superintendent's report great um thank you good evening everyone we'll start with 6.1 on the superintendent's report a report from dot key project based learning high school and a student representative so you can go ahead and introduce yourself and share what you have okay hello my name is robin carnico and i am a junior from docky project-based learning high school i was here last april for our initial update on that night we shared out things that had gone on during the first semester at dot key and tonight i will be updating you on the second semester first i would like to update you on our growth and enrollment for next year two weeks ago mr gills and mr t went into numerous eighth grade classrooms at all three intermediate schools and shared a brief presentation on
daki as a full-time or dual enrollment option for high school while there they promoted another eighth grade discovery night that dochi hosted last week we had 21 students and their families attend to see and hear more about dochi it was a fun and successful event and since then we have received increased interest in students who want to attend at the last board meeting we explained that our enrollment goal is to have 50 to 60 students in each grade level we are happy to announce that we are now projecting 60 new 9th graders next year as well as 100 returning students and some other new 10th and 11th graders with all of that combined mr gales is projecting that we start the next year with around 170 students next i'll head back to the start of
the second semester and share a few things that have gone on since then we started the semester with 15 new students one of them being me that joined from halen central we were welcomed into the school family and we have done a great job adjusting to the project-based way of learning next since february daki has delivered multiple pitches for funding student-run businesses to the district's e-lab student groups created plan developed and pitched their ideas for small businesses for fidget toys stickers dungeons and dragons game pieces guitar picks and more phoenix graphics which is stocky's t-shirt business even pitched for an eight in one press for mugs hats and other items along with supplies for our new sublimation printer fancy word the 8 in 1 press was recently used to fill an order of personalized mugs
for all of the pershing elementary teachers for teacher appreciation week in march miss brunette's robotics class took on the challenge of building robots that needed to be designed built and programmed to complete tasks as if they were on the planet mars students along with the help of our amazing custodian doug used a piece of plywood to create a huge mock-up of the terrain found on mars after weeks of planning and multiple iterations of their robots the students went public with an event at docky outside experts and district representatives attended to witness the presentations and watched the attempts at completing the course and asked questions the students learned a lot and were very proud of what they accomplished at the end of march dockey had the honor of presenting at the deeper learning 2022 conference in
san diego mr gills took a team of three teachers and our pbl coach to share out on our all school community project with the milwaukee bucks mr gills miss hayes miss wardlow miss bitters and mr fromm presented twice at the conference about how other schools can make learning more authentic by reaching outside of the school and partnering with real world partners to solve real problems the presentations were packed it was a very proud moment for daki and the school district in april daki students along with representatives from other wawm secondary schools attended a training at the urban ecology center in milwaukee representatives from blue dot from san diego were there to help the groups on the importance of student voice in their education and to support them in planning a project one docu teacher mr
lynch reported that the students helped him plan a comic-con event that will be revealed at our june 2nd exhibition event it was a powerful day of collaborating in an especially empowering experience for all of the students involved docky recently welcomed some new roommates to the delight of our environmental science teacher miss burton our shipment of 10 000 new bees arrived last week students in her class as well as those that are part of the student-run b business helped take delivery of the bees and get them settled into their new hive there is probe ware in the hive that monitors the swarm as well as the honey production twice per year the honey is harvested from the hive a few weeks ago just over 23 pounds of honey was harvested the pure honey is jarred and
the honeycomb is used for a variety of products like soap lip balm bath bombs jewelry and more you can come to our end of the year exhibition night to check out and purchase these products doc he was asked to volunteer at last week's last week friday's senior prom hosted by the west allis west milwaukee recreation and community services department mr gills brought over eight young men to volunteer at the event the students dressed up in their best formal wear and served the food and beverages those who attended the event in preparation for the event the boys got to learn how to iron clothes and tie ties they even stayed after and had fun at the dance portion of the event daki was very happy to volunteer at the event and the boys received many compliments
and words of gratitude this last announcement is a big one ducky's end of the year all school exhibition event is june 2nd from 4 to 7 pm every student in the school is required to attend and show off a project or student-run business that they are proud of our initial event in january was a huge success and we are very excited to open our doors to the public for this last event the entire community is invited to come see and hear what docky students are learning about we will have our student-run businesses open like the phoenix cafe phoenix graphics the bike shop the b business and more just a few of the cool projects that will be shared are giant inflatable geometric shapes poetry books stained glass a student made bass guitar short films podcasts

to replace some of the bees in the original hype that you had um [Music] i'm not sure okay awesome it's very cool it's just in like the back parking lot of the school fenced stuff i have had the opportunity to see it and i think it's great so thank you yeah awesome thank you great job um we went into 6.2 the legislative update it's just very brief uh the wisconsin policy forum that used to renew report this week entitled how are school districts spending their federal relief funds so there's a link that's available to the public if they want to access that report from the wisconsin policy forum about esser funding and then go on to 6.3 board of education recognitions and there's quite a bit um here today from my superintendent from maybe we'd
like to congratulate steve eichman who recently completed the wasebo facilities manager certification program the program is designed to provide facility managers and those responsible for school facilities with current knowledge and best practices from shared journeys congratulations to ashley moreno for being awarded the first united methodist church scholarship a huge thank you to the entire short journey staff students and even our amazing volunteers for helping spend time cleaning up the blocks surrounding our school during our community cleanup day from the music department there's quite a bit here from music on saturday may 7 2022 students from area schools participated in a wisconsin school music association association sanctioned state solo and ensemble music festival hosted at cardinal stretch university during the festival students performed vocal and instrumental solos duets trios and small ensembles before an adjudicator wan
waw students from central nathan hale and frank lloyd wright represented our district at the festival and you can see all of the gold medal recipients silver medal recipients from our schools we're proud of all of them i'm not going to read all the names but they'll be in the official board minutes but i will read this part this is fascinating to be the exemplary performance recognition project expands recognition of outstanding student performers at the wsma so the wisconsin school music association state solo and ensemble festival state festival adjudicators identify exceptional performances at each of the state festival campuses through a two-step process nomination and final selection students who are selected for the award receive receive a certificate from wwsma in recognition of their outstanding performance at the state festival throughout the day adjudicators have an
opportunity to nominate students who whose performance was truly exceptional beyond what is typically expected for this age group at the end of the day each adjudicator selects the most exceptional performance to receive the exemplary performance award from among those nominated and we congratulate nathan hale symphonic strings and their director miss kathy kolb for once again receiving the exemplary award at state this year so that's phenomenal and then student composition project each year the wisconsin school music association sponsors a student composition project frank lloyd wright 8th grade orchestra student ethan pollock received first place for his arrangement in indigonium forge his orchestra teacher is mary pat michaels and he takes private viola lessons with amanda coke who also helps him with his music composition passion this is the second time ethan has won this award so
that's the recognition for this evening and it is it's pretty powerful for an eighth grader uh so then um in 6.4 first i'll start with so it's the updates and information items for me i'll start with our response to public comments on may 9th 2022 we heard from a number of members of the public regarding school consolidation plans but before i respond to those comments i'd like to respond to one comment on other topics so mr steve broadwell made comments regarding his opinion and how gender is determined i want to be clear that he was medically incorrect in his assertion i'll simply quote from the november 13 2018 press release from the american medical association announcing the approval of an updated policy affirming the medical spectrum of gender and so this is the quote um
sex and gender are more complex than previously assumed said ama board member william e colbert md it is essential to acknowledge that an individual's gender identity identity may not align with the sex assigned to them at birth a narrow limit on the definition of sex would have public health consequences for the transgender population and individuals born with differences in sexual differentiation also known as intersex traits the ama will work to preserve access to quality healthcare by educating state and federal policymakers to ensure they have a fundamental understanding of the scientific nature of a person's sex the west allis west milwaukee school district's policies are designed to promote inclusion of all students so that everyone can have a safe and equitable place to learn mr bradwell also commented commented that we are quote grooming students to
be social justice activists the term grooming these days is being thrown around and it's intended to be incendiary and we understand the intent however we are educating students to be activists in their own lives and in the effort to improve their communities being an activist to improve your community is a good thing and speaking at school board meetings with this intent is an example of being an activist so with regards to members of the public who spoke on the topic of school consolidations we heard from four speakers supporting wilson elementary school and one supporting madison elementary school all these speakers also represented others that were in the audience we very much appreciate the comments about school consolidations these are extraordinarily difficult decisions that will be in front of the board on june 6. the recommendations
that the administration will make will be based on more than two years of analysis feedback from the facility advisory community team feedback from the school consolidation team and an additional administrative analysis no decisions have been made at this point but we continue the process of feedback with the next of four opportunities for community input with a presentation and listening session at lane intermediate school at 6 pm tomorrow again that's at lane there will be a virtual question and answer session on wednesday may 25th at 11 a.m which is which is a reschedule of the q a session intended for today but we had some technical difficulties getting that one off the ground um the information and zoom link for the wednesday virtual q a is available on our website it's also on social media but
this is the virtual session will not include a presentation it's simply to answer any remaining questions members of the public may have and then just quick other updates current covent numbers as of last friday the district positive rate was 0.24 and the highest school was dotkey at 2.33 but that's remains stable now for two days in a row um but we're monitoring dot each day and i've uh communicated with greg gels that you know if if the positive rate at dot he exceeds three percent then they move to wearing masks indoors again for two weeks or until the percent positive drops to three percent or lower and then um we have upcoming policy review and updates so this week we begin the work of updating board policies so this is a twice yearly activity with
our representative from neola since we moved to the neola policy platform we recognize the important work of keeping policies updated and even though it is a significant amount of work it's the reason we moved to neola to begin with so prior to our work with neola we were using policies that dated back to the 90s and some even earlier so using the ola i think is even though it's work it's very helpful for us and there's more to come on that board committees will see some of that work start to kind of roll through and then we'll bring it back through the first reading and second reading like we did um a few months ago and that concludes the superintendent's report okay thank you very much now we'll move on to um public comments so
everyone who wants to address the board has three minutes to do so you must start by stating your name and address uh the board will not ask questions or interact with you as far as responding to comments you have unless there is a clarifying uh simple answer that can be given to a question or statement that has been made uh if anyone is watching via zoom who would like to provide comments of the board you can do that there's a link in the chat please click on that link and you can sign up for the online sign up sheet uh we do have a new timer here in front of me so that is going to be started and stopped by the zimmerman over here so please pay attention to that and i will start
with mr steve broadwell steve broadwell 12965 west ohio court and new berlin first thank you for the uh comment with the gobbledygook on gender uh i could cite many medical professionals i don't know what you're looking at many medical professionals that have an opinion that it's a psychosis and it's not it's just not right what you're saying i mean there are two genders okay on to my comments marty during the january 10th school board meeting you said you were going to do a review of a list of 45 book titles i sent you per your request deemed inappropriate for our kids by a conservative watchdog group here we are four and a half months later and out of darkness which i read from here at the meeting in december and which prompted your request is
still available to our kids along with others on that list one might think that you might start with that book in your investigation either you have not followed through with your promise or you deem appropriate a book that includes scenes of incest rape and pedophilia also available from that list is a book titled later gator a book i imagine you would define as coming of age i read that book and it's quite a pathetic sophomoric and sexually explicit piece of garbage yet available to our kids in middle schools like lane lots of f-bombs and here are just a few passages from that book i like to put on a show so not only you have to be very hung talented i.e long-lasting and multiple comer but you have to be okay a sexy 18 year
old in front of other guys there would never be too many three four or even five well for sure you can list it right up there with your other accomplishments straight a's honor council giving head it wasn't really fun for me but i think you really liked it my jaw got tired have you ever given logan a blow job oh doug and zoe must be going at it in the church basement by now do you think he's going to blow his wad again it's funny thinking of doug blowing his wad just to be clear we're talking full insertion here yes we made love and i'll never be a virgin again it was more complicated than i thought the complicated part was getting it in he kind of guided it in with his hands it did
hurt a little did you have the big o no but he did please explain to me how this contributes to making a kid a better more productive person do you ever read this crap before putting it in our libraries what parent wants their kids reading stuff like this my list is probably only scratching the surface this is just another empty promise like your promise of equity at least as it pertains to equitable treatment or lack thereof of bullies that only makes worse the violence we see in this district you have made a lot of parents extremely upset with the way you have handled a recent group of bullies at lane including your incredibly inappropriate criticism of the mom of that child that was bullied this is unbelievable we understand more every day why shorewood parents
and teachers wanted you out of their district seven years ago okay we'll move on to miss amy graff amygraf12940 west crawford drive in new berlin so i'm just here it's kind of impromptu just to say thank you i know i come to most meetings and i listen to a lot of people give public comments and afterwards i wish i would get up and say a little bit more so it's basically a thank you so first of all thank you for the teacher appreciation lunch that administration sent to all the schools we really appreciated that as well as the t-shirts that the pta council sent so that was you know wonderful um this year i know early retirement was offered to teachers so thank you for looking at those opportunities and providing that to those who
can benefit from early retirement the 4.7 cpi increase that was wonderful and i know that that's not always easy decisions when we talk about salary and money especially when the public voted no on the referendum but as a taxpayer of this district i only speak for myself i don't speak for others but i have been a taxpayer since i've been teaching that's been 31 years anything that we can do to retain teachers and also to um get other families to move in and want to be part of this district is the step in the right direction so thanks for your efforts and all of that that you're doing another thank you for the retention bonus that was you know such a great um thing to receive during teacher appreciation week for those of us who
are choosing to stay in the district is very well received and then one more on that's supporting project-based learning you know as a teacher in the district for many years i've always tried to use that with my own students and i know a lot of former students those are the things that they remember i was a hoover student i remember the projects that we did those are the things that stand out those are the memories that we are creating for these kids that they will think about as they become adults so thank you for supporting that and encouraging teachers to continue with that work and i guess that's all i have so it's been a long school year it's been rough thank all of you for everything that you do to support the teachers and
the families and the students in our district thank you thank you very much all right that's all i have signed up for pull up comments this evening as i usually do i'll leave 10 or 15 seconds here if someone is online would like to sign up to provide comments again the link is in the chat if you are watching via zoom all right seeing none i'm going to close public comments at this time and move on to item 8 which are the board reports uh we'll start with 8.1 the review of the board calendar so tonight is may 23rd 6 pm we have a regular board of education meeting then on june 6th we have a special board meeting at 6 p.m this is where we have scheduled to take action on school consolidations this
is a meeting that was at specifically so that we would be able to be prepared to make decisions as soon as all of the listening sessions are complete then on june 13th at 6 pm we have a regular board of education meeting immediately finally we have a workshop the proposed 2223 budget and preliminary tax levy number two uh the june 20th workshop listed currently is going to be rescheduled for july so we'll we will have that monday off and then on monday june 27th at 6 p.m we have a regular board of education meeting and then we have action that is required for the proposed 2223 budget and preliminary tax levy number two uh so moving on to item 8.2 uh do we have any board member reports of community events i i don't have
a community i'd like to go back to our work our calendar oh okay i just wanted to express my disappointment in having that meeting on june 6th okay i've spent two years as a member of that committee and here when it comes to something that big to vote on i'm not able to do it because on the short notice i try to plan all my vacations and stuff for that first monday of the month because we don't meet so i did that i've got a big trip planned down to nashville with family and grandkids that it's just impossible to get out of but i am going to see if i can somehow be in a place where i can go online okay right but i'm just i wanted to excite i'm really disappointed all right
noted good uh last week uh mitchell had their grades three four five concert and it's always a good time and very sweet it's nice to see um kids using marimbas and all various sorts of instruments so it was a very nice concert put on okay thank you very much anyone else any community events miss you i don't have community events but it was brought to my attention that i did leave out a few groups when i thanked the parent and student groups that honor teacher appreciation week so to any student or parent group out there if you helped honor our teachers that week i want to say thank you especially to our i guess we don't have a pta at central so our central booster club did did do stuff for the teachers over there
so um i just wanna make sure that everyone gets recognized because it's a great way that we honor our teachers and a lot of people do participate do uh um try to do that so okay yeah thank you very much all that thanks is there anyone any other events um brendan do you have anything that you wanted to online if you do uh i have to flag me down um if i'll just i just say i was able to attend the the prelude the all-district uh player prelude concert that was held last week my both my son and daughter were able to participate in it and it was really cool to see not only the the current private students that we that we have but also a lot of alumni came and played uh songs
as well uh for uh that event so it was a great event put on once again with our music staff and mary pat for for organizing it so just wanted to commend that all right so let's move on to our consent agenda we have 9.1 the approval of minutes from our regular board of education meeting on may 9th in our board workshop from may 16th we have item 9.2 which is our employment summary item 9.3 which is our supplementary contracts and i'm 9.4 our financial statement summary is anything anything separated out 9.2 please all right 9.2 anything else needs to be separated if not i look for a motion on 9.1 9.3 and 9.4 move to a proof second moved and seconded any last minute discussion right all those in favor aye aye [Music] okay
thumbs up quarterback is there as well leslie okay oh there she is all right uh so then uh so those pass and then we'll take a look for motion on 9.2 move to approve 9.2 moved in second and last minute discussion yeah seeing 37 teachers resigning seven and special ed and 30 teachers i'm concerned and i i should know this but i don't know who's on our uh on the committee for uh future attention do we get answers on why they are resigning so on we do offer exit interviews and so there's one that is an email kind of a survey and then there's another offer of a face-to-face um some of this is just there's just generalized churn and education right now i think much more than we've seen um and opportunities and it
is competitive for a number of these positions uh but deidre when she and i actually communicated about this today um kind of anticipating somebody should be asking this question right um and so there's a little more background that maybe is helpful um yeah we have quite a few people who are actually just leaving education right now which is sad for the field it's happening across the nation but there's quite a few on that list who are actually just planning to leave the field all together and then we had a high number especially in special ed in a couple of places that are moving out of the area and so it just became no one's going to wausau and other places where you just wouldn't continue employment here as well what concerns me about it is
just if we know why they're leaving great yep because you can't talk them into something that they don't want to do but if they're just leaving and we don't know why we can't fix the why dana asks her a resignation form every single time that somebody resigns and so on the form you can list a reason most people choose to list a reason um historically the reason has been compensation yeah yeah but yeah we do ask that jeff and then marianne will have a report that kind of summarizes what's the reason in general right that people are leaving thank you just to add on to that do you know where we're at i know i kind of talked to you about this last week but you know where we're at in terms of did we
see the same type of trend i mean like who people were resigning is it about the same where we were like in the last few years are we seeing an uptick i'm just curious as to where the trend is in our particular district absolutely i did ask was that to pull the same employment summary from this meeting a year ago and this is about devil yeah it's that markup yep yeah included in there also as you look through it and i know you guys have seen it are a couple of the fiscal non-renews which we knew were coming um and there were at least one retirement on there when i read through it so again part of that is the work we're trying to do to keep fiscally sound as well as to honor those
early retirements and retirement opportunities for staff as well any other questions or comments about the summit right so we have a motion a second all those in favor to our action items for this evening starting with 10.1 extended usa travel 8th grade flw students to new york city october 2023. okay so that's us and our team is mostly online we have quite a few teachers that are online um brandon did you see the request to be able to share screen yeah did you want to say something oh i'm sorry okay okay so um this is another opportunity our team at frank lloyd wright um our world travelers are going to be really good at this pretty soon um but this is a jam-packed opportunity to see new york city and with that i will pass
it over to our team that is on the zoom um good evening i'd like to start my name is sarah cassell i'm one of the teachers over at frank lloyd wright i'm the lead on um this trip we're proposing we are also all of us are in charge of the trip that we're doing this coming october to boston um and we recently decided because we used to do it every other year and take seventh and eighth graders and we had so much interest in this last trip to boston that we actually had to like cut it off at a certain point because there were so many kids so we decided to change it and start doing the trip every year and specifically for eighth graders so this next trip would be in october 2023 for
new york we've been changing up the trip as well trying different places and it would be for our current sixth graders um so the trip uh the cost of the trip is two thousand one hundred fifty four dollars that's for three days and two nights um and again the company that we go through is world strides and we understand that the price sometimes can be a little expensive but one of the things world strikes offers is um scholarships for our students um and parents simply they can call and as long as the dual income of the family is under 80 000 they can receive money towards the trip so that's one of the reasons why we also go with this company um and kyle is going to be talking about the trip and the itinerary
and what we're doing and miss kempke is also going to be talking to you okay so back for another great trip from flw to another amazing city of new york so we'll leave on tuesday october 10th and we'll hit the ground running in new york we'll start off with central park head to the metropolitan museum of art from there we'll head to chinatown little italy rockefeller center or the empire state building depending on how it all plays out and that's all in the first day at the end of that day we'll check into our hotel and wake up the next morning bright and early and head to the statue of liberty on wednesday from there ellis island off to lunch somewhere around the financial district in wall street where we'll see the new york stock
exchange the federal reserve bank of new york as well as chase manhattan bank one of the highlights for me of this day is going to be uh the national 911 memorial off to dinner and then times square and then the highlight for a lot of the kids i think is going to be the broadway show on wednesday because i mean like that's to me seems like the big highlight like the big to-do of the trip like that's one thing that we wanted to make sure we had and so group they're day three sorry thursday uh this will be another kind of like big show kind of a day where the kids will get an up close look at a live today show broadcast we'll head to the rockefeller center view st patrick's cathedral uh do
lunch and then we'll go to radio city music hall home of the world famous rockettes take a stroll down fifth avenue have dinner and come back to west atlas all in a matter of three days so this is a huge experience first so my name is jen kemka um okay um i teach math and science in the steam community at flw um i just wanted to talk a little bit i know that this trip is a little bit more costly than our last one um we already have a lot of ideas as far as fundraising um i've been in touch with a couple of people as far as individually fundraising for each one of the kids this would be something that if the kids were interested in wanting to go we wanted to make sure
to give them again like we did this year for boston which would be in october of 22. we wanted to give them the entire year of next year to be able to do some fundraising and raise some money to be able to help them go um some ideas we had for them to be able to do this are spaghetti dinners or helping um get in contact with the lions club to be able to do cornrows during state fair bake sales i know i have at least some people who do color runs and you know have it putting on some events like that as well or bowling nights raffle baskets we have lots of ideas that we want to be able to do talk to some of the restaurants that are around west dallas um see
if they'd be interested in doing a dining night for us so that some of the proceeds would be able to benefit us as well um we want to as many of these eighth graders well they will be eighth graders then to be able to go if they want to so we have many ideas as well as the scholarship program that miss castell had talked about as well so we're hoping that some of these will help supplement individual students when they're able to when they're able to go i think that's all i have miss kemka did you want to mention the travel club that we do with them yes ma'am i totally forgot about that so this year uh miss comey and i started a travel club which we were really excited about we went to
washington dc uh last summer with a group and decided that there was a lot of things that we wanted to be able to talk about um get the kids together more than just some of these meetings and more than just the parent meetings for being able to travel abroad we've talked about customs and going to other places we've talked about traveling we've talked about the airport it's incredible how many students haven't actually traveled so talking about all these different things that they are interested in we answer some of the same questions several times but we answer as many questions as we can and the travel club is also heading up what we can for the boston field trip as well in hopefully making t-shirts what we want to do and make water bottles things like
that and this travel club though it is not necessarily the students who are just traveling abroad with us that's kind of who ended up showing up so we do a lot more of just talking about travel talking about what we're going to be doing in boston they got to take virtual tours so far of some of the places that we're going to be seeing and they were really interested in being able to um get to know each other a little bit more instead of some people who were very nervous about being the only one in their friend group um not having somebody to room with was a big thing so getting them together after school you know uh about we only do it like twice a month at this point it was really nice to
be able to help some of those students out and alleviate some of that anxiety miss comey did i miss anything for that i think that was pretty much what we had you summed it up okay so then travel club at this point too could help with some of those um with some of those fundraising events so that we would be able to work together work with the students get come up with ideas and they're pretty much the ones who come up with all these ideas as well so it's it's very student-read so student-run and if i could just add one thing like coming back from our last dc trip i have a lot of kids in my current class now that were in my group when we went to dc and almost daily they're asking
hey can we see the pictures from dc can we see the pictures in dc so i'll throw them up on the board and we'll just kind of click through them and it's amazing just like the relationships that the kids build with us when we're on these trips and that they build with each other so i think it's just like an unbelievable experience for all of our students what's your limit for students going and number of chaperones um we're not sure at this point i'm trying to think um this boston trip we have is that 114 kids going i believe and seven chaperones i think so part of it is just because of subbing and finding you know and obviously that's been an issue this year but that's what we were allowed to take this year
so and that was with seventh and eighth graders though going so i think with just eighth graders going i think that it will definitely be doable for any kid who wants to go and be able to go that was one of the reasons we wanted to do this to alleviate some of that stress and having a smaller number of students with a smaller number of chaperones having to leave east coaster who grew up going to new york city on the weekends i love this trip so i hope you have a wonderful trip if and when we pass this we hope so too other questions brendan miss lee do you have any questions all those in favor aye that passes thank you very much hope you have a wonderful trip thank you very much thank you
all right let's move on to item 10.2 our 4k to 12 art adoption uh miss reimer at val um so i'm going to pass this one over to mr hengel who part of his responsibilities is to oversee our art team um and our full art team that's with us tonight um i'm gonna if you're gonna be talking yeah just you might want to sit here yeah and we can move that other mic over to the table too and part of our team has expanded you just approved a new art teacher from central who is here with us this evening um who you met at our workshop as well so i will pass it over to mr mangle and eat all right first uh uh we'll start out with uh just some brief introductions as we
have a large team all art teachers so i'll let you guys swing around and just introduce yourself and where um what buildings you're in i'm jessica trichoglish i am the art teacher at frank lloyd wright well what's up i'm michelle wellslater i'm at nathan hill and snitker jefferson elementary i am johanna shred i'm at franklin and wilson elementary schools i'm kelsey lemke howard i'm an intern at hail right now but i will be at central next year it's like a pageant all right so i'm just gonna go over um some super high level things uh as you guys got to speak to these two young ladies last week about some of our specifics so i think the reason why um everybody is here uh is because we have some needs to fill in our art
department in terms of adopting a core resource as you can see in our first bullet point there is we have not had a core resource adoption um in almo in over 20 years uh there's been several attempts at some homegrown peach pieces and approaches um over those last 20 years but as many of you know and from working in education sometimes those are hard especially when you're talking about 4k through 12th grade um and so these guys really came um and working with justin michelle too of this being an an opportunity for us to kind of get on to one pace where you are experiencing the same thing if you're a fourth grader at jefferson as your fourth grader franklin is you're a fourth grader at hoover um so you have some continuity there um
so this is kind of one of those opportunities for us um and so through the art of education university which these guys have brought some samples that'll let them talk through as we went through in our pilot uh two of their main pieces are art being a universal language and um having those opportunities so this is a project-based resource where there are thousands of sample projects um approaching from an equitable lens where each of our populations are represented which i saw a couple i think you have a couple of those samples um and then also the idea that one of art of ed's kind of their mantra is the idea that you can show your learning through different modalities so having things in drawing or animation or video or photography collage and more and that
art expresses culture um so this uh in this resource it's for as many of you know that have been on the board before if you're new we typically adopt in a seven year cycle and it is 100 customizable so they give you um you know here's a project which these ladies will highlight um and you can click things on and off whether or not you want to include that in your project and one of the bigger pieces is the support so that's the flex curriculum the support is also pro learning this is their professional development module so there are thousands of videos that teach you um techniques in art so i'm sure somebody will highlight how you find those things now and how that can be frustrating as a staff member and then we also
have a dedicated onboarding specialist through the art of editor midwestern they're like based out of iowa um our sales representative is like do you want me to drive up for the board meeting um so he's i'm like no i think we're good tron but he's like we commute we've been communicating we probably met five or six times over the course of the pilot you know exactly like yes yes one of the big things too is that there's not really any other products out there like this that are customizable and offer the level of support that we were able to find especially at this cost some of the other ones that we looked at initially were double in cost easily um and then so as we had nine people who responded in our pilot um in
our board policy we have a resource evaluation which they scored zero ones or twos and almost every question uh received at least a two at eighty percent so seven out of nine people the only one that didn't was the professional development because um i worked with sean to get that as an add-on as a support um within our our base cost so i will let all these guys um take over because i've already kind of explained some of those pieces so i actually didn't even bring this piece but um so my sixth graders we went through a whole series one of the projects in there had to do with kind of like a sel and multimedia integration so we um talked about visual rhythm and musical rhythm and then they actually got to listen to
whatever kind of music they chose to and then i also had some instrumental music on in the background of like popular music if they didn't have headphones um and they painted how they thought their music would look if it was visual um so what colors would you use for whatever type of music you were doing what would the lines look like what would the designs look like um then we also did a bunch of practicing using charcoal and drawing from observation and then they had to use those techniques to use the charcoal and draw on top of there so we had some relaxing fun classes where they just got to paint kind of however they were feeling with whatever music and then we got into the technical like actual um drawing from observation and put
that on top of there so these are some of the pieces that in progress yeah okay so um at jefferson elementary our fire teacher wanted to do an olympic unit and so we did a collaborative thing where um the kids were already placed in olympic teams and they chose their country and then in our class we found this project on artabet where they were designing their country's flag making it mosaic so it was a collaborative project they also had to do a little bit of research they had to find out why the color of why the flag had the colors that they did and there was a meeting behind it and they also presented it to class so it was a great way for them to show their learning to work together and then they
also earned with gold points for complete tasks and for showing teamwork and collaboration and then that kind of pulled their viad class so they had an overall winner total with that so that was the cross curricular thing that we did with bayan and music also did something so the kids were able to like experience this project um three different classes over several different weeks and um you can see there's some examples there presenting and working together and just showing off their work and see the pride so i did this mini weaving project with my first graders and a heavy special ed second grade class normally weaving is very complicated and i've done it with third grade and it's usually very much of a struggle but art event had this lesson here which i thought was
really cool because it's pretty simple um you glue your popsicle sticks together you use rubber bands and once the kids got the concept of twisting the rubber band to put the things through they were able to make like four or five of these in a class and they just knocked it out of the park so seeing first graders asking for more to make more was really impressive for me and i actually sent a whole bunch with the beads home already so these are what i have left over but adaptability is just amazing we decided to um adapt it a little bit for women's history month so they all pick someone important to them this is one of the science teachers at hale in the snowy boyd i think it turned out really nice uh we
had just a super diverse group some celebrities some siblings this was someone's sister we got an oprah i think they just turned out so fun and then something really fun about this lesson that made it kind of interactive was we are actually able to scan these and print them on printer paper really small so they're like little stamps that the kids can pass around and they each kind of got one of each stamp and uh really enjoy that as well so i think it was a super fun project and they were able to be really successful we used a grid so students who thought they weren't capable of drawing intricate portraits were able to do that and feel really successful about themselves yeah some of the samples that we brought here would be the kids
that came in the class saying i i can't do this and they did an awesome job the grid was a little difficult for him but after that smooth sailing yeah what i really liked is the versatility and all of the opportunities that they have not only just for projects but for different resources we used um a resource similar to this to do a watercolor project that kelsey can hold up kind of a past present future that central had done in the past and it just turned out really awesome that we wanted to do something similar um so not only project ideas but resource ideas i think it's phenomenal um so this is just one example of just kind of a watercolor technique piece that we did prior to the watercolor here's some other samples i
know it's probably hard to see on the screen but some were very conceptual some were very literal like they just took it the direction that they wanted to and really personalized it um this was um just a kind of a poster project that we did we really wanted to go a different route and it ended up we had to do it a little differently which turned out even better because kids left comments um about what they stood for um some different resources that the art of ed has is just these artists biographies which we tied into um women's history month uh kelsey made this template that kids could do it was like a one or two day activity um where they got to pick a female artist go through some of the bios that we
had from the art of ed um and we just kind of created a fun little banner it spans much longer than this but i just got a little snippet of it where they gave some information and then they could um either you know use the picture provided or they could draw it how they wanted it so um i just really like the versatility for teachers i love the critiques that they have not only for student to student but they critique us um those are an option as well um we get i get got an email a few must have been like a month ago about art shows and how to kind of like curate different way um different ways to hang some of your artwork and stuff so um i'm trying one this week wednesday
we're having a food truck and fine arts night at flw and i took these got giant pieces of um cardboard and i'm like according them and i just covered them in black paper but like if i hadn't just seen this resource in the art event i would have been like oh my gosh how am i gonna hang all this artwork around school because flw does not have the greatest walls for hanging like it's just brick so now i have this great space and it's turning out really awesome so just they literally think of everything that i could have ever like needed something i just can search in this whole platform and it will give me many ideas oh yeah um when i was doing the survey on on the art event something that's really um
interesting to me is that it has all kinds of templates like curriculum planning templates scope and sequence templates so you can plan an entire school year you can you can plan it by grade and you can piece it all together and make sure that you're meeting all of the national standards for art education consistently from pre-k through 12th grade and the wisconsin standard which will really help just i know even when i came in the district 15 years ago at 14 i don't know how fun i was like what do we have for me and never like what do you mean here you go just teach whatever you want like what okay but like i feel like we should have something for anybody who comes in here's at least like five things you should do
with your fifth graders throughout the year whatever else fill it in but you know this will help us a lot questions yeah anybody have any questions i'm thrilled that this curriculum exists as a resource um as a teacher and several of us are have i've been former teachers creating your own resources is exhausting when you just want to teach and really expand and having seen this at the last um uh workshop thank you um i should do one of the language um it's fantastic i really hope teachers what if we adopt this other teachers here and come to you and say let's start working together i think that this is that cross curricular project work we want to see that you know it makes better for better schools and better students so i'm glad you
have it yeah and there's several other districts in our area mps uses this racine uses this kenosha madison yeah so there's a lot of large districts across the state of wisconsin you know also use this resource too so as whenever we adopt a new resource we always get some really decent pd in the package and um [Music] how confident are you that in the future new art teachers to our district would be able to use this without any pd like what do we have a long range plan for that yeah so i think that's the that's the flex pro i'm gonna go back here so you know i made the joke of like you'd be looking on youtube to be picking up new artist techniques uh but this is available to us for the next
seven years so the um all these guys that piloted you can load your own classes it's agnostic across any platform so it doesn't matter if you have an ipad or chromebook or anything like that um so you can also add kids if they just show up one day um but then this will be available to us for seven years all asynchronous 24 7 365. we've also in our quote they've given us uh i think it was two free um conference registrations for their yearly conference um which would be something that you know is investing in people uh as well so but i think this was the big the big piece to only we didn't really talk about this throughout the um throughout the adoption piece because i was working with sean on the back end
of like how to support that learning so this is our main piece and like jess was saying if we create some of our anchor projects across certain grade levels and through the mentoring that we already have that exist they'll be able to show these and through our gvc's and our i can statements to be able to like work with our new staff on supporting them we also get a person who is like specifically um tied to our account so like they're literally available so like 24 7. we can call text um email and they will get back to us within like a day or two even sean he would be kind of like loosely linked with us but he came and got feedback from us and the next day emailed me and was like i've
been thinking about this thing that you guys um were talking about and it was just about how um there wasn't really any specific um lessons for like adaptive classes and he was like we are actually looking into that and because you asked about it we're gonna make sure that we put some of those in there so there are people that are available to us at all times to get an apd that people would need for like usage of the program itself and then they would come in in the fall and teach us how to use all of it very easily and i mean he he went through it in like a half hour time frame and we could all kind of like easily figured it out from there so if he they gave us like
the main points then we can definitely go from there and i think as like the leads maybe if we got a little bit more training on it we could always help anybody out who comes in any other questions mr burns miss lee any questions all right look for a motion move second seconded any last minute discussion all those in favor aye aye aye all right i'm so happy go forth and have fun with that are you gonna pass these out thank you in 20 years it was i got it it was failed seafood there's actual food and then the kids approval of season number one contract for 2223 mrs raymond hello again um so this is an annual item for us we do contract some services through sisa1 um one of them is being just
a part of their professional network um there's some audiology services which are specialized services that we purchased through cs01 we recently in recent years joined their math leadership network um as it's focused around some equity pieces in math and some project-based learning pieces in math and so we've had four reps attend that session and then there are also three tuition paying seats for students with special needs whose needs we cannot meet in our local public school or at bridges to learning um noah had asked a question previously whether that's an increase in seats for this year and it is not what's turning point elementary um so that's at the season one program and see someone rents from us the building at parkway yep so that's the elementary version and project success is one of their
high school programs okay any other questions mr burns miss lee look for yeah thumbs up all right that ends our agenda for this evening and look for a motion to adjourn move to adjourn second we've been seconded all those in favor aye aye aye opposed your adjourned thank you very much everyone
