it takes just a couple minutes and then so should pass 6-0 [Music] remember the elections of uh president and vice versa [Music] is sure nominations uh i mean james is the vice president this year i assume that he would be proven to be doing it again i was kind of sticker or not but i make a motion to uh he liked james thickens his vice president yeah i talked to him you don't have to make a motion [Music] i think everybody should at least be something sometimes [Music] um has anybody else even thought about doing it you can understand well i'll nominate mr lucas for president vice president any other okay somebody want to make a question together but then we have to decide which one we're going to put the piece in the blank
between james jameson oh right so we have i think there's a three now so one for president two for vice versa okay sorry yeah so you need to decide on your vice president okay so let's we're just going to do a roll call on lucas or james for vice president so how many for lucas uh shane her doctor [Applause] together with one motion so lucas or james that's correct which one are you raising your hand for lucas okay okay education for burlington unified school district 244 for 2021. said go down your computer and uh correct that would be an eye for both okay we all vote on our computers oh those are past 16 right do i do the need [Music] or changes or additions to the consent agenda i'm being heard i make a
motion to accept the consent agenda as presented [Music] a yes from the phone and a 6-0 pass approval we'll move on to written concerns there's a list of students that score 90 or higher on language math reading and the science math major of academic progress assessments they're going to be recognized at their respective buildings we just wanted to let you know and so you can see the list of students and their excellent achievements so they're listed below and this is based off of which test the nature of academic progress math testing practice and our administrators and staff they feel like the math tests are probably the best assessments that we give because they have you can show progress they are given multiple times throughout the year a lot of different it's not just a one-shot
deal like a state assessment if you will so again lots of good lots of good student scores there and improvements and these are all the things we hand out usually at a basketball game but this year we're just going to be at the buildings yes and last year we decided to do them in the buildings we were going to do it at the end of the year [Music] each building will set up a time to recognize the students all right then concerns of usd 244 patrons [Music] okay written items most of them are on there we also put um 21st century students made all the cards that were at your okay we'll move on to food service uh anna hess wanted to uh extend a special thank you to uh the people at the god
storehouse starly hatch and jay hale for the use of their walk-in freezer during our transition from our freezer to our high school when we uh put in a new unit there over christmas break we had to have a place to put some food it's a vine storehouse came to the rescue for us and we greatly appreciate starlie and jay and the people about storehouse so she wanted to note you know their their service to us and then there's also did you send them a thank you yes go ahead and cut you off no no that's okay all right maintenance director report and then margarita solano wanted to thank again uh about storehouse people but he also wanted to thank alan schneider and the burlington electrical department they helped us put the freezer rooftop compressor unit
that project was a quite vital reveal but alan and his crew at the city again they uh they were terrific to work with and we wanted to thank them and then also like i say margarita want to thank starley and jay at storehouse as well so is this going to be something we're going to have uh listed from now on a food service and maintenance reports they just they they wanted to know if those uh those those couple of events um so i don't think it's a bad thing to have give them the opportunity to tell us stuff every month i sure could extend the opportunity to them if they would like to just have open it up to them and say look if you got stuff to tell us put it in there okay
and i mean if they don't have anything or i mean i mean i think that'd be good i mean all those people have kind of important jobs in our system sure and letting doug tell us about everything because he does maintenance ground maintenance and all that grass water and transportation it's not like they have to but we should open it up to them okay all right move on to elementary school and barla is with us via starley she's gone yeah she's got her own chair is she the only one up early she is uh mr reed mr white pins are at the high school band pokeball and i think that's anybody [Music] um no questions we move on to the middle school oh i just wanted to say darla i thought your elf on the
shelf visit was really awesome all yeah now we'll move on does anybody have any questions at all for middle school pretty short short time around yeah nothing to be popped up since we're over all right we'll move on to the high school which you know where they're at you have any questions second and they might be here it depends on how long the meeting goes so they're wrapping up with the concert so they may join us and if you do you can if you have questions they don't show up but if you guys have something we'll come back to it or we can make sure we get addressed but if nobody has anything we'll just move on we sure can alright special education nothing new other than i'm sure my positions have changed obviously we
have a retirement that is going to pop up tonight and then it's kind of that time of year with a little bit of fair turnover but we are getting these filled back so um got two more last week we hired two last weeks so we're starting to get back we're not very bad maybe two to three right now so that's really not too bad at all all right all right move on to technology [Music] questions all right we'll move on to superintendents before well january is board of education uh month so again i want to thank all of you for your service i do have some certificates for you guys we'll forgo the handshake and i'll just hand out the certificate again being a board member is challenging in the best of times let alone
throw in a pandemic like we had to deal with and uh you know it's a it's quite a challenge quite an obstacle uh you know to deal with um just unheard of you know again the things that we had to deal with here in the last nine to ten months so uh again i want to thank all of you for your service to the community i greatly appreciate what you do for us and i i greatly appreciate your leadership of working together uh on the great things that are happening in usd 244. uh there's one slide here that you can see up on the screen here it talks about 116 hours that we have to fulfill uh from the state department of education they have the state board of education has made this proposal where
we can waive up to 20 hours for professional development so for example what we did with the high school for those two days of training and getting ready for it and we had to go remote learning again we were able to waiver those hours if it's as long as it occurs between december 1st 2020 and april 30th 2021. so those two days of training to get us ready to go remote those don't count as miss days had staff saying we're gonna have to make those up no we do not have to make those up so essentially with 20 hours if you think about a seven hour school day it's about a three a three day scenario that you have that wiggle room to be able to do staff development and preparation if you have to
go remote or if you have to go hybrid so um again you can see the list of things on the third bullet point that you can use that time for we don't necessarily we hope that we don't have to go to a remote or a hybrid situation elementary or middle school but if we do we would do a two-day similar scenario for training like we did with the high school but again our hope is that we don't have to do that uh hopefully we'll stay on site the rest of this uh this semester in elementary middle school if we were to have to go into a remote or a hybrid scenario we'd take those two days plan get rolling just like we did with the high school if the high school had to go back
to remote or a hybrid scenario they wouldn't need the two days because they're already set they're ready to go if they need to any questions on the 116 hour requirement that's what's in place right now yeah doug did you recognize any technical issues that we would have to deal with if we had to go remote again that failed the first time or we needed to tweet no we just you know we were fortunate that we were talking about just one building jane to be honest i mean we didn't we didn't stress out we had in terms of we had three or four hot spots that we needed to get out to kids and certain families and and so we were able to handle that load what would worry me a little bit if we get
into a two building three building scenario you know what what's that going to look like for some of those families that have minimal level of internet we did get under a couple of different grants uh an additional dozen access points so we've got we're kind of sitting at the ready if we need to but our teachers really did a nice job our kids did a good job of responding and then we partnered with some places like the rec center the libraries you know we did some of those types of things again to try to do the best we could so and the results the results were positive they were concerned but the results were positive all right and then the last part of my report i asked lori johnson to join us she is our
parents as teachers rep for our program here if you remember we fund her position through the jones trust grant that we have through emporia and uh lori talk about challenging with parents who teach this program i could meet with parents and go into homes and so on so forth or do remote or doing type meetings uh she has quite a challenge but really i just appreciate lori's efforts and what she does for us really looking forward to her connecting with our daycare program and our staff there just to make it to just excel and and just looking forward to some great things so lori i will turn it over to you okay well thanks for having me and thanks for all you guys what you guys do for the district um it's a pleasure to
be here i don't know how many of you know what parents as teachers is so i'm just going to give you a quick spill it's a free voluntary program for families that have children prenatal direct to kindergarten with our preschool programs a lot of parents go ahead and just exit out at three that we do have the capabilities of serving the families until six and parents as teachers in a nutshell i gave you the folder and i pretty much go into families homes that want me there and we do all kinds of things we work on development i bring in an activity and i did put in your folder an activity page and some handouts that i would typically take around 22 months and so the child's getting ready to be two um but pretty
much every family i try to serve individually so we talk about you know what you want to work on and so i may answer questions about nutrition health discipline is a big one transitions we talk a lot about getting ready for school and things that they can do by just simply reading to their child every day um along with the the activity and we talk about developmental topics i also help them with their family well-being and that has been quite a challenge with the pandemic but i have been able to provide for my five spots for families so if we are doing it via zoom we can talk and then the families can use it for other things too so they will have their my five boxes for at least a year um what is
that whale is like a hot box that they can keep in their home and have internet yes yes yeah but i've been very fortunate we have done a lot of outdoor visits and then when it became cold we mask up um in december i did choose to go to zoom just because there's been a lot of things going on and it's really hard to control the environment in people's homes so i'm hoping things will settle down and i can get back into the homes along with the personal visits we also typically do what's called group connections and once we're done with pandemic we'll get back on that uh typically we need at the library and we do activities it's a great time to get parents to get together with other parents with kids the same
age another big point that i do is screenings yearly i do developmental screenings on and i do hearing and vision i have hearing equipment that i take into the home and then another big part is i just share lots of resources with parents like right now we've been using a lot of god's storehouse and i helped somebody today keep their electricity on so lots has been going on with that type of thing um and i'm just going to open up questions i've kind of rambled how many do you have i mean do you serve families you might remember we used to do it for a child and now we do it for family so i might have one to three kids in the family that i'm serving good so awesome and how did it get
to you well i i count on the hospital uh to pass my information along and um the health department and then they call you yes so they just get you just try to get your information but they have to initiate it you don't go i mean you don't go talk to them specifically and say here's an opportunity i try i mean you know like there's a like a library activity or something i might show up there and pass out flyers um i used to sit with meetings and hand stuff out um and then i do have a facebook page i put my card in there be sure to like that page and you can keep up to date on what's going on but we are full um and i really haven't lost any families over
in candy so that 25 is the max number for right now yeah if we went over that um we would go to a waiting list but they would still get invites to all of our group connections they would get a monthly newsletter and certainly if the family had a need we would try to figure things out like i said a lot of families go ahead and exit when their child starts preschool is it still every six weeks or often yeah that's changed too i see families once a month and then high needs families twice a month wow that's awesome so no nobody's on the waiting list as of right now no it's just kind of kind of a perfect number but i would like i mean if you guys have put flyers in there that's
the best way to tell families about this from word of mouth i think because when they hear about it sometimes it's like well i don't want this lady to come into my house and it's just real casual we sit on the floor and we do activities and just visit i know at the hospital um our opinions who sit down with each mom prenatally to talk about basically how their delivery is going to go and kind of go over some options with them but i do know that they present this material at that time and michelle and bail say she's probably one of your biggest advocates because you had identified a speech delay of her kiddo and so she sings your praises so she's probably the biggest advocate of this program and that so i'm i'm
sure that information definitely gets passed along to every mom that we see at the hospital yeah i would like to at some point get more information in the clinic you know where families can get it because they don't always want to sign up that sure first that maybe when the two-year-olds start to test the limits and they might want to call me do you know who to talk to you that's the point but sam uh yeah coolman is the clinic director so she's probably the first one to make sure because they have they're a rural health clinic so there's certain things they can and can't do for people and certain things i don't know i would think this would be totally fine but i don't know because there's some weird rules there if you want
to get stuff in there and start with her and then find out if she says there's any restrictions to how things enter the clinic oh okay because there may be some information some things the way it flows through the clinic can't happen in the clinic like i can't see people in that clinic okay so me as a physician i have i can't go in the clinic and see patients i have to see them somewhere else because it's a rural health clinic designation thing and they have these weird information rule transfer data transfer things that you'd have to just ask her my assumption is there isn't anything but the best way is to ask her she should know all those answers and that would be your best way to figure out a way in okay that
sounds good thank you unless you think it's a different way and correct me if i'm wrong i think lori when we first started back with the program a few years ago uh i think we started out with 20 slots didn't we at 15. 15 actually was 15 and so we've upped our number of slots we've gotten some additional funds from the jones trust grant the mobilizing literacy grant and we did see a need to get to 25. so it seems like our right number right now because we don't have a waiting list and we are full so it's a terrific terrific situation for us we got some additional funds we were able to increase our slots and keep lori busy in other school districts let them know you do the whole county i do leroy
wrigley and burlington and then francis ramirez does any other questions i just really appreciate you guys supporting early childhood it's so important these little kids and their parents are their first and most important teacher thank you we'll need some more thank you yes yes i have that all right we'll move on to board reports anybody mike do you have anything updates uh tracy sent that out to all of our administrators directors uh to look already tracy and i reviewed these these will be pretty simple and pretty easy to go over for the most part if you look at that first page it's e b is in boy b is in boy d there's just some working there that we need to put in on that one it talks about in that second sentence that uh
dismissed from school only by the superintendent just or does it need we put that word in there or does it need for that uh that blank there and then going down a little bit further school closing announcements and that last blank there we want to include like social media and we'll just say school notification system so social media and school notification system because our school notification system has changed from typos to now it's ever bridged we'll just put that term school notification system in there and save a specific uh specific type that the rest of the the changes are already spelled out by kasp in the red so unless you have other questions or comments we would make the suggestion recommendation that we would go with the kasb changes no one having any objections to
that let's go ahead and make a motion to approve the december 20 ka sb policy updates as presented and reviewed by the administrative team with the stated additions second all those in favor vote plus mike [Music] dni zero and we'll move on to personnel as far as i know there's some no issues we'll move on to superintendent contractor make a mission to approve a contract with craig marshall superintendent for the 2021-22 and 22-23 school years [Music] mike move on to principal contracts i make a motion to approve a contract with stationary high school principal dave watkins high school assistant principal slash athletic director matthew spring middle school principal and darla long elementary school principal for the 2021-22 and 20 20 22-23 school years it's like all those in favor of what on your computer or
opposed mike 6-0 we want to certify director contracts motion to approve a contract with lindsey graham special education director doug vander linden technology director and craig coleman assistant technology director for the 2021 2022 and 2022-23 school years second all those in favor or opposed to vote on your computer [Music] mike so just a curiosity question pass six zero curiosity question is uh like margarita and dana not on this because they're not certified positions yeah margarito uh and diana has another labor reward they're just not certified right yes well they're not um they're not they'll be on the classified event by the fight administrator yeah classified as classified directors next month okay good question i shouldn't accept the retirement request of stacey moddy with regret as school psychologist effective june 1st 2021. i'll say all those
in favor are opposed i do want to say my thing before though she has made a tremendous difference in many lives in this district including my son two of my sons and we are going to miss her a lot there is zeroed out whether you personally like it or not stacey body fights for your kid she doesn't care who uh it's mad at her she it does what's best for your child so i really appreciate that mike yeah everybody else vote on your computer for ordinance move on to results report so this is kind of bigger she [Music] um line here um is pretty consistent across all of them um our classes are spawning right now or right above the national means that's basically the last [Music] consider um benchmark that is one benchmark all
of those graphs are interactive um [Music] um [Music] number um [Music] um the small number of people that you kids that you see during the winter are either kids that have moved in or kids if we want to see progress um that we have been working with but again [Music] next week is grade level collaboration in content areas and we're going to start looking at this what are some of the trends we have certain areas where kids aren't growing where they should be so as we dig into this next week i hope we'll have some more answers just to clarify some of the two about two lower marks are kids that recently moved or that have moved in or there are a group of kids that would want to see who want to check their
progress from the fall to winter and so that's telling us that all those who checked are at risk yeah yeah yes they're at risk to start with too they were to start with and we tested them and they're still efforts yes but they could they still have grown but they're still in that risk category all right zarla okay um process within our building [Music] by the grade level so i have two graphs here that we kind of the areas that we concentrate on the graph on the left is what we look at for kindergarten [Music] oh so one of the big things that we've kind of looked at on these graphs and some it used to present this a lot of triangular form graph and it shows an anti-clone but what we really wanted to
see happening is [Music] uh
