welcome USD 264 patrons staff community members stakeholders and students I'm excited to bring to you our Clear Water Clarity volume 4 uh this is the fourth edition of information that we're putting out to just help uh with our strategic plan of providing consistent and relevant communication so as always we always start with looking at the Strategic plan and kind of our process for what we're doing uh always at the beginning we're always going to talk about the why which is our strategic plan so as we talk about it today it's really providing consistent relevant communication uh the second ring out is what is it that we're actually doing to help achieve that strategic plan and then further as we get down into the uh Parts is how are we doing these to accomplish those goals

So today we're really going to focus on the what and within strategic plan number two is Implement student centered whole child programming so that's our second goal within the Strategic plan and the focus of this months is to talk about how the class of 2028 which is our current eighth graders uh this year that their graduation requirements are going to change uh for us to be able to think about what we currently already have in place at Clearwater and clear waterer High uh we are very fortunate to have all of the required classes already on our uh roster for classes that students can take a little bit of it will be to kind of talk about which areas are going to impact our students as the eighth graders roll into next year so uh overall

the number of requirements are going to stay the same that hasn't changed it's just how are they categorizing and which ones are they going to change so first off three and a half uh credits of ela plus a half credit of communications which we use speech um three units of history and government one credit of Fine Art those are all still the same three units of math which is still the same and three units of science uh still the same name uh one unit of stem electives which could be computer science advanced math Advanced science robotics Advanced CT or advanced technology we'll talk about that a little bit more that's going to be new uh and then the employability and life skills that you can see here at the bottom of this fact sheet uh

we already have the physical Ed in the health we also offer financial literacy as an elective but it'll now become a requirement for the class of 2028 and then four and a half units of electives driven by IPS planning we'll talk about that too in the following slide this was adopted by the Kansas uh State Board of Education and approved uh to go into effect so uh our counselors at the high school are already preparing uh for what this is going to take and and be working with um the class of 2028 in the spring this does not affect any student that's a current freshman through senior this would only be for the eth graders and on down so there'll be a grandfathered in uh process one of the other pieces that is involved in

this process that we need to make sure every everyone's aware of is that upon graduation all students must have two postsecondary assets what are postsecondary assets um those are things such as having a 90% attendance rate that would be considered a post-secondary asset um or having an internship where they go work at another job or an externship or if they achieve a certificate in a um field such as welding or HVAC um those are all considered postsecondary assets there is a large breadth of those uh that are available for students but what they're saying is beyond taking the classes there's going to be two other things um that they're going to be required to take it can also be having nine college credit hours it could be getting a three or a four on their

state assessment um the high school staff is going to be working with tracking this through a portfolio um that will be on their attendance graduation sheet so students will be able to pay attention when they collect those postsecondary assets the second thing is a financial literacy class class again as I stated this is already offered as an elective at Clearwater High School it'll start to be required and it'll be required either in the students junior senior year the staff at the high school feel that's the best time for students to get that financial literacy before they're on their own and the Really the focus is to prepare them to be a financially responsible citizen uh as they leave uh to start their adult life and then the last thing to really think about is the

IPS and stem electives and so um the students are going to be able to within their IPs take an assessment to just show them where their uh passions are and these assessments are like uh skills-based and passion-based uh from there it'll help them develop an individual plan of study and that's what IPS stands for that individual plan of study will help them focus on Career Pathways that will give them exposure to those skills that they will need uh for their postsecondary life sometimes that's looking at education as a pathway um uh FCCLA classes um welding and a classes that we offer or business and graphic design courses so we are lucky to be able to have uh a majority of those classes offered for students and then also students must have one stem course so

classes such as robotics Project Lead the Way uh biom meds or an advanced CTE class or advanced math class uh will count towards that uh stem course so those are going to be some of the new things that um if you have had a student in high school before and are getting ready to have another one at the class of 2028 or Beyond um those will be some things that as you're working with your student towards your graduation you'll understand just the slight differences um that they will have if you have if your first student graduating from high school will be 2028 or Beyond then probably it's going to be something a little different than when you were in high school some of these other uh requirements that are going to help us uh fulfill

some of those postsecondary needs that not only does our state economy have but the US economy have as well so again as we always continue to focus on being the one uh we understand that um we are moving into a society where sometimes um the opportunity to not treat people nicely on social media or be disrespectful is more of the norm uh these days than it needs to be and so we're going to continue to focus to make sure um as a school district our staff and our students are making sure they are they're going to be a positive light for someone uh every day and hopefully we can continue to fill that mission of one family uh one team and one District in in unifying ourselves to be the best that we can be

the last little piece of information I want to provide in this update is on November 13th prior to our regularly scheduled board meeting we have an open enrollment policy hearing um this hearing is requirement based on a new law that's going to take effect in July 1 of 2024 it was actually passed last legislative session uh in where there will be no more District boundaries to determine attendance uh all districts will be have an open enrollment meaning students will be able to apply uh to go to school somewhere if they do not live within that District uh our policy hearing that we are going to have on November 13th is really going to look at language to determine uh what non-resident students must maintain uh to continue uh enrollment at USD 264 things such as

attendance discipline and grades are things that can be taken into consideration for students to uh maintain that in the spring the board will begin working through what are the capacities that we have at each building in each grade level and then starting in June 1 we'll post those capacity uh limits and take out of District applications at that point in time and then in July uh of 2024 there will be a random drawing for students to fill the capacity slots that we have if we have any and those students will then be u considered non-resident students they'll be able to attend USD 264 but they must maintain um this the language Within the hearing that we're going to have in November so just letting you know that that's coming up and we'll be determining some

of that policy language so as always here's my contact information and we look forward to hearing from everyone uh we have had a couple of community listening tours we have uh coffee with the soup uh the first Wednesday of every month um so pay attention to our social media uh apps on Facebook and Instagram to just get the most upto-date information where if you have some uh information to share about our glows or grows those are things that we're doing well or things we could do better um please um attend those and give us your feedback or at any time you can contact me uh via email or my office phone and we will set up a time to be able to meet so thank you and have a great month
