Number three is tonight's student representative report to the board. Ladies, >> good evening. It is great to be back for another meeting. There's a lot going on in the valley this month, so I'll get

right into it. First off, a huge congratulations to senior tuba player Victor Nuen Hernandez for earning a spot at the PMEA state conference for band. He will participate in the state festival during the PMEA state conference held this week April 22nd to 25th at the Kalari Convention Center in the Poconos. Victor is the fourth student in the past 40 years to make states. Last week, Sun Valley helped mock interviews, which is a graduation requirement to prep students who are required to build resumes and cover letters and then share them with interviewers to get feedback and advice to prepare them for the real world. This Sunday is Sun Valley's track and track and field senior day where they where they will be honoring the seniors and also having a fundraiser where a portion of the proceeds

will go to the Eagles Autism Foundation. In addition, boys tennis will be having their senior night next Tuesday, April 28th, and girls lacrosse senior night Thursday, May 7th. Senior prom is May 8th and will be held at the Dupont Country Club from 7 to 11:00 with postp prom being hosted after. And finally, track chessmon championships will be May 5th where athletes will compete with other athletes in their league. Thank you. Hello. This month it was full of exciting events and a muchneeded spring break. The week coming back from this break, we had two main events. Mock crash and minithm. Mock crash, which was hosted on April 8th for all juniors and seniors, showed students the very real possibilities of deciding to drive irrespons irresponsibly. After the presentation full of student actors and volunteers, there was

also a presentation given by someone who had been through an actual situation where he continues to live with the consequences every day. The mock crash was very impactful and meaningful, teaching students responsibility and the power in their decisions. Then hosted on April 10th, Sun Valley had its very first minathon, a 7-hour dance marathon that raised money for Four Diamonds, an organization that supports families with children who suffer from pediatric cancer. Students had a blast while raising over $22,000 for the cause in their first year. One week later on April 17th, Sun Valley's class of 2027 had their junior prom at Drexelbrook. Students had has an amazing had an amazing time and the event was overall a smooth and perfect night. Unified track had its senior night on Monday, April 20th. They won the meet and

had a wonderful time celebrating their seniors. The unified program is also holding its rain rally this Friday on April 24th. Students will run through the water hose from a fire truck to raise money towards the entire unified program while having a great time. Within the next couple of weeks, there's also a lot of tests going on at Sun Valley. AP tests are going to be held during the first two weeks of May, where students will take their exams in hopes of showing off their hard work throughout the year. During this time, there will also be Keystone testing where students, if they're not taking the Keystone or AP exams, will start on a 2-hour delay schedule. Thank you. >> Thank you, ladies. >> Good job, Maggie. Maddie, were you part of the meet today? >> No,

was JV. >> No. explain why the numbers. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> It's been pretty good. Pretty busy. Um I'm counting down the days. I have 35 school days left. >> Um right now for senior year I'm prom. >> Yeah. >> Junior year is crazy. I just can't wait to get done AP tests. >> Yeah. >> How many AP? >> Six. >> I would not pay for that. >> I barely wanted to pay for two. >> Yep. >> We appreciate the >> Thank you, ladies. Number four on tonight's agenda is the DCIU report. Dr. Huber. >> Um, back in February, the DCIU board was informed about um, there's some anticipation of some federal delays in the Head Start, early Head Start funding cycle. Um, so the DCIU has submitted all the proper paperwork, but there's just

a lot of delays at the state and federal level about getting the the funding for the programs this year. Um, so they have a lot of contingency plans prepared to put in place if needed. Um, but all of the paperwork's been submitted. They followed up with a lot of local legislators to make sure that, you know, they're aware of the importance of getting the funding for these programs because it would be a huge impact on Head Start, early Head Start students across the entire county. So, that's a thing that we're kind of watching to see when the funding comes in and what happens as a result. And then the only other update I have is that um the DCIU is continuing to plan for a revised executive director search um because the first search as

we know did not yield any final candidates. Um there's a lot of planning in place. We're looking at opportunities to possibly hire an interimm in the meantime. Um but it's going to be an entirely revised search process that we're hoping to start. We've already started the planning part and hopefully get it out to everybody with a looking at more of a search firm this time instead of doing it internally. So, there's a lot that's going to come down with that, but um it's not final it's not finalized yet. Thank you for the update. Hopefully that uh search can reach out nationwide and get some uh get some good candidates from across the country. Uh number five on tonight's agenda is Dr. Mr. Steinhall's superintendent report. >> Thank you, Mr. Armor. Everybody here tonight for the

April board meeting. Our administrators, teachers, and students at the elementary uh statewide there was a glitch with the uh testing with all the online testing occurring now. There's no paper and pencil anymore. And our group was patient. They kind of waited it out a little bit and they were able to ultimately get the testing done for first day. So, you know, I mentioned this because the kids get, you know, very stressed out about it even though we tell them just do your best. It's not high stakes. You know, they know it's a different day. You know, they want to give their best. We're just really impressed with the attitude that they have about it. Um I've seen some uh cheer videos from kindergarten kids telling their upper classman, "Let's go do your best." I saw

a phenomenal student newspaper from Coburn in which they the the entire paper was advice for how to do well in the PSSA written by other students. So, it's just kind of really neat, but we try to make this testing event childfriendly. I still believe that this is something that's entirely unnecessary. It can be done a better way. Pennsylvania could be tested once a grade span. Uh but we're going to make the best of what we have to do. Uh registration for summer enrichment. Uh Dr. Kama has provided the board of kind of some of the updates. Uh we have grown in our number of offerings. It's been a big push to get kids involved in activities here in Pendulka this year. It's going to be a bigger p push next year, but that also includes

our summertime opportunities. So can be a long summer to a student, giving them an opportunity even to sign up just for one activity to kind of break that up a little bit, go have fun with friends, learn a new skill, be a kid. Uh we're just really looking forward to good summer enrichment program this year. kindergarten registration really pleased um 198 incoming kindergarters I was asked that question just now so that's the accurate number 198 are either registered or in the initial stages of registration now that is a significant jump uh from the previous year so we're pleased that the kind of dip and a little trough of enrollment may be over got big numbers again back to typically what we typically see which is low 200s but we're already at 198 and one of

the reasons why I think we have close to 200 was very successful successful Pendelo first kindergarten signing days that we have done in our school district and um I had the pleasure of being at all four of them at every one of our elementarymentaries. I want to thank our staff uh particularly Dr. Murray Allison Gangle who made it kind of turnkey events. We just showed up. It was ready to go. Uh we had HR tables at the events. We had tours of our bus. Uh the kids got to meet our mascots, got to meet the principles. parents and kids got to see our kindergarten classrooms so they're not have to worry all summer what's it going to like when I go to school and here they are some of our kids making a commitment they

were signing up like they're going to this school no transfer portal once you're in you're in and uh so we were I was just really really pleased with the entire kindergarten staff our nurses were out our registar was out um really fun event that I think can continue to grow every year and people will look forward to this as something special in Pendulko where we get to celebrate kids when they graduate in June and here we're celebrating kids when they come to us for the first time uh with the registration in April. Really nice 150 people. Yes. >> When you do your uh >> your presentation in 18 or 16 12 years, whatever. >> Uhhuh. You can bring these pictures back down >> in 2039 when you're going to roll the superintendent out in a

in a wheelchair, >> but we'll stock them away for whomever that might be. U the girls mentioned mock interview day, which was fantastic event, and every single year uh having an opportunity to observe this, I'm more and more impressed. But what means so much to me is that we have members of the community who walk up, they find me and say, "I I wanted to come and specifically tell you this just blew me away with the quality and the skills and the character of your kids." Um, there couple executives from Newman. Uh, one came up to me and just just could not speak highly enough. She said, "I wish the community knew more about the quality of the students that we have leaving Sun Valley." Um, and this is one step in that direction. So

great job at Sun Valley for mock interview day and really loved this event because this was student driven. So last year the students went to Mr. Ross and said we want to be a part of Minithon. We want to do an event raise money for the less fortunate or for cancer research. Um can we do that? And Mr. Rosco is like let me check with Dr. Stanov and I said it's up to you. The kids can do it. They want to do it great. So with the help of our adviserss and uh NHS u we had a great turnout. You know, it was it was it was great to just see students doing the right thing, having fun, blowing away their goal in terms of money that they wanted to raise for Four Diamonds, uh,

and knowing that all was for a good cause. So, it was a wonderful Friday night, busy time, active time. I just saw nothing but great things made me really proud of that group to see that event. So, that was first ever. Uh, they're already talking about how to make it even better next year and beat their goal. So, Coburn kindergarten comedy club happened and we posted that and it's it's always worth showing because frankly this was a challenge that we put to our teachers said how can we teach our seven C's, one of them being communication. How can we start teaching that as early grades rather than in high school and our wonderful kindergarten teachers like you know what we could do? How about we do this? We train kids to stand up on a

stage in front of a big group in front of a microphone, memorize a joke, tell a joke, and feel confident in their in themselves. And to see them leave the stage feeling so good, like, "Yes, I I did it. I did fantastic." You know, and then that upper far right corner, you'll see two kindergarten kids who played a joke on Principal Small and I, and they they were adorable, and they told us they had a snack of uh canned chips for us. And of course, when we opened up the can, out came the snakes, you know. So they loved it. It was a great little event and that's what how we start teaching real world skills. You know the a lot of adults are afraid to talk in front of a group. Here we have

kids six five and six years of age where we're starting to do that. Um then they pick it up first they do another event. Second grade is already working on it as well. So really really neat activities that we had over there. Uh the girls mentioned a mock crash right? So, it's all about let's not forget the really important things in life and for students to participate in that and see the consequences of distracted driving, unsafe driving, uh driving while impaired. Uh no, no matter how many times Sun Valley does this, it always has an impact on kids hopefully makes them think and do the right thing when they're out driving with unsafe conditions. So this Friday, uh, Northley track is going to send a a really good team, um, 4x1 team up to the

pen relays hoping to set set the goal. Uh, True Chubbs, who's third from the left there. I should note that he has already in middle school run a 206 half mile, which qualifies for nationals. That is a phenomenally fast time for an eighth grade boy. Uh, so we're really excited about him, but he he's also in the 4x100, too, so he's got to run fast as well. uh and shorter races. So, we're excited uh that that the boys feel proud of themselves are going to go up to pen relays on Friday morning. Uh we did receive a very large check, $5,962 from the Giant Foundation, uh feeding school kids initiative. So, when parents go to the Giant and they round up, that money actually does come back, uh to school districts. So, we use that

to help defay the cost of lunch balances and some other healthy eating initiatives. and we had that check presented to us this past month. U really appreciate that work that we have every year. Great things happening Pendel Co just in general. Uh Parkside with the leader and me program recently recognizing students who hit their personal goals. Um we have Aston students outside great vibe there. I want to mention that I did meet this week uh with Don Maine of MM Architects to begin the conversation about that facility. You know what options can be done. So, it'll take some time, but what I intend to have for the board is some u options and an assessment of the Aston Elementary School property. How can we freshen it up? Uh does it require a new rebuild? Uh

does it require an addition? We'll defer to the experts who will give us their assessment of the current state of that building and what options that we might have. So, we ask for a proposal to hear from them for to do that work. Typically their proposal is very reasonable for work the work that they've done with us because we have a good partnership with them throughout the year. Autism accepted month color prayed panel was very popular. You heard about Victor um heading up to the PMEA state conference only the fourth uh in that department in 40 years. Fantastic. You know I love our work with community outreach. You'll see comm Coburn third graders working on math skills and playing games at the True Wood senior citizen residents. And then we don't forget academics and engineering.

And there you saw Northley S Perch team. Look at all those kids involved. Fantastic group. They attended the Greater Philadelphia Phil Philadelphia Sea Perch competition. So it's been very busy week, a busy month. And look at this month coming up. I mean, it's almost like there's something every night. So we have the art shows and the course concerts. We have jazz in the valley, band concerts. Lot really on the uh arts end. I will note June 3rd the North Middle School steel pan ensemble is going back to the outdoor concert plaza at the Aston Community Center amphitheater. Um was at that last year was really impressed. It's very cool to listen to the steel band play kind of in a twilight period. So that if you can make it that well worth your time. Um

so we're really excited about the events that we have coming up and appreciate your support. Thank you. Thank you, Dr. Steinhoff. Number six on tonight's agenda is announcements for the public. Tonight, the board met in executive session to discuss personnel and litigation matters. Number seven, any comments by members of the board? Number eight, comments by the public on agenda items. There you go. Hit that. Uh name is Joseph Deput Live at 108 Donnelly Avenue. Uh not really a agenda of tonight's item, but just a simple overall question. Uh safety for the kids. I'm sure that's your number one priority. Uh, as you know, there has been recent incidents just trying to get your feel on true safety for the children and the awareness of children are going home and saying they were scared in this

particular incident. Uh, I for one, how can I say this without being being polite and respectful? I would like to understand more of like your actions about about this particular incident. I'm sure it's too too soon for you guys to come up with something. Uh but this is something that that near and dear to my heart. Safety for the kids should be always number one. I'm sure it is on everybody's mind here. I'm sure you all have kids as well. Uh, I'm just more worried about the kids who are nervous and scared and or the kids who could possibly be injured from this incident. Um, I'm sure you obviously are aware of this. Dr. Steinoff, you got an email from me earlier. Um, that's my mainly a round the bush question, but what is what

is your topic on that? What is your actual safety policy? So this is a public comment section. We can't talk about any students, any >> personnel. It's not something we agree. We do know about the situation. >> Just the policy. It's all I'm asking. >> That's correct. Uh we do policy follows what the state of Pennsylvania puts forth for special education for that. Uh we follow it strictly to protect the district and the rest of our students. Um, if you'd like to have a different conversation off the record, uh, we can share as much conversation as we can. Um, but we are limited as to >> what you could say. I know there's there's laws you can't say. You know, that's fine. Uh, sure. >> After after the meeting or outside or here. >> After

the meeting in here is fine. >> All right. Awesome. Thank you. >> Thank you. >> All right. tonight. Uh personnel starts on page five, six, page seven, concludes on page seven. There's administrative recommendation to approve these agenda items as presented. Do I have this motion? >> So move second. >> Questions or comments? All those in favor? >> Opposed? Motion passes. Uh item 10 starts with 10.01. 01 and flows through 12.01. Uh tonight we'll do a consent agenda. Uh does anybody wish to have anything voted on separately? With that, I need an approve a motion for approval of 10.01 through 12.01. Please note that all uh bids are subject to solicitors review. Do I have this motion? So move >> questions or comments? All those in favor? >> I >> opposed. Motion passes. Um any more

comments by members of the public? >> Comments by members of the board. Thank you. Um next meetings are Wednesday, May 20th here at the service center. We're not on the road next month. >> What's that? >> We're not on the road next month. >> No, we have retired here. >> Yep. Sorry. We'll be uh we every other month we've been doing on the road type show at our schools, but we have our >> Yeah, we have our retirees next month. So, we'll bring back bring back anyone who has retired throughout the school year to recognize them. Um and then Wednesday, May 27th, we'll have our 7:30 meeting here at the service center. Motion for a German move.
