I'll open with policy 1510, regular board meeting and board meetings and public expression. The board encourages public participation at board meetings during a specific portion of the agenda entitled privilege of the floor. the public comment section is not the time or place to register complaints about individuals or items that have not first been addressed through proper channels with those closest to the issue such as the teacher building principal the superintendent or other appropriate party individuals making statements during privilege of the floor are expected to be courteous and respectful modeling for our students how one can participate and have their voice heard in situations where there is agreement or disagreement with others views If members of the public have gone through the proper channels and still wish to discuss a matter with the board, they can

submit their comments in writing to the board clerk. At its discretion, the board may invite visitors into meetings to participate in the board's discussion of matters on the agenda. The public comment section is an opportunity for residents and residents only to address the Board of Education. Public comment should take place only in the portion of the agenda as designated. is usually at the beginning of each meeting. Persons wishing to address the board must indicate their desire to speak in advance on the sign-in sheet. Because of the board typically has many business items on its agenda, especially tonight. speakers must confine their comments to three minutes the board will not address specific questions or comments but may ask you for your name and contact information in the event followed as necessary the board will not permit

in public session discussion involving any individual personnel or students persons wishing to discuss matters involving individual personnel or students should present their comments and or concerns to the superintendent who will share them with the board at the next executive session Well, I just wanted to come up and say that I know from personal experience how hard it is to do a public-facing role like all of the board members sitting here have done for one year, two years, three years, more. And there has been such a level of vitriol and hatred and lies and attacks made on... Most of you if not all of you and many of us in the audience personally and it's such a difficult thing to go through it is such a hard road to walk to Delineate between your obligation to

your family and your obligation to your community And when those two things put up against each other, it's extremely difficult to even know which direction to go in. So I wanted to say thank you. I also know that I've had conversations pretty much with each person on this board over the years about things related to the school. And the conversation is always met with an open mind. a gracious approach, and even when we don't always agree on things, hopefully we never disagree on anything, but even when we don't agree on things, you've always been so willing to find resolution in any way that you can. And I want to thank those that are stepping away and thank them for everything that they've done for our community. And for those that are incoming, I hope that

they continue the good work that everybody on this board has done. So thank you very much for all that you've done. Good evening. On May 17th, our May 17th school board election had the largest voter turnout in over 22 years. It revealed that the majority of our community does not want socialism, Marxism, critical race theory, indoctrination forced onto our children and grandchildren disguised as DEI inequity. Immediately following this historic election, Superintendent Niedermeyer continued to ignore the concerns of so many Duanesburg residents and declared, quote, the school district has not been, nor will it ever be, opposed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, end quote. A hypocrite is someone who preaches one thing but does the direct opposite. Our superintendent has repeatedly preached all around inclusion, but has refused to include ideas if they do not directly

align with his agenda. Recently, our superintendent blocked parents from attending this year's elementary school field day. He declared that the decision to exclude parents was in the best interest of the students. How do students benefit when their parents are restricted from volunteering for field trips and for field day? I believe that the more parents are involved in a child's education, the better off the child will be. As the CEO of a school district, the superintendent should be a positive example of practicing what he preaches. If he preaches inclusivity, but at the same time he excludes parents from volunteering for school activities, he's a hypocrite. On a very important side note, I 100% support having an armed sheriff, an SRO, attend our school board meetings to protect our superintendent and school board members. But as a

parent, I feel it is much more critical that our Duanesburg students in both of our schools are protected full-time while on school property. How can our school officials leave our precious children unguarded while at the same time provide after-hour armed protection for themselves? I ask that our school leaders hire an additional SRO to stand guard and protect school, both schools full time next year, both the elementary and the junior senior high. Let's remove the politics and hypocrisy that is plaguing our school district and harming our children. Please reach out to me if you would like proof of the school's sexualization indoctrination of our youth. and regarding the teaching of socialism, Marxism in our schools under the guise of SEL, DEI, and equity, I am willing to have an open discussion with any of you here

and with anyone in the audience and on the film. Let's stand together to protect the innocence of our children. Thank you very much. The agenda into admin reports and updates. Jeff? Oh, no, Jeff does not. So we'll move on now to your superintendent's update. I just want to talk about two things. I know we have a packed agenda. The first thing that I want to talk about tonight is district safety. I know that I got some emails about this after the recent mass shootings. First, the mass shooting in Buffalo. I did want to address some of the things that I sent out to the parent in the email. So really, when we're talking about district safety, we're talking about that as a multi-phase approach. The phase that we're in charge of right now is being

prepared. And then, of course, there's response and recovery and mitigation phases. But the only thing that we can do right now is just be as prepared as possible for something like that happening. And so I just wanted to kind of take you through some of the things that we have in place already. One of the things is we do have a lot of people whose minds are set on this task all year long. So not just when it's in the news, but really throughout the whole course of the year. So we have a district. and building safety committees and also building safety plans and a district safety plan. Now the district safety plan is a public facing document. So that's the thing that I sent out recently to get comments on. The building plans are

actually private documents that have annexes for all the different eventualities that might occur in a school, including active shooting incidents, but also things like weather related incidents or cyber events. So there's lots of things that we plan for and kind of game out as the year goes on. We also have a district crisis team. That district crisis team is activated whenever there's an event in the community that involves a student or a community member that we think is going to have an impact on students. And we've used that a couple of times this year. Sometimes we activate the district crisis team when a crisis has occurred in another district. to talk about what our response is going to be for that district as well. We also have a district wellness team. So wellness is an

important part of our preparedness. We have social workers at each building, which is not typical for schools our size, but it's definitely a benefit to us. And we're lucky to have two social workers. We also have an in-house mental health clinic. that's staffed by a Northern River social worker, and also a very rare thing, especially in a district our size. And we have a full-time school resource officer who's either at the high school building or the junior high school building. And we have two six through 12 counselors. So we have a lot of people that are thinking about district safety all the time, not to mention our partners that we bring in to discuss school safety issues all the time, like first responders. um other people from the sheriff's department that we we bring in

to advise us on how to make sure that our school is as safe as possible so There's a lot of other things that we do to make sure our schools are secure one of the most important things that we do is making sure that we have a single point of entry during the school day and so some people did mention the fact that well Students entered during through those double doors at the beginning of the day at the elementary school But then in the office doors the rest of the day and that's true So we do have those doors staffed when people are coming through them in the morning But there are some times, especially at the very beginning of the day, when that entry point might change. But we have a single point of

entry in our schools. And generally, those single point of entries have, both of those single point of entries have two doors that you have to go through. And you have to be kind of buzzed in both ways in order to get into the school building. We also have something called the Raptor system. So the Raptor system is a system in which visitors have to give. There are photo IDs to gain entrance to the building. It's run through Raptor, which is a computer system which interfaces to find out if anyone is on any registries that should disallow them from being in school systems. We have video surveillance throughout the district. All of our buildings have video cameras in them. We also do participate in annual violence prevention training, so that's by law, and also safety training.

And we have 12 emergency drills every year. Four of those by law are to be some kind of lockdown evacuation type drills, and then the rest of them are designated as fire drills. Now, just to be kind of clear about that, so during the last two years, we've done drills differently. One of the reasons we did that was because we were trying to keep kids spread out, and it's difficult to do a lockdown drill at speed in the way that you should do it while still... keeping kids six feet apart. There's just no possible way to do that. So a lot of what we've done is practicing through scripting, through actually just talking through what we would do, and kind of walking through drills as opposed to running drills at full speed. And so now

that we're in a better place, we'll be returning back to our usual method of doing drills, which will likely include an evacuation drill. But even when we don't have those full drills that involve the student body, We still do things like practice evacuation drills through tabletop exercises with all the people that would be involved to see if there's holes in our plan to make sure that everybody feels comfortable with what we're doing. And this year we did do that and actually conferred with some of our offsite places where we might evacuate to just to make sure that those were also secure locations when we go to them. Another thing that's very important is having a progressive disciplinary approach. You might not think of that as being something that is a preventative measure, but having things

like a progressive disciplinary approach, having things like a PBIS program and social emotional learning, so that was referenced before, but all those things help make our school buildings safer because they help teach students how to deal with different... social, emotional things that might occur in their lives. So those are all preventative measures. We also have a lot of other activities that help keep kids involved in school. So there is a positive correlation between people who are involved in school and people who don't participate in these kinds of negative events. And so we have a lot of our student body participating in athletics and other things that they're tied to. So our kids do have good, strong relationships with adults in the building. We also spend time on mental health and wellness education, especially in health

classes. That's another thing that's mandated by law, but a thing that we've done always. And also, we also go into classrooms in the elementary school with social workers to do different kinds of... social and emotional training. So something that was referenced earlier too was the difference in the field day this year. So one of the reasons for the difference in field, it wasn't a, by the way, it wasn't a decision that I made solely, actually not a decision that I was involved in. It was a building level decision. And the reason why the building made that decision was because this has been a very challenging year for students socially and emotionally. We've certainly had more than our share of behavioral incidents during the course of the year. And it was felt by the team that

having such a large scale event this year at this time wouldn't be in the best interest of kids because it would involve an awful lot of people in a very kind of not contained environment. where we have students who have struggled in even short assemblies or short events during the course of the day. So instead that team elected to do team building exercises instead of the typical exercises. And those team building exercises are things on like sportsmanship and dealing with conflict. And all of those activities will be followed up by discussions. that are led by teachers where they talk through what students learned during those activities. So I understand that it's a change in tradition, but it's also a much needed educational activity for our kids so that they can do events like that in

the future where they're a little less structured. So I apologize to people who really enjoy that event, but we're just not at a place right now with our elementary students where we can do something like that. And also, I will also say, and I've said this to other folks who've asked too, that events like that do pose risks, especially events that occur in the front of the school, in the back of the school, all around the school, where you have community members integrating with students all day long, sometimes taking students without notifying people that they're taking students. And so right now, we decided that that was an event that we were gonna do. It doesn't mean that that's the way that we're going to do it always, but it's how we're going to do it

this year. And also, I can't stress enough how important PBIS is in the elementary school and a growing thing in the secondary as well to make sure that students know how to deal with emotional issues that come up so that we can reinforce positive things that students are doing behaviorally. All those things are very important to keep our district safe. We're also exploring, I do think it's important to explore the size of our SRO program. So we have to look at two different things there. First thing we have to look at is the community's desire for an SRO program. And so that's an important thing. I think the SRO program is great. It is something that I think more often than not keeps kids out of trouble than getting kids into trouble. and it also

represents a really important liaison between the school and homes. But sometimes it's not also feasible for districts to expand the SRO program, not just because of money, although the SRO program is an expensive endeavor because it's not just the officer, it's the car and the officer's benefits. It's a pricey program. However, as people have said, there's really no price that's too great to make sure that folks are safe. The other thing that is important to look at in the SRO program is making sure that they can actually provide an officer because they experience the same kinds of shortages that everybody's experiencing everywhere. So we did meet, I think it was last week, we met and I inquired about... the feasibility of that and we'll bring to the board the pricing information and whether or not

they have officers that could step into this role should we choose to expand that down the road I'll also say that another thing that came up when I asked for public comments about the safety plan was the idea of, you know, people have seen walking around the building, they've seen, well, I saw a door propped by the playground and there was no adult standing by the door. And some people noticed some of those other things. So making sure that not just the entrances are hardened, but also that the access controls are pretty closely monitored. so that things like propping doors open or letting people in who are behind you which we do just because of manners but those are things that we really can't do and certainly leaving a doorway unattended isn't something that we

can do so we're looking into different ways that we can more closely control access to buildings whether that's through alarm systems on more doors perhaps silent alarm systems there's systems that will You know, send a text message to a principal if there's a door that's left a jar for longer than so many seconds there's some that create an audio alarm when they're propped open there's lots of different things that we can do for that. And also, making sure that we're more tightly controlling the hours of access for people who are outside of our Community who occasionally access our building like. for if people are in the community and they've noticed that maybe the time that their swipe card works on the doors changes to just after hours. That's totally intentional. There might also be people

who only need access during a given sports season. And so those are things that we're really going to try to tightly control. There's also some different methodologies for how to respond to active attacker situations. So not just active shooters, but there's all kinds of different attacks that have occurred with different kinds of weapons and sometimes automobiles. And so there's a civilian response training that you can take to become a trainer for that particular methodology that is put out for free. I know that our SRO is going through this training right now, and so am I. And I think our principals will this summer as well. And then also any staff members who want to participate in this trainer training can do that. But we'll be able to then train staff on a lot of these

different methods, which are slightly more aggressive than methods in the past. So it's not just a used to be called run, hide, fight. And really that hide is kind of out of the scenario at this point. And it's a much more. Kind of proactive method of dealing with attackers in spaces So that's something that we'll be doing in the fall Well, we're also looking into offering a stop the bleed training for interested staff members. It's sort of emergency You know emergency tourniquets and things like that and it's Really unfortunate that we live in an age where we have to think about doing some things like that, but some staff members have asked for that training, and so we'll offer it for those who are interested. We're also going to expand the scripting and practicing of

various situations, so scripting things like what do we do if this were to happen? How would we handle that? Even today, we were talking about... one particular room in the school and how would we handle it if there were even a fire in this room? How would we deal with that? Because the room had an extra protection over the window. And so how do we deal with that? How do we open that? Can we make sure that the staff is trained so that they know how to access that? So there's lots of things that you can talk through. Certainly there's nothing you can do to talk through every eventuality, but there's things that you can do to at least feel prepared. and practicing situations as often as possible is something that we're going to do.

And then also another good suggestion from the community was to communicate to parents at regular intervals about these things, because I think that we forget that there are lots of things that schools have done really since Columbine to make sure that schools are as safe as possible. Things like, you know, bulletproof film on glass in entryways that we've done for so long now. that maybe some folks have forgotten that we do them. And so those are things that I'll be trying to do too. So I think that probably we do, generally we do the practicing for lockdowns and things like that quarterly. And I think that's a good time to communicate out to the public why we do these things and what other measures are in place to make sure kids are as safe as

possible. And so those are the things that we're working on right now that we're exploring. Does anybody have any questions? Anybody on the board have any questions about any of these things before I move on? That's a good question, and I don't know the answer to that. Fortunately, we don't have any substitutes either, so it's not usually a situation that we have to deal with. But I can find that out. I'm almost sure that the answer is yes, that there's a way to do that. And Jeff, maybe you know how many doors are locked from the inside? Don't know. So a lot of things have been converted over time. Yep. Yes, you are correct. There's a reason why those building level plans are private and it's because people don't need to know what our plans

are. Well, we're actually working on it right now. So we have somebody coming in tomorrow. We already have one quote for that system, and then we have somebody coming in tomorrow to present a proposal that's very similar. But, yeah, so I hope to get that done sooner. Yeah, I hope so. I hope so. Installation schedules are also crazy, and I would imagine that there's lots of schools that are doing this very same thing right now. But we'll move as quickly as we can to make sure that these things happen. But until that point, there's very simple things that we can do, like, for instance, purchasing signage to go near doors that say not to prop the door and not to hold the door open for other people. That's a very easy fix that we can

do right away. And things like, you know, there's some areas where we might not have that bullet-resistant film. We can get that film and have that installed pretty quickly. But, yeah, we'll do everything as quickly as we can. The one thing that we're not in control of is the speed of the SRO program really requires the Sheriff's Department to get back to me to say that they have a person and this is how much it is. It's something that's big enough that we probably want to do some surveying of the community and also having you folks have the approval of expanding that program. Any other questions about this? Okay, so I want to move on to much happier, more exciting news, and that is about the YMCA. This is the beautiful YMCA building, which has

been closed for almost two years. And before that, it was the Waynesburg Area Community Center. And it also has a lot of grounds associated with it. But just to kind of bring everybody up to speed. So I did announce this in a forum last week on the capital project and sent out something via parent square about it. But for those of you who haven't heard, we do have an opportunity that was brought to us by. a municipality that shall be named later, which said that they, we, Jeff and I really have been working on this for about two years now. So since this was, since we found out that the Y was closed, we started working with people at the Y at the time, talk about how we could partner more closely with them first

to figure out how to get them to reopen and to be more fiscally solvent. Maybe there were some things that we could do. to assist the Y in its operations because we know what a valuable thing it is for the community and how hard it is for the community to be without this facility. So we started talking about that and then it got to the point where it looked like the YMCA was no longer going to open up. And so then our conversation changed to, well, would you be interested in selling this building and what if we acquired it? And then we went kind of down that path for a long time. And then finally. We're at a point where we were near the end of that road, and then we were contacted by this

municipality that said, well, what if we were able to purchase that for you and then donate it to the school? It's very difficult to say no to free. But it's important to keep in mind, though, that even though the facility might be donated, I think Mr. Rivenberg would want you all to know that it still has ongoing costs that we have to consider. but it's an exciting possibility. So I wanted to talk to you a little bit about what we'd like to do with it. So I do think that the sale is imminent. They were reaching terms the last time that I spoke, and we hope that this is done pretty soon. And then after that, there will be some time to repair some minor things that have happened in the building since its closure.

not really major things there's some roof related things that need to be addressed but the building is still in great shape water's still in the pool still still a really good looking building So there's a lot of goals for this project. It really is a jewel of a facility. There's a lot of stuff that we can do with it. The first thing that made it attractive was the fact that we would like to expand our early learning capabilities in the community. So we have right now one UPK class. We have people on a waiting list, though, for another UPK class should it open up. I would really like to do that. I'd also really like to explore the possibility of opening up three, three PK, EPK, three-year-old programs down the road for an additional layer

of education for kids in the community. I know that there's a real shortage of childcare availability in the community. So having an option for three-year-olds as well as four-year-olds, I think would be huge. That's very important to us. It's also important because we know that kids who have gone through the UPK program do extraordinarily well in kindergarten and beyond. And so that's actually something that I have on my slate to present about at a next year board meeting, but to talk to you about just what happens with these UPK students now that we've had them in the pipeline for a couple of years. Obviously, this facility has great athletic spaces, including a competition pool and a beautiful gym. There is also, and this is really the reason why it's attractive to us, is that it

offers a lot of opportunity for the community. And so we wouldn't seek to open, to do anything with this building if the community couldn't also benefit from it. So that's definitely part of our plans. So we're not just looking to take over a facility to have a nice basketball court and then shut the doors to the community. We really think it's important that the community have a place to go, especially seniors in our community who haven't had a place for a while to invite them back in. and to make sure that we're serving all the residents of the community not just those who have children in the school district because everybody pays taxes as i am reminded often So everybody should be served by the community, by the school district. There's also lots of opportunities

for volunteer and employment opportunities for students, which we're doing right now. We're employing lots of students this summer. We're employing students right now as we speak. And so those are important things for kids in our town. And also it gives us a lot of opportunities to partner with the community and lots of local agencies. So I'm really excited about what we can do with the Special Olympics, with Office of Aging, with even organizations like Catholic Charities that run a lot of the senior programming in the area. But there's lots of opportunities, even Schenectady County Community College to offer ongoing learning opportunities for adults in the community. So just to kind of bring you through in case you haven't seen the inside of it in a while, I do want to point out where we'd like

to put the early learning center. So this classroom, the NPR is in the front of the building right now. This is an area that would pretty instantly make a really good classroom. And actually, if we are able to expand over time to the child watch room next door and maybe steal a little bit of the lobby too. That would make an area where we could put two UPK classrooms in the front of the building. And so that shows a picture of the child watch room right now. And also the... This this front room this it's called the MPR the multi-purpose room, but it would make a great classroom as well And then if we stole a little bit from that lobby area, which is pretty large So we'd like to do that. We'd like to

expand early learning opportunities We'd also like to do wraparound childcare at this facility instead of in our elementary school So it's it's tough to do the childcare in the afternoons because there's lots of competition over space um and so we'd like them not to have to do that but to have their own space and we'd also like to make this a center for people who are learning about early child care so there's some programs in our area that are in need of internship possibilities and so inviting those programs out to participate in learning from our teachers how to teach these young children so that we can start to build a pipeline of people who can work in that field in this area i think is also very much needed There's also obviously a very beautiful

gym. So this is the gym before it changed ownership, but it's a really great picture. And it pretty much looks the same exact way. And so it offers us some additional practice space to reduce practice hours. So those of you who have kids know that sometimes the practices can go really, really late. And so this would give us one more place to throw in the rotation of that. We also have lots of opportunities for community usage and possibly what I'd like to not be is I'd like to not be a gym operator. And so what we'd really be looking to do is to lease the community usage portion to another organization that would offset some of our costs, but also would run things for the community. And so some of the things that we'll be

looking for are like. is the district able to get some income, some revenue from that lease so that we can offset our operations? And the other thing that we're looking at is, frankly, is the membership affordable enough for everybody in the community to belong to this facility? So that's a really important thing, too. Obviously, it has a beautiful pool. And so this was our swim team's home before the shutdown. And so it would be again. We would also really like to start a learn to swim program in PE classes. And there's also other nearby districts that have also expressed interest in doing that. So hopefully lots of our students in this region can learn how to swim in this pool. It's something that's really a shame that students in bigger or... suburban districts have this

advantage that sometimes schools in rural districts would never have because of the expense of actually building a pool. It's not something you get a great deal of aid for. So really only schools that don't rely on that aid as heavily as we do would have the opportunity to build it. There's no way that we would have the opportunity to build something like this. Having a community swim program. I have a meeting with the EELS program that used to operate out of that gym. And I hope to involve them again. I think there's also some lifeguard employment opportunities in that pool as well. There's also a nice alternative PE studio, which would give another space for people to do some community activities. It might allow for potential classroom growth down the road and might allow for

different kinds of PE classes too. There's lots of different kinds of PE classes that you could run that maybe look a little bit more like the opportunities that you have as a grown-up than just playing sports-based games in a regular gymnasium. There's also a fitness center, which would be a great thing for an additional space for conditioning. We have a fitness center here in our gym, but it would be nice to have an additional space. It would also be nice for a lessee to be able to use that for the community. It also has a commercial kitchen. So that would be a great area for a CDOS instructional space. So students who are learning occupational studies or learning about careers. be a really great place to do that. It'd be a great place to use

as a hub for community service. It really was an underused part of that. It's always been an underused part of that facility. It would be nice to really use that. Some of the equipment in there still looks brand new. And it would be another place where we could reach out to outside partners, possibly to do some adult education classes using this kitchen so that people can learn how to cook. I just think that the possibilities of this facility are sort of endless, and it's a really exciting possibility. The other two places that you might not think about are the office space, which may serve as office space, but it also may serve as some after-school programming space, like the idea of putting a lab in there and maybe doing some tutoring in there after school.

We tried to get something like that started this year, but maybe a different facility might make that a little bit more attractive. And then it also has really beautiful grounds, lots of land, and a possibility of maybe developing a cross-country course. there in the future and then maybe doing some intramurals there and doing especially after school and summer programming like running summer camps out of there is a distinct possibility as well so Lots and lots of things to do though. So the first stage that we're on right now is really in the purchase stage. So once the facility is purchased, it'll go through a renovation phase that won't take very long. And then it will be donated to the board. And so the board's only action in this would be to accept a donation. and

it might require maybe a dollar, but it's most likely gonna be a donation. And so it'll be the board's decision to accept that or not. And then after that, after it's donated to the school, we're actually already working on this next stage, which is submitting this project for approval to the Department of Education. As you could probably imagine there's lots and lots of paperwork associated with that and so we're starting to work on that our architects are also helping out with that We hope to also very soon after the board if they decide to accept it We hope to very soon after search for a partner via some sort of RFP process search for somebody Who might operate the community usage? And then we really hope, this is sort of optimistic, but the goal is

to be able to use the pool and the gym in the fall and to select some kind of partner for the community use by the fall. It's pretty optimistic. Fingers crossed we do have another pool that we can still use at mohanneson if we can't meet this deadline, but it's kind of my goal and then my secondary goal is To possibly have that room in the front classroom ready by by January of next year we started our current upk class midway through a year and so it's not it's something that we've done before So it would be great to say, I would really love to say we're going to open up a UPK class and put it in this building in the fall. That's what I really would like to do. However, I'm being a

little bit. more realistic to say that there's lots and lots of hoops that we have to jump through before that's a possibility, but we'll work as quickly as we can to make sure that the building's ready and that we have all the I's dotted and T's crossed and everything like that so that we can hopefully open at some point during the year another UPK section. So I've already had lots of offers from our current UPK teacher who would gladly be the person to pilot that space. So that is what's going on now with the YMCA. So does the board have any questions about that? Yes. Yep. No, so we were able to ask that that stuff remain where it is. And so I think that maybe a couple of pieces have been moved to other

Y sites, but the playground's still there. We've asked about the pool timing equipment and bleachers. We've asked about the equipment that's in the gym or in the fitness center. And so hopefully all that stuff stays put too. Any other questions? Yeah. As far as building modification goes, the initial plan sounds like it's mostly maybe I'm oversimplifying, shifting around kind of where the walls are and how the interior is configured, but you don't anticipate any exterior additions at this time? Not at this time. I would really rather do minimal modifications to start and just kind of get operating. and then work in any modification that we have to do down the road into future capital projects. So in order to convert it into two classrooms, I think we estimated that out. It's not very costly to

do that. But to just start with one classroom, there'd almost be no renovation at all. I mean, there might have to be another doorway put in to be able to kind of section that off from the rest of the facility so both can operate simultaneously. But I think that it can start with pretty minimal renovation. probably have to update some of the safety issues. A lot of the safety. We do have a list that is ever-growing of things that need to be done in order to make it school-ready, and one of the things is making sure that it has some of those safety things that we talked about before, making sure that the windows are on and went over yesterday to already measure the windows to see about the glazing. We have to put in

smaller toilets in certain areas. We have to... So he's already got the toilet on order, so don't worry. And so if something goes wrong and this doesn't end up happening, we'll be putting a miniature toilet on Craigslist. But security cameras, things like that, swipe entrances for doors. Yeah, so a lot of those things have to happen before we're putting kids in the building, at least kids in the building for classes. Things like the pool, maybe that can be done before a lot of that renovation happens or while that renovation is happening. Yeah. Yep. Do we have anybody who knows how to work a pool? Keep a pool working. Yeah. So those are good questions. I'm going to, I'm trying to say something without saying something. But yeah, there are plans to address some of those

things. We probably will have to employ at least one more maintenance person whose job it is to kind of run that facility to care for the grounds and things like that. In terms of plowing, there is kind of a tentative plan for that, but we'll see where that goes. But those are all things that are on our list of pools. Also, there are companies that currently... to operate that pool and so we'll look to see how much those folks are getting right now too. But we do have a pretty good idea of, from having done this for a long time, from having done a lot of research, we have a pretty good sense of the utility costs and the costs of maintenance of all of these things. And we'll try as much as we can

to mitigate those with, you know, renting out space, leasing to a gym operator. Some of those things are going to be things where we have to shift resources in order to do. But it's a pretty good problem to have. Yep. Yeah. Yeah. Sounds like it. Yes, it feels good. Or else I wouldn't share it. But it really is time to start talking about stuff. So people know that it's not just going to sit around. a lot of dedication to something as the words of my parting on this i look forward to seeing what the district and the board says thank you very much it's a pleasure Thank you, Shane. Any comments or questions? All those in favor, say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Any abstentions? Next on the agenda is new business. Standing committees. We'll move

This is recommended by the treasurer and the assistant superintendent of management services. Do I have a motion? I'll motion. Thank you, Shane. Second. Thank you, Melissa. Any comments or questions? This is for the elementary school? Yeah, so we're moving money over to cover the cost of the paving of the parking lot. So the parking lot is not part of the capital project, but we're going to be able to do it because we have some remaining fund balance. So now we'll have the brand new bus loop and also a newly paved elementary parking lot. It'll look like a million bucks, but it will look like more than a million bucks, hopefully, by the time this is

over. Yes. by default because it's so difficult to get Windows right now. What will the parking lot be when it's done? Is it going to include that new section? Parking lot? Or the loop? The parking lot. It'll look exactly like it looks now except for the fact that it'll be paved in the middle. Okay. Are you going to keep that section that you added on for the second loop? Yeah. So that's part of it. The parent drop-off, the addition. But that won't be parent drop-off. Right. And that'll be parking space. Okay. Yes. We did talk about that, and I think that getting rid of that requires a lot of extra hoops to jump through environmentally to make sure that we dig that out and pave it over. Oh, yeah. But also, we don't really need

additional parking space right there, especially if the new bus loop is going to be used for all that extra parking space for events. It's not really necessary to have additional. And we'll be gaining lots of parking spaces back. in that there's only one road in and one road out of the parking lot. The goal is to make sure that there's not long parent lines in the morning. Somebody mentioned the other day, so I'll be interested to, when we're sitting there in our line to drop kids off, if everything goes smoothly, we won't have much of a parent line in the morning. We're also working on... Staff in the elementary school a little bit early so that when people within reason drop their kids off at a certain time, although no matter what time we'll set,

there will always be people who get there earlier than that. But we'll staff the cafeteria so that kids can come in, drop off, go to the cafeteria where it's staffed by an aide similar to what they do in the high school and then parents kind of pull away and get on with their day so they don't have to wait as long. I know that must start off everybody's day. It's such a miserable way to have to... I do sympathize with everybody. All those in favor say aye. Aye. Yeah, so there's a portion of this that is paid for by the school district and then a portion of it that is billed to parents to cover the remaining costs.

The Northern Rivers has the money that the school district pays to cover the cost of the clinician. I'll also say that this is a service that we purchased through BOCES and so it's aidable which also makes it a really good deal for our district and it's helped a lot of kids there are some frustrating elements including insurances that they don't take but we've been able to kind of work with them through a lot of those issues that we're having any opposed group contract with city school district of albany recommendation that the board of education approved the health and welfare services contract between the city school district of albany and waynesburg central school district is recommended by the assistant superintendent of management services do you have a motion that are attending private schools within the albany

And one thing that's really important, I think, for planning purposes is to get this information out to families as soon as possible so they know that this is a possibility. Any abstentions? Tony, you're opposed and you're abstaining. Pick one. You've got to pick one. Thank you. We're moving on to the information portion of the agenda. The first item on the information is acknowledgement of outgoing board members. Is there something anybody wants to say? No. Today is the final regular board

meeting for Diane Grant and Deb Greer. The school board would like to recognize their years-long commitment to the Duanesburg community. Unfortunately, Diane is unable to attend tonight. But Diane has served for three years. I added up the regular meetings, executive meetings, committee meetings, special meetings, training, and retreats during her tenure, and they total approximately 115 meetings over three years. So it's quite a commitment to the community to be on the school board. Deb has been on the board for six years, twice as long. And she has also served as vice president and is the current school board president. So I figure Deb must have attended 230 meetings or so during her time on the board. All the hundreds of meetings that Deb and Diane have participated in, plus the countless hours it takes to prepare,

is unpaid. volunteer work on behalf of the children and residents of the school district. And you're worth every penny. You have both served the community well. On a personal level, I am the better for getting to know each of you, for having the benefit of your wisdom and seeing your compassion for our students. I just have to scroll. Being a successful school board member requires a genuine commitment to high quality public education for all children. I'd like to list some of the essential attributes of an effective school board member that I found while Googling on the internet. Be trustworthy. Do your homework. Gather facts to support your position. Be prepared to participate responsibly. Encourage your colleagues to speak their opinions and listen to them carefully and respectfully. Use your expertise to inform the wisdom of

others. Be humble. Remember that board members only have authority when acting as a board. Accept that the group decision is legitimate, even if it's not your personal choice. Remember that your job is to serve and trust for the entire community. not a single constituency. You can be from a constituency, but you must not let yourself represent it. You are responsible not only for yourself, but also for the group's behavior and productivity. And finally, serve all children. No child is more important than another. Deb, Diane, and the other board members share these attributes. and this explains why it has been and continues to be a joy to serve alongside you on school board. Deb, on behalf of the Duanesburg Central School District Board of Education, it is my pleasure to present you with this plaque, which

commemorates the six years you have devoted to your community and its children. And Diane, who isn't here, but Diane, on behalf of the Duanesburg Central School District Board of Education. It is my pleasure to present you sometime soon, hopefully, with this plaque which commemorates the three years you have devoted to your community and its children. And I think my mic's on. So I was first elected six years ago and then another, I guess, three years ago. And I went and I ran for election with no other agenda than to support the kids in this community. and help provide them with an enabling and supportive experience so that each student can reach their fullest potential. You all may not know me. I have five children. They range in age from 22 to 11. During my six-year

tenure, two of them have graduated from Duanesburg and three remain. One is a student at Langan, so that's why you saw me abstain from that tonight. He has severe disability. At no point... Since my children entering Duaneburg, have I felt that something was taken from one child of mine to give to another child? Every child has been equally and with equity supported through the entire duration. I would not advocate for anything otherwise. It's so important to keep an open mind and be willing to learn. I'm not an educator or an administrator by trade. I'm a corporate professional who... does organizational development work and all those kind of fun things. I don't come to this table thinking I know better than the superintendent knows to run the district or thinking I understand how to teach better

or thinking I can bring more to the table than any. I bring my perspective, I brought my experiences, and I brought my passion for the children of Duanesburg. I encourage all of you in the years that remain for you on the board to continue to keep the open mind. to continue to trust that the people that we've hired to do the job understand, to ask hard questions, and by all means, to hold people accountable. But we're not the experts individually. I didn't go to school to be a superintendent, and I think now more than ever I'm happy about that. But I did seek an education, and I sought out a family, and I sought out children, and I am thrilled that my children attend Waynesburg Central School for those three that still remain in this

district. I thank each and every one of the members of this community for their support over the six years. It hasn't always been easy. But I promise you, though I don't always agree with everyone, I am listening. So saying otherwise is untrue. I know how to listen actively, but I form my own opinion based on my experience and what I believe to be accurate. So thank you again. It's been a pleasure working with all of you. I'm going to miss you. I'll be on that side next time. But I will definitely be here to support you. Thank you all very much. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you all very much. Appreciate it. The next item for information is the May 17, 2022 budget and Board of Election results. So that's just

informational. They're available. We also have the 2022-2023 Board of Meeting calendar that was presented. Were there any questions? Just some changes from the last time you saw this that we're going to try to go down to one meeting a month. So that means the reduction of about four meetings. Now you do that. Although the preparation time is twice as long. We also received a letter of correspondence from Mrs. Lupiti, a community member appreciative of the board. And we wanted to have a quick discussion or information, actually an information update on the Education and Public Relations Committee. Jim, would you like to talk about that? Yeah, sure. These are two committees that aren't required. I think that the committee that is required by law is the Audit Committee. And I think that you're required to have

a committee that visits facilities. So we accomplished that with the B&G committee. We already have an audit committee. I think it's necessary going forward to continue on with the policy committee, even though we have an updated policy handbook, having a schedule of constant review, so we never find ourselves in a situation again where we have to revise an entire manual all at one time. Would be good. and but there's two committees that the public relations committee we haven't met as a committee since i've been here i don't think and i would suggest suspending that committee just because we do now have a public relations service and we communicate with the board pretty regularly on the communications that the school is doing so i would suggest suspending that committee and then The other committee that I

would suggest suspending is the Education Committee. Not that it's not valuable to talk about education, it's just that almost everything that is talked about in the Education Committee, which also meets kind of seldomly, the important things are also brought to the board as a whole, and I think it's appropriate for the board to kind of weigh in on all those issues as a whole. So I would suggest suspending that committee and doing that as a committee as a whole. So that means nothing other than you won't see it on the board agenda under the committee. I need a motion to enter into executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel issues and real estate acquisition. I'll note that we're not returning to regular session to conduct any further regular business. So the board will not

be back in this venue. May I have a motion, please? Thank you, Teresa. Second? Second. Francis? All those in favor say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Any abstentions? Are we relocating?
