looking at doubling
156the days because we ran out of tickets so quickly and people were very inspired by it and because of that I also have uh that day we did a an interview with nine news because we have students from this District that belong to our youth advisory committee that is now called let me see if I remember this correctly which means validated voice and vision is what they came up with and so our youth Advisory Board is really looking at safety in the community so they got a grant through CDOT to be able to do this work about safe walking and drive riding their bikes safely and riding their scooters and so one of the things they had requested that I had totally spaced out until director Amador brought this up is they wanted to know
157if we could have a table yet again at parent-teacher conferences so that they can provide their survey to the students and the parents about the safety issues around walking and riding their bikes and scooters and they did this at the event on that Friday for the talent show and it was third draft they had come up with it on Monday and then we provided it on Friday but now they actually want to do an electronic version these kids have me going they're my bosses I tell them so they have me going and this is what they want to do so I went to publicly let everybody know that I am giving them a shout out because they are amazing students but they're amazing board members that are I mean we've been meeting for a month
158and they've come up with so many great ideas already so thank you awesome I did that survey it was great to see them there um is that something that we need to do anything on or I just want to see if that's okay I mean I don't think we need a vote on it okay that's awesome yeah thank you all right anything further nope all right at all that concludes our agenda for this evening um thank you board members staff and audience for your time this evening we don't have a study session in March because of spring break um I hope you all enjoy spring break and we will see you at the next regular meeting of the board on April 11th May I have a motion to adjourn emotion to adjourn second thank you
