six o'clock like everybody to stand so we can do the flag salute. >> I guess I'll start it. We'll have little kids here next month. I hope. >> I aliance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. >> Thank you. like to welcome everybody. We normally don't have this many people in here, so uh welcome. Thank you for coming. Um one of the things I would like to uh read off the bat since we do have people here and I have some people that have signed up for the um public comment, there is rules involving public comment. I just want everybody to be aware of those and because I don't want you to think that
we're ignoring you or something. Um, you need to sign in, introduce yourself and state uh, you know, your affiliation or what what it's about that you're here. Uh, you're you you have three minutes to address the board. Um, refrain from uh, discussing the performance of any employee or interpretation or application of the district labor agreement, including grievances. Um, and we can't respond to you in this meeting. Okay? we can follow up with you and we will definitely get with Mr. Darling or whoever else is involved in it to definitely follow up with whatever concern or comments you have. We just can't address you in the meeting because you were not on the agenda to where because this is p public comment. So we will definitely listen to you and do not think we are ignoring
you at all. We just can't uh speak back to you and ask questions and things like that. So I just want you to be aware of that. So, welcome everybody. We're going to move to the uh approve of the agenda. We do have one alteration to the agenda. We are moving uh Rob's report number nine to uh in front of the executive session. So, we'll do that before we go into executive session. Anything else? Any other changes or anything? Okay. Are you going to new move new business up there too? >> Uh new business will be after because I think there's some things we have to do based on the executive session. >> Okay. >> So we'll do that at that time. Okay. So we're going to move on to uh u public comment. So
I have two people. I have Steve I have you and I have Jason. So, if you'll come, you can come right up here and uh one of you at a time or how however you guys want to do it and you have three minutes to uh let us know what what's going on. And >> all right, I'm Steve Tino and I'm uh regarding the situation of uh the way it was handled as far as getting uh my daughter Natalie Trino inside the high school trophy case. And I just wanted to express how I what kind of the situation I had to go through and how her handled. Um, I already said my name, Steve Trevino. I'm with my wife Jackie and our daughters Natalie and Meline. I'm here tonight to address a concern that I've
encountered with the Vanu School District athletic director. Almost six six months ago in March, I reached out to the athletic director to ask what it would take for my daughter to be recognized in the trophy case outside the high school gymnasium. That means with a plaque photo and a list of accomplishments, Nelly accomplishments. Natalie graduated 2023 and during her four years of basketball one which was impacted by co she achieved multiple awards and recognitions. The athletic director initially told me that the recommendation from the for needed a recommendation from the former coach was required. I then contacted Natalie's former coach who submitted a detailed rec recommendation to the elect director in March. After several emails back and forth, I was told that Natalie did not meet the eligibility requirements. When I asked when I asked
what were those requirements, the athletic director said the recommendation needed to go before the Troy case committee and be submitted be submitted on an athlete plaque nomination form. This raised many questions for me. I've spoken to a few former and present Gramby High School coaches and none were familiar with this committee or these guidelines or this nomination form. When I asked further both the guidelines and form, we were suddenly provided to me, which seemed odd since they were never mentioned as part of the process to Natalie's former coach. He never knew about any of this process. So, according to the guidelines, Nie was el ineligible because he he she had not been selected to the all-state team by the Associated Press. However, Nalie was in fact selected to the All-State team by the Washington State
Girls Basketball Coaches Association. Through my own time and research, I learned the Associated Press stopped sponsoring the All State team in 2017, and the Coaches Association took over that role. Dan Taylor, the director of the WSGBCA, even wrote a letter confirming this and describing this honor as prestigious and state recognized. To better understand the eligibility process, since I was not getting clear explanations from the athletic director, I requested the trophy case committee meetings from 2020 through 2025. The HR director could not provide any such records or seem she was unaware such records even existed. As far as I'm aware, every meet every meeting that the school is involved should have meeting minutes. There was none. I'm left wondering if there was even any meeting to begin with. board member. Since March, this matter has been
delayed and mishandled. I honestly feel that athlet director has lied to me when it came to elability process eligibility process. Plus, I should not have to track down a state associate director myself to validate my daughter's accomplishments. That's something the school should have done themselves. I feel like I shouldn't have to do it. I should not have been left without any clear answers. The lack of Grammyy's high school principal's lack of knowledgement has only added to my frustration. As a result, I know I've reached out to the superintendent and sup assistant superintendent for their guidance. The superintendent has contacted me and explained that this will take some time to resolve. Although I do not agree that we should have to wait until a third school year, I'm willing to be patient if it means this
matter will finally be handled properly and fairly. Um, this evening I brought with me the letter from Dan Taylor, the coach association director. Nalie's former coach recommendation emails and documentation of Nalie's high school career that I previously submitted to the athletic director. Um, so as far as I see it, I feel like uh I've been lied to and um I've been presented with false requirements that no coach or no one's ever heard of because I've asked I've had to go out and do my own research to find out about coaches associations and press associations. And I feel like it was all just to get a Grandia High School female athlete recognized, which I feel like the school should want to do. I shouldn't have to fight for it. Um, I just want to say thank
you for your time and listening to my frustration. My hope is that the board will review my request and address it without requiring us to wait until another school year. I also respectfully request that this matter be placed on the agenda for the next board meeting so it can be discussed and resolved in a timely and fair manner. Thank you. Thank you. I appreciate it. Thanks. You'll have to leave with us. >> Yeah. >> Okay, perfect. >> Do I pass them out or just put them all up here? >> You just set them right up here. We'll pass them out definitely. >> Jason, thank you, Steve. >> Good evening. My name is Jason Garza. >> Evening. >> So, I'm not here for a complaint or anything. I just want to speak on I had the
privilege of coaching Natalie and just would like to speak on her behalf. Um, so Natalie is is the definition of a Grammy Greyhound. I've got to watch her from preschool through graduation, volleyball, basketball. Um, I was there for her career high, the record setting 36 points. Um, I was there for her thousand point game. Um, she's been an example for the youth kids that I've coached and I'd like just to see something as a volunteer coach in this town where I can give the young girls something to aspire to. I would take my team to watch her, my daughter looks up to players like Natalie and it's something that the trophy case I would like to see. I don't and I don't know what if there is guidelines or there isn't. Um, and what what
those things are is is I would just like to see something that as a volunteer coach I could provide to these young these young girls that are playing sports and say, "Hey, that's where you you know, this is something that you can do. It's for the for the future kids and and those that walk through our hallways and and give them something to aspire to be." I mean, it's I mean, she's a homegrown product and and what more to say to our kids and and say, "Look, this is possible." and and just really putting that out there for the community and for the next generation of kids and future generations to come and see because the kids I've had the privilege of coaching they got they looked up to her they look up to they're
some of them in high school now and so we want to continue to build that and if we can provide this for the the youth co we have tons of youth coaches in this community and say hey look we do that the Grammy does a good job of getting the AEU nights for the kids there and when they show up they can see those kids that like I got to watch them play and then you know that we're going to build that generation of of I got next, you know, and so just really wanting to see and understand and learn what what what we can do as coaches, volunteers, and and help and make these kids want to light that fire to to get into that trophy case and be the next legacy in this
community and in this school district. >> That's that's all I have to say. >> I appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. >> Thank you for this. I appreciate it. >> Yes, sir. >> We definitely uh get back to you through Rob and uh we'll we will get back to you. Okay. So, we're going to move on to uh we have the ASB team is here. Hi, I'm ASP treasure, Emma. >> And I'm Luis, uh, the assistant treasure. >> So, we're just bringing you our weekly news from the high school. So, tomorrow is actually National Suicide Awareness, and HOSA is teaming up with ASB to do hope rocks. So, at both lunches, we'll have rocks and we'll have painting and just anything kids want to put on the rocks to help inspire each other.
Um, Hispanic Heritage Week is September 22nd. Starting September 22nd, we'll have activities and end uh cultural assembly. Um homecoming week is October 20th through 25th and homecoming dance is the 25th. >> So our first pep assembly or first pep assembly is on Friday and this is to prepare for the football game that is going to be happening that same day. Um, last is next Tuesday, which is essentially a leadership conference where we get to go and connect with other schools and u get more ideas to improve the high school and the SEWAC sportsmanship forum is next Wednesday. >> Thank you. >> Okay, we're going to move on to the consent agenda. Um, anybody have any comments or questions on the consent agenda? Have a motion. >> Got a motion to approve the consent agenda. >>
Second. I second it. >> All in favor? >> I opposed. >> Motion carries. >> Thank you. >> Thanks. >> Okay. So, now we're going to move on to Dr. Darling's report. >> Yeah. And um did did you all were you all here to talk tonight? >> Yeah. >> Just if you wanted to hear us talking, >> we'd love to talk. >> Would do that first? >> Yeah, let's do that first. >> Okay. Go ahead. Come on up. >> You dressed perfectly for the meeting for my living, right? >> My name is Angel Martinez. I'm the DECA president this year. >> My name is Jacob Niches and I'm vice president. >> Yeah. So, we just want to inform you on the >> Hold on one second. I'm sorry. Can you shut the Thank you. want to
be able to hear you. >> Okay, perfect. So, we just came to update you guys on the upcoming events that Becca is going to be having. Um, so the first thing that's going to be happening hopefully soon that we're waiting to start is the haunted house. This year, you guys, last year you guys may have went um to Kamacha's event where we hosted the haunted house in his um chiropractic chiropractic practice. And um this year we're moving down to the fairgrounds because we've gotten so big to the point we've got 3,000 people come to um the haunted house and this is going to be mine and Jacob's event that we're going to be writing about um to go to state or to area and then to state. And then next thing we're going to be
doing is powderpuff um which we host every year. If you guys we were going to need volunteers. If you guys want to um contact Miss Charvette for any volunteering >> I can referee again. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> I like throwing swags. >> Okay. And then the other uh fundraisers we're doing right now is the pop sale. So we're having any DECA members that um want to sell pop. Um we're selling it to our community to like families and friends. And then if any of you guys are interested uh we have pop to sell. >> Yep. And then also we are going around asking uh businesses for our t-shirt sponsorship. So we're going to go around ask businesses if they would like to donate to us and then we sponsor them on the back of
our t-shirt. >> Yeah. This year our money we are planning to go to Washington DC for a conference. Um it's a power trip. Last year we went to North Carolina and we learned a lot on how to better our competition skills. So, how to properly close our competitions. Um, what a judge is looking for in a competitor. And we actually got way higher presentation scores when we went to state this year after going to that conference. So, we feel like it's very beneficial for our officer team to go to these power trips and then come back and bring back to our chapter and let our students know how to be um better competitors here in Grand View so we can start placing at state and go to internationals on different competitions. That's what we're focusing
on this year is um just being better competitors. Um we do a lot of community service. I feel like we should start focusing now on being more competitive this year. you have anything else? Um, >> oh yeah, if you guys are wondering uh how you guys can help with gravy deck and with our students, we still are doing our uh practice role plays in the high school um closer to competition. Um if you guys want to help with the haunted house, um you guys can come and help. >> Yeah, the haunted house. We're going to try to do it more than one weekend. So we're cuz right now we're partnering with Graanby Rotary Kamacho to host like one big like Halloween thing. So like a trunk or treat and then their canopies and everything that
they do. Um I is going to be one of them or >> Yes. Okay. >> Are they doing trunk or treat down at the fairgrounds this year instead of downtown? >> Yes. >> To make one big event like >> Okay. >> So maybe two a weekend, whole weekend, Saturday, Sunday with everything. um if it if we end up figuring out how to do it. If not, we're still doing our haunted house. Um and because it's just a fun thing that the community can do and not just Gran View, but Sunnyside, Froster, Mapton, all these surrounding communities can come and check out Graan View and see what we have to offer. >> Awesome. >> I have two questions. >> One is when's Powderpuff? >> October. >> It's the weekend of the 25th, so it might be
that Saturday. >> No, it's Wednesday. It's every Wednesday. Yeah, it's Wednesday, so it' be the 20 >> 22nd. >> How much is it to sponsor the shirt to get your logo on the back? >> You can give however much >> however much you want. It goes from 75 all the way up to 500 is the business sponsor. >> Okay, that was my two questions. >> Any other questions? >> Thanks. So, >> awesome. Thank you. >> Thank you for coming and sharing with us. Thank you. >> Okay, now we'll go to uh >> All right. Um, good evening board. Uh, here's my superintendent report for the week. We had our coffee with the soups last week. Uh, thank you uh board member Steman for coming joining us in the morning. The morning we had a large
the larger group. Um, we had some conversations around requests for an additional transportation stop down by Garcil's because of the new developments back there. And um, the person had already gone through director and then through Brad and then came to us and uh, and actually yesterday I went with Chris and drove through the neighborhood with him so he could show me why we could or couldn't do some of the things that that the person was requesting. And so I was able to talk to her firsthand about um some of the the because they said, "Well, this should be easy. This should be but uh but if you drive in a bus and there's one car parked in one spot, it'll jam up the whole thing." It the the the roads themselves in the new developments
are fairly wide, >> getting to them is sometimes the issue. And so, uh, I told them that we'll start working with the developers out with the city of Grand View to try and help these new developments make sure they have access for us once they start getting big enough where they have more kids in there, larger turnarounds intentionally for our buses and such. And so, um, we talked about absence policies. One person asked why we're adding so many new administrators in the school district. Just to clarify, we've lost all the new APs of the high school and we're just replacing them. And same with the middle school. Like, oh, we thought you just hiring new administrators. want to make sure you're not losing any teachers. And so I assumed I I assured the phase that
that was not the case. And um some good conversations in the afternoon. Oh, in the afternoon we had a conversation around on our website your two positions were swapped as far as district one and district 5. And so um one of our our community members brought that up to retention. So we quickly fixed that. >> But we had some good conversations. And then we had a a student superintendent student advisory council meeting this morning. And again, thanks Chuck for being there. um hasn't really they hit the ground running for being their first time back over the summer and they're still continuing headstrong with the anti-hate speech work, but they're also trying to figure out how now we do the layer on what's the next issue that students want to address. They're talking about vaping and
drug use. They're talking about mental health awareness and how to help students feel belong, how to increase relationships with students and teachers. So, they're going to put out some more information to the students, help the students figure out like of these, what do you want us to focus on? So, they're doing good work. Then I provided a list of all the upcoming open houses as an FYI. And then October 1st is the the district's first big all family event that'll be at the middle school. And course, >> do we have any information to put out yet? And maybe it on the open houses about the upcoming levy. >> Not yet. Amy's working on it. Um the hiccup we have is the first thing we put out has to be the only thing we can only
put out that for the rest of we can't change it. >> Okay. >> And so we we were trying to we were actually following the plan that was laid out the last time the district went out for a levy by Elena and it didn't start going whole hog till October. And so this kind of I asked Amy to have this ready for this week and it caught her off guard. >> Well, we failed that one. >> Yeah, we failed that one. So we shouldn't follow completely, should we? Yeah. So, so long story short, no, we won't have anything available for this first open house. >> Doesn't mean we're not pushing to have them ready for the next ones for the no school one ready. >> Okay. >> Anything else? You can't be done yet. We're
not even done. Well, he's an overachiever. >> Wait. >> Okay. At this time, we're going to um go into executive session. with 40 minutes. And no, I'm just kidding. Okay, don't close the door >> with 10 >> tens.
