Good evening everybody and welcome to tonight's regular school board meeting up Monday May 1126. Like to call our meeting to order. We have met official compliance with all of our notifications. Roll call, please. >> Hey Olson, >> here. >> Sarah Schubert McCone >> here. Laura Gapsky >> here. >> Katherine Gman >> here. Lisa Fson here. Owen here, President Steve Olsson >> here. This time would you all please rise for our pledge of >> allegiance. I aliance to the flag of the United States of America to the republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all. This meeting is a meeting of the board of education held in public for the purpose of conducting the school district's business and is not to be considered a public community meeting. There
is a time for comments by members of the public during the meeting as indicated on the agenda. Members of the public wishing to address the board on any of the topics included on tonight's agenda may do so by signing up on the public comments comment signup sheet by the entrance prior to the start of the meeting. The board requests refraining from making any comments involving personally identifiable information about students, staff, or administration. Comments should be respectful, focused on the items being considered by the board, and will be restricted to 3 minutes in length. Action taken at today's meeting will be final approval unless otherwise noted. And do we have any >> members of the public wishing? No. >> Okay. Second disposition of minutes from April 20, 2026. Need a motion. Motion to approve. >> Second.
>> Motion a second to approve the minutes from April 2026. Is there any discussion? >> Hearing none. All those in favor signify by saying I. I. >> I. >> Opposed. Motion carries. Disposition of minutes from special session from May 4, 2026. Make a motion to approve the minutes from our special session on May 4th, 2026. >> Second. >> Motion and a second to approve the minutes from the special session. There any discussion? You will notice that I sent you the schoolboard roles and committees assignments for 2627. Lisa, I hit yours and it came up for your personal one. I didn't look to make sure that I got the uh school district one, but I'll I'll resend. Okay. interested yet. >> When you get time, you can take a look at that. Um, it was interesting
this year that many of you, most of you all want to be on the personnel and the teaching and learning committee, but we can only have three per committee, so we had to make some changes. But thank you very much for taking care of your duties. Uh, report from our superintendent or hang on. Any further discussion on special meeting minutes? Steve, just a quick I don't know who's managing this, but like my name's spelled wrong. Shell's is spelled wrong. >> I'm looking at the schoolboard roles and committees. >> Committee assignment, >> the one that I >> Yeah, >> I'll make corrections. >> Okay, thanks. >> This goes anywhere official. Is there any further discussion? Being none, all those in favor say I. >> I. >> Opposed. Motion carries. Next report of our superintendent. Last week,
Principal Kim O'Donnell from Four Corners gave us an update and uh was kind of nice because we had students in attendance and they were part of the whole presentation which makes it kind of cool. Tonight, our first presenter, Mr. Lever is our middle school principal. Welcome. >> Some folks with you. >> There's a big group here tonight. [laughter] >> Hi. Good evening. >> I'm Aaron Lever's principal at Spring Middle School and today I have some students with me. Lydia Shanger and Sam Stippiar. So we're going to jump right in if that's okay. See everybody? >> Yes, please. >> All right. So I like to start off sharing some data. So, I'm gonna jump right in. Maybe >> is it? You might need to check the side of it. Turn it on. >> Side is on.
>> Should be green. >> You should just put a little sign up there. >> Poor thing. >> It's You're right. You're right. Yes. >> All right. So, up with some maybe in the >> I can >> jump in. Okay. We have some metrics to share with you. >> [laughter] >> a 35% increase in attendance, a 65% decrease in behavior growth, and a 13.5 point increase on school rule forecast. >> Sweet. That day is great and all, but what do the students have to say? Over 700 students responded to our student survey. Yeah. >> Yeah. 93% of students report feeling valued at superior school. >> Students report that they have an adult at school that they can trust. >> And 87% of students reported that they feel they truly belong to a school. So some of
the stuff that can make students want to be here are different opportunities that the students have like our career fair. So the career fair is where over 800 eighth grade students at middle school explor opportunities during the annual career fair on Tuesday came to the SMS to the public purpose room to share their craft. Students were assigned to ask questions and especially for the best and big brand trades and careers and local history. >> Another reason is eighth grade leaders. One of the things eighth grade leaders do are fifth grade tours which are giving uh the incoming sixth graders a tour of the middle school and acquainting them to the school that they're going to be going to. And then another thing they do is sixth grade transition night, which is a night where parents
can come with their kids so they can kind of learn where their kids are going to be going next year as well. And then the first day of school is a day that the sixth graders have the middle school all to themselves. And seventh and eighth graders are not there except for the eighth grade leaders. The eighth grade leaders are in the hallways and in classrooms to help questions and with locks and sixth grader schedules. The last things I help with are Spartan start activities, which every Friday morning the eighth grade leaders, they head down to sixth grade Spartan starts and they lead the sixth graders through activities like heads up seven up or charades school has to offer are many murals and clubs with over 400 of our students participating in these clubs. They
take place after school and create create a great sense of community and belonging supporting that percentage from the survey. So we might be everything from swimming, tennis and pickle ball and even dungeons and dragons club. So everyone has something that [clears throat] they like or like someone. >> Thank you guys so much. are wonderful representatives of our eighth grade leadership team. Miss Prescott is here as well and she helps uh organize and and support these activities that you heard about today. So guys, great job. Thank you. >> Thank you guys. >> Quick wrap up. Um if we want to check out a couple of items on our CPR card, just like our wonderful students, we have wonderful staff at Spear Middle School. uh that work with our shared leadership team and our administration team and
our coaches. Uh we've done a lot of work this year on our CPR cart. I'm not going to go through every line item, but um we have done a lot of a lot of work around our PLC's. Um we're very organized and we started a dashboard this year so that all of our curriculum, our timelines, our calendars are all in one centralized location. That's wonderful for when our teams can't meet, especially our special education partners, so that they know where our gened partners are and their timeline on the curriculum so that we're always in coordination. So, really proud of that effort. Um, we've done things where, uh, teachers go and visit other classrooms to see how things are going. Uh, that was one of our agenda items or one of our CPR card um, piece
of components this year. Um, and again, we're mostly completed with our CPR card. We have a few things that are just ongoing like reviewing um CH CFR data. Sorry. And and so that's still kind of like an ongoing piece with our with our PLC team. So, really proud of our students, really proud of our staff. We're doing a great job as students. >> Yes. So that's kind of it for our our presentation today. Thanks. >> How many eighth grade leaders are there? [clears throat] Um we typically start with 30 and right now we have about 27. So >> nice. Thank you. >> And they've helped us with a variety of things this year. We did a business uh leaders at the middle school at the beginning of the year and they helped do a presentation.
We had some superintendent visit from other school districts this year. They helped kind of greet those folks. And then most recently, we had our Douglas County Superior Leadership Group come to the middle school, right? And they helped facilitate some of that, too. So, they've had a very You guys have actually had a pretty busy year this year with sharing. >> Yeah, they've done a ton of presentations just as well. So, they're they're wellversed in and supporting the middle schools. >> They also represent in the community. They've had uh they have sock drive in the fall. They have a food drive in the winter. And then they just finished their flapjack fundraiser for men. >> Oh yeah. >> Yeah. >> And it's great to have them uh on our fifth grade transition night when our parents
serving parents are coming in and they can really help us answer a lot of questions, point people in the right direction. It's just extra extra bodies in the building that know what's going on. So they're really super helpful. And then they get to come on the day. Uh we have a staggered start when our sixth graders are here by themselves uh on the first days of school and they're a huge help getting uh all of our sixth graders to where they need to go >> and helping with locks which is a very anxiety >> it's like old though once you do a >> but it is create a lot of anxiety. >> Yeah. >> Your transition night was well attended. uh more so than in the past couple of years. I thought the past couple
of years were well attended. I I we had every seat in the house filled. So that was >> what are those data from the student survey in terms of feeling valued and a sense of belonging compared to past years? Like are there any trends or >> um well we've seen significant improvement in that area. I don't have the the numbers but uh four years ago we were 50 60% in those areas. >> Yeah. >> So >> that's last four years have been um tremendous and my vision for us and I've talked to all of our staff about this. We need to make connections with our kids and our families. Um when we do that well and those numbers really improve but also our our kid outcomes start to really uh skyrocket and that's what we
are most of excited about but we can't do it without the connections and the relationships and that's why the the student survey I was extremely happy with our student surveys this year. Number one majority of the kids took it. U we have 833 kids or so and over 700 kids took the survey. That's a that's a big number. So, it's consistent data. It's good data. And then the the percentages of students that said that they strongly agree or agree with those statements uh is remarkable. >> Oh, sorry, my last part. How did you get such a high number over 700? They do it like in class or >> Yeah. So, Spartan Start is like uh if you're familiar with home room, ours is an hour long period or 55 minutes. So, we do a lot
of things during that time. We do our SEAL work. We do our math interventions, our reading interventions. Um, we do a a lot of work during that time. And what I recognized four years ago was that our kids were desperate for an adult connection. So, we also do that during that time frame. And all of our kids uh can get on their Google Slides and their laptop and we just pump out the survey through that and they all sit and take it during that first hour period. So we have that connection piece so they can talk with their teacher about questions along there. Uh but they they participated very well in in this this year's surve I think the number of kids surveys do previous years. >> Do you have like write in for those
percentages as well like why either why or why not >> comments? >> Yeah, >> we do. Yeah, >> I'm curious about the 87% what what what's the kind of why not? I can't remember exactly which one that was. >> Yeah. Um, some of our comments are good. Some of our comments are are they want to point something out. Um, so we don't share the comment section with our student population, but um, sometimes there's personal information in there, but >> right, >> um, even [clears throat] our comments where they're connecting with a specific teacher and we do share that. So, we want to get our teachers involved with those when we when they hear good comments through a survey like this. But, [clears throat] there's not a ton of that that's that goes on. There's not
a ton of commenting. There's just a handful of that. >> Yeah. >> Good stuff. >> Excellent. >> Thanks, Eric. >> Thank you very much. >> Thank you. >> And you do not have to. >> Yeah. I was >> I know you wanted to. >> Thank you so much. >> Thank you. >> Good idea. Go. >> You're fine. Great idea. >> You guys want to come over? >> Oh, stand up. Stand in here somehow. Sorry. >> No, you're fine. >> We should stand. I'll stand like this. Stand. >> Yeah. Right. Come on. Thank you all. >> Thank you. >> Great job. >> You're welcome to come anytime. >> And drum roll. >> Our last report, our student representative for this school year, Mr. Brendan Frell. meeting. >> I'm not sure exactly who's going to be filling
my role for next year, but >> and I should just make a comment on that. So, we don't have a president elected yet for student council, and we won't have one right away to start the year. So, we'll probably have somebody joining us probably in November next year is what I'm thinking. >> So, there's going to be somebody here to uh come report to you guys about how the start of the year. >> Great. So, some recent and upcoming events at SHS, the spring musical Matilda happened this weekend. It had a great turnout. Unfortunately, he's not able to make it, but I heard the performance went great. AP testing is in full swing. There's been a lot of I think positive attitudes towards AP testing that I've seen more than in years past. So, I
I've seen that kids are going into them a little more confident than usual. Scholarship night is coming up on Wednesday this week at 6 p.m. in the pack. That is the presentation of all of the school district affiliated scholarships. That's the Nelson's, the sub Nelson's, and all the smaller scholarships that are packaged into that. In some recent news, Spartan Manufacturing held its open house at the high school. I saw many of you there. It's good to see you guys getting out there, as well as the art department holding a Spartan Fiesta at the high school on that same day. We have a lot of home meets coming up. We have girls soccer at home this week. Baseball's at home. Track has a home meet. Girls lacrosse is at home. and JB boys golf ball golf
are all at home. So, it's it's a good way to start to close out the season, having some home meets, being able to and able to show your friends and family what you got going on there. Votes for Goats is back at SHS home games at fundraiser. Uh it was really popular last year and her beard was just figured I'd throw that in there. Veronica, she was not able to make it today, but she is hosting an Alzheimer awareness track meet this Thursday at the Spartan Sports Complex. Nice. >> It's going to be a home meet. It's a quad meet. So, we have three other schools coming in that we are competing against and it is a fundraiser for Alzheimer awareness. She's selling t-shirts and she did the Cesar senior project. And then band has
a concert on Friday at 6 PM in the pack. That's all I got for some general school news on some student council specific things. We are hosting a 5K fun run event called the Spartan Sprint at SHS this Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. There'll be a timing system, pace runners, and activities if you want to bring your kids. It's $10 cash entry at the door. you can just show up. So, it's gonna be a fun time. Running starts at 2:30 and doors open at 2. We have our senior dress up days next week. That's the uh dress like a senior citizen. >> Milwaukee yearbook. You walk around, sign everyone's t-shirt, all the fun stuff like that. >> Just doing a just doing a fun little dress up day week for the seniors. Close out
the year. And then we have a kind of an impromptu assembly in the works uh for the last week of school. Seniors will not be there. And that's I think a great opportunity to let the juniors kind of step up, give them a preview as to how next year is going to go with that. Give them some experience planning assembly and we might see the return of some teacher versus student games which I know is always ahead. And then the stu student council regular elections are underway and interviews were completed this week for candidates should be going out soon. I just wanted to thank the school board for and Dr. Sarzaki here for letting me come in and represent the students this year through my meetings and then also the wellness committee meeting as well.
I really appreciate you uh letting me come in and share the student voice and for listening to me. >> You did a great job. Very thorough. >> Great job. >> What's uh what's on the agenda for you next year? >> Next year I'm headed out to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. >> What's your major? >> Majoring in business finance. >> Yeah. >> Congratulations. said it. >> So, >> we've enjoyed your enthusiasm. >> Really appreciate it. >> Thank you. >> Sorry. >> No, don't. Um, yes. Congrats to you. Uh, so I know there's an unsanctioned water gun fight going on. What can you tell me about this? >> This is something that the sophomores have organized. I don't know. >> Whole lot about it. They called it sophomore splashing. And the way I
believe it works is everyone gets a everyone gets a target and you can can't get them out. You can't get them in school or at their house or at sports. >> Yeah. >> But you try and um blast them with a water gun out outside of school and the last person standing wins. >> Okay. So, it's only sophomores. >> It's only sophomores. Gotcha. Is >> this the one? Is this like the first time they like >> It's the first time. >> Hopefully, it's the first and the last. >> They talked to the principal, I heard, and came up with these parameters. >> They've got some established rules. >> That makes me more comfortable that >> Yeah, I not super sure. >> Okay. I didn't realize it was only a sophomore thing. So, all right. >>
They seem to be having fun with it. >> Yeah. Yeah. Thank you. >> Thanks. >> Thank you. >> We have one action item, consideration, overnight field trip request from Michael Horic for 8th grade students to attend Washington DC and New York City during spring break of 2028. >> Motion to approve. >> Second. >> Motion a second to nice field trip for 2028. There any further discussion? Hearing none. All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I. opposed. Motion carries. Next are our board committee reports from the personnel committee. One action item administration recommends approval of the May 2026 new hires and separations report. >> Motion to approve. >> Second. >> A motion and a second. Is there further discussion? All your attention that we do have two new names in in red. How are
we doing on math teachers? >> Well, our job's posted through Friday. >> Okay, we have there's a handful in there that we're going to interview. So, I'm crossing my fingers. Perfect. Any other discussion? Hearing none. All those in favor signify by saying I. I. >> I. Opposed. Motion carries. >> Motion to accept the personnel committee report. >> Second. >> Motion a second to accept the personnel committee report. Any further discussion? Hearing none. All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I. >> Opposed. Motion carries. Operations committee. Oneformational item. Committee to hold meeting on May 4, 2026. Cory Karen, the new director of buildings and grounds, gave an update on the Sperry Middle School front entrance. >> To approve it, >> second motion, a second to accept the operations committee report. Any further discussion hearing?
None. All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I. >> Oppose. Motion carries. Teaching and learning committee informationational items. Crystal Hinsman, director of curriculum and instruction, provided the following updates at the committee of the whole meeting on May 4, 2026. Staff development and elementary math curriculum updates. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Noah grant update. And we had teachers, science teachers from SMS, and some students that were here. That link is attached for anyone that needs to review it or to see it for the first time. Dean Hagen, our director of special education and student services, provided the following updates to the committee. An update on the annual joint federal notification JN packet that is also attached. And again, one of the first times in a long time we didn't have any real issues that
was reported on that report. So that significant progress by by Jen, I meant by Dena, I looked at Jen and there you go. We do have one presentation tonight. We welcome back Jennifer Willoughby, our director of early childhood and family education. >> Hello everybody. Um I just have a couple things I want to share. Just someformational items. Kindergarten transition. We had that last week uh Tuesday, May 5th. Um happens at all of our schools on the same night. It was it was a good event. It was a it was a nice night. I was able to make it around to all the schools. Uh it's an openhouse style event. We have we have scavenger hunts at all the buildings. Um kindergarten classrooms are open so families and students can take a peek and be in
there. And then we have some activities that families can do with their kiddos. Um we also have information that we share with families that night. Principals are there, counselors are there, uh PTO, PTA, um you know, every building's a little bit different in how they and who attends, but um for the most part that's kind of who's there for the evening. So, pictures were great. >> Pictures were great. Pictures are always great for room transition night. We have a um signing table that we started last year. This year we have giant uh real pencils that they could use. So, that was pretty fun. They could write their name with a giant pencil as they were signing into kindergarten. Um, and then, uh, kinderg 4K and really get kids ready. Just an update for right now.
I kind of always share this time of year. And then again, I'll be back in September to just give you an update on where we're at to start the year. But, um, as of right now, we have about 136 students enrolled, which is pretty close to where we were at last year. It's about 18 students less, but feel like that's okay. uh just just kind of varies every year on when they roll in and when they come, but 36 of those students will be in Get Kids Ready um across four schools. So, I was working on lists today. We are filling up for Get Kids Ready uh which is great. So, it's definitely a draw to get families in and we're looking for that full daycare opportunity. >> What about [clears throat] can ask a
question here as long as we're on that? So, what about our teachers from the YMCA? Where what what's happening there? >> So, the the staff from the YMCA are not our teachers. Um, so our Are you talking our 4K? >> Our 4K, right? >> Our 4K at the YMCA is a teacher who's hired by the Y. So, she's not our employee and she's choosing to not work next year. It's personal reasons, but >> true. >> And I'm assuming they're going to still have it. and is posted >> 4K >> that position at the Y. >> No. >> Oh, they're not. >> The YMCA cannot have 4K and Get Kids Ready. >> Oh. >> So, they have to they had to eliminate their contract for get for 4K with us in order to have Get Kids
Ready. You can't have both. So, they chose to do Get Kids Ready in partnership with us to be able to provide that full day opportunity for >> they they're hiring because they need to hire for uh than who they currently have because they will have uh staff at all four buildings. And their staff, I believe they're linked they're they're aligning their um before school program staff with their get kids ready staff so they can have them work longer days in hopes to recruit more people. And I know they also increased their wages this year um with their changeover. So are the kids that are doing this, they're going they're with us for the morning and then they go >> Okay. >> Correct. >> In the same building like >> Yeah. Y >> So they So
for example and you know some of the schools will have morning and afternoon get kids ready. So they could be either or morning or afternoon but for example a student could come in the morning at 7 for before school care stay for 4K with our staff at the district. Um, and then the YMCA staff would take them for lunch and rest time and then they'd roll right in to get kids ready and they'd be able to stay there until 3:30. Um, and then if they wanted to access the after school program, they could do that also uh and pay for that with our district. So, in theory, our four-year-olds could be with us from 7 to 5, right? >> Sure. >> Hopefully, they're not. You know, that's just a really long day for >> but
it gives people the option if they need before or after school. the the option of whatever whatever version of a schedule they need to create for them. Yes. >> Can they ride the bus? >> Yes. >> Can they get free and reduced lunch? >> Yes. >> What about special services? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Yep. And we're currently working with the Y. We can either provide those special ed services through get kids ready program like in that time frame or in our 4K classroom just depending on what works best for the the case managers. Does the fork does the get kids ready program cover the cost then for those special services? >> No, we'd be obligated to provide those regardless. >> We just have the opportunity and the option I guess scheduling purposes to provide
it >> at any point in time. It works for us. So, >> good question. >> Really good program. I really have to give Jen credit because she's the one that got out when I did all the leg work for it because this program, a lot of other districts are really terrified of it. What's going to happen is daycarees and stuff are going to take kids from the district. Jen's actually using this to leverage to get more kids into our district. So, this is this could work out to be a really good thing for us. Yeah, >> we talked about it a little bit at Great Lakes today, too, about how beneficial it will be for kids that need to get a little bit more impact in the school before they start kindergarten. >> Yep. >>
And that daycare option is huge. >> The time frame for 4K is not really ideal. We all recognize that. So, >> great opportunity. We are one of two districts across the state that are partnering with outside agencies to provide get kids ready um in this way. We were the first and another district took our lead and said this is a great idea. We want to do this too. But in talking with districts across the state where nobody else is doing this. So >> John trends that are superior learning experience >> be a new leading district. Yes. But the so the teacher that's hired is they're hired through the YMCA >> for get kids ready. Yes. And then we hire our 4K teachers through the district. >> Okay. So I don't know if we have any
control over the YMCA teacher, but do they need some sort of is there what's the requirement? They just a regular teaching license. >> They actually have to have a teaching license. >> That's what I was curious about. Yeah. >> That changed >> only for the YMCA one though, right? >> Sorry. Say that again. Only the YMCA teacher doesn't need to license. >> Our district teachers all have a licensed are all licensed teachers through DPI whether license. >> The get kids ready teachers. They're not required to have a teaching license. Um just an associates degree or bachelor's degree. Um they are required to provide a curriculum that's approved. So the YMCA has a curriculum that they've been using in Duth with their programming there. And so they're uh just using the same curriculum. And I have
been working with um the YMCA to organize and plan for joint trainings for next year so that our 4K teachers and get kids ready teachers have time together to plan for supports for students and we do share PD and things like that. Any other questions about either of those two before I jump in as a result? uh summer school and I kind of refer to it as summer programming because there's so many things happening this summer uh with our summer programming. So, Northern Lights will be our one school for our elementary students this year. Um so, we are underway with planning for that. Um, summer school for drama camp, elementary, and our secondary camps is going to be June 15th through July 16th. There will be no school the week of the 4th of July.
Um, and our secondary camps and drama camp will all be at the high school. So, no classes at the middle school this year and no classes at any other elementary building. Just Northern Lights and the high school are two our two sites. Our secondary camps, I'm calling them that because we opened them up to high school age students also. So, we do have a handful of um 9th through 12th graders who want to do um word and card games or um kids in the kitchen cooking and things like that. So, there's uh there is an opportunity for them to participate in those things as well. Um we have uh Spartan Athletic Development. They'll have their four sessions again. They run six weeks and they start June 8th and will go until the 23rd, 22nd, excuse
me. Um, we're done a day early uh this year because of the summit. So, we kind of worked around that to make sure our kids get out for that. Um, and at the high school, they also have credit recovery and geometry available for f for students to participate in. Um we are tentatively planning to offer women in manufacturing. Uh the enrollment is low right now. So just depending on what enrollment looks like for that particular session will depend on if that's going to be an offering. Um band camp's an option for kids to sign up for they participate in the Fourth of July parade. Um so we have a week of band camp happening. Um and then uh I think those were all the things I want to touch on the afternoon activities and then
I have one more high school opportunity to share with you. Um for elementary, we're also transporting students to afternoon opportunities and I've been working with um community partners to set up some options for that and what that looks like. So students can be bus to the high school for the Boys and Girls Club. They'll be at the high school during the the six weeks of summer school until the end of July and then they're moving back to the middle school um where they've been housed. And uh we'll bus them to the summer playground program. That's at all the community parks for the afternoon. Um hunter safety will be at the Superior Trap Club two of the four weeks during summer school. Um so we'll bust them out to the Superior Trap Club during those weeks.
They are pretty much full. One of the sessions is all the way full. I think we've got one a few spots in one of the sessions that's open up still, the July one maybe. Um UWS is offering a little jackets camp um for the four weeks of summer school in conjunction with our four weeks. And so we'll bus them there if they're going to participate in any of those camps. And then the YMCA is offering wrap care at Northern Light. So no busing for those students. They'll just walk down the hall to the rap care if they're staying for that. But so I'm working with principles and the lead teachers to make sure we've got clear lists of where everybody's going so that we can get them all accounted for. But um very excited to
be able to offer those options for families again for that full day opportunity as they we have a lot of working families who need that. >> Well, I also want to say I mean you've done such a good job of trying to get more attendance because if we have more FTE in the summer that rolls over to our annual budget for overall FTE so that it has an impact on our budget. So >> Sure. Yeah, one more kind of fun thing I want to share with you. Um, pretty recent. It kind of landed in my lap. Um, I was doing some research working with a student at the high school and kind of stumbled across this, reached out for more information and then I met with her. We sort of snowballed into plans for the
summer. Summer Trades Academy will be happening um at the high school this summer uh July 20th through the 24th. The students will come from 8:30 to 2:30 Monday through Friday. It's open to juniors and seniors only. Um, but they will go on a ton of field trips that week and visit and learn about all of the trades. So, uh, the company that I'm working with, WRTPE, uh, Tracy will plan everything. She leads it. We really don't have to do much of anything other than provide the space. uh we will have a teacher who will accompany her just because then we can count that for summer school funding purposes um and also increase the number of students that we can offer this to. So we our cap will be about 21 um just based on being
able to transport them and the program and what they can support. Um but she is she and I are working on getting that all set up. So soon as I have the flyer from her, we will start pushing that out. I've met with the high school this morning and talked about the idea of maybe pulling kids during advisory just to talk with them more about this opportunity and advertise it a little bit more once we get information. But we'll take that by year and see what we what we can do once we have the information in our hands. So >> sounds good. >> Yeah. Um I think that's all I have for summer school. [laughter] >> Any questions? >> Jen, I know it's not on the agenda, but can you just give us a little
brief uh tidbit about how the POW went? >> Yes, I was I actually brought a little note. I was gonna two little plugs about Indian education. Powell, we had about 350 people in attendance. So we were very happy with that. It was a great start. Um, obviously we would love to see that number grow and get larger, but it was a good place to start for our first year. So, I think everything went really well. We had I'm just counting tables, probably 12 different vendors who were there selling uh their their things. Um, anything from bead work to blankets and moccasins, leather bags, things like that. Um, and then we had three food vendors who were there. Um, our hope is next year we'd just be able to provide a feast once we solidify budgets,
but it was really hard to plan this year with limited budgets from ourselves in UWS and then also just never not knowing what to expect and what number to to budget off of. So, um, so our plan would be to offer a feast in future years. >> Yes. >> Um, but yeah, it was it was a great event. We were happy with that. Um, just one quick last reminder. Native graduation is next Friday. So, um, mark your calendars and let me know if you're coming or not. >> All right. Thank you very much. >> Always thorough. >> Motion to accept the teaching and learning committee report. >> Second. >> Motion second to accepts teaching and learning committee report. Is there any further discussion? Hearing none. All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I.

Motion carries. CISA 12 shared services contract. Administration recommends approval of the 2026 27 shared services contract with CISA 12 in the amount of $98,83124. This reflects a decrease from the 2020 2526 contract. district will continue to utilize CISA 12 for essential services. The reduced total is a result of strategic alignments to specific service levels based on current district needs. >> Motion to approve. >> Second. >> Motion is second. Is there any further discussion? Hearing none. All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I. >> Opposed. Motion carries. One new action item. Administration recommends approval of the 2026 27 preliminary budget. Motion to approve. >> Second. >> Motion in a second. David, any update you would like to share with us? >> Yeah, remember how I said their numbers in a change? >> All right.
>> You did. >> Which way? >> Good. >> To the good side. >> Uh so just today they announced or announced and I think others have announced uh they've come to a bipartisan agreement on uh what they're doing with the surplus. the the big things I talk about is the first one is the sped reimbursement, bumping it up to 50% for next year. Um, that's good, but what it is is just fulfilling the promise they made for next year because it's still some certain. So, what's going to happen is it's they're going to reimburse at 45%. Um, so we still lose out on the 5% we had this year because we're going to reimburse at 37% instead of 42 is my estimate. Um, but that is around $600,000. And if you guys remember as we're
in a $600,000 deficit preliminary budget, so this could get us to neutral. No promises, but it could get us to neutral. There's still a lot of numbers that can change on it. Um that's new money to the school district. Then the other side is they're pushing the reduction in taxes. So what they're doing is from what I hear is $300 million increase to the general aid budget or the equalization aid. Last year or well this year I guess uh was 5.5 billion. So 300 million is around 5%. My simple math is just all right that means I'm going to get 5% more in aid. That's looking at about $1.5 billion in additional aid. Our revenue staying flat. So in theory, our tax lo would actually go down by $1.5 million. So just preliminary numbers, I'm
looking at a tax limit that might be more in line with what we have in had in 2425 as opposed to 2526. And 2526 is where we had the big $2.5 million jump. So overall, this is a good thing. I'd really like to be able to pass a tax levy where we're not seeing increases at all and hopefully reduction tax levy for for the property owners around here. But um so yeah, so the only new money is that sped reimbursement and it is a step in the right direction. So I'm glad they did. It was surprising to see the announcement. >> They did say it's the highest increase in special ed reimbursement raises increases in the history of the state budget. So >> they like to use that historical word. >> I know. There's not
a legislative report, so I don't know if you want me to wait until the end or if you want me to share. >> It's relative. >> Okay. Um, so I did message um our Assembly Representative Angela Strode about it. Um, and you know, this is great news. It is. Um, but it's unfortunately like not done yet until the Senate votes for it. Um it is a much needed boost, she said. Um but um the total cost is $1.8 billion dollars. Um and it also um you know, we should just be asking them to fully fund our our public schools and it's also giving voters another $20 million. Um so just some things to consider. We're making progress. um we're going the right direction, but it it's not quite solidified yet. So, we can still reach
out to our senators and encourage them to support this. Um and also with the caveat of like that [clears throat] 20 million fair vouchers, we would love to see that going to our public schools. And I think David reached out to all of you. We do have Angela Stout coming um to the district. You're all invited to be a part of that conversation with her if you're interested. But knowing I know that you guys have other plans during the day, but you are invited. >> Oh, good. Okay, good. There any update on adding the breakdown on the tax statement? >> There is not. >> Isn't that just going to happen again next like start from scratch next year? >> Yeah. >> Is that what you reported last time? >> We haven't um we haven't been
Dr. Kintop and I have not spoken with person we're working with Chris in a month now. So I did see Dr. Kintop this morning at the YMCA and reminded her that we needed to get going on this >> and the WPN summer summit will be here in July and they they have the re that would might be a good time for us too to connect with them. >> All right. Any other further discussion on the new action item hearing? None. Second. >> Second to accept the budget insurance committee report. Is there any further discussion? Hearing none. All those in favor signify by saying I. >> I. >> Opposed. Motion carries.
