Right. Welcome to CHS podcast. Today I'm joined by Emily Martin and we're gonna talk about bowling. I'm excited to be here. >> Yes. Very fun. Very fun. How did you join bowling? Well, so I did the triyouts. They were like in November. I really didn't want to do archery again because it wasn't my favorite sport. And my grandma's a champion bowler like 40 45 years ago. So she she has like a lot of knowledge, so she taught me a lot. So I was like, "Okay, I've never bowled before, but I can do this. It's it can't be that hard. It'll be something fun." And it's a sport. When did you start bowling? Well, I've bowled for fun since I was little, but this was the first time I've actually bowled competitively. Um, so I had
no idea what I was getting myself into. Um, uh, how many people are on your team? >> Well, there were quite a few guys. Um, there was like 12 guys, I think, after the cuts. So, the guys had cuts. Um, girls didn't. So, there was about, um, 11 girls, six varsity, five JV. I was on the JV since it was my first year. Um, but you need a minimum of four per team. So, the couple tournaments I didn't go to because I had something else going on, um, there were four, so they were still able to do the Bakers, but >> uh, how do you or your team qualify? >> Uh, qualifying for postseason. >> Yes. >> Okay. So, um, postseason, uh, Clearwater and campus split up. So, um, it was me, Asher, and, u
Gavin uh, Crotch. Um, Crutch. We um we bowled individually at regionals and uh league um league first then regionals obviously. So to do that um I bowled by myself I was the only girl um even at regionals instead of putting Clearwater girls on the team since I was the only one like they just put Clearwater girl. Like Augusta, they had Clearwater girls, but straight up on the program, it was clear water girl. >> Lonely one girl. >> Not lonely. It was really fun. I got to meet some other people on different teams. So >> that's good. >> Um, do you rent or do you have your own equipment? >> I have my own equipment. So, like for the first few practices and the tryyouts, I used my grandma's ball, which was actually left-handed since she's
left-handed, and her shoes were about like 50, 45, 50 years old. So, they still worked, but like they were a little falling apart, but they worked for the tryyouts, so I didn't have to use the rental um stuff cuz it was really nice uh being able to use your stuff. It also kind of gave me like a feeling of like family vibes, you know? They're kind of great. But I got my ball off Facebook Marketplace. It was like $8. And then recently I got it drilled for my hand so it fits my hand exactly. And that was about like $25. So it's not too expensive. But new balls will run you from anywhere from 100 150 to like anywhere from to like $1,000. So my ball is a straight core and it's a Columbia 300
white dot. So it's a straight core. So it goes exactly like how how you would bowl it. So, it's like a house ball. House balls are the ones that are at the bowling alley. And then some people on my team have uh strike balls, which have like an offset core. So, they have a metal thing inside or some kind of thing inside that spins really fast. So, like it hooks, but those are those run really expensive. And I didn't want to do it for my first first year bowling. So, I just used my straight core. And it's that was that and it's a vintage ball, so I really like it. >> If you forgot or didn't have your equipment, would it be acceptable to rent from the thing from the >> Well, yeah, you can
rent and do use a house ball, although it's not preferred. So, um, the rental stuff that's included in our $50 fee we play paid u do the sport that includes our jersey if we have to rent shoes or balls and just the use of the lanes. So, um Caleb Wilson, um who used to go to school here, um he uses rental shoes for practices at least, um and he doesn't have to pay for them each time he goes to practice, so he can he can just grab them and well, he asks for them and then he just gets them. >> No stealing, you know. >> No, no stealing. But another good thing about bowling is the food you get. You can get food at like the tournaments and stuff. Like I get funnel fries. >>
They're so great. >> That sounds good. >> Mhm. Uh do you use any special super professional techniques for bowling? >> Um techniques? Not really, but I do have other stuff like the powders. So I have grip, which is like climbing chalk. Um so it gives me grip on my first two fingers and then on my thumb I use what's called slip. So it makes it more slippery. Um So, because I have wide thumbs, so they so it comes out of the hole fast, faster, and easier. So, I don't actually hold on to it and like launch it down the lane. Um, but I do bowl onehanded instead of two-handed. So, two-handed you you're kind of it's kind of like how one of my friends described it as launching a baby um >> or like rocking
a baby like this, while I do the classic um back and forward with my one hand. And if you have a two-handed ball, um, you don't have a thumb hole because it's like illegal to use a thumb hole if you're bowling two-handed, which is kind of interesting and I didn't know before this year. So, >> do not commit bowling crimes. >> Nope. >> And don't cross the foul line either. >> Yeah. >> And you'll slip in the lane. >> That would that would hurt. Um, what's your what's your best score? Well, keep in That is my first year. But um so mine was actually at regionals or league league. I built a 114 which is actually kind of terrible given the fact that a perfect game is 300. So um that was actually kind of
fun getting to know my ball after I got that was also recently after I got it drilled. So, um, it was al I also got a good of a hand to like the Valley center coach, girls coach because she also helped me since my coaches weren't able to be there because they were at the campus girls league. So, I she gave she gave me some tips and she taught me how to release my ball better, especially after I was drilled. So, yeah. Um, what's your best shot? Best shot. Okay. So, probably just a head-on strike, but I'm really good at ten pins, which is the last pin on the right side. Um, I don't know why they're just like it's just like a talent of mine. I'm really good at ten pins. Really fun. >>
Uh, what's uh what's the toughest tournament you've been in? Um probably um it's either my first or regionals. My first because you know my first thing ever. But uh regionals because um that's the only way I could qualify for state was individually since we didn't have four girls. So we couldn't do bakers. So it was a little it was a little difficult to say the least to do that. But um it was really fun. I assume you succeeded. >> I did not qualify for state. >> Um I wasn't that far, but you know, it was my first year, so senior year going to go to state. Following the tracks of Ellie, >> you're going to win every game. >> Hopefully following the tracks of Ellie. Who's the first girl to ever Clear Water? >> Yeah.
Uh outside skills you gained for bubbling? >> Um like communication and like a lot of arm strength and finger strength. So like I have I don't I don't know. It just runs in my family. I just have like weak hands. So like it definitely builds up some hand strength and like some arm strength along with like some hand eye coordination better to like aim down the like aim down the um um lane. And so that will also help me going into my golf season be able to like judge the length of the of the ball to the hole or whatever. >> Uh do you plan to continue bowling rather fun or competitively? >> I do plan on doing both. So I I definitely uh plan on doing it competitively next year, but um I'm also
planning on going bowling quite a bit over the summer with my grandma. not only for family bonding time, but like also just to keep my skills up and to learn some of her techniques from when she was a bowler. >> Uh, next semester when we're a senior, are you going to come in with giant arms, very strong? >> No, probably not. But I definitely intend to like start working out my arms to um be able to throw a heavier ball. So, most of the uh varsity girls throw 13 to 14 pound balls. Mine's a 10 pound. So >> no, uh 10 pound balls aren't just like like aren't the best for pin action. Pin action being the pins balling, but like a 13 to 14 pound ball, every time the pins at least one pin
will fall. Unless you got her ball. >> Uh do you have any funny silly stories? Well, um, so the first time I saw Well, this was Let me restart that. Um, the the funniest thing I had was the time when I accidentally gutter balled, right? Not fun, but it came up and it hit the side of the the gutter thing and it came around and it knocked over like seven pins, but it didn't count because it was in a tournament. So, it was not tournament, but in a meet. It was kind of annoying that it didn't count, but it was really funny >> that. And we also all have our own chance. So, um, >> my ch I I yell when I get a strike, I yell Kentucky Fried and my teammates will yell chicken.
Or when we get a spare, we all go sp a r e spare, spare. And then one of my other friends, uh, her her chant is apple bottom jeans. And then we all say boots with the fur. Um, yeah, that's that's like kind of the fun part because like the team the team aspects there was like a boys team that were when we were at a tournament and one of their uh strike chants was thank you, thank you, thank you and I was like, "Oh my gosh, not again." But it was quite funny in the moment. And then if we get if we leave a few after our first ball, we'll go pick it up up. on fire. It's really fun to do in the moment. >> Uh before we leave, uh do you have
anything else you would like to add? Um definitely try out for bowling. It may not be your thing, but you know, there's a bunch of awesome girls on there and the more people who do it, like just adds on to the legacy for the future generations. So like I'm the second girl to ever bowl for Clear Water. Um Ellie Weekes was the first and she literally got a scholarship and went to Barton and is or did bowl. I don't know if she's graduated or not, but like she's like a really great bowler and I wanted to try something new like she did. So, not only is it kind of cool to be like the second girl ever to like bowl for Clear Water, but it's also just like something new and a new skill that
you can continue on into like your old like like golf. pass it down generation by generation. >> Yeah, exactly. Like my grandma still has her ball and shoes, like stuff like that. Like it's just it's really a bunch of It's really a family sport, honestly. And you can't forget the food. The food is always great at bowling alleys. >> Who cares about anything? Just the food. Food's the best part. >> Right. Right. Right. Like like the funnel sticks. It's just it's basically funnel cake in like stick form. Well, if you want food, try bowling. Um, see you later. Goodbye. Bye.
