001OSD Board Recap Gilbert Lamont - District 5: I'm Gilbert Lamont, District 5 Board Director, and here are a few highlights from the Olympia   School Board meeting on Thursday, March 12th,  2026. Much of the discussion centered on public   comment and student voice. Several Olympia  High School students spoke about the future   of the Evergreen State College pool and asked  that it remain open, noting its importance for   swim programs and community lessons. Students also  raised questions connected to Policy 1005, asking   how students know their voices are being heard.  Throughout the evening, students, board directors,   and community members emphasize the importance  of student voice and continuing opportunities for   student feedback at our secondary schools.  You also heard public comment on proposed   updates to Policy 1400, which addresses meeting  conduct and public comment procedures. Community   members shared a range of perspectives.

002Director  Fullerton noted that the conversation is often   less about the mechanics of public comment and  more about people feeling seen and heard in a   public meeting. The public comment signup window  has been expanded to 96 hours, closing at 4 p.m.   on Wednesday during the week of the meeting. In  superintendent highlights, we heard an update on   conversations about the Evergreen pool. Addressing  immediate maintenance would likely cost tens of   thousands of dollars with significantly higher  long-term operating costs. We also celebrated   students returning from CISPUS Outdoor School,  recognized Educational Support Professionals Week,   and congratulated Olympia High School senior  Aiden Stoker, whose mathematical artwork was   featured in the Desmos Global Art Contest. Student  Board Representatives Emma McDonald, Vy Le and   Malachi Cardona shared updates from their schools.  Juniper Hummel-Church was not present. The board   also reviewed resolution 684, first

003reading of Policies 1005, 1400, 1620, Procedures 1005P,   1620P and a secondary reading of 5410. Thank you  for staying engaged with Olympia's public schools. Olympia School District Questions for the Board? Reach out today! [email protected]
