So that cannot be considered as part of the bid discussion. >> I would like to read a statement from one of our board members that couldn't be here, Shannon Dean. She's out of town on work with her work and she she lives in that area. She said, "I would like to start by saying that I realize that there is a discrepancy between the bids we are considering, but as a soul board member that live in that neighborhood and represent the district. I have heard from many of Bird Creek resident directly. They have expressed their desire to see a nonprofit such as Academy Mazique to occupy the property full-time. We have heard had community meetings and residents have informed that the buyers could could develop a school or

a nonprofit. Residents overwhelmingly stated, "We want to see a nonprofit in that area. At >> this time we'll have discussion. >> Um I have a question. Excuse me. Dr. I I know you were at some of those meetings that she's referring to. Can you elaborate on that or confirm what Mrs. Dean is saying? So, we had multiple meetings with uh residents of the Bird Creek neighborhood and uh I would even venture to say that some outside the neighborhood just outside uh had showed up that were in the cater uh attendance zone. Uh the first meeting was one to inform them that we would end up walking away from catered and that was uh during the time of opening Samson Howard and we explained the reasons why to the community and of course naturally they wanted

to know what's next. What's next for this building that's in my neighborhood? And so I I shared every possibility. I shared that you know a developer could potentially buy it. uh shared that a school could potentially or um school system could potentially buy it like a private or charter. Uh also explain nonprofit. Uh the second meeting uh they they expressed interest in nonprofit. The second meeting we had was a meeting to really elaborate more on what they wanted to see. Um they had talked about if it was to go out to bid for a developer that they would want a subcommittee of residents to be involved in uh shaping some of the specs of the bid. Um that would go out to make sure that um whatever developer purchased the property that it would conform

to the standards of Bert Creek uh the neighborhood standards. Uh and then it was an opportunity uh to discuss nonprofit options as well. And um I guess for lack of better word, we kind of or better words that conversation led to ultimately what would you want to see here? And it was overwhelming that they had said they wanted to see nonprofit. At that time they knew that uh one of our biders was highly interested in it and so they you know called that one by name uh and asked to uh have an opportunity to visit with them on what they would do for the neighborhood uh how they would assimilate and become part of the neighborhood and what exactly uh they do in terms of scope of services. And uh after that meeting once again

the group the input we got from the group was that they uh really wanted this particular nonprofit. >> I'd just like to say one thing too. We you know we we built Samson Howard and Thornton Elementary to take on those students and you know if we had another school in that area possibly we could lose students to another type of school. So I I think it we do have to look at listening to what the community has to say about it and protecting our investments. We've already invested in school district for them. >> About how many um kids do we know are in that area like walking distance? >> Uh I don't know about walking distance because that varies on the home. Some parents would say, "My kid can only walk to school if they

can see the school from the front door." >> Uh some will say that my kid can walk to school if it's five blocks away, sight unseen. Uh but the number of students that we had in the cater zone that was roughly in that neighborhood, it's probably around 130 140. Um and that's elementary students. Of course, you may remember that we extended the zone all the way out by Jod's to try to fill the school. It was a bilingual campus at one time and it was full at that time. We moved that program out. Uh we stretched the zone after that. That really went to parts of the community that were closer to other elementary schools like Scott or even Jefferson. Uh so I'd say about 130 or so would be in walking distance. Well, maybe

walking distance, but in the neighborhood. and Brandy um about how much do we get um funding wise from the state per student? >> 10,300 she said >> I thought it was 139 a student. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> How many students would you have to lose to make up the diff for that difference? Well, if you did the 139, that'd be about 22 students would make up the difference. >> There's not very many. >> You're talking about the difference between the two bids. I mean, we have to talk, >> right? The difference between two bids. One one bids at uh 650, I believe, and one's at 900. So, just mathematically, if you did 139 a student, uh you're probably talking about 22 or so students. That would make up the difference. And that's That's over

time in a single year, three years, five. I mean, I don't know how many years that would take for that difference to to close the the delta. >> Thank you. I just um I mean this is the decisions we have to make we I we all take very seriously and I know that there's a discrepancy in the the money amounts but um as someone who's grown up in this community and and been a part of building our district up my whole life and and trying to be good stewards of our taxpayers and people who who ask us to listen to them and we seek your input and your conversation. We really take it seriously before we make a decision uh about these things. And I just really think that um listening to our community uh

and all the input that we've gotten from that local neighborhood, I I don't live in that neighborhood, but I have friends and other people that I work with that live in that neighborhood and I've consistently heard this is what we would like to see. We want to make sure that whoever comes there is going to add to our neighborhood, not detract from it. And um I just think that um listening to our community is a better value than a short-term profit. So our long-term trust and faith in what they've shared with us and what they've let us know that they want is where the way we would possibly need to go. I I like what you said about short-term and long-term because I've been thinking about that a lot. Um I do think it's our

job to manage funds faithfully, of course. Uh but I also think it's our job to uh consider input from our stakeholders uh especially those in the area that are affected by that decision. Um and to protect our enrollment um and uh increase that enrollment as our population grows. So, >> is there any more discussion tonight? Members, just want to say before we vote tonight, I will be abstaining from the vote. If there's no more discussion, uh, I'll entertain a motion. >> I'd like to make a motion that we approve the bid submitted by Academy Mosique to purchase the property located at 411 L Trail in Temple, Texas. known locally as the Kada Elementary campus for 650,000. I further move that the board approve the following findings. Selling the property to the charter school is likely

to result in long-term negative financial impact on the district, including impact on exceeding the difference in purchase price due to the anticipation of loss of students and enrollment corresponding with such state funding. Selling the property to a local nonprofit serves the public interest by preserving the community trust in the district and selling the property to academy music is the best in the best interest of the district. Motion made by Mr. Gaines. Is there a second of this motion? >> I'll second. >> Seconded by Mrs. Meyers. All those in favor of the motion, please raise your hand. Any oppose? same sign and the note my abstension from the vote. The motion passes. Thank you. Item C is the board committee reports. First one is the policy committee meeting minutes from April 29th, 2026. And Mrs. Cook.

>> Thank you. The meeting was called to order at 4:32 p.m. SB546 and the report submitted to TEA on the status of our bus fleet as well as the cost to comply with SB546 were discussed. A motion was made and seconded that the board of trustees determine the budget does not permit the purchase or retrofit of buses as required in SB546. The motion passed 6 to zero. The meeting was adjourned at 4:36 p.m. The next policy committee meeting is scheduled for June 24th at 4:30 p.m. >> Thank you, Mrs. Cook. The facilities committee minutes minutes from April 30th, 2026. This meeting was cancelled. The next committee meeting will be Thursday, May 28th, 2026 at 4:30 p.m. Item nine isformational items, athletic program update. Steve Prrenis Welcome. >> Click or you click right. All right, Mr.

Posey board. Um, this is my next athletic presentation on the up where we are in athletics. This we do this every two years. So, um, we're going to jump in this and get started. I say that do what turn on. All right. Uh so I want to start with just well first thing we did two years ago, two and a half years ago when I took over was we start our our core building blocks our attitude, effort, growth and grit. And that's what we uh emphasize on a daily basis throughout our programs. And so just a quick reminder, attitude being positive, coachable, and having improvement, effort, relentless energy, non-stop, growth, 1% better, daily learning, and then grit, tenacity, sacrifice, and toughness. So we we we talk about these on a daily basis. We uh you'll

see me put them in lots of our our communication and uh it's something that we our coaches have embraced and our kids have embraced and we're going to continue to do it. uh 20 the last time two years ago when I was here uh goals that we had set at the end of that presentation we talked about increased participation numbers strengthen relationships with teachers admin increasing visibility on campus strengthen communication with coaches and teachers and increased community service participation. So I'm just going to go a few of those that we did over the last two years. Um this slide shows our enrollment our participation numbers in athletics. Um 23 was 870, the 24 school year 914. Last year 960 and this year we're at4 participating throughout the sport. So we are increasing our participation. It

is a challenge uh because there's so many opportunities out there for kids and and we have kids as you saw tonight that are involved in so many other deals. Uh it's it's a challenge with their time, but we're we're finding ways and and I'm excited where we're where we're going on that where we're still projected to continue to increase participation. Uh relationships with teachers, administrators, what have we done the last two years? Uh we've uh we have leaders, our leaders, our coaches in weekly PLC meetings are not just sitting in them, they're leading them at the campus level. I hear that from principles all the time and and get sent pictures. We're presenting at staff development up there. those some of those pictures there is our um our maps team that was uh that presented

at our I think it was our February staff development meeting for the district. Um we're also hosting lots of teacher appreciation events. You see that picture there on the balcony there from the home football game we did where we had invited teachers from each campus and their families to come watch the game from the new complex which was a huge hit. Uh we do a Christmas open house. We just got through our teacher appreciation week. So, we're continue to find ways to to strengthen those relationships with teachers and administrators. Uh, increase visibility on campus. Every day, our coaches are in the student center first period and at C lunch, greeting students, helping administration. Uh, on testing days, our coaches in the student center helping students get to their assigned rooms. With our new testing coordinator,

we're able to access that from our phones. So, if you walk in the student center on any testing day, you'll see five or six of our coaches out there catching every student as they walk in the door, pulling their name up, and getting them in the right place so we can get testing started. Uh, so that's been a huge help. Uh, I think it's been a it's been both good for both our our our admin and our coaches to and with those kid interactions and we're interacting with kids that aren't always in athletics, which is always a plus, too. And then the other deal is uh really been pushing and you'll see is we've increased coaches attendance to TSD events. That was a real big push of mine was we need to support each other,

not just our sport that we're in. And so, as you'll see that those you'll see lots of coaches at watching other kids events and bringing their kid their their teams with them. And I think that's made a huge difference, too. Uh strengthen communication. Um I send out a bimonthly newsletter. A lot of y'all receive uh I also send out a weekly email emphasizing our expectations and strengthening our culture. Those usually go out on Mondays with in between the newsletters. Um, and then picture there, we have uh assistant head coaches meeting, assistant coach meetings now once a month. Uh, this year we kind of did a head coach academy. So, we bring them in and and I would go over things to work on for those to for those to help get to the next level

to become head coaches. Uh, so that was a big hit. We're going to continue that. We're going to switch to some different topics for next year as we move forward. But, uh, those have been a big hit. Those have been really fun to do. It's been we do them at lunch. All the coaches have the same lunch. So, I'm able to bring them over. uh we'll get a few quick pizzas and and do it during their lunchtime so they don't miss instruction. Uh and it's it's great because we have a facility we can do that in. Uh so that's been a huge and then that second picture there is uh when we had some principles over touring the facility and we were talking little weight room stuff there. Uh community service big deal of ours

obviously a few pictures there. Senior citizens Christmas dinner that's the huge one that we do that makes a huge impact with the uh city of Temple. We have nursing home visits. Uh softball's been doing those. Volleyball, athletic trainers, football, cancer survivor dinner. We just finished that one up uh last month. Uh and then the spring scrimmage community event on that Saturday where we have the inflatables and the snow cones and all that. It's been a huge and then this year we added the TSD trunk or treat event down here and uh uh we did the uh candy drive for that and it seemed to be a big hit. So if that event keeps going, we will continue to do that. You had a lot of folks show up, didn't you? I remember that. More thanuge

kind of exceeded expectations on that uh on that first first year doing that, especially with all the other ones that are going on at that time. But that was a big event and >> we made it work. Uh we made it work. And >> more candy this year. >> We'll get more candy this year. If we continue to do that one, we will jump in board and do that. So, our kids had a good time, our coaches, uh, and and and that was the that time of year is really busy for us at most of the time of year, but with football going right in the middle of o, you know, end of October, uh, the doing the candy drive was was an easy way for us to participate, uh, and let let fine arts

provide more of the manpower and worked out pretty well. >> Yes, we're getting more candy now. Yes. Uh, so that's one of those. So, that's kind of a highlight of what we did, what we said we were going to do the last two years. Uh, I think we met most of those goals. We can always get better. We'll continue to get better. And so now we're going to switch and kind of what are my highlights for this year. Uh, so first thing I want to talk about is honest game software. Um, that's a comprehensive software program we got to help our kids get to the next level. We had a lot of different uh processes that we were using to help make sure kids were eligible at the NCA level. Uh, and some sports were

better at it than others. Uh so we were able to to partner and and get this honest game software which has really helped. It automates the academic eligibility for college sports. It's a partnership that we use with athletics, the counseling department and the high school leadership. Uh so that's been a huge plus. Now the counselors and us were all on the same talking the same language and have access to the same software. So when that kid shows up trying to figure out what classes to take and when they mention to the counselor that they would like to try to play the next level, the counselors can log right in and make sure they're on track. So that's been huge. And the other deal with the NCA, they the NCAA has approved your your classes that

you offer on your campus, whether or not they meet their NCA requirements. That process we had for getting those approved wasn't was very uh it was broken. It was a broken process. Uh they have a the system there. We submit the class to them. they submitted and got approved. We were able to get 72 courses that we were been teaching and offering that that the NCA wasn't approving approved now. So, that was huge alone just for that one factor this first year to have 72 more classes that meet the NCA requirements. And some of that was just because they would help us rewrite the the description of the class to meet what NCA was looking for. Uh so, Honest has all that partnership, has all that experience and has worked with well with that. They

also provide us eligibility reports and show us how many kids are on track at the division one level, the division two level, the JCO level. Uh and then they allow us to provide provide the students with recruiting profiles. Um so it's a great it's a great software. We're just getting into the the we've the surface of it we've got. We're going to get into it more as we move forward. Uh but really been a big plus. So that's one of the things I'm pretty proud of that we got going this year. Um, and then this this could be the whole presentation right here. This one slide. 17 out of 18 programs made the playoffs. We had six state qualifiers that was in wrestling and powerlifting, one state champion in powerlifting, 33 academic all-state kids, 90%

passing rate in athletics, 43% of our kids from the ABN role. And then the bottom three, six out of our top 10 students academically were athletes this year. And the valatoran obviously girls soccer, salutator, and tennis. And then of the top 10% of students, 36% of them are athletes. Um, so our kids are finding a way to be in athletics and stay on top and be in lead in the classroom, too. So, >> this is the most impressive thing I've seen in a long time, the number of our kids. >> And it's it's our coaches are doing a great job, our kids are doing a great job, and so uh uh they've set the bar high after this year. Um, so we'll continue to reach that though. That's our goal. U next one, CDL, commercial

driver's license. huge issue, huge issue in the district with with drivers and buses and transportation. So, we have 30 coaches now that have their CDL. That's a 40% increase from last year. Uh 11 new coaches certified this year. And then if everything goes well this summer, we should have 40 coaches certified to drive buses follow 2026. And they're not driving just for us. Uh they fill in for uh advanced academics when they need a trip. and during the day and transportation camp provided, they're we're the first ones to get a call for that to try to help and we can work it out with our coaches schedules and this and that. We we've done that. Uh we've done some counselor guidance stuff to took them to Charlton for some of those that were on a

visit there that where the counselors needed a bus driver because transportation didn't provide one. So, uh that's a huge deal. Um it's been a challenge, but uh the coaches are starting to buy in. I've kind of forced that a little bit because I've signed them up. uh transportation transportation does the training now here and so instead of me paying them to be in the wait room that day that what they were paying to get in the weight room they spend all day getting the training. So it's a they're getting some compensation but not extra because it's uh compensation they've normally been sitting in the wait room doing for us. So uh we swap that out and make do to get those those certified and transportation has been a huge help with that. But that's going

to be big because uh I don't want to be the one that has to say we can't go to a game because we didn't have a bus driver. Um next deal to thank for y'all that y'all approved a strength and conditioning coach. Our new strength coach, Coach Roose started in March. Uh some of the things he's already implemented in the last two months was Rack Coach software which is performance tracking, athlete evaluation, accountability, and workout management. uh that all our coaches now have loginins to and can help set up their kids and make it easier to track across all the sports. It's great for him. It's great for me as the athletic director to be able to see that all in one place now. Um he's been able to educate our staff. He's been doing

training sessions for them. Um which has helped increased our vertical alignment on on our what we our vocabulary in the weight room and how we how we train in that. So he's been going down the middle schools and then on the girls athletic side has been where we've seen the biggest jump already with him is it's more organized, standardized, consistent and he's been able to what he's provided is uh our coaches out now participate more in the weight room and have more confidence because he's provided them with the with the uh coaching techniques and the vocabulary. And so uh I'm excited where we're going on that. Like I said, with a with starting in March is not ideal when to bring in a strength coach at that time as far as so I'm excited for

this summer to get some more things going and uh see where where he takes us. U but um big big asset. Really appreciate us getting that done. Uh another position that fortunate to now have is the middle school athletic trainer. She started in April. Uh already in that first month, April, she did over 70 treatments on middle school kids. Um she's increased our parent communication at the middle school level. So she's been able to communicate with parents daily, which has been big. And then she's really helped with the uh education of the athletes at the middle school level of of of what how to that how to take care of their body, when to go see the athletic trainer, what all those preventative stuff too. Uh those pictures there, the new training rooms uh at

Bonum and at Travis. Um so she's been huge asset. really really excited for for where we're going to go with that. Um she starts she put a calendar out so she she works out of Travis couple days a week then she works out of bon the other two and then she goes by and sees Lamar two or three times a week also. Uh and with the projects we got coming up. I think Lamar gets a training room also at some point. So we'll have space uh dedicated space at Lamar for her to see patients at too when we get there. So but uh Aaron's done a great job. I tried to hire Aaron uh as uh the assistant here 20 22 years ago. Uh she turned us down then and we're lucky to get her

back this time. So uh uh Aaron brings a lot of experience and is really helpful down there. So really excited about that position and very thankful for it. Uh and then the biggest one since we talked last time was we were in the process of building the complex. Now it's built. We've been in it about a year and it's been phenomenal. Uh meeting space. Uh academic departments use it. English department transportation has been has had some of their meetings in it. Region 12 transportation had a meeting in it. UILDC meetings. We've done appreciation nights. We have some uh uh TVI TSI testing tomorrow going on in there. Um we've had some AB AP and IB testing and uh techn is going to use it next what about about 10 days from or next week I

guess. Yeah, next month. So, uh, so that's been huge to have a facility. Uh, and one of my goals was to make sure that everybody got to use that facility. It wasn't just athletics and it wasn't just football. And so, I think we're really getting that done. Uh, site visits. We've had several school districts come in that are in the process of either just passing bonds or going out for projects. Uh, Gatesville, Brian, Midway, uh, Coppers Cove Academy, and that one that got cut off. there's Allen ISD have all come and tour the facility uh and have stayed in contact and uh as they're designing theirs. So, that's been that's been nice to know that ours is on the forefront of of everybody's out there. Uh and then always love it when they use our

facilities and and promotional materials out there at the trade shows and this and that. And right now we're in the the PBK architects trade show materials. RFS weight room flooring uses our stuff on all their promo stuff. Power lift weights does Cornish Medical for all the athletic training room equipment. Perry weather our our weather tracking system uses our stuff. Uh and then Perry's uh with the laundry facility using our pictures in our facility. Um so that's always good. That's good to have our our our stuff out there across not only the state but across the nation when they're at those trade shows in my opinion. Uh so to next or in 27 28 when I'm back here doing this again goals that I hope to be able to tell you that we've accomplished is we're

going to continue to hire and retain quality coaches. Uh a new one for me is I want to find ways to recognize and celebrate our multisport athletes. That's very important to me to have multisport athletes and we have lots that do it but as I looked around and figured we don't do a lot to to recognize them and so we're going to look we're going to find ways to recognize those that are in two sport those are in three sport and then there's a four sport one so forth uh to kind of highlight them and and and celebrate them throughout the year. So that's that's a project I'm working on. And then uh the third one there is this day and age with with everything being streamed and you can stay at home and watch.

I've got to continue to find ways to make sure people come to the games, get to the stands uh at all our events. So going to really start looking at ways of things we can do to increase attendance, physical attendance at the athletic events. We want it that the stream is here to stay. I don't think UIL or anybody else is going to put that back in the box. Uh, but uh it's a double-edged sword. It's great for my parents to be able to to log on and watch, but I hate it when the my neighbors are logging on and watching instead of coming to the game. But um so those are three three big topics along with our standard athletic stuff that I I really want to work on uh as we move forward.

And that wraps it up for my athletic update. Any questions? >> Members, any questions? I just I don't have a question, but I just want to say appreciate all you do for athletics. I've seen the back end of it. So, very proud to know you, to have worked with you, and to be on this side as well. So, keep being great. You really set the standard with the staff and this district. So, we're second to none. And Steve, I just want to say uh thank you for continuing to emphasize community service with our students and uh for encouraging that academic excellence. Um because athletic ability will take them far in life, but having all three of those just uh takes them even further. And so I I appreciate that you're making our students so well-rounded.

Thank you. >> And Steve, we've come a long ways in the last couple years. I appreciate your leadership and making this happen. I agree with Mrs. Myers is right. You know, community service at the athletics and also the academic that's important that all of our students are combining that. And also, I'd like to say too, we appreciate the way you're supporting all sports. It used to be, you know, mostly just football, but that's all sports. So, we recognize all of them, which is I think it's great. >> I'll just make a quick comment. U really piggybacking on Brasia. Um, I think many of us in here that have been in the district for a while can say that, um, you know, when you see someone doing the job, but they don't have the title, they're

trying to find a way to lead without stepping on people's toes and so forth. But when you get the title, you're expected to lead at that point. And um, and since you've gotten the title, you have done that. And I know you have focused on some things internally um as well as ideas you've had all along um working with coaches and community and you know th this presentation in my mind has your fingerprints all over it. I mean you won't you won't take any credit. You've already given coaches and students credit. Uh, but you deserve a lot of it and I really appreciate how deliberate you've been and intentional on working on things and uh, just really improving the experience for our students and coaches. You've done a great job, Steve. You really have. >>

One more thing. I'm sorry. I should have thought of this since we have so many of our fine arts people in the audience. Uh, thank you for also allowing our students to participate in both and we have so many that do. Um, and and I appreciate that as a as a parent. >> It's crucial. It's it's a challenge sometimes. It's not always easy, >> but it's the collaboration is that's important. >> We've had heads a few times, but we we find a way to make it work and and it's a good partnership. >> Well, very good. Anything else with that? Uh no other f other items on our agenda. We're adjourned. Thank you very much for attending tonight.
