Alrighty. Welcome to the CHS podcast where we're gonna talk about Electro Valley. I'm joined by my friends >> Ashley Rail, >> Ezra Humphrey, and uh let's start. What is Electro Valley? >> Electric go-kart racing >> for it's electric go-kart endurance racing. >> Yeah, I guess. >> All right, that's fair. Why did you join? >> Seemed fun. I wanted to go vroom v room and also I could no longer run. So I >> just needed an after school activity. >> When you can't run, why not get wheels? >> Exactly. >> I mean I think that's what most people who can no longer roll do. >> All righty. Well, um, do you have any achievements in elector Rally? >> We won state last year and the year before that. So, we have a couple of trophies in

the trophy case. >> Labeled Electra Rally. >> Like, there is a big sign. You cannot miss it. >> It It is big and shiny. >> They are like the only trophies that don't match the other plaques and trophies cuz they're not made out of like bronze. It's actually like >> acrylic and wooden >> glass. >> They're very unique trophies. Mhm. >> So, you're proud to just, you know, take all the rest of the trophies out, put just the Electra Rally trophies. >> Just the Electra Rally. >> No, we're going when we retire one of our cars, we're just going to hang it up on that back wall and there's just going to be an entire car in there. >> 054 soon. >> All righty. Um, how long have you been in Electro Rally? >> This

is our second year. >> Yes. Second year. And will you join still next year? >> Yes. Yes. Um, what are your roles? >> I am a driver or mechanic. So, I fix the cars and I also drive them. >> I am also a driver and I typically focus on the body work and uh do a lot of the finer detail work for the cars. >> Very useful things. We also use batteries like a normal car >> and we we also are both report writers which is >> it's a big thing in electric rally. That's how we get our positions in our line. >> It's a big document where we record everything that happens in the season and then when we submit it, it gets our placements in line for race season. >> Yeah. Last year

we got first place. Oh, first three spots which gave us an advantage in the race season. >> Then we which won most of all of ours. >> Yeah, that's nice. Uh, sorry. Um, uh, what does everyone get to drive? >> Not everyone. Like Shelby last year, she's blind in one eye, so she can't drive. And then there's some people who either are not eligible to drive because they haven't gotten their driver's license yet >> or permit and or there's like especially some of the taller members can't fit in the cars properly. Yeah. So >> so they can't drive either. And also behavior is a factor cuz if they're too rowdy in practice then they're not allowed to drive cuz they might get squirly behind the wheel. >> Yeah. And then that >> start causing wrecks.

>> That's >> I mean for the tall people, you can just cut out the bottom, make them run like Flintstone, >> Flintstone style. >> Um, who's your sponsor and how much do they let you do? >> Uh, sponsors we have like O'Reilly, um, Evergy, I think. Oh man, I don't know. Uh >> we have some like >> Carlson company. >> We have some like individual sponsors like parents and family friends who donate money to us and uh >> some people who donate their time too. >> Yeah. And then like there are major companies who donate parts and >> or money >> and money because we are a self-sponsoring team. We don't get any finances from the school itself. the booster club. >> Other than the booster club, we love the booster club. >> Uh, what's

the teacher that runs? >> Mr. Evans, the modern world history teacher. >> How much does he let you do? Just anything? >> Um, not anything. He'll like, do you know how to do this? If so, then yeah. But if you don't, then no. Because we w we work with a lot of like power tools like saws or um grinders or welding. >> Don't want a kid losing a hand. >> Exactly. That'd be bad. That'd be a bad rep on us. He also tries to manage our behavior really strictly, but especially if you've been in the team for well two years is the considered veterans in our team cuz the team gets changed in and out basically every year, maybe even a few months. >> Yeah. Like we get some kids that seem like they want

to do it and they just switch out >> the next year. So it's like, oh, are we going to get this person again or are we not? Are we going to get this person? No. Okay. So, it's a >> it's it's a gamble on who's going to come and >> whoever sticks around with the team like Ash and I who have been in it for two years straight now. >> Yeah, we get we get a little bit more >> we get loser leashes than the newer kids. >> You get let out of the cage. >> Yeah, we get let out of the cage a lot of off more often. Like >> Monday we finished all of our things. We only had two things to do and Evan just let us go go home early. >>

Yeah. >> And then like if you've been around longer, he lets you joke around with him more often. Like he's like we can make jokes at each other's expenses and we won't get uh in trouble for it. Like if I knew our kid did that. >> Yeah. >> All right. Time for both of your favorite segments. What? Tell me a funny story. >> Scott City. >> So, you wanna >> No, no, no. You you you go ahead. >> So, we have to travel for most of our races. One of which is Scout City, which was an overnight trip cuz it's a 5-hour drive away. And so, we stayed at a hotel that night, which as most hotels now have, it had a pool. And the pool was very cloudy and we couldn't see the bottom.

>> Not see the bottom. >> There was the boys went in first. Us girls, we were in our room, you know, like doing whatever, >> unpacking, eating. >> Yeah. And the boys went to the pool and I'll hand it off to you. >> There was human excrement in the pool. I mean, I don't think I would have gone in the pool if it was cloudy. >> They They didn't tell us that there was in the pool until after we got in and started swimming around. >> It was still cloudy though, right? >> Yeah. >> It was our first race of the season. And >> yeah, >> it was the first time we got to go on a school related trip that was overnight. Yeah. >> So, we were all excited and we're like, you know

what, >> we get we're going to have a very tough day. It was a very cold and rainy day the next day. >> Very cold and rainy. >> So, we were like, you know, we're going to have some fun before we have to struggle a little. So, we're like, let's go relax in the pool. >> Yeah. And we went, oh, the pool's cloudy. It's like, oh, well, that could just be like chemicals or whatever. Little did we know. >> So, we all had to shower very thoroughly after that. Sorry. >> And then another time we were, it was actually this year or earlier this year, this first semester, we had Mr. Cox, our old the old uh shop teacher. He came in and helped us with one of our cars, 054, which mysteriously stopped working.

And he was hooking up a battery to it, hooked it up wrong, and flames. Oh, fires happen quite often in this sport. It's way more than you would expect for a driving sport. I think there's been like >> three or four open flames by accident, >> not including the times we use fire >> or lighters. >> So, I found out why you don't let everyone do everything. >> Yes. Well, um, speaking of cars, I heard that you are building another car. Is that right? >> Yes. 354. So, we have >> 054. >> Three cars right now. We have 054, 254, and 154. We're building 354 right now. And that our frame is practically done. >> We have the frame. We're starting >> Well, yeah, >> we're starting on the floor today. And then we have

some of the smaller parts like we have a few of the mechanical pieces in and we also have a uh hammock seat which holds the driver while we drive while offering a bit more protection. >> I think we also have the steering wheel done too. >> Yeah. Uh the hammock seat offers like cuz we don't put suspension in our cars. So, the hammock seat offers a sort of buffer between the shaking of the vehicle and your body cuz 054, our oldest one, doesn't have a hammock seat like our other two do. >> It has a board on the back of the what's it called? The >> frame. >> No, the c the half circle thing on top of the car. >> Roll bar. >> Yeah, roll bar. It has a board on the roll bar

that you just sit on >> and it's like >> a wooden bar, maybe carpet. >> It's like sitting in a freight train. You >> metal metal floor, by the way. >> So, it's you're just being tossed around. And many of our drivers, including us two, have gotten bruises from racing in that car. >> Yeah. And the batteries aren't really that strategically placed cuz one's here and the other one's here. So your ankle is constantly getting hit up against that and then it's like a narrow thing. So you got to like squish yourself in. >> And the batteries get pretty hot, too. So I've gotten like skin and irritation just from the heat. >> Hopefully not another fire that's going to happen. >> Hopefully not. >> We'll see. I still have a lot more. I work

with most of the chemical stuff like fiberglass, resin and other chemical solutions in a team for body work. And one of our solutions is a very particular uh one to 99 mixture and there's been times I've added too much of one chemical and >> It started smoking. It firmed up and it nearly burnt through the cup we were using cuz it gets like over boiling temperatures. >> Chemicals are very frightening. >> Yeah, especially when they start smoking at you. >> It was one time, maybe twice. Well, before we conclude the podcast, anything else you want to add? >> You should totally sponsor us. We're a very small team. please sponsor us. >> And uh some of our sacrifices that we have to make is unlike previous years, the team now has to purchase uh travel

like have to spend their own personal money on travel costs, not on top on top of food. So this year we're forced to pay for any hotels. >> Yeah. Like again, Sakot City, last year we didn't have to pay, but this year we have to pay 50 bucks per person >> for our hotel room. And we'd also like to go on more go out to more races to be able to compete even more. So >> yeah, like last year we went to San Antonio and we got fourth in 154. We don't want to talk about 254 and054 didn't even come. Oh. So >> yes, which we did have to pay for that one, but it is in huge price tag to put on each driver because it's over 200 bucks to go to the out

of state races, which is the only races we can go to extra. So if we could be able to get more funding, we could be able to get our team out more, be able to compete, and be able to hopefully bring back even more trophies and recognition for this team. The more trophies you get back come back with, you can just throw the rest out. >> No, we have actually one of our old trophies are is up in Evans room and it's on his desk and it's like a little light up thing with our placement. I think we got third place on that trophy. >> Yeah, it was like an acrylic board that's engraved with an LED base and it allows it to be lit up different colors while showing the engraving. >> That's really

cool. But I I challenge you to completely fill Evan's desk with trophies so he can't work. >> That's That's a goal of ours. Actually, >> we're just Our goal should be to fill up the office we have in the metal shop with trophies cuz we have a small space reserved for us around the welding area that's used as our office and storage area. >> Like that's where we keep our helmets. We have a lot of helmets. That's where we keep our radio so that people don't steal them. >> Yeah, >> we do suffer from the problem since we are borrowing a space from the a welding teacher, Miss Man Allen. We do have to deal with people stealing our tools and messing with our work. >> Yeah. Like wrenches or whatever or fiberglass even. >>

Yeah. I have to work in a highly ventilated area cuz I do work with a very carcinoggetic material that releases a lot of fume. So I have to move over to the large shop door to be able to get air circulating so we don't cause respiratory issues. And if I try to leave it out after a larger pour so it can ventilate, people will mess with my work and potentially endanger themselves by touching unccured resin products, which as I mentioned before get dangerously hot. Well, suppose that's essentially electro rally. >> That is electro rally. Fun but dangerous. >> Fun. Please join. >> Yes, join Electra Rally. We strongly, especially if you're a freshman or a sophomore, please, please come. >> I'm sure they will be very happy to get new people. Um, thank you for

watching and listening. Have a good day.
