001we are very lucky this evening to have a special guest lead us in the pledge of allegiance this is an eisenhower student and i'm going to ask assistant principal ceja to introduce the student to us thank you good evening i'm jill ceja one of the assistant principals at eisenhower um it is my pleasure to introduce senior class president taylor yaki who will lead us in the pledge of allegiance this evening thank you jill um taylor the way this will work is that mrs anderson will project a flag onto the screen and as soon as you see that flag you can tell us to begin and we will join you in the pledge ready begin i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands one
002nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you very much taylor we just love having students lead us in the pledge at our meetings it's it's one way that we can connect to students in this time where we're so remote from one another um you're a junior correct uh no i'm actually i'm a senior you're a senior ah so what are your plans for next year um i'm hoping to attend a four year but i won't hear back until uh this coming spring for my options well good luck thank you um i'm going to allow the the board members to to say thank you to you as well and they may have another question or two for you okay okay for sure okay uh graciela would you like to begin sure hi
003taylor i'm brazilian it's nice to meet you thank you for being here with us uh you said yeah uh you said that you are hoping uh to attend a four year um would you have a sense of what you're hoping to study um yes so wherever i go i know that i like to study law and then take my degree from there very cool awesome we we always need a lot of uh good uh trained attorneys so best of luck in that thank you graciela raymond yes hello my name is raymond nice to meet you too i want to thank you for being here and for your leadership as well and representing eisenhower high school and so thank you for that i just have one question what area of law do you do you want
004to or do you plan to concentrate on so i'm not exactly sure i just know that i want to start out so um do political science for a major and then from there and after hopefully attending a law school from there i want to apply as a jag officer or the air force hopefully and then let that take me from there yes well those are great plans and we i wish you the best of luck thank you thank you thank you raymond norm good evening taylor welcome and thank you for uh leading us in the pledge tonight i'd like to ask you a couple questions we're all prying into your life here tonight so just uh what are what have been a couple of your major interests while you've been in high school um i
005would definitely say um since being a freshman it's always been number one probably leadership just because that's kind of been um i feel like the umbrella of social things around me so being in leadership has connected me to the community and doing things through my school that have just opened a window of opportunities for me so definitely leadership first if you could if you could change one thing that we do in our schools and now that you've been in them for 12 years what's one thing you would like to see us improve in the school system to make it a better experience for students no pressure taylor i'm sure you can think of many but you just get to say what um i would say one thing that we're working on a lot more in
006leadership is um a lot of student voice but not just the student voice of the kids who you find more reaching out like someone like myself or my fellow like leadership students but more of the kids that kind of i guess you know everyone's what everyone has to say matters but we don't always target the right groups of people it's more like we wait for people to kind of stand up like us leadership kids so i think definitely getting an opinion from the overall i think that's very important yeah oh sorry subjective of you yeah that sometimes the kids that are doing the leadership things aren't the only ones with opinions and thoughts and experiences that we need to hear about so i really appreciate your sharing that thought thanks again for uh being with
007us and i wish you well in your future endeavors thank you very much thanks norm ryan do you want to wrap us up taylor um of course like everyone else i just want to say thank you for being here with us tonight i know um well i barely remember but i imagine that senior year is still as stressful and crazy and fun and hard all at the same time so i just i want to tell you hang in there keep it up uh finish strong have a great senior year and we from the board perspective i know we're all rooting for you as you go forward so thank you so much for being here tonight thank you very much taylor i want to um echo the rest of the board and congratulating you on your
008on on your finishing up of your school student era here in the yakima school district um you you have wonderful goals and i hope that you're able to accomplish it every single one of them um if you um have any need or desire to reach out to the board for any reason in the rest of your year don't hesitate um we love to hear student voice and i don't know if you're part of the superintendent student advisory council or not but that is a a good um vehicle for our us to hear from the students and um we i just wish you well looking forward to seeing you at graduation and um best wishes for a wonderful senior year and a successful launch after thank you very much thank you um you're welcome to stay
009um i know that you probably have things that are pulling at you and need your attention like maybe homework or something but um we won't be offended if you have to leave but you're more than welcome to stick around for a while if you want to all right i just want to say thank you to everyone who i've talked to and who's also in the meeting and thank you for this opportunity it was nice talking to all of you thank you taylor and thank you jill for introducing her to us a good evening everyone you as well um next on the agenda is the yakima land acknowledgement and graciela will be reading that for us tonight thank you martha today the schools of the yakima school district rest on the ancestral lands of the 14
010confederated tribes and bands of the yakama nation the people of yakima nation inhabited more than 12 million acres across adams benton chelan douglas franklin grand kittitas flikitat and yakima counties today we honor those native peoples who are tied to the land through history legends and culture we acknowledge their descendants who live in the world today we thank the caretakers of this land who have lived here and continue to live here since time immemorial and acknowledgment is a simple powerful way to show respect and a step toward correcting the stories and practices that erase indigenous people's history and culture it also honors the truth as a school district we will continue to build upon our relations with the yakama nation thank you graciela next on our agenda is the board reorganization as is our practice and
011in accordance with our policies in december we hold elections for two or three of the board positions this year it happens to be two board vice president and board president at this time i will open the floor for nominations for the position of board vice president i would be honored to nominate graciela villanueva for another term as our vice president graciela do you accept i accept are there any other nominations for board vice president madam president i would nominate raymond navarro raymond do you accept yes okay are there any other nominations for board vice president okay hearing none i will close the nominations for board vice president um if we were in person we would have ballots um i think probably the best the best the one of the best ways might be for us
012to just in the chat send a note to barb with your choice for vice president can we do that everyone will see those so if it just goes to you if we just address it to you in the chat can we do that i don't think so i don't think in google meets i think in zoom you're allowed to change yeah yeah not in google me okay so so let's um let's then email and this may take this may take a minute for me to find my email an email to barb anderson your choice for board vice president okay martha i'm just i'm just wondering why we're changing the procedure for voting usually we have a role called vote uh usually we don't have a contested election when there is a contested election we typically
013use a ballot okay it can be just verbal we can do it verbal if you if you would like to suggest that that's what i'm suggesting it just makes it easier all right that's just me though so there's four of you so i have other board members with preferences i've already emailed barb oh okay you're faster than the rest of us i already emailed barb as well okay well let's um let's continue then with just with the email okay i received them all and we have three votes for miss and two votes for mr navarro jr okay thank you for allowing us to kind of step away from how we would normally do this congratulations graciela uh next is um nominations for the position of board president are there any nominations for the position of
014board president assuming that the current president would like to continue in that role i would like to nominate martha rice thank you norm i accept are there other nominations for board president are there other nominations for board president okay hearing none we'll close nominations and because there's just a single nominee for president we'll call a roll that's being away then yes ryan beckett hi mr walker hi mr navarro jr aye president rice aye motion passes five 5-0 thank you all it's always a little awkward kind of facilitating this part of the of of the meeting in december um next we have acknowledgements of accomplishments and recognitions we have several tonight [Music] we have a couple of oh i need to back up a little bit i need to um announce interpretation service or have someone
015announce interpretation services tonight and we do have an asl interpreter tonight as well as a spanish interpreter patty are you interpreting for us in spanish yes i am um you interpret on a separate channel right correct okay so um anyone that's tuned into this channel if you need spanish interpretation um barb where would they go to find that link the same place that they go for the english when it's on board docs on our website okay so you would go to the district's website at ysd7.org select quick links select board docs and in that first screen there is a link for the spanish interpretation let me let me turn that into spanish okay in this main room okay we also are being live streamed tonight and we are being recorded if you're already here on
016live stream you know how how to find us but if you're interested in the recording you would go to the district's website at ysd7.org select quick links then select board of directors and on that first page on the right hand side you will find a link not only to the live stream but also a link to the district's web page which is where um the our youtube the district's youtube page excuse me and that's where the recording of tonight's meeting will appear probably the beginning of next week and i would just remind everyone that when you are speaking please speak slowly to allow for our interpreters to keep up okay we have several [Music] recognitions this evening the first one is there are two music student recognitions and i've asked norm to do those two
017student recognitions okay well as a former high school and college musician myself i'm thrilled to honor a couple students from yakima first and let me give you a little bit of background regarding the western international band clinic these students are among a few hundred selected from thousands of auditions across six states they receive the privilege of performing under the direction of internationally acclaimed conductors the honor bands met november 19th through 22nd in seattle the western international band clinic is a convention for directors and students started in 1979 wibc features four 150 member high school honor bands under six world-renowned guest conductors and a soloist each year students in the united states canada and australia participate and this year from eisenhower high school we had trumpet player ethan goo and his music director and instructor is
018mr jeremy freeze so congratulations to ethan is the on tonight is he on this broadcast okay well moving on second i'd like to acknowledge mr walker yes can we please just slow down a little bit for patty okay thank you yeah there was a lot of information there okay she's ready okay second we have the washington music educators association allstate which if i'm correct i believe that's going to be held in yakima this year but i'm not sure about that someone will have to fill me in at any rate davis senior fernando flores submitted an outstanding audition this fall and was selected for the washington music educators association all-state symphony orchestra on viola fernando is the section leader for davis's chamber orchestra as well as a member of the davis color guard and jazz band
019i i i'm so sorry mr walker but i need you to slow down when you are talking because i can't keep up okay thank you so go ahead and repeat the last two sentences because i miss them okay um fernando was selected for the washington music educators association all-state symphony orchestra on viola and fernando is the section leader for davis chamber orchestra as well as a member of the davis color guard and jazz band fernando's instructor is mr scott gorinson i think i saw fernando log in so maybe he's here i think i saw him as well i don't see him right this minute is he here fernando yes i am congratulations fernando that's quite an accomplishment thank you very much do you want to tell us about your experience um sure um i think
020i worked on the audition for like about a month a little under probably um it was a little challenging but i think it was really worth the experience that i'm gonna be able to have perfect fernando what are the exact dates of all state orchestra um i believe it's during mid-winter break in february okay and will that be held here in yakima uh yeah i believe it's in the convention center okay i'll be looking for that then and again congratulations to you thank you fernando i know you probably have things pulling at you and needing your attention so we won't be offended if you log off and you're welcome to stay and watch the rest of or at least part of the meeting if you'd like to okay thank you very much thank you uh
021next we have recognitions for two of our students who reached um who who accomplished their graduation and met their graduation requirements over the summer and graciela would you introduce these students to us yes thank you martha one of the great pleasures of serving on the school board is recognizing students at graduation so it's my pleasure to recognize students for the extended graduation class of 2021. the board of directors would like to congratulate congratulate the following students for having earned their diploma after june 1st 2021 jayden rogers and adriana julian arias both from eisenhower high school thank you graciela are either jaden or ariana on the call tonight i don't see them in the list okay thank you i just want to extend the board's congratulations to them for continuing to pursue their diploma it's sometimes
022pretty difficult to continue that when your classmates have reached that level in their education and you still have a credit or two to make up so it takes an extra special um kind of will to um continue and to reach your your your diploma so congratulations to those two students next we have um fall sports and raymond would you like to take false sports for us yes thank you martha it's my pleasure to recognize on behalf of the board the student-athletes who participated in fall sports first of all we do have julianne rivera from davis high school julian placed second at the wiaa cross-country ambulatory division is julian here today yes yes julie would you like to say a few words on your experience yeah all right tell them about it yeah tell us about
023your experience and how that went for you i was i must find it super fast in cross country i could do that all right and then i i started ready i looked into the grass yeah i'm going to grasp how the face to the ninth okay so nice i find all the way and then and then boom right to the finish line that's awesome julian congratulations that uh on your accomplishments there and thank you yes and thank you for representing davis high school in the yakima school district that that he did also his was mr garcia is mr garcia would you like to say a few words no okay we'll go ahead and move on thank you and that was awesome julian thank you so much appreciate that next we do have eisenhower high school
024boys cross country team they place third and as far as i've been on the board i think every every fall we've recognized this program this program is a what i would call a powerhouse cross-country program and so it's just great to recognize the eisenhower cross-country team every year and so on the team this year we had a few individuals i'd like to name and if there's one of you that are here today and you like to speak and also would like to hear from mr english if you're here as well first of all we do have amma alamen alamena sorry i may mispronounce that fernando ivara oscar lopez aiden waddle mario cervantes reyes nathan johnson and caleb stevenson would any of you like to speak on behalf of your team i will my name's amhan
025by the way okay thank you yeah so um for all of us it was a he came by his huge surprise this year we didn't really expect to come in and do so well at state uh going in we had a lot of struggles early on and we pulled through and worked with each other and uh we showed the results that we were really happy with all right well thank you congratulations once again third place for state that's quite an accomplishment and thank you again for representing eisenhower high school and the yakima school district so thank you very much uh mr english are you with us today we'd like to say a few words uh yes i am and uh yes i think i think we've got robert price on as well and uh you
026know i'd like to congratulate the team and it was just an exceptional performance on the day they were ranked number eight going into the state and they they just performed at a very very high level and uh you know alma can say that it was it wasn't uh you know expected per se because they had won the league but they got beaten in the district meet then they came back and uh and finished third at state uh defeating teams that we we'd lost to all year long so it was a very exceptional performance so we're very proud of them uh coach price are you with us yeah i'm here all right why don't you take it from here well then i you know the the one thing as phil said there was a lot of
027and and omaha did too there's a lot of um intrigue um a lot of doubts uh from all parties in some cases and uh but they pulled it out and they beat you know a lot of teams that necessarily uh obviously highly ranked but as a fellow former coach with our program who's no longer with us said to me is that and most of you know this as as mr navarro did say that the the frequency that we have in coming to this meeting and of course this team especially is a testament to what this program does for kids and being that i'm obviously a little biased as well but and also part of the of the english program all the way back in carroll high school you know this is a a huge testament
028to a program that is a dynasty and will continue on for for quite some time as long as uh as long as as long as phil and others are willing to partake so um but yeah i appreciate all the support the board has given us and the program and and everybody that's been involved throughout the whole yakima community as well and uh you know this this team did uh personify you know the the system that we have because as this coach did say to you know to to me afterwards that and this seems kind of negative but and the kids know this though is that you know um they did a great job that day but with the talent on other teams that we beat that made it even sweeter for these kids uh to
029to go from eighth place going in all the way to third and they know that and they know that their work and dedication uh continued that that tradition of us making a podium so once again thanks to everybody i'll sign out off that yes thank you and i also want to mention the other coaches so that's mr phil english mr ivan alfaro mr robert price who just heard from miss chelsea severin and mr anthony stewart so i want to congratulate all of you and not just for placing at state tournament uh for cross country but for the the tradition right that you're sending students to college to compete at the college collegiate level you're sending them off to get degrees and then moving into careers i know a few students that are and in their
030careers now and they're part of they were as a result in large part to the cross-country program at eisenhower high school so you're to be congratulated and keep up the good work so thank you so much uh guys if i could uh finish here uh quickly sure mr mr beckett welcome to the board i remember uh you in honors biology i think there's still an assignment that you didn't turn in by the way really that many yeah well you were a good student i do remember that uh and then uh patty i i took pity on you there i i didn't speak in my native gear today just to go easy on you i thought that would be a bridge too far for you there in our translation but uh i want to thank the
031board and everybody involved when when robert mentioned if i continue with this i did see a smile across anthony's face thinking that okay is that is that something for the future that i don't have to deal with him anymore uh no no it's not it's it's no announcement coming no announcement coming uh but i would like to uh to wish all of you in in the gaelic sense very happy christmas and this is the way we do it in ireland and a very prosperous new year to all of you and it has been a difficult year has been difficult getting teams together training and coaching but uh with everything ended up well in the long run so season's greetings to all of you and thanks very much for the recognition tonight thank you phil so
032we're going to go ahead to our our next recognition the big nine announces the fall neca iwew award winners the national excuse me the national electric electrical contractors association and the international brotherhood of electrical workers are two organizations training electricians for the future neca ibew encourage all high school students to explore with their high school counselors a career in electrical construction industry which provides salary levels that are above average and careers that last a lifetime the following yakima school district students were recognized for demonstrating superior balance in academics athletics and community involvement from davis high school play soccer as carolyn matson from davis high school football i think we've read his name in the in the headlines on the news and the sports page ricardo acevedo and from eisenhower high school cross country hannah hilton
033and from eisenhower football on the football team is teague gilman so once again i want to congratulate all our student athletes for their participation and for placing or to for their performance at the state level as we just mentioned congratulations to all of you i know it takes hard work and dedication and takes good coaches that support them so congratulate we want to congratulate one more time all our student athletes and coaches thank you martha thank you raymond and again students and coaches if you have things that are pulling at you we understand if you have to leave but you're more than welcome to stay we understand completely if you have other commitments and need to leave um [Music] i can't wait for the time when we can actually congratulate these kids in in person
034next on our agenda are reports the first being reports from members of the board are there any members of the board that have any reports that they'd like to share with the rest of the board i do have one reminder tomorrow is the deadline for early registration for the national school board association annual conference at this point raymond has said that he is interested in going it's april 2 through 4 2022 in san diego raymond are you still interested in attending yes i am but i haven't confirmed yet so okay um are there any other board members that would be interested in attending we can still register after tomorrow but early the early bird registration closes tomorrow okay well check your calendars if this is something that you're interested in um let barb know and
035we'll get it on an agenda they are also offering virtual registrations um i think what that does it gives you access to videos after the conference i don't know that you can i haven't been able to find an awful lot about virtual registrations on the their website yet but i continue to look um i don't know what portions of the conference you would be able to log into if any and watch it live virtually but it does give you access to all of the workshops and materials after the conference the same is true for the upcoming advocacy institute which is i'm looking at the date here come on it is the 23rd and 24th of january it is there is a virtual registration for that again gives you access to the videos and materials after
036the conference i don't know that you have access to anything live during the conference but it's helpful to get access to the materials so i'm going to pursue that a little bit and typically i would ask the board for permission to go and represent not only our board but the washington state school directors association when meeting with our representatives and legislators and senators unfortunately all of the government buildings are still closed back in washington d.c and will continue to be closed for the foreseeable future so we won't be able to get in to see our representatives or senators and in addition that weekend that week rather the um house is on break so um we wouldn't be able to meet with them anyway because they won't be there they'll be back here um so i'm
037i'm working with um with our congressional representative to see if we could um set up a meeting locally for when he's back here on one of the upcoming breaks it might be the easiest way for us to get in touch with him um i checked into the equity conference to see if there is a virtual registration for that and there is not they are not doing a virtual registration for the equity symposium for national school board association so that's that's all i have anything else from board members okay next we have the superintendent's report mr superintendent thank you president rice members of the board uh first i would like to excuse assistant superintendent jenny rodriguez who would have liked to have been here tonight but was unable to attend as far as content for the
038superintendent's update the december character word is curious which is marked by desire to investigate and learn and the trait is that of critical thinker and problem solver in spanish curioso marcado por el desail de investigar aprender characteristica espenzador critico is with that i will turn the time over to our coveted response team members led by assistant superintendent stacy locke and also joining her is jewel brumley from davis high school stacey thank you superintendent green uh good evening uh school board of directors so some numbers for uh our school district related to covid headed in into the end of december it's hard to believe how long we've actually been at this our quarantine numbers are down a little bit uh to 1.51 we had 27 positive cases last week and in 234 quarantine so those numbers
039are are reducing next slide please barb overall our static testing site is doing really well uh we're getting a lot of people utilizing it and um i even heard in our covet conference that we had this week that we have parents say well if your kids went to yakima you too could go get tested um but their kids didn't so i mean it was kind of cute they were there saying look what yakima is doing so i was very proud proud of that and people recognizing what we are offering to our families in our community so again that that positivity rate was at 3.73 but again it was a decrease of 1.72 percent positivity and you can see usually our elementary school as far as percent quarantine are usually down in the the mid 50s
040uh however they were up around 70 percent of our students in the district being quarantined um this last week and uh we saw the week before that there were minimal number of students vaccinated but i'm going to have some good news for you here at the end of the presentation so moving forward next slide please barb so our on-site immunization clinics we have conducted three of those that were open to the community at lc we had 25 adults and nine children vaccinated at washington we had 20 adults and 22 children vaccinated and we'll talk a little bit more about adams elementary health fair in the next slide we still have barge legs oh goodness i know what i did i am so sorry patty i've got to be going about 100 miles an hour did
041you want me to start over daddy where would you like me to start just the last three sentences please thank you i am so i am so sorry i knew the minute martha said something what i did um so adams uh we will show in the in the next slide and then uh we still have on uh tonight we're having or this afternoon into this evening we have uh barge lincoln hosting an immunization clinic and then also davis high school as far as open to yakima staff and families that occurred yesterday and we had 34 adults two and then a variety of flu vaccinations and our own superintendent uh dropped in to get his booster and uh i think if there was a video we'd seen flinch i think he um trevor i'm not sure
042what your band-aid said but uh notice he was not looking at the needle i just want you to know he was not looking at the needle um next slide so our family health uh resource fair which i um talked about happening last week was very very well attended and some of those event highlights i thought it was important to bring it up because they ended up serving over a hundred meals they administered 38 adult coven vaccines 54 children covered vaccines and 50 flu shots in fact they ran out of vaccinations three times and had to go back in and get more and so it was we had 15 vendors there and everybody got an opportunity to be involved and so shout out to jackie gabby and erica for making this happen but this uh is
043the culmination of this is a result of the health cooperative that we are now embarking on and just that the very tip of the iceberg of of what is yet to come so very very exciting and people were very enthusiastic around it and excited to be there and what we had to offer so very cool next slide we'd also like to share that we just the coveted response team we applied for funding support through the cdc's covid19 screening testing to reopen and keeping schools open and our funding request was just approved for labor cost related to testing and related to contact tracing and so it is supporting three existing coveted uh response team members that are involved in testing as well as the addition of three new covet response team members for spring semester these
044six will most likely uh we are creating a hot shot team that will go out and provide uh on-site testing to our schools uh for uh positive and negative uh coveted tests and so that's a work in progress it will be kicking off here around the uh end of the first month in our new year but we did receive from the cdc a 250 000 grant to make this happen and so just just darn right exciting we also have another grant that we're meeting on on thursday through the learn to return that is very much supporting the work we are doing and very excited about our health cooperative model and so we're going to be looking for a large amount of funding uh through that grant and i will have more information for you that
045uh forthcoming next slide please so just so you know on monday and tuesday when we get back after break we're going to have our testing clinic open extended hours from 8 am to 11 am on monday and tuesday as well as the one to five in the afternoon and the idea behind that is that we are closed for the holiday break and we would like students we're going to remind through parent square students and families to get to get tested prior to coming to school the first of the year if they are have any uh covert related symptoms and so we want to open up at eight a.m so that we can begin conducting that testing soon and i think is there one more slide barb i do know i can speak to we have
046six six vaccination sites set up at six different schools uh start in january i just do not have dates confirmed or times confirmed yet but we will continue with our rollout for vaccinations for covid boosters for covet and as well as flu flu shots so any questions i could answer any questions for stacey congratulations on the um success of your health clinic night thank you adams that's wonderful thank you do you plan on um repeating that yes we will be and building from it yes excellent yes and again the the fact that we had 15 vendors there um was outstanding and um we did a partners in education visit uh last week and um i've had a variety of uh partners in our community reach out to me and want to be involved with our
047new uh health cooperative implementation and so we're very excited it's kind of like if you build it they will come and so we're extremely excited moving forward that's excellent news stacey um i do have one suggestion for you yes that would be to rename the team of six that are going out to schools after winter break i'm not sure that calling them the hotshot team is probably the best marketing strategy but i could be wrong you're not you know you're absolutely right we'll have to come up with something more inviting and creative that lures people in for the shot instead of driving them away right yeah yeah absolutely thank you thank you president right great news stacy thank you so much for sharing that with us you bet you bet and i'd like to take
048the opportunity to introduce my partner jewel brumley jewel thank you assistant superintendent miss locke and good evening board and we have our yakima county covered numbers um our numbers are going down as you can see by our daily cases have gone down almost every day for the last week so that's really good and our rate per hundred thousand did go down but um only went down to 243 that's from monday to sunday the 14 day rate today is at 2 33 but these are weekly monday to sunday for two weeks the seven day rate did drop quite a bit this last week as i said every day our numbers were less so we are at 99.2 cases per hundred thousand for a seven day and our positive cases by vaccination status and december we've had
04957 uh fully vaccinated people um contract covet and 339 unvaccinated again a stark difference our rates per 100 000 has not been updated by the health department um in december yet so but they should be going down the other numbers are going down also our hospitalizations um peaked right at the end of um well right at the beginning of this week the end of last week at 30 but we're back down to 22 for today so that's good hospitalizations by vaccination status again more unvaccinated people in the hospital than vaccinated our deaths um vaccinated versus unvaccinated we've had two deaths in december of vaccinated people and nine deaths for unvaccinated people and our percent hospitalized in december we actually had one person um zero to eleven one child one person 12 to 19 which is
050different than november we didn't have any in that and then uh our biggest number is uh 49 through 64 year olds we've had eight so far this month school age cases as of today [Music] they're declining 30 new students over the last two weeks and five new staff and the trends like stacy said are going down it's 21 percent of the total county cases are school age children k5 stayed approximately the same but 6 8 and went down and 9 12 went up but just by a few like three people initiated the vaccine in our whole county that's all ages we have 59.1 percent we're about to hit the 60 percent i suspect by well i know by the next time we have a school board meeting we'll be at the 60 percent uh 12
051and up initiating the vaccine we're at 73 almost 74 percent fully vaccinated our population 52.9 so 53 percent in the county and 12 of them up fully vaccinated we're at 68 percent so those numbers are growing if you look at the comparison since the beginning of the school year you can clearly see we are getting better um this is last week's data again we don't have the 5 to 11 year old updated yet but as stacy reported we've got quite a few more than that and the forecast um is leveling off right now um we've gone down some but we're not sure i'm kind of curious if we will um start seeing the new variant coming through since curious is our board word of the month anyone have any questions any questions for jewel she's
052curious as to whether you have any questions i don't see any thank you jewel thank you stacy we continue to rely on this data that you provide us at every meeting as we look forward and determining a number of things including when or if the board is going to go back into in-person meetings so thank you very much for your input this evening thank you president rice and uh thank you assistant superintendent locke and uh assistant principal at davis joel brumley appreciate that i i do want to have one clarification i believe the adams health fair also involved uh heavily uh the work of a couple of other individuals berenice ponce and anita quintana who are our family engagement family community engagement supervisors i believe so we wanted to acknowledge that when you have so
053many people involved sometimes we lose track and certainly it's a team effort we wanted to make sure that we acknowledge them moving on uh we now have a report from our attendance data and that will be miss shelby lockhart hi everyone i uh will make my report uh brief and hopefully informative i know we have a a lot of folks on the agenda so here we go okay uh martha can you see that okay yes okay great uh so i wanted to just bring us back at the december point here to the 2026 goal of 95 regular attendance with historical data showing pre-copa uh averaging about a 75 percent regular attendance rate i wanted to point out that some of the work that we've been doing recently around attendance is to um go back to
054our attendance goals and remind ourselves as we can kind of see above the water line a little bit right now what it was we set out to do around attendance and try and take incremental steps towards that final goal so we did this work over the summer with buildings around setting attendance goals based off of the 2026 goal at a district level it would it looks a lot like this so you can replicate this at us at a school level as well the end goal is 95 percent so if you work your way back to 75 percent um historical averages then this year the goal would be 79 regular attendance so today's data was pulled on the 70th day of school so that means a student that has been in attendance 55 days or more
055has met this year's goal of 79 um i'm going to move through this that was just our quarantine counts which you all have those slides for so this is what it looks like to meet the 79 goal right now on the 70th day of school we have about 1.2 percent of our students not in that range the rest are in that 79 regular attendance range and that pie chart broken down into ranges of days absent you can see there are nine 1973 students who have not missed a day over on this side you can see there are students that have missed 55 to 70 days so these are our high chronically absent students and so on and so forth so these are just date ranges of absences remembering that our goal is the 79 percent
056this year and then as usual breaking this down by building with the 79 um goal in mind for this year so for example 106 students met the 79 percent uh or were below 79 percent and 534 were above at adams same with secondary 79 goal for this year and then finally just some next steps to consider more integration with our pbis efforts at each school site so we have we are in years year six of implementation of that support system and it's highly effective so leaders and team leaders can integrate attendance into that already robust system um also we've been working really intensively with ospi and esd 105 and outside agencies to ramp up a re-engagement project to address the needs of those thanks are we going to rob me shall we okay can you
057let me know what those acronyms mean because i have no idea how to interpret those so positive behavior interventions and supports and then education service district 105 which is our region here and then our state office of superintendent and any other agencies so um just stay tuned for more updates on that yakima was identified as a higher needs district and will be receiving some more support in this area so i have updates on that as we work out the details of that and that is it thank you shelby are there any questions from the board i do have one question on your last statement what does higher needs entail what what what's the criteria for that i've not seen the criteria i was just notified in an email that we were identified in terms of
058attendance as a higher needs district i would assume because it's coming from ospi it has to do with our regular attendance rates and historical data and current data but i don't know that yet i just know they've been reaching out a lot and so has esd105 any other questions president rice can i ask a question of course uh shelby i guess kind of to follow up on that is there a difference in the definition of regular attendance between districts around the state noaa the state defines it the same for every public school in our state so it's a 90 percent regular attendance is the goal okay thank you yeah any other questions thank you shelby thank you at this time uh i'll inform the board that there was an event last evening with staff which
059was a modified calendar q a that was hosted by myself dr darling kirsten federer and we had the presence of john mishra mishka who is the assistant superintendent over that has oversight over the modified calendar component for ospi it went very well we were able to record the entire presentation and to make that accessible very shortly and here this evening in addition is an update from our executive director of hr uh will cerrett well thank you dr green good evening members of the board colleagues yes will did i leave you out i didn't leave you out today no okay good good short memory it's totally fine um so this will be my last update to the board regarding calendar committee uh prior to our official offering of our recommended calendar at our next official board
060meeting on the 18th i shouldn't say official but our next evening board meeting on the 18th of january uh our our committee continues to move forward on interpreting multiple survey sources our district survey through the thought exchange won't close until this sunday the 19th so rather than sharing data prematurely about the survey and how things are looking we've narrowed choices down to two calendars um for our final kind of putting it out there for our our final review and um look from our yea ypa group district and um we've got i think we still have a little work to do when it comes to what our final calendar will look like there's still some some meetings that need to take place so i don't i don't have a whole lot to report this evening i
061know that some of the members of the board may be expecting like hey this is where we are this is what it looks like i feel like it would be premature to to share any kind of final recommendation until our our committee has met our final meeting prior to submitting our recommendation to the board on the seventh will be 6th of january and we've set aside quite a bit of time for conversation to make sure that we've covered all of our bases and that we've pulled all of our data sources together and that what we present to the board um has solid thought behind it and rationale and therefore we can present and be prepared for whatever questions uh come from the board regarding that presentation but i would have be happy to answer specific
062questions from the board around process or where we are uh if there are any any questions from board members well um could you verify for me that we have some schools that are doing parent meetings virtually to talk about um the modified uh calendar what a modified calendar is yeah yes i can confirm that we've had i believe most if not all of our schools have held informational evenings for parents and their staff to talk about exactly that defining what a modified calendar looks like the thought behind it how it's designed to support learning for students prior to the end of any kind of final finality of a grading period uh and so those are i think our final meetings will be happening this week uh prior to schools closing down for the winter break
063good thank you any other questions from board members i gotta say i'm looking forward to seeing what the recommendation is so am i thank you well absolutely all right president rice members of the board we're coming pretty close to the end of the superintendent report i would just like to flag though for will if he's around longer the ssac presentation will have some feedback from our students around a modified calendar and that's a little bit later in next report or upcoming report a couple more items principals lee and lucero at mcclure and martin luther king respectively successfully maintained their national board certification which is a great accomplishment first of all earning that uh certification but then maintaining it while uh leading in their capacity during a pandemic so celebration to them and as we hear
064of any more of our leaders that have reached that pinnacle we will bring them to the board those were the two that we were uh sure of at the time of this uh this meeting the equity audit has been completed as part of the information the survey that has gone out to the students and staff and community so it's not the full report but a survey and i felt that it was important to update the board that during the course of the equity audit survey and again the equity audit recommendations will come to us at the end of january but the survey itself was completed by school leaders uh 443 school-based staff members 87 non-school-based staff members parents guardians caregivers and 684 students are there any questions about the equity audit survey which those are
065the numbers i have i'm not sure if i have any more information that i would be able to share then i will i will close with one last item and that is our board time with phone interviews with aaron jones has been nailed down for a day for a date and i believe a barb the 25th of january so we are we are looking for a commitment from all five board members so that we can schedule her one day uh to conduct those introductory sessions uh they're at a half an hour each i don't know barb are we looking for i don't think we're looking for account for calendar dates now but just to bring it to the attention of the board the barb will reach out about the 25th and we are trying to
066schedule her during the day so that she can get out or late in the afternoon early in the morning or late in the afternoon we know that there will be some flexibility but please work with bar bar please work with the board you bet and that one's going to be off phone calls she doesn't need to come in but correct correct if there are no other questions i'll turn the time back over to president rice thank you dr green um next item on the agenda is the monthly financial update dr green are you leading into this or are we going just straight to becky i think we will just go straight to becky this evening becky hey becky it's all yours well thank you dr green and president rice members of the board here is
067your monthly financial update for the general fund as of uh november 30th 2021 just a couple items of interest are november enrollment slightly decreased by 57 fte compared to the october enrollment um but we are only 19 fte below the 21 22 budgeted um as a reminder we budgeted flat based on the decrease that we saw last year so um that's good news that we're only 19 below and then barb could you just please go back the other item of interest for november was the buses um we did order buses in 2021 you've heard me mention that and they were delayed in arriving here due to the pandemic but as of november we were informed that they've been state inspected certified detailed and licensed so we expect those buses very soon to arrive to start
068transporting our students okay so you can go ahead and advance barb thank you here is the k12 ale enrollment trend um you can see the slight decrease there between october and november and then the next slide has our across all programs um aafte stands for average annual full-time equivalency comparison and this compares against our budget so we budgeted 15-7-11 and we're currently at 15 6 82. okay next time this is our revenues the trending um just slightly above budget and you can go to the next slide this is the cash flow um just as a reminder for our esser funding as we are spending our esser funds it is a grant that's claimable so we spend it in one month and we receive the revenue the following month when we make the claim so just
069to point out to you the cash flow is trending just about the same as um the expenditures were [Music] we are spending out then we would get the revenue in the following month so i just want to point out the cash flow is trending about where i projected for budget um all right you can go to the next slide here's our total total expenditures against budget or slightly above which is expected and anticipated and go ahead barb thank you here's the payroll trend you can see that we um are above the budget of line we're just below october um payroll and the next slide here's our supplies and materials turning just below budget for november and go ahead and go to the next slide and here is our sr2 expenditures in across the 10 categories
070on the top line is the totals for um the spending we had 22.6 million available as of 11 30 21 we've spent 11.2 keep in mind that this spans across from last year into this year this is not just since september of this year so this is a 20 21 and 21 22 expenses today we have encumbered at 8.4 with a balance of 2.9 on our sr2 funds any questions when does the s or two funding have to be um expended september of 2023. okay and yeah and then esser 3 2 september 30th 2024. okay it's important for me to remember those dates for some reason so thank you for that and thank you especially for the detail that you provide on the breakout breakdown of the esser funding expenditures and encumbrances um not all
071districts are as transparent as we are are being about the expenditure of those funds and i appreciate your work on that becky thank you thank you any other questions for becky okay thank you becky uh next on the agenda is the presentation from the superintendent student advisory council dr green do you want to open this up briefly i'm very excited to hear from our students tonight and i'm very grateful to our equity uh program manager marcelo scandaleri for his work and leadership with this group i like you and on pins and needles to hear about all of the great events that are planned and actually rolling out so again lion's share of the credit obviously to our students and with that marcelo yeah i will also be very quick and make sure that our students
072get most of the floor because they are incredible in doing most of the work and the whole goal behind this is to get student voice heard more um and just a quick blurb the main idea is that we're just trying to figure out how to make student voice more of a reciprocal relationship where students are getting just as much out as they're putting in and making sure that we're working shoulder to shoulder with them and they'll talk a lot about that during this presentation but i just want that to be a a bug in everyone's ear of how do we make this more reciprocal in the two-way relationship and shoulder-to-shoulder work and with that i will pass it off to our student leaders thank you mr scanberry so look at those slides presented connor for
073those who may not um have met you all yet as you come on could you just introduce yourself and give a little tell us a little bit about why you are part of this group of course yes uh we have some personal bits also scattered uh throughout the presentation as well uh but a quick intro for me i'm connor lincoln uh connor can remember we have to um speak slowly tonight because we have a translator okay thank you thank you for the reminder sanderson uh so i'm conor lincoln a senior at ac davis high school i'm also an id student and involved in asb and a number of other committees i've been involved with student voice at the district level since the beginning of the superintendent advisory council last year and with that we can
074get our presentation started and we'll have um unless valeria cleo you'd like to introduce yourselves now and then we can move through the slides all together hi i'm valeria garza i'm a sophomore at eisenhower high school and one of the reasons i joined this ssac was mainly so i could be a student advocate not just for ike and not just for people like me of color but so i could express my opinions and somehow make a difference in the district even when after i'm gone yeah um good evening everyone my name is cleopatra cook i'm also a senior at davis high school and me and connor know each other quite well as we have many classes together i guess a quick blurb on why i'm a part of this work is just like i'm sure
075how connor and melody i feel is that i recognize the importance of student voice and i wanted to be a part of that as well i will talk about a little more in the presentation but generally is that um i didn't get to have many opportunities um to kind of express my perspectives um and my opinions and just being in something um so great and so vast as this where it brings a change to my community and affects um really everyone that i know and not just a smaller portion but something that was really meaningful to me all right so with that we'll get started and so we are the three of us we are the lead fellows of this year's superintendent student advisory council and we are so excited to be talking with you
076all tonight about what equitable student voice look like over this last calendar year and then hopefully preface it what it can become over the next several months connor could you slow down just a little bit more i know you talk fast and i know that it's it's difficult but um the translator may be having a hard time keeping up with you of course thank you uh president rice so uh we are the lead fellows of this year's superintendent's student advisory council and we are so excited to address what uh equitable student voice has looked like over this past year and how it's going to proceed through the council and through other forums over the next several months through the duration of this year the 2020 through 2021 ssac was the district's first foray into student
077voice and decision making and in reflecting considerable progress in integrating youth voices from secondary schools across the district it earned the yakima schools foundation's championship of youth award this team worked on a variety of issues through engaging with guest speakers creating dialogue through breakout sessions and creating solutions through emphatic sharing and discussion one of these was mental health the ysd as pushed by this council then contracted sources of strength to start organizing programs structures and three high schools here in yakima in fact davis will be kick-starting staff training in january to be followed shortly by student training and the launch of the tier 2 program another topic was educational equity we dug deep to talk about courageous conversations and give feedback on the equity policy being formulated by the ysd's separate equity coalition this coalition
078was a diverse grouping of leaders and stakeholders from across the yakima valley from school administrators to students to teachers and parents we worked around the philosophy of co-design which is the practice of designing with stakeholders not just for stakeholders this collaborative policy development process lasted from december through april april where we read other policies around the state discuss their strengths and weaknesses and work together to draft a framework that was both comprehensive and understandable and this couldn't have been accomplished without students leading the way from researching to writing to actually presenting their ideas to you the board of directors who approved it unanimously in june student voice is something rare we often don't get a seat at the table which is why i've been so passionate about wanting to fight for my ideas while i
079come from a private school i've seen the ways that families are broken and how lives are shattered equity is about making sure we are supporting everyone in our community empowering them to succeed fair is not always equal and equal is not always equitable like teen moms students trapped in gang violence kids with separated parents they all need specific supports for their unique situations they need different support structures and resources than the b-plus student struggling in speech and debate so i'm sorry because you are reading you are reading very fast and you're not giving me enough time to interpret so i need you to make some more process uh every single time that you make a period thank you sure um so speaking from my perspective like i mentioned in the beginning um i've had many
080experiences where i've been denied opportunities of leadership due to other factors like popularity and inequitable standards um things that don't really apply to leadership standards and this has been in school and in extracurricular activities being a part of this work has truly allowed me to utilize my student voice in a way that does impact my community and my peers around me and kind of integrate it into many structures and see it just manifest itself like the equity audit when i was when that was given to me um it was just crazy to see the work that i had put kind of um becoming tangible so that was great um this work of equity that we've all participated in allows me to cultivate my passion for justice that was derived from said personal experiences for example
081i was able to voice my opinions perspectives and experiences about my treatment at school and the effect of its environment within the intensive work on the equity policy and students have led the way uh in each part of these processes from the councils the coalition so right after our first equity coalition meeting uh dr pimpleton who has since left us for from marysville school district and dr green asked the student members of the group to formally draft their own thoughts so over winter break valeria and i helped coordinate the efforts of half a dozen plus youth members in the coalition to compose an initial memorandum of understanding on equity and education like excellence so this gave us the opportunity to really spread our rings and work on our own as a youth cohort promoting our
082voice on our own terms as student leaders it also allowed me to expand my personal philosophy as well reframing equity not as equal outcomes nor necessarily equal opportunity but the empowerment and most liberation of the individual from group identity as their own person of dignity and promise by creating and sustaining positive varied supports for our diverse intellectual and demographic communities and so throughout the coalition and student council it was our voices and those of many valuable student colleagues across the district that powered progress and challenged district leaders to reimagine systems of leadership and wealth and that takes us directly to the internship program and so after the policy was passed in in june uh we three-upped the ante and created a program to continue uh continue tackling these intertwined issues of educational justice and student
083leadership and so we kind of structured our work around four pillars the first creating explainers about educational justice for the public and community modules the second looking at how the ssac worked in that last year seeing if it was possible to jump start momentum to create more student advisory councils and improve student voice around the district and then finally looking at whether a student town hall would be a good idea so we can dig a little bit more deeply into those real briefly rej represents racial and educational justice which is the idea that we ought to be more effectively using and expanding the resources we have to support and empower student achievement dei refers to the integrated objectives of diversity equity and inclusion these ideas center our attention on making sure we nurture a community
084of voices from all backgrounds traditions and views in fact we learn best when we are exposed to new ideas and perspectives even more than that our commitment to equity commits us to providing the right tools to succeed for each student to learn and grow at a high level in a targeted individualized fashion to make sure that everyone has meaningful opportunities to achieve their academic and social and emotional goals finally inclusion realizes a culture of respect and welcoming attitudes that bring people in and value them for who they are not just what they bring to the table in fact later this year in the ssac we'll refine these modules that define these concepts in greater detail for our community parents students and educators and continue to ensure that they align with both the boards and our
085students vision for educational excellence in our second area of work we also spend time reviewing documents and impacts from last year's council writing and assessment and engaging with our district leaders including our very own former president rice and trying to do and trying to better understand what we can do better as a youth leadership team this year this research was provided to our administrative directors so that they could set in place a more equitable and effective system for this year but we also wanted to expand student leadership from weird google meets as right now to real in person school discussions thus we worked on developing a blueprint for principal student advisory councils which are basically smaller versions of the district-wide superintendent student advisory council in addition to the club-based models of student representation and cooperation
086in davis's pirate council and eisenhower's student senate both schools are developing these systems currently davis high school has an active principal student advisory council having met for the first time with most of its 18 participating members yesterday during advisory among very discussions the session included breakdowns of school staff teams and how student voice can be integrated into each focusing on citing students onto different performance based staff committees like ilts and mtss structures and no project however was as big as the student town hall we were able to pull off initially a pie in the sky kind of idea formed over the summer this endeavor became a little manifestation of teamwork makes the dream work and while we were blessed with an amazing network of resources and supports including the strong backing of directors via then
087beckett thank you it was students both coordinators and volunteers that really made everything come together so we put together a logistical blueprint made sure yep made sure we steered clear of any legal problems for the district by talking to mr no and then reached out to all four candidates simultaneously after locking down a venue we secured translation services and assembled a team of volunteers mostly students to make sure every aspect of the event went smoothly this required a lot of stakeholder engagement interfacing with administration officials to various student committees we work to broaden our base of support to be inclusive of those diverse institutions we also ran an intensive promotional campaign from posters to social media and class announcements to school email we even ran a letter to the editor in the yakima herald republic
088and leverage the ysd's new communications platform parent square so the bottom line is that nothing is impossible we're working to encourage our fellow ssac members and change makers that they can dream big and work smart to further their ideas and effective and equitable education in the district themselves right now in the council this year the ssac will be divided along a two-track system advisory members and fellowship members the advisory track is primarily a low-lift commitment for students who are passionate about discussing various district initiatives and perspectives while the fellowship track will be action oriented we as lead fellows will provide support where needed taking a leadership role in the consulting on prod on projects and embedding within teams to help catalyze learning skill building and progress and not only is there a clear channel of
089communication between ssac members and dr green and mr scambulary there is also a direct line of exchange between student leaders and the board itself already informal communication has taken place and benefited our district in our recent december session the council deliberated on the balance calendar planning process and offered their suggestions thoughts included some critical feedback around summer and family disruptions including the idea that more frequent multi-week breaks may interrupt learning more significantly however the overall consensus was strongly in favor of the transition ranging from affirmations of past experiences with a balanced calendars positive benefits to the school social academic teacher retention and school morale improvements of such a shift this came about as a result of informal team response system our lead fellow team noticed director walkers and curry into weathering into whether student voice
090was being considered in this transition this became a strong recommendation to superintendent student advisory council administrator mr scamilari who tabled it for the agenda during the dedicated advisory session as fellowship tracks student leaders engage with departmental and interstate holder teams as they work towards their project objectives we can also look forward to developing a dedicated liaison role between the board of directors and the superintendent student advisory council in order to bridge the gap between district supervisors and students a rotating slate of ideas and discussions can be shared between both bodies and integrating your decision making scope with the unique focus and vision of student leaders may prove invaluable the advisory track is all about two-way communication for example what are students lives like right now what is going on in schools what do students care
091about and what do they envision to be a better model they will be providing critical feedback on fellowship action projects and can help through focus groups team surveys and departmental advisory cohorts in the monthly 90-minute meetings approximately 30 minutes will be dedicated to sustaining dialogue in the advisory theme track of discussion and ideation as of right now 20 of the 65 20 of the council's 65 members are purely advisory task representatives and that brings us to the second mode the fellowship so the fellowship track is designed to include that existing advisory work within that first track and then include a bit more the team-based action project so this is designed to actualize a student voice in an unprecedented manner that reaches beyond the scope of a few students and seeks to empower several project teams
092in a collective way institutionally so harnessing mr scanvillery's deep experience and our own perspectives as guides for students this program which currently has 44 engaged students can be a powerful engine of student led change there could be as many as five main different forms that these projects could take over the course of this coming year as well so there are internal presentations such as sharing resources or new studies with staff and teachers like instructional leadership teams you could have state level research and reporting including the examination of other district programs in eastern washington and analyzing new and different areas of growth and change that could positively impact our student communities there could be an event like the student town hall last october that could take the shape of a coordinated mental health awareness week with
093promotional efforts informational resources staff trainings and even interactive activities on site for example there could be uh more planning done with administrations like redesigning school spaces or student programs and finally for you know a fifth uh main type a communications centered approach such as like a strategic marketing campaign to promote either like the health clinic or a social service uh or an extracurricular program that's launching up at multiple schools um so right now we have some project ideas ranging from student health to culturally responsive practices and school start times to even climate and culture media campaigns and so the sample timeline for these projects stands uh looks somewhat like this on on the slide here so in stage one we have the intros and the the overview of the program including expectations and objectives and
094we've been working on that uh for the last two meetings stage two features some more team-based breakouts and collaborative uh problem solving and assessment so planning a little bit of co-design there um so this could take the shape of what one of two interrelated forms so there's the problem of practice idea which emphasizes uh identified needs of our student communities and then works to address them or there's the theory of change model which looks more closely at like the status quo student dynamics and then look at what needs to be adapted and improved in order to better facilitate student success where students are so in other words problems of practice look more deeply at systems and how district routines or policies are impacting students while theories of change approaches take a more student oriented angle
095looking at what we want to achieve and trying on solutions towards that end looking towards the future now stage three looks at the actual interdepartmental work with those teams so communication project development and management and then implementation of those goals um so this is kind of supervised by regular check-ins from mr scan valerie and you know communication with the lead fellow team and then opportunities for peer review collaboration and even large group discussion in those main monthly meetings as well and then finally stage four just looks at that final share out um and those reflections on what was achieved uh what was learned and then you know potential next steps uh either through the summer in another program or uh coming through the next unit and that brings us to the end we're just like
096just i'm so sorry i'm behind just a second give me a sec never mind i lost the text uh would you like uh me to rewind uh by a paragraph uh yeah yes just a paragraph please thank you okay i will stage three wait would that work yes that works thank you okay my apologies again i'm sorry so stage three um tackles the actual interdepartmental work so you have communication project management and development and then actually looking at actualizing those goals so this period is a time for actual teamwork and then we have check-ins peer review some time for collaboration and even in some cases large group discussion in those monthly meetings then we finally have stage four and that describes the final share out process so there's going to be a reflection of what
097was achieved uh what could be learned from what happened and then potential next steps that can either be you know scheduled out for the summer you know in a potential new program there or falling into the next year of the superintendent student advisory council thank you we're here to give all the fellowship leaders support guide their steps and help as needed in the wide array of action projects under development above all though we're here to advise and support each individual student if needed given our diverse experiences and insights into these kinds of efforts we also spend time working with teams and even provide feedback on an individual basis several days before each meeting we send a rundown of what programs policies and projects we will be discussing on the advisory side as well as project
098management communications and leadership training on the fellowship side so thank you we deeply appreciate your support as a board and your encouragement over the last year and look forward to the uh ensuing several months of this remaining 20 21 22 year thank you so much um so i don't know if we have time for questions um with that i'll hand it back off to mr scandal no thank you so much for sharing uh amazing job and uh no i will you guys covered it all incredibly so i'll pass it off to the board if they have any questions any questions from board members well i'm just first just a comment i'm really impressed with the degree of work that you put into this i don't know how you find the time being a full-time student
099to put something like this together i'm also impressed with the number of students that seem to be involved in schools what what are some specific projects that you have in mind coming up for the rest of this year so right now uh we have several teams uh there's uh one or two looking at mental health there's a few looking at uh uh educational equity um and social justice work expanding that um i believe we also have um some others looking at school schedules um so those are three examples coming off the top of my head um i believe we have as many as eight teams that are working on on different objectives right now and trying to do some design around that it's likely that those will probably narrow a bit and if you may
100merge given you know student student burnout or you know the different dynamics of representation and being able to attend meetings and consistently engage um but i would say we're looking at about a half a dozen okay objectives okay then each team reports out some recommendations to your total group and then that group sorts out what they want to communicate to the administration or to the board okay so what are you guys going to do in your spare time that's it that's a pretty aggressive schedule any other questions from board members yeah connor clio and valeria a really great job on the presentation here um i think i've i i've said this to you before i i truly think that your generation is going to change the world and the work that you're presented today i
101think is is is the first step of that so i thank you for all of the work and effort you've put into this my question for each of you is if the school board gave each of you a magic wand what is one thing that you would change today about our school district no i mean sure for me sorry i just i just the first thing i thought of i feel we already have a lot of student engagement but i guess i just probably wish for every student to be as driven as like cleo and connor because i know from the work that they've done and the things that they do outside of school if every student was as given as they are i feel like we would have a great great school district and
102everything would just work out smoothly thank you well that's that's awfully kind of a flurry to say and i would say igormente back to to cleon valeria uh i think looking at our attendance rates and looking at engagement i think mental health is a very large piece of that so being able to sort out what our mtss structures look like um and how staff is is actively engaging um the resources and supports that are already being provided to students and making sure those are communicated clearly i think would be something that would be very nice to to help straighten out over the next few months and a magic wand would be immediate but thinking more realistic um for me i think i'd kind of bounce off of what connor would say with um focusing on
103mental health and particularly right now what comes to mind is like the teaching and learning structure um just kind of almost echoing what connor has to say i have a diverse friend group or multiple friend groups where um you know me and connor are full iv diploma candidates and then i have some friends that are not as involved um in school and just seeing the disparities of like engagement and teaching and learning and how different the environment is between teachers that are required to teach higher level understanding versus teachers that might still have regular education um while they're still both teachers i notice um when hearing about their day that the environment is quite different and so i think if i or if i were to have this magic wand um i think it would
104have to point towards uh mental health and teaching and learning um and just having that be addressed um and a brighter light which i think we're on our way to right now so maybe we won't need the magic wand thank you so much for that it's always really interesting to hear what what your thoughts are so thank you again for the presentation excellent job on that and uh look forward to continuing to engage with you with each of you and to continue to hear your voice and the voice of all of our students thank you so much any other questions i i do have some comments just want to make and maybe perhaps a question but i just want to commend you for the good work a good presentation that you presented today you know
105i think you're opening my eyes i'm speaking for myself a little bit more in terms of the value of the student voice right hearing about students opinions their values their beliefs perspectives whether it's good or bad right we we as a school board we as uh administration so our teachers the adults right in the district need to hear from from students because i i i'm kind of getting the sense that and i kind of felt this or discerned this with you guys that you're you felt empowered energized you felt more part of when you have a part or say in how you're being educated i would believe that it motivates you more right you engage more and i see that spreading through the whole district right to all students that they say okay i have
106a voice people are listening to me and so then they participate even more in their academics which i see is going to help to improve or increase academic or organizational success right and i like how you guys are thinking about systems and examining systems and so forth so i can see this paying off in the in the near future in terms of academic performance improving and opportunity and access for all students i would say next time you report to the board that i kind of heard some personal experiences in terms of facing inequities within the district and i as a board member would like to hear more about that if there's some iniquities in the district that you're facing i i think it's it's um good to call it what right what we're saying call
107it out right and and talk about that if if that's the case that way you know we can be transparent about it and that can also help to institute change in those areas so but again i just heard that theme throughout your presentation and i would would request next time let's talk let's talk about that let's hear a little bit more about those challenges those inequities that you're seeing right that other students are are are reporting uh during this process but once again thank you for your work and you're be commended i'm sure you can you can pack this up into a nice little uh consultant package and go to every school district in washington and help them to develop the same initiative in terms of increasing student voice in their school district so once
108again good job guys thank you raymond any other questions for the our three students okay i want to join the rest of the board and thanking you connor and valeria and cleo for hanging in there with us as we you know worked our way through the agenda um your presentation was excellent it really provided us with a lot of good material to think about and to consider and i too look forward to seeing the results of your work for the rest of this year and hopefully you're growing up some of some students to follow in your footsteps as you move on to bigger and better things and and graduate out of our system so thank you both thank you all for being here tonight we really appreciate all the work that you have put in
109last year with the equity policy with the student town hall and all the work that you're doing right now to improve the school district and make it a better place for our students and staff so thank you so much for everything that you've done marcelo do you have anything to um finish us up with here no we're just very excited to continue this work and we'll definitely continue chatting about how to integrate the the board and the ssac um more cohesively uh moving forward and excited to see how that fleshes out yeah thank you guys so much thank you marcelo dr green do you have any closing thoughts i thank cleo connor valeria for your well presented and prepared presentation for all of us this evening i would call attention to what director navarro shared
110and that is to truly know what is going well and what is not going well at no point was the superintendent student advisory council designed to not be open and transparent so it's wonderful to hear that directive coming from one of our board members and i would simply just compare it to a fairy tale where we kiss the frog and it transforms into something beautiful it is your position to find the frogs and bring them to us here in the school board and make us kiss them and change what's happening based on your your insight and your direction so thank you watch out we may be raining frogs thank you guys for being here tonight i know that you probably have other things that are calling your name you're welcome to stay but we completely
111understand if you choose to sign off and and take care of those things that are pulling at you next item on our agenda are comments from the public on agenda items barb we still have no one who has um signed up for comments correct correct know what nobody has signed up okay so just as a reminder the first comment period comes before the consent agenda and it is for items that are on the current meetings agenda there is a comment period at the end of the meeting for items that are not on the agenda that the community wishes to share with us next we have approval of the consent agenda tonight's consent agenda um as as with all of our consent agendas is an opportunity for the board to dispense with business that is routine
112and common and some of it is is delegated to the superintendent but the board has to approve others of these actions are identified in statute or rule that the board has to approve them so um sorry i don't know the birds are asleep so i don't know what started them off tonight tonight's consent agenda is consists of approval of minutes for november 1st 8th 16th 22nd and 29th approval of board rating reports for policies 1000.2.3 and 1000.4.4 notification of approval of warrants for november 2021 budget status reports for november 2021 approval of personnel actions and approval of out-of-endorsement assignments any board member has the right to remove any item from the consent agenda for a separate action and or discussion does anyone wish to do so [Music] i would like to suggest that we remove
113item three approval of board rating reports for policies one thousand point two point three and one thousand point four point four is there objection no [Music] okay so we'll remove that for separate action and or discussion the remaining items one two four five six and seven remain on the consent agenda do i have a motion to approve the consent agenda as submitted so moved second move by norm seconded by graciela is there any discussion no okay barb could you call the role please yes ms via nueva yes president rice yes mr navarro jr hi mr walker hi mr beckett yes motion passes five to zero thank you now we'll look at um those two board policies one thousand point two point three is the financial conditions and activities all five board members responded to this
114the survey that was sent out following the monitoring report all five agreed that the superintendent is in compliance with all elements of the the policy and i'm looking for the one comment that i found in here and of course now i can't find it does any board member have anything to share about this particular policy okay the one thing that i found in here barb you might remember that we had i don't remember which policy it was but the comment got kind of morphed in with the survey results so it was either compliant not compliant making progress and then there's a comment that is part of that shows up as an outcome of a question within the um that particular element of the policy and it's question nine and the comment was just none so
115um i think we we had this problem before with some of the other policies and you talked to the surveymonkey people and they figured that out so we need to do the same thing with this one with question nine and i'll be better at checking these before i post them from here on out sorry about that not a problem i i'm attributing it to technical gremlins okay um if there is no other discussion on this particular policy we will set this aside for a moment and then look at 10.4.4 which is the monitoring the superintendent's performance all five board members responded to this survey all five agreed that the superintendent is um the the board is compliant with all elements of this of this policy and the same problem barb um popped up in question
11611. right on this one um right now so um the only let me see there's another comment in here somewhere i thought there was but i just needed to update the date in the answers of february 1st because in the question i updated it to february 1st okay and then the answer i failed um i failed to update that from february 1st all right thank you for doing that um and then on the on question 12 three board members felt that um annually semi-annually reviewing this policy is sufficient and two believe that annual is sufficient i'd like just a brief discussion on this from board members if i could martha if i recall this policy used to be reviewed on an annual basis and when we went through uh the hiring process and bringing in
117a new superintendent the board had discussed changing the frequency of this policy to uh twice a year uh to keep tabs and make sure that you know we're developing that trust in the new superintendent and so i don't recall which way i i voted on this policy but i would certainly feel comfortable moving back to an annual review of this policy okay i believe i was also one of the ones that indicated um and i felt that annual was sufficient on this and i didn't have the past history but i i felt that like most of the reviews i think annual is sufficient on that okay any other input from board members i think just because of the pandemic and so forth the semi-annual that's why i agreed to continue with the semi-annual just just
118with the current situation that we're in it just provides more um more opportunities to to link with the superintendent just to see check on each other see how we're doing and um again it's just the challenging times that are kind of influenced me too to remain with the semi-annual review okay and ryan you probably don't have enough background on the board yet to have much of an opinion about this but i don't want to leave you out well thank you you're you're absolutely right i as i'm going through these i'm still kind of learning um and of course i responded the you know semi-annual is sufficient not knowing uh some of the background that has been shared here with the difference between an annual review i um i get the impression after a few meetings
119that we do a pretty good job keeping tabs on um uh everything uh going on here so it certainly seems if the if the board is of the mindset that an annual review would be sufficient um i would i would have no complaint with that okay um do we want to make a decision about this tonight or do we want to um hold this over for a deeper discussion at the retreat i say let's just take care of it now okay because our treat agendas probably has a few items anyways it's starting to fill up a little bit yeah um if my recollection to graciela is in that with the new superintendent we wanted to just kind of have a more frequent uh touchstone about this particular policy trevor's been with us for two and
120a half years now is that right so i'm i'm of the opinion that um we could move to an annual review of this and we can always say mid-year if something comes up we'd like to do another review of this particular policy is because we have an annual review does not require that we that we keep it annually we can at any point during the year do another review of the policy would you um be comfortable with that raymond i have no problem with that okay all right barb um we have a consensus on the board about moving this to an annual review could you make that change on your policy governance calendar yes i will okay thank you so much um because um all five board members uh completed the policy and all five
121agreed that all elements of these two policies are being met and in accordance with our past practice and and um individual board policy regarding uh the survey and monitoring reports i would entertain a motion to accept both both the one thousand point four point four and one thousand point two point three monitoring report surveys this evening as submitted so moved move by norm second seconded by graciela is there any further discussion barb could you call the role please ms villanueva yes president rice yes mr navarro jr hi mr walker hi mr bucket yes motion passes 5-0 thank you barb we've reached our second opportunity for comments from the public and as barb indicated no one had signed in by our deadline this afternoon so um mr superintendent do we have a need for executive session
122we do have a need for an executive session for how long for 30 minutes and the purpose is for potential kerner potential litigation with legal counsel and lease purchase actually just the former just the former current or potentially litigation with uh legal counsel okay all right do i have a motion to move into executive session moved by norm seconded by graciela barb could you call the role please ms villanueva yes president rice yes mr navarro junior hi mr walker hi mr beckett yes motion passes 5-0 thank you um i've got 9 18. uh do you guys want a couple minutes of a break before we get go into executive session yeah yes okay all right let's reconvene an executive session at we'll give you five minutes so nine uh 9 24. um our next meeting
123is the retreat um which is i think on january 7th if reminder to the board that if you have any topics that you'd like to have discussed at the retreat get them to barb i'll be meeting with her on the week after christmas to finalize the agenda for the retreat so you have until what are we meeting the 29th bar yes the 29th and the retreat's on the 10th that's a monday oh god you clarified i had it down as the 10th i never i i can't remember that that date for the retreat for some reason um thank you for the reminder um so if you can get any comments to barb by the 28th for retreat possible retreat topics then we will um can have a discussion about that and get the agenda finalized
124anything else okay thank you guys the long meeting but we got a lot done have have a nice holiday nice vacation take some time off see you later thanks martha merry christmas you too anthony thank you merry christmas
