All right, we've got some good stuff to get to tonight. We got a full crowd, which is awesome. Some people to highlight and uh and lots to do. So, first, let's get some business stuff out of the way. Uh we need to approve our agenda. The administration recommends the board of directors approve the January 20th, 2026 board meeting agenda. Do I have a motion? >> So, moved. >> Thank you. Do I have a second? >> A second. >> Thank you. Any discussion? >> Seeing none. All those in favor say I. >> I. I. All those opposed. All right. Motion passes. All right. Few consent items to get through. You've seen in your packet. Um the administration recommends the board of directors approve the consent agenda items for the January 20th, 2026 board meeting. Do I
have a motion? So moved. Thank you. A second. >> Second. >> Thank you, Tom. Any discussion? >> No. All right. Seeing none, all those in favor say I. >> I. All those opposed. All right. Got that out of the way. How about some good stuff? >> Yeah. Hey everybody, it's school board appreciation month this month. >> That's why you see all the fun banners around the boardroom. And um we we are just so thankful to have these five board members leading this district. Um it's truly a a pleasure and a blessing. And to kick things off, uh we're going to ask Mrs. Brovich from Maple Lawn to come up and introduce her Maple Lawn Huskys that are here to recognize the board. Okay. Testing. There we go. Okay. So, good evening, President, members of the
board. Tonight, we would like to begin by sharing some things straight from the hearts of our students. While you devote countless hours to important decisions for our schools, we don't always pause to say thank you through the voices that matter the most. and those are the students that you serve. Our Mapleon Husky students would like to share in their own words what your work means to them. At this time, it's my honor to invite some of our school ambassadors from the Huskys, Mapleon Huskys, Brandon Chidik, Carson Robertson, Brent Norland, and Julianne Jensen. Would you please come up and join me? >> You're gonna go first. Thank you for helping our schools and creating safe learning places where we are known, valued, and supported. >> Thank you for supporting our teachers and staff who help us
learn every day. >> Thank you for making decisions that help all kids, even when those decisions are hard. >> Thank you for believing in us and wanting us to have a bright future. >> Thank you for supporting programs like art, music, PE, and other activities we love. This music program means a lot to me because my mom is a awesome music teacher at Mapleton Elementary. >> Thank you for working as a team to make our community schools better. Like when you listen to families, teachers, and students when making choices for our schools. >> Thank you for spending kindness and joy. Like when you greeted us trust as elephants to support the kindness movement, it made us smile and feel cared for. Thank you for giving your time to help schools even when it means being
away from your own families. >> And to all of you, thank you. Um, we have a little plaque here for you. To each and every one of the members, it says, "We wouldn't be the team that we are without you. Proud member of an epic team. You are the piece that makes the difference. So, thank you for all that you do. Way to go, Husky. Picture with them, Lisa. All of them. >> Yes. >> Yeah. Will you guys stand up front? They want to get [laughter] You need them to move a little. >> Okay. >> Oh, yeah. Parents, come on up, please. Thank you. You get to be in the photo, too. Baby at all. It's okay. Thank you. >> Thank you. >> Okay, so let's keep the valley theme going. Uh Mr. Baines from
Summer High School, want to come up? Got some more great >> students to recognize. Thanks, Lisa. >> Well, first of all, happy school board appreciation month. There's a small gift from Sumar High School there. Um, just want to thank you for for tonight uh in terms of recognizing Keith and and these four young men that are here, but not only those four young men, but the uh um the entire the entire team. It it's an a feat to win a state championship. It's it's an amazing feat to win it back to back and taking the road that these young men have. I'm not going to spend a lot of time, but where's Coach Ross? I have a little little gift for you that I want to give in in front. Mr. Gains, if you would
pull that out. If you would come on up. I want to present you with the game ball. Brother Matt assured me that this came from Lance's arms when he crossed the goal line. >> This is the real one, Lance. Yeah. Here. You can hold it. >> Hey, we want to thank you for uh having us here tonight to recognize us. Um we're really lucky to play in a district that values sports and the connection it can have with building young men. Um I talk to my colleagues around the state and they don't feel supported from their districts or their building admin. And you know I always tell them that we're 100% supported our district values um student athletes and um you know we're given the sport to create an elite program in the state of
Washington and we use football as a vehicle to hopefully make great young men to go out into society and be young men. I mean, great men, fathers and husbands and employees and workers and and you know, we're just blessed to to play in the valley. Um, the valley is a really special place and we brought along uh we brought some really good ballers this year right now. Okay. Um, so you guys introduce yourselves. >> Um, I'm Sean Griffith. Uh, I'm a senior and I was a captain of the football team and I just want to say thank you guys so much for everything you guys do and support our team and make sure that everything goes smoothly. Uh, thank you. Uh, [clears throat] I'm Austin Glever. I'm also a senior. I'm a captain of the
football team as well. And, uh, I just want to say thank you guys so much as well for all the support that we get from you guys cuz without you guys, you probably wouldn't be able to do it. Uh, I'm Elias Isac and I'm a senior. I was captain of football team and, uh, we just appreciate you guys making the process a little bit easier, like being in this district and having that support from you guys. It really means a lot. >> Uh, my name is Lance McGee. Uh, I'm a senior at S High School. I really appreciate you guys for taking me in. Came here from Yakma. Uh, very far move, but you guys welcomed me in, and I really appreciate it. Thank you. Uh, Mr. Baines, thank you so much. And Mr. Gaines,
I was joking with him. 1998, he called me. I was in Reton High School teaching there, and he called me and offered me a job over the phone. And little did I know it'd be 28 years later. So, thank you, boss man. And Jeff, thanks for all your support as the AD previously and our building principal. My wife back there, Tracy, she's been on this journey with me for this college, this coaching journey for 30 years. Um, and you know, you have to have a really supportive spouse to to make it work. She knows that um, you know, what we're doing here and and the impact we're having on on young men's lives and she's been my partner with it. So, thanks babe. Appreciate you. So, just thanks to the school Sar School District. So,
we know that um Tracy is with you all the time. So, this doesn't flowers don't do justice for what you do, but we did get you some flowers just to recognize your partnership and We have certificates for your for your voice. >> Thank you. >> So, I just have one request for next year, Coach Ross. >> Yeah. >> If you've ever watched a football game with me, which some of you have, I don't like close games. I like I like I like a nice lead right at the beginning. So, like score a touchdown, let me relax. Right. That would make everyone's time much more enjoyable. Yeah. Oh, no. That's awesome. Thank you for being here. We really appreciate seeing you. >> Yeah. Great stuff. All right. Any Did you have any other superintendent comments? Okay.
All right. That brings us to board member comments. Uh, Bill, you want to kick us off or? J night. Okay. >> Yep. >> Looks like we have one more. >> Okay. >> All right. Why not? Jen Knight. >> All right. Thank you. Um yes, we do have a presentation. We're going to go up the hill, way up the hill, uh to Tahali Heights. And thank you for having us. Um I brought a few leaders with me. um we try to educate our students on what the school board actually does as we get to this month. And so as leaders um sharing leadership uh they do a lot for our building and helping all of our little ones as you know we have a lot up there and so they read to our kinder and um
first grade and so I had asked all of you about some books that you remembered when you were younger. I didn't tell you why. Um, and so what we thought would be nice is to grow our library with those books. So they held memories for you. So we want to see if they will hold memories for our students. And so um I have a student who is going to share just a little bit um about this dedication for you. Thank you for your service as a school board member in our school district. This book is dedicated and in appreciation of your time, leadership, and commitment to students, staff, and families. Your service helps shape strong schools and meaningful learning opportunities for all. Did you did you >> This book will be live in the Tahali
Heights Library as a reminder of the lasting impact you've made. >> All right. And we have a quote that will also be on that dedication. Um and so it will be dedicated in your honor and we'll share which book you um that you have there um that says uh thank you for your service as a school board member in the Summit Bounty Lake School District. The book is dedicated in appreciation of your leadership and commitment to students and schools and will live in the Tahali Heights Library. And the quote is a book is a dream that you hold in your hands by Neil Gaiman. So um you have we'll share your book and then we would love a photo um and then that dedication will be in the front and you're always welcome to be
a guest reader and can come on up and read your book anytime. And so again, thank you for inspiring our students and then hopefully the memories will be um as meaningful to our students as they were to you. So um Tom, we picked a nitty-gritty gritty ninja for you. It just seemed fitting um the little Yes. the little bit that I have learned it goes with our character strong. Um and so we have that one for you. Um JB, you shared um a love for um some horses and so we know that we have of course some young ladies that were already checking the book out on my desk. Um Skippidity John Jones is always a favorite. So Kevin, you said you read that to your family. I don't know how because that's very difficult.
So kudos. A lot of practice. So we did not have this one. So we picked one that we did not have. Uh Dr. Dent, the magic of me, my magical choices. So, this is again one that um is very good with our curriculum for Character Strong. And then Erin, you had picked um about Winnie the Pooh. So, we had the one, but we did pick a different variation. So, we have Winnie, the true story of the bear who inspired Winnie the Pooh for our students. And then Bill Gates. Come on. Oh, the places you'll go for Bill Gates. So, yes. So, we're going to hand you your um book and then if we could get a photo with the kids and then the dedication we read to you, but it will be placed on the
inside and placed in our library. Thank you so much. Thank you. >> That's museum stuff. >> Okay. Anybody? Anybody else for the board? Okay. All right. That was really nice. And just looking at all the signs and different things that are up to, all those things take time. Um, and so as a board, we just thank you so much for taking the time to convey some nice messages. So, it was very they're very thoughtful and of course we always love hearing from students. I think it's probably our favorite thing. So, um, students who came today, thank you. Good stuff. >> Do you want to segue right into your board comments or were those your comments? >> Those are my comments. >> Those are comments. >> Easy. Oh, look at that. >> All right. JB or
Tom, do either of you want to go next? >> All right. I just have a couple of things. Um, one, um, again, thank you. It's very humbling and and I'm so grateful for all of the um walking in and seeing the the lovely signs and and the thank yous and um and the creativity and like um like Erin said the thoughtfulness. I mean the book project started more than a month ago. This isn't a last minute thought and that's just amazing to me um that everybody has has taken that time. I also want to think about a little bit what a state championship means to, you know, our district. And I love that, um, you know, Keith Ross talks about building young men that become grown men and, um, hopefully really productive parts of our
society all around. But I also went to that game and I saw community that was there and brought together um from just just pride of their school, their history, uh these young men that are are working so hard towards a goal. So I think that's another real aspect of what the success of of the school football program in the last two years has brought and hopefully continues. and they'll have ups and they'll have downs, but I think that they're really building something um important and I and I think that's wonderful to see. Uh the other thing I just want to talk about is um I had the opportunity to go to curriculum night at Summer High School and um I thought I was just going to pop in and say hi and you know see
everything and I literally closed the place down. uh it was impossible to get out of there because as you go through and for those of you um who might not be familiar with curriculum night, it's an opportunity for the school to show its uh extracurricular activities. It's from sports to uh a lot of the electives that kids can um participate in to you know so many of the just core classes that were also kind of represented. And it's really the eighth graders can come in and they can have an opportunity to meet instructors. They can talk to coaches, they can talk to students. And that's the part that was so exciting. Erin mentioned it earlier how much we love hearing student voices. I couldn't get out of there because the kids that were talking about
the programs that they participated in were so inspired by what they were doing and so excited by what they were doing and sharing that information to, you know, incoming freshmen. Um, and with an old board member like me, uh, it was really fun and made you kind of there was also some really neat programs makes you want to go back and so um, I just wanted to share that. I'm hoping to make it up to Bonnie Lakes as well. Uh it's just a it's a neat opportunity to kind of see uh and talk to people that are living what we hear about from reports and what we hear about um you know during our work. So um I really felt lucky to be able to be part of that. >> Well I want to say
you know it's really good to be down here tonight. Been in my house for over two weeks from my knee surgery. come along slowly, but having all this beautiful artwork and conversation tonight just does my heart so much so good. So, it's good to be out see what's going on and I've always been part of the district happening and this and I can't wait to get back into it again. So, making progress, but I'll get there. Thank you. >> Slowly slowly. Yeah. >> Bill, any comments? >> Um, you know, it seems like it's been forever since we've been together and and things with the schools and that. Um, I was thinking about it this morning. Maybe that was a bad omen, but uh, I want to thank in advance staff central office. You guys are
going to be scrambling because we are officially in the flu season. And for those that don't know, there are times that we just don't have enough substitutes, enough people. And so, people drop what they're doing. We'll go cover buildings, do the best they can, uh, having lived through those those times. it. We are right in the midst of it and um thank all of you and thank the building folks for for what they're going to do because every day is a surprise, isn't it? >> So, thank you. >> Definitely. Awesome. All right. Well, thank you very much. Uh I would just add thank you for all of the recognition. It's great to see all the students here. David, do we have any audience comments tonight? >> Okay. All right. So, that takes us to some
more business matters. uh Bonnie Lake High School expansion schematic design and value analysis. Wayde Jensen from BC BC will present the Bonnie Lake High School expansion schematic design and value analysis to the board of directors. Welcome. >> This is Wade. [laughter] Hello. >> Do you trust me with this or you want to do this? >> I can do it advance. Okay. I think I'm okay. All right. Thank you. Okay. Should raise this a little bit here so everybody can you hear me? Can you hear me? Okay. Thank you. I'm pleased to be back. Um so today uh we are talking about the schematic design. Uh so it's an update to um the last presentation on the educational specifications and uh we have two parts. The second part is the value analysis. So with that we'll
go into the schematic design. So uh in schematic design we build on uh the building blocks that we established during the educational specifications. I'll just call them edspecs. Specifications is quite a mouthful. Um and so I've put the goals uh for the site plan uh on the left hand side. Actually all these slides have goals on them. So those are are marching orders that we established during the first phase. And then you can see on the right hand side the image of the site plan uh that's been updated. Uh so we're getting into more and more detail on the site and I guess I'm happy to report that uh we haven't really made many changes. Uh we found our initial plan was pretty good and so uh we find out more and more about uh
and get into more detail but we're still tracking uh with very similar uh plans to what you saw last time. Uh so one of the goals for the site plan of course is to improve the circulation. Uh we're doing that on 199th with the new roundabout which you can see in more detail here. Uh the design's getting flushed out. Uh and also improved uh pedestrian circulation. So you can see the sidewalk uh that goes all the way from the roundabout up to the entrance of the building. Uh we're increasing the queueing area. Uh so a whole new lane of queuing uh to keep those cars off of 199th and on the site. Uh coming from both directions, too. So, also a queuing lane that is coming from uh the back of the the building from
the pack direction. Uh and so we'll get into a little bit closer view here so you can see that new entry plaza um the new building addition there creating a welcoming entry. Uh a little more detail on how that drop off area is going to work in the front of the school. So, uh you know, we also know parking uh is very important. Uh, and so we only lost a net of four parking stalls, which is great. Uh, you'll also gain more of course when, uh, you know, the ROC program moves out of the portable into the building, so we'll get a lot more parking there. Uh, we're also making it safer. Uh, and so there will be a, a fence uh, that runs along the front of those parking stalls and very clear pedestrian
pathways across that drop off area. Uh, so everybody knows where they can walk and where they can drive and keeping those students safe. That's very important. And then also the new uh DLC drop off area which is working out really well on the lower level. So um I think I noted before there's the 14oot grade change between that entry plaza and where the buses are shown there on the left. So you can see all the ramps uh and stairs to make that an accessible route from one side to the other. So that was pretty tricky to make all those work and uh get them in without losing parking, but it's looking like it's going to be a success. So, as far as the ground floor plan is concerned, we'll go right into the the lower
level there. Those areas in green uh are the DLC classrooms. So, we've gained an additional DLC classroom for what the existing building has. Uh and each of those DLC classrooms has an expanded bathroom area. So, a roll-in shower, an adult-siz changing table, a lift uh inside those bathrooms. Uh and then there's also a quiet room in each of the spaces. So the quiet room uh can be used to calm students down depending on the program. They can also use it for therapy. They'll be space for a um a swing in there. Uh and then also the teal spaces are um the admin support spaces for um the teachers. So there's a faculty office there, that larger teal space for the DLC staff. Um it's very similar to how the other staff uh rooms work within
the building. Each of the um classroom learning communities has one of those faculty offices. So now the DLC has one as well. Uh and then there's also a meeting room. So that is uh kind of the smaller office size space. Uh that's also in teal. Um that is consistent with what we're doing in the other areas of the building too. So it can be used as an office. It can be used for small group meetings, uh, breakout spaces for students to work one-on-one with, um, an assistant. So, uh, great flexible space. Uh, and then we're also on this level taking advantage of that grade change. Uh, so there's a lot of space that we needed to kind of dig out to build a foundation down to the ground. So all those spaces in gray there,
uh we're going to use those for the mechanical room, uh electrical rooms, custodial, but then also the darker gray is storage. Uh we heard loud and clear that a lot more storage was needed in this building. So uh that space is uh one of our consultants said it was free space, not quite completely free, but we do have to excavate anyway. So um let's put it to use uh for some storage. And then uh the purple area there uh is in the existing building envelope. That's the stage uh which of course we don't need anymore now that you have the pack there. Uh so that area gets taken over for the um junior ROC program. Uh they have the classroom, changing rooms, a storage room, and then an office that can look into all those
spaces and monitor what's going on. So great space for that program. Uh moving up to the second floor. Uh so the classroom stack above the DLC. So we know classrooms are a priority. Uh so we have um kind of on the bottom of the screen there is one of those learning communities which is patterned after the existing ones in uh Bonnie Lake High School also similar to what's in the new Sumar High School. So keeping that equity uh amongst the spaces in the district. Uh so in those communities there are four typical classrooms which are the uh kind of the lighter orange color. Uh the salmon we'll call it salmon is the science lab. So each one has a science lab, a new prep room, uh one of those teal meeting rooms uh that's a
flexible space and then also a faculty uh office which is um also teal closer to the right hand side of that um learning community. Uh so the big goal we know is to create a new welcoming entrance. So our welcome center is getting more and more developed as the community focal point uh of the building and that entrance space. So that can be seen in the dark blue uh there in this image. And then it's flanked by the new uh main administration area. Uh we're also consolidating a lot of that office administration space. So uh the career center moved up into that green space. uh which is a new floor plate where the stage opening used to be. Um so that moves them close to the front of the building, which is great for when
they need to meet with um families that come in to meet with those counselors. Uh okay. And then we'll go up to the third floor. So again, we're going up uh so we can keep that site space ready for parking and circulation. Uh so this learning community, very similar, pretty much the exact replica of what's on the floor below. Uh but we were able to gain a few more classrooms up on this level. So another science room and two more general classrooms uh that have a smaller um kind of flex area between them that overlooks uh the welcome center which is double height. So the the big result uh we're still at 18 added learning spaces which is great. I think you know the bond was for 10 to 12. So we're really excited that
that has stayed in the program. And then um the building renovation. So there are still you know we're shuffling around the um spaces that got vacated by uh the programs that moved into the other new areas of the building. Uh and then expanding a few spaces. So we talked about um the ROC on the ground floor there on the left. Uh the leadership uh classroom is the lighter purple. Uh it moved into the space that used to house the career center. Uh, and so it's right off the commons with a sliding door which will be great for the students to be able to sell tickets during lunchtime and kind of get the word out about their events. Um, the robotics lab uh also on the ground floor gets expanded. That's the kind of pinkish area.
So, we're taking over one of the physics labs to make that program space larger. Uh, and then uh some of the pack storage moves into that area as well. that was up in the catwalk of the stage before. And then you could see on the second floor, the three uh rooms that used to house the DLC uh classrooms are turned back into general classrooms. So those are those three orange ones that are kind of all together. Uh and then the student services area in the existing admin space um gets consolidated and just reconfigured. Very minor changes there. Uh but we are able to add two more classrooms within that existing uh admin space. So that's great. Uh and then you can see the career center next to that. So uh this is our rendering of
the welcome center. So we're doing our best to make it a big welcoming statement uh for the school. Uh we've used a lot of wood tone on there to make it very warm and some natural looking materials. Uh we're also adding um the metal sighting uh you can see on there matches uh what's on the existing building and so does the brick. So we're tying it to uh the existing building to complement it um so that they work together. Uh and then also we have what we call our bat symbol was actually a cat symbol but like a bat symbol. So that's on that stair tower. Um the Bonnie Lake High School panther there um which will act as a beacon uh at the end of the day and light up at night. So and
that's the end of the schematic design update. So I don't know if there's any questions before we move on to our e >> any questions >> value? No questions so far. >> All right, great question so far. >> Thank you. [laughter] Okay, so moving on to the value analysis study. Um, we're kind of tying these together because we used the schematic design documents uh for the value analysis. So, um, this is the definition. I I know you've probably seen this many times, so I won't read it to you. Um, but we basically, you know, it's a it's an it's a review to optimize cost and performance. So, we're not necessarily looking at the lowest cost. Um, we want the best value. And so um the study goals uh will vary from um study to study.
So main analysis was the third party that did this study for us. Um so they worked with um our design team as well as the school district to come up with the goals that are particular to this building. Uh a lot of them have to do with you know our guiding principles and our ed specs. And so we went through a whole process to kind of decide and figure out what those were and then they ranked them. So they're listed below. And number one was aesthetics, right? Our new welcoming entry. So again, that, you know, that's coming to the forefront in every everything we do. Uh and then also looking at the budget. Of course, budget is very important. We want to make sure we're meeting that. Uh and then a lot of these have
to do with sort of durable, maintainable buildings, which I think speaks to your district and what you want in quality buildings that last for a long time. So very good goals here. Uh so they provided a series of recommendations for us. These are their top 12. Uh and so they run the gamut of all the different um you know disciplines within the building. So we have C for civil, S for structural and so on. Um these were their uh bigger ticket items. Um and so you'll notice in the left hand column the current cost. Um that was the cost from our SD estimate and then their proposal cost and then the difference. So, I guess the one thing uh to note about this is when they show a negative number, that's actually a [laughter] a
net add to the project, not a net savings. So, that always confuses me. You kind of have to think about it backwards. Um, so at the end, they have 3.5 million of possible savings uh in this. And then the other thing to not the LCCA uh life cycle cost analysis. So some of the items uh mostly the mechanical items those uh the the change change in cost over time. So the initial savings you know for M1 was uh 200,000 over time you'll get more savings from that um because of the efficiency of the systems um and it was to add you know more insulation and downsize the um mechanical system. And then we went through a process with the design team in the school district after we get these recommendations. We vet them. So we
talk about them sometimes two or three times and before we come to an agreement. Um and so you'll see in the report we've got columns where we've either accepted, rejected, modified or I like to add maybe because sometimes [laughter] you just need to have a little more investigation done on those items. uh before you can accept them. And some of those may are of course still going on. Um so uh that's you'll you'll see that in the report. Uh for each one, you know, we we've written out our comments and discussion um why we rejected or why we accepted it and the the end result here. So these are this is a breakdown of the bond project budget, right? So that's the overall project uh that was in the bond document, $70 million. the project
uh maximum allowable con construction cost the MAC uh 46.9 million and that is for the high school itself. Um there's also an off-site MAC which is certainly under the umbrella of the project but the offsite was not part of the study. Um so that was 6.4 million our schematic design estimate came in at 44 million. So, we're still we were still a little bit under um our MAC, which is always great news. And then I do have a a slight change. So, you know, things are moving fast in [laughter] our design world. And we put this presentation together uh before we had another meeting and made some more decisions. And so, so the let me read the actual numbers uh to you. So, uh, the ones in the report, uh, the proposed savings, uh, from
the analysis was $46,000. So, we went from in this slide, we had a net ad actually to a net savings of the the items that we accepted. And then, uh, the proposed savings that are listed on the slide, those are from my maybe column. So, [laughter] so we made some more decisions. Uh, one of those uh that was the $2 million decision was actually rebuilding the existing um chillers and trying to reuse them and they are um you know they were original to the building and we found out we couldn't get a warranty and so that one got rejected. So the final um proposed added value items that are still under consideration are $214,000. So Oh, I'm turning my page but not the slide. Okay. So uh what is the role of the schoolboard in
all of this?
