lot going on uh lately in the last few weeks and the last month so I won't try to steal all the Thunder from the things that I know people have been attending um I want to be give a huge uh shout out and thanks to the members of the capital facilities district and guide the district with a suggestion of what we need to do with all of our buildings so that's been really great to see them working on that um I was was fortunate enough to attend the Bonnie Lake uh robotics competition up at Bonnie Lake High School this weekend and as it always does it it absolutely amazes me um at the level ASM and the support that not only the other teams give but the staff and everybody to put that event on
is is really amazing so thank you thanks Kevin Deb do you have any comments okay all right um I guess you want me to go or you wanna okay um I guess just to tag off of what um Kevin said um yes a huge shout out thank you to the people who have been um involved for over a year in the capital facilities team there's really great work going on and it's been a pleasure to sit and just listen to um thoughtful questions and um some uh very very tough topics um and and I just appreciate their time and their energy and it's very clear that they have um not taken this lightly um and it's been a pleasure to um listen to some of those conversations um in addition to that I to into
the rep robotics um this weekend that was high on my list um if you want to hear kids passionate about something go and talk to kids because Gavin and Tate talked to me for about 35 minutes and I don't know if they took a breath the entire time they were so passionate and excited about telling me all the ins and outs and I couldn't repeat it if you if I tried of this complex competition that basically started what six months ago they get a plan and then they implement it and they put things together and then they compete and then the the gym the bonc high school turns into this amazing course where there's people cheering and chanting and there's a DJ and music and it's phenomenal it is um such a cool event and
it's districts from all over the state there's Bainbridge Island there I mean everyone it was just the coolest thing to see kids in excited about learning and spending their Saturday um really achieving and doing something that they love so that was a highlight for me as well so I'll pause there bill bill um so I want to thank Dave cuts and his crew and huge shout out to the parents spring Sports have started and all the fields all the everything they had to get ready um having coached spring Sports I'm looking over at Cassie as a fellow coach um to have a Spring sport though that you didn't have the first day in snow was kind of a cool thing but lots of kids out lots of kids enjoying it and I really appreciate everybody
who got things ready for them and then this morning uh Paul and I were able to attend the parent leadership meeting today and and uh Chief Parkinson from East County East Pierce County uh presented on the the uh fire Levy and um gave us some great information on that and then listening to the PTO parents it is just so amazing the level of how much they put into it is just phenomenal all the activities to involve parents and their kids so um hopefully Paul can add to that more articulately than I did but it was it was just so great to hear all the things they doing bill you did a great job I don't know if I could add a whole lot the parent leadership conference or Council uh I always enjoy going to
it because again it's like a walk down memory lane and these organizations and groups are important because they plug the parents in at a very early age and get them excited they get the kids excited too about learning and that carries over all the way through high school as parents start to pull back uh they still end up with that good feeling uh about the district some of the things that were going on that was shared they're having Pacific Science Center coming in some of the schools have already had this program uh brought in um and some are geing up to bring it in um let's see family movie night uh where they're collecting food for the food bank um let's see Victor Falls Elementary raised $113,000 from their fun fundraiser and uh they also
are getting set oh I'm sorry that was Donald eisan now is doing their fundraiser on May 3rd so you want to mark your calendar they're having an art night walk and then that's about all I really caught on they they do have a lot going on so check out their Facebooks their websites um hopefully they'll send us invitations so that we can remember as well but there is a lot going on I also noticed that they changed it instead of donuts with dads or donuts with moms or donuts with grandparents it's donuts with grown-ups and I yeah very very so I like that too anyway back to you Aon thank you I love that donuts with grownups sounds cool too all right thank you good things happening for sure thank you for the updates okay
now we'll go back do we have some superintendent comments by chance well come on up be quiet Deb Norris will you please join us in the front I would be too whoa wow I I'm not I I'm almost a little speechless there um tonight we are giving Deb Norris a superhero sendoff uh because she is um not only Robin can I take this out can I I can take this out yes uh not only is she an incredible superhero she is one of the like original superheroes of this District but I'm going to need a little help so Kelly Den could you please help me uh tonight when we honor our uh resident superhero Deb Norris and Deb you're gonna probably need to stand over here so that people can get the full picture of
this superhero look at [Laughter] you it's in the back all right well without delay let's get this party started give you a little countdown here ready five 4 3 2 one here we go D I actually I I was gonna say this looks pretty good and I don't know if you ever had a TV like that but uh oh yeah did anybody else have a TV like that anybody else have like like the record player in the TV with the speaker uhhuh okay well so um Deb this is kind of like this your this is your life as the Wonder Woman of the semar Bonnie Lake School District I know it's kind of like a it's like a fun theme song right well that looks really doesn't it I know I was thinking um so
Deb Norris tonight we celebrate you and we celebrate um many many years of being a Schoolboard member 13 somewhere around there at least 30 plus probably years of volunteering in this uh in this school district and tonight um we're here with you your family's here with you Spider-Man Spider-Man over there the mask is there um nah you know she creates a policy so uh all she's got to do is fix it but um tonight we celebrate your legacy and we celebrate the impact that you have made on thousands of students and an entire I mean an entire School District multiple communities um you are not only well respected you are well-loved so tonight we're having fun so that we don't cry uh when you right can't right um when you leave and vacate your position
because you are uh you are the heart and soul of this district and we love you very much but tonight we want to celebrate have some laughs have some fun and um and enjoy our our last board meeting which could have been eventful but so Deb Norris whoops let's go back okay my okay these gloves I can't text I can't wait I'm just gonna slightly like I now I know what Spider-Man does feel like one more can you oh there we go okay all right yeah I mean I really like I can't text with these and I didn't really think about using the restroom either because like right that's very complicated so Deb we got to start with the costume first right so you have on right now obviously a Wonder Woman dress right Stars
blue red right every school board member also wears a a costume every time they come into this boardroom right you come in with Integrity with character with compassion every person that comes in here is treated with respect and your costume always says you're welcome uh we you know you belong here we uh accept you you have never um been disrespectful you've never been um Angry it's just amazing to see that when you Dawn your costume of a school Schoolboard member uh even in the most of like challenging of times um you have been um graceful compassionate uh empathetic and everything that you would expect from a Wonder Woman School board member Mr Brower first you need your cape of Courage so Miss Kelly Den because your costume is not complete right well let me tell
you it takes a lot of courage to be a Schoolboard member nowadays right it is like not a walk in the park by any means and if Deb um hasn't shown courage I don't know what she has because when you sit up there on the dis and you listen to what's going on um and you lead an entire School District through a pandemic through a name change through opening buildings uh you name it what you do constantly takes courage and we've seen that time and time again when you have your costume on as a Schoolboard member full of Integrity you wear your cape of courage and you sit in your seat and you make tough decisions um it takes a a lot of courage to make some of the decisions that we make but if
you know Deb Norris what you know about her is that her decisions are always made with the best interest of every child um she truly cares about the kids in this district and you feel her heart you feel her uh energy when when she's making these tough decisions and it's not easy um but the courage that she has shown continually um is inspiring it gives us A Renewed Energy but Deb you you made some courageous decisions in this district and um and we appreciate and thank you for it so your costume your cape of courage and next your lasso of Truth okay so we're getting there right like okay the lasto is a little um well yeah kind of had to put that together but you know you can you know take it out and
lasso people uh but if you know Deb uh honesty is probably one of her biggest character uh character traits that we love about her she's truthful um again just a person of such great character and integrity but her truth comes out in such a respectful way she um she listens with great empathy that she communicates the truth in honesty and in love um man her servant heart just beams but it's all done with the lasso of truth and you seek the truth you seek um to understand when things are tough um to make courageous decisions with your cape uh but Deb truly when you um sitting next to you on the dis and being with you for the the last eight years has just been um an honor to see you and how you work
um so that last of of Truth is it's the real deal ah the wristbands of strength yep now you have your wristbands on um these wristbands come in handy um and Kelly D I might have to give this to you real quick superheroes have allergies I'm G give one second okay am talking yeah wristband of strength oh wristbands of [Laughter] strength yeah so Deb I think everyone here knows um how strong you've been um through the ups the Downs the challenges the you know the the successes of our district and it doesn't matter the day the you know the year as the year goes long like you've always just you're just standing there strong representing everything that our community just loves and and and just wants and you're you're always there so couldn't say more
about that right the golden Tiara okay so here here's the Tiara oh sure yes okay yes um maybe gently G don't know how tight it'll be isang still there looks good okay looks good looks good all right okay so the golden Tiara so I always think about the Tiara for the people who just have like those values right you're standing for truth like you're there no matter what and and like I just look at you over the years and just how much you've supported no matter no matter what it is and it's just it's such an honor just to stand her and recognize you and again it's like Aaron it's the tears right it's like oh my goodness this this era is kind of ending and so it's but I just think about you and
your legacy and what you've done and just that that Crown will just like always be there Shining bright for all of us so the golden Tiara yes all right so Dr Den to you I know it's like deep breath golden trf leadership I love it okay so how's the outfit coming all right you're looking good not bad right rans of strength lasso of Truth something is still missing H so what do we got next oh oh come on up so and what's so funny is that we didn't plan this but if you know the Norris family they dress up in costumes all the time right well so just like you know Wonder Woman has her iconic partnership with Superman we know that behind every School Board member is a good partner a good spouse at
home mark you have uh put up with long nights many phone calls all sorts of issues um and we thank you for taking care of her so that she can take care of us so thank you for your partnership um you know you're little love birds right like Superman and Wonder Woman They just go together it's just uh such a great little great little partnership there well so in essence really this is our Deb Norris right a woman of complete courage compassion dedication uh we were just talking that there are very few people that can make the type of impact that Deb has made in this district and you feel her um you feel her Legacy wherever you go if you have ever been at a school that's been in crisis or has been having
a challenge oh you know like the next day or the day after there's Deb Norris delivering cookies Cassie's like yep and nothing feels better than seeing Deb come in and she does it so quietly so gracefully uh and the cookies are like gone in two seconds because everybody knows it um but she just has this way of healing people and she has this way of sending a message that says you're cared for you're valued we see you um we feel your pain and she just makes it better and to be able to be all three of these and a superhero uh that's takes a pretty special person and Deb Norse that's exactly who you are but there's a couple more things so if you notice um the the first Wonder Woman kind of like some
people look thought that was like a little bobblehead you know um the the W was actually the symbol of a heart um because switch spots with you Deb has always been the heart of this District always and Deb what this is uh this is actually a gift from I know I do too uh it's from a first first grade class at Victor fall Falls and they each made a heart and the each one of those hearts de it really does represent the work you've done um in this District over many many years but this is our symbolic way of thanking you for being the heart of this District I mean you are the original superhero you are the original Wonder Woman um but you are very much the heart of why why we do what
we do here I mean from the First Community dinner at sum Junior High right to now um what it is massive event um we appreciate that from you but it's your heart that has taught us all so many valuable lessons that it's an honor to continue that Legacy um but thank you for being that person that has shown your heart to us well we're not done yet so cheers to Deb Norris your legacy your influence your extraordinary superpower they're drinking Kool-Aid that's why koola's popping up uh on the bottom but Deb you are truly a special person and a very special superhero and you look good now you got all your stuff on but I'm not the only one that thinks that that um there are some people that uh would also like to say
a few nice words about you that you've influenced and impacted and one of them is Mary herback so Mary you want to come on up Mary's like Edna Mode oh you totally can but you have to use the microphone I just want to express a few thoughts for your many years of service as suar Bon Lake School District as a board member your years of Devotion to the district made a difference you were committed to evaluating and determining the best path for the district to provide the resources necessary to support educational school-based skills physical and mental health programs to serve the whole student and the family because you understood the challenges you also understood the importance of a strong School leadership in the community as well and all those elements guided this school district the
responsibility you were given as an elected official was not taken lightly it has been a pleasure and an honor to know you personally and to assist you as a board member of the school district thank you for Mary herbach to come out that's like big time right yeah no kidding um would any of our board members like to say something first yeah as you see I'm not the kind of guy that usually dresses up like this but for you I I did put something on so it would only be for you Deb and so uh from the moment I got elected and got on here that first meeting you had with me I could tell right away you listened uh you always made me feel heard and cared about and I think that's a theme
you'll hear all the way down the line here so thank you Deb and good luck in the future so Deb I'm conflicted because when I said yes back last spring I thought I'd have like four years with you this feels like I'm just yeah I gota tell you what can I say I think it was bait and switch um I think of all the times Deb used to stop by and somehow we would just wander out in front of su high school and talk for long long periods of time and uh you really helped me understand that I could be a principal of heart so that was really cool um also I youed shared your daughters with me and that was so amazing although I don't think I saw the Spider-Man I don't must not
have been one of those but uh you know they brought the leadership that you had taught them to our school and just made suar High School a better place as you have the district so thank you so much okay well I wrote things down but I couldn't get through it reading it on my own so I left it at home thinking that I'm just gonna speak from my heart and maybe I won't cry we'll see how this goes um I started thinking though it was probably 11 or 12 years ago and I got a phone call from you and we had never met before we were the only ones running for our positions for um Schoolboard and we really truly probably had no idea what we were in for um but we met at Starbucks
and what um was supposed to be kind of a quick little meet and greet ended up being um a wonderful multiple hour conversation um at that moment I expected to serve alongside of you as a board member um I expected to problem solve with you and make decisions with you um I expected to collaborate and um team with you what I didn't expect was having you as a mentor and as a friend and supporting the last 10 years when I think about 10 years ago you know my kids were nine nine 10 and 12 and A lot's changed since then we've been through lots of shared moments in life um we've rejoiced in your marriages and your births of your children and your grandchildren and it's been an absolute honor and joy to serve alongside
you as a board member but also the unexpected joys of just being your friend and you will forever have a special place in my heart thank you for all that you are and all that you give we are better for you in our life you're crying I'm not crying you're crying um I I've learned a lot from Deb she's taught me patience wisdom and probably the biggest lesson of what I've done as a PTA member or a booster member you now a board member that I didn't realize until I met Deb which is we do this not for the kids that we have in the district right now but the kids and the parents that come behind us everything we do has an impact now but has a greater impact down the road and every
step of the way I've uh that I've been involved in the district that I'm deliberately not looking at you right now Deb because I won't make it um it's your influence and the things that you've done that then I got to be a part of not realizing that it was you that pave the way for what I was able to parti IPA in so can't say thank you enough and I appreciate you very much any of you want to say anything to Mom we are pretty impressed by how you've given so much to the community and the effect that you've had on the community and dedication and uh it's been interesting to watch so we're kind of glad you're going off though um so first of all we just wanted to thank you all for
uh letting us be a part of this really beautiful Sund off um we're we're lucky to be here um but to our dear Mother um we've learned so much from you about servant leadership um about how to conduct oneself how to give back to your community and um you've the way that you've worked with within the suar community area you've transformed it for the better and we are so grateful for that leadership and for what you've taught us along the way uh raise your hand if you've ever had a really difficult conversation with another person anyone did you ever think of Debbie Norris when you were having that conversation I call it being Debbie norest uh when I go into a difficult conversation and I get through it and there's a compromise and everybody wins
but especially other people thank you as the youngest I'm going to tail it here with what they already said um I think you know between Rachel and Sarah and I our passion for Community engagement and Civic engagement comes from you so we're very grateful for your leadership I'm also the most emotional um so thank you for that and as Sarah mentioned too um and it's been it's been said throughout the course of this evening so far the word great um you are Grace um and we all have learned that from you and we all make I think the interactions throughout our day um thinking about Grace and and and kind of leading with how you'd handle a situation so anyways too emotional I'm done thank you okay oh all right we have oh your majesty
I can never say no to barbetto she's like oh Lori yes like yes way okay I'm just going to leave you to alone for a second well for the last uh over 35 years um I've been a partner with Debbie because she and I grew up I think a lot through the ptaa program and a week ago or like 33 years and a week prior we were at Sarah's uh concert at at Maple laon there was a very pregnant mother waiting for Hillary and uh just The Memories We have had and I've followed you into public office you know I did I never imagined that I would be an elected official but you kind of showed the way and I you know am still in there but it is challenging but um the school district
really has they not only um make students shine but they also help the adults as well and I just am proud to be your friend and just you know we we can always remember the cultural Fair where she was left with the bag Pipers and people 800 people showed up and there she was so anyway but congratulations and Barbara is also um Hillary's godmother and I just wanted to also just throw this out there is that when it was time for us to choose our god parents for our children they were all School y teachers with the exception of you and you city council person and really proud of that there's a reason okay we we have one more thing and then Deb I don't know if you want to say a few words um
but we have some great food in the back take a quick break grab a snack one last yep so Deb Norris a nice plaque because you know it's got to have a plaque right uh in grateful appreciation for your years of service your vision your leadership dedication have guided us through challenges and triumphs alike and enriching the lives of countless students and families with deep respect and profound gratitude we acknowledge your remarkable contributions to the sum Bonnie Lake School District and its Community Deb Norris congratulations we will miss [Applause] you and thanks for letting me dress like Captain Marvel e hopefully I get through with this I believe this is what makes a good strong Schoolboard member you must come with open eyes and open mind and mostly an important heart for over 37 years
of volunteering in this District I have witnessed much change in pivoting due to outside forces strong new data and new trends but the one thing that has not changed is the unwavering dedication of those who work hard to support our kids each and every day whether it's handing out free breakfast free lunch or weekend backpacks so kids could eat over the weekend having a Community Drive for socks and shoes and personal items even including diapers holiday dinners and the big give food drives adopting students for winter wishes or benefit night this district has a big heart these last 10 years have been kind come with some challenges as laui mentioned I took the role as president during the covid years with masks and distancing remotely conducting the meetings from my home office which is really
Hillary's Nursery with a 48 star flag in the background which is Mark's father's flag and as difficult as that was it could never ever outweigh all the positive and memorable times I've experienced not just with this board but with the entire District Paul the first time I met with you our coffee date lasted four hours and those early days might have even included a few times in Lifesavers but you come with an analytical mind and an approach a little bit different than mine but I value your willingness to fully understanding subject and I'll miss those chats Kevin our Wordsmith you have such a big heart you're drived to have the board be more inclusive and helped craft policy as such was the right thing to do you bring a fresh perspective and an important one
which also brings a really good balance to the board Bill although we haven't served together on the board that long I have known you for about 27 years Hillary was maybe five or six then that was a while back you are a calm kind empathetic introspective leader with a strong history in our community and we're lucky to have you and this is actually to Casey Chamberlain and Rick Hendricks if you are listening thank you for your encouragement along the way and I just have two words to say about that remember Spokan and Nashville oh Aon my wingman and cherished friend you have a gift a natural ability to always see the right thing with great heart strong and compassionate with a very quick with you are a graceful leader and the best board president this
district has seen hands down Dr Dent our real superhero Lori as The Story Goes I observed you from a are didn't really know you but I watched you in your amazing leadership skills when asked you quickly stepped into the role of superintendent when we needed you the most those are hard times you swiftly finished your PhD studies hired the very best candidates or your cabinet while setting a course calendar that leads this District even to today thank you for your good humor your theme days which I did not know about this I know I should have guessed and you made this work fun I feel our greatest achievement was in hiring you absolutely and for those of you that know that while I was President I always started off the meeting with a quote so
here's one last quote from AA Mill how lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard thank you okay thank I'm not even going to try but what I am going to do is we're going to go ahead and break um I've heard that there are some refreshments um we're GNA let you connect with your loved ones and just soak up this moment for a minute and we'll resume the meeting at 7M and we will go ahead and resume our meeting with audience comments David Brower well thank you for your patience um the board recognizes the value of public comment on education issues and the importance of involving members of the public in its meetings comments from the public are taken into board advisement and may or may not receive action at
a future meeting topics including charges or complaints against employees employment or dismissal of personnel acquisition of real estate lawyer client relationships campaigning and parameters for negotiations should not be discussed in audience comments other information questions or problems can usually be addressed by District staff the audience comment period will end when all registered speakers have been heard we ask that everyone at hear and understand the following guidelines in order to maintain respect for all points of view the school board requests no clapping booing or any other form of support or non-support be used the board will not respond to comments but we'll take them under advisement speakers should be courteous and professional refrain from using profanity vulgar language threatening or defamatory comments as a reminder individuals are not permitted to name a specific staff member board
member or student during public comments failure to do so may result in the board president or designate interrupting or ending the comment the audience comment process is as follows only speakers who registered by noon on Tuesday March 19th will be heard if you're providing in-person public comment when your name is called please come up to the podium and state your name please address the comments to the school board as a whole individuals have three minutes to speak the assistant superintendent will signal when one minute remains our first audience comment this evening is Steve McCoy hi my name is Steve McCoy congratulations on your service thank you I can't name your name um I wanted to speak to you a little bit about respect because I know it's a a value to the school and what
you do and what you try to accomplish here um I want to start by saying I have a friend who was given an honorary degree as a doctor he didn't earn it it was given to him it's just an honorarium he didn't go through all the requirements to achieve it it was just given to him my the principle is that when we're giving something it doesn't mean as much as when we earn it when we work for it when we achieve it the standards the higher the standards the more the accomplishment is when we when we meet that achievement so the diversity in equity and inclusion that I see being embraced by a number of places all over including the schools including Boeing to me takes away that achievement that we have as uh from
the the efforts that we make you can see how it's affecting Boeing because they got Parts falling off their airplanes so my concern is for the kids because all of you are here to serve the kids trying to improve them so what I see in diversity and Equity inclusion is we give people things that they didn't earn that there are achievements and so the lower the standards the lowerer the self-respect the higher the standards the greater the achievement I tell my grandkids do the hard things because the easy things aren't worth doing so when we look when I look at the measurement system of the school system here from the superintendent of public instructions website it seems to me that about just over 50% of the students are achieving the math standards and the science
standards and just a little bit more than that on the English language and arts so seems like we have some room to improve so my comment and the principle is make it hard make it things that they can achieve don't give them things under the diversity equity and inclusion policies because it it takes away their self-respect they lose their dignity that's all thank you our next public comment is Teresa mcclimens not here okay our next public comment is Donna orav my name is Donna aravis a grandparent of four children in the suer school district one in elementary one in junior high and two in high school this is so difficult for me to come before you especially after honoring Deb Norris I'm saying her name who I found to be gracious and kind as she
met with me for for many hours discussing my concerns at one time and I thank you so that makes this really difficult now to discuss what I need to I and many concerned parents have come before you for several years presenting facts and scientific evidence of the harm of gender and sex ideology CRT and Dei harm physically mentally and scholastically to our children our government federal and state are schizophrenic on these issues issues our state Constitution prohibits teaching of ideology in public schools citizens fought the good fight in the parental rights initiative 20181 which just became law however the legislature just passed Senate bill 5462 which will require curriculum approved by the state that incorporates these ideologies including Dei taking your rights as a school board to select the best curricul curriculum they're taking that
right away from you school districts are beginning to be sued over harm done to Children private companies are being sued by their stockholders over Dei culture resulting in lower standards for employees resulting in lower success for their companies the standards for medical schools are lower due to Dei the Washington state supreme court just two days ago approved two new licensing Pathways for law school graduates without taking the bar exam another result of Dei I am not going to present any more facts or studies regarding these harmful ideologies you know them I asking you to stand up and stop this you will have to fight the state you may have to fight amongst yourselves the teachers unions administrators you may even have to fight some parents yet here is the warning as we speak children K
through 12 are being harmed emotionally physically and scholastically you can not let this go on any longer knowing what you know and be responsible for more children being harmed you will need to go to the biology teacher and school nurse that spoke up last year at a board meeting celebrating this ideology and tell them to stop are you willing to take a stand and do what is right thank you our next audience comment is Terry McCoy it never ceases to amaze what I learn at these meetings um and if there's something that I have learned over the past couple years is not to be surprised so you guys did a good job tonight good evening Dr Dan and School District directors hi my name is Terry McCoy last week I attended the study session and
I appreciated learning about some of the district's Safety and Security Programs for K through2 in the case of emergency preparedness the district seems to be working diligently to provide a comprehensive response plan depending on the event and the corresponding needed Personnel like law enforcement Etc I do have some questions and Curiosities but I'll save those for another day more and more parents grandparents and other members of the community are asking what in the world is happening to Children during school hours why are mental health problems becoming so common why the continued decline in academics and why the rise in student absentee rates is theal curriculum and supplemental material for character development actually teaching respect for diverse beliefs or is it leaving children confused and anxious is it possible some of theal curriculum causes conflict between
what is being taught by parents at home and what is being taught at school how does Dei teach inalienable rights for all students with equality and equal protection for all students do de EI Foster dependence or Independence and if it's dependence dependence on who or what what form of measurement is the district using to prove the academic value of Dei are students learning critical thinking skills with CRT or are they being taught what to think and to think certain ways in direct opposition to being an independent critical thinker areal CRT and Dei possibly the source of increasing mental health issues areal CRT and Dei ideologies becoming the focus instead of academics the more I learn about seal CRT and Dei the more concerned I am for children and parents is the use ofal CRT and
Dei in our district possibly causing destabilization in families aren't CRT and Dei politically polarizing ideologies in direct opposition to our country's message of inalienable rights for all students freedom of speech and freedom of conscience it matters to me that all students succeed with their own individual gifts talents with strengths and weaknesses and I believe it matters to you also as promised in the pledge to know value and support every student helping them graduate ready to pursue a promising future thank you thank you that concludes our audience comments for this evening all right thank you that brings us to policy matters The District administration recommends that the board adopt the following District policies uh 2410 and 2413 do I have a motion to approve those two policies so move do I hear a second any discussion

we do now have a presentation from Child Nutrition I'm Charlotte marrison welcome we're glad you're here to give us an update on the program thank you it's nice to be back okay so I'm just going to give you a little update about our department things that have been going on things to look forward to um and I'm specifically highlighting my staff because um it's an incredible group of people who really uh do their part to know value and support our kids every day so our relationship to the Strategic plan goal number two uh our students need to be nurtured engaged and empowered uh by feeding them um they're uh ready to learn and go on with their day so our programs are federally funded and administered through the US Department of Agri culture uh via
OPI Child Nutrition we're running the national school lunch program School breakfast program the summer food service program we have again at daffodil this summer and we just started a small after school snack program at daffodil um to help with one of the clubs in relation to District policy most of uh what we do falls under policy 6700 the nutrition health and physical fitness policy which we just updated last no November um and it covers School Meal programs physical ad nutrition ad and um and everything related to food so our free reduced information that's been a uh a big deal this year um because of the um house build 1238 that passed a year or so ago that enabled us to feed kids for free at schools who were at 40% % or more free and
reduced so for this school year we've been able to feed all the kids at daffodil Valley Elementary in grades 1 through five and all at Liberty Ridge in all grades for free for breakfast and lunch as of October 31st of 20123 uh they lowered the threshold to 30% so in the coming year we will have six elementary schools that will be able to feed all the kids free breakfast and lunch so in addition to those schools we we also have maple laon Crestwood uh ELC and uh Bonnie Lake Elementary so that will be h a big assistance to our families and uh it's been a great success at the two schools and we had a lot of help getting schools up to the 30% you can see uh in particular Maple laon they were they
were really on the bubble and we were days away from hitting o October 31st and the family center help the school help and we pushed them up over the 30% our ongoing challenge is to keep those numbers up because it's a continuing process every year we have to hit 30% so um we're looking forward to that and increasing the number of uh students who can access free meals at our schools there were two bills that uh were in session in the Washington State Legislature this year to have free meals for all students but neither one of those made it out of committee so in talking about that just for what it takes for a family to qualify a family has to make a family four has to make less than 55,500 um to qualify for
meal benefits and the issue we have is that our cost of living is so high and yet the the poverty level is a federal standard so the only states that they do uh they look at the cost of living is Alaska and Hawaii so for our families um we have a lot that are struggling I have talked to countless parents who they don't qualify they don't qualify for any benefits and they can't afford to feed their kids um so it it's a real struggle this year so again those other four schools will be a help but we just need to continue to push to look for ways um to support our families so in looking at our participation I've been here five years I started right before the pandemic and so kind of on a
little bell curve here um so that was interesting to look just from September through January at the last five years because the first year it was normal operation before the pandemic and then the next year we went to grab and go at curbside when the schools were closed and of course our breakfast participation shot up then the next year we were back in school but kids were able to eat free at all schools and the numbers went up again last year in 2223 we returned to just normal operation and of course there was a big drop in participation and this year with the two schools um having the free breakfast the numbers are climbing and really they're climbing in all the elementary schools I think the pandemic really helped to normal noriz breakfast at school
um and so I think that will be a continuing Trend lunch is similar um but you can see in 2019 and this year are almost identical as far as lunch participation um lunch dipped during the pandemic just because every kid was getting a bag with breakfast and lunch so um just the way the numbers worked out and of course we were feeding a lot of kids when meals were free for all um we dipped again last year parents really were you know last year just not sure whether they should be uh having their kids eat at school or not this year they want their kids to eat at school a lot of them do struggle to pay um but the numbers are up this year this is our budget um Revenue 3.5 million expenditures 3.5
million uh we're pretty much on target to hit these numbers this year we have received um a good chunk of money uh for supply chain assistance and it we have to use it up this year uh but that really has helped our budget we're able to spend that money on fresh produce and dairy goods and other um minimally processed foods so that's been a good help to our budget but we're in good shape this year so again I wanted to highlight our staff right now we have 47 kitchen staff we have two on long-term leave our two office staff are one driver that uh we share with the warehouse we have three open positions and seven substitutes so and then I nail down uh because I was really concerned at the beginning of the year
because our staff was getting older and we didn't have that many new staff but we've had some really great hires this year so you can see we have a lot of Staff who are at the 20 years or even the 10 years uh but we also have um some good new hires and and some good people coming in so our staff we are all kitchen ladies but um Lunch Ladies um but we do have Professional Standards that we have to adhere to all of our kitchen managers uh per their uh labor contract have to maintain level one certification with the school nutrition Association uh which is eight hours of food safety training and 8 hours of nutrition training to get that certification and then ongoing uh credits that they have to maintain we do have
seven staff members who have achieved an even higher level of certification and then all our staff for our federal guidelines have to have at least four hours most of them have to have eight to 10 hours of continuing education every year so then I just went around and took pictures of my staff um to get them where the short hour staff are there is pretty much right in the middle of lunch they're all sweaty and red face but they gamely stood there and let me take their picture um so this is some of our Elementary staff um Courtney's one of our one of our great new hires at Liberty Ridge um those other managers have been here a long time we do have some sub sprinkled in because of some absences uh but Subs are
an important part of our operation and we you know we do it appreciate them um we've got our two office gals and Penny our our amazing driver uh who makes sure everything gets where it needs to go every day we've got a great crew our middle schools are all solid with four people and um we've got uh tamoko great a great new manager up at Crestwood this year um we have a good diversity of crew um we've got um s from laa who work for us before went back and now she's she's back again and um uh just a great group of gals who are are very happy to be where they're at they love their jobs they love the kids and they love the district couple of our other middle schools with their Crews
and they're all just happy gol lucky and and then we've got our high schools who have big Crews a lot of people coming and going and and uh the GS at sunar high truly love their new kitchen and they do some amazing things over there yeah our staff they know the kids they value the kids and they support those kids every single day so what's working well we did get the supply chain assistance funds this year that's helped us a lot um also Washington state was one of 35 states that did opt in for the summer EBT program so all of our students who receive uh free and reduced meal benefits we'll get $120 um in an EBT card to buy food in the summer so that's a great program our ongoing focus is to
continue Outreach to make sure we keep those schools at the 30% Target other schools that might be able to hit that Target um coaching and training kitchen staff to move into longer hour position and take over for some of our staff who's getting close to retirement and then monitor our food cost because things will be tighter next year um Federal Federal extra stuff is gone next year and so we just have to prepare for that Equity our staff do a great job of treating all of our kids equally and um per District policy and for our federal guidelines and always love this because we want our kids to be at the top and uh our programs are all at the bottom you know hungry kids can't learn and um they need a safe and and
uh a safe space to eat and feel welcome and get their needs taken care of and that's all I have you have any questions I love that picture yes they do kids love the Lunch Ladies Love any questions or comments sure I I'm always amazed at what I've learned being on the board is what it takes to run a school district and how many different areas and corners and every single one of them matters in fact then I go to my regular full-time job and I I look around the room sometimes I'm like this doesn't really matter this isn't that impactful um and I see what you do and I see what the rest of the staff does here and I'm just I'm blown away at the amount of empathy and compassion that goes into
what you do and in feeding students um all while you are one of the only I think departments that has to balance Revenue with expenditures like you are expected to generate revenue and then uh balance that and I I can't imagine how hard that is with supply chain um and what you still manage to bring to the students and fresh food and the things that they can have to the point where we see on the graphs that they want to eat school lunch you know it wasn't that long long ago uh that kids always made fun of that and my daughter comes home and talks about how awesome the menu is and how she looks forward to the meals that uh that are made and then thank you for showing us your staff in this
in this presentation because it's amazing to see their smiling faces so thank you for everything you do right thank you I just wanted to add one thing and this is probably right about the time you uh started with SAR Bon Lake School District and um I was lucky enough uh to hand out sack lunches during covid and down at daffodil and uh just the joy of those not just the students in the cars but the parents were like the sense of relief and not only were they good hearty lunches but they also had puzzles that were also donated and I I I just remember just feeling how lucky it was was that I could see something like that in action and um that was not an easy job to do very quickly you had to
come up with something and it was impressive so thank you thank you so um I had the pleasure of hiring you to the district and um it was it was such an easy choice and the thing stuck out to me as I like to get out to the Departments and see things and there are times I swear to gosh I made you nervous because you wanted to get out in your building seeing what's going on instead of this old guy asking you questions and such and to watch what she and her staff did through covid following covid coming back with all the restrictions and that was truly amazing but you have such a passion for making sure every child gets what they need and if I didn't know better I'd say you tell your folks
to probably fudge a little bit if you can to to help the kids out but it's also you see that connection between why the kids need the good nourishment in that and what's happening in the classroom so I'm I'm so proud of of the work that all you ladies do but you you're an amazing person thank you thank you I already gave you a lot of compliments in the back yeah but I'll make this one public I like the slide that you've got uh ongoing focus and uh the second bullet point there was coaching and training kitchen staff to move into higher or I'm sorry longer hour positions to maintain Department continuity and that that really shows the leadership you're providing there in that department you're you're promoting the people getting them the right training
trying to U again look out a longer term view of what what you want to do with this department or take it make sure it's consistent and then I know you can do number three because I've seen you do it through covid and that's monitor food cost to prepare for loss of SCA funds that's never fun to lose funds and tighten the belt but you've done it before and um I have been amazed over the years so thank you thank you I really appreciate it great thank you Charlotte I appreciate it okay uh we have a report of the 2425 budget calendar uh in our packet for information only uh we also have a change order for information regarding the Mountain View Middle School Expansion Project um for information only and this brings us to
board discussion anyone have anything on their mind tonight Paul make it quick this is my public service announcement for encouraging parent organizations to poool I brought that up at our parent leadership uh meeting uh but only with a couple of them and so uh they seemed pretty thrilled about that and they liked the reminder and they thought it was a good idea especially at elementary school because you make long lasting connections there that can take you clear into High School uh I also shared that we had a friend a connection we made in elementary school who contacted my daughter to drive her uh element late Elementary School daughter to a couple of of appointments so these are lasting relationships and they're effective and sometimes it's as a district we're constrained but you guys aren't and
so I'll just keep encouraging everybody to do it um and uh we'll see how long I can keep it up I will say as a parent if you want to know what's going on with your kids and in their Circle Drive carpool because you get to listen to all the stuff right that they talk about so yeah great thanks Paul bill or Kevin anything else all right thank you um we do have our next uh board meeting is Wednesday April 17th right here 6m in the central office board room and that is our evening wrapped up I don't know where my gabble is okay we will go into exempt session at this time thank you for being here
