brings us to superintendent comments Dr dead yeah good evening everyone first of all if you want to grab your little graduation club or we're going to use those in just a second have a little fun but tonight I want to just draw your attention to board member Rick Hendricks uh very few people will even go into some sort of public service but Rick has just been recognized by our state Association you know we call it wazda um for 15 years of service and if you think about that over those 15 years Rick has seen probably over 12 000 students graduate he's helped pep Gap a lot saw your head like go what um he has been a fierce advocate for keeping the pool open um just because of the importance of teaching kids how to

swim especially since we're surrounded by such big bodies of water makes perfect sense and he swears that he is not leaving the board until we build a new pool so we're going to keep him we're going to keep him to that he's helped pass many levees bonds to build beautiful buildings that our kids get to enjoy every day in our staff in our community gets to see and he's just been a real Champion for what we do in this District so if you would join me tonight and congratulating him on his recognition gets a little certain he hates this by the way I'm just telling you um so that's why if you just want to congratulate him with me thank you part about five thousand of these things congratulations here's your certificate and uh that's

probably like what fortunes oh five superintendents too wow yeah I know there you go you're welcome thanks for your service uh board member comment um would you like to start tonight sure okay two things uh I guess I should turn this off a few things I had the privilege of going to the Bonney Lake High School pack the gym night nice the first time I've been able to go I wanted to go in the past I kind of kicked myself in the rear for not going until now I had a lot of fun uh the gym was very full um got to watch our special needs well they call them Special Olympics team and it's a combination of Summer high school students in London Lake High School students and they play on a basketball team

that night they played the Emerald Ridge over to all both teams really participated a lot at a lot of well I saw Brian out there and um so not only were there a lot of families there were a lot of students but both teams it was competitive but they didn't like compete to kill each other they competed because they liked their friends one one guy on the other team for example was so athletic he was like a scoring machine and after he felt like he scored enough he started just handing the ball off to his friends so they could score him uh it was it almost made me cry uh and so um touchy anyway afterwards you know I got to hold up the sign to cheer for somebody I knew and afterwards I got

to get a photograph of the team and they got to autograph this morning it was great I hope to do it again next year um the second thing I went to the curriculum night again for the elementary school it was full again this one was it was full right at the beginning and then for about uh I want to say the first 45 minutes uh after that it was it was slimmed out but again everything was laid out real nice and neat uh I really liked kind of talking to teachers who didn't know who I was and uh they just acted like I was a parent they gave me the curriculum they gave me the uh kind of the guide folks of what they look for and how they try to guide their kids through

all the curriculum they were honest they said well we can't get through it all but this is what we focus on uh and that was the same thing I heard in the study session from our Administration last week so it's nice that the message from admin down to the schools is uh the same so with that Becky thank you very much thank you Paul two really great things I love the Planters games it's just so much fun um I'm glad you're able to go yeah I got some promise later okay um I guess I would just touch really quickly I went to the curriculum night up on the hill at director Falls and shared a lot of the same sentiments you just reported on um it was very well attended very well organized lots of

really really great information uh videos playing for people to pop in and see some of the sex ed videos um all night we're running so I just really appreciate the way that um The District's transparent with the curriculum and that the community is really taking advantage of accounting and seeing what's being taught in our schools so it was a great night and appreciate the opportunity to attend Kevin you both covered exactly what I was going to talk about too which is the ability for our parents to come in and check out curriculum nights um I wanted to also touch on and mention that the good work that the equity advisory council is doing it's Black History Month and everything that Josh is spearheading and all the programs the communication that's going out to our students

and to our parents on everything's happening I think that's great thanks Kevin at this time we moved to audience comments the Sumner Bonnie Lake School Board welcomes the public to the public to its meetings individuals who wish to address the board to sign up online come in to restricted to three minutes in regard remarks regarding District Personnel are not appropriate for the audience comments portion of the meeting I'm going to hand it over to David comments from the public or taken under board advisement and may or may not receive action in future meetings topics including charges or complaints against employees employment or dismissal of personnel acquisition of real estate lawyer client relationships campaign and parameters negotiations should not be discussed in audience comment other information questions or problems can usually be addressed by District staff

come up to the podium state your name address upon this to the school board as a whole and you will have three minutes to speak and I will signal with the Bell when one minute remains our audience first audience speaker is Randy crone questions thank you ma'am uh chair I just wanted to come today and talk about incidents going on at Mountain View Middle School I've written to the uh superintendent about multiple incidents that my neighbors and uh community members up into hallway have recently been seen taking videos off showed to all all of us neighbors it's pretty disturbing and so on understanding that's the whole picture but I I want I would like to ask the board if we can really look at this from an objective data perspective and start to heat map

actual incidents throughout the the district schools there's multiple different uh organizations like Loyola University of Chicago who have done a lot of progressive things to address these hallway incidents and what they call passing time incidents or or non-classroom time incidents and I think that we can really use objective data to do so proper hallway incidents that occur all over the place and I understand that that is common throughout middle schools and high schools even in the elementary schools but as these schools become more full Mountain View is becoming really full we're going to need another Middle School soon but these incidents are unprovoked attacks of children that may just be walking by accidentally bump into someone and so that's one thing that I'd like to ask the board to to bring a regular report during

the superintendence report that shows heat maps of incidents uh how it progresses and what we do to be covered to those I did read the threat assessment and I think it's a good first step I think we need to continue to move this forward with objective data and report that commonly to the board thank you thank you that includes audience comment s interesting matters in accordance with policy 1310 there are feeding policies and bylaws included for first reading as well as procedures their first reading I'd like to make a few comments okay um one of the things we're going to make some comments about one of our procedures out here and I'm gonna you know over the years I've mentioned this several times because board members we have three functions that we really do we

hire and fire the superintendent we're in charge of fiscal responsibility and the other one is policies to review policies and approve those but we don't approve the procedures um and you know since I've been here this 15 years I will say that this district is probably in the best place that I've ever seen it um we we have a great staff of leaders Lori has hired some amazing people and I gotta say when I when I first came here I used to call this North Korea because it seemed like you know if you weren't here from you you couldn't do nothing but that's a whole other comment but when it comes to the policies each of us up here I believe are on some type of a committee I'm on the policy Review Committee and

every once in a while there's policies and procedures that you know we get every month we get several that we we reviewed and you know in there there's usually Lori's in there different directors are in there and each time there's probably a director that is responsible for a policy and they bring it in because they've worked on it for quite a while on this policy that I'm going to talk about this procedure I'm going to talk about it's is the gender inclusive schools now for the policy Review Committee we started working on this fall our procedure about six months ago and I will say uh David has worked extremely hard on this procedure and it's went through many Renditions um however you know I'm going to speak just for myself No Other Board member up

here just just just for myself this is not a you know no body up here is has any you know input on these comments that I'm about to make and so um the thing about it is is these policies a lot of it is driven by laws that we you know we have to live by um you know the legislators down there in Olympia they pass these laws and you know that's pretty much what we have to go by in these policies Mazda you know they make some policies up and a lot of times we look at those policies but we tweak them to how we like them here at Summer a little bit but a lot of times we accept the ones that was the hotel but at other times we do tweak them

a little bit and make them policies so we we like them so on this specific procedure one of the things that I'm going to say is I think every parent in the community should read this procedure everybody this this is the one that is in my 15 years that is kind of really gotten to me a little bit and so I would highly recommend that every every parent read this procedure um a couple of the things that I'm going to talk about on and I'll just start out with it is that share what what your orientation is um I had something the other day that I came across and I'm just gonna look at this so I can make sure I get what I was going to say here um when it comes to this

this is how I look at this oh you know a man is not a woman and vice versa a woman is not a man um one has the freedom to live their life as one wishes but they should not have the right to infringe on the rights of others and so you know again I don't care what you lgbtq or whatever that is whatever you choose or whatever you identify as um but it should not interfere with the rights of others so a couple of things here in this procedure basically when a student comes to school and they identify as a transgender you know they they're allowed to use whichever restroom they desire and or locker room and one of the things about that is is that sure we're gonna provide other space for people

to have their privacy however if that individual who identifies as a transgender desires to use the woman's locker room or the woman's bathroom that's their choice and I just I just have issues with that I can't I just can't accept that um one of my things on that is is that if the transgender individual asserts is right or their right to uh use the bathroom use the locker room you know what about the rights of the other individuals in there since I re retired I probably watched too much YouTube or read too much the other day I was I saw a video of a young lady who I was talking about being in a locker room and a male coming in the locker room of course she didn't know this was going to happen and

the next thing you know all these females are in the locker room and here's a six foot four 200 some pound man getting unclothed right next to all of them and she talks about how traumatized how awkward it is violated they felt and so what I'm I I just understand where where are their rights and so when I'm talking about all this understanding it's not the district that I have the problem with the district has done everything that they possibly can but they have to follow the laws from what the legislature puts out from Olympia I just I just can't I can't fathom that and I really think that there's got to be a different way and when this procedure talks about that accommodations are there for the individual but if the individual chooses not

to they're going to use that restroom or their locker and so my question I wonder about is this what happens when all the other females that are in those locker rooms or bathroom says well I want my own privacy what does the school district do then all of a sudden everybody in that locker room says oh I want my own personal I want I want privacy somewhere else but you don't have that so all these females that are in that locked room what do they do then just pick up and leave I mean again where is their right to have to feel safe secure in their environment in the locker room because obviously that is what's about to happen again the district is doing everything that they can and David worked very hard on this

and the policy committee hashed it out for six months but again this is driven by the Legislative people down in Olympia and this is what we have to go by so just that's the way it is um I want to go through a few more things here hey one of the other things that I can't get my head wrapped around is all the pronoun stuff again when I was here 15 years ago one time I well it's going to be like the teacher of the day I don't know what how that was called that but I had to go to I went to a classroom and followed a teacher around maybe a different teacher but I sat in that classroom and I thought it was told chaos But the teacher she had it under control

I guess but I couldn't I couldn't understand how she could do her job with everything that was going on and uh also I think it was a man it was a math class and that's not one of my strong suits however um I was watching all the other kids or the students and some of them we're really struggling and other ones they just kind of sat there and I asked this one young girl I said you know how do you handle this and how do you learn anything and she goes well you just try to block it out and you go along to get along and I thought to myself well that should never be like that and sometimes I think about that as the same way with these pronouns stuff and I don't I

just don't understand it and I think a name is a name and that's what you use when you're in school but times are changed I guess I always call myself an old dinosaur I'm down here extinct but that's just the way it is for me I don't I don't I have a hard time grasping these Concepts and so when I say that about you know go along to get along I always wonder how many of these students do that with those pronoun stuff just because they don't want to be picked on or something like that because they don't buy into it so here they are just going along to get along and then I think you know all all I ever hear was about the more about the mental health problems they're having all around

you know in schools Society in general but but sometimes I wonder is any of this kind of helped precipitate that because you got everybody at school he wasn't different not their names but pronouns to this this and you know sometimes I wonder well maybe maybe they just don't know who the heck they are anymore because of all the pressure to beat all the other stuff so I have a real real hard time with this pronoun stuff and I I don't know that I'll ever be accepted of it um now that another issue that I'm just getting them all off my chest here tonight um I've never understood males playing female sports so transgenders playing female sports you know and the volleyball net for females Sports is lower why is that what because they can't they're

not going to be able to spike it over the males some can I should not say that there are some out there but in general you know you have a lower net for the females there's a reason for it I'll be genetics right you know women shouldn't say it like that but and then the other thing is is that uh basketball no no no no isn't the the women's basketball a little bit different than what the male basketball is that they play with okay and so I I just I I can't I can't grasp that issue about transgender males competing with the females so but probably the thing that really got me the most on all this was how we I think parents have rights to know what's going on with their kids in school

students um with this procedure if an individual comes to school identifies as a transgender and says I'll use my name and his say the transgender's name must say it was Rick but when he comes to school he identifies as a female and this and the name is now Rose so in school is going to be referred to as Rose now and if I get this wrong David look at me and tell me I'm wrong but what if the if the student does not want the parent to know that in school the name is Rose and not Rick the school is not a it's it's just not have the right to tell the parent now everything they do at school goes under their their what's that in their education yeah and they're in their educational records

but if the educational record says the name is Rick but when they're in school they go by rules and they don't want the parent to know the parent is not notified and I think that parents have the right to know what is going on in the school with their children or their students their kids whatever and so I think that I think it becomes that we teach and sometimes kids it's okay to be deceitful and I have a problem with that because do you take that on later in life that well okay I got to do this when I was in school I didn't have to tell the truth there my parents thought I was Rick spool and Rose they'll never know about it is that right I don't think that's right um again I'm

just going to say nobody else on the board expresses these opinions I'm expressing them I don't think it's right but the school district is doing everything they can to follow the law so nobody should really have any complaints with the school district if the complaint has to be with the legislative body about how things should be because when say a freshman comes to school she goes in the locker room the next thing is there's some senior a couple of lockers down he's changing his clothes what are her rates where is where does where does her right to feel safe secure in her environment and so um hopefully if I have expressed myself okay but again I think every parent needs to read the procedure or read the policy and the complaint again is not what

the district this was the legislative body down in Olympia because um I think the school has done the best that they can in all they can so let's make a two cents all right again this is for information only we are not voting or taking action on any policies this evening we're going to move on to business matters also for your information there's a budget status report for November 30th 2022 included for your information as well as the 2023-24 budget development calendar we're going to move into a presentation by Chief Financial Officer Benson um who will be presenting a budget update to the board good evening oh it doesn't matter how prepared we are leave it to bang alore thank you oh sorry about it all right there right here okay thank you good evening

sorry about the technical problem here so tonight I'm going to update you um budget and expressway I want to introduce to you the budget calendar and talk a little bit about the legislative sessions and update you the answer button so this is the very high level at a grand but I also have a handout I think it's in your package yes it's more detail on each test from pretty much December January until the end of the school year to develop a budget for next year so the most important timeline is these three items in the bottom is July 10 we need to submit to the ESD the whole budget including the four years objection and then we will update for preliminary review with the board on July 12th and we will have the puppet hearings

and adoptions in August foreign for the 68th by eminent legislatures the first year is always the long sessions about 105 days and it starts January 9th and they're going to be end in April 23rd so today is 30 the day um 38. of the 105 days so um in this legislative sessions superintendent radio focus on more in the special ed funding there's couple three bills about that and then also talk a little bit about supporting the school and stronger Staffing and supporting the safe School and most importantly is providing free meals for all students and that's very important to all of us and and the students and family and hopefully this will pass we're not sure so just waiting for the results uh on the other hand the governor's proposal mostly focused on homeless crisis

Behavior Health System Crimea clean energy but uh energy education is not on top of business unfortunately so some bills I listed out but actually more views that we are watching that related to school districts finance and the most important things right now and more attractions is the special ed funding uh it really focuses on how they increase the funding for special ed because as you know currently we are underfunded not fully fund special ad so hopefully this bill will help us post the Gap and not saying that they will be fully fund but at least close the gap better than currently we have and another bill is the transportation funding uh of course the Stark formula for Courtney we get funding is far from fully fund for transportation and especially we have right now they

really focus on the special passenger uh those are our homeless kids and foster care and special ed students so they need additional funding for those and should be fully fund for those who passed you because we a lot of time we have to hire a chart of us to drive the kids bottle weight not just within the District boundary but it's off so those they do not reimburse us so we have to pay out the levy money for those to offset the differences and of course the bill is for free is to school meals and some of those couple bills um it's been there for a couple times in in the past and it didn't go anywhere and I don't think it will go anywhere either because so it's a fun this is a one-time

funding we got since the pandemic happened and this has helped us to reopening School social distancing and how you know we track the covet at the time then through the time he that we also need some money to improve the air quality and uh classroom for students and for a staff and also some academic recovery because kisses missed the whole year school and we need some help additional help to again close the gap of their academic coverage so so far there's exploration day for the so true the first line is the end of this year and so far we spent 78 and we intend to spend more artists will be spend more so we do not want to leave any money on the table because we already plant from the day one what we need

to spend and what is allowed and it's all listed out on a plan and we continue moving on with the same plans three years ago any questions yeah I just want to say thank you to you and your staff for your team for putting this together this is helpful because you know then it makes me sit up and say wait a minute I've got a role to play and a budget development to ask better questions stuff like that and anybody in the public can click on this this is an item you can find on the agenda to look at it so print it out if you see sub monitor you want to come down and have more information on if you can follow it but what it shows is that this is a methodical process

to come up with the questions and it also shows you really can't start to put a fine pick on all the numbers until after the legislature convenience yeah at the end of April so that's how fast you have to put the final finished catches on it to give it to us yeah if they don't have the special session that's one year they have two special sessions it didn't end until June it has all the deadline for whatever Staffing and everything so we have to jump in and submit in July for the whole budget over a million dollars that was the toughest time I hope that this year is not like that yeah I hope we don't special yeah thank you any other questions good job thank you thank you thank you all right moving on

to instructional materials adoption I'd like to invite Steve schulen our executive director of instructional Services act to go over some instructional materials to be used um and for first reading our good evening members of the board Dr bent um I think I was last up here in December uh bringing some materials from our dcimc committee and as the district curriculum and Structural Materials committee uh this time around I've got um a few different uh curriculum uh that have been recommended for adoption but they've already been into kind of three categories so I'll lead off with um next-gen personal finance Financial algebra course uh Financial algebra is um you know a CT course students will take Financial algebra um oftentimes as a part of a pathway it can be then uh it does meet a third

year math requirement for students um I'll just read to you just a little bit from our course description of financial algebra and it says um this is an engaging course covering topics from getting your first job to retirement and everything in between students will develop an understanding of why is credit use and learn the value of saving and investing uh budgeting pay for college buying a house goes on so lots of great topics it's been just a little while for uh since we last adopted um curriculum and so a team from CTE some staff got together and they did review some different curriculum options and have a um suggest that this one move forward um and then uh should the curriculum that I believe everybody has access to review uh move forward then uh what

would follow is uh refinement of Frameworks to accompany a new text um any questions on uh Financial algebra sounds like a great course students too at a great third year uh option for kids definitely okay next up I think as uh really many know uh there's been a lot of work uh ongoing to bring um Air Force JROTC to bond Lake High School uh next school year and so in the Air Force JROTC year one uh we are bringing to the board for approval to curriculum that are part of this this um year one um and the the first one is Milestones of aviation history it really is just that it's a textbook that goes over the history of Aviation for the United States second resource leadership education 100 again well titled it is exactly

that it's about leadership um uh for the students a little bit about what it says again in the course catalog for the Air Force JROTC uh this class is recommended for students who are interested in Hands-On leadership community building and team development so um these two curriculum are what you know comes along with bringing Air Force JROTC uh to the district on a very similar um note at Sumner High School we are doing work to bring JROTC Army to Sumner High School next school year and likewise have two curriculum resources to present to the board the first one is leadership Education and Training Army and the second one is a drill pamphlet and um and this is the resource that they will use from this students learn Advanced drilling ceremonies and creatively developed exhibition drill

maneuvers preparation for several performances throughout the year um I could go on but I mean it's a pretty self-explanatory but again these are the resources that the Department of Defense uh guides us to use with the GRTC any questions yes sir I think it's fantastic if there were both these programs come with school district step by step getting it ready to happen so any other questions okay okay thanks everyone all right at this time we have an Athletics update from the director of Athletics Brian Kalin welcome first thank you for providing me the opportunity to give this overview and I can probably restart I think I've got it I didn't like having nothing but um you know our promises to provide you know children with opportunities to you know learn and be successful throughout their

life and I think athletic plays a key role in that Athletics and activities so it fulfills the promise and I didn't get that exactly right I should probably promise but I'm a little nervous and get that later but um so stop it hey Ben this is Ben Sanchez thank you because if you weren't here this was Hayden nightmare beautiful things were you in practice again so no value and support every student to graduate with promising future so I really messed that up but um so anyway that's our promise this is kind of good band Mike clicker here so now actually you can go back sorry and so you know support students and get them ready for graduation that's the key and then it talks about you know fair and inclusive practices Equitable access and what

I'm going to focus on a lot tonight is the support that the athletic department provides to students and we'll kind of focus on that and I'll touch on some of the others so you know Athletics the one thing that supports the academic mission of the schools and you know research has shown that students have participate in athletics and activities have higher gpas better attendance lower Dropout rates and fewer decimal problems um you know they also provide lessons that you can't learn anywhere else you know I obviously the classroom is super important the most important but Athletics and activities provide another outlet and another place for kids to learn things that they can't learn so fair play self-discipline you know self-confidence the skills to again reach our our promise of getting them ready to graduate and

be successful after school so and they provide an incentive for a lot of kids too they're the hook they kind of gets them involved I can speak for myself you know as a student I wasn't always the best student but that kind of kept me going and it got me to where I am today so personal level so so background information you know we have a lot of diverse interests from our students so in order to meet the needs of diverse population we offer a lot wide variety of active Athletics and activities that are sponsored by the wiaa and I'm going to touch on this and just kind of touch we're trying to get a lot of information out on our website and so we've added a lot of this information so if you go

to our website it shows all the different programs for each season for both the high school and middle school programs without too much but just to show you that we're trying to get that information out there in a variety of ways so um and then the other thing I want to speak to is we're trying to make it more convenient for parents and Guardians to register their students for athletics because that's one thing as a parent you know when you don't know how to register it can be frustrating so in the past we've had two different platforms and we've kind of standardized it to one platform that's called final forms and so again we have that information on our website I'm not going to click on everything but it's on there and it shows parents

and and the students how to register for the sports and it's one platform so once you do it Middle School this first year it's kind of tough because you have to enter a lot of information but once it's in there it should be a lot easier from now on for parents and students so and then in relationship to Southern body like School District policy the main policy that's related to Athletics is 2151 and it provides the expectations for both uh first for uh both students and staff so I'll summarize a few of those things obviously one of the most important ones is extracurricular academic standards we want our students to be athletes student athletes and not just athletes so you know 2.0 GPA minimum and pass all classes just to be eligible and then we're

gonna we're getting real intentional about sharing the eligibility information so again on our website we show that on here and just you know make sure and that we know that that's not the only place that people look but that's one way we get it out again 2151 also speaks to these things risk physical insurance and we cover these through the final form registration platform we you know we show students if they're a basketball player all the risks the basketball player basketball and their parents and whatnot and you know we also obtain Vital Information about the students you know medical issues they might have so that we can get that information to their coaches and make sure that you know they they can they're prepared to handle things if anything comes up and then students are

cleared once they and their parent would already complete all the forms and it's been confirmed that they meet all the requirements so one of those is physicals they have to have a current physical have to have insurance and whatnot so and again that's all on the platforms and then for staff we're also using this platform to clear our staff because you know for the safety of our athletes we want to make sure that those that are staff coaches and advisors you know have met requirements and you know know what's expected of them so we use the platform to clear them as well and I just I'm going to click on this just to kind of give you an idea of the various requirements these are all the requirements that a coach an advisor has to

clear before they're allowed out with our students and you can see that all these the ones in yellow here are HR so we rely on HR we work very closely with our human resources team to make sure that all these are met and so it's it's what I'm getting at there is it's not just the athletics department we work a lot with a lot of other departments to make sure that our kids can participate safely so and then the green section here you know the the athletic coordinators at each building make sure that those requirements are met and then the blue section we my my office helps with the athletic coordinator to make sure and you can see all the different things they have to take coaches trainings um you know different sports have to

do different things football tackling they have to do Hands-On tackling and it seems like they add things every day which is daunting for the coaches but again it's in the essence of student safety so um again coach advisor training one of the things I touched on there was that each season we do a coach advisor liability training so I lead that training and we provide the coaches advisors with the Strategic plan so we show them that they play an important role like I discussed earlier and then the effective coaching model is kind of what we use to evaluate our coaches and again I'll click on that real quick and so just some of the areas real quickly you know knowledge of expertise of the sport we want to make sure our coaches know the sport

that they're coaching uh professional relationships with players discipline um professional relationships with colleagues public relations and you know management fiscal responsibilities so and that's how we use that data to evaluate our coaches at the end of each season so and then the handbook we also provide them with a coach's handbook and so they have to go to all over all these sections of this handbook you know as sections on standard of care the 13 legal duties of coaching risk management issues you know again I won't click on all these facility equipment guiding policies injury protocol covert information which hopefully you won't have to worry about too much longer but we still have to make sure that they're aware of those things and then once they go through all those items then they sign saying that

they've done that and it's checked off on the on the one of the on the things that I showed you on final form so um and then the good thing about final forms is they can view their status because that's one thing our coaches told us it's like all these things we have to do and we don't even know where we're at so now they can go in and they can see the all the things that they have to do and what's completed and what's not completed so it's very positive thing and then again policy 2151 talks about Anonymous surveys so we always want to continue to improve our programs and get input and so at the conclusion of each season and none of the surveys conducted and Coach uh so with parents and students

so parents and students can both give input on how the season went and again I'm not going to click on this because it takes a while and but essentially the good news is we're listening to that and then feedback is considered as we evaluate our coaches so speaking on Equity again this is all 2151 related to that policy the annual athletic evaluation ospi provides a survey and what they ask is each team building and District complete a survey so what we do is we give the survey to our coaches and they talk about items like how many participants there are if facilities are Equitable between their programs and other programs how their programs are you know promoted in the media and other platforms and whatnot and then we take that information and compile it our

district or building athletic coordinators and do a building worksheet for their buildings all the different sports and then we I take that and do a district worksheet and then we use that to evaluate our programs so and then another component as student athletic interest survey that's conducted every three years and just to see if male and female student interest is being met and we can serve we consider the survey results when planning and developing programs so like for example sorry it takes a second here but that's kind of a summary I know it's hard to read but we break it down by sport so the top requested sports are there and the good news is we're offering all those Sports so we're meeting that need but you can see and we break it down by

gender and the reasons for non-participation reasons you know and then we break it down by gender again and we have this for all the different schools and then again we use this when students say well you know we really like this sport we look and see okay well is that our other students wanting these Sports and so we use that data as we're examining our program so so some other things just touch on facility use demand for our fields and Facilities of skyrocketing and it's it's very challenging to meet those demands but we're working within the framework that the board has established you know with the categories listed in the fee schedule so just kind of a quick overview is like when you're looking at Fields our our school programs take top priorities so if

it's you know a Sumner Bonney Lake School District team they would get first priority then Bonnie Lakes Park and Parks and Rec it's second priority and then local youth programs and then it kind of goes from there based on the category so we use that and we follow that and then just kind of a side note uh due to ongoing misuse and vandalism at Sunset and panther which is unfortunate we're starting to lock those stadiums from uh Dust to Dawn when it's not being when they're not being used and it's a slippery slope because we want to make sure we give people access to our facilities but we also want to take care of our facilities because you know people are funding that the public is funding those are funding those facilities and we want

to make sure that we're you know keeping them for the so that they have a long length of use so and then the other thing is just you know when you implement something like that and we have to think of additional staff that is required to lock and kind of kind of create some different challenges but we're making sure again and making the other thing we're doing is making sure that groups are paying the listed fees because again we want to be able to keep those make facilities maintained so we're following the district or the board approved fee schedule and again yes those are used offset costs some other items of note athletic transportation is a huge challenge transportation in general because we do have a lack of drivers and I know that's something that

we've heard a lot of feedback you know we're not providing enough transportation and all I can say to that is we're doing everything possible to transport the kids whenever we can we're trying to you know partner with Charter companies and things like that the problem with Charter companies is they often charge fees when things are canceled and they're very very expensive so again we're trying to be good stewards of public funds as well so it's a challenge but we're working with our transportation department and they're doing everything possible to make sure that we're providing Transportation whenever possible we'll continue to work on that because that's an area that I'll you'll see later that I'll touch on and then event management you know we host a wide variety of events in the district and you know

our athletic coordinators and administrators and event staff and Pac staff and police they do a great job in putting on positive and safe events for our students and the community so uh some other items to know again athletic trainers and nursing staff we contract with Olympic Sports and Spine for athletic training coverage at our high schools and the trainers along with the nurses and you know they're key members of our team and again they help support the promise as well because they really get to know the kids and you know those relationships are so important for all of our students so and then online ticketing and credit card sales one thing that was asked a lot of is you know people would say when we go to a game Halls we can use is cash

and some people don't carry cash and then they have to go to cash machines and stuff like that so we've we've implemented credit card ticket sales at both of our high schools and we're even implementing online ticketing where you can pre-purchase your tickets there's a small fee but again you have the option so it's not mandatory that you use it but it's kind of a convenience thing and it's really going to come in handy for our football games in the fall where there's huge crowds people have their tickets and we can get them in quickly so we're excited about that so I've touched on some of these things working well and serve Anonymous surveys are generally positive and I'll say I'm proud of our coaches and advisors because I think we have some of the

best that I've ever they're the best that I've ever worked with and I've ever seen I mean they do amazing things for our kids and so they're they're fulfilling our promise they're knowing valuing and supporting every student and without them some of these students would have a real hard time so and then you know athletic same with athletic coordinators building support staff administrators District support staff you know the athletic trainers I touched on event staff again same with them and then the other thing is they're thriving in the classroom our students are doing a great job in the classroom and on the field court or athletic venue so um you know we've touched on last year's summary of their accomplishments and I won't click on that but one thing is it's amazing how many of

our teams as teams out above three point and many above 3.5 team gpas which is outstanding again the final forms platform gets more of the things working well it's streamlining the athletic process clearing for athletes and coaches Human Resources again we continue to work with them and they're doing a great job of helping us to streamline the processes because one thing that we're running into is we're having a hard time finding coaches because of that long list of things we make them do some people are getting to a point where they're like you know I just want to coach so we want to make that part the clearance process as easy as possible so that they can do what they love to do and then the student interest survey is showing that we're offering Equitable

access to the most desired programs as I shared the most desired programs we're offer in all those Sports for the most part there's a few outliers but and then just view the board and you know Dr dent and the community just a high level of support which is so important for athletic programs in our community and your support and our community support are out of this world so appreciate that and then areas of improvement you know the one thing as we grow we need to continue to develop procedures and infrastructure to support the programs so kind of like what I was talking about when we locked the field it creates more Staffing and so we just need to keep building and we need to keep building procedures and so everybody's aware of kind of how

we operate here updating and improving the final forms platform this year it was a challenging year because we had to build it from scratch and we got some feedback from people of things that shouldn't have been in there and things that should have been in there so we'll continue to to you know listen and make it better and then again continue to work with our human resources department to streamline processes developing positive relationships which is important for everybody you know we always want to keep developing those uh one thing that's come up recently is we've had some concerns or some some wishes of getting access for fans that can't make it to games like grandparents and elderly people and people out of the area so one thing we've kind of looked at in the past

is getting cameras you can get cameras at Art stadiums and our gyms that would broadcast we could stream games on and then people buy a subscription they can watch their you know if they're not able to make it they can watch those so we're looking into that it's not something it's something we have to go through the process and see if that is what we want to do and then look for ways that better serve our underrepresented populations so I talked about surveys one thing that came up is our female high school students are underrepresented in our athletic programs so we need to you know I've already talked with Dr men a little bit on some ways that we can address that and we're looking forward to addressing that to give our emails more you

know more Equitable opportunities and that's all I got so any questions because that's what it's all about kids like I touched on a lot of that internal Staffing things but Ulta at the end of the day it's about our student athletes and the programs I can attest to as a parent that the final forms Works fantastic it's the best one we've had so far and I'm glad that we're gonna have it it makes the process and then use it twice already this year and it was the second time when to use it took me about two minutes to complete the registration which is the fastest I've ever done in the 10 years that I've had kids in the district so thank you for continuing to improve that process and it made the payment went right

to the payment portal they didn't have to go find a different portal it was all very strength I'm great glad to hear that and again it's been a team effort and again we're going to continue to improve it so it gets even better the one thing that I really like about that is the communication piece too are coaches can you know email their it's one click and they can email the parents updates and all kinds of things so it's been great okay thanks Brian this has to do with equity and talk a little bit about the female actors get that up I want to ask about the three reduced lunch every week's so I know we have lots of uh sports that are non-cut come on out give it a try see if you like

it uh then we do have sports that are select or they have made Cuts Like basketball soccer and baseball right um you know a lot of the people that make those teams basketball not all but a lot soccer you know they start very young on select teams but they're young right and so if I had a bed I would I'm gonna throw it out of it if I had a bet there's not a lot of representation from free and reduced launch on those teams probably more representation on football because it doesn't cut wrestling because it doesn't cut but the question then is how do you measure and how do you compare whether or not you're meeting equitably the needs of the freedom is to lunch students and families because honestly attending some of the events

is quite financial burden to the families as well yeah that's a tough one you know that's one we definitely have to keep working on um one thing you know is we kind of talk through this we want to try to start offering some you know intramural programs and things for kids that you know maybe don't make the team and things like that but that's that's something and as far as identifying those kids you know that's a tough one because to try to get it it's Dr Denton people that have been principals know to even get a list of you can't get a list of kids that and so it's really hard to identify those kids they have to basically say they're okay with being identified there's actually a form in final forms but that's one

way you know as we we use final forms the one thing we could do is we could actually sort and put you know filters on where we could see how many if we introduced lunch kits or but again they have to identify themselves so that's the challenge so yeah yeah thank you yeah thanks Brian [Music] for information only uh we have a naming rights update um Dr dentz provided that report to the board um as a follow-up from a request of October um 2022 board meeting we also have a couple of change order reports regarding Mountain View Middle School also in your packet for information only this leads us to a board discussion and these are discussions I was looking at you all right well and thank you again for doing the name Navy ranks

memo I think that's like the food forum for us to look at and read things from the work that was put into it um I'll probably bring it up again at another meeting after I have time to digest it but it's great because the rest of the community can click on it and see what the pros and cons are because it's food for thought that's meter with that in mind you know and we've had a procedure on gender inclusive schools one of the things that are provided in the updated procedure is the ability for any student to go and request accommodations for more privacy so that means if it's a if it's a shy uh male or a shy female who wants extra privacy they can go ask um with that my question is you

know I really believe that all students should feel comfortable with the privacy in both the bathrooms in the locker rooms and as I don't think students should have to ask for an accommodation no matter what I mean I think these accommodations should be provided and they should have be free enough to go and use them at their will I don't think we have accommodations at this point to allow students of however if they want extra privacy to do that so really I'm going to be asking for another report tonight and I hope you get to live in the report we really have three things and that's you know what kind of facilities are currently available for students that want extra privacy and then number two is there a need for more facilities and maybe we've

already got handled um number three uh what are some suggestions for an improvement if needed I think some of the answers could be readily available um but again it's I'm not trying to put more burden on the district heading into the budget season to end already but you know if we gave them until the start of the school year next year my guess is we'd have a report before them but it's just the three things what kind of facilities are we current are currently available for students who seek privacy accommodations is there a need for more facilities and number three what are some suggestions for improvement if needed I think three people think yeah that'd be a decent report to see it just does let me just say something yes so this is where I

just want to jump in and talk about our Capital facility advisory committee that's starting in March um well I am going to put in a Shameless plug because we are looking for people to join that committee um what Randy said is right we need to do middle school but we also need a lot of other things because this area is growing exponentially fast and when our city council members continue to approve large developments those usually come with kids and those kids want to come to our schools because we have incredible schools our teachers are I mean they are like some of the best you will find so this is a very coveted area to live but I'm telling you like space is at a premium right now and I you know I I appreciate development

I also appreciate when kids have room to walk down the hallways and feel safe at school um so perhaps this might be something that we could discuss at the Capitol facility advisory committee that Romina today is managing um along with our Consultants from hayline but um this is a much larger issue that needs to be taken into greater context with just the rapid development you see around you that isn't aligned with public schools and bang showed you one of the house bills is up um for like for current legislation I think it was House Bill 1353 we have to have a 60 majority vote in order to pass a bond well all of them just failed yesterday eight failed miserably so in order to make some of these changes um that I think a majority

of people with support requires them to actually vote in a way that supports schools and building you know more facilities so that's an option for you to consider other than a standalone report My Hope Is that this report again if they identify that they need some temporary things right away they can do it but it could be then passed off to the facilities for the capital Improvement committee to really look at it and say hey this is not we needed at the elementary schools middle schools the high schools and again they might be needing the need already I don't know so it's it's just those three things at this point to see if we need to go any further but the further part to me would be kicking it to the capital facilities committee to

really focus in and develop some ideas okay thoughts on that request some more information oh I forgot to say a couple things earlier uh so I thought it I better but I'm only gonna say one thing uh I'm sure I might have uh some people might want to make some comments about what I said tonight and they'll probably come back at the next board meeting but I won't be at the next board meeting so they might want to save it to the board meeting after that in I'll be here in April so if somebody's got any issues or concerns want to make any comments to me come in April because I won't be here next month what about the report I don't know the report Oh I thought we were uh I mean usually I'll

jump right in but I don't need any extra work right now so um when I know that well I know we're gonna have a group of experts that can tackle this um I mean I can I can do whatever you want you know and I will but it's like we're gonna have a whole group of people that could take a look at this under a microscope for you Marina what does your committee start s beginning of March um I do believe I have some data regarding what the current facilities are yeah so I certainly put that together so this I mean Maria this is an extra work for you oh I I understand um but I do have the information so it's easily something that can be rolled into a presentation as part of the

CPAP community I think the reports that you've done are great because they're kind of concise they're easily digestible uh again this might be more of a family I know that the capital facilities committee is going to go on for like a year right 16 months 16 months so I'm hoping that we can at least if we do need some improvements and Facilities there might be options very inexpensively to make some temporary things um important like it was a good start from there but I certainly understand you don't need extra work but I think 16 months is a little 16 months is a little long to to wait to see if we don't need some temporary things right now okay yeah that's good that's good yeah so let's move on sure we're gonna say something are

you gonna say something don't wait I think I'll take Marina thank you I think we're going to answer buying questions I think as long as we're in line with board operating principles of it readily available uh information right but no we don't need a big report at this time knowing that no I just have a spreadsheet that I used to go perfect and something that can easily pull up perfect once I locate it and and share it okay so readily available information knowing that this um topic will be handled and reviewed by the upcoming committee as well thank you for taking my time all right because Maria's trying to open that big beautiful building to our left that's like a priority right now thank you Rick so mine was somewhere else okay I think you
