and if you watch, there's no interaction via this new screen, so it's definitely easy. We'll still be able to watch the movie, they just won't be able to watch it as it's happening. So with that, I'm going to introduce you to Ace, and we'll go over to my left. I trust the president. I trust the president. I trust the superintendent. I'm going to ask you to tell me. With that all that's started, anyone who wants to speak or represent, please. and also to look at the new call plate to scan the sponsor framework from the state and the region's diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and how that applies to this bill. And we'll take the general move forward. Please, you know, in the middle of the budget, please do. I will be contacting all the
people who are volunteering on the committee. I will be sending a date for all the people that are listening. I have a call. I have a... You guys need more votes. You have too much? Yeah, I have too many votes. Okay. So one of the things that I also want to do tonight is to review for the public and the board the goals and the accomplishment towards the goals of 2020-21 school year, my school year of the Board of Education. And so the first goal that the board had last year was to support the success of the new three-year district. And I just would like to let the public know and the board know that on the October 18th Board of Education meeting, there will be a full presentation during the Supervisory Board in each
of the priority areas, real world learning, social emotional learning, safety and security, and STEM. And that will be a detailed presentation as to how the work of the board and the budget is supported here to create a strategic plan. So that will happen in our next board meeting. Then another goal of the board led here was to support the continued integration of technology and hand-student learning. So the board's work towards meeting that goal was in many of the budgetary additions for the 2021 school year that the board put in for the budget to support it. And so, for example, some of those included the purchase of one-to-one Chromebook tablets for all kindergarten students and for the first grade students, the purchasing of live streaming web cameras for classrooms to ensure continuity and instruction for the
remote and quarantine students, the purchase of Google Enterprise Upgrade for the district to provide advanced features with Google Maps such as Google Meet and Google Classroom, and as you know, we launched an entire Google Classroom last year. and found the tools and subscriptions for enhanced teaching and learning. And there were a number of them from , from , from education.com, ABC, and these are the different subscriptions that the budget in 2021 has supported for us to be able to integrate technology in the classroom. Also, a class set of Apple Pencils were included in our budget for Willis Road Art Classes to ensure both art teachers and school access to digital art creation. There was a purchase of additional black panels and stands to ensure all new instructional spaces were equipped with black panels, including the
Northside Gymnasium and Cafeteria. So those were used as instructional spaces last year. They're available now for those spaces and other spaces to improve. throughout the weekly teachers chromebooks were replaced so that teachers had the latest devices for seamless instruction now and then also there was a second technology teaching assistant that the budget supported that went to the weekly school to provide additional assistance with teachers in areas of technology expanded some of the examples of enhancing that the budget supported last year was creating a curriculum community at Kittahoe where teachers uploaded their summer curriculum projects. So now they're all available in one space so all the staff members can have... from easily technology professional development opportunities were offered throughout the year and these focus both on individual person hybrid teaching and learning as well there was
an enhanced focus on the process of learning versus the private learning and there were deeper project-based personalized learning experiences that appeared across the district and there was a a real rise in generation of some students using video software such as we video create original products, some of which you would have seen on the website, you would have seen featured. Teachers across the district continue to leverage all the digital tools they integrated with students when they were remote from March to June, their first year in 2020. And we can see when we do analysis of it that the use of the digital subscriptions now indicate why we do produce the tools that people are using in the classroom and students, including CareDev, performative assessment, FUNSI that students use to create content. as well as the test
prep for SAT and ACT preparation. And so those are some of the ways in which the board reports their goals for integrating technology. Now, another board goal was to support the expansion of anti-fake racism initiatives. So last year, one of the ways that we supported was to continue to expand the response of classroom practices in Northside and Willis Road classrooms. And this framework is specifically designed to integrate social and emotional learning and academics with a focus on creating a safe, predictable, joyful, and inclusive environment where all students have a sense of belonging and significance. Also last year began implementation of restorative practices at E.E. and Willis. Administrators trained over the summer. Restorative practices emphasize the importance of growing a positive, welcoming, and inclusive community with a focus on the importance of understanding how actions impact
the community and student support to enable them to learn to take responsibility for actions when harm is done. This is working towards developing emotional intelligence along with academic skills. Also, this goal was approached and reached by expanding the diversity of the texts both in English classes and secondary schools, and there was also a continuation of the expansion of culturally diverse texts in classroom libraries in elementary schools. There was a step developed in focus on classroom and school climate. Our students attended regional workshops, many of them for students on diversity, including the Long Island Leaders of Tomorrow conference from Erase Racism and also the AAPI Virtual Roundtable. The district incorporated Asian and Pacific Islander contributions in history into the school framework through a variety of experiences last year. We partnered with Erase Racism on several workshops
that included diversity hiring and school leader workshops. There was a focus on diversity timing and we were able to successfully make additions to our staff for this current school year, 2020, to support this initiative of an increase in our school district to become more diverse in terms of its staff. East Williston led the school district in a joint massive. led several school districts throughout the county in a joint Nassau County School District project in creating a curriculum unit offered for implementation countywide. This unit explores the history of Long Island housing segregation, the civil rights movement in North Hempstead, and the lasting impact of each. The district began last year the review of the New York State Culturally Responsive Sustaining Education Framework and the region's policy statement on diversity, equity, and inclusion in preparation for the
work of the Cultural Initiatives Committee of staff, parents, and students that's being formed this school year. This committee will consider recommendations in regard to our own school district initiatives surrounding this framework, which is designed to build upon a foundation of diversity, equity, and inclusion. access, opportunity, innovation, confidence, trust, respect, care, and relationships. And then the final goal that the board had was continued maintenance and support of facility repairs and enhancements. What occurred through the budget and that the budget supported and the work that was done to meet this board goal was last year our security cameras were updated, the fields project was completed, the weekly auditorium stage four was done, there were HPA CVPers throughout the district, and there was supplemental heating that was added to the north side in some of the ways that
it experienced difficulties. There was also upgraded security software. Also, the board's goals were reached last year through some of the planning that was happening for this current year. And some of those future projects that were planned last year that are beginning to take place now were to look at and submit and submit it to the state for the bathrooms, for outside with the new fields, for new interior classroom doors, replacements in all three buildings. And then additionally, looking at the underground storage of Wheatley, Willis Road, a boiler replacement that's being planned is looked at as the district continues under the board's direction and the capital facility's recommendation to maintain and look at our projects from year to year. And then also the HVAC and the ventilation. this year, which will be using some of the
money that we got from the government to look to see how we can ventilate spaces that are not usable now as testing spaces. And also, plans for a pooling and a cafeteria and a grill and a herding investigation last year was done to look at the best possible replacement. So I look forward, we all look forward to sharing all the ones, the supporting the strategic plan in depth about how the district has worked to meet that important goal. So many things that have taken place, particularly that directly impact our children and really get to see it live through our children. Even in a year of COVID, we were still able to experience and see so much go to the place last year. So we appreciate all the efforts. We appreciate the summary update, which the
board does continue to believe you have to need it to receive. We know it's a long, extensive list. It takes some time for the superintendent to work it back to the board, but we do feel it's important. that it gets reported back in its entirety so thank you so the board's plan for the 21-22 goals are to adopt to work on and adopt by the october board meeting and i'll recall if we have an october work session or not it's possible we may work on it a little bit at the work session but it is our plan to adopt them by the october business so more probable than that There's going to be, for the second item on the board report, there's going to be a walk-on resolution. It's going to be a walk-on resolution
of the 3.1 loan, which I believe is going to be for the board to attend to support a letter, a letter to support federal legislation to restore the state and local SALT tax deduction. So we'll comment a little bit more on that when we get to that item, but I believe that they're going to support a letter to our local congressman to ask for the support of that accordingly. So that's all I have on the school board report. I'm going to move into the information items. We have a second meeting on policy number 2370, public participation at board meetings. any comments as we turn now on the second week 2370 public participation seeing no comments from board and then turn to the public does anyone in the public want to comment on policy number 2370

I'm going to take item number 3.9 by itself and I have a second. Following our discussion, Ms. Stonway, do you want to update the board on this? This was from the internal audit that we've done the last couple of years in the June 2020. We submitted a record action plan and the state is asking for that. in our response to the comments that were made that we just specified who was going to do the corrective action and what it would be completed by. So a lot of these items were already addressed in the most recent June 2021 internal audit comments, but they wanted
us to resubmit June 28th. So there were nine comments, six are already done and completed, and three are ongoing right now. So we just added those in. Great. I just want to confirm that the U.S. Committee was made aware that this was going to take a place and that we were going to adopt the revised copy. Thank you. Any other discussion? If there's no further discussion, we'll call for a vote. All in favor? I am casting 5-0. I'm going to take that 3.10 by itself. May I have a second? I'm going to call for a vote. All in favor? We thank them, the people that have donated. That will be added to the fund. Any other discussion? If there's no further discussion, call the vote. All in favor? And it's passed 5-0. Thank you. I'm going to take

I'm going to call for the vote.
So, you know, discussion, regular discussion. We'll call for a limit. All in favor? I am passed. 5-0. Thank you. I have a second walk-on item, item number 3.20. I will read it. Superintendent of Schools, Board of Education upholds administration denial of the late transportation request submitted by the parent of the student-identity photo on confidential schedule A. Second, I'm realizing item number 3.20. Now, Adrian, did I take a second on that one that I just walked on? No. Okay, I just caught it, so I'm sorry. So that vote is no, so I'm going to now, again, walk on 3.2, unless there's
any other points of order. Mr. Sheehan, I should miss an equal second to the vote, but I'm going to take it again. Okay. Thank you. So, first I'm going to take a second on 3.2. I have two things. I just made the name correction on 10.13. The last name listed is spelled to be there. Y-U-R-I-L.
Y-U-R-I-Y. Y-U-R-I-Y. Y-U-R-I-Y. On there, I have number 10.13, the last name listed. The last name listed on the list is first name is spelled Y-U-R-I-Y. and I have a second discussion. Thank you. Before we move to open time, I just want to point out that I did forget to mention one item in the board report, which was that the board has a time of year announcement opening for committees. There are a number of committees where we happily look for volunteers to serve on based on their skill set throughout our community. The first one is the board committee. We have two openings. Capital facilities advisory committee, we have two openings. Our educational advisory committee, we have two openings. And our financial advisory committee, two openings. Rate description, the audit committee, we all work very closely with
our central office of assistance to the business, together with our auditors, to review the audits of the district. Capital facilities is pretty self-explanatory. They work together with our assistant super business and our director of buildings and grounds to review and make recommendations on a priority basis in regards to our facilities. Educational Advisory Committee serves in capacity of a number of roles in part as a supporting arm in development and discussion in regards to academic and social initiatives throughout our student body. And the last one is our Financial Advisory Committee which serves in part as an advisory arm in regards to the financial status and financial decisions that are made throughout the district. So if anyone's interested in applying for any of those openings, effective tomorrow, the application will be up on the district website. You
can probably look for it on the homepage or certainly on the board of educators. I'll be welcome all the way to the bottom of the board. With that, I'm going to turn to the last working time. Is there anyone that wants to approach? Michael? Do I need to? Please. No problem. I'm just going to get my mask on. So yes, it's the 20th anniversary. And you give a lot of reading on it, and you learn that some states and some schools teach 9-11, and others don't. So I was wondering, 9-11 in our school district. And if we do it, and if we do it in one capacity, how is it? you know a mention or is is Students looked at different books talking about some of the heroism on the day, really focusing on people
coming together. Seventh grade, it also focused on how individuals are impacted on the event. That's when we start teaching about it in social studies classes. And then also grades 8 through 12. We do school, we have a variety of activities in different social studies classes, ranging from personal stories, interviews, mostly focusing on... the again the unity that came from the event and also the data services conferences so i've got to bring in the lightspeed a little bit more to that that would be useful thank you thank you uh yeah i'm curious because i did so much reading about it i was surprised that the that the that the range is so wide that's there If there was a model, I don't think there's an official model of 9-11, but if one existed, we would never
forget it. And it would be pretty easy to forget, despite never forgetting, it would be pretty easy to forget it if we're not using this information, if we're not facing it down, you know, each year. So I think what Mr. Jensen alluded to is it's actually going to probably start to show up in history books as we should have written and certainly before the printing. As history books, I know they start to be written out every day ever since it's taken place. It's simply a day to take reflection, to take a moment of pause. And although this particular year fell in connection with our homecoming, which was the sketching conference through Section 8 and the way they put the program together. are shared programs are replaced and much debate of a very well diverse committee
that they were selected and they did not all notice that today as it was acknowledged uh and presented at each of the events that took place so you know it's certainly something that this district district this district has made a very strong effort to acknowledge Well, I'm just pretty sure that we've covered it. But I'm just wondering to what degree it might be. So we looked at an event that really looked at some of the images of the day. One particular lesson that we were using some of the images from the day. to really um a lot of students who you know some of the students in the k-12 system have been alive and so that allowed them to uncover some things that maybe they didn't know about that day and then after that um
tracing tracen lincoln is between the events of that day and some uh global affairs that have happened since that's mostly grade 11 and 12. There also was a program presented by the Museum Memorial in New York that interviewed some different individuals who had that direct impact. Those are the two big things that you talk about today. Unity that came from the day, people helping one another, because that especially for students up until grades 10 and 11, they can relate to. Also a challenge for us is the timing in the academic year. where teachers are only knowing their students for four or five days and then this this day comes up and they have to relate it to students in a way that really has an impact on them and is also sensitive to really the
the parts of the day instruction of the day so i think those are that's why those things tend to come up a lot and what we do in k-12 instruction but to a degree also what relates to the courses will help students understand some of the connections to Warnock-Gamestan, Warnock-Rac, some of the laws that were passed here afterwards, and also a lot of the different programs that the government put in place to help those people who are affected by it. Thank you. You bring up a great point, unless I misunderstood you. It sounds like we, as a district, spend time talking about 9-11 on or about. 9-11. In other words, we're not talking about necessarily February as a school day, or we're not talking about it in March. I mean, when we teach the history
of this country, we don't talk about the American Revolution in July. Whenever it comes up in curriculum, we just keep a lot of time on the American Revolution. We don't even talk about the school day. We only talk about the dream. So, unless I misunderstood you, it sounds like we're getting a focus very early in the school year. I'm not quite sure why that would be, because there are so many things. Dr. Kahn has talked about thousands, and certainly, I mean, with the San Diego, the Anaheim, I know some said that one years ago. In fact, I can think of a hundred different things. And again, these students, not one of them, not one of them is alive during this time. So why wouldn't we focus on in September? So to that point, too, it
comes up in the actual state curriculum framework of grades 8, 10, and 11, where those curriculums are chronological. So in those grades, students will be talking about it again when they get to, you know, the... end of the 20th century. So the students would be again dealing with it outside of the context of that day, but we do use the when that day comes up on the calendar, especially a year like this, the 20th year since it happened, to also focus on that day. So it does come up again during the year. So it's fair to say that throughout the students' academic career, they're talking about this event quite a bit. 9-11 is definitely in the state curriculum in the last years, as Mr. Jensen said. But, you know, to your point, to the way
we all feel, it's more than just having it in the curriculum at a certain point. It's taking the time off of the online to make it real and authentic for kids at the time when it happens. That everybody, whether it's the time that the state curriculum says you teach it or not, that everybody at home should know. I have another question, but I'll wait my turn to send the other one. Susan, Amela, thank you. So a lot of this related to things that still were not in place because of COVID last year, but oil ended up being more significant than it usually is. reserves so that you can also use that to offset the budget. About 4 million, maybe a little over 4 million surplus is roughly what QuickMath says that's about 93% of the
budget being spent? Probably. Does that sound about right? Did I get that right? Yeah, it was like that for two years in a row. And what was the surplus last year for the 19-20 budget? It was about... Right, yeah, it was in that range. So that's, because I know we try, it's not a perfect size, I get that. But 493, we're settling back to that year, isn't it? It's any better than that. They're just cold, they were struggling. I'm totally agree. We were hoping. We were hoping we could do what we wanted to do. Nobody could have budgeted for COVID-19, right? Okay, I just want to get an understanding of what it was like. Thank you very much.
