003I Sun Valley senior class. We've got a lot going on at the Valley, so I'll just dive right into it. First off, this week on ABC News hosted by David Mir, Sun Valley was featured in a segment specifically our football players. Our senior football players continue the tradition of honoring teachers who help shape their journey by presenting their jerseys to their favorite teachers ahead of the time of the homecoming game. Next, Sun Valley's annual fall cabaret cabaret is tomorrow, Thursday, October 23rd at 700 p.m. in the Sun Valley auditorium. The show includes songs from musicals and TV shows or movies. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased online or at the door. All earnings will go to the Sun Valley Theater program. The first week of October, Sun Valley had our homecoming pep rally parade
004and game and the dance on October 3rd and 4th. The pep rally showcased our homecoming court choir, band, cheerleaders, and the student body and games and performances. In addition, we also honored our senior fall athletes, choir, and marching band members, and senior class officers. The homecoming theme this year was Philly sports, and the winners were announced at halftime. First place was the sophomore class, who were the Flyers. In second place was the freshman class, who were the Sick, yeah, Sixers. In third place was the senior class, who were the Eagles. And in fourth place was the junior class, who were the Phillies. Also announced at halftime was our homecoming king and queen Chase KT and Lucy De Mo. The homecoming dance was very successful having over 700 students attend. Next Thursday, October 30th, the Sun
005Valley Marching Band will be having their championship sendoff at the Sun Valley football stadium at 7 p.m. They will be competing at New Oxford. That Saturday will they will be portraying the world of Alice Wonderland. Good luck to our marching bands. Finally, last Thursday, Sun Valley hosted a college fair in the gym and it was very successful having both parents and students in attendance. Thank you. Hello, I'm Maggie Mucklo and I'm very excited to talk about the current events and sports going on. First, the student senate is holding a canned food drive throughout all rooms where the winner will receive a free breakfast. FCCLA is also conducting a winter clothing drive for the month of October to help families in need. First sports football cheerleading and marching band seniors will be recognized this Friday, October
00624th on football's last game. There will also perform a senior walk across the football field at the end of the game. We are also very proud of junior Ryan Messi who advanced and played at the District 1 Golf Championship. This marks the end of fall sports. Winter athletics are starting next week with physicals and resourcation forms being due next Friday, October 31st. With this, the Winter Club Ultimate Frisbee has begun. As registration will end this Friday, October 24th. It is $25 for each player and there will be a pizza party at the end of the season. This is Sonata's largest club with both teachers and students able to participate. The teachers are coaches of the teams or coaches of a team of students where they show great leadership and sportsmanship. Thank you. >> So, Maddie,
007how is uh college applications going? Uh, pretty good. Um, I got into Alberta University in Millersville. >> Okay. >> And I applied to the University of Tampa, University of Scranton, um, Pit, um, University of New Haven, and then I still have to apply to Penn State, American, and WY. >> That's a big list. >> Yeah. >> Well, if you get to University of Tampa, let me know. My niece goes there. >> Okay. That's off the list. So, >> and Maggie, I know you were at the college and career fair volunteer at Brown and Chess. What was your perspective on that from >> Oh, I loved it. I actually changed my number one to one of the schools that >> from that. >> Yes. >> Okay. What was the change you made if you want to
008tell us? >> I was looking at probably UT or UNCC and then I talked to the rep at University of South Carolina. It's like a perfect fit for me. So, >> suddenly you have an interest in going a little further south. >> Yes. >> Okay. Okay. Your parents will be happy with that or they won't be happy. My mom keeps trying to convince me and gossip and believing that I don't want to do it. But >> guys, and how's the general vibe at the high school this year? Because you guys do a nice job giving us a sense of all things are going on, but how's it feel? How's it feel going through the hallways? Are kids active? People I know we had a huge turnout for homecoming. I understand. >> Um yeah, it's uh
009pretty good. Um for homecoming especially, like I was really impressed with like the floats and stuff like especially the sophomore class winning really good float. >> Yeah. Yeah, it was good. It was very good. >> Yeah, it was really good. And even like the um the freshman did good, too. Like it was just >> They're good competitors. >> Yeah, they are. They were like really cuz we were like this trash talking at the community center and they were like and they're like I told you we beat you. >> Um but no, I think the underassment are really good like participation especially. >> Yeah. Which is something that we haven't had for a couple >> Yeah. We're known for not. So >> yeah, float's fantastic. Yeah. And you guys have a lot of people at your
010dance. >> Yeah, that was like it's like over 68% or like the school at the dance. >> That's terrific. Yeah, >> it's good to come back. There was a time people weren't going to dances, but they are now. >> Crazy. >> Okay. All right. Thank you, Lisa. Anyone? >> Thank you, ladies. Question. Thank you so much. >> Thank you. >> All right. Thank you for the college. >> Thank you. >> So, there is no DCIU report. Just to uh let every knowy Melissa is uh Dr. Hoover is there tonight. They are doing their starting their search for uh the new director of the DCIU. Tonight's starting of the first rounds of interviews. So uh I uh asked her to please make sure she was there. It's it's pretty important situation. So um number five tonight
011is Dr. Steinhol superintendent report. >> Thank you Mr. Armor. I'll uh present that from here so not in the way of the screen. So last week uh I appreciate the board giving us uh your time last Wednesday night. Uh had a very effective study session. Uh we reviewed and discussed tonight's agenda item, reviewed staffing and budget updates. Um reviewed an update on our off-site evacuation plans. Um I know Dr. Kamega had given you a heads up about that. Uh we're very pleased with the off-site evacuations that have happened so far. uh we get feedback uh from the uh chief of police or the uh or their representatives and it's very effective for us to make sure that we're really meeting the mark on those evacuation plans. Principles are doing a nice job keeping that communication
012going too as well to parents so they understand that these are just drills and we had an academic data reporting update and then I provided a number of general matters and updates from my office as well. So thank you for the time. So, it's hard to believe, but budget planning season um has begun. Uh my meetings with uh Mr. Zley and business office, we've started just to kind of begin to look at um kind of our financial state, right? We've had a our annual audit has been completed and we're waiting for those results. Um but we've taken an assessment on where we were last year. Um how well we did with last year's budget and begin to build that for the next one. Um, here's an item I just want to show you that um,
013sometimes I'll get questions u, from members of the public. Why do you have to raise taxes at all? And this chart shows over time going all the way back to 2008. Um, the uh, expenditures, the average expenditures in our region versus where we're at in green and orange. That blue line shows you the average expenditures per student in most districts, which is about $27,000 a student and Pendulk is at about 23,000. So, you know, it's I feel I'm very proud and impressed with what our staff does with the revenues that we have, but we also recognize that we just don't want to be a district that falls behind and doesn't maximize our potential. Um, so when people kind of feel like, oh, you budget too much, uh, you bring in too much money, you don't
014need to have that money, why do you keep raising the taxes? If this shows you very clearly, we have consistently provided outstanding education experiences for kids with below average revenue and below average expenditures. And we find ways to maximize what we do with our money. And that's the challenge. We put it where it matters, which is to our people. We want to make sure we have competitive salaries. We want to make sure we have competitive programs. We want to make sure we have strong facilities. We just don't spend money on fluff or things that we don't need. Um, but it's an area for us to keep in mind as we go forward because what I don't want to see happen is see our budget stagnate and then that gap between what other districts have to
015spend and what we have to spend actually grows larger. So, Friday, we are really excited. Uh on Friday morning at 10 a.m. we will have a Parkside Blue Ribbon Awards celebration. Um any board members are welcome till 10. I know some of you have told us if you can be there or not, but if your plans change Friday morning and you want to be there, you are welcome to come 10:00 a.m. Um we have the state representative will be there. We have cheerleaders from Parkside. We have mascots from all the schools involved. Uh we have music. Uh we have some um messages and some speeches from students. Uh then the rest of the day is going to be a fun day for students at Parkside. They have some activities planned. So it's just really a
016celebration day on Friday. It's going to be great. And here's something already uh getting ready. Ramp it up. I saw this on the wall here. Uh every student's hand uh was put together there. I had a hand in creating this blue ribbon school and that's up on the wall for a guest that will be coming in and there you see the work that they're doing with leader and me um with the seven habits. uh one of the reasons why really a lot of the things that they had in place a lot of the um effective outcomes and the achievement uh they're attributing that to a lot of the things that they've learned in the later May program. So should be a great morning. Uh we have purchased a blue ribbon shirt for every student. Uh
017we did that from the district and from the school board. So that'll be great. Uh we're just really excited about the morning and the people in Parkside are deservably very pleased too. You know, there only 13 schools that got that award this year out of over 5,300 in the Commonwealth of PA. And Parkside, you know, the little school with a big heart really came through for us. So, Northley uh is also experiencing some uh really nice some breathtaking changes. Actually, we've been talking about going back to Northley at some point in time and updating the look. Right. So, we had a really solid renovation years ago, but what we didn't really do was button it up a little bit and that has happened now. So, if you look at these pictures here, you'll see the
018brand new uh Turzo floor that we had in there and the blue match the existing blue came out fantastic. You'll see some of the imagery we put on the bare walls to kind of make sure the school branding is there. up front. Uh we had kind of an old dated uh display case there um that really was not that attractive, right? We cleaned that up a little bit. Number of other things that we did as well, right? We added in some signage outside of some of our doors so people know where where's the counseling office, where's the nurse's office. You look at the cafeteria down the lower left. Uh we put in some of the uh sound panels, the acoustical panels that will actually capture some of the sound waves and calm down the the
019cafeteria sound, but also has some of our branding in it. On the right hand side, you'll see we added um some more bulletin board spaces where we can actually put student work up throughout the hallways. You'll see new lighting that you see above in that lower right hand corner as well. That hallway was outside of the office and outside of the gym and a lot of people always felt it was kind of dark. you would come out of the volleyball games, you come out of the basketball games, that door, that hallway just felt unwelcoming and it's very bright now. Uh we also put that solid blue base uh all through the building ties it all in. Uh and then also fresh paint as well as you can see with that stripe. Those are some of
020the things that we've added. Um here's another wall uh outside of the uh the gym, home of the Vikings wall that we have there. Uh you'll see some of the tile that we put up all around the columns. Um you see some of the bulletin boards that we put up already. You have student artwork up there. Uh and then you'll see the backsplash tile that we put up around uh the water fountains and then also the Northland music hallway. So that was our goal in that job was to brighten it up, freshen up and give it some life and spirit. That's really coming together. And we have some more projects from um Sun Valley that will be applied to walls uh on November 3rd. Uh and then also some other projects that will be coming
021through in November and December. So really pleased with how that's going. I just want to thank everyone who participated in homecoming week. One of that was one of the better turnouts that I can remember in my 18 years here. Um really felt good about the community. Tons and tons of people from every school, you know, not just a lot from Coburn or not just a lot from Aston, but just a lot from Panel, a lot from Parkside, a lot from Northley Middle School. Um was a really really good night. Beautiful weather. Uh, you know, that starts with activities in the building all week long. A lot of school spirit, uh, great homecoming court, uh, wonderful efforts by our cheerleaders and marching band. Um, I just think they hit a home run on this one and
022it was just a wonderful night. So, uh, the girls mentioned, uh, the link, uh, I'm sorry, the, uh, tape that we had on, uh, Sun Valley Homecoming week where our athletes presented, uh, their jerseys to teachers that have made a difference. And we were shocked when we got the phone call uh, just two days ago with about 2 hours notice before 6ABC went on the national news uh, to run this wonderful little clip from Sunday. Tonight near the high school seniors and their teachers, America strong. Tonight, homecoming season is here. And in Pennsylvania outside Philadelphia, the Sun Valley High School football seniors surprising the teachers who they say shaped them. Wide receiver Kaden Mortwor surprising his English teacher Julie Malone. >> I would be honored to wear your jersey. Offensive lineman JP Griswald walking into
023his teacher's classroom. Mr. Pass >> giving my jersey for homecoming to a teacher who's impacted me throughout my high school career and I don't think anyone more as my coach and teacher has been here. So >> appreciate and right here tonight. >> Hey David. Hi David. >> Hi David. What's up David? >> Members of the Sun Valley High School football team the seniors of David. >> I chose Mr. because he will make learning fun every day and I'll look forward to his class. A bright light to my day. I can always trust her to help me find something. JP who chose Mr. Passer. He's been my coach and my teacher for the past four years and he's been a real big influence. >> Ryder Strickley JP my mentor for the past 4 years. I always
024look forward to going to their class. >> And joining us too. >> Hey David, >> the teachers who made a difference and were not forgotten. Mr. Lopez. To me getting Steven's jersey was it meant the world to me. Uh it's reassuring to know that I can be there for someone whenever they need it. >> Michelle, >> he actually said like you can you sparkle up my day and that made me feel really great because that means that I did make an impact and that really is uh so special to me. >> And Mrs. Bachepski, >> it really meant the world to me. You don't really know how much you're impacting their lives until something like that happens. Well, we love this tradition and it's spreading Sun Valley High School and beyond. I'll see you tomorrow.
025Good night. >> How cool is that? >> But just interesting that um so often you know we see things on the local news but you know for our kids from the high school to be able to say I was on the national news is really something. Uh, and I give credit to Allison Gangle who's here tonight, you know, communications coordinator who put the video together that was posted on Facebook. Um, that had thousands of views and that got to their attention. So, just really neat. Uh, it was wonderful group of guys recognized. Um, I'm glad that our teachers, it means a lot to them. I heard from a lot of people sent me text that evening like, "Oh my gosh, I just saw this. How great Sun Valley, you know, it's wonderful." So, um, it's
026one great experience and just was good feelood moment. Someone had texted me and said, "So nice to have that after having to deal with all the political news. It just makes me feel like awful." And then I feel like great seeing like really good positive things about kids for the future. So let's move through this next item. So great presentation uh representation rather by uh particularly our representatives from PDA or teacher groups out at our community days. Uh again wonderful part of the fall. Um this year we had some valley uh PBIS tables out as well. of students sort of part of the PBIS program wasn't even aware they were doing this had a table out talking about the program and what they do to promote really good positive behavior and character initiatives at the
027high school. Um but we're always pleased with our teachers and the turnout that they have at Brook Haven Family Day is an outstanding event and the Aston community day is terrific. I know Parkside has been moved to the uh spring and we'll be at that as well. We're really excited to bring back uh Ryan Green, a Norfolle graduate uh who's now a phenomenal performer, Giuliard fellow. Uh and he was there to talk to our kids about, you know, following your dream. And he gave them a message. It was like, you know, you can be the person that you want to be. Like I was just like you. I was a student at Northley Middle School and I had the dream and now I am a professional composition uh composer and professional musician. and he was
028just a wonder to wonder to hear. So, it was just great to have a Northley grad back talking to our Northley students. We had a number of couple of our board members uh spent the last couple days at the passive PSBA school leadership conference for exist uh additional training along with Dr. Kim went up representing the administration. I want to thank uh you guys for making that uh time. I know it's you know Sunday for a couple days and then you went up to attend these training sessions and represent our district. We really appreciate that as well. Tomorrow night, uh, Sun Valley High School will have a very popular event, their cabaret that they have, theater cabaret every fall. Songs from stage and screen that will start at 7:00 p.m. Uh, tickets are available. Purchase
029at the door or in advance, but wonderful event that always blows folks away. Uh, we weren't sure about flu shots, but we are offering that again now. We have a new provider, Springfield Pharmacy will provide flu shots for students and staff uh on Tuesday, October 28th. Want to thank HR for making sure that that occurred. A lot of people to thank on that. Just reminders, we uh are closed on election day and we also close on that Monday, but both will be teacher inservice days. So, our staff will be working um but students will have a uh welldeserved 4-day weekend that weekend. And then as we look ahead, um I think we'll be meeting on the 19th, but American Education Week is coming up. Uh we're really thrilled uh to do some things on social
030media uh to really point out the incredible support that we get from our staff, our power educators, our clerical staff, bus drivers, technical specialists, student service workers. Just an opportunity to really talk about how important public education is to this country. Every child, regardless of wealth, regardless of family status, every child in this country has an opportunity to become somebody with a free and appropriate public education. And we do a phenomenal job for the students in Aston, Brook Haven, and Parkside. We'll be meeting again quickly for study session on November 12th and then the voting meeting on the 19th and that gets moved up because of the Thanksgiving holiday. That's all I have for tonight. Thank you, Dr. Stein. Announcements for the public. Tonight, the board met in executive session to discuss personnel and litigation
031matters. Any comments by members of the board? I would like to say uh a heartfelt thank you to our teachers and administrators that made their way out to our local um community days. that's, you know, they take time out of their schedule, usually on a Saturday, spend some time with community. Um, not that it's necessarily required, but they they like to uh be out there and see the kids that they teach and see every day. Um, as well as the teachers that were that were recognized by the football team uh there as making a difference. Um, one of my biggest things that I that I like to say, um, you know, when I want welcome back our teachers in the spring is Pendulko employees and staff and teachers are here because they want to be,
032right? Um, we have a great system. We have a great uh, you know, we feel like we're competitive in the pay, but let's be honest, every probably most of our teachers could go to Chester County and but they're here because they want to be >> and they enjoy the schools. they they take pride in it and and that video that we just saw goes to show that the they make a difference in our kids' lives. So, we appreciate that. Thank you. Anybody else? Any comments by members of the public? All right. Um we'll start with uh bonus board action is item nine. Um, this references appendical budget 2025 through 2026 act 93 plans PDA agreement to PDSPA agreement PDSPA agreement PA school code section 1110B. It is administrative recommendation to approve all personnel items as
033presented. Do I have this motion? >> So moved. >> Second. >> Any questions or comments? All those in favor? >> I opposed. Motion passes. Tonight we'll have the consent agenda for items uh 10.01 through 10.09. Any uh director wish to have it anything for vote on separately. With that I need a motion to approve 10.01 through 10.09. Please note that all bids are subject to solicitors review. We have this motion. >> So moved. >> Second. Questions or comments? All those in favor? >> I opposed. Motion passes. Any comments by members of the public? >> All right. Any comments by members of the board? >> Yeah, I just want to double click on the the video as well. That was it is really great to see the good news. And so Allison, thank you especially because
034I know it that's not something that is easy to put together and then when you get short notice like that to, you know, get everything buttoned up. So really nice job there. It was really great to see that. And then also thanks to uh Northley, Mr. Shioone, and the ptl uh had their haunted hallway and dance the other night and I know everything went really smooth and it was a great event. So thanks to those guys as well. >> Thank you. >> Anyone else? All right. Uh, next meetings we have our study session as Dr. Hot Steinoff just said, November 12th here at the service center and November 19th we'll have our school director's uh, formal meeting at 7:30. Motion for adjournment. So move. >> Second.
