motion by Alis second by Josh allvor say I MO is this onot is this on theing okay just check know thank okay so first item on the agenda is is um kind of finishing up with our superintendent search and we have Gary CEST here from KB to help us kind of set our goals and our expectations so I well thank you very much I really appreciate the opportunity to be here as she mentioned this is the uh last formal part of the superintendent search we believe this to be very important we have an opportunity to identify some call them goals but some things that you want your new superintendent to really start U working on and then expectations of him what expect what expectations you have of your new superintendent and then the hard part
we're also going to give him an opportunity to say what are his expectations of the board this probably be the last time he ever has this opportunity so uh an important meeting tonight so are you ready for that Mr Murphy I'm ready let's do it okay so here we are tonight you're developing a new team so you've got six board members for I understand just six correct and new superintendent so you're developing a new governance team that's your board members and your superintendent then we're going to identify reflect on some goals and some expectations so we're going to go through this as if we're developing a new team talk about what good teams look like we're also going to talk about how things are done around here so he'll have an idea now's a great
time if you get things that you don't want to do the same way now's a great time so we'll talk about some scenarios tonight and how that might work so when we need to have some people participate today and obviously Mr Murphy we hope you'll participate in part of the discussion so what are some qualities of a great relationship think about that for a couple of seconds and I'm hoping some of you will start just throwing out some things qualities of a great relationship communication for sure communication absolutely that one always comes up so you did the easy one good job anybody else what some others that you guys thought of that's not communication trust trust absolutely and communication and Trust are definitely kind of tied in together aren't they I mean you could say
one comes first and you'd be right but somebody else may say it's the other one but you have to have communication develop trust and if you don't trust you're not going to believe what's being told to you so it's very good so there's more than two anything else that you can think of work together working together you bet you got common goals right so we're working together to define those goals and then work together so if it's just his goals not going to get done obviously all right so with that think about this if you've ever been on a great team and it does not have to be Athletics it could be but it could be that team could be this team could be a volunteer committee downtown whichever Community you live in could be
a place of work could be wherever have you ever been on a great team okay I'm I sure hope all of you can say I have at least at one time been part of a great team and I'd like you to think about what was it like and what made that team so good so great so now once again contemplate this question what were the attributes of that team that was so great so think about that a little bit and see then I'll ask for somebody to start throwing some things out what were some of the attributes of your great team that made it so great anybody want to volunteer one just going above and beyond put extra absolutely so some your team whatever team that was probably everybody on the team it wasn't just
you but everybody was willing to do more than was probably expected of them originally great you bet anybody else working towards a common goal together working towards a common goal well that's a great thing you know Athletics goal is to win either this game or the next one or whatever but as a board team it's to Student Learning Student Success we're working on a common goal anybody else like to share something they thought of about your great team I put down just knowing what your role is and excelling in that role absolutely you bet because I've played on some pretty good basketball teams I guess what my role was going to Fowler best player at the end of the quarter when I thought I should be the score but you can see how that can
be an issue when you don't know your role it's better than that I'm making that up to make a point so think about this the strength of the team is each individual member and the strength of each member is the team research says if you've ever been on a great team you spend the rest of your life trying to replicate that experience I mean if you look back at whatever great team you had in your mind when you were thinking about that wouldn't that be fun to be able to replicate that again wouldn't it be even better if it happened to be this team at some point and maybe it is maybe this was the team you were thinking about so these are the five items we're going to be going over these five items
these are relationship development so there's five items so think about some of the things that you said when we were talking about great relationships and great teams so that goes with personality communication role goal alignment and expectations these are the five things that have to be part of a great team so we're going to go through these some we're going to spend a little bit more time than others some we won't spend a whole lot of time on but you can see the common goals goal alignment and the expectations is really really important so with that I want you to think about the four stages of team development some of you may have seen this before it's a fairly recent research the last 20 years but four stages of team development start with forming so
you might think this is a team that's forming because you're getting a new board member at some point you'll probably have a seventh board member so you'll be bringing somebody else on that team number two is storming and these are natural even the best teams go through these stages so think about where you might be with this team CU I'm going to ask you and hopefully somebody'd be willing to share number three is norming that's kind of what we're doing tonight because you're probably going to have some storming but we'd sure like to minimize it by norming things this evening and then lastly performing so here's what those look like so Mr Murphy I can uh maybe talk to you I don't know about you but my first board meeting you don't have to admit
it in front of your board I've never admitted in front of the board I was really nervous there was a lot of anxiety but I was also kind of prideful that gol they chose me during this whole process so that's when you're at forming there's some excitement there's anticipation about the team there's optimism about where you might go there's some pride in being chosen not only as a board member but as a superintendent to be part of this team and then there's the attempted Harmony I guess you can call this the honeymoon period you know everybody's trying to get along when you're forming the first team so nobody's going to say anything to ruffle feathers storming is a little bit different this is when you start having competition within the team for your role how
come the war presidents are no one that gets to talk in this darn meeting you know just start those types of things I know that's not the case but you're going to get it you're going to get it competition within the team for power how come this one board member or this superintendent thinks they own all of the power within our team we're all equals ideas gosh I have good ideas too how come nobody seems to consider those as part of this team and influence within the team so when you're in the storming part differing opinions can result in Conflict how come Josh I has say should just keep his mouth shut dang it we have that did I choose the right person on you have no idea so norming is when now this is
what we're going to try to do a little bit tonight so when you get to that snoring stage you see you know remember when we talked about this this is the way we do things around here so norming is when you can start expressing criticism openly and that doesn't mean you're trying to tear down a team member but you know what I like that idea but have we ever thought about a little bit of a different part of that how that worked H let's hear it let's all talk about where everybody is really important as part of that you're accepting of new members so the only really new member is you ma'am I think you're probably the newest board member and then soon you'll have a number seven who will be the newest and you
got to do some of this all over again you're establishing your ground rules on how you do things around here and then your goals start to emerge so as I mentioned this is really what tonight is trying to Norm as much as we can and then lastly when you get to the Performing this is what it may look like everybody understands their strengths and weaknesses if there's an idea that has something to do with agriculture let's talk to Josh he's kind of you know we know if it's something in the medical field let's talk to Tamar he seems to know what's going on in that well everybody kind of knows their role you're satisfied with your progress I mean you're never completely satisfied but you're satisfied that you're making progress and the things that you're
wanting to do in your District you can see them they're starting to get there constructive self-change that's really hard in the middle of what you're doing he likes what we're doing but there may have to be some self change that this board is willing to make and change that and then lastly attachment to the team I've used this example over and over but I think some of you might uh identify did anybody have any younger brothers or sisters yeah and they were about three years younger than you my brother I didn't really hate him but when I was 12 I thought I hated him because he was always in my feet he ever wanted to go everywhere I did did and we were riding our bikes and my best friend started picking on my brother
and guess what I had to beat up my best friend I go home crying I hated my brother right but he was my teammate and I couldn't let that happen so you think about that we may not like each other at times but we are each other's teammate and we're all in this together so here's the big question in your opinion what stage do you think your team might be in one two three or four willing to there's no right or wrong answer it's not going to light anybody up in motion so it's just discussion where do you think you might be right now forming storming norming or performing who would like to share where you think your team might be and and try to justify it promise not to rule my eyes if you
say one I think my perception of where we're at is probably different than so are you willing to go further with that you know just being new to the district and understanding that I'm new one here yeah I I feel like we're at one but these guys probably don't feel that way because they've been together for a longer period that that makes sense to me because you kind of know how things are done around here good or bad you kind of know he he's trying to feel things out you know is this something I can do not do is this is this the sacred cow in this District or can I go push yeah can I go push the sacred cow over in this District so okay so he says forming anybody else want to
say another one that's or or maybe you can agree yeah I think we're forming or no I think we're here it's okay no wrong answer personally yeah yeah so you just came on January so I mean gosh just a six months still trying to figure things out you got caught right in the middle of a superintendent SE so you are kind of involved in that rather than some of the other also important items so when ma'am when you said for me did you say that and also Mr Murphy because some of these terms really made sense to you or is there another reason that you said for I think for me it's more learning how everything is going you bet yeah how how things work together yeah what role do I have as a board
member what role does he have we'll talk about that a little lat I'm putting words in your mouth but yeah anybody else you guys know you have other agenda items I can [Laughter] tell where did you guys think you were at before the new members came on before I got here January you put yourself so I think I think even with new people coming onto the team I feel like we're I don't feel like there's a power struggle or things like that I feel like people are fitting into their roles and stepping in so even like having you join I don't feel like it's become this constant conflict and power struggle between you and everybody else or between the two of us and so for me I feel like it's more in the norming where
new people are coming on and it doesn't just totally shut things down because to me if we were all in the forming having one new person step in would really to me in my mind that would really just grind everything to a Hal whereas even though you're new the ball is still rolling a lot of them and there's a lot of things going and as you've come on things have continued to progress and even though you feel like you're in the forming you're not saying whoa we can't do this because I'm not like you're you're still jumping in and getting up to speed instead of it just being like a total grinding hold thank you so I guess that's where I'm at yeah makes sense have you that that the team that you had that
was not great don't say what it was but you may have been on a team at some point that was not great it was the one you weren't thinking of youbody want to share not what the team was but where maybe did you spend a lot more time on storming than you wanted to and when you're storming you're not making a whole lot of progress storming is a natural phase but when you have your Norms you can get out of it if teammates are the good people we all assume everybody is that want to get out of it obviously all right so types of conflict there's three types of conflict so think about when something frustrates with you as part of a team whether it's this one or another one one of the types of
conflict is data either where you're getting you're not getting information well how am I supposed to make a great decision when there's no justification from the superintendent on why he's recommending what he's recommending so a lack of information can really uh cause that issue misinformation and remember we're we're we're seeing that a lot in the National and the state politics is that misinformation or what we assume is misinformation because we don't believe it that it's just unfortunately kind of the way we are as humans but then how we spend that data is the interpretation of it you know I may be giving you numbers and I think they're great and you don't we the other way around I don't think they're good but you do and then I'm giving you information but you're going to
me that information is not relevant to what we're trying to do so if you're in a conflict and it's data related that's probably the reason why another piece of conflict is because now we're we're all probably are we all from Kansas here we all grew up in Kansas did we all kind of grow up at least let's say the central region of Kansas you didn't he's going to be the weird one here you didn't either Southwest Southwest oh okay so you two are going to have some same no so we'll talk about this a lot of times values change because you have different ideology the way you grew up you know if you think about it if I stood by Mr Murphy and I said I grew up in inner city New York and he
grew up in southwest Kansas can you imagine how their ideology and I think I'm right but he thinks he's right but guess what you think he's right because probably more identify with what he's doing different criteria for evaluating ideas I think this number is a great way to evaluate it but you want to have more things that are more feely goody about it you know so when you have some conflict it could be data related or it could be values related and lastly the last type of conflict is relationship it's not lack of information it's miscommunication and one of the parties may feel it's on purpose you're lying to me there's strong emotions between teammates and then a superintendent or a board member in this case has got repeated negative behavior that's just turning the
team off so if you have conflict Within 18 it almost always is going to relate between data values and relationships one of those three so think about that non- great team that probably fell apart at one point or did not achieve what that team was supposed to achieve if you looked back on that I'm hoping somebody might share actually you know what I didn't know this information but man that one team I was on 12 years ago that failed it's because we had a relationship issue or we had a values issue or we had a data issue can anybody uh relate to that in any way or if you can are you willing to share Prett quiet area Mr I would say mine would be more relationships yeah you communication that bet communication just really
comes down to to me it seems to be the root of a lot of problems and a miscommunication absolutely and what's interesting is it kind of goes back to data is I'm giving you information I really think is true but in your mind that that that just information does not even relate to what we're trying to to do yeah so it kind of relates between back and forth between two of those for sure and a lot of times relationships can sour because we don't share the same Valu so you can see how those are all connected also mine would be relationships too probably I really think coming in and just having somebody having a negative perspective of me before they even knew absolutely rumors out there or whatever it may be or they made a
judgment based upon their first 10 minutes they met you which is not fair by any means so read that little quote when elephants fight it's the grass that suffers that's an East African proverb so in your mind fill in the blank on this sentence when the governance team fights it is or it's are the what that suffers but word would you put in there I hope you'd say students I'm going to say it for you I was a high school principal in a building for 13 years we had great superintendent leadership until one year that superintendent lasted nine months by February that superintendent was asked to leave in the middle of the year that's how bad it was it told me that great leadership affects a lot of different things because it was obvious that
I was not working as a principal in the manner of what I thought my job was is to benefit student learning make sure the teachers are comfortable so that kids can learn that our Focus went somewhere else so what I can say is when the governance team sneezes everybody catches a cold in the district and you wouldn't think a kid would know that something's going on with the administration they are the smartest people out there they can read it they can feel it and I think we all agree that student achievement Student Success what however you wish to say it is your number one goal here and when you're working together as a common team wow powerful powerful all right so personality here's kind of my fun part of this so during the interview and
let's hope it continues but at least during the interview your personality with Mr M Murphy uh meshed not only did you like your answers but you thought he's going to fit into our community all right so but there's four different personality types so we're going to have a little fun I'm not going to ask any of you in fact I don't want you to tell me what personality type you are but on your little sheet and it's bigger so you can read it I'd like you to circle the words with each and within each one of these squares that you think best describe you so Mr worth you're not doing this you're not circling worlds that you think the people assume you are this is what you're circling the words that you think best describe
you now we are hoping that one of those squares will have more circles than others you're likely to have a circle at least one words in each one of those squares but we're hoping one of those squares will have a few more circles than each other for for all right so let's talk about this and if you're not done please continue I know I'm probably going quicker than you would have choose me to but I want you to uh look at this if you would on the screen if you have more squares chosen on one of these top two your personality type might be a little bit more people focused if you're one of these two you might be more task focused your personality if you're one of these two on the left your personality
type might be a little bit more assertive and if you are on the right your personality Ty might be a little bit more Cooperative remember there is absolutely nothing wrong with any one of these personality types because the world wouldn't go around if we were all the exactly the same so let's get a little bit more DET detail if you had the most word circled in the upper left your personality type might be considered expressive now the board member don't tell me who you are I don't need to know and try not to look at the board member or the superintendent of which you think fits this try not to look at him he's good he's really good he's staring at the screen if you're the expressive type around the board that might look like
somebody that actually kind of enjoys meetings but you really like to express ideas you love to listen to other people's ideas you like to you like other people to be expressive even when they don't want to talk but you kind of like it that everybody that and you might be the one that is expressing if you are in the upper right your personality type might be the amiable the amiable is the one that just wants everybody to get along around the board table conflict really bothers the amiable type new board members that happen to be amiable Kayla don't say you're amiable if you're not don't even say if you are but new board members you can tell amiable types getting ready to make your uh first vote there's been a motion in a second and
you do this look okay everybody else raise their hand then I raise my hand because you don't want to be different when you're the amiable type if there seems to be conflict they're the first ones to say anybody want a cookie is it time for a break that sort of thing if you're in the bottom left your personality might be considered the driver my wife says there's some issues with drivers and I don't know what she's talking about drivers are pretty decisive they don't want to take a whole lot of time on the decisions in fact expressives bother them a little bit why are we talking this out so much when let's just vote on the darn thing pretty confident Risk Takers competitive leaders those aren't necessarily good A lot of them aren't but they're
not necessarily good if that's all you are as a driver and then last one if you're in the bottom right you're considered an analytical makes a lot of sense you all know what that means you're obviously your own time you're pretty concise when you're when you are the one that is going to express something you're going to get right to the point you need information I wish I would have known this when I superintendent I had a longtime board member that never had enough data to make a decision for the next meeting Mr secret I would like to have this this and this which is okay unless it's 20 hours and six other board members didn't need it you know that information but if I would have known that I would have been a lot
smarter I would have fed that board member the information they needed before they got there so they didn't have to ask for it very methodical there's a process to be used and very deliberate in their decision makings so kind of the rhetorical question is here even though these personality types might bother you a little bit because that one's so weird and I'm not that that kind of bothers me do can we admit that it's probably important to have all four personality types around the board meeting table what would the board meeting looked like now let's think about it all six of you were expressives and I'm sitting here just watching your board meeting I go home had the board meeting went oh my gosh all six of them or all seven of them were expressives
what did I observe what did it look like talking a lot of talking did uh decisions get made probably not or definitely not in the time the driver wanted them so there was a lot of discussion maybe a lot of discussion that some people said in the audience didn't seem that doesn't even relate to what they're talking to but that's the way those people have to get their thoughts together what if I was at the board meeting and I go home and I tell my wife oh my Lord all seven of them were amiable what' that meeting look like 70 votes not a whole lot a discussion maybe because if I discuss I might tell everybody I'm a little bit different and I don't want to be I don't want conflict here and then lastly
what if all seven of you were uh analytical what would that board meeting look like a lot of questions a lot of questions can we table that vote until next month when we get more information and I said all seven of you were that but what if you had a driver in mixed in there oh my Lord vote and get this going so but it's important and if you think about it around your table oh gosh now I know what he is or she is and why that but it gives you a better understanding of way you all have to work to come up with the ideas or the uh decisions that need to be made so well I don't know if you can see my screen there but there's a picture of a whole
bunch of camera lenses so in the old days days remember you had camera lenses so what I'd like to say about camera lenses is that we all see things differently through a different lens right Mr Murphy may say something but you see it through your lens because of your life's experiences you see it just a little bit different Josh you see it just a little bit different because of your experiences Brandon you see it just a little dton you see it just a little bit different because of your experiences so you need to be aware that just because I see it this way that doesn't mean anybody else on the team's going to see it exactly the same way they may be looking through a rosecolor glasses while you're not so it's really important for
you to be aware of that all right so now let's talk about um Communications so somebody mentioned that early about how important Communications is so does everybody in here like coffee if you don't like coffee Josh you don't like coffee do you guys like coffee over here can you fake it for me I'm not going to make you drink coffee tonight but can you fake it for me tonight so Allison when you have your coffee in the morning or whenever you have it how do you like your coffee with creamer with creamer D how do you like your coffee cre creamer just because I know he doesn't like coffee I'm going to ask him Josh how do you like it okay good for you how do you like your Cofe Tamara more like an actual
CA with yeah a lot of cream Tayla how do you like your coffee cream just cream chip black okay that's interesting oh now pay attention your new leader did you hire the right guy how do you like your coffee creamer more creamer than coffee okay any sugar no sugar I didn't hear any sugar around here all right all right so we all like coffee so the reason I'm in that is we all like communication right but we all like it a little bit different and guess what he doesn't know how you guys like it yet he's trying to figure out how six people like to be communicated with and he can't and you can't understand what everybody knows I like face to face he doesn't and then you also have to think about does he
have to completely change for all seven of you six of you in your case because you'll never get the message out if he has to do it all different ways but it's great to understand because you you don't know how he likes his communication either that's important so at some point Mr Murphy not in this District but a lot of first year superintendant I'll get a phone call from the board president this has not happened won't happen here first of all Mr Seekers we like our new superintendent but we're not getting the information we need to have oh guess what my first response is that oh have you told your new superintendent oh well I didn't think we had to communicate I thought it just came from him or her if you're not getting what
you want from them he doesn't know that unless you tell him and if it festers people start getting upset so communication has to go between both parties all right so building a govern's team so the strong ongoing communication kind of talked about respect to I diverse opinions based upon personality type but all districts have agreed upon operating procedures most of you know those you're still trying to learn them a little bit you have no idea how they've done things in central planes you've got six months of experience he has three weeks so we're going to talk a little bit about that so agreed upon processes are how you do things around here but it has a lot to do with communication so how do you communicate during meetings between meetings and as a needed basis
as you can assume I've been to a lot of board meetings so that information during meetings there are some boards that are extremely formal and it's usually the 5A 6A districts Madame President may I speak you know it's that way probably not that way here it's however you wish to do the business but there's an agreed upon process on how you communicate during meetings how you communicate between meetings um Mr Murphy are you communicating with the board as a whole at some point between board meetings how how do you do that usually every Friday we'll send out board Pro just Friday note whatever going on some of them are a little longer than others that's way it's going to be yeah especially when you're new you want to make sure there's no secrets there's no
anything that you can assume that they know so you're giving them everything that you need to give them so that would be between meetings as needed B B so individual board members request versus whole board so I think some of this boards heard me say this before that there should be no board member or superintendent that carries the secret if one board member knows it all of you need to know it so if you would happen to send an email and say hey I have a question about this everybody should get that response you may not say board member number one asked this I mean it could but you may not hey I had a question from a board member this was my response because guess what you may have had that same question or
I'm going to use use the bad example this time I hope I'm not putting my fo in my mouth they're all laughing over here can I go to somebody else there's the reason they don't let chance well let's say you got the response and you the only one and you're thinking I'm the only one that knows the answer ha guess how that looks with the rest of the team if that's the attitude you might display so when one board member carries the secret it it cultivates power within the board and you should all be equals now the board president may get it sooner May hold the secret a little bit longer just because sometimes that's the way it has to work but ultimately the Board needs to know it either through a Friday Note phone
calls or at a board meeting depending on the timing on that so how do you handle complaints and concerns I've never been a board member and the thing I would hate most is getting phone calls about I didn't like it as a principal or a superintendent but I can imagine because you really can't do anything about it how do you respond to somebody that complains to you so we'll talk about that in a little bit so think about ASAP and in case you don't not sure as soon as possible so as an individual board member if you told me I wanted something and you said I need that or you asked something and you said I need it as soon as possible what is your definition as as soon as possible what do you mean
when you tell me ASAP I need that Gary ASAP what's your def if it's for a meeting tonight or just give me any type of response you feel necessary like 24 to 48 hours usually okay how about what would be your definition of hourin an hour what's your definition I'm going other one as soon as possible but what's that but what if you asked that information and he gets to you a week and you're okay so that's it now all three of you have different explanations of ASAP right so can you see how that can be not only problematic for the superintendent but because everybody's definition of what you want or need is a little bit different than what your true definition is so let's talk about some past prog processes so these are things
you might want to be aware of I have some things that I think absolutely should be the way it's done there's some others that we can talk about if you disagree so in this District when Mr Murphy chooses to close school due to weather should he contact the board members before that decision's made really not a right or wrong on this but I like getting a text before the decision's made or when the decision you just tell us tell us that's part of the question so you said you like to have a text when he like before he's thinking about it before he sends it out to the parents and teachers you'd like to know 20 seconds before by text okay I would like to have it before just because of our district size yeah
okay we might not have an issue where we're at compared to where the school yeah because you're you're really big your district is really spread out so in your previous superintendent how did it happen maybe he never had to let school out I'm not sure Bill he called me well I think he knew I was out and about anyway yeah so made I was covering some roads so you were almost being used kind of as a transportation director to look like in your area of the district but then a group text went outou thinking about this because it could be snowing in Wilson and dry as whatever here yeah so the way it's been done before seems to be acceptable he makes a decision he may make some calls to get some good information makes
his call and then before he lets the teachers and whoever know you guys get a text is that the text is appro make sense does okay all right the superintendent should contact board members when authorities are called to a school to arrest a student some of them seem obvious some of them may not be depends on the size of the district right goes back to as as possible I mean because a lot going on he might be in the middle of alligators and snakes I would say I don't know if I was a good superintendent or not but I had a situation when I was on out the door I would say board clerk would you send a text to the board saying we've got a situation Mr secis will let you know what it
is as soon as he can but right now is he's trying to get to it but then you got to remember you can't forget 24 hours oh my gosh I didn't tell the board because guess what they're gone to the grocery store and they just heard about it right or wrong so if they know what the real story is they when somebody go no let me tell you exactly what happened it was a DARE officer there was not a you know whatever it is the police were there is a just as to be an assembly or whatever it is you know in Witchita I knew the superintendent in wiah the one right before wonderful lady U 75 school buildings how many high schools 8000 she probably didn't give a hoot about a student being arrested
at least at that point she might want to been filled in later but they had people that handled that stuff for her so but in your District I definitely can see how news traveled so fast and it may not be accurate so you feel like you kind of got how things have worked in the past or at least how they want the superintendent should contact board members when a teacher files a formal grievance citing a violation of the negotiated agreement so a teacher has filed agreements about something the district is not complying with whatever they should be so the teacher probably feels they can grieve this issue I'm assuming you want to know it about it but when would you want to know about it could it wait till the Friday note could it wait
till the board meeting Friday not and it probably maybe makes a difference on what the grievance is to a certain extent yeah if I'm not getting my total time of planning period is simply we've got it taken care of we did it internally we didn't have to go through the process it gets done but just in case we let you know what happened okay feel comfortable with that this one is different we may have some difference of opinions here and I'm kind of already telling you the board members should contact the soup when they have a question for a building principal or District staff person everybody's afraid to answer the way I said so I'll just start the best everything should be filtered through the superintendent to the best of your abilities now if you're
a parent and you need to go talk to the principal or the teacher you have that right that privilege you never lose your parental rights but if Dalton goes in to say Mr or Mrs Principal what why did why did that student get that discipline as board member that's really scary what you don't re because you just think yourselves as normal people but I will tell you when you walk into the building they all see a neon hat flashing board member board member and everybody is going did you see Chad Rogers is in the building they want and talk to principal I wonder what the heck that was and it could simply be hey can you confirm what time the ball came is in Smith Center tomorrow night it and whether it's really valid to
go in people are always thinking the worst because they had a board member so but if it's a question about I heard there was a really dicey discipline in I'm getting all kinds of phone calls I would really go through he can answer followed the policy perfectly unfortunately it didn't benefit to that child or that parent but followed the policy as written that you've all approved at the May board meeting small districts this is harder because you went to school with them you go to church with them um whatever but you really have to be aware and even if they like you your friends it's awkward I'm here to talk to you about my child and I'm here as a parent yes you have that right but you know what the teacher's going you're right
it's awkward it's awkward all right board members should contact the superintendent in advance when they have a have a question about on agenda and none of these are 100% pure but in most cases what would you think when do you get your agendas by the way you probably don't know yet but Monday Night board meeting when do you get the agendas you get them soon as you walk in that night Thursday or Friday before so if you're looking at the agenda and you have a question about something should you wait till Monday night and surprise the super superintendent or try to call him advance I would try to call him now there's always something that comes up where you have to ask depends questions to yeah yeah it is but um I've had a a
a superintendent say when a board member asks me why we spend $8 at Ace Hardware I can't tell them they don't know now if they call me on Friday I can do a little research and get that information to them you know so uh and then if you ask that now that question is not really off the wall but guess what the people listening or watching that superintendent knows nothing I bet our finances are in a shambles because they don't understand the way things work you know so it's best practice but it's never 100% the way it be because maybe you didn't honestly you were so busy in the middle of a family crisis you didn't get to see the agenda until 30 minutes before the 14 just it's the way it works but it's
good practice okay should board members contact the sup when you get a call from a constituent and or as our attorneys would say I'm sure you'll say it depends on what the phone call is if they're complaining about the superintendent have to decide is that something we need to address with the superintendent or a lot but what what would be maybe your response to that won former teacher here so it it does depend obviously but if you've got a board member if you got a phone call about a parent obviously you can't excuse me a teacher I hate this English teacher or I hate the third grade teacher or whatever it is you know what they did today you're going to listen and I would like to think you would call the superintendent you wouldn't
call the principal because once again now he's in the dark because he doesn't know about that teacher report you let him know he can make sure the principal is aware and maybe he can get back to you oh by the way here's what really happened after talking to three people that know exactly what happened and we've attempted to address that situation so that's best practice once again so most of you have seen this I put this together probably 10 years ago for a 2A District so I like to call it the lines of communication as opposed to the chain of command because if you said are you following the chain of command I'm not in law enforcement I've never been in military I'll talk to whoever I want in this District I'm a taxpayer can
you I mean you can hear it can't you probably heard it but if you had this and you talked about this as the board and you get that phone call you're going to listen you're going to have empathy you're probably never going to say I'm going to take care of that for you because of one board memb is like a patron you have no Authority but if you can say let's say it's about the football coach I always use that one as an example that oh gosh thank you for that information have you talked to the football coach no well you know in our district we have the lines of communication and we absolutely believe that problems can be best solved at the level of which it occurred that kind of takes it off you
know now I if I was the board member on as a superintendent I think you would appreciate that you'd get off the phone and said I think I did it right I didn't promise I talked to Mrs Smith they're upset with the football coach but I thought I'd let you know this is going to sound selfish I called the principal or so they can talk to the ad take care of this so I don't have to that sounds selfish but it is I don't want it to be my problem needs to be taken care at the level it can be it's not my problem until it's went across look where the board members are on this line of communication the board all the way the far right this may not work for Central planes you
may not have some of those you may have more that may be a little bit different from level one to level five but it's pretty accurate I would imagine so board members should you contact the superintendent when a rumor pops up on social media that references the district thank goodness you don't have that issue here from what I understand you know I would say it probably be good because obviously Mr Murphy's not tied in quite yet to the community and uh probably be nice for him to know man on the Facebook page is going crazy about the football coach just thought you might want to be aware of that so as a board do you have an agreed upon process on how you establish the monthly agenda so how is the agenda put together before
it gets to you for the board meeting anybody want to answer to that Mr Murphy's only gone through one official regular meeting so may or may not be the way it's normally done well the at the end of the meeting we can talk about items that will be on the next month's agenda and then Mr Murphy also kind of reference the previous year's agenda and then usually on Tuesday usually because that's my day off usually um I'll go in and talk great practice good good practice so um whether the other board members want to hear this or not but the board president has is the gatekeeper to the agenda they may put it together with suggestions from the board but if you called and said I want to have something on the agenda if you
called Diane or or Bobby I would like to thank if you talked to Mrs Dodie yet about that or I'm going to call Mrs Dodie to make sure it's all right or I'll put it on but we meet Tuesday so we can't promise now so she really has that's why she gets extra pay to say yes or no to agenda items now if she would say no I'd sure like to think she would talk to you hey the reason I said No Agenda is so full I think we can do it next month there should be I would think a rationale just you're not saying no just because you want to get under her skin there's usually a bell reason especially a new Bo member is that's something we've been talking about for seven months
we've had 28 executives sessions and it's it's solved it's settled we just don't want to talk about anymore may not be to your pleasing as a new board member but they've dealt with it they're done with it so we've talked about your process so it's kind of put together by probably these two or she does all the hard work and then he looks at it makes some suggestions and then your board president finalizes it on Tuesday or at least looks at it and then it's sent out either Thursday or Friday perfect electronically I assume okay all right so as a board do you have an agreed upon process for staying informed about the core work occurring in the district and the core work I would like to think would be student achievement Student Success student
learning do you have a process of which you're staying informed about the important stuff that's going on the core work because if you don't and you want that to occur now's a great time to say we want to hear more about the core work of our district maybe you don't but maybe you do now's a great time to tell him either you are or you are not getting that information Clark always attached something at the end of Friday notes I think didn't they what's going on in District with the kids and stuff a little bit but I feel like our principal reports a lot of times that and dalon are the principles at the board meetings to verly give their report okay yeah good so on the Student Success not just what's happening on the
dayto day right is that what you're talking about could be yeah it could be students too you're principles do a great job it could be teachers coming in could be kids yeah could be whatever the principles want I don't know they get directions Mr Murphy on what you wanted to talk about I don't think you necessarily always want to hear that reminder we got a football game Friday night you can look at the calendar to see that what you're W to know is what's going on in the classrooms yeah okay we've already talked about no secret so basically that's it but uh you know hopefully that there would be a process where there are no secrets everybody gets the same information so in your little District USD 112 I if you read that statement there
you would all identify with that yeah my wife would come home from the grocery store everybody knows more about what's going on than I do no they don't they think they know more about what's going on but no they don't so but it is embarrassing if somebody goes hey why was that police car at the building today and you don't know that is embarrassing so that's why communication is so important all right so role we're going to do this quickly here's a little statement the board's job is not to run the district it's to make sure the district is well run so that kind of goes to you know if you go into the building everybody thinks you're all of a sudden turned into the superintendent what as a board as a whole your job
is to make sure he's doing his job basically and that you're making sure your goals is being driven by the people that need to be driving the goals so they need to be monitored Mr mury so we're going to have some short-term goals tonight nothing long term basically is here are the things you really want him to concentrate his efforts on and needs to be some monitoring at the board meeting here's what we're doing here's what that's going to look like measurable if we can depending on what it is some of these might not be you know when you say we want to increase everybody enjoyment of being a staff member here how do you measure that I don't know but there's things you can still talk about so there is state law that says
Mr Murphy shall have charge and control of the public schools of the school district subject to the orders rules and regulations of the board of education so he's the CEO so he's doing the day-to-day stuff but you're subject to the board policies your District policies and board orders I guess for lack of better term not board member orders but board as a whole so let's talk about this the role of the board the role of the board the six of you is to govern the school district you're like the legislature of the state you're the legislature of the school district you answer the questions what and why you decide by voting at a convened meeting not at the grocery store I always say convened meeting no decisions can be made except at a convened meeting
one voice if I was talking about seven board members one voice means if it was a 4-3 vote it's still giving him the direction to do something and if I the three of us were the bad the three votes negative it's still one voice it's not the way I voted but my team did remember we talked about team early and I'm on my team and that's the direction we're going that's one voice even though it's 4-3 or 70 committed to it once the decision was made and you need to identify the intended result when you're voting 43 to buy that bus the intended result was within the motion this is very simplified gives him direction to buy the bus so the board work is remember the ends so think about you guys are the end
game when something occurs what will it look like when it's done the superintendent's work is this he leads and manages the school district he answers the questions how and when he recommends and implements and then lastly he leads the staff through improved performance through following District policies his work is is the means remember yours is the ends his is the means his is the means his work is the means to your end we want to buy a bus now it's his job to get it bought very simplified we want to have improved reading scores in third grade that's the end result it's going to have improved now he has to figure out how to get to your want so you've all seen the governance clock you won't be able to see it without doing it
but remember the governance clock everything above that is the board authority authority everything below is a superintendance Authority so be aware of that I think most of you have all seen that some of you have been to the new board member workshops over the course of the years so these were always up there but what I want to say about the role of the board is the what versus the how the ins versus the means is that you both have to share the why so when something is getting done the eight of you the seven in this case have to agree on the why so one of your let's say one of the big things that you want him to prioritize in the next 18 months is to improve reading scor all right now the
public knows that you go to the grocery store when use a bad example again I'm noticing a pattern well I just heard the board just approve the reading they want to improve reading scores what what's that all about sounds sounds pretty good and if you say something it looks good in to PE if we have a goal like that I'm sure we can't do it not very good right they see you in the grocery store two days later hav already talked to board member kind of have an idea why you know what improve reading scores our kids have a better chance for Success outside of high school when they're fre guess what that Pat what the heck's wrong with our board they don't share the why right so your words have to be pretty similar
on what you're trying to achieve or your public going get in between it for sure if they have that opportunity all right so goal alignment so I had the next slide was actually your mission statement and I want to read it to you because I want you to uh rhetorically answer a question Unified School District 112 in partnership with Home and Community is dedicated to motivate Challenge and educate students to become responsible productive citizens in a diverse Global Society the district will provide educational experiences in a nurturing student friendly environment which will Empower each individual to achieve his or her greatest potential here's a scary question that you cannot answer because you can't answer it even if you wanted to how do you know you're doing that that's your mission statement how do you know
that's kind of scary to him as a new superintendent how do you know that USD 112 is doing what you say you would do in your mission statement and if you could answer that question where are you doing it at are you just doing it in third grade or are you doing it prek 12 all right so we're going to put in some couple little groups a group of three can you Chad I just saw you roll your eyes was it him that you don't want to work with yeah I did he did not you guys can work in a group i' appreciate it and the three of [Music] you now I know it was a plan to separate us all right so within your group Step One is changes write down two or three
changes you feel your District needs to make in the next couple of years so if this group comes up with two or three changes you're going to write one per sticky note so you might hand me three sticky notes you may hand me two now try to look I'm going to try to explain this try to look big picture this is not where you would write this is our opportunity the change we need to get rid of is get rid of that football coach we're not we're not looking for that what are two or three changes that you believe need to occur within the next couple of years let's say 18 months so this these could be things that he needs to concentrate his effort so you guys give give you time to come up
with that and when it looks like you have them we'll uh we'll report out got of course we know where it is mess it up cheater cheater [Music] your system looksy your two or three this group already has your two or three wow we you're the tech dude give us thank you okay all right all right so let's report out so with this group here report to your your colleagues what were the two or three changes that you've written down we including college technical classes into theol Elementary capacity issue okay and then prior priori imple okay any questions from let's include Mr Murphy in this any questions I'll write all this down Mr Murphy and you will have this in a document a work document I mean feel free to keep it but I'll have
it for you all right so the other group what would be the two or three you would like to report out um increasing High School class schedule opportunties so is that similar to what we heard or similar not exactly but similar okay all right and decreasing G okay excellent excellent so now the same thing but now threats so some of these can be the same so if you want to replic it might give you some ideas later when you're deciding what your priority items are so threats list one or two one or two critical threats that you see coming within the next 12 to 18 months what are threats to this community this District that you see coming or maybe see coming within the next 12 to 18 months because so you know so it
kind of a learning process for parents up they might that wanted to do or like she I think she felt like she had to do it I don't know she's going to do a great job like she just need it's good you comfort zone for a while and then you got to kind of step out of that so now that's your board president board M right is not did he get off because of that I think so that was Prior you're right one to two critical threats I everything that's that's awes I have two tamber is that your last one yes I didn't know if that was number one or number two you said one or two I [Laughter] did we'll give you time you want to come up two are you sure well let's
get let you go first then because I'm feeling a little sorry for you what what is a Potential Threat that you changes in funding okay absolutely it will absolutely what are one or two that you thought of we also put State funding and then attracting and retaining quality staff not getting to be an issue all right so while we're doing this now challenges and changes threat could be very similar but if you would now do the same progress with uh one or two challenges that you see coming in the next 12 to 18 months if you get started right now you might get to well we did then it went to the next one so I yeah we didn't like to put it up on that thread got one already there you go Gary already
got it they're ahead of oh you already got one you want a number two Jeopardy [Laughter] this grp already has two wow you lost one all right let's report out so if this group would like to report theirs looks like they got three in case you didn't come up with two we we'll have you one I'm kind of back the last ones teacher shortages okay declining enrollment and then on with that the Open Enrollment the capping of the class sizes we're just talking about how that's a learning curve for everybody so you're one or two um space at elementary school in okay and then State excellent okay excellent good and while she's finishing that one the last one simply is list one District challenge could be the same could be different that may hinder the
transition of your new team to achieve your District goals know that all right let's start with this group here I just wrote we didn't discuss thank you for being a really good group over here I really appreciate we could the division between the communities yeah absolutely that's the same thing a lack of common goals yeah it could be good yeah all right thank you appreciate all right so now the the thing we're now going to do these won't be goals when we leave tonight they're going to be common themes and then you're going to say we like those and then you're going to leave it to him to figure out how to get it done and of course he's going to talk to you here's how I think we ought to get it done what
do you guys think about that so the last thing I'd like you to consider doing remember I said consider is I'd like you to as a group your three groups identify three or four of the most important themes from this work here and possibly some items that we talked about earlier so if you want to come up and look at this but then your group's going to come up with common themes and a common theme I'm going to make one up that might be just because I heard it common theme might be um more student opportunities then he's got to Define that for you what student opportunities mean you guys have conversations around the board board table you say we love that get started on that so if you would please three to four of
the most common themes that you groups believe you heard feel free to mosy around so once again one per sticky note blame Bobby Joe peanut butter no they're peanut peanut my wife huh blame my wife yeah cuz she bought [Music] the it feels a lot longer than the comme that never ended morphed into yeah but it's three years you guys yeah well you see your brother much it's been over a year ksb board of directors I'm listening I'm doing great well we just HED yeah so we just HED yeah be a challeng nobody understands the work of a clerk ter well it's if you're a clerk for wi that's all you do is here you do everything you have to do it all do it all master all of it we're small if we were
like great Ben has a clerk that just goes to readings and they have a bus manager and they have a payroll Clerk and they have you know what I mean I do yeah it's different when it's a small school guys got your no three or four you three or four we got four Josh you're gonna have to speak up there's no quota police if you say we're done we're done so don't canot carry the we good job you Goos I keep pushing over here graduated all right if this group would share their three looks like you've got three and then um I know you're going to listen but if you think you have something similar I I'll kind of want to hear from you that I think this is pretty close to what they have
we the staff Recruitment and retaining retaining probably being a big one on that one the Hollywood capacity issues and then the increase student opportunities or Tes yep pretty similar y so do you think you have anything different or do you we can would you read them please no pretty pretty close the the only thing we did we would like to like narrow that more class opportunity down to actually like atun senior high school so Bob did you hear what their definition of class opportunity is basically what I'm saying different than what yours would be you think I mean we said tech classes but I I mean I'd almost like to see it in elementary too you know just Hands-On learning more opportunities for them as well I wouldn't just she wasn't specific to Tech it
was in general it could be Tech it could be te but it's just even like CL scheduling and so more piing up J senior high school because that's scheduling's been kind of an issue the so like even like talked about at the last meeting meeting too like so you feel like you at least kind of have a pretty good notion of I feel like we're on the same page with that the direction we're going and then you know that might be something we want to come back to with some of the elementary and maybe talk more about align separate these just for now since I mean either they're similar they're a little bit different yeah we were like adding more opportunities rather than just the schedule all right so what I'd like for each of
you to do is you all have to stand up and move over here you notice I'm giving three dots we've only got five potential common themes so with your three dots if you would um so D if you like increased student opportunities you're going to put a dot next to that one if you like more class opportunities you're going to put that one and if you really want to work on funding and financials your three dots would be there well then we'll see the distribution of dots and see if any of these un out so it'll take the time you need but eventually get your dots up there and three all three dots yeah so each of you get to do this individually this is not a team exercise so don't worry me so much
he gave me nine dots you never mind you still have tape right there on the corner sir thank you see this is where to me those go hand even though one of those may or may not get the dots I think he's going to have to consider those when he's op they're similar there's got to be some connectivity between those two even though we one the two we were talking dot on you can put your dots I I it's more simar to me face head out Colorado yeah okay so let's go the most tallies seven of them were space issues at Central Plains holwood capacity so basically capacity issues in more than one building uh with four was staff recruit and retaining with three was more class opportunities with two with students so if you
put those together they end up being number two but if they're separate you know so that I think that's worth a board conversation at some point Mr Murphy I would think you want to make sure you make sure you know what they want out of that and then with two was funding and and financials all right so the last not a big thing here that I would like for you now is expectations in your groups three to five 3 to five one expectations you have of the superintendent now what's an expectation an expectation is something you expect him to do during his whole tenure here not just for a year because he's trying to impress everybody so for an example I'm going to make say a couple that you would think of even if I
didn't say it doesn't mean you think they're important but you want him to be a great communicator districtwide not with the board patrons staff you want him to be visible within our community those are expectations that doesn't mean you want him to be visible this year throughout his total tenure you don't have to write those but those usually come up naturally but if you could come up with three to five expectations of your superintendent Mr Murphy this is hard on you but if you could write down three to five expectations you have of the board snacks is an accept answer snack so get the job done espe especially oh District communities BL sh rest 40 B hour believe really de yours got three wow they got three already can I don't have to WR okay
this we feel good they got their four possibly five so they have 10 what all right so let's start with this side and obviously you want to listen to see if you have any questions on what this is and there may need to be more conversations to Define what Communications is on what does that mean to the board all right so you start us oh how convenient for you okay um start from the bottom up uh knowledgeable of the county commissions within the district just kind of what's going on with each of those because we do have more than one um so that we don't miss out on opportunities at those levels and them inform formed of legislation and associations relating to the superintendent role and give engaging when necessary when things are being aware
of that ksb USA okay um visible in each of the communities within the district visible and engaged um and then engaging with students you know knowing their names they know who you are and not just when it's for the bad news so that it's not a scary thing when you show up so Mr Murphy do you have any sure May responses to that I don't and this was like I like he said over the tenure not just like tomorrow yeah well you wanted to be good at this 5 years from now not just this year these are your expectations okay so this group here would share what you have 's see we said transparent communication districtwide so let me stop you right there I love what you said can anybody Define because he's going to
probably want to know what that one means are you ready you want to you think you have a definition of transparency and communication districtwide I think you know if you're going to have notice and not just to one specific and if it's something that can be said it needs to be said I we know there's certain things that can't be shared but okay very good thank you um the second one we had was um involved and engaged in the district communi all of them similar yeah as St informed on legislation changes topics that kind of matches similarly to what you have maintain a collaborative relationship with all staff within the district goes with visible and being engaged and then this one is use the district resources effectively while taking Financial taking Financial you say that
one again I only got use District resources effectively while making it should be taking or while well taking in financial taking in financial considerations yeah we have the to do something instead of Hing all right so Mr Murphy it's kind of hard this is the only time you get to tell to request of the board uh your expectations of the board so I I I gave him a little heads up earlier today because otherwise he would just that's not fair I didn't know you were going to struggle so mightily on so Mr Murphy if you'd share with the board what you've written down if there are not expectations up there that I have a question about can I ask those now absolutely so one question that I have is like hours of the day and
I I've talked with with um our secretaries a little bit about what hours they work and things like that what are your expectations of hours of the day like just giving you an example A lot of times between 6 and 7 o'clock I'm here in the morning I'll usually run home for lunch and then I'm usually here till 4:00 unless we have meetings at night or we're traveling like site counsil certain things like that so that's something that the other two districts that I've been at has kind of been different so I just wanted what what are your guys's expectations hourly and and understand you know when the school year starts there's activities and things that we'll be at for that side of it but um thoughts ideas what are your expectations as far as
that cut everybody assum that you would keep the office out like you know the ag4 okay and if there's other you know special what I assum I share some of that but I also recognize your hour from 600 to 7 in the morning might be your most productive hour to Mark things off of your list so when you come in and catch that extra time I don't think it's necessary to overload yourself because I think it's important to find balance so that you don't burn out because once school starts those evening activities are GNA eat up a lot of your time because you're gonna want to be present for some of those too so I say for whatever expected need to be done you know uh like she said your best time is probably first
thing in the morning uh doesn't mean that you got to be here till 4 uh if you can get what needs to be done at that day by 2:00 and then we come back to that circumstance uh community and involvement right okay any other comments agree completely with that good so I think I heard is that you need to be available but when you get the work done because you may have been somewhere at 12:00 one night and you're come in at 6 and we'll wear a person out pretty quick yeah thank you good question no that was that was um expectations on my side is just open communication like especially right now don't please don't just assume that I know something I'd rather you tell me a couple times just to make sure okay
I got it um because you know just coming into the new community you guys have been here and have deeps here and um I don't want to tip the bucket over on something that's really important to the district so just um the communication side of that and then we've talked about the surprise part of it trying to keep it surprises down to a minimum for everybody I'm kind of re know alleviate some of that conflict as well and if there are questions or anything like that please reach out whether it's you know an email or a phone call or stopping in so um that was my big one was the communication side and the other one um just respectfully confidentiality on any person personal issues that arise um and you know just move to a
place you don't know all the ins and outs for everybody but um the confidentiality side of that with personal issues is just really important as well those are the the only two expectations that I have so I'm going to ask the board if they have any questions or they feel comfortable with those expectations I know board members change over the course of time but this group of six feel comfortable with those I guess I have one clarification question so when we're reaching out to you what is your preferred method for us to reach out that you're like I don't want you to think just because there's a phone call that every phone call is a 911 right so what what's your preferred email text email text or phone call I don't really have either one
you know back to the ASAP thing that he said just the personality item if you say something needs to be done ASAP for me that means two minutes ago so like I just just want to make sure that I'm clear on that side of it but whether it's a call a text or an email either one of those I'm fine with any other questions clarifications for Mr M I think I me like just go back P it's to clarify the hours and stuff just that's kind of how our mindset is too at work and stuff kind of it's like you're there to get the work done that kind of you know waxes and wngs sometimes you got to be late sometimes you coming early so but the communication so if you leave early someday or
aren't going to be in there in the afternoon because you work late you know some even you might just send out a message that you're not be there that afternoon and for sure your office sta knowing so that they don't set unrealistic expectations of oh yeah he'll be back in a few minutes and then you have somebody upset because they didn't hear back from you until the next day or something so just trying to set everybody up for success and set you up for Success so you don't St your toe and we don't ever want to say well I don't know where he yeah I haven't seen him all day sometimes I feel like I'm bugging them because every time I run up to whether it's to Wilson for something or over to Hollywood I'm
saying hey I'll be back at this time I'm running over there and I feel like sometimes that's okay because the phone will ring five minutes later and I go God I forgot what he said so so what I'm hearing you say is as long as I'm getting my work done if it's something where I'm done at two because we have an activity that night at 6:30 or a great opportunity to go around the Comm okay okay thank you boor really appreciate that so just for you aware a new superintendent even though he's an experienced educator needs to be evaluated twice this year the first three years of his tenure they have the evaluations have to be completed by the 60th day of the semester so that's usually third or fourth week of October and about
spring break in March if you go from this and it's just the days of school you don't have to count Saturdays Sund so the first day of school whenever that is is when you can start your account if you wait till the October meeting you're probably not going to get it done you know so you want to start thinking about that in advance if you like your evaluation instrument continue to use it fantastic make sure he knows what he's being evaluated on so that he can be aware uh good superintendent of which he will be want to know how they're doing evaluation should not be something something that you're doing to him it should be together when you finally sat down with him to review his summative evaluation there really shouldn't be any surprises if
you say we're not communicating well enough he should have known that before that particular day so what I would suggest all of this information the goals that you have or at least the common themes are not in goal form what I would suggest he starts working on that to figure out how you wish those so he'll come to you you you're told him what he's get to figure out how you know his expectations I'm going to send all of this stuff everything that was produced tonight in a document and but I'm going to make it into an evaluation form with a rubric the first evaluation because it's happening really quick and whatever evaluation instrument you're currently using even if it's really good may not be real applicable for somebody that's just get started cuz they
had haven't had a chance to do whatever is written down on there so I would give you this for consideration that the first evaluation you might use this document which is going to base on his expectations and lead in your goals because those are the things right now that he knows that you want to get done and then if you don't like your evaluation instrument and you like to see a new one U kasb with a whole B of bunch of board members and USA and the superintendent organization two years ago got together and built an evaluation instrument that all the parties agreed was darn better than anybody's what they're using it's being piloted by 28 districts last year is that what was presented at KB you would have heard about that then so if
you ever want to look at that just and I can send you the document you guys it's free so that but anyway first evaluation I will have it written up you don't have to use it but it's there if you don't I way there's some Doc so thank you I had a great time appreciate the time good luck guys got a great start lucky to have him he's lucky to have you guys so see youd June 30 25 after 43 years I'm I like what I'm doing tired driving ready for a break my wife's not going to like okay thank you you help good to see you thank you very thank you did you get that piece of paper off there did I got to do my case he asked me to write it down
so it with you g to give him a break Mr Murphy no I think they want to get out of here I all right so item number four is the central PL High School Junior High School exterior so the booster club um approached us about repainting some of the outside area of the high school and middle school um they're wanting to go back with school colors to kind of upgrade the door entrances the three door entrances to the high school middle school they also talked about replacing the three panels that are above those doors that have that are not glass um they got an estimate back on that it was pretty high from what I hear so um their thought was to hire a painter to paint the outside of their's were ways um kind
of to give it a facelift and an upgrade um and then maybe look at it at some sometime in the future replacing those windows and the hope is if they can get those windows replaced they can look at some little cool skin designs or something put on the outside of those doors to kind of spruce them up at some point so like some turquoise tiles on the roof is it at the high school that turquoise color you dark green or something with all that so so the painter when he came in he looked at that he just don't he's not going to have time to do all that that was something they wanted him to do and he thought he could get the doorway entrances done and then maybe next time we could talk about
the mint green e and then maybe doing school colors on the outside of the gym so um the paint quote I think they got a quote for the paint that was around $1,800 and then the window quote um I think they' be replacing 9 windows but it was like $5,600 so I don't know if that's going to be something that's going to get done um with with the amount of funds that they have so they asked about that and I think they um the painter could get to that before the first of the year so we wanted to uh put that on the agenda and get your guys's opinion that's to the booster club would pay for yeah that's great like I said I don't think I don't think the windows are going to get
done I don't think that's going to be part of it but I think the paint paint side of it they're really interested how soon would the be able to get on I don't know the answer to that he's pretty booked right now but he gave us just the the uh Insight that he would have it done before school started I think good was his hope to approve the booster club proceeding with the painting of the exterior second motion by Kayla and a second by Alison any further questions or discussion hearing none all those in favor say I any oppos same sign motion passes 6 and football field track and fence uh okay so this is a big one the booster club also expressed some interest in helping with fun the football field fence you know
they're just getting up and rolling right now so they don't have any of their funds are limited but are interested in partnering with the district um there are multiple ways to look at this it could be something where the district incurs the cost of the fence and then if we decide um that we want to go hals with the fencing project or we decided you know we wanted to go a different way with um the percentage of who would fund the fencing area around the football field and around the track um that could be a discussion that we have as well um we can discuss that um maybe the school pay half and accept donations from the booster club throughout this year to pay the other half um if we did that though the district
would incur the cost of the hole at the beginning of the project in our board notes there are um three bids in there that we did receive for your guys's viewing pleasure is this something that has been budgeted for this year it's something that has been talked about a lot and we've looked at kind of our capital outlay and we feel like it's something we could encumber just because we're going to have to at some point um and if the booster club would be willing to pay back half throughout the year and donations it's going to cut that number in half if if that's what you know the board decides to do um they won't put up half at a front they don't have half right now they have some activities planned and some membership
drives going throughout this year um this is going to go all the way around the football field minus what they have done a few years ago this is going to go from the corner of the school where the pillar is on the that corner all the way down the side over to approximately where the shot putut rings are and then go all the way back over to the tree room it's going to have a couple um I think they budgeted three gates in there and then another walkthrough gate and another entrance put the practice field outside the fence the practice field would be outside the fence yes sir and the diagram that we have there down there so you know it kind of develops two separate areas to funnel people in to be able to
take tickets and that sort of sort of thing and then on the other end by the corner of the school a big walkthrough gate to get through on that side as well um is it something that you know is going to cost us football games or anything like that I don't believe so you know if we make a football game I don't think it's it's going to be something that they would take away from us you know with Casa funneling people in to get the ticket costs because we have to send a certain amount back um and it's my understanding that we brought in panels and things like that before um so it wouldn't be something that I think would be you know costest football games in the near future the one thing that concern
that I have is just the safety issue um kids out there in the parking lot things like that running out into that road if there's no fence there um you know as an administrator we spend a lot of time patrolling that making sure kids aren't out throwing footballs around the park a lot things like that but we don't ever curv it um so that's just one concern I have is if they're out there and then there's no fence up and a kid runs out to the road in that area is a concern of mine but from the cous side of it you know if we a horse hosting a playoff game we could make some accommodations where you know we'll still be able to host it just might take some you know some work on
our side to be able to do that um Vining wise so my understanding to that depending on what way the board wanted to go um I went diet there are people that could probably work with Jeff maybe do some flavor CS also for digging some of the holes and if we did move forward with it he said he could probably get to it after the first home game and the club willing to pay up to half as they get the money I mean is that something that we need to set one the half needs to be received like a year or I mean how long how long are we get to pay the see any strings attached for like oh you guys already at all I gu just for budgeting purposes it should be we
should receive that by June 2025 for budgeting fores so we can offset it in this year's budget the capital alll fund Works a little bit differently that it doesn't really matter that if we if they paid in July for example if they have a money maker that's still okay they'll still go on the capital outlay and I'll just increase our cash balance as of July 1st 2025 but when you want to offset an expenditure you want to try to get it done in the same FIS February uh any of these businesses say that uh if we don't get it approve it in the next three months or four months prices go up didn't really and there's no information on that side of it well Little Giant says days yeah most of right the quot the
quotes are good for 30 days but I I see what you're saying if it goes beyond that 30 days I would ask to I would ask for a new bid after 30 days yeah I agree I just didn't know if any of them said hey we're looking for a price increase in November you know you need to get it okay one of the reasons that the booster club also wanted this information presented um as soon as possible was because it's also felt that whenever you're try to do um fundraising or membership drives or anything if you can show what you're trying to fund it's also easier to raise funds and so we didn't want to go saying hey we're going to try to Cave the high school or build the fence without you know talking
to the board and having it approved so if those things are approved then we won't say that we're going to do it can we like say yes we'll proed only if you guys get the funding and then after you receive the funding then we proceed with the project the only bad thing is those be right if the price incre hopefully know but yeah I understand that but I just I hate to put it all out there and then for some you not come the club not being able to raise potentially benefit the school because then ticket prices comeing through the gate might increase because they have to go through that area area no because there was I don't want to say a gate there was a a cable there anyways so they'll still be able
to park up that yeah nothing's going to change on the parking spot it's just get hey if I park here I gotta walk all the way down there to come through a gate that is be the only discussion that we're going probably have I feel okay um but I see potential for the school because of the ticket price Josh is also my understanding that Gate's going to be close enough to the curve where they could drive to the gate right pay their money drive in and park park is my understanding yeah so I I see a big win-win situation for the whole thing uh the the the funding for the school because the activities uh it needs to be done because of like Miss Mur Mr Murphy said uh safety um and the booster CL
helping out were there any games last year and I'm thinking recck wise or anything else that we weren't able to host because we didn't have a fence around there well we always had that wire had the wire they take that out all all the that out if the booster club was able to put some money towards it to start off would that alleviate any of the the anxiety of of them with what you guys were saying on your side of it I don't have a problem I just think we should get into it like we're going to pay school's going to pay for what we do get back to it is what it is you might even get private donations I was thinking what about like signs on the fence like if some bus donates
thousand bucks can we put their sign on the fence and sell it that way be better I think for that whatever yeah yeah but do you see any reason why we couldn't put a banner sign whatever I don't see either way if they go through the school or the booster club I didn't know what the stipulations is on that um I don't you know there are some schools that when they join the booster club they automatically get a little Banner or a little flag that hangs at the football field you know or you know it could be something as small as at the home games you know we're going to create a poster for the ones that did you know donate to it and hang the poster up you know for that game on the
fence you there's a lot of options there that could help them with the advertising and also during the game you know we could say thank you to a lot of the companies that did join the booster club knowing that the programs to the programs as well so um how does I know like this would come out of capital Alle how does this prioritize with the other items on the capital alley I don't know what you all have bu so right now right now and this was basically not from this year there was there was from last year that we still have going we're going to have some expenses that are going to be incfort from this year with a couple of the um hiccups that we had with the the carpeting um with them not
adding the room on that at um the high school and then also some of the flooring that they had to fix up at the Wilson building as well so a little bit there and then um redoing the hot water heaters at the PO Ro um school and taking the old hot water heaters out so um really right now bud buting wise we're going to KSD tomorrow right to talk about you know the budget side of it to make sure that we have it done propriately on have so um that is something that we've had conversations about funding wise that we think we'd be able to cover out of the capital Outlet if that's the dire the other thing was the compressor for the walk in the walk in the walk in yeah so we don't
have any huge expenses the compression for the walkin can actually be a food service expenditure so can service right there's a capital there shouldn't say Capital there's a capital expenditure account number inside the Food Service budget that we can use that for the what other Capital Ally items do we have t for as of right now yeah that that's just that's just where we're at as of right now yeah once we get the school year started our plan is to go around with our maintenance directors and create that list of what needs to be done and then prioritize that and then bring that to you guys to help us Pro prioritize that for the rest of is just needed above that before we do that well I might just throw in um the capital outlay
budget has always been the last 10 15 years for essential planes is $1.2 million and now we raise it to 1.5 so we have an extra $300,000 budget Authority in there for things that could come out that so we also don't have a lease purchase payment coming out we don't have that payment anym October that's another 100 Grand right there that we that's going to cushion so I I I feel like the money's there because it's going to be half even though we're writing at all at this last year the bus the bus has already been last year um you know we we have talked about we are going to need to um talk to transportation director today we are going to have to look at purchasing another vehicle for the routes that we run
um daily that's something that we talked about a little bit at the last board meeting that we're going to bring you so that is another um kale that is another expense that is going to come out here within the next month depending on how you guys prioriti that prioritize that at the next meeting so how they need to know here within 30 days or do they need to know sooner to get on the schedule are you talking about the fencing company yeah the fencing company needs to know as soon as possible to get on the schedule if we're wanting it to be done you know well that's what they were Tam was saying if we do get a chance to go with Little Giant fitting they said that they would uh start doing it right
after the first football game after first first home maybe we do free admission for anybody that drives a [Music] pole I mean they would do it anyway so you don't have to the pot so I would make a motion to accept the offer of the booster club to split the cost of the installation of the fence do I need to specify which bid yes yeah okay and accept the Little Giant fittings bid PA second a motion by Alison and a second by Josh we add the June 30th or whatever to try and get it in this year for the booster club paying backers it matter does it matter matter I don't think it has to be in the motion sorry said it does not need to be an emotion it doesn't have to be unless
you want it to be Antion Ian so there there's a motion and there's a second already no if you want to only if you want to amend it we make an to like just have make a good show a good faith effort in paying back by June pay backun I I pay all just making good paid ever to pay something by that June 30th date I just don't want us to go like he said a year or two and happen which I'm not saying it will but it never I would Amendment sure so we're amending that motion yes I'll make a motion to amend motion to include have dist Club make a good fith effort in paying their half by the J 202 there is a motion to amend motion do I hear a second
a second by so now we are just voting on the Amendment yes so all those in favor say I I and oppose same sign the amendment to the motion passes to Z so now the motion includes to P effer to pay back the half by June 30th who's making that motion that's the am I have the amended motion wrot 6 to amend the previous motion so now don't we need another now we need to vote on the motion that we amended I'm confused but that's okay Alison made the original motion I got Allison's motion to split the cost of the installation of the fence with the booster club the Little Giant fittings than the amount so we don't want to go with that one second did that yeah I got that I think I got
that okay and thenay amended that to add on the June 30th good P effort by June 30 I got the good P Bye seconded by Doon got that voted on 60 to amend the motion so now the motion is to accept to accept the bid from Giants fitting and you're making that no she made it so it's that original motion yeah with to accept the bid from Little Giants fitting the school with the right split with the booster Closter club fromer club any further questions or comments all those in favor say I any oppos same sign motion passes I'll sorry it's okay okay Mr President I move that board go to Executive session pursuit to the this open meeting act to discuss non-elected Personnel for the topic of supplemental positions to protect the privacy of
individuals to be discussed with Mr Murphy present and return the Open session in this room 824 second second by Allison all those in favor say I any oppos same sign motion passes 6 I don't know I think it's Chad says it's big butt e e e back an open session I move to approve Jacob Ryan as the high school boys football assistant coach for the 20124 2025 season motion by Alison and second by Josh all those in favor say I any oppos same sign motion passes 60 last item is adment I entertain a motion toot byon second second by Jos all those in favor say I any oppos same sign motion passes 60 thank you everybody I just kind of to read oh y and just see if that sounds e for
