The time is now the director former board members of Texas. reported now Texas followed by nation. God. Heavenly Father, all thanks for bringing us together our work for all provide us with wisdom as we plan and prepare our gatherings. and pray. Item two for our vision of action. Our vision of action campus leadership with responses I'm should be discuss. add to sit Perfect. Sweet. I'm sorry. with this group here. Come over here. >> Okay. >> Let's do that. Let's move the table. >> Yes. call me from your cell phone. It's like the It's going in and out. This will be okay. Just Yeah. Just want to make things worse. >> Well, yeah. You'll be a little closer. I'll be right back. >> Put a microphone. So the table is on. All right. I'd like to
have a chat about what you were able to pull from other districts. >> Okay. This is this is the one, >> right? I want to go inside I got about We did not just and one of the board members officer training at pesto burrito. So our task and I look at these ideas actually made some comments but what I have seen them on what I was going to say so um did a good job of keeping it very concise um just lots and lots of text because I think this right at the same time we have that we have our policies look like I want you to start working The book started on page 14. page 13. It has roles and superintendent. I like that. This is about That's what they have requirements. Yeah. I
like some of the rules they have over the development of the board agenda. What specific? No. Agenda contact. That has to be adjusted. President four. It's just collaboration. You have to send this together. Yes. 10 days, right? which I said I like that they I like that they have something that jumped out I can't go. onage. control. Okay. I think See the complete process. question. Determine if the interests of protection. infection. She will help. I don't know if they have right now and I will be working on this. Yes. which I think I think Anything else? And so I think that is one thing that we may have to make sure that Facebook. You're right. that we have this one out. I never saw anything. Thank you. Grand public justified. And yesterday I saw district
It's a public number. I'm not sure. kind of like you want to be secretary to officer. You want to be a vice president, you have to be a secretary to be a president, you have to be the vice president. I4 I don't know. Okay. So, can I see how can I see the comments? I don't know. I actually help. We're supposed to build I like that. Start. None of us are actual. Not too short. question. It's hard. I'm taking my dessert first. Thank you. Thank you. That's awesome. Well, I love that you got examples and the hardest particular from local after this election before we can give you this process for example, so that's a good starting point for us. Typically, those will stay the same among the type of subjects for us. So they
can go in there if any of the different >> Yeah. Yeah. If you can add a little bit to them as long as it's not going to counter the policies. So um yeah one question is typically on the last page it always clarifies just operating procedures if any lawyers just clarifies that in case >> and and I'm glad everyone because every time that the law changes um I'm going to encourage y to always let me back up. I want to encourage y'all to to always get the habit of bringing chunks of policies forward for review as a board and that means that you would have some of the standing item from time to time if not every month. Uh that way you don't allow your policy to get out. But then two remember because we
did your policy dial which strengthens more along with the framework which means more along the research that that we currently have. Um and so Texas we're lucky because everything seems to be going kind of hand in hand. In other states very very different. Uh there are a lot of statutes to encourage black. Um I think I said the last time in Arizona their board members can actually open up accounts on behalf of the school district uh since we can undo that right but we can't write policies discourage that behavior. can't I was just going to add something close to missing or I appreciate that special meeting. out of her what I'm hearing then is that you as a board because you just re policies review policies It's a good time not for you and to
make don't hesitate make changes that way as I'm helping you. I'm going to do this uh with with legal to make sure everything align. Thank you for bringing those dig and get some good material going. Um for this one I want to ask you this is what we discussed last time these governance workshops and we talked about you know getting in front of students at some point staff community. This obviously carries over to your school. No, I was asking >> you because now we're jump now. jumping together or we're doing the one on we have to do background we have to do three governance workshops now and hopefully September one with students one with staff and one with community members and the members would uh anybody who will sign up to run for work. So,
uh this is this is this is a great part. This is like really getting our hands because Dr. will will speak with us but only the beginning after that I actually did email Miss Austin like the kids what they so I don't know where that listen to So I can connect the two groups because what they're working on is obviously listening. This is how it works. I said they're not complaint sessions and they're not campaigns. So be mindful that this is for them. Does that make sense to you? So these right here they cover the listing where the question that I asked them was what do we want our community to better understand from your better understand? And it's okay if you don't have answers to those. That's the purpose of two listening. That group
is going to do more listening. and educating that capture what's happening. So one of the ways I encouraged them I said the topic of speaker and they said no I said well right maybe students once a year each group once a year they're likely to pick up things that you may expect. So that crew's job is to listen and try to extract as much information. That way it's also not just one of you saying well the community who are talking to you I want to hear from them as well create a systemic approach to listen that will be this eventually in what your group is. So once they get all these um the themes of what's happening and what they're hear they they want to switch to purple uniform and that just keeps coming up
and keeps coming up. you have supported and you can probably address workshop where your education questions wonder answers to the You put the first rounds are easier. This is what we're doing. So they will have to have their Not necessarily because in the beginning we're just going to give an overs. We're going to hear from them too. We're going to be listening but you're also going to be giving them more information. If they get clos why is it why don't That's not really on us. Glad you asked, but we do have superintendent in the house and she's more than welcome to address that quickly. But you don't want her. But if you are able, it's ideal, right? Because then the community can begin to see the role in real life. The board is asking questions.
We're telling what our role is. something that's out of guess what% >> right there. >> So ideally this is going to give you roles that are given to your community and students and everyone that you end up being able to get in front of that's about transparency. So that you can you can also prepare the future trustees so people learn about what you're doing they can this and then strengthen trust as you build the more you listen the more you educate those gaps questions I might consider have a discussion here in particular what misconceptions Take some notes. All right. I've got someone can fix their complaint. posters almost misconceptions. People see I think people think that we could They don't know that exact What about I think that What's up? Okay. Let's make Never. working.
Okay. I think I could answer questions with the board within the board members. number two. >> Oh, okay. connections. Family connection. They think that We're here to protect How about answer? Maybe they just think that we just don't want to answer. They're not conversation. those questions. >> Is that good for confusion? That's about answering that question. What kind of friction? We may hear from other people because I'm talking process. Okay. that What was that? Number three, who needs the this workshop. >> What? Why? Christmas. Those are not Okay. Commissioner whoever last difference. I'm hearing What would everyone understand? Make sure that picture. You should turn around. It wasn't the people think that we can fix it like they're going to come to me and I'm going to take care of That's a big question. I
had as a board member. They think that they're going to be a different They think that when our meeting over here and I I wonder, you know what I think about saying that when we said this is a different and I wonder people thought I should have been saying that's why I used What confusion? What confusion? Family ties, friendships. They wonder why we get on their spot. They ask us a question. I wonder why people cannot respond. Anyone interested? All stakeholders look like a picture of water. Good work. So to some degree you have a teacher and parters. So everything's good. With that said, it's the answer those those responses to those questions give me a lot more clarity on how I can help you with your work and how I can help you put
your slides together. But what that would be and it's a great one that we can put up on screen, but you just explain to them. You're just like, "Look, When you come to the board, we can't be proactive. We have to be respond to simultaneously because you say, "Oh, can do that? So that's the parts being able to speak to why you should have why you did policy diet. Why do you evaluate based on those practice with me if you have time and then see how it goes with you? I'll be with you. I think so. But but I do want I do want to put the pressure on you to do this yourself >> because eventually >> you're not all the time. >> No, >> the board's not going to work. Amen. Can I
tell you that last >> we did get We did this. So this will go action. That's not you're going to be the person that workshops. The reality is that I want my kids ready. >> Yeah. But you're right. You're right. You didn't just start there. You started with a reason why. But that's not what the average person Yeah. You know what? It's also highlighting. I need clarifying it's not just aboutademics. It's not just about money. So it's a reflective reflected I love the conversation I can make out about special educate students with special education I heard superintendent she also described you go to some of your folks I can't make that up to someone that's in that department or someone that's overseeing that student >> for the special yes. So it's the special education director.
Um when I when I saw that that was part of the star presentation, you know, my first thought was that directly on the right side I didn't apologize because I'd already had a conversation with them very less than 100%. So everyone straight there and they they came together and we uncovered because that was a guardrail because it is something that was asking question but we found because we're having such a hard time. So, we had to stop that. So I don't just easier because I did have parents only parents. You can do 10,000 that's going to be their kids. That's why you know when I saw that oh wait why is there why don't seems like every time there's noral ask your first one open the basics and seek to understand how to receive facility.
The question I want to make working on and Give us a principal question all not just I want kids who are not not just kids who are involved but those who are not involved I don't know how many kids I 15 kids that >> we had said maybe we had said maybe student council officers But they know what you're saying. Why are they not involved? I mean, I have a number else April 30th. >> April 30th. Mhm. So many kids I looked at them. I said to you an hour and a half. >> They're not even a rush. I'm not going to be boring. Especially if we're getting the things that they really want to know. Like they're going to want their classes are classes and >> hour and a half. I want to create
a buzz. >> I want to create a buzz. I don't know how we can do it. And I have a superintendent of teachers revolve 100% around them. Um, so I think the person kind of overs a little bit so that when they bring up a hot topic that will give you a chance to jump answer. What do you propose? after testing. So over there I checked said, "Did you get my mail?" I don't know. I don't know. to get my grandson get home from school. Yes. Wow. But I don't think is in order support is a strength of what I think I'm responsible for based on your responses or personal with the young people. Um what support do you want from me? I think for the first time if it should be so I'll be
wondering >> what we know Well, I like that you have to get their attention. I know you are. >> We'll see. >> Okay. >> The question is what time frame? Um, she didn't say >> to right after sleep. Maybe the end of the day from there. Or do we want for them to get out and go tell their friends? I will work on you. Okay. >> I will also work on script that way. I will stick to it because depending on what happens, right? Have an idea of what my ideal script would look like. definitely have something to follow. >> We don't We have school kids and we have high school kids like >> that this group on this session, your colleagues over here on what you're saying, what you're thinking as far as watching
your first two listening communic What was his name? on your first flyers pass But even though what you said there, we need to reach out to those other kids involved and NHS can help us. That's right. That's adults. It's all just because it was breakfast with the board, right? They changed Remember we said that's a third option right now because you're and talk to them about Christmas. Wherever you get what you're much better. >> This is not ready. And so for them, we're talking about what kind of format do they want? Do they want coffee? But because shack already, it's more already just keeping that structure. >> Yeah. and then just being able to ask questions which you'll see in a bit to prompt the download. So that's why people first and then she also
right there just one group that's not even the students here but looks like we get the students We got some motion going. >> Yes. on the agenda for >> and if it goes because we ask really good question and then here question some of the questions that they're think about asking What does our school is? What would you like to go for? So they're opened, right? We're not giving up yes or no. They're really their imagination or whatever in their heart and we'll have some questions that open she'll get her. Next one was the trusting rules and that's but then I asked him what happened to friends here. Okay. The changes it's no longer uh among the board. I make decisions. Uh I can kick a chair if I want. I can get mad. You
know, it's not that anymore. That's what the governance is about. So they need to understand why they're doing that well know and then they can call I get two people. Their idea is that they're looking for co-signers for bringing people in or getting invites to the board to come into their room. Uh and this is important. It's very very important that anything that anybody on the board or superintendent gives a commitment to an answer to that you do follow up with him is that wait to give you a response. So it's really important that whatever following activities like what you wish to start processing this is the utmost important to spend time with you the ultimate sign of respect that we respond or you know what that's not my role but I'm glad you asked
that this also house to speak to them with her. You're already teaching them that's not my outside meeting. So on that day with another group, but I am going to work with you to make sure that you're ready. We'll ask questions. >> And then when they come back, we'll ask just to kind of save time. You want to walk kind of a little bit, right? that role. The team said they think the board members can fix their complaints. Um they said the board should be able to tell the superintendent what to do. Other conceptions include we're here. We're just here before the meeting that's after the meeting is over. We're done with our work. Others are there's a hidden agenda close meeting that only talk about close session is what's on the agenda for sessions.
So the most friction team or family connections you were saying that one of the team members saying they think that we're here to protect them just like one person and often times community members wonder why you can't why the board can't respond when they ask a question during open form. So they're not familiar with the laws, how we govern ourselves, how things are, you know, and then who needs this the most and said all I agree that that was everybody on the board was clarity reduces confusion that's what the success look like picture of what everybody and I talked about at the just like how powerful is it going to be when everybody is board members district personel community members because we have so much clarity um and so much collaboration in our work so
I think that's >> so we agreed upon right we're going to engage for And what ranges are we looking at? >> I'm not sure if you guys or >> if I get if I get a preference, I'd say 8 and 12 just for the first row. >> Yeah, because I almost feel like I have to separate But I don't want to underestimate >> you know I learned you I think you still are, you know, they're going to be honest. They're they're not going to, you know, bring you that. Wow. I'm sure some distance are naive don't know you know and for them it wasn't a big deal that they were completely And then we got a date and the time I'm going to be sending based on the responses that to the questions I've got
a pretty good idea of what slide deck we may need to put together for the students. Um, and then just kind of some logistics that I'd like to consider in preparation, you know, are we going to feed them? Are we not, what's the room? Just the basics that way. And then I'm going to come and I'm going to co-le with the team. That way they can be in the passenger seat and then they can jump in from time to time. Uh, but we anticipate no more probably an hour and a half or so. And hopefully we get the young people walking out of here pretty excited just like what you're anticipating. And then my hope is that both groups are kind of complimenting one another. I told them your role is to extract as much
information from people as possible that what are going to be like as we progress questions. I have a question. >> Yes. >> At what point >> each year >> whatever decision I make there's no guarantee. So each one of us needs to make sure you know what I'm here. There's no guarantee. So what is each one of us? We all need to know what each one of us, right? So yeah, so this Austin already knows the question I should ask next. What ideas do you have to make sure that both teams are moving the same direction and know what side of the board is? Yes. >> Well, yeah. I mean, you can, but like what's a what's a what's an actionable thing you can do >> to ensure that you find out you get to
see what >> correct? Yeah. >> What do you have to do in order for anyone else to know? >> Post it. Just post it. >> Just post it for the public to know that a forum may be present together and be very clear that it's an eldest workshop with students >> and you can be there and you can participate. Um that's the way you can do it. You doesn't mean that you can't be there. It just means you want to be transparent. And that guess what that's a lesson for them as well. Anyone you're in the room with all everyone everyone's talking to everyone. I'm here supporting my committee and my colleagues. They they let them work on it. I'm here to learn and grow with you. That shows a lot of humility and leadership.
Like I don't have to do everything, but we're working as a team. So yeah, that's a that's a very option. I'm glad I push that. same as what you're working. >> Yes. Do that if they want to do what you're doing. >> Correct. There are there are no hashtags. It is for transparency that they have. I mean Nick before >> that's true. But in this segment, I think that I would hope that community would would appreciate you for doing that for doing good and putting it out on public consumption. Young people, hey, by the way, you're talking about this. We can't we can't talk to them when they're here. Well, this is the reason why we're hosted. Like no person, everybody knows that stuff. Well, when my board members come to my school and come
to my classroom and they interact with me and now the practice is connecting to the theoretical stuff that you're trying to get to them, they're like, "Okay, we call it the practice. It's when the theory and the actual stuff come together. You're bringing everything that you theoretically been discussing and doing, you're mixing it now with these things. She came in and I was your question. adult. Miss Emma, do you know mention the cafeteri the same day. school. I have superend. I utilize some of the students that were already processed. last couple minutes I want to practice again because from this point on I know some I've learned a lot and in my last couple years I'm coaching quarters I have always waited towards the end to teach you how to code your board meetings all
my new boards I'm teaching them on the front end and I'm also assigning a different board member to code their meeting so that everyone can learn and understand how important the conversation that we had last time together. So I'm on this side of the room. I want you to tell me um where it's in the coding. Those three different ones. Remember, And I'm going to share your February 17 special. Probably action. the same thing. Today's action here. Okay. second. The taker Don't trust yourself. No, normally normally it would fit under any special guides fall under synergy and teamwork because it's a required but you still data that's still part of the job that's all connected to your goals and honestly this is usually where school districts ever talk about student achievement of most sports around
the state the country this is the only time in Texas that they talk about student achievement zero looking It's called Which one? Which That's not process. session. Session Yeah. All right. Except that Yeah. Over here. That's how I learn. I can't. >> Yeah, because that one prayer actually straight in. I had a horrible number. Yeah. >> No, it is. It is the same, but there's a distinct difference. You notice that there's a blue color. What is the goal? There's two options outcomes or >> what% they're good with this. But they're not golden. >> Because you'll notice when we punch in the bits there, it'll differently. Where's >> Which one? separate You would think it, but there's one that's very clear for bubbling because anytime you're bubbles discussing voting on agend Okay. >> Good job. It
is up. And ID has minimal others on your agendas which as you keep reading the research it just says right you create more space to talk about the main things goals doesn't mean you don't talk about other hot topics because I can't beat up around that around the country but we're shooting for 50% that you spend your time on students Anytime you're voting, consider action system process. other than Yeah. already. >> So if you're just doing basic math, like remember teamwork doesn't work against you. So executive section, these 33 minutes, cancel them out. They ain't got nothing to do with with the with the minutes. If you have public comment, it wouldn't turn against you. As long as it's on something on the agenda. If it's something that's not on the agenda, then it will
have to be coded as other. Any idea why TA is pushing in that direction? They give you a free one if it's on an agenda item. They kind of leave you on the minutes if it's not on agenda item for public comment. You can't control, right? So why you make TA? >> Well, if if it's a public comment and they say, I want to speak on the agenda of this one, it's synergy and teamwork. But if they come and they say, I want to talk to you about facial hair, It's not agenda. Then why do you think TA would make you count those minutes towards the rest of In other words count against you? >> It's not an agenda. Why would TA say we're separate the two types of public comments? >> It's all depend
on. You're right. The law gives you that you have to but the timing you have flexibility around. There's some person if they have over 30 and there's flexibility in their work. What's your question? Why would TA say, "Okay, if they're gonna talk about another Jedi hurt a little bit, why would you?" >> Yeah, they're going to be they're going to be subject. you're doing this and that, you have less people come to your board meetings talking about things that are not because you're stayed. Does that make sense? >> You're educating and you're listening. And so that do that consistently have less public comment on nonchalant things per se because they already feel hurt. they already feel educated. So there's a less likelihood they're going to do that because they're going to understand. I'm going to
go to the board meeting and I'm going to talk back to the board and I'm going expect them to give me my answer and they're not giving me my answer. But when we do this and this now they understand the listening session or I went to go to that workshop with and then I'll have a conversation with because we can talk to each other >> well to some degree you read you read the script all the time they can you all as a team can respond with factual information. You might open up Pandora's box because they may not be enough because you cannot get into it back and forth. Well, that's a whole another's that there's a lot of things. One, I would encourage the president to call for a recess. Just say, "Hey, like,
hey, I'm calling a recess." Depend your policy says, I'm trying to remember what your policy says. Do you need a second or do that? Some boards the president has the authority and some of the board has president that be good because in an extreme situation you need to calm things down. But you know if you mess with my kid might get a little >> just anyone's president they start getting control just say we're taking a 5 10 15 minute break we'll we'll reconvene in a There are there are videos there are videos on YouTube that when I was on board that people were so angry they come and they start question and it still come back to this. If we're being proactive, people go down, they don't have to come here. They can come here.
All right. So, these are awesome. So, we have other if you're looking at this kind of knowing that this is not going to come against you. These are that will not count. If you're looking at students, I think you're looking for the month of February. >> And then your third, >> your third and 14 of those were actions. So they were So, I'll fill in your spreadsheet, but my next event who's this one >> like creating something like this, everybody write codes on a virtual Google. >> You know what makes and this is where you your team could help. You see how I film? >> If you will do that on your agenda >> and already mark these are other and then put little put a little thing on the bottom. What do you call
it? Um, >> no. Like >> like were you explaining like >> if you put that at the bottom of your watching and that you're educating them, you're letting them know we're trying to hit these numbers more than the other. And then they look at your agenda and they know, oh, you have your agenda. You're actually monitoring them. It's just it's a way that a lot of courts have this on stage. >> Yeah, you can do it. Somebody might do it during the meeting, but I mean it's completely up to how comfortable you are. You can run, you know, like you as the president, you already got enough on your plate. But this is a chance for someone to take terms. And then if you have this already filled in by by the folks on the
staff, all you got to do is just check. So for instance, time. >> And on the bottom, you're explaining what each one is. So let's just break down. >> Well, no. Hit me up if she has any questions. Yes. So she'll help her. parentheses and then also your board agenda saying that you stay you got a great agenda. I would I would accept it. I would just add this >> if you look at other people's >> long So I would just put on the next general functions. >> Okay. >> Just just and then that will help you with also as you're as you're writing these out what I ask you put everything underg but I know how I know how to code in your case. I'll be able to help him to be able to
clean it up even tighter as far as like student. >> Yep. And those are like the final pieces for you as a board to know >> where we're spending our time. >> Okay. >> Thank you for joining. Thank you. Thank you. >> That's all I have, my friends. Okay. So, I'm happy if you want to sit down. All right, we got one more check. Yes. Considered it and we had voted on it because now the kids are just better. They're not stressed about my grandson, too. I was going to ask you was there April 1 Yeah, I put on my notes within a week. No, less than a week. I'll get you the slides for you. Well, they're saying the windpr So did one side >> and then at 5:30 after that. We're trying to
see if that's the cafeteria or the library. CC. >> All right. So, some actual stuff. I'll work with the team to make sure that you'll just go back and see how I'm going to hand over the Excel spreadsheet. question. question about the support. It automatically calculates the minutes for you, but I'm going to be able to hand that over to the board. Whoever's calling, you can punch in the minutes and you can take ownership of All right. >> Yeah. Come up with some smart questions. Please tell me what you see in the data packet and I can help you formulate a smart question. >> Are y'all ready for me to send you one of your first meetings? Are you ready for me to send you one of your original meetings? business. Okay, let's stop that
thing.
