What is up everybody? Finn Moore Canupper here. Welcome back to Clear Sports Talk podcast. Pat McAfee, we're coming for you today on the special edition of the Clear Sports Talk podcast. We have a girls wrestling interview featuring >> Payton Newell, Gracie Garner. >> Today we have a few questions for them about uh their junior season and uh kind of the past uh and kind of where they started wrestling and uh kind of uh the future of their wrestling career. So, we're start with Payton. Um when did you start wrestling and how many years have you been doing wrestling? >> I started my eighth grade year. It was kind of a half season and then I wrestled freshman and sophomore year and now I'm in my junior year. So like three and a half years. What

about you? >> Oh, um I started my eighth grade year and I've wrestled till junior year, which I'm a junior right now. Yeah. >> Gracie, kind of like uh why wrestling? Like why why did you start wrestling? like kind of uh why was that I guess your final decision? I don't know like why why did you start wrestling? >> Um okay well I became a manager and golly I have to explain I I became a manager and Derek the middle school coach uh saw me walk in and thought I looked like a wrestler and I was like no that's not a sport for me and that's when I started wrestling. Uh well, Remy didn't have a wrestling partner, so then I like just wrestled with her cuz I was like whatever. And um so I

just like I was like it's not even that bad at all. Um so like I just started wrestling and then I ended the season with 191. It was a good season. >> And so what was it that kind of specifically draw you to it while wrestling, Remy? What was it like? You know, I'm already kind of practicing, so I'm just going to do it. Or was it was there something specific? >> Well, cuz from my perspective, um, like from the mat, like on the side, it just it looked painful. >> Like I did not want to hurt anyone. I was a very nice person. Well, when I wrestled Remy, it wasn't bad after all. So, yeah. >> Pain. >> Uh, I think I just kind of have a competitive side. So, I don't know. I

always like to beat up my brother. So, it's like a legal way to like beat somebody up. So, it was fun. And I didn't actually mind like the conditioning. I kind of kind of like it. It's kind of I don't know. But I don't know. I like the running. I like the conditioning. It's it's just fun for me, you know. >> So why why no other why any other sport? Because there are many other sports that have to do with conditioning. So what was it about specifically I guess wrestling, conditioning, and just wrestling. >> Um >> other than like basketball. I think I like that it's also an individual sport because basketball was the other option for this season, but you know, um don't hand me a ball. I I'm not a baller. I I

I'll stick to wrestling. It's a lot easier for me personally. I don't have those skills. Ask my brother. He's a He's a good basketball player, but that's not me. I just I don't know. I like the individual sport. I like the competit competitiveness of it, you know. >> Would you agree with that? You are you do play basketball? >> I'm definitely not a basketball player. I mean, middle school basketball was not it. >> Yeah. >> So, what about volleyball? Because you do play volleyball. What about that? >> Yeah, I do play volleyball, but it's not the sport that I absolutely love. Like, I love wrestling like right now. So, >> um Payton, uh what's uh a memorable memorable match? >> Memorable match? I would say my most memorable match was probably last year at state.

I had wrestled this girl from Smoky Valley two times before and I had lost both times, but they were both really close matches and me and my coaches had kind of like worked together, you know, on what I had done wrong in those matches. And then at state, it was the last match before the blood rounds. And the blood rounds is if you win a blood round, you place at state. If you don't, you don't place. So, it was the match right before I was wrestling Smoky Valley and I ended up actually winning and it was pretty big accomplishment actually. >> Yeah, that was a good match. >> It was a good match. I don't know. It's probably my most memorable one. Um, my memorable match was probably my freshman year at home, the duel,

where me and this elder girl um she was beating me by like a bunch of points and then um like towards the end of third period I turned her and like the whole like like bleachers like just got hype and like I don't know it was very exciting and that's when I like pinned her and it it was a good match. I just I really liked it and how everybody was cheering on me. It's just my favorite. >> Would you would you say uh home dus compared to home tournament? So what what would you like what would you mind like what do you like better a home duel or a home tournament? >> Home duel for sure for some reason like those feel different like for me because like everyone's watching you and you want

to do like better and you want to like make sure like everyone knows like how good you are. I don't know how to explain it, but I just I think home doors are just my thing. I like those better than home tournaments. >> Would you agree? >> Um, I honestly think I like a tournament more. I I don't know. I yearn for those tournaments. I like the extra matches. You know, everybody's kind of like, "Oh, I don't want a match." But I I like them. I think the more the better. You know, more the marrier. I don't really care. Um, but home duel, like I do like that because, you know, I think more people show up to watch those and everything. So, it's kind of like you get to show off, but it is

also nerve-wracking because it's like the spotlight's on you. >> Yeah. Um, what is your favorite style of wrestling, Payeyton? And, um, kind of like explain it a little bit. >> Um, definitely not Greco, but it might be might be freestyle. I think I like it honestly more than folk style. Folk style is what we do like here in the high school. >> Um, it's kind of basic like you turn them for points and all that. But I just recently started freestyle over the summer and it's almost the same but it's like less rules. You get points for like rolling them on their back. It's quite fun. I like the fact that you can lock hands cuz um >> and you get more breaks. >> Yeah, you get breaks like after a period they'll come and

like fan you down with like a towel. It's so nice. It's great. You get treated like a princess. It's great. Um but during folk style um it's just kind of like go go go and you can't lock your hands. There's a lot of rules and everything, but freestyle um it's kind of like you get a break. There's shorter periods and there's only two periods, but I don't know. I like the ability to lock hands because I used to do that a lot freshman year and I'd get caught a lot on that during folk style. So, I don't know. >> Yeah, I would say uh freestyle for me because there's breaks, there's um less rules, and I mean, like I said, me and Payton do summer freestyle together, WTC. Um, yeah, full style. Folk style was

pretty basic. I really like that one, too. Greco was not my favorite. >> No. >> But yeah, freestyle was probably my top three. >> So, what is the difference between Greco and these other two? That That's not >> GO all upper body. >> All upper body. You can't touch their legs. Um, you can't like use your leg like you can't like put your hip on them like >> like if you touch if you touch the legs, it's automatic point for them. >> Yeah. >> Oh, that's it's all upper body and you gain points by throwing. >> Yeah. It's not my favorite. I don't like to be thrown. Um, Gracie, what is your who is your biggest influence and role model in wrestling? >> Um, well, I came here freshman year wrestling and there was this

one girl that beat me at Wellington. Her name's her name's uh Leyana Landreth and she's from Mulane. I look up to her. She's in college now at um something. It's like a tiger. What is that? Good question. I don't know. >> Cali College. >> No, I don't think they have. >> No, it's like a yellow tiger. >> Anyway, >> I don't know. It's Lyanna Land and she was at Morain and I always looked up at her. She was a very strong girl. Um, she had a lot of moves in mind. Like, she was very quick. Like, I've always looked up to her and yeah, I just Yeah, >> she's one heck of a wrestler, that's for sure. >> Yeah. >> Won that state title so quick. >> What about you, Peyton? Um, I'd say like

my biggest influence is definitely my coaches honestly because they've, you know, been state places before. They're always like they're just my biggest hype man, honestly. You know, they're the first people to really believe in me like freshman year. Like I wasn't expecting the success I had. I think they're really what drove my love for the sport as well, you know. >> Yeah. Um, so wrestling can be a very physical um is a very physical sport um and can definitely come with a lot of injuries. So like are there any challenges throughout your career so far? >> Uh definitely. Yeah, that's for sure. Um every year at state I have somehow been sick. So that has definitely been a challenge. It's set me back a little bit, but you know, I'll get through it. Last year

I got mono and my it spread to my liver and spleen and they almost exploded on me at state. And then this year my hip labum is torn. So >> Oh no. >> Yeah, it's a little rough. Yeah. What about you, Gracie? >> I can definitely say sickness because there's a lot of physical and some people don't know how to take showers, but that's okay. >> Um, but yeah, sickness is definitely one of them. Um, I don't very I don't get very much injuries, but there is a lot of turning s uh your like your uh shoulder, so you get like a lot of shoulder injuries, but that's about it. >> Yeah. And see this can come with kind of like almost fasting a little bit to kind of make weight or maybe eating u

overeating or maybe not eating enough, drinking enough. So like I see how trying to make weight can definitely bring on sickness. Um who are our high school coaches and kind of like what is your future in wrestling and are you excited for your senior year? >> Our high school coaches are Cooper Ross, Cody Woods, Don Chambers, and Lily Wagner. All great coaches. Love them all. >> All great people. I know Cooper Cooper Ross. He's a he's a great guy. I don't really know any other coaches, but I've interacted with them throughout the locker room during like wrestling meets or sometime and they seem like really nice people. I do remember uh Ross's dad a few years back. >> Good old Papa Ross. >> Yeah, he was he's a cool guy. I talked to him for

a little bit. >> He's so great. Such an interesting character. >> Well, are you guys um excited for your uh senior year? Um and after your senior year, do you have any um plans to wrestle during college? >> I'm definitely excited for senior year. I I know it's going to be a sad day when it's our senior night. Um especially that this is my favorite sport and for my future, I am wanting to go to college for wrestling. I don't know where yet, but hopefully it's somewhere close home. >> Any dream college at the moment? >> I really hope I go to Friends because it's close and I don't have to like drive very far and you know buy a lot of like like the room because it's very expensive. But yeah, I'm hoping to

go to Friends because it's close by home. >> How about you, Payton? >> Um, you know, whatever happens after high school happens. I'm excited for senior year, but I'm also kind of sad at the same time. You know, it is a sport that I've enjoy and I found a love for. But if I don't continue after high school, I know that that will be the last time I step foot on a mat. But if I do, if I do get that opportunity, that is amazing. I'll look into that. But, you know, for now, I'm not really worried about it. Yeah. Uh, well, thank you guys for coming on today. Thank you, Gracie. Thank you, Payton. Um, and we will catch you guys next time in the next Sports Talk podcast. See you guys later. Thank

you for watching.
