speak. >> All right, Chad, you're going to be on speaker phone. The microphone right at my phone so we can hear you loud and clear. >> Okay, >> good. >> All right, good evening everyone. Like to welcome to this evening's uh school board meeting. I first like to announce uh we just came out executive session for personal legal um advice. Next secretary lead us in the pledge of allegiance. >> I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. 002to our meeting this evening. >> Thank you, Jen. Oh, I I didn't finish the rest of the roll call. >> Okay, go on. >> I was thinking it was unusual, but I was going with it. Um, Lee Dalton >> present. >> Dr. Brad Sterner >> here. >> Dr. Shannon Myers >> here. >> Justin Pier >> here. >> Okay, this time I think I got everybody. Welcome everybody. Sorry about the confusion. >> All right. Thank you very much. Uh, next up on the agenda is public comment. Um, at this time we'll open the floor for public comment. Each speaker is limited to five minutes. When you come forward, please state your name, municipality for the record. All comments should be directed to the board uh president or vice president. Please be aware the board will listen

and take notes. We will not respond during this portion of the meeting. If a follow-up is needed, the board will direct the superintendent to address your concerns following the meeting in a timely manner. Thank you for your cooperation. You come up to >> right now. Right now. Okay. >> Hi everybody. >> Hi. Hi. >> My name is Nicole Nelson. >> Um we have lived in New York Springs from 2003 till now. Um, this is my husband, Jason Nelson, and we came here tonight to let you know of what has what happened with our son because we are standing with um the Thomas on everything that has happened within Bermudeian Springs um with bullying and we want to tell our son's story of what happened to him in middle school. again it it has been since

>> 2013 was when it came to a head. >> Yeah. So I mean it was >> but 2000 from 2005 to 2013 our son was bullied by the same child and it was terroristic threats from kindergarten on it was I'm going to put a um a rope around your neck and hang you. I'm going to come over and set your house on fire because they lived right around the corner. He knew where we lived. He was on the bus. He constantly was doing things to our son from kindergarten on. We had talked to Mr. Stra to no end. We were in there every day in elementary school. We got him through elementary school. Went to middle school and then we had to we had to deal with Mr. Fleming and that was a nightmare. >>

Yeah. That abs that went absolutely nowhere by the way. And um the last straw because I I had had it wi with this school district and and not doing things for my son that he needed help with. He was on a 504 plan. Um we had to talk to the teachers constantly because the teachers weren't doing what they were being told to do. They were um belittling our son in front of the the class. And when teachers do it, >> the kids are allowed to do it. And so he had a math teacher, Mrs. Deetsz, that would say, "Oh, Cody, it's your time to go to um your special room because you can't take a test with us." These are things that should not be happening in this school district. We dealt with it constantly.

I felt like I was in there every day that he was in there. And they would say, "Hi, Mrs. Nelson. What can we help you with today?" It was constant. my husband had to go in and talk to the um the gym teacher because my son >> because right because with the gym teacher, believe it or not, he actually used to be he was a lot smaller when he was in middle school. >> And he was just starting to to play sports and lift weights and things. And those of us that have lifted weights, you know, y'all know we got to start somewhere. Well, he was starting somewhere. And he had a gym teacher take take a pencil and tell him that this is where he needs to start. What kind of what kind of

>> in front of all the kids >> role model is that? What kind of teaching is that? And he was dead serious because the guy was a I'm not going to say what he was, but I didn't like him. Um, the guy was an idiot. And I'll put it like that. And I personally have lifted weights for 17 years. I was a I was a strength and conditioning coach for I'm not from here. I'm from Westminster. I was a strength and conditioning coach for my high school. I was I mean I've been in several different weightlifting competitions. I know how to lift weights and I did for a long time. And that really got to me that because when you have somebody in there like that, you know, you just want to take the guy

and like show him show them how it makes you feel and you and you really can't. >> he had to publicly apologize but >> our son because he did it in front of everybody. >> But and if he's doing that if he's doing that to our son, how many other kids did he do it to? And then it's letting the other kids know that it's okay to bully this child >> because he's not as strong as they are at this particular point in time, you know, and you know, because not everybody starts off benching 400 lb and squatting six, you know, 67 800 lb. Not everybody does that. Not everybody starts out, you know, being defensive lineman of of the year. I mean, not everybody starts that. Not every [clears throat] team starts out winning

their conference. I mean, it doesn't it doesn't start like that. You know, you have to build up to that in anything that that you do. And that's what we were trying that's what I was trying to teach him and my other son. My other son's actually in college but and he's not here but that's what we were trying to teach you know anybody like that. And when you have teachers constantly standing in your way doing that stuff there's no way to really do that. >> So then it became an issue with the teachers. But then um it came to a head at the end of seventh grade which was um 2013. Um, our son was pretty much um, he was backhanded three times like three times in school by that one child. We had gone

to the parents, we had talked to them, they did not care. We went to the school constantly. They did not care. >> And that day he comes off the bus, his face, the whole side of his face is completely red. So I asked him what happened. The only thing the bus driver saw was him going over the seat. >> So, long story short, he ended up punching the other kid. >> Yeah. One time >> because he had had enough >> because he had taken three back hands to the face. >> I literally got slapped three time and he had had enough. So, he went up over the seat and punched the other kid to get him to stop because the other kid was not going to stop. And everybody that was on that bus was

a witness to that. >> But before we get there, we I went in that night without my husband with Cody and I had Cody tell Mr. Fleming what had happened. So then um got nowhere. He does have no [clears throat] affect about anything. He doesn't take he could care less about talking to a woman and I know that cuz he's he acts that way. So I said you will see the cops here in the morning. I am calling the police and he is they're going to meet us here and they will interview every one of those kids because my son is not going to get in trouble for this. We had had a paper trail from kindergarten to seventh grade >> about this child. >> The school knew about it. >> And I said, um,

so the next the next day the cop um met us at the school, interviewed every one of those kids, told them what my son had taken before he went after him, corroborated his story. So that kid, that's the only way that we could get that kid off of the bus. He was he was taken off of the bus, but my son still had to deal with him in school. I asked I point blank asked Mr. Fleming. I said, "What is it going to take for you to to keep my son safe? Is it going to take him being seriously injured or worse killed?" >> And we did ask. He said, "Honestly, yes." He said that to me >> because he was a he. >> So, >> yeah, he >> he took him out. We cyber

we started cyber schooling because I was not going to let my son >> be another statistic >> and the school knew about all this. It's not like it's not like any of the teachers didn't know about it. When we say when we say the teachers knew about it >> from day one, >> she's not kidding. We walked into this, we walked into schools. Can I help you, Mr. Nelson or Mrs. Nelson? Every single teacher in there knew about it. >> The counselor, the principal, the vice principal, the superintendent, everybody. There was no even regular teachers that didn't know about it, >> you know. So, >> this is this is a problem now that we hear that something else has happened and worse. >> Yeah. that a child has lost his life because he didn't feel

safe coming to this school. When is somebody going to listen? >> I mean, we are happy that even with the security coming in that that to me is is very good. That's one of the things that I actually went in front of the school board about 10 years ago, 10 to 12 years ago, because over here in the elementary school, you go in at night, all the doors were open. The doors were not locked >> in the morning. They were open >> and they were because I walked in I walked in the basement door and I walked up and just I mean now I I knew people there but you know and I didn't come in the I didn't come in the front cuz I wanted to prove a point saying that you know >>

he he held as it was >> and I didn't like >> it was a little rocket it was a little rocket um lunchbox >> and he held it out >> and it looked kind of weird. I mean, you never know what >> he was dirty from work, came home from work, went right into the school, walked all throughout the school. >> Yeah. >> With this bag that he held out like this. Not one teacher, not one student, nobody said a thing to him. >> And the door still wasn't locked after that. And then, you know, I went to the school board and it took like two or three weeks in order for to get one door locked. You know, now I don't know obviously, you know, that was 10 years ago. I don't know that

it's I mean obviously something's changed because we do have and that's actually really good but you know do we do know that you have to take different you know small steps but I don't know >> and so Cody what would he's now a a nationally certified EMT >> well so I was getting there I feel like I learned more in the four years that I was pulled out of the school when I was here the entire eight years that I was here and [clears throat] you know now I am a nally certified EMP I'm state certified I'm a FEMA disaster relief EMP So, they call me tomorrow. I'm I'm going. And that's one of those things. I'm actually fairly high ranked at my job and I actually graduated top of my class uh in EMT

school for for a reason. And like I said, I personally feel because of the teaching staff, because of everyone else here, I honestly learned more outside of here than I did here. >> And it's because you're constantly bullied every day. You know, when you're belittled and and not taken seriously because you don't fit in because we just moved here 12 years ago. It was ridiculous. And there was definitely, trust me, I want >> Well, there there was definitely like an old boy club and it was annoying as crap and it was very obvious. >> What you guys need to understand? >> Well, there's three of us. >> So, what you guys have to understand, just a minute. What you guys have to understand is that kids that are the bully the bully can let it

go. The bully can put it down and not think about think about it that night. Kids that are bullied cannot. Every night we had to go around to every window in the house and make sure they were locked. Every night we had to talk about him to him about how to um if he couldn't get away what he should do. He we had to put him in karate because we were scared >> of which he's now a black belt >> for him for his safety. I mean, these are things that a kid that's bullied cannot let go of. The scars do not go away. Go ahead. >> So, every day I had the books knocked out of my hands. I was pretty much pushed down the stairs every day in the old middle school. We

all know how hard those stairs were. I've fallen down my personal, but uh those those two flights of stairs going around in the U, I was pushed down those every day. uh the orange lockers that used to be over there. Somebody would always cut my lock and shroom my stuff all throughout the hallway. I still have friends remember that and we still talk about that every time, you know, we go out and eat and hang [clears throat] out and everything else. And then I'd have to go pick my stuff up in the middle of class because my stuff's strewn everywhere. And I would get in trouble because my stuff strewn everywhere. Even though I was in Mr. Nef's class, even though I was in Mrs. Beat's class, even though I was wherever, you know, it

was always somehow my fault. So, why do I need the books knocked out of my hands, the push down the stairs every [ __ ] day? Excuse my language, but and then the the um what do you call it? The uh locker strewn everywhere. And I mean everything. My book bag was empty. All my pencils were everywhere. All papers were everywhere. Like everything. I had pictures of Hvel in my locker that were stepped on and water poured on and everything else. All because they wanted to cut my lock and strewn everything in. So, and every teacher was aware of all of that to be honest with you. >> I uh I definitely appreciate the public comment, everything like that. Um and voice and everything you just said. Um I'm going to cut off right now because we

do have to move along with stuff like that, but appreciate I understand sometimes things are crashing. >> So, thank you very much. No, >> you're welcome. Thank you. Are there any others for public comment? All right. Not moving on. Next agenda item is discussion. There's none. Which moves us to item eight on the agenda, which is the school board uh reorganization. Also wanted to remind the board and the public that this evening you did accept the resignation of Neil Tate um which represents the region two on the school

board. Um the same process will happen with Neil. Um, and we will hold those interviews for that board seat as well um January 13th at 7 o'clock um at the start of the board meeting.
