spring we're still waiting for spring gonna give it a few more i take it can we can start too i'm recording so just so you guys know okay that's on the dot let's let's give them another four minutes or so okay i think tells me maybe more than 17 people are gonna dial in as well or maybe not is anyone here when the weather's supposed to change can you have sun for a few more days gonna be like this for ages ages i hope so i could use a nice indian summer i'm wondering if that name has to change i need i knew someone was going to say that as soon as they said that i don't know i don't know i don't know the answer to it i just yeah there's probably a more

appropriate name to use that's probably incorrect now harvest an extended summer it's an extended summer i have us 80 and sunday through next saturday basically i'm good let's give it a couple more here i see spring hey spring spring you're muted sorry i'm just just pulled into my driveway just got home from the ferry so i'm probably gonna turn my video off here in a minute as i walk into my house and everything just to warn ya but hello everyone that's great yeah welcome hello all right well should we get started then sounds great all right it's 702 and we're gonna call tonight's meeting of the fashion island school district board meeting to order and we need to have uh approval of agenda a promotion for that um i mean i'll make a motion to

approve the agenda all in favor aye hi did you get that jody yeah i got it okay and that brings us to public comment and we uh because of the suspension of some of the opma rules we do public comment by reading things into the record now and i'll let slade read those and talk a little bit more about how it works uh thanks for uh first of all for everybody for joining us this evening um thanks for those who sent public comment i will go ahead and read them also it's it's probably um good to perhaps reiterate it's uh normally in a in a public comment setting the the board and myself um just received the public comment typically uh do not respond to kind of each public comment in in the in the

board meeting itself um so um so i'll go ahead and read uh the letters again thanks and i'll just read them in the order in which they were received and i believe in which jody put them into the agenda if there is more public comment that anyone would like to submit the public please send it to to jody here at the district office we'll make sure that it gets entered into the public record and that the board uh reads it as well so i'll go ahead and start this comment is from joe and selena yarkin to the book and administration i appreciate that we face a huge challenge in moving classes online i continue to question the wisdom of the amount of review required is daunting you say you have addressed this issue by adding

weekly check-ins for math science and languages maybe that will do the trick hindsight will be 2020 but given what we know i am unconvinced that we have landed on the best model i appreciate the danny made accommodations to run ap calculus and ap chemistry straight through signed slave bergen this next comment looks like it's from a group of community so dear visd board superintendent mcsheehy principles rock allison and gertzel and vea we're reaching out in an effort to continue the conversation with bisd in connection with the current school reopening plan including the move to an alternating corridor based system significant turns raised by members of our school community at the latest scuba meeting have not yet been addressed including gaps in instruction for core classes math science foreign language learning loss during off quarters ell

supports impact on ap classes impact on ieps and 504 plans mental health support and additional needs identified by community latina bashan described on the 1813-2020 statement below we would also appreciate understanding more clearly one what benefit visd believes is provided by an alternating quarter based system two what was the basis of bisd's decision to move to an alternating quarter based system three what training and support is being provided to teachers to transition existing semester-based curriculum in addition to the move to an online format and four what is the back-up plan if this drastic change proves to be unworkable vhs mcmurray appeared to be moving forward with the current plan in spite of the fact that we have yet to hear from visd leadership with an official response to the many concerns and questions raised we

understand that the expedited pace at which these decisions are being made and implemented is challenging but this lack of communication and transparency is extremely concerning given the current unprecedented situation we request that visd schedule an additional scoreboard meeting in advance of its next regularly scheduled meeting on august 27th uh to allow the school board to fully vet the impact of the proposed school reopening plan including soliciting and considering recommendations from the reopening team stakeholders and community dad latina vashon in the meantime we ask that vhs and mcmurray immediately offer additional recorded and translated q a sessions to provide much needed details to impacted families we urge both visd leadership and the school board to more fully engage with the community during this time of major transition to ensure that the whole spectrum of inputs on

these issues are taken into account we are deeply concerned that a lack of family engagement in this process is likely to lead to many to withdraw enrollment from visd further impacting all of our students as a community we cannot afford to to fail those unable to access effective education by pushing forward with reopening plans without fully exploring the impact of these changes on our students and teachers sign trista baldwin bree bradrick tammy brockway joyce lisa coley blyth and matt danes becca econopolopolis tessa francis barbara gale phd david hackett valerie david harrington kellyanne henley renee henson josephine hutton nick and kelly keenan sunny knight and mark stromberg robin and megan mcgonagall ray price phd anthony and susan poohs heather and barbara tweever irene took our terry vickers attacked statement by committee dad latina and organization run

by and for island latinos um they're attaching this statement um but it doesn't look like community.latina bashan says i'll go ahead and read it i think we've all read this before already um but let's go ahead and read it again in addition to working on systemic change we have provided a bilingual therapist at chautauqua for two years and have recently provided 30k to keep the ecap program open preschool open we're hoping to accomplish a lot more at the school district in the call to parents our superintendent stated that he is working to come to commun working to community to work with latino families this is not entirely true yet we don't want to give up we want to highlight a few successes in what the school can do to change educational equity problems that currently

exist between the white and latino students on vashon we are concerned that many vashon families have already created learning pods that pay tutors and others to deepen their children's learning in this crisis we feel that our latino families are not being offered the equal education to latino youth we need this to change at the beginning of the crisis we organize bilingual bicultural mental health and support tech support and organize older latino mentors to assist elementary school students this helped but was not enough we are concerned there is no concrete plan for latino students and the barriers they face we need the district to honestly address these problems and our schooling by doing the following materials and directions need to be translated in spanish daily academic bilingual support for latino child flexibility and cultural knowledge and

selection of assignments a bilingual bicultural teacher to the family link program coordinated with community don go kick getting getting out kids of color geeking out kids of color and puentes reliable technology monthly monitoring the status of educational divides the discussion groups held by community and flexible scheduling that reflects family needs community would be happy to discuss each of these with time but we feel visd should be responsible to pass a plan with equity considerations not as an afterthought hope we can make a change together for the better of our students and our families the next letter by blind stains to the board administration we recognize what an enormous challenge it is to move classes online while we do not agree with the decision made specific to quarter format our students will do the best they

can with what is being provided we recognize the weekly collaboration what's working what isn't working is important for the teachers and look forward to seeing this in practice what can we expect in terms of communication from the board throughout the next couple of months we are asking for transparency early and often as we get into the year well before our second semester thank you blythe and matt danes last letter this is from david hackett dear board i have a simple ask of this board at this meeting you should debate the superintendent's proposed distance learning plan and take a vote you should ask rigorous questions and demand complete answers you shouldn't let answers slide by when they are supported only by vapid claims or word salads of educational terms if you find yourself agreeing that the

two-month gap in learning system is a good idea then go on the record and vote for it if not vote against it and demand the immediate submission of a new plan don't believe any claims it is not possible to fix this problem after all the superintendent settled on his gap and learning plan just a few days before your last meeting and he can correct it with just a few days more wisdom that comes late is better than wisdom that never comes at all so far your performance at abort as a board does not impress when i last commented directly to the sport on august 13 2020 i urge the board to exercise its oversight responsibilities and require the superintendent to submit an acceptable distance learning plan that complies with board policy directives unfortunately the special

meeting held later that day demonstrated that this board was unwilling to engage the public's concerns regarding the superintendent's decision to build automatic two-month learning gaps into his distance learning plan despite strong public commentary questioning its wisdom in short the board hid behind the serpent superintendent shirttails not even demanding that he actually answered the very few questions that board members were willing to ask given this board's poor performance at a special meeting my august 22 2020 beachcomber commentary was more pointed in calling out the sport's failure to conduct its oversight responsibilities on behalf of public parents teachers and students similar concerns were raised in the beachcomber's own editorial which noted this board's practice of disengagement from its oversight job articles pointed out how little public input or care went into the superintendent's gap and learning plan

and the frustrations faced by her our hispanic neighbors in obtaining adequate learning opportunities during this period the board also received countless emails and other communications demanding answers and board engagement despite all of this the board failed to set a special meeting to address the identified distance learning problems and instead follow the supreme allow the superintendent to run off the clock by taking no action on the public's concerns for this poor lesson in civics this board and especially as chair have earned a solid f doubtless tonight you all applaud yourselves for the various faux public processes that the district has offered since your august 13th meeting but please be advised that no one has been fooled a question and answer session to tell the public how the school district will handle distance learning is not a

process it is a lecture similarly communicating after the fact decisions to the advisory group is neither a substitute for a transparent process in order to accept the group's advice even these forums resulted in an avalanche of non-answers like we are aware of the problems in the gap in learning plan and want to assure that we are addressing them we are confident that our wonderful teachers will figure out how to make up for two months gaps in instruction the community is still waiting for an actual plan not platitudes to address the gap in learning problem that is inherent in the superintendent's poorly vetted and ultimate untimely distance learning directive one so-called justification for the gap in learning problem needs to be called out because it is both nonsensical and cynical the superintendent has claimed that the

two-month gap in learning caused by his quarter system is a feature and not a bug and that is somehow further social equity to bake in two-month gaps of instruction but we don't improve social equity by offering less instruction and building in two-month gaps that are proven to impede learning see august 13th letter by barbara gale phd discussing research on harm's off summer slide if anything kids who have a different type who have a difficult time learning or harm more not less from arbitrary two-month breaks in important subjects like math science and language claims of social equity under the circumstances near an effort to stifle public debate by attempting to shame anyone that would dare question the superintendent's social equity pronouncements there is no social equity in reducing learning opportunities and creating artificial barriers to learning

that will harm our our students the question remains when is our school board going to perform its oversight job is it possible as reported in today's seattle times the seattle school board initially rejected a proposed new start date and revised spell times because the sister administration hadn't been transparent in its communication with the board or shown sufficient evidence that it consulted with community members and consider the impact the seattle board passed the proposal only after changes were made perhaps a school board might similarly dare might similarly dare to do its job there is no better time than the present after all demonstrated mastery of the school board statutory oversight role can still salvage your civics grades but effort is required thank you for considering these points david hackett okay that is the last letter for

public comment this evening thank you everybody okay so from there we're gonna move to the superintendent report again thank you everybody for coming tonight um first of all i just want to recognize what's happening in kenosha wisconsin and once again we see incidents where we don't know everything right now i understand that but it appears that we have one more incident uh jacob blake who has suffered seven gunshot wounds in the back from a police officer and i i know that community is is an unrest and our own community here is feeling that as well and i just want to reiterate that as we move forward we're going to be very intentional about our anti-race to our our opening day on tuesday where miss joanna chukkon came and spoke to our staff on our opening

day and spoke about anti-racist instructional strategies and her own story growing up and if folks don't remember or know she is actually the daughter of cece chuck on who is our custodian at the elementary school and so i'd like to go on the record by saying that my heart and thoughts go out to the community in kenosha and the family of jacob blake but also my my uh big thank you goes out to miss joanna chacon who came in and shared her her wisdom and her experiences and and and practices that i believe our teachers and our educators are going to move forward with immediately and i think she also um as all good speakers do left us with more questions than answers so um the board if they would like to they can kind

of speak in their uh board member remarks if they if they would like to um it also says in here covet 19 update we can put this as a standing item but that's going to be a larger discussion amongst the board tonight so i will save that [Music] in terms of upcoming events you know we have two more meetings in in september and we'll be speaking about tonight about board site visits and hopefully getting an october date scheduled for a board retreat so hopefully we can kind of get our calendars out and get some things eat for that um and of course i have a lot more to share with the with the board later on in terms of kind of what's transpired over over this time i'll end my board member remarks with um

thank you to our community especially those who have reached out to our our building principles and and with concerns around um you know whatever opening plan and whatever situation is is is situated with their own individual family i appreciate that also families have reached out to me and we've been able to have conversations i think public discourse and i think relationships are built on those conversations and um i appreciate those families who have reached out to danny rock who have reached out to to greg allison who reached out to rebecca and who reached out to me and we were able to share with them maybe not always agree but hopefully we created a better understanding and strengthen our relationship around the conversation um and as i stated in my um in my commentary that was

in the in the beachcomber today i do understand that the the challenge around making all the thinking visible is is difficult sometimes for families and i fully take responsibility for that and apologize for the the fast pace in which we have to make decisions and uh and in hindsight there are there are processes that um that i've spoken with the board and our leadership team and that we know that that uh we we want to make improvements and and do better um and kind of as i said in my commentary um we're a learning organization we're going to stumble we're going to trip but we're going but we're going to get back up we're going to be resilient and and this is all you know kind of really situated around what's best for our kids

and when i walk away from either reading comments or speaking with family members who have concerns especially in difficult times i realize that we all share a common purpose which is to strengthen their their children's experiences and prepare them for for whatever their next steps are and wherever we where we leaving that conversation i always walk away knowing that we we started with that you know with being on that with that same intent and and carrying forward that same intent so i appreciate the the public engagement um i understand that that that we are not satisfying everybody and um and i would love to be able to make decisions that would so i would welcome david hackett right now if you'd like to i'll give you my public phone my phone number it's 503-702-5755 and

i would welcome a phone call from you since we haven't spoken yet so thank you very much all right and that will lead us to board member remarks and zabat you're on the top of my column this time um hi and thanks everybody for showing up tonight um it's been um it's been a wild ride i think since basically march 13th i just i wanted to thank all the parents i think we topped out at whatever was like 150 parents who showed up for um the uh high school call and they were about 85 at the elementary i mean it was just great great turnout and there were good hard questions and i thought that i thought they were good answers um knowing what we know um so but i i i appreciated what um

rebecca said which was you know and i think and slade you just kind of said it as well that's sort of like this is a learning process and um if things don't work and i think danny said like if things don't work let us know and we'll keep on figuring this out um you know you know beckett fail better so um we'll just keep doing this um but i i i really think that um public comments are crucial so i really appreciate that um and i think that's all i just wanted to say thank you to brandy for giving the tour today um that was that building is great it's really a really nice building and i kind of wish we could have brought the whole public with us to see it but they'll see

it soon so that's how i got it that's all i got all right toby that makes you next all right thank you it's good to see everyone virtually pleased to be here tonight and uh thank the public for their their tough and thoughtful comments both last meeting between the meetings and tonight from a personal perspective i know i can do better as a board member and aim to do so uh slade thank you for your comments as well and for being vulnerable as such um and as a sidebar thanks in particular to joanna chacon who was so insightful and kindly shared her her experiences with us it was really uh perhaps the the highlight of the week and quite uh thought-provoking want to recognize how hard all the staff must be working i just can't

imagine but uh it's kind of that way at the beginning of every school year it's just different this year i recognize that it takes every single person in the building uh to do that and normally the start of the school year is such a happy fun time you know full of excitement gleeful shouts and hugs and laughter and back-to-school lunch boxes and lost sweatshirts and lost and found and you know my heart is heavy to paraphrase slate a couple uh meetings ago is just different this year and i'm lamenting that we're starting online and that we have to and we will and must until it's safe to come back to school uh so uh i can't wait but we will to return and we'll miss those interpersonal uh interactions i recognize that so much of

the back to school planning has gone well and has been a derivative of a ton of work across the board staff admin superintendent community members and individuals and i'm really impressed of the amount of work and the changing time that we're able to get done and i'm i also recognize that it's guided by our values and and our norms however uh this is tarnished by our our last minute decision to shift from the semester system to the quarter system at mcmurray in high school and that uh that drove a lot of legitimate and serious community uh feedback and concerns because it was a late decision as a board we didn't have the opportunity to to really scrutinize it and understand the implications and i think we underestimated as as a school committee underestimated the uh

reaction and the concerns and then we just didn't have we painted ourselves in corner not having the time to go through that so i'm frustrated about that um and put us in a very uncomfortable position that we are responsible for i would feel more confident in the new schedule if we had engaged the community sooner had a more public discourse about it and could take actionable feedback and that's the lesson that that we're learning and uh and we're frustrated now that we did not do that so going forward i urge all of us in particular the superintendent and the administration to continue to listen to learn and to adjust accordingly as we can and i know this is more direct than i normally am but it really comes from a position of respect and that

we all have mutual goals and that we're guided by the same values and so i just want to be very plain spoken about that finally i'll finish with a quote or paraphrase from winston churchill who defines success as the ability to move from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm so i know i can help bring enthusiasm and continue to promote a learning environment which we're in now so i thanks for that opportunity to put that out there toby well said appreciate your candor and bob you're up uh i don't have any remarks all right uh well i'll finish with my remarks um because i think a lot about what we're doing remember too what was that spring is here as well i believe oh i'm sorry spring you're not seeing you in my

column spring go ahead um i was just working through i've been having tech issues all day long sorry going back between laptops and phones so anyway uh thank you so you know i think i'm just really using this opportunity to try to listen and take in all of the feedback and really reflect and i i really deeply appreciate how invested our parents are and community members and how much they care and how passionately they we all advocate for our kids um for our schools so i i'm just listening and trying to take it all into consideration to see where as my fellow board directors you were saying where can we personally make improvements where there's room for growth but also i really want to say again with that balanced view of not everything is you

know in this crisis i do really recognize um the good work and value all of the time and effort that has gone into coming up with this school return plan reopening while very imperfect in so many ways it was done as carefully and thoughtfully um as could be given the circumstances so not sure i'm adding anything new there but that's that's where i i am right now um and i felt so happy just have to echo being able to be part of the um the kickoff event with the teachers and school staff the there was just such positive energy there and i felt like it was a really wonderful way to um carry forward or the theme that i keep it speaks to me so much which is equity and excellence um and i think

that is really what came through at the kickoff event um so i i feel really appreciative of that and joanna um chacon for sharing her story and for the wisdom of our administrators for for bringing her into um to that event so that's it back to you reagan all right thanks spring um so i guess my my thoughts for the week are um gratitude for all of the work that's gone into the reopening plan it's not one person's reopening plan it's been a team effort it's involved every aspect of the school staff and i think we've developed the best plan for a set of sound reasons to try at the opening and i think that uh you know there's been a lot of questioning about why why don't we why don't we wait why don't

we engage in even more public engagement why don't we delay the start of school so that we can do more surveys or different kind of surveys or have additional public meetings um and i think my own answer to that as a parent of two students at the high school as well as a board member is is uh waiting waiting doesn't educate students and the school district is in the business of educating students waiting doesn't help students and families find their way forward from here to a new set of whatever normal is going to be for a while into this remote plan and waiting to me doesn't really add value because i don't think the perfect reopening plan is going to materialize in the next week or two from somewhere all the school districts in the

region are struggling with these same challenges and time constraints and mandates from the department of education and department of health so i think each district is is making its best selection based on the experience of its staff and its guiding principles and i think that's what we've done as well and i think we're prepared um i think our teachers and staff have reworked the spring plan into a whole new 2.0 version i think you're going to find it a lot more engaging and hopefully worked out a lot of the kinks and we have teachers who are eager to re-engage with students you know that's what teachers do they want they want to get together their students they've worked out this new plan and they're eager to test drive it and re-engage students in a richer

learning platform than what we had in the spring so i think by doing so next week by starting we will be getting away from some of this anxiety about what might happen what might happen on the quarter system what might happen if someone falls through a crack what might happen if the student can't engaged or connected i think we'll be able to work with what is happening and adjust to it in real time um which i think will help really ease a lot of this anxiety and debate which is well justified i i can't say i don't have a lot of anxiety as a parent myself but i do think that when we're actually doing it we'll be able to work in real time with it and respond and if the quarter system turns out

to not work for a majority people we're going to change it but you know we're going to adapt based on what is actually happening and not be wondering what might be happening so i'll appreciate starting for those reasons um and lastly uh we want to be helping kids you know we're concerned about their learning of course but we're also concerned about their social emotional and having this some kind of plan and normalcy put back into their lives even though it will look different than it was when we could all attend the buildings [Music] i think that's very important to get back into a routine of some kind so i think that our opening will help us do that and i just want to again thank our staff and our leadership for your creativity for your

courage and for your inspiring public service during these extremely challenging times and i know that you know as a team as a community um we're nimble we're creative we're going to be able to make this work for our students and i'm excited to get working on the actual problem and take it out of the theoretical realm and and put it on the ground and start helping kids and start making this thing work for however long we're required to make it work this way until we can go back to being together in person so that's that's all for me tonight and with that we will go right to the budget update with k adams good evening everybody pull up the covid um spreadsheet for me okay hello slay what'd you like here's my background i put

cancun behind me i know good for you good for you dreaming of going on vacation one of these days okay is jody pulling it up she's trying to yes okay this is all going to be as of um july 31st i will always get these done after the end of the month so we'll have the most current all the monthly expenditures so i can compare one month to another the first bit as you see is the actual expenditures that we've had due to covid it's at 89 790 um these are increasing weekly due to the needs of these families and just the things we have to purchase the extra cleaning supplies so that number will be increasing the next group of numbers is our revenue lost food service currently is at almost 144 thousand dollars

we have lost in food service revenue since march um we still have one more month of salaries to pay so that will increase and that will continue decrease because i don't believe we're going to have the in in service um meals fed so we'll see how that goes at you know as the year progresses um we had a great community this year that donated almost forty thousand dollars for our food service so we could continue to feed all members of a family and that is unbelievable that as community step up and give that much money it is so supportive and the families used it greatly during our springtime and then we stepped up and let the you know the food bank come into our building and continue that through the summer to help all the

families so i think we've done a great community um support during the during this pandemic and i hope we can continue all the way through fall and until life can come back to normal right then we have um our savings what we have saved since in our expenditures because of the closure we've saved over i'm gonna just push the pause button uh bob raised his hand thank you oh sorry bob uh uh the adult meals um explained how that we provided them was a was there was a cash basis or was it donated how does that work it was the adult meals um we were supposed to charge five dollars for every adult meal we gave out that was a state mandate we decided not to do that we just decided to give it out

at no charge so we use the donation dollars to help those families and feed the adults in those families too who made that decision um it was between lisa and and i think slade i think you had a little input in there we wanted to make sure the whole family was whole there and fed not just the students so it was not uh free reduced kids it was any any family is that correct any family because because of people losing their jobs we didn't have new free and reduced information and real they have to file and then we have to get the application then we have to put it in we didn't want to deny anybody okay thank you you're welcome um the next is the reduction in expenditures we saved over 50 000 in

sub-cost then utilities um we've saved almost 60 000 in utilities since the closure the other is supplies because we're not having all those little kids in the um schools and saved contracted services like wascowitz and exploratory week so we've saved over 160 000 in in our expenditures so next part is our cares act we only received 121 979 and the state has warned that's probably all the money we're going to get matt and i are looking at if we want to use it for the 1920 school year to re to build our fund balance up or do we really want to save that money and use it in the 2021 school year for all the extra costs we have coming up all the hot spots we're providing to families any additional meal cost maybe extra

loss in revenue with food service so that's something we have until september 15th to decide because that's when i'll have to claim the money if we want to post it back and then our net loss if you take the cares in really the savings and then if you take in um the grant if i were to use the charisma only about 9 000 in between all the different categories any questions thank you uh i have a question uh near the top there was a um in our expenditures there was a district district fees or something there we go uh districts central support what uh falls into that category district support is items that were purchased at at the district level not just for a building also it was to help pay for a custodian to

cover the two three because four custodians that were out due to medical that could not work during that time because that's a that was part of the cares act because that custodian would not have been working if those other custodians were here in toby this is matt sullivan this those things could also be such as the plexiglas we're purchasing for offices for shields uh those types of supplies go in there also okay just because it was a larger number i was in preparing for the meeting tonight it's like for what's in there so that that helps me understand thank you yeah one of the things that we're starting that we're hearing as well is that if the federal government does pass any uh any further relief then if that money gets to this if that

money does get to the state um what case speaking are about is that there's all indications right now that tell us that those monies will be released to districts that those monies will be kept at the state level um and not released to districts now we're going to obviously superintendents in the region and statewide are going to mount a very vigorous campaign to get those funds distributed to to districts but because of the projected shortfall statewide that's why i think we're we're preparing ourselves that if we do see legislation passed or a new relief bill passed we're not going to be overly optimistic that we're going to see more care thanks kay you're welcome have a good night bye hey since since you're here i just want to say thank you uh k is earned

her five-year service pin and quite frankly i can't do it without her she's been outstanding to work with and one of the best people i've ever had the chance to meet so thank you kay well thank you congratulations thank you so much okay your your charts are always so boring no it's been great working for the district i have totally enjoyed it matt's an awesome executive director i've worked for about five and he's probably one of the best ones i've ever worked for he's not that good plus we get along we're both very proactive and getting things done early which works great so thank you all it's been a wonderful so good night good night thanks kay matt you heard she said probably right okay i'm going to get back on and say is the

best executive [Laughter] i'm still here we're going to pivot from k to matt then for our operations yeah provided to you is our normal monthly financial report this happens to be through the end of july so about 91 almost 92 percent of our fiscal year we're 11 out of 12 months uh expenditures coming about 90.6 a little bit under as we suspected as you saw previously with kate's presentation things he just worked and haven't been paying for because there's been no occupancy in our buildings there's a lot of lot due to that revenues are about 89.6 percent and of course it's a little bit under where we should be because once again how the state provides to us what we call apportionment but revenue from the state to support our school operations and in may

you know they give us about five percent and then june we see six percent and then of course at year end uh for us which is the start of their new fiscal year the state new fiscal year we're seeing 12 and a half percent so a huge bump and jump if you notice that in revenue line in regard to state apportionment you see this incredible bump from a june to july a million dollars to 2.1 million and that's that 12.5 percent that they give us in july and then what you'll also notice is come august once i present that next month there's 10 more increase in that revenue so you'll see this jump towards your end um otherwise everything looks fairly good it's right where we should be right where we're tracking and as we

thought and we've heard from across the board whether it be the assessor's office to other school districts to ospi uh the year end would be normal fall would be relatively normal with apportionment with an eye on calendar year 2021 and we'll see what happens at that point any questions i might have i have a couple absolutely um i get this is 20 21 questions so um don't make predictions especially about the future matt so could you talk a little bit i i still don't think i understand um first question is transportation is it going to be based on actual ridership in 2021 and then secondly could you talk a little bit about enrollment what we know today and if you could extrapolate what we know today into how you think it's going to roll out

for the 2021 or i'm sorry 20 20 20 21 budget sure in regard to transportation um like many things like enrollment also we aren't you know paid if you will from the state until uh january for enrollment in february for transportation uh transportation specifically february first we have what we call stars report it's an acronym for was its uh student transportation allocation reporting system um and so the fall is they will give us uh transportation dollars based on budget if you will but we better have kids in seats physically and buses come february or the state will recollect money given to us we receive about almost eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars regarding our ridership from the state if we were to use that in the fall and we had no kids in seats and

buses come february first they would collect that money back but we are not going to use that money correct we are not using that money in the fall since we are distance learning that we have no kids in buses and then the enrollment um i would probably defer to slade in regard to enrollment at this point it's anecdotal but we're seeing um you know obviously less students enrolled across the district i don't think we have a specific hard number at this point uh but until we see the whites of their eyes if you will virtually at this point i'm not comfortable throwing a number out there as to what enrollment uh deficit will be in but we we we will most likely be an enrollment deficit you have slay do you have any sense at

all for are we talking 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 or 80 or uh i think we're talking somewhere between 30 and 50. okay so that would be again we've seen some students grow up but we've also seen some students come in um we've seen some students who originally wanted to be in family link and were able to get in family link we saw some students be on a waiting list for family link they may you know they may come back um we're we're making the phone calls um you know every day to families to to figure out what what you know what their intent is and if they have questions so but it is a um you know right now we'll start of next week our account day is going to be on

friday so we'll start the four days account month tuesday wednesday thursday we just need a student to attend you know one of those days in order to to count so it does give us some not um some time to follow up with each family that that it may be currently enrolled but we don't see them we're currently working through an attendance plan um teachers will be taking attendance there's a lot of flexibility because they can take it whether it's synchronous or asynchronous they'll be taking attendance through skyward and students use the clever portal to access all their google classroom or seesaw or other materials google portal has an analytic that will actually help us identify students who aren't you know engaged who aren't signing in going to the portal to to get on their meets

and access their classrooms um so we have some tools to to help us track that and it'll be you know next week there's gonna be a lot of all hands on deck in terms of contacting and connecting with parents and families to have a better understanding of of what's happening um you know it is a regional um kind of a circumstance uh we're we're i'd say we're kind of right on par with what i'm hearing and um so it's it's we're gonna again do our best to capture and and keep um i think we've seen more coming back right now uh after our after our q and a sessions and after parents have had opportunities to have discussions with with administrators but that's accurate that i i'm going to be hesitant to make a prediction

um i'm i'm gonna but i'm not gonna be over overly optimistic either so i'm gonna say 30 to 50 and we'll we'll look forward to what that actually looks like next week and and i respect that i i guess so so could you i know i'm jumping ahead a little here a little bit but if we were to require a budget adjustment how would that when would that occur and when would that occur if i mean if it's adjustment what do you if it's 50 if it's 50 uh 50 kids you got a half million dollar hole in your budget um what's the process by which that happens and when would you know well obviously you know when the kids aren't showing but um how would that happen procedurally for this uh school district yeah

i think um you know we would you know we're gonna kind of go into a budget review process we're gonna have you know special meetings we're gonna have probably you know engage the budget advisory board again to to take a look at um you know to take a look at our budget um this is what we this is what we talked about last spring um in terms of what is what does protection look like um and so uh yeah there's there'll just be lots of questions that we'll have to dig deep into and and better understand and i don't we won't have a lot of dials to turn be quite frank we are running pretty lean and so i'm anticipating that wherever we end year end that we would probably see a lower fund balance

that would probably be the most significant impact we'd probably see a lower fund balance for the for the following to start to begin the following year i see more fun ahead for all of us sorry for the sarcasm no i do like that we have a process that we've established and used consistently over the last about three years and i think that what i just heard you say slate is that's the appropriate process in which we would evaluate any changes and adjustments in the budget and that's a fairly good way to to engage multiple stakeholders in the process all along i think that's worked well as well as it could be because it's never great news right but i like that we've established that process and have something that we can follow going forward yeah

and that process hasn't been been perfect over the last two years but we've improved on it and we do feel that the decisions that we make are better much better decisions with that with that feedback than have we been making them kind of isolated and alone in the district office so i appreciate that group tremendously and um yeah i'd add that um the group is is is really important and um and i and i get the group sometimes gets frustrated because they feel like they put input that they're adding things in and then it seems like it does not get hurt they don't get heard and so i'm i'm hearing that you know i'm sort of i'm very aware of that feeling right now um so i'm i'm thinking that um you know it's crucial

for that group to come together um and really be able to see the landscape of what's happening and anything that might be coming up because you know the ma i feel like the the motto of this of this board is no surprises and that would apply to that group so i would add that you know every school district in the state is going to be in the same boat that we are um i don't know if the legislature will be able to do anything but we're all going to be singing from the same sheet of music in regard to enrollment so we're not getting any new money from the legislature yep i would agree with you bob i know we've we've gotten we've gotten in our share yes big sounds like the bat phone okay

any other questions for matt thank you matt thank you okay that brings us to discussion item with the 20 20 21 school opening and slade's lead us through this sure so um uh the reopen you know the there's there's so much here so uh and probably details may may weave with each other but i'll try to state the topics but i um and as always happens with the uh with the day-to-day information daily um i'll probably have i'll share some other items as well um but the reopening team met and and the bet i you know i wanted to kind of point to to you as as well uh because we're part you know you're part of that reopening team and um you know we in that reopening team meeting we we came together to

kind of check uh on basis and get and get more get more feedback but for me what's what's important right now for that reopening team is we have some focus groups that are going to be uh put in place and those focus groups are going to be working on specifically are going to be instrumental and key for us kind of progress monitoring our plan so we're going to have a specific focus group who's going to who's going to work on you kind of utilize the talent of the reopening team and put together some really strong survey tools so that when we you know when we go out and we you know kind of check in on how we're doing and how our reopening plan is doing that well we're going to have so probably more

sophistication to that data and i'm excited about bringing in people from that team to be on a kind of a a survey planning focus group we're also going to be while we are in distance learning there's going to be a focus group that's specifically going to to help plan and advise on our hybrid models and so if you remember a long time ago on a faraway land uh called fashion island school district on june 19th we you know we put together some ideas about what hybrid learning might look like what uh an ab model might look like what a four-day model might look like but that plan points to potential changes and we really want to take advantage of the reopening team and the expertise on that team and to collaborate with administration and really

take another look at what those models are might look like and either affirm or redesign or recreate um again in collaboration and partnership with our community uh partners including community dot including vyfs so that we can build a stronger model and now we have some time uh fortunate or unfortunate unfortunately to take to take advantage of and so there will be a focus group specifically for the hybrid uh modeling group there also be a focus group on i'm calling outdoor learning or outdoor you know kind of spaces we already have teachers engaged with fashom be prepared and if you don't know already i spoke with rick wallace a few days ago and they're currently designing or trying to work on a design for eight classrooms at the uh chautauqua outside classrooms do you want to

say again who rick wallace is uh what what's his title it's about he's a guy uh head honcho yeah it feels to me i was like he's in charge he is he yeah he's in charge he's in charge of the emergency operations center right and i just want to make sure everybody knows that because sometimes people don't know who they are that's good that's good to know he and vicky uh you know kind of our are our co-conspirators to keep our islands safe but working with you know margie at the elementary school and other and rebecca and other other school other staff to to specifically provide some some spaces but then this focus group will then kind of take we'll kind of expand into what what could we what could we take advantage of instructionally

speaking what kind of partnerships what kind of pd hopefully to kind of strengthen that that that progress and and what might that look like so uh those are kind of the the at least for me the key takeaways of the reopening team it was a lot of updating i you know i think it's important to use the reopening team also as a you know kind of here's the progress what do you think about the progress do you have any other you know considerations or thoughts ideas around that um it's about what i don't we could i could i feel like with all these bullets we could probably spend hours and hours but i want to so i want to make sure i'm giving you the information that is most valuable to you um so at

any time if you feel like move on slide let me know but it's a bit what takeaways do you have from the reopening team um i would uh and i i i would just add that i think what's great about that team is that they are involved in a lot of different communities and so when we have our conversation about what's going on that they go out and talk to their own teams or their out to their communities and it's a great um it's just another it's another good way to get information out um and sort of organically which so i it's sort of i don't that wasn't the main reason to do it obviously but it's a it's a nice um benefit to it and i just really appreciate the the thoughtfulness um that

goes into it so i yeah and i it'll be interesting we got a lot of work a lot of work ahead of us yeah can you remind us um how many parents are part of the reopening team oh gosh you know it's hard i know because a lot of people have dual roles so i i would say how many people are on that team slave like 50 is like we're at 62 i think or 61. so my guess would be like there are maybe 15 people who are just straight-up parents um because then there are people who are involved in other organizations that are working with the school but they're also parents or they are teachers and they're also parents or there's um you know so it's it's a lot of parents and some people

have a diverse group of parents like you have parents of kids with who are have ieps and parents of kids who are in ap or highly capable you know is do we have a good representation i i think it i i think it probably could be more encompassing but i um it's hard to to ask like okay who has an ap student um who has a student that receives special services we could probably survey that group but um and it's a self-selected group as well yeah so but you know anybody that's asked i've always accepted them i haven't really turned anybody away per se so yeah but it's a good it's a it's a totally valid question last spring yeah yeah rick um i i think you probably covered these in one form or another

i just wanted to this is the way i'm thinking of it um so uh one of the things i've seen in the the parents a lot of the email is sort of a what's working session what's not working session with with parents um is that something you envisioned so that we can sort of have kind of almost real time um discussion with our our community of learners yeah i'd like to i'd like to do uh workshops okay uh around that and so you know part of the focus group the reopening team is that my vision would be that they would be kind of and they would say like this we're losing you slade goes in i'm in charge yeah yeah your bandwidth is going down there you're back and you're back okay second question slade

and i think you're planning on doing this anyways but could we have uh i i again i expect you're doing this um regular like a standing item on the agenda or in your remarks with sort of a standardized reporting on um there are several issues that come to mind and i think all all of us have our our own pet issues or our own pet concerns um you like things like mental health supports budget connectivity and tutoring those are a few that come to my mind that i would love to hear about on a regular basis and if we i don't know if you have metrics for reporting on them but uh that's just my my thoughts at this time sure i think what would can you hear me now yeah okay i think will

be helpful for me is maybe to send out something to the board cool of that because again there's uh there's an infinite amount of details that i got so you want to just include that in the friday letter that you do or something separate bob i was thinking you know it's because either way but i think that the advantage of doing an abort session is that there's more trans you know the public can watch and all that stuff but um i'm i don't have strong feelings either way reagan i just there are some you know the connectivity is one i want to track and really understand um and then mental health is something i don't know how you report on that but these are um just a couple issues i'm particularly concerned about or interested

in i should say i think we're gonna have an ongoing um you know opening and covid report and so i think those items can just be encompassed in that during the board meetings yep yeah that would be great i i would vote for that because i if it gets put into the friday letter we're the only ones who see that and i know the public would be really interested to hear what you know happens going i agree yep can i ask another question bob were you done with your questions yes yes thank you um i'm sorry i'm i'm trying to track everything so pardon me if i missed something but i was recalling that question that was i think a really important one raised by one of our parents i think live asking um how

we would sort of what was that process for um being able to evaluate when we were making adjustments you know and i i think like bob's saying there's certain maybe there's certain things we want to really be monitoring whether that's mental health or what you have you but you know what are or do we have some sort of benchmarks or criteria that we'll be able to really look at you know more surveys um you know attendance of our students you know there's engagement but just sort of like do we have a good sense of how we will be getting more getting feedback from students from parents how it's going where we're going to need to make adjustments other than kind of feeling our way through it i'm sure you do but i just need a

reminder i think about what that might look like no no we don't actually right now that's the we're focused on opening on monday and tuesday so uh it hasn't it's not that we haven't had that discussion um we know that we need to come back together and we know we need to have you know staff engaged in that process um and so you really the the structures that i see in place to to to really zero down on those details uh could be you know could really come from the reopening team and because that is a group that is really well represented across uh you know staff and and the community so um but we are we will be looking at things no matter what like attendance um you know we'll be looking at the

you know at the some of those metrics um that tells us something but not everything for sure i think there's a i think there's uh when we get when we think about how we're gonna this assessment in real time i think we want to be proactive about it as much as possible rather than assume no news is good news or wait for people to send complaint letters i think we need to have people within the district system who are reaching out proactively to contact some of these um especially know the the iep special ed students and the communities of color students and the you know the high cap and and just i think we need to have an active touch especially on the first month or two as we get it going um so that

we're not just passively receiving information or not receiving information but actively as much as possible seeking out information whether we do that with a survey or or phone calls or i don't know what the best way to do that the most feasible way to do that is but i don't want to i don't want to sit and think that everything must be going fine because we're not hearing a lot i think we need to be sure that we're we're seeking out feedback as much as waiting to receive it yeah yeah that's agreed no no argument there okay let you move along um i'll just let you know um so latino uh community outreach and advocacy so um we put some systems in place and i met last monday with with our parent leaders and the

other leaders of community dot and we met for an hour and a half and had a great discussion and sally was was there and i met a new a new member well new to me her name is nicole and she's from puente base who who works with our latino community and and mental health supports and so that i mean he was was was was productive and you know sally had already shared with me uh the interests of the latino community and in terms of tech supports and tutoring and culturally relevant curriculum translation services uh and someone buy cultural and bilingual family link thomas did get back to me and they do have that capacity they do have a staff that can work with um uh bilingual families who are all not really who is bilingual

and can work with latino families um and you know we are right now there's there's no um you know our focus right now is our primary focus is around access kind of what bob is talking about and we have a a really i want to just highlight and welcome to two members who are you know kind of expanding roles in in the district you may know sarah hamill she is going to be coordinating ell services uh k-8 and then we have sarah sullivan who's going to be coordinating services at the high school and sarah may also have some role with vyfs as well because if you remember mariela blanco was you contracted through vyfs and who served a tremendous amount of our families i don't want to overlook the value uh and and how she's

in her service um i know that she's moved on to another role and so i met with the ed the new ed jenny johnson at byfs and shared with her some of my you know initial conversations with community.com contacted vyfs and so i'm hoping that we'll see more coordination and collaboration around community needs and services and the district will actually have a better idea on how to support but right now we're focused on access the chautauqua we have a list of families hot spots will be going um you know into those delivery bags um we're hopefully going to get the same list uh we've been calling families leaving messages there's oftentimes challenges uh in communication but we are putting forward significant efforts and um well uh that you know and we'll we'll get families what

they need as much as as much as we possibly can right now and so um we'll know more about you know the middle school and high school hopefully tomorrow in terms of a list but as we saw last year we were able to give hot spots but it didn't mean that um that they were that they were able to be used and so it wasn't for the fault of the hot spot uh it's just we need to we need someone to follow up with support and so one of the things that byfs um that we were you know speaking about was and what mariella did often was she took the role kind of like a case manager and so what would it look like if we had some someone who was bilingual who was you

know integrated in and part of the community team or part of the by fest team who could provide some of those follow-up services it's also important to note that when i was with community we kind of all recognize that um we would like some we would like individual tutoring to happen but that takes the coordinator and we're prepared to to put in a coordinator but um finding bilingual staff or finding by you know i think they're out there we just need to to find them and who could help us coordinate uh tutoring and that might be someone also that is through um you know vyfs so um part of the batch on schools foundation and and supporting racial equity some of that funding does go to vyfs to to help support those uh advocacy and

efforts so um but right now we are again kind of our first our our first job is getting access and then the second job is following up with instructional support translation support um and and really just being more more more uh more integrated with with with community dodd and and you know the services that byfs supports so i'm very optimistic um you know community dot also has a member her name is michelle herrera and she's done just wonderful things um with the latino community and so in terms of providing tech support and you know tech classes um and so it's it's really going to be a lot about follow-up um i'm planning on meeting with them twice a month that's what we agreed on at our meeting but honestly more important than me and what

i share with them is that sarah hamill really needs to to become you know kind of integrated into their work and we'd like to see more collaboration um you know back and forth uh there's a lot of great ideas from from those parents and we want to make sure that we are hearing them and putting them into practice can i interrupt you quickly i appreciated your comments very much um all of them um great job uh and i'm not usually somebody who i typically jealously guard the role of what the school district does and what it does not do and child care isn't typically something we do do but it is increasingly apparent that child care is an access issue could you talk a little bit about what jody's doing and what the district is

doing um to sort of sounds like we're we're we're leading and collaborating but um trying to put the right people in the room yeah before i jump to child care um can i just questions around our our uh latino advocacy supports and just let the board where to um oh spring you're about to check in so i was about to share that you are going to be kind of more of a partner in this work with me as well go ahead sabet yes can i ask my quick question now about um zoom pro oh yes thanks so um you know as the district you know kind of starts to take a look and examine our practices this is pretty natural that we want to figure out how to do um basically a translated virtual meeting

and so zoom pro does appear to have that service and what's also great is that i know um you know we have in terms of our community um we have a you know the largest group is is our latino community in terms of our non-english speakers or non-native english speakers and so but we do have mandarin speakers we do have syrian so there's quite a few other languages and we'd like to provide as much access as possible and so my my goal is to have you know kind of our board meetings available for translation so for whoever whatever language you want you'd be able to dial in and if you if you go on google or on youtube and look at zoom pro and what that looks like it's basically you know the the end

user puts in what language they want and it's on demand and then you can they hear 80 in their home language and then they hear 20 volume of the actual meeting that's taking place and apparently that proves to be kind of an effective way to understand what's happening at the meeting and then if they need to ask questions that person can then you know ask a question as well so so it's simultaneous simultaneous exactly right can we afford it i'm sure we no we can't afford anything right now but yes we're going better better well we have some dedicated funds for for these you know types of these services and supports and we're going to use them great i'm glad to hear that that was that was sort of related to my question if i

could jump on which is when you know i think that that question comes up quite often um in you know translation services and and trying to have all the events have a translator present and all the you know the school materials that's come up where where does that come out of our budget i mean do we with sort of basic education funding it's not part of it correct no so where are we coming up with the money to do that very important try to provide that very important service i would call it probably local funds okay okay i think that's just important to understand um but we are making that a priority to try to yeah okay and i i had already told slade this just really quickly um and zebet knows but we're having

a like a community-wide parent meeting um for parents and friends for racial equity um and then we're gonna try to capture as many questions and concerns and priorities um from all parents who are invested in anti-racism work and um racial equity and education and then be able to bring that to the very first district-wide meeting that's coming up that slade has scheduled all our meetings um out um for the next school year so i'm feeling really positive about that and and thankful to slate for getting that all going um and look i'm sure he'll keep reporting in about all of that but just a side sidebar on what we're up to spring do you know um uh how many of our latino community members are gonna be part of that meeting that you're gonna that

friends and family yeah that's um so there's definitely people who are on our who are in the committee who are um bilingual which is really nice um so i think we're gonna i know we're gonna make every effort to try to extend that invitation and reach out and um one-on-one invitations and i'm um i don't maybe if you want to help me connect with cynthia ramos i i don't know her very personally she's come to some of the racial equity meetings right with the district yes she okay good so i probably met her once or twice she's part of the reopening team too she is so um but thank you for mentioning that because would be really important if we could have a translator and bring invite those families and have them be there um

so yeah stay tuned yeah yeah i'll help out but i can and then bob your question was sorry we'll put it back sorry you're mute most people like me that way um what uh it was a poorly formed question but could you talk a little bit about how we are engaging to to the extent we are capable of uh ensuring child care for those who need it okay right exactly um and so yeah so jody's now kind of taken on a new role as our you know kind of community cloud care liaison we are no longer providing funding we were never funded for but we're no longer providing funding for or trying to support the actual existence of a child care that is our district child care we partnered you know over the closure with

bash on kids and and put some financial resources toward that part of the governor's proclamation and mandate that as it was earlier but we are tasked with trying to provide enough as much coordination and support and resources or access to those resources as much as possible so um jody you know is is has been reaching out and putting together putting babies basically aggregating information um and if you saw the article in the beachcomber today i don't know if you did or not but um you know most most uh um organizations on the island who are offering child care have significant wait lists um that would not that does um and if again our community doesn't understand you know kind of why is child care able to bring back students but the school isn't that's that's

usually a question that i do get asked and they are operating under uh separate guidelines they're not really i would say more stringent they can have 22 students or 22 children back at a time but the reason why they're giving even more allowances they've had time over the last summer and over spring to demonstrate that if they follow the same you know these mitigation practices and strategies um and they've had very low incidence of disease activity so um we may get to a point where some of that learning and that that research you know kind of bleeds over into the school system but again these are these organizations you have 80 20 you know much fewer students and there's also the assumption that if schools were to open up um that because you know we're

a much larger organization the the risk for disease activity significantly increasing is much greater obviously in our large organizations and so in a nutshell we aren't able to provide child care um that's not the role like like you said of the of the school districts some districts who have already child care continue with those child care programs but most districts typically don't have a child care program and will not be and we are we are one of them too that i take it the constraint is not space so much as adult providers correct certificate providers is that the the constraint on vashon island yes they're just there they i've heard vashon island called a a childcare desert there are some providers but we there aren't very many of them so okay because we got space

yeah what's happening with um cam south yeah uh rick taylor and carrie i can carry i think i have your first name correct i apologize um they are bringing back um you know groups of 22 and they have outdoor pavilions and i think i heard from rick that they want to try to bring back um you know up to 100 students don't please don't quote me on that um all together but um obviously following the guidelines and but what's great about um camp self is that they're offering these opportunities for for younger students k5 and then some afternoons for middle schoolers but they're offering kind of a structured a time that's structured around the school schedule and so rick uh collaborated with with rebecca and worked out a schedule where they will have some online

supports because they have good connectivity out there apparently they're gonna have some online support so students can engage in in the instructional part of their day and then the afternoon um if they if need be still do the kind of um specialist time uh and then maybe connecting with teachers by their office hours but they're also doing some tiny typical camp programming so and aren't they offering like a sighting scale or subsidies or scholarships yes they're they're right they're they're offering it on a sliding scale my understanding though is that they're i don't know if they're i talked with one parent um while we were both getting some syrian food and she said that that they also have a waiting list now so but i don't know i don't know how they're kind of how

they're how they're growing the program if they want to expand it and and provide it for more for more um families so that's what they said on facebook on facebook they commented that um if they had enough families they would try to expand the program right yeah he said he has the outdoor pavilions so they have they have significant facilities there to you know to do what they they would like to do so but they've been they've been great partners in terms of um you know and i think they just they kind of pivoted in a short time to make this happen so i really appreciate what they what they're offering there for our families um so it's just special education in 504 services i'm going to kind of go down um not a whole

lot to update there uh in terms of i think i've shared this sometimes i feel like i've shared things with multiple multiple groups so please apologize if i've shared with you already or had a conversation with you but the first week of school is going to be focused on our case managers knowing who our students uh well have already identified our students who they feel will be our highest need students and may not respond well with remote learn with distance learning and so the priority is to have those parents and those families come in and to an iep setting and for the case manager and those you know can all the stakeholders in the iep would then determine what level what kind of services would be appropriate um and the idea is kind of a

controlled phase in of beginning with one-on-one in-person services for those students again who are who are identified and and then perhaps later on expanding it to small groups um but it's really critical uh catherine has a a rubric that the team will work through in terms of you know the safety of staff and the safety of students um in order to to do to offer those services in a safer way um and so uh but that you know we're we may see some input some in-person one-on-one services being delivered as early as the second week so but again that's all dependent on the iep team there's a there's a larger process there um and it's not you know a policy per se that i make or the these are we're obligated to provide a free

and appropriate education to to the to our students and we're going to make sure that we do so so but it's i really don't have a lot of influence on those decisions because those are iep team decisions with the parents the staff and the and the case manager imagine there's some very some nuances related to ppe um you know and then other items around keeping the building and folks physically safe right um i'm sorry toby were you down there um i guess my concern is i think some of that some of that work with identifying students that might need to come in in person earlier and reevaluating their needs is going to mean re-evaluating their ieps and i'm concerned about the potential time delays there between being able to actually deliver services and having to

reevaluate and go through the paperwork process of the ieps and sometimes that creates a kind of lengthy delay before things can really begin to happen on the ground based on you know whatever is recommended in the learning plan so i'm not quite sure about how best to address that or whether catherine's got the resources she needs to work through that paperwork aspect as rapidly as possible so that we're not into like the second quarter before you know we're really servicing kids that have needs identified in the first few weeks of school you're right i recognize i'm i'm with you on that there's you know there's kind of three types of iep meetings long ones really long ones and then really really long ones because of the bureaucracy and the paperwork involved and you can definitely

sometimes feel like we are trapped within a system that's not directly you know positive and positively impacting the family and the student so i i do understand that um i know that this is more i don't wanna i can't put words into the iep team's mouth and what works for you knows what's gonna what each iep is gonna look like i'm anticipating more of a desk review of the you know of the iep um these aren't full these aren't full evaluations it's not gonna require an evaluation it's basically you're looking at um you're kind of basically uh we have information from the spring and so um we can we can take a quick look at at current levels and then make determination from there and then you know use the tool the rubric tool to

determine what you know kind of how to bring back a student if that if we did if they determined that a student would benefit great you know uh more or that distance loading wouldn't work and so when i hear catherine talking about bringing students back as early as the second week that indicates to me um not so much an expedited process because that can um that that may send the wrong message to to folks who are involved in that decision-making um it's not gonna be any less thorough but i don't believe it's that it requires a full evaluation okay i just want to be really sensitive since that that group suffered um probably most greatly in the spring with with the sudden switch to the online learning i just wanna try to avoid any further

delays and and really meeting them where they are and getting them engaged and caught up and to the most extent we can with expediting the paperwork um let's let's do that tonight sounds like you're sensitive to that as well and and and i think that you know from what and i get i see the thumbs up from colby down there from what i've heard that's that that is a team's interest um it's it's different in each building because different staff have different needs as well um and different students have different needs and so um but i i feel very confident about the system that catherine's put in place she's had conversations with with staff in each building and and and have a plan to move forward so okay thank you yeah absolutely um mental health

supports and so um i'll speak broadly first um we do have if i believe the board is aware but you know the relationship with bashan youth and family services is is is a is a great relationship as you know they they lease our buildings they they they they use our space for vacheron kids and what the public may not know is the use of that space the least of our building is uh mostly for in-kind services and so um you know so they provide and mata is currently actually um you're kind of renegotiating what that looks like but they currently provide in-kind services for for for uh supports for individual families and our and our parents we're gonna be expanding those services to to group uh counseling services in the middle school in the high

school um and you know it also we have uh you know community connection with with bachelor youth and family services and that should not be prepared because september is a suicide prevention month and so there's a lot of collaboration happening there um we we have our grants from psesd um to provide mental health supports at the at the middle in high school but each school what i'm really proud of at each school is that they have a really strong multi-tiered system of support so they have tier 1 tier 2 and tier 3 services and strong counseling staff in each building who who have systems to identify students this year's part of the template um we're required part of the requirement one of the requirements of the template is to have universal screeners in place at

each building both for social emotional mental health well-being but also for academics and at each building we begin to identify what those screeners are the middle and high school are able to use the expert screener from the cpwi grant please don't ask me what that stands for bob um but uh but that that screener is actually uh is available for for six through twelve students and it's online so it's it's gonna be a great tool to help us identify um you know students who may be needing extra support but you know when i reached out to christina i said can you help me understand the mental health supports in your building i mean you she sent me you know two emails like this long about the kind of the the both the individual uh your

kind of spotlighting that that she has with students they have their basically their student support system there and um she does referrals she does case management and you know if you don't remember when she came in you know the counselors presented i believe it was last year or was it maybe the year before but they're very engaged and know who their students and their families are but i think with the help of these screeners in place it'll strengthen our kind of our our ability to to intervene at a much earlier place so do you have other kind of questions around mental health or are there things that are in particular about mental health that you have a question about that if i don't know right now i could go i can find out toby is

the neighbor care facility at the ashland high school going to open oh yes sorry uh neighbor cares it's written right there yes neighborhood is open is open right now on a limited basis and then um as their as as disease activity probably decreases they'll be able to provide more services okay not to mention they probably have flu shots available yes everybody please go get your flu shot even though i didn't use mine last year i'm gonna get another one this year okay you should get two this year toby um i wanted to also um acknowledge the role that teachers are going to have to be playing in mental health because they're the ones who will be having the interactions with students and just so just you know just like yet another thing that that that

we'll be relying on for teachers to to being aware and so just um just thanks for thank you for doing that and also thank you for the support that they will be hopefully getting from their counselors and whatnot at each building it's a big lift can you can you give us just a two minute uh idea of what role sisterhood and journeymen are gonna be able to play in in mental health supports not in terms of counseling obviously but in terms of you know student community and positivity sure uh first of all i'd like to uh congratulate betsy archibald who is the new uh ed for sisterhood and you know that long ago when sisterhood was very small uh with just a few staff members and community members who who really saw an opportunity and

to to work uh strengthening our uh the resilience around um our our young female students and so um they've now grown and and have their own ed and an organization that is that is well placed uh similar to journeyman so they've they've been in um your communication with me all along which has been wonderful and they are in a position because well hey they're not a school but they i've let them know that the way i interpret the decision making tree is that you can serve groups of students who are who demonstrate need and that remote learning may not be working before and so um you know they have an interest in serving you know our students our young men and young women sooner than later and they have ideas around how that might look

virtually but there might they're also exploring kind of service opportunities in the community and in person experiences of keeping groups kind of to five and fewer so um they're they're engaged they're ready to go i know that uh for example yvette and kaylee pierce at the middle school are starting to already screen and and look for uh candidates and asking those who participated last year if they want to continue participating in sisterhood and then working with those families and those students to get those services and those supports moving yeah they're they're in a great place i can't wait to to see and um you know nikki and alex are just um amazing to work with and we want to be able to we want to be able to for them to access some of our

spaces you know um if we're not if we're not using them uh we believe that we can um you know provide some of that and then if we have outdoor spaces uh you know kind of that are become better developed they can use those as well great thank you i put athletics here um just because most people still want to you know kind of what's what's what's it look like so i'll just kind of give it another quick update there won't be any fall sports but they'll be um you know right now we're in a non-sport specific uh conditioning phase where students can come and and groups of fiber are smaller and lift weights outside or they can they can run um so a non-sport specific condition and it really is mostly around weights yoga

um stretching and and running and then in about a month we'll go to sports specific coaching um again all the protocols and mitigation um strategies in place uh and then hopefully with the aim i think it's december 28th where we might see uh season two or that winter season begin um if if we're if the disease activity is where it is now uh because i i haven't checked it in a couple days but i think it was at 79 or 74 in terms of out of a hundred thousand for king county if it's at the same level we will not see competitions we'll kind of continue in this cycle of non-sport specific conditioning and sport specific conditioning in hopes that the disease activity will drop and we'll be able to have some competitions so i

know many of our athletes are super disappointed our coaches are disappointed they want to get kids engaged we know that when students are connected to extracurricular activities they thrive uh you know in all areas and so we know this is critical for our kids um mental well-being as well and any questions around athletics yeah uh i think we've talked a little bit about the fall enrollment um just let you know there was i think in there um you know the survey kind of mirrors what we're what we're seeing in actual enrollment right now so um hopefully and again once you know we've we've had a lot more connect connections between families and admin and counselors around sharing concerns and sharing more more up-to-date information so i'm optimistic that that number is actually going to decrease

but um we that's a that's a wait-and-see um and i kind of wanted to you know i mean most of you were there for the community q and a's we had zabet kind of recounted we had some really strong attendance numbers there like you said tough questions good questions i i know that um danny and greg asked for that by the way all the community q and a's are are posted on our coronavirus website so on that on that coronavirus website there's what it's called community updates and so you go there and you can see you kind of all the community updates including the q and a's the recordings and the chats so those are available well it's a it's a page on the district website right right it's a page on the district website

and um danny and greg are were intentional about going back into the chats and finding questions that they felt were not answered during that time because there were a lot a lot of questions um and our following up with those with those people who had questions but didn't get you know didn't have the opportunity to hear their their question asked and answered during the q a so um but uh you know at the secondary building obviously i don't say obviously most of the questions were around uh the the change from semester to quarter system and both danny and greg shared their their thinking and their why and um and but also let me just reiterate that for us really really quickly the the why really quickly the capacity i will i will share the right

i'll show the the the the maybe the quicker version but welcome to the longer one as well um when we were in the spring i want to be very clear that we saw families not engaging and those families typically were our are our our families of our of color our students of color and students who receive special services it was just a very difficult time for them each school took data on on their on on engagement but not only that they spoke with families and and really heard loud and clear that the capacity for families to manage in a six period system and quite frankly these are questions that that we were asking before pandemic you know what what kind of systems um maybe you know racist in their structure and i say that in

a way that they're not we we kind of persist in the way we think about our systems and our structures and maybe this is a time that we take a step back and and look at that because if you look and examine the data in our district it's very clear that we have not been making the kind of progress that we should be making with all the resources that we have on this island and the you know the hearts of our staff but we're still not making headway in reducing the opportunity gaps and so and so we made a very kind of bold and ambitious decision to really minimize the the the system for for these families and hopefully also the number of students that a teacher is teaching in a quarter so that more

energy can be put around engaging our families and supporting them in this process um we have heard a lot from families who feel like this does not work for them um and quite frankly we feel like and we've heard some from families who said you know if i'm so glad you went to the quarter system because i would have had to have homeschooled or done something different because six periods would have never worked for my for my student um so it's not like we're not hearing affirmation of this as well and i think that's why it's important to get information but i feel like our our families of color and and students who struggle those are the ones least likely to speak up and we have not we typically don't hear from them and so

um we made a very uh pointed decision around basing uh supporting those families and those students with like with the quarter system but again it's it's important to remember that we don't know what's going to happen we we have we have amazing staff creative staff and they're going to be there they're you know they they have strategies in place to mitigate some of those gaps and it sounds like danny has also made some recent decisions around ap calc and ap chem um and so that just kind of shows you that we are that we're making changes and open to feedback and and and doing that so for me it was a racial equity decision um and did we hear from those families that four quarters was better i mean a quarter system was better three

quarters uh i don't we we don't we heard from them that it was too much that the we we didn't hear that three quarters was better um so that you know we're also kind of trying to work within the strengths of our skyward system okay which again is is making me wonder about all of our systems and and you know are we working in a system that perpetuates this and what do we need to do to change it and so i think what we're seeing too with with uh community dot is that we want to we want to get more we want to be in a more of a co-design and co-create posture um they we i want to see them represented and you know as parents on our reopening team i want to see

more representation quite frankly like on the bachelon schools foundation you know where where the the organizations that drive some of our systems we just we aren't seeing that representation and so it's becoming clear to me that we need more of that um but you know in terms of a three-quarter system these were you know debated amongst staff and not all the not all staff felt like that was going to be the best decision either but um in the end those who spoke with those parents and gathered that engagement data and and felt that that was going to be the you know the best the best process to move forward with so in short make it super oversimplified it's not just a matter of choosing the best the most desirable academic model in terms of avoiding

learning gaps etc it's also about making sure that we're able to access as many of our students as possible and have time built into the system to address their needs and not have the system so packed from start finish during the day that there's no allowable time to meet them where their needs are whether they're you know special needs or they're english language learners or they're highly capable and they want additional support the idea is to allow some time flexibility in the system to address whatever a student's needs are by minimizing the number of classes that are concurrently happening is that is that it that's it thank you spring you had your hand raised oh yeah i think reagan reagan addressed it in part but just really quickly i i think i remember danny saying

that it was it was also a decision based on not just feedback from particular populations like the ones that reagan just named it really it was sort of this the majority of students and parents is that right that there was he used the word sustainability that there was that there's there was zoom fatigue there was you know that if we were we don't know how long we're gonna have to maintain distance learning but that it was that this was keeping in mind and i think this is what reagan was addressing all our students and that this is really thinking forward that we're not just doing this for three months we're just we it could go on longer so that this would help maintain their mental health um as well as thinking about academics and curriculum

but that it's it has a different impact on our students to have to do learning in this way and so we want to make sure they don't burn out because i was certainly seeing in my therapy practice in my own family um and maybe some of you share that sentiment that i saw my kids burning out on school through a computer so i just wanted to i guess that was the word clarification yeah danny uses the word simplify align and and sustainable so um okay i think that there are models that um address those issues and concerns uh without correct people going to a quarter model i mean there's modified semester models that do reduce screen time that we don't have six classes a day and some other things and so um it is a

big change it's a really big change i think danny said too that they looked at actually five or six potential models like you're mentioning that right yeah he was eight eight yeah gus gus and danny um you know went out and and because gus was in issaquah and so like for example rebecca's system really closely mirrors issaquest system um but they you know they went out and kind of canvassed some some early models that were out there and then tried to understand you know our skyward and how our classes are set up and the numbers and alternating days and so this requires all six periods though i think that's right right right yeah i i didn't say that that gus followed issaques model for secondary but rebecca's uh elementary model closely follows the sequence model

i have some general questions can is this can i ask is it can i ask can i just jump in all right um my questions are um substitutes teachers substitute teachers and how does that work just briefly um and then also i think you briefly talked about it but sort of tutors and people who can volunteer and when would that um you know like if people want to get involved when would that process begin i mean i there's that and then also is there any encouragement about um families potting together um and and then if they are potting together obviously in a safe way um i'm being um cognizant of children not being left out um so if you have a class never been spotting together and making sure that everyone i mean not not

they're potting together but that they have pods you know what i mean so those are my substitutes tutors and pods these are questions they don't usually would ask what was the second one's about uh tutor volunteers okay so substitutes were working through the details of what that looks like because there's this kind of interesting paradox that if a teacher can record a lesson right and if they can record you know kind of so you know do you substitute it but but we want i feel like we need substitutes and we we want we need them trained in the learning platforms we have some ideas about who they are and we're trying to also um get classified staff those that are able to emergency certified so that they can be kind of on call for for

some of that because they're already in our system um and so we don't have a a firmed up plan yet but we we do believe that we are going to need substitutes because teachers will not feel well and want to do this you know not be able to do the synchronous learning um but what does it look like when you have a remote class that's synchronous and a sub comes on and then just either shows you know the regular you know like a video a pre-recorded lesson of the teacher or they it's it's it's kind of a it's like a thought experiment going crazy so um so another new coven thing yeah we're just gonna continue to work with that and and i know our admin are wanting to talk with their staff and better

understand what that would look like as well so in terms of tutoring um you know we want to stand up as much tutoring as we can the but we and we know that we need volunteers to do that tutoring but we also know we need a volunteer coordinator to to coordinate the volunteers right now um we are you know our classified staff we don't know we haven't just figured out where everybody and we know the classified staff are going to go to you kind of back to an hourly time sheet and record time and what they're doing and so then we're hoping to get some information work with um you know bdsp and there may be some opportunity for some classified staff to organize tutors there may not be we don't know yet um and

so uh we're very interested in it because we know that some communities are kind of chomping at the bit to help out um but we need to start school first and then and then kind of you know make sure that what we're doing is is is meeting some of those immediate needs in terms of access and and and and how families are experiencing that first um but i'm optimistic that we're going to have quite a like a a nice group of folks who are going to be able to to reach out and help um but it it will take a dedicated person to supervis you know to coordinate that effort um we love having volunteers but it does require extra hands an extra you know extra person to to do that work because right now

i mean if you were to ask you know teaching and class there's very few people who probably tell you that they have space or capacity to now take on a group of five 10 15 20 you know volunteers but we we want to make that happen and there's probably i'm hoping that there may be some some classified opportunity there but i'm just not sure yet um there's probably someone in the community who would gladly volunteer to do that coordinated coordination so so what are we going to do is there a next step on a volunteer coordinator i mean what what is your next step more time my next step is to open school on monday right and then get kids there and and then you know start taking a look at what our our classified

staff are doing and then work with l m and our vesp members to see if there's any opportunity for staff members to help out in that space and then we get a person then yeah but my my goal is not to get like into week two and week three yet because i want to make sure like right now jody and i are working on a plan to get uh commuter students their materials so jody and i will be going over on monday to the west seattle stadium and hand delivering uh you know or doing the distribution of supplies and materials for our commuter students and then amy cecera is going to be going over southworth to to do that we had 231 families sign up for that for that delivery service so that's awesome um

and we we can't wait just we can't wait to see them um [Music] and then you're hot your last question was pods and we're very interested in and setting up connections and allison reed who was part of our reopening team and she's involved in my she's the ed for vashon center for the arts i don't want to state something that's obvious but it may not be so alison reed um brought to my attention uh when her when her kids were younger in the district the district had a system in place where they provided families uh like addresses of where people lived and you could you would know like okay here are all the kids that live in tahlequah here are all the kids who live in dilworth or here are the kids who live in

gold beach and families were kind of not pushed together but given the opportunity to connect with other students in their neighborhoods and even just like and so she reminded me of that used to happen a long time ago and then she told me that and then that reminded me of what we did with commuter families last year because we did a kind of an opt-in list where families could provide their personal information where their student went to school in the name of their student and then families could connect that way for rides you know child care extracurricular activities emergency you know pick up those kinds of things and we had some families you know utilize that tool and engage that way so i think we can create some type of system like that and obviously

uh making sure that the admin admin really wants to and i believe our counseling staff really want to try to facilitate this but we have to do it in a way that protects people's privacy that's equitable and to make sure that um you know we're not over overstepping or overreaching so but we believe if families want to opt in um you know that could be a great first step and just sharing information uh the older kids apparently call them corn teams and they if you're k5 it's a pod so clearly i'm k5 i'm all about the pod thank you for all of that and i you know i know you hey i know you all have a lot on your plate but it's just important all these little details are going to make it work

yeah absolutely absolutely there's some good new labor management front [Music] it looks like vea ratified our mou and so a big shout out to all the va leadership um just saw a little clap from lisa and um it was a you know good opportunity to really focus on what is going to is going to help our our staff uh be safer help our students be safer with the focus on equity as well and just productive conversations and just a lot of great collaboration and i'll echo that uh with vesp as well um we're making significant process i know they're still working we're still working through some details but uh but anyway it's been a real positive process with our with our labor leaders all with uh kind of the aim again on on on safety

and the health and well-being of our staff and students and our community so can we get copies of that mou please right so um i'll have to kind of go re-look i i think there's probably some type of signature that i'll need from the board chair but whatever yeah yeah yeah so they're they're pretty you know the mou for veas is kind of a hot off the press so not ready for today's uh meeting um in front of the board um you know that first meeting in september cool yeah nice to have those uh kind of clear path to start school yes absolutely absolutely everybody is eager to get going yeah that's that's right so uh there's there's a lot of eagerness and um i got a text today from one of our building leaders

that that was really encouraging and they just said that staff like the staff time that was spent today went really well and that staff are in a in a in a really good place to get to get our to get going and um so it's it's exciting i'm optimistic um and i echo kind of reagan sentiments it's time to start doing and then and then make decisions about what happens when we when we see results um you know for better for worse [Music] so what other questions do you have around the reopening right now i think i've run through most of my information i'm good okay everybody speak now i had one more thing so you know i was thinking about one of the comments public comments tonight and the remark about not um not

responding to the comments that we've been getting and and i just wanted to i wanted i wonder about that do you feel as though for me i mean because there's public comments which are so appreciated but also i'm pretty aware that you get daily emails and phone calls not just on the day of a school board meeting from parents and danny does and rebecca does and what's your impression or what can you tell us in terms of how you're responding to parents and does it seem like you're getting additional feedback that um you know parents are feeling a little bit feeling that we're paying attention um adequately that we're um where the q a was helpful uh i don't know if i'm articulating well what i'm asking but you know maybe it's maybe you don't

have feel like you have you could speak for all the principles and others but at least from your perspective are you getting any kind of feedback like that thank you the q a was helpful it addressed some of my questions and concerns yeah the i'll just share the the nature of feedback in general is that it's the ratio of positive feedback to negative feedback just in my administrative career i'll be just real quite frank is i it's very rare that that district leaders or folks here that this is working or thank yous and i don't know what that says i think it's just that i don't think it actually says anything um i think i think that's just kind of maybe what's natural is that when when we when we're content or when things are

working um it may not be in our nature to express that as regularly as when something's not working for me and i'm going to speak i need to speak up about it and so um i would say that this situation is not different than other kind of significant decisions or decisions that may be contentious in terms of my leadership experience so um in terms of people reaching out to me i've had much fewer as of late so um i and my general rule is that i try to be responsive but also redirect our community to the people who have the who have the capacity to answer the questions um and so i typically want to connect them either with building leaders or counselors or you know or their teachers because i believe it's a there

is a process which we want to be able to talk about the issues with the people who are most able to directly impact you know those decisions and so um that makes a lot of sense yeah but just in typical i i don't get a lot of um thank you especially during these difficult times i i think i i get that and we all do but it's really good to understand what's working as we go along you know like let's not just focus on of course all the room for improvement but what is working absolutely and that's that's always been a focus of mine um it's kind of an old stephen covey principle about the circle of influence and the more you grow what's working you expand that circle and i i i do tend

to focus more on on what's working and try to improve that make it better um and bring more of it not ignoring the what doesn't work part um that's there you know there's definitely a need to fix that but there is um even when i would counsel and i work with parents and the more parents spend time in the more we spend time in the what's working it can tend to push and make that what's working circle a little bit smaller so i don't know we're just talking now i guess um the the feedback is critical so i i always welcome it and i think that's why i offered my phone number tonight is i'd like to have a conversation and talk more and you know and share more information so um board calendar so

i there's not a lot that's any different with the board planning calendar and jody let's go and bring it up um in terms of the cadence of our meetings and what happens at the meetings um i would like some feedback in terms of what we do want to get board site visits scheduled and maybe because we're kind of running at 9 10 tonight we can i certainly can defer that to email um but it'll look look a little differently a little it'll be video but i i do feel that it's probably still very value i find it very valuable for board members to hear what's happening from principals to to have those um engagements with with students and i remember when who who was with me last year when we were at the high school

uh with the with the student racial equity team was that was it used a bad i can't remember i thought i thought it was a bit i'm sorry i was distracted for a second right side again totally i said the interactions that we have with the students in the buildings and their principals for the board boardside visits i'm i i find them really valuable and um what i can do is that i can send out we can do this by email in terms of wanting to sign people up but uh jody's created a google doc that's in front of us and then we want to try to get at least two board members um at each one and then we rotate through so that at least during the year each board member would have at

least two times where they've been able to again meet with administration have some student discussion and do some type of classroom walkthrough or sharing experience so i have a i have a proposal board site visits are awesome i i have really really loved uh participating in that uh working from home and and uh you know our circumstances these days i could personally i could take any day so um and if other people have calendars that are not as well defined also maybe jody just puts our names in there and then we can horse trade if necessary uh but anyhow i have the flexibility uh to just put me in where you need me okay and if we need to adjust then i can trade later that's nice i'm probably always the pain in the rear

when it comes to scheduling so that definitely won't work for me i may probably just create more work but um i do love the school walkthroughs too so um but anyway whatever i will share with you whatever works yeah we'll we'll share it with you and then you can kind of um you can pick and choose and kind of horse trade and still be kind of within the within the document so um okay and the uh the board retreat and so um when we look at the calendar in october you can kind of see that we've identified um the board retreat for jody did we pick that date tuesday the 13th or the 20th i think we picked it also because i think spring tuesdays are one of your more flexible days um and typically

we've done kind of like a three hour that happened around dinner time and we would kind of do some eating at the same time um it'd be like from four to seven or five to eight kind of thing um and so i just want to hear from from y'all maybe what date might work more better than others or i vote for the 13th just because we have a school board meeting on the 20th or 22nd so it's nice to spread out the joy then we'll have a meeting on the october 8th so it would be i guess between those two 13 works for me for me 13th it works for me sure it works for me okay what about time um i kind of have to do it after school so but i can do

it a little i mean i could do do the afternoon i could do in the afternoon too the morning would be difficult afternoon's better for me dude after work after work uh how long were you going to take for the retreat again probably around two to three hours so bob what's the earliest that you could start uh 5 36 should be best then we probably do three hours but we'll but we could we could do 5 30 maybe 5 30 to 7 30 or 5 30 to 8. that works okay okay yeah that's great let's do 5 30 to 8 then jody on the 13th that's a that's a noticed public meaning right right right correct and uh i want us to we'll probably be talking about in terms of agenda we'll have some kind

of board superintendent relation part of that um you know be some team building which would be awesome um no and then uh i i want to start beginning a conversation around planning for uh strategic planning like our district strategic planning that's that's um something that i want us to be thinking about i think august 13th we'll get here we'll be here before you know it um and i don't know how much you know kind of preparation but i'll i will try to work with also reagan and spring in our and our one-on-ones and kind of connecting with you the rest you know during our times um i don't know how much kind of process or ideas we'll have we might be starting from scratch in terms of what we you know how we want to

do strategic planning um but that is part of what we even pre pandemic or pre-coveted i was considering um putting in front of the board for this year so uh i was i don't know if this is the appropriate place or not but aboard superintendent roles i have a feeling that we are on you know on parts of a spectrum here and and i sense that there's a fair amount of disagreement or lack of consensus about board superintendent roles i don't know if anyone else is thinking that but i would welcome spending a half an hour on that yeah i i kind of call that board superintendent relationships too so okay gonna put that in there okay i think it's a good thing that we review that annually and we tend to anyway um yeah

yeah we've we've done that annually so that that'll be part of that i found that it's just it's more awkward and weird totally online so that'll be good right yeah i look forward to that strategic planning conversation that should be fun wait did we just say that we're we're doing it all online i'm sorry i thought i heard you talk about dinner and i think i zoned out and i was thinking we were going to meet in person i i was saying that we that that's just how we've done in the past you know i'm just kind of recapping are we able to be outside and meet in distance propose something like that but we'll see where we are with kind of disease activity etc so that's i i understand um that would definitely be

my my personal preference if we can say my preference as well we'll just keep wearing our masks so we can reopen the economy in the schools right yep mask up to open up definitely the priority the rest of the board calendar kind of follows our our normal cadence of events you know we have planning process that's built in there um surplus processes are you know our our commitment and reports on equity and you know school safety and special services so that that i don't anticipate that changing too significantly but if do you have any suggestions for changes or i you know i mean this is the time for for some feedback but it doesn't mean that yeah i'm gonna suggest that we i'm gonna suggest that we take this part off offline and work on

feedback and stuff just because mindful all the time and i think we have another another thing to do after this so maybe we can work on this um over google god bless you reagan yeah my intuition when i looked at it before the meeting is that this seems to work fine maybe we revisit uh you know take a deep breath after school opens and make sure it still feels fine sounds good i did want to have a i'll make a very quick point um and this was going to be under new business but uh i'm as the new guy i'm not understanding really how board members bring stuff for the agenda and um i trust there is a process but i don't understand it could you could either under either now or later i guess

um i just wanted to put a marker down how does a board member or collection of board members get something on the agenda yeah i usually call all slate or call the board chair and talk about it on the agenda okay there's no formal nothing written down a pretty informal bunch okay so we did discuss that and we i my recollection what reagan you just described is what we all agreed to as as maybe it wasn't written down and formalized but it was definitely we all um that that worked for all of us when we talked about it last time is what i recall yep so can we jump to the consent agenda and jump off our next thing see do i have a motion to approve the consent again all in favor all right

new business no new business right now lots of new business in the future all right well so with that we're going to go ahead and adjourn the meeting at 9 20. i'm sorry i'm sorry reagan we're gonna go to an exempt session to discuss some of the uh recent labor updates how long do we expect this to be for my wife purposes okay cool all right so you got the separate invitation for that so we're going to sign out here and we'll see you over there thank you jody thanks jody bye everybody thanks everyone that came good luck happy start to school
