001Just for the record, we need a motion to open up into public hearing. I'd like to make a motion to go into public hearing at 6.04 p.m. I'll second. I have a first by Mr. Martinez, second by Mr. Mesa. Okay, now to go into public hearing at 6.04. Ms. Villalobos? Aye. Mr. Cantu? Aye. Mr. Gallegos? Aye. Myself, Cesar Martinez, aye. Mr. Mesa? Aye. Ms. Garza? Aye. Motion carries. Good evening. Madam President, members of the board, and Dr. Puig, tonight we're presenting the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas, known as FIRST. I believe you each have a copy of the full detail. And we're not going to go through every indicator. We're just going to highlight the points. But you have all 22 indicators on your packet, 21 indicators. Okay, so the purpose of the FIRST,
002of course, is to... It's to rate our financial quality of the school district and ensures that the schools are accountable for this for not only student learning but also for achieving the results effective and efficiently with funding. To determine the rating we get a score of A through F and this year our score is a 96. We are up two points from last year. And the full printout that you have will show our comparison from last year's rating to this year's rating. Now, the 24-25 school district rating is based off of the 23-24 financial data. So we're one year behind. And so the comparison of this year is 23-24, and it's comparing it to the 22-23 fiscal year. So our rating of the 96, we are four points short of the 100 score. And one
003of them is to indicator 12, which they're rating our future debt requirements against our property value. So what we have on here is the three years. So even though we didn't achieve all 10 points, as you can see for each year, our ratio is getting better. Once we get our ratio below the 4.0, we will receive all 10 points on this indicator. So it's improved, which is not at the 10 yet. The second indicator that we're right below the 10 is indicator 13, and this is the school district's administrative cost threshold. We are at eight points, and as you can see as well, we've gotten better. We went from .15 to .12, so we are doing better on this indicator as well, so we're hoping for next year we'll hopefully get the 10 points on
004this one. And these are the only two indicators that are keeping us from a score of 100. And that's a quick nutshell. Any questions? Yes, two point gate. Thank you, Ms. Cisneros. Any questions for Steve? I'm sorry? Go ahead, sir. So the administrative cost ratio, I know we were improving over last year. This year, we also reduced what we call function 41, the administrative cost. Will our auditor give us a projection based on... Yes, they will give us a projection on the 24-25 school year, which will show this time next year. Because our 25-26 first rating will be based off 24-25. So when the auditor comes, hopefully next week, he will give us a projection for next year's score. Trending in the right direction and greatly appreciate your meticulous attention and really your strategic mind
005in making sure we're allocating resources in a way that impacts student outcomes. Kudos to your team. That's an outstanding rating. Thank you. So you mentioned function 41? Yes, function 41 is the administrative cost. It's mainly the cost that's in this building, a majority of it, not all of it. But it's our 41 and our 21 combined. Thank you. Oh, yes. For the record, Mr. Marroquín is present at 6.08 p.m. Any questions or comments from the trustees? Thank you, missy's nettles any questions from the public in the public hearing the public anybody in the public any questions That was about a four minute public hearing that it's Madame president like to make a motion at 609 that we reconvene into regular Into our regular board meeting from our public hearing First by mr. 007he was selected as the proud your picker recipient Tonight we are honored to recognize a staff member who is constantly caught in the act of going the extra mile. Mr. Portillo embodies what it means to be proud you're a picker and he demonstrates this time and time again. He plays an active hands-on role in our animal science pathway, supporting doggy daycare events and taking students and their animal projects to and from competition and so much more. He also makes sure our teachers have what they need to support students, whether it's in a barn, in a beauty shop, in a kitchen. And in recent years when programs like our animal science, health science, or geometry were
008without a teacher, he stepped right in. And he learned the material, he taught classes, and ensured that students continued progressing without missing a beat. He goes above and beyond in every way. His commitment to student growth, innovative learning, and community engagement make Mr. Portillo a truly outstanding educator and leader. 011and ignite brilliance. At this time, we officially present this check, once again, in the amount of $31,170.85 to the Robstown Independent School District. Thank you for your support, leadership, and commitment. You guys are doing great work. Thank you. I did. Yes, I did. Yes, you were. and it's now available at a Walmart. Yeah, this is a bonus check to that because it's not as big as the Robinson ISD Education Foundation, but it's something, it's something. So I'm here representing the Education Service Center Region 2. I am a board member. I don't know if everybody knows that, but I am a board member. And I have a check, and this is for the... Good Buy Purchasing Program that the service center is involved in Region 2. And this year, the 24-25 physical year, we are returning
012over $117,000 to Good Buy board members. We thank you for using the Good Buy Purchasing Cooperative. and it is our pleasure to provide this profit-sharing check to the district for $2,430.27. Woo! Thank you, Mr. O'Brien. Thank you. There's a game today. I was at a funeral services this morning. This is what I wore today. So, okay. Thank you everybody. Thank you. Next item on the agenda, president remarks. So I just wanted to give a little update on the Rob Stein Education Foundation Golf Tournament. Yvette, would you like to say some words about that? She was the point of contact and it was a great event everybody. Yes, we really really really enjoyed having everybody participate in it and They had issues with mosquitoes. So next time we'll be sure to supply some spray, you know
013But everybody seemed to enjoy it. I mean the food was delicious. We had a wonderful time Miss Garza was on a team. I'm sure you did very well. I carried the team. Yeah, I knew it. I knew it For the record, Edma. For the record. But yes, we just want to thank everybody who participated, who helped out and contributed in every way. You know, it is always one of our biggest successful events. We do have our next one. It's going to be coming up, and that's going to be in March, I believe, or April. I'm sorry. April. April, and that's going to be the luncheon. So we're really going to be working hard for that, and we love doing what we do. For the kids, right? For the teachers. But thank you all, everybody. Thank
014you, Ms. Villalobos. Great update. Next, upcoming board training opportunities. So Galveston is in March. Is it March 3rd and 4th, sir? March 4th through the 7th. 4th through the 7th. So I let Dr. Puig know that I would be interested in attending that conference just because I feel that. We felt a void when we didn't attend it last last year But I'm willing to go if any board members would like to volunteer to go I I would like to go Also, I would like to turn it over to mr. Martinez and miss yellow both they also attended a training this past week This is the one in If you guys would like to talk a little bit about the training you attended. So we just, Ms. Villalobos and I attended the same sessions, the same
015conference, I'm sorry. This was a fall legal seminars I attended. It's a one-day training that I attended in San Marcos. Ms. Villalobos attended hers in South Padre Island. It was a lot to take in within eight hours. It was a one-day training, but it was an all-day training. And some things that were on the agenda were compensation and other board staffing decisions, an overview on the new laws in regards to the Open Meetings Act, and specifically in regards to school board trustees, the board's role on any business decisions. They did go over that, and they mentioned some... policy updates that we can be looking at as far as we expecting them to come in on the legal aspect and then of course us changing it on our local on the local site as well they
016did touch bases now on the parents rights in schools that was very eye-opening lots and lots of changes coming in regards to that they gave a legislative update and it was because of everything that's been happening correct remember you know all the what we've had like with COVID then we had the U of R the strong So they've touched on different things as far as why we're having to go about what we're doing, the laws that are being put in place, you know, the safety measures that we're having to have now consider, you know, that we have to have our training, we have to be sure we have our drills. they touched on many different you know safety belts you know seat belts in the buses that's going to be taken into effect also that's
017going to be a law that's going to be put in place not until about 2029 right that it's actually going to have everybody but the good thing is that the schooling will be able to apply for grants you know funding get assistance you know different things for those that may not be able to you know financially afford certain things that they're trying to put into law I'm sorry. No, that's fine. So they're going back on that and of course they go into more depth and detail. I actually have a little presentation that I'm gonna be giving out to the board members that on the notes that I took specifically and They also give a legislative update and an overview and all the new laws and cases So it was a lot to take in but
018a lot of changes in regards to school in general public schooling So very informative. I know I was sending pictures throughout the whole We were all in class with you. Yeah. Yeah, I didn't want to keep sending pictures to you. I have like a whole thing of pictures. I was like, no, I'm going to keep going over and everything. But no, very informative. I'm glad that I was able to attend that. And then, of course, with all the details and notes that I took, I'll be sharing it with the trustees. I'll be getting them as valuables to make sure we're not doubling up on that. But thank you all for allowing me to do that. And it was fun. It was great. yes I enjoyed it as well I think the same it was great
019I mean like I said it's a lot of things that we ended up having to you know kind of like what we've already been aware of you know that we've been informed of like you know the safety measures stuff like that they kind of like kind of want to redrill it into us you know like this is important keep this going so and our district we're awesome we do it all the time so it's like not even aware and they even ask you know over there well how many of you We do it. We do it. We take care of everything. We're good, you know? So it's like, oh, yeah, Rob's down. All good, you know? Like, that's what I'm talking about. But, yeah, I mean, it's like, you know, and the officers on our
020campuses and, you know, stuff like that. That was House Bill 121. They went through every kind of bill that they possibly could think of, you know? So, I don't know, between the both of us, we had a lot. But it was fun. It was fun. Well, thank you, Mr. Martinez and Ms. Villalobos for investing in yourselves for the betterment of our kids. Next item on the agenda, superintendent reports. Dr. Pui. Thank you, Madam President. Thank you, Madam President. Trustees, Mr. Tiger Gonzalez will. Pull up this month's report. So if we'll go to the next slide you notice that that winners We're gonna cover these items here everything from enrollment We handle the donations already. So we'll roll through this pretty quickly if we'll go to the next slide here's what I really want to focus
021on tonight and the one takeaway from The presentation from the report is, again, just being mindful of the power of attendance and how it impacts our bottom line. We know we have an outstanding superior rating from first tonight. We want to keep the rating. That means we have to practice good stewardship. One of the things I want to give a lot of props to and kudos to the campuses, you see the attendance at this point last year and the attendance this year. Those are green arrows. Every bit of a 10 if I trended it over the last three years you'll see it's it's all the way up so the attendance strategies the attendance committees the incentives all that the Administrators are doing just want to give them a big round of applause. So thank you
022all for that So attendance tenaces remains like, you know, it's it's it's ongoing and continuous improvement process, right? But here's also a reality to go to the next slide is the enrollment. So we go to the next slide You know, the last two years we have seen a good 150 increase in enrollment, right? I want you to look at the last row. So today we are down 101 kids. 101 kids, okay? That's about a million and a half dollars. That's real. So as we practice this stewardship, we have to understand. Mr. Monacan and a couple of trustees asked a very good question. Where are they going? Well, we've got a list and I won't go through every every single Place they're going with the largest place. They are going almost 40% of our kids homeschool
02338 kids out of 101 or homeschool 25 at secondary and We've got the remainder here in Elementary that we pulled today. So this is a this is a reality This is the new landscape of public education, unfortunately, and that is that there are options T a knows that these are real options the state knows they are real options that parents are going to be incentivized for Through educational savings accounts. So how do we counter this we counter it by being good but keep moving in the right direction all of us elevating our craft our practice and Making Rob's town as brilliant as we professed it to be but that's real that bottom line right there So if we go to the next slide We will talk about this and a lot of historical trends in
024budget and finance with the entire community on January 14th. That's a Wednesday at 6 p.m. The location is still TV. Yes, absolutely. Yes, absolutely. The entire board will be invited. This is a community affair. We've got to come together as a community to understand the strategic importance of. financing the districts and all the initiatives that we're talking about, whether it's a field house, whether it's tutors, we have to be mindful of the budget and we'll talk about that then. Go to the next slide, please. I'm gonna underscore, it is. Not a not not a small feat to achieve superior ratings in the new climate that we're in the indicators have changed Mrs. C's nettles, you know that and they're still changing. It's become harder and harder So again, I want to underscore this is a
025big deal and we want to maintain this in fact Challenge to the business office perfect score next year. Here we go 90 not you're not gonna do 96 TEA was here and during the academic update will unpack that more But I just want to lay this out again because this is the strategic plan If somebody talks to you at HEB, what's your strategic plan? Really, it's four pillars. It's making sure that our Tier 1 instruction is solid, our professional learning communities are supporting Tier 1, our learning walks are driving the PD that drives Tier 1, and then we are constantly coaching in the district on Tier 1 instruction. TA was here, and we'll talk about it in just a bit. We go to the next slide. This Thursday night, here we go. We're loud and
026proud. Cotton Picker football is on the rise, and this is fun. It was a good time Friday night. I mean, it was absolutely electric. Ms. Alanise, you were sharing that your girls were going to go home. They're like, no, we're not going to go home. We're going to stay to the end. Everybody was hanging on the edge of their seat. It was just a beautiful night for the community. Mr. Westfall was recognized, too. Just a beautiful night. So we'll see if we can get a... Bus together potentially and if we need to have a strong enough demand Well, I'll hop on a bus and go to be bill together if possible so we'll talk about that between now and then and then the last slide is American Education Week this week so open house is
027Tuesday at Rob's Turner Lee College High School and then Wednesday at seal and then we're gonna reschedule Elementary's because that night is the is the football game. So we'll come back and do those. Okay And that may be all for this evening. 300 seconds. Thank you, ma'am. Did you talk about Thanksgiving break? Oh, so thank you. Yes, Thanksgiving break next week, 24 through the 28th, and then the Christmas break will begin December 22nd through January 2nd. Thank you. Thank you, Dr. Puig. Next item, presentation informational items, academic update, TIA update. Thank You madam president at this time like to invite Josh Garcia and he will have some others that will accompany him as well Mr. Garcia good evening. Okay. Good evening. Madam president members of the board and dr. Quigg We're gonna give a update
028to all things teaching and learning and academics here at the school district Of course, everything we do is rooted in the vision mission and our core values of Robson ISD And we're really going to hone in on where really our strategic plan is, right? And that is just what, you know, Dr. Puig alluded to just earlier of really the pillars of teaching and learning. Tier 1 instruction, PLCs, learning walks. And then, of course, one of the most important parts is coaching, how we're coaching and how we're coaching each other up. We're going to go ahead and open up with how the visit went with Seale Junior High. I do want to invite the CEO of Seale Junior High, Ms. Anissa Trevera, the principal, and she's going to share a little high level of how that
029visit went. Right. Ms. Trevera. Good evening, Madam President, Dr. Puig, and members of the board. I have to say, first of all, that this was one of very, it was a very different TEA visit than we've had in the past. And I think that had to do with the fact that from the very beginning, they stated that they were here for support and to support the campus. Aside from that, we had our partners from the ESC, you can see by the picture, and I can say out of the four. all of them have been just really involved in everything that we're doing. Miss Janeway was very supportive last year with the effective school framework, with our TIP plan. She met with us constantly. Mr. Leal. who's there as well has been working with us since
030last year with our reading department and with internalization protocol and just been in it with us and of course we had our district leaders there they were very supportive as well in making sure that we told the story the way we wanted to right and that they were our visitors and we were going to share what it is that we've been doing because we've been working very very hard at seo junior high and so we spent about 30, 35 minutes at the beginning, and it was just our roundtable. And it was just a conversation about all our works that supports the pillars of teaching and learning. And so... The biggest takeaway again has been just the collaboration, right? The accountability at SEAL rests essentially on eight teachers, the four reading teachers and the four math
031teachers, and they can't do it alone. So for us, it's been that mind shift and shifting the mindset of the campus and saying we all have. just to use Dr. Puig's words, skin in the game, right? It is all of us that are tied to the rating and it is all of us that are responsible for learning at SEAL. And so this summer, our leadership team, we really met and we said, okay, what should reading look like at SEAL? Or what should math look like? And what is the expectation? And then what do we need to do to make sure that happens? And so everything that we've done since then from our PLCs to our learning walks to the feedback that we've given teachers is tied around that expectation and being systematic and having processes
032in place to do that. And so we spent a good time, a good chunk of time before we actually went into the classrooms. And then when we went, we said, okay, so our teachers have high quality instruction, materials that we've given to them. Now we're going to see high quality instruction. And so we spent 47 minutes in our advisory class. And so you've heard me speak about advisory. This year, We really structure what happens in those magical 47 minutes, right? Every day. For 47 minutes our students are in advisory and in the past it's gone from we're going to check grades and we're going to look at attendance and we're going to see if we're passing and we're going to close gaps to now we are supporting tier one. And so in our presentation we
033shared an email from Ms. De Leon, one of our teachers, who's so excited because she got to teach a reading teacher and a coach and a picker paths teacher how to support kids in math. And the kids were excited and the kids were like, my coach was helping me. He doesn't even teach math and he was helping me with my math. And again, going back to the collaboration, right? We are all responsible for good quality learning at CO Junior High. So we spent a good chunk of the morning doing that and then we went into some classrooms and got to see our teachers doing what they do best and our students doing what they do best. So it was a great visit. Again, the fact that we're not doing it alone, that our teachers are
034not doing it alone, that I'm not doing it alone, we are all in it together and all of us want for our students to get that education that they deserve, right? And that tier one, strong tier one every day when they're at SEAL. Awesome. Yeah, and just to kind of you know add to that Who was involved in the in the in the visit there at sojourner? I was also ta obviously the education service center with the region to the admin at C.O. Junior High and then of course us district level. And what really was TA looking to come and visit with was the core business. Really just the tier one instruction like Ms. Trevita alluded to and then the HQIM, what we're using in the classroom and if the students are engaged. And they
035very well saw that. They saw we had no indication that that wasn't happening because it happens every day. That's our business, right? And so they just wanted to come visit, see what we're doing and then us to very just show what the strategic plan. of the things that Ms. Trevetta and her team has put in place. Mr. Garcia, let me jump in on the core business. Will you share with the group what that calibration process looked like? So when we look at those three things in our walking group, two independent groups, right? Right. And we come together, what does that calibration process look like on those three items? Yeah, so really they had an observation tool. The TA had an observation tool, and the service center had an observation tool. what are we using are
036we using bluebonnet are we using amplify that's your one instruction is it hqim do we have that in place and then also are the students engaged are they talking to each other are they is the teacher doing all the all the the heavy lifting and then are they actually doing some collaborative work right and that's really what we were looking at right okay But yeah, and that's what we did. As a roundtable, we had two different groups. We had two leading with the folks from TA, and then we were having another group with the service center. We went around, but also we wanted to make sure, like Ms. Chaveta said, that it was really on our terms too, right? And so when we went to visit all of the classrooms, we still asked each other,
037what do we see, what do we hear, and what do we wonder, right? Because, of course, they had their protocol, but we still have our protocol too, right, when we do our visits, and that's really what we do. and we calibrated there within our own groups after each walk. Thank you, sir. Mrs. Chiveta, are you going to add something? Okay. Yeah. But really, truly, and that's really what it was. And like Ms. Chiveta states, it does take a collaborative approach and very, very well said to say that TEA, obviously, when you hear TAs on campus or in the district, it's always like that, you know, shakes right but really and truly they're coming in to really support us right and to tell you here in the picture the one that's really leading the charge here
038is Mr. Edis Moreno he is right there between myself and Mrs. Chavarra in the picture he is the school improvement specialist from TEA that is helping us out and he is all in to help and support us and anytime we have a question anytime mr vedder has a question anyone in the district has a question on how to improve or the work that we're actually doing he's very supportive and very responsive especially helping us with our turnaround plan too so yep any questions on the tea visit i just have one just now that teas are here um sir i know miss garza had asked this question are we still going to have like an accountability workshop with the campuses? Yes. Yes sir. And the district one as well? Yes sir. Okay. So even I was
039worried when TEA was here. So that's not just only because we all have skin in the game up here. I know that we all care about all of our principals and all of our students. So we're all in this together with you. So I know that I was worried about it at work. So just so you know, I said a prayer at work. Be nice to my friends. But kudos to the junior high team and the admin team. They did a fantastic job. Kudos to Ms. Chaveta and Ms. Roxanne Bruton, Candace Rodriguez. They did a phenomenal job and were able to highlight what we're already doing, what they're already doing, and they were very, very pleased at TA. And I'll add to that, Mr. Garcia, you know, Mrs. Chaveta, you and your team just underwent
040some astonishing preparation. No doubt, but it didn't start a week before DEA came. No, it started in the summer and the preparation was fully evident to all participants that day. Am I correct? They were. But again, we have to really celebrate that astonishing preparation because it was a tremendous day of teaching and learning. It's a heavy lift. It's massive amount of work. Anybody who's worn the principal shoes, right? It's a lot of work. And just appreciate that you and your team are all in. And I feel it. Thank you. The math one wants to say something, sir. How are we managing? I mean, I'm part of a teacher group, a lot of teacher groups on social media. And one of the biggest... I don't wanna say complain, that's a horrible word to say, argument, I
041guess. Is the kids are not up to that high level? And as an educator, I know that it takes time before you can get to that point. But how are you motivating teachers or to stay motivated, not feel so defeated? Because I'm telling you, that's just a group, I have to, I got off of one of them because it was just too, it was a lot to take in. So, And I know you personally. I know the support's there. So I just want to know what we're doing here in Ropstown that you're supporting teachers so that they don't feel that demotivation. So I think first of all, we've given them time to plan and we're in it with them. Part of the internalization and module, we do it. So I know me and Maribel, we
042did a training. Bebe, this last two PDs ago, every single one of our administrators were in the, we were presenters. with them so we meet with them this week we're doing our cluster meetings for the first time and our plc meetings and it's like just a sixth grade reading teacher and myself you know the eighth grade teacher with miss bb and so part of it is that right you know because then i know that We're speaking the same language. Mr. Velasco, I don't know if y'all know, is teaching fifth grade math. And he's been like, oh my God, it's so much. But I think that's been a big shift here at CL, just in Robson ISD, is that we are all in it and we can speak to what that is. Aside from that, I
043mean, I'm going to tell you, Mr. Gallegos, it's been a mind shift. We cannot continue to serve always at the bottom, right? We have to give them access to tier one. at grade level and that's what we're looking for. Even when we do our learning walks, we're like, what do I see in regards to tier one instruction? What do I hear in regards to strong tier one instruction? What do I wonder about strong tier one instruction? And for us, we do pre-work. So we meet 15 minutes before learning walks and we're like, I wanna be able to talk to the teacher specifically. She's doing, I don't know, the constitution. Can I speak to that? And at least get an idea. And so then. we're in it with them right and as always it is collaboration
044seals of big ships you know 524 kids 70 staff members but I feel like the doing it together is is the difference maker and then Mike thank you coming into fifth sixth and seventh grade and try to learn how to read is kind of too late that starts at the elementary What are we doing at the elementary level to make sure these kids are learning to read and write and so like that because I've had a couple of you know complaints that their kids are not understanding the the work and you know, they're falling behind and you know Their classrooms are overloaded. I mean, I don't mean to be negative Nancy up here, but you know, those are Questions that I need to ask that were asked today. Absolutely, absolutely, Mr. Messler. That's a great
045question. So how we are combating the early literacy, obviously we have to make sure that the first teach is the best teach, right? Because we don't want to always think about... we're already coming in with gaps. Obviously we do know that, right? But we have to stick to what our pillars are with the tier one instruction. We keep it at that level, right? But what we're also instituting most recently, what we've done is of course we're doing our early screeners, our BOIs and most likely now our MOIs, our middle of the year screeners, is we're instituting our interventionists, our tutors that are gonna... combat the tier two and tier three instruction, right? We always want to start with the tier one instruction, but of course we understand that there are students that are not going
046to rise to that level of complexity and the rigor, so that's where our intervention comes in, right? And so we've already, we've hired on, we've invested into hiring on extra tutors, extra interventionists that are gonna help us combat that gap in literacy. And where these teachers are coming in, some of them are retired, You elementary teachers that have come on signed on with us to be to be interventionist where they're doing actual lessons and that are targeted to what the students need prescriptive almost if you would to tell me you know Mr. Joshua Garcia he needs help on phonemic awareness and that's what his lesson said when he goes with his interventionist that's what she's working with him on right to help try to bridge those gaps obviously we do see that our students have
047some gaps that need to be met and that how we're going to combat it with that intervention that is prescriptive to the individual student and how are these kids being identified like how do you know which ones are the ones that need the help like does the teacher reach out to who does the teacher reach out to to let them know like hey Mr. Marroquin is not up to par with the class. He needs extra help. So that comes with our early screener, the M-Class DIBELS-AID screener that is universal. So they assess them in the beginning of the year, and it'll tell them, it'll tell the teacher, it gives us a report district level and to the campus. It'll tell them that Mr. Mesa... is hitting the mark here, but there's a section here that
048he's going to need some additional help. And when we do our intervention program, it's going to identify based on the data, and it's going to tell the teacher, the administration team, the interventionist, which measures that Mr. Mesa needs additional support in. And that's when they go to their interventions, they get pulled out during intervention period, and those are the skills that they work on with them one-on-one. Or maybe in a little setting, maybe three students at a time. In the elementary level, at what age do they start using the computers? Second grade? First grade? Kinder? Yes, sir. Mr. Mesa, let me invite an elementary principal up to speak to something that Mr. Garcia brought up specifically. Ms. Gianna Morales, will you come up for a moment? I want to talk a little bit about what
049we do in professional learning communities. Here's a reality. The curriculum needs intervention. the curriculum needs intervention that means we are making sure that our tier one delivery is at a very high cognitive load that requires a lot of preparation on the part of the the teacher as Michelle noted also the principal working hand-in-hand with the teacher within the professional learning community so just briefly Ms. Gianna Morales will you speak to that please Good evening, Madam President, board members, Dr. Puig, and everyone here. So our PLCs are when we bring in our teachers and we do it by subject. We have our reading PLCs, our math PLCs, science PLCs. But during that time is what we're doing is we're sitting down and looking at the curriculum. So it's making sure that the teachers are prepared and
050going through it in there. So we look at what are we teaching for the week, what are misconceptions that are going to be, that the students are going to struggle with, and then the teachers are actually working it out so they can go through it themselves to see what the student is working with. So that's what the PLC time is for. And for them to be able to relate to. talk with each other where the issues are and where kids have struggled not only in the past but where they see them struggling with coming up Thank You miss Morales Mr. Garcia as far as like instructional coaches the elementaries how often or is there one at each campus? How often do they visit those campuses? So Robert Driscoll Has the highest population obviously so they
051do have a full-time instructional coach San Pedro and lots speech are shared with one instructional coach the junior high has a full-time instructional coach and the and the High school is managing their with their own instructional leadership team to help coach each other So how often do they visit those other two dimensions? So the two that is shared, Lotz Beach and San Pedro, she is split two days and two days, and then she has a district day for her district duties. Okay. Yes, sir. It's not to say that they don't have the need. The need is there but is also the instructional coach does support the teachers more so in sense of the yeah they do help the students but the instructional coaches coaching and helping the tier one instruction that is happening in the
052classroom as well. But yes there are needs at both campuses. But yeah. And as far as enrollment things like that. Yeah. How many how many tutors do you see yourself or do we see as a district that work. Looking to hire as far as the numbers that you're referring to going for mr. Mesa is right so at each campus at the elementary's we hired on three at the lots beach three at San Pedro and we hired on four additional interventionists at Robert Driscoll AND THE INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES ARE NOT THE INTERVENTIONIST. THEY ARE THE INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES FOR TEACHERS. YES, CORRECT. BUT THESE TUTORS ARE THE ONES THAT YOU'RE TELLING THEM TO BE PUTTING OUT. THE TUTORS ARE THE INTERVENTIONIST. YES. GOING BACK TO MR. MESA'S POINT, THOSE DIRECT. CORRECT. YES, SIR. SO WE JUST FINISHED THE,
053YOU WANT TO CALL IT INTERIM ASSESSMENTS. INTERIM ASSESSMENTS. AS AN INTERNAL INDICATOR. YEAH, WE DID THE INTERIM ASSESSMENTS, ELEMENTARY AND THEN JUNIOR HEIGHT IS CONCLUDING THAT. They will look at that in PLCs and IOT, things like that, yes. They will have some time. Yes, sir. Thank you. So does the high school have instructional coaches? No. No, ma'am. Is that new? That is new to this year, yes. Mrs. Trevino, I'm going to invite her up and talk about her coaching model, SANS instructional traditional coaches and how she does it. Go ahead, ma'am. Good evening. We don't have an instructional coach at Robson Early College High School. I actually proposed that to Dr. Poyt when we were doing staffing. I have a very strong instructional leadership team. I also have two directors that are amazing with data
054and learning walks and all our processes. So I felt that we would have better use of our instructional coaches supporting our elementaries, whereas on our team, it's our instructional leadership team, which encompasses our department heads. Okay. So I'm very comfortable with that. So this is something that you're okay with? Yes. Actually, I proposed that because I felt very confident that our IOTs should be the instructional coaches on the campus. And we have a system in place that really supports what we do at Robson Early College High School. And allowing our instructional coach to go support our elementaries means a lot to us, too. And to Mrs. Trevino's point, that's really the model. Distributive leadership when it comes to coaching, and that is your instructional leadership team, we'll talk about it in just a second, but
055the lead teachers that are able to give feedback and help shape the Tier 1 instruction. So that is happening clearly at Rob Turner College High School. If you are talking as a parent to the teacher, then obviously the teacher is going to be your first point of contact and response there. And then the teacher will escalate that with administration. Sometimes parents call the administration directly, and then the administration will return the call. But one thing we're trying to bolster is that parent direct communication with the teacher. But regardless, if that doesn't happen, everyone here knows our core value of service is very responsive. And if you've heard otherwise, I'd... I'd be open to hearing your story offline and how we can address it. Yes, sir. Sir, I have another quick question just because back to
056what Mr. Gallegos had mentioned. I follow this group on Facebook. As far as like with our students, right? Like let's assume, and this was one of the questions that was brought up there actually, not just in our district, but as a whole, but I wanted to see what we're doing as a district. Our counselors or social workers, how often do they go? and maybe meet with the students as a whole in the aspect of motivating these kids to want to be in school. Because I understand it's a heavy load for the staff to want to get these kids to read, want to get them to understand the material. But at the same time, we have to be realistic that some of these kids just don't want to be at school. They are... against school completely
057or they may be going through some issues at home. What are we doing to motivate these kids to want to come to school or to want to, like who does that? Is that something that maybe the counselors can do or is that a campus level to just make them want to be here? Well, I think everyone is responsible for that beginning with the classroom teacher, but every counselor plays a role in that too I don't know the specific schedule, but you asked about counselors. Yeah, I'm just I just didn't know Yeah, you know get them all in here, but I know through our character counts programs I know that the counselors are involved in shaping some of that motivation. Does any principal want to speak to that specifically about that? Just something it's just a
058general question to how do we keep them? You know, what are we doing? Is this? school or just in general to make them want to? Yeah, I think it's like Dr. Quick said, it really is a we business when it comes to motivating students, but specifically towards our guidance counselors. We meet with them and they strategically go in there throughout the year and speak to kids. We have a cycle going through DAP. They were in there two weeks ago talking to the students about the importance of GPA using our Naviance. software to keep track of their own um transcript how to request a transcript and all those important items that they need to be aware of as they transition through their four years at at high school but it truly is like everyone on board
059when it comes to to motivating students and being just aware and that's why it's so important for everybody to be visible you know the um at the high school i've i've shared that they're a doorway away from their students They need to be the first person that a student can contact and they shouldn't have to go through a secretary to get to their counselor or to their principal or to their assistant principal. So I think just being very visible, assist. I know Ms. Morales pulled her office out and she's in the middle of Robert Driscoll now and it's just a practice that everyone's there. We're all in to make sure that our kids' needs are met and that we're in the know of the campus. Thank you, Mr. Vigneault. It's call the principal up tonight.
060That's what it is. We're gonna call it so miss mrs. By the we come up for a minute and let me tell you how miss buddy is doing I'll let her explain it You know part of motivating kids and part of motivating staff and really lifting our entire district is anchoring to the core values and I mean anchoring the children's effort to the core values and Miss by the is relentless. I'm not gonna steal your thunder. But how do you how do you unpack that at your campus with your kids? I've seen you in action go. Yes, what we do is of course the teachers teach the core values. We used to do it once a month, but now we're doing them every three weeks. And they're exposed to the core values. And it's not
061just that they're taught the core values, it's anywhere that we see them, okay, we basically validate those core values. Because we don't want them to just. you know, talk about the core values but live the core values. And so what we do to motivate our kids is that we have leadership celebrations. And so the kids have to earn 50 points to attend. And how do they get to attend those celebrations is by... the core values, demonstrating and living those core values by how, you know, doing the homework, you know, showing that perseverance, that responsibility, you know. making sure that they do well, listen to the teacher, come to school each and every day. So they earn those points. And let me tell you, we just had one this past six weeks. It was the clubs,
062and they love the clubs. They say, let's go, we're going to the clubs, Ms. Padilla. And they're all excited about the clubs, right? But it's different. It's different clubs. I know. They're like, we're going to the clubs. Oh, yeah. I love it. I love it. All those watching at home. Yeah. And the clubs were basically the teachers surveyed the kids because we want to make sure that it's clubs that they want to join, right? And it's like the kids are doing slime. The kids are doing karaoke. They're doing nail polish. playing outside, and the kids get to choose the third to fifth, second to fifth, get to actually choose the club of their choice. Once it's already out, then okay, there's a certain number for each club. The lower grades, they switch within their classrooms,
063right, because they're younger, it's harder for them to switch. But the kids love the clubs. And let me tell you, the ones that didn't, Ms. Palacios and I went and talked to them. And they already knew. Like, I had 35 points, Ms. Padilla. Like, I was almost there. And I said, okay, well, what are you going to do differently? And so they started talking, you know, what they're going to do differently, do their homework, listen to their teacher, come to school each and every day. I go, you come to school each and every day. I go, you get a point to just come to school. to school and you can go to the clubs, you know. And let me tell you, that's really popular. You know, they love the clubs. So like this year we're
064doing the clubs again because they love them. But this upcoming six weeks, what we're doing is we're doing the bingo bash, okay. And then next will be the leopard boogie, you know. So we do different things to motivate the kids, you know. And the flyers go up. We put them on Facebook. And the teachers let the kids know in lunch. I talk to the kids about it, you know, about, you know, earning those points and exhibiting the core values each and every day, you know. I really like that, that you're using the core values to make school fun. You want them to be in school. And that's basically what I was trying to get at. I mean, I just wanted to, again, because we don't know what to have going on at home. And if
065they're not comfortable here. You're not gonna reach them. I feel like you need to reach their heart before you reach the mind. That's just how I feel and One thing I will say that I didn't get to mention it at your Veterans Day ceremony the kids recited They read something or they said something about service the I guess they know but it was like their Leadership or what was that? The little it was like a phrase that they said That one, the last piece. I really like that. I mean, they, you can tell that they just, it's in, it's embedded in their mind and you can tell they truly believe what they're saying. So I, that really, really moved me on that event. So they, they say it every day, every day. They say it
066with coach Pacheco in the intercom. Well, thank you. Thank you so much. You know, we also do a lot of great things on attendance too. Uh, we have right now a reindeer bash that's coming up. If you come to school every day from November the 17th to December 19th, they get to have reindeer games. And it's going to be outdoor fun. And it's going to be decorating cookies. and hot cocoa and work santa's workshop where they're going to get to read because we also tried in we're instilling the love of reading so we're we're doing a lot of things to try to motivate the kids to come to school because that's number one if the kids don't come to school then they're missing missing out on a great learning opportunity so we can get them
067to school that's a big plus and of course getting them excited you know to continue learning and continue exhibiting those habits, because they're great habits. Perseverance, joy, integrity, responsibility, each of them play a vital role. And of course, joy. Joy. Thank you, ma'am, I really appreciate it. Thank you. You're welcome to come to the clubs. I heard karaoke, I'll be in. Madam President, and we'd be remiss if we didn't invite Mr. Velasco up because you had a story about motivation. This is a good story. The other day we were meeting on your campus. You were teaching. Remember the young man we were talking about that was struggling mightily and you had some motivational conversations with this man. You want to share? Yes. Thank you, Madam President, board members, Dr. Puig. So one of my teachers
068has been out for the last two weeks. She teaches fifth grade math and science. So Ms. Serebia and I said, what do you want to do? Do you want to do math or do you want to do science? Because we do have a sub in there, but she can't teach the math. the actual lesson. So she said, I'm going to do science. All right, so I'll do math. And it has been some heavy lifting this whole time. So I can appreciate what my teachers go through. Not only are they, you know, they're tier one instruction and they're planning and internalizing the lesson, but also doing it for two subjects instead of just one. So I had this young man, I noticed that he wasn't really. doing what he was supposed to. He wasn't even attempting
069to copy the notes and the examples that we had. So the first day went by and I looked at him, you know, he put his head down, things of that nature. And then finally, I came back on a Wednesday and I had, and I pulled him out into the hallway. I said, all right, I know you're, you know, you're not trying at all. He said, well, I don't know what I'm doing. I said, okay. I said, I know you play baseball. And I know you're a utility player because you pitch, you also play outfield, and you're also a catcher. He said, how did you learn to do all those things? I'm like, my practice. He said, exactly. So what we're doing in class, we are practicing. I'm your coach. And who tells you what to
070do out there in the baseball field? My coach, same thing. So if you follow what I'm doing, I'm going to help you get to it. So as we went through the lesson, I went around to him, and I sat with him, and he was able to explain. pretty much everything that we had done. And I told him, so you see, you've always been able to do it, but if you weren't showing me, it would be hard for me to tell you how to fix it, how to fix it. So he did. And I'm not ashamed to say that we went through a problem, and I was working with him. I said, hey, look at your answer here. Like, your answer is off. He was like, no, no, no, no. Like, down here. you know, this
071mixed fraction over here helps me add that one to it. So I looked at my, I'm like, dang it, I forgot to carry the one. So he stumped me. I said, you know what, y'all? I said, he stumped the principal. He got me. So coming to my office, I have a bucket full of candy that I'm not supposed to eat. and come and choose something. So he did, and he came back, so he was really, really excited about that. That was one. Another one was one of my special needs students that I kept telling him, I said, you are the man, you can do this. And he would come up to me, I'm not really the man, I'm not really the man. So we went through it, and he got really good at using pictorial
072models to do that. So before I left, I told the kids, if you need to use the number line method. Go to so-and-so he knows how to do it if you need just numbers go to so-and-so and say and if you need a pictorial model the man over here he can do it and he's just like so he comes up gives me a hug and I'm like So are you gonna tell my mom? I said, yeah, I'll tell your mom So that was a that was pretty motivating for me to see like, okay. I've been out of the classroom I'm now back in it can be done Does it take a lot of work? Yes. So if you step onto the campus, you'll see me running in and out of the office. So that day,
073I taught two lessons, one and a half hours each, did some learning walks, did some other things going on. So it's an eye-opener, but it can be done. And then to motivate our kids, you know, we always start off the day with music. And my parents expect it. When there's not music outside, they're like, what's going on? So that's there. Another one is, you know, she has her service. We have the knights and the virtues. So we talk about those virtues. Scholarship, compassion, courage, perseverance, and generosity. So we use that. everything that we do my counselors when when she goes into the classroom to do her counseling lessons I said always tie it back to the virtues so that's something that we're really pushing this year with our kiddos and you know like like it's
074other parents we're just trying to grow little people into good be big people and we can do that the learning will come along And I did have one student like, I transferred to your school because I hear you throw a lot of parties. I was like, no, we celebrate our kids. We don't throw parties, we celebrate our kids. So we're there, but yes. What goes on at Robert Driscoll? Mr. Velasco, one of those kiddos that has special needs, you said, is probably gifted also. Tell that story. Okay. All right. So I do have another student. So our life skills unit used to hold third, fourth, and fifth graders. This year with Ms. Morales, you know, we talked about trying to service our kids better. So my unit became only third graders. So my other fourth
075and fifth graders, we pushed them out from life skills into the regular classroom. So this one young man, he's been in life skills since, I guess, like first grade. And now he's in fifth grade. He's out there for the first time. But we noticed that there's a lot of things that he can do. And like engineering is his forte. So even in math class, as I'm talking, like, can you tell me? How else can we solve this? And he'll be up there and he'll like, in his little voice and stuff, you know, he's out there and he's explaining and I'm looking at him like, and I tell the kids, did you listen to what he just said? So after thinking about it and speaking with our GT directors, like I want him tested for GT
076because I've also seen him make models, working models, like with Legos. You know, he's make working model with Legos and things are moving around and I'm like, wow, that's pretty good. And I believe he has his own YouTube channel with it. So we're going to test him. We're going to test him for GT. So if he does qualify, he'll be twice. Yeah, twice gifted. Wow. That's awesome. Yes. Thank you. Thank you. Any questions on that still? Okay, we're gonna go ahead and move on. So just get all the principles up sir. Did we get all the principles? Great. Anybody else? Eva, you want to come up? So continuing on, of course, continue on with the core business, obviously things that TA was looking for and moving forward and really just collectively how we're building capacity
077within the whole district and how we're building capacity with our instructional admin and then also our instructional teams on each campus, right? And this is something that we're really investing in and partnership with the Education Foundation, of course, with their donation, with how we are. investing in how we can build better tier one instruction. And this is what we're doing with the work with NIET. Here on the screen you'll see every campus has an instructional leadership team. And some of the principals kind of alluded to that already. But every single campus has a group of leaders that we are helping build capacity and to become even exceptional, more exceptional instructional leaders. And that's what the work we're doing with NIT. In these pictures you see them going through the training of ILT, Instructional Leadership Team,
078with Robert Stell. from NIET and how to really reform and how ILT looks and what that could look like and how and what the importance of having a strong leadership team at the core of your campus and what they can do to help spread the word of the core business of tier one instruction, right? And that's what we're doing with NIET. Basically what we're doing with this partnership with Robert Stowe, you see him there in those photos, the bald head guy. We're improving our unit and lessen internalization. That is something that we are really, really focusing on with our tier one instruction based on our strategic plan, our turnaround plans for three of our campuses. And then we're building a culture of continuous improvement on that tier one instruction. That's what we're trying to build
079with NIET. As a leadership team, as a district leadership team, as the campus leadership team, we're all improving ourselves and that's what we're doing. We're having... consistent training on how we can become better. And very, very hands down to the principals, they said we want to be all in on this and we're going to show that we are going to sit side by side just like how Ms. Trevera said. We are internalizing, Ms. Maribel Trevino, we're internalizing lessons, we're leading these IOT meetings and showing the teachers that we're here with them and we're going to internalize and really just coach them up too, right? And then Just with the work, we're aligning the system strategies and the structures of the school district. Any questions on our work with NIET? Any principals wanna allude to anything
080with Robert? Okay, I know I'm talking a lot tonight, but here's the reality. I am a school teacher, and there are a lot of school teachers here in the boardroom tonight. I am very skeptical of professional development as a teacher. Like, it better be good. It better make me. A little bit more crafty. So the feedback from the teachers on ILT, I am going to invite Maryville Torino up here. Mr. Torino, there you go. We talked a little bit offline about this the other day. Yes, sir, and I can resonate with you. I'm always skeptical when it comes to PD. I feel like it has to be tangible, something that the teachers can turn around and use right away in the classroom. And I was super excited, you know, when we met with Robert Still
081and IIT and the importance of what... the work we're doing as a team as a district collaborating together and bringing all our leaders and saying this is the system this is the piece that we're using k through 12. and one of the big pieces is the internalization mr garcia has made reference to it is how are teachers planning and conversations among principals it was different well internalization is internalization right? How we internalize the lesson, what are the three to five takeaways, what are kids having to learn, how are we going to assess them? So we had a great discussion about how we were not aligned in that process and how were we going to, you know, because we have problems, we come with solutions and we collaborate as a team. And one of the things
082was, is to secure a document. and put our stamp on it and say, this is how we are internalizing as a district. The importance of having a step-by-step on how we look at a unit and then how we plan our lessons and how we assess. And I think we've done a great job as a district aligning that and involving our instructional leadership teams. And, you know, Robert still hit it out of the park with the teachers because he does not, you know, sugarcoat anything. when it comes to the important role you have when it comes to the students and everybody recognizing that we are entrusted with our community's most valuable gift and that is our students. And we do not take that for granted, nor do we want to offer them anything lower than what
083we should be giving them and that is tier one instruction. So great work. great PD sessions, our instructional leadership team, my instructional leadership team loved it. They felt that it was something that we could take and implement and that's gonna have a greater impact as we chase that tier one level for everybody. Good stuff, really good stuff. Thank you, Mr. Mignone. Then moving on to our academic B is just a little update for our science science be academic B's if you remember last year we had Some individuals some of our students that were qualifying to go to nationals. They did go to Orlando They did compete on November 1st. We did host this year at seal junior high We had grades second through all the way through eighth this year It was new six through
084eight did compete in DB's and we did have many regional qualifiers that qualified for nationals. And we even had some that qualify for internationals, right? So, but here's just some pictures of on November 1st, we had students come in competing in science. Academic B, Science B, History B, and Geography B. We had a lot of parents also come in and support their students, so we're very, very excited about the work that we're doing in the Academic Bs. Here are some results, the National Academic B results. Here are the students, the number of test qualifiers that qualified for science. Science 53 students that competed in science did move on to nationals. In history, 11 students. competed and made nationals in history and geography, 12 students, 12 tests that were taken, 12 students national level to compete
085on May 21st through the 25th in Orlando, Florida, a place familiar to me. Yes, the Academic Bee is a club now. We're officially a club, the Academic Bee Club. Off the ground, right, they have an account and everything, so they're so excited. And so what we're doing now, we did just launch our first fundraiser to help us get to the national championships in Orlando, Florida. And that was posted. Ms. Alejandro, thank you for posting that, blasting that out for them. And the students did get... the literature for that to send to their parents and then their relatives. And it is a link that they send out to their relatives and they can donate to the cause. Wow. Any questions on the academic piece? I'm just looking at that logo. Who came up with that? Actually,
086that was Dr. Covarrubias, our GT teacher. She came up with the official logo of the academic piece. Last year, so last year we had 52 students qualify for regionals, and 22 of those 52 qualified for nationals. This year, 82 students qualified for regionals, and then these are your numbers for nationals now. Yes, yes. More than, I guess that's more than double, Mr. Math Teacher, right? Yep. So yes, they are super excited, very appreciative to the team, Dr. Corubias, Ms. Luera, and all of the, you know, everybody that's involved, all the campus principals, the elementary principals, of course, junior high principal, Ms. Chavira, all the, it took a collective effort when we hosted on November 1st, and the international academic competitions were the company that we hosted. Very, very supportive. it was just a great great
087occasion and we're super excited for the next level and we're excited to to now fundraise to get us there well good luck thank you any questions on academic base okay and we'll move on to a tia update i think miss solanice yeah good evening dr puig and board members miss silva's not here today so i'm going to be giving you the tia the teacher initiative allotment update And I know this is Mr. Martinez's favorite part. We will have no more bumpy roads from here on out, hopefully. Just to give you all a quick update of where we're at, on October the 20th, the TIA team, we met to prepare the meeting with the Driscoll teachers, and we spent two days at Robert Driscoll just because they are a bigger campus and have a majority of
088our teachers on TIA, so it took us two full days to meet with those teachers, and when we met with them, we actually let them know. what ifs like if we would have done the scores from last year and their t-test where with where they would have been on a tia level um and then on october the 28th we continue to do the next steps of tia because we're always having to do um keeping up with what's new and you know having our zoo meetings with the rural cohort and on the 15th miss silva's attended a tia panel discussion and over what the progress is, what our purpose is, and what the possibility is. Like I said, we're always keeping informed. It's not like one-stop shop. It's always what's new and what's better. And then
089on the 13th, we met to discuss the teacher survey. We had 66% of our TIA teachers complete the survey. And believe it or not, it is a high number when we look at it across the country. the text across texas but it was very positive feedback that we're getting from our survey you know about you know being notified the information and i mean just some of the feedback that we've heard from other school districts as well is very positive you know and some of them like we're ahead of the game you know making sure that we're meeting with the teachers and you know we're here together we're an open book so we want to be as knowledgeable as possible that way our teachers are you know up to date as well so um and we
090do have um This Thursday, it was not on the calendar yet, but we did have a few teachers that were absent on the days that we went to the campus, so we're gonna go back and loop up on those teachers. I believe it was five, Rachel, that we're gonna visit with on this Thursday, just so that they are in the know, that they can see what their numbers are. Any questions on that? You mentioned you went over the results or whatever. Do we have any teachers that would have already met that? Yes, we did, and that's exciting, because like I said, when we've met with them, and a lot of the, I mean, It wasn't really negative last year, but we did have a few that were, I guess, skeptical. And now that they see
091it's possible and they can see their numbers and actually see their students. And so what we've already done is for our K through two teachers, we've showed them like these are your M class. You know, like I always said, I was like, oh, I want the GT teacher. I mean, the GT students because they're smart. But then it's like you have to keep them there. And so one time when. you know, at the beginning of the year, especially our kinders, and you know, most of them are below level. So there you can have the biggest amount of impact on these students and to see the growth at the end of the year. So, you know, it is surprising when the teachers say, oh man, you know, I'm there, or, you know, I just missed it
092for a little bit, but then it ties back to our instruction and to, of course. our star and is like, you know, knowing each kid and, you know, how many kids are hanging the low hanging fruit, you know, and it's not about, you know, back then the days is like, oh, we just got to worry about the struggling. And now it's literally like no child left behind. So we need to focus on all students and to see, you know, how far they are, where they're at and to work on their deficits or, you know, on their strengths. So, yes. Any other questions? Yeah, it is exciting now that we're, it's a lot of work on our end, but it is good to see that a lot of our teachers are already there and to see
093the kids and the students showing growth. So that's it. Thank you. Any other questions? Great job. Thank you, Ms. Alaniz. Thank you, Josh. Thank you, Mr. Garcia. Thank you to all the principals for coming up with no warning. Next item on the agenda, M&O update. Dr. Puig. Thank you, Madam President. Actually, the next five items are all informational. And I know you all had asked for things to be informational in some evenings. Here's an evening that's informational. So I'm just going to pass out this M&O and safety and security. And then, of course, the list of bills and financials and all that. And then your policy update, MAM-126, informational also. So, Dr. Puig, just so that for, so next month when we go over financial statement, instead of putting it as a financial statement informational
094item, can we discuss a little bit further in detail where we are financially? Yes, ma'am. I know that I've gotten some questions from the board, but just for next month, if we could do that, please. You got it, yes, ma'am. Any questions for the trustees for the informational items? I was about to ask that. So there is an area there that has been renovated. And Mr. Lobby, you want to speak to that area that we didn't anticipate renovating, didn't spend a dime on it, the new multipurpose space? Salazar? Yes, sir. So it's the old library. It hadn't been used in. Years from what I hear so guys cleaned it out painted it Now we can actually host some stuff when they need it for red day. It can host about 70 people easy So it's
095a really good space. Yeah. Yeah, and what just read the libraries zero didn't cost us anything Hard work just about hard work from the guys. I can't take that away from them Financially like financially it's a great move. Wow. Actually, we're gonna have a appreciation luncheon in there. So you're all invited Don't miss it. It's going to be great. What's the date? December 19th. December 19th. I give out some great stuff to the guys. I get donated a bunch of stuff. One of the big items is 60-inch television. Are we included in that? Yeah, you can help serve enchiladas, sir. I'm going to be in Vegas. You've been traveling a lot, ma'am. You've been traveling. So, yes. So, you guys are more than welcome. But it's a good opportunity to show some appreciation to some
096of the guys that do a lot of the work behind the scenes for us. It's at 12. When me a big screen miss the level to 19 December 19th And it's just an hour. We're gonna do a little Mexican bingo some giveaways. I mean, it's gonna be a great time for those guys It's a good time 12 12 p.m. Sir. Thank you for doing that. Mr. Lover. Oh, yeah. Thank you for the invitation I will never turn down a donation sir. So, you know what it There you go that work no, I think we're good sir, that's we got a bunch of stuff like it's it's it's it's gonna be a nice little Time for those guys. I had another question. What do we know what the what the what? The temperature said it over
097it. Oh Yes, sir. We dropped it down. I think it's at I want to say probably like at 73 74 it could be a little hotter but then you know i worry about yeah yeah i was in there today without getting the humidity that's that's cutting it pretty close i think i went in there today you could definitely tell from when it was occupied to now okay so you know it's probably about five six degrees warmer good thank you mr lover thank you sir any other questions for us distribution of 126 is this in here sir yes yes ma'am So this will be the first reading and then we'll approve the update next month in December. Next item on the agenda, consent agenda items. Trustees. Real quick, Madam President, before we go into this, just
098going to be back to recap, but for the record, and I think Ms. Padilla is aware of this as well, but at our... training that we just did in regards to the Texas Open Meetings Act the Anonymous buddy and I had a question on this and they answered my question there that the minutes that are posted online are the minutes that are approved by the board so for the public who likes to Read that information that also will be like a lagging so it'll be a month behind as far as what's on Online when we approve the minutes. That's when those minutes are posted online and any resolutions that we adopt um during our meeting those resolutions have uh seven days to be posted online as well but just for the public to be aware
099that the minutes will not reflect the current board meeting they'll be from the meeting prior thank you mr martinez and i'd like to make a motion to approve consent agenda items i have a first by mr martinez to have a second second by mr mesa i have a first and a second to approve consent agenda miss villalobos Aye Mr. Cantu Aye Mr. Gallegos Aye Ms. Garza Aye Myself Aye Mr. Murdochian Aye and Mr. Mesa Aye Motion passes Thank You trustees next item on the agenda action item discuss and consider approval of selection of a contractor for the Rapsodon Early College High School field house and authorize the superintendent to negotiate contract Dr. Plink Well, I know we went through a very painstaking process to get to this point I don't know that we have unanimity
100on a recommendation tonight for a firm even though there was one that bubbled to the top I think there's been some discussions with the committee members about Pursuing a different Avenue with this and that's okay Sometimes it's better to go You know slow to go far and sometimes it takes us resetting There's been some changes to the project certainly the scope changed because of our budget so Doctor I'm sorry. Mr. Martin. Mr. Mesa and myself were the representative on the committee and this was no easy feat but You guys saw everybody saw that our enrollment has declined and that is about a million and a half of revenue that we're not receiving anymore and that is our Besides our student. I feel that financial Responsibility is very important. So I I I personally just feel
101that this is doing What's best and I know that our kids are waiting with and they're waiting impatiently for what we have taken away But I feel that a week or two week pushback. I feel is best for us to do at this point. We had a lot of great bids, but I don't feel that it was across the board. And now that we've changed the scope, so just to update the board, there was the field house, and then plus the red area, and then plus what other part? The old locker room next to the gym. The old location. So now because of the decline of enrollment now we're only going to focus on the field house right now and then hopefully Mr. Lover with his great ideas and his experience he can work on
102the other on the other part of our project at a later time. Do you guys want to say anything as far as this. It's been a long process. Been a long hard process trying to pick up and to make the right decision for us financially. You know bad for the kids because. So I and we had we three agreed that Hopefully this step that we're gonna take well push back the project but not by we're gonna slim down the Opening to rebid correct, sir. Hopefully we can get it back within what two weeks a week and a half We can have maybe 24 hours now Which dr. Prigg's gonna make some phone calls Well, there is so there's a process if we table the item we're still gonna we're still gonna be a negotiation with
103the number one rated if we want to go out to rebid based off of just the field house then there's an action that must be taken and that is Reject all proposals and rebid the project as only the field house That would be the motion that we would that we would have to take and agree to Yes, corrector Well, we would have to go through the process again, right right they can certainly it's up to them. Yes, sir Yes, sir. That's right. And but they wouldn't have the time frame that they had before it would be a much slimmer time frame So I'm not sure if anybody has any questions for the committee or Dr. Puig. Mr. Lauber was part of our committee. Ms. Trev. Mr. Powell is over there. How far back do you
104think this will push the project? Another month probably. But here's the reality. Everyone has to feel good about it. You know, the committee has to feel good about it. Board members have to feel good about it. We all have to this is so important given what happened previously right, so it's it's important that we you know hit the pause button just a quick reset and Move as efficiently as we can but I got to give a lot of credit to the committee because the committee Visioned this they came together lots of work with mr Powell in coming up with a vision for the field house Lots of lots of brain calories put on this and it was good work that work is not lost It is great work and we need to commend the committee
105for that work. So With that then you are mr. Powell. Do you want to come up and say anything you raised your hand a little? I don't know if you just want it. Oh That you're there. Okay Okay, good. Thank you. Mr. Mr. Mr. Powell. I'm not sure anybody have any questions. Do we so what is it now? Projected I mean you say about a month we were we were expecting it what June July Maybe but August probably let's let's just give us an opportunity to go back and look at the schedule see what we can do to because I know the holidays are coming up to you. So yeah, that's all real. Yes, sir Yeah, well, we'll do everything we can. Yes, sir And I wish we could sit here and just explain everything
106that happened, but the luxury of having a committee is it's just three of us that are in it, right? But I can guarantee every board member on this dais that we really did put a lot of brain calories and we are doing what we feel is right at this time for what we have on the table. and the deadline and the lack of funds now. So I hope that everybody can trust that this is what we feel is the right decision at this time. Y'all as our representatives, I mean, I personally... I'm comfortable with what y'all bring to the table. So I feel like all of y'all have the best interest, right? So whatever y'all's recommendation is, I mean, I'm good with that. I as well. I'm good with it also. I trust that you
107all know what it is that we're facing. You've been in it from the beginning here. You know exactly the information that's been presented to you. So I, for myself, am trusting you all's judgment. And whatever you all choose, I'm for it. Thank you, Miss Villalobos. Mr. Martinez, thank you. That means a lot because we've been very stressed over this. So would any trustee, would you like? Just real quick because it was already mentioned. If Mr. Mesa, you want to recant your, yeah. You want to, the one that's highlighted, if that's the direction you choose to go, Mr. Mesa, that's the motion in yellow. Well, you want to, do you want to. Do you have a recommendation, sir? Do you want. Do you have a recommendation? I'll recommend what we have there, which is basically a
108recommend that we reject all proposals and rebid the project as only the field house. I have a motion by Mr. Marroquin. Do I have a second? Okay. Okay, I'll make a motion to reject all proposals and rebid the project as only the field house. I have a first by Mr. Marroquin. Do I have a second? I have a second by Mr. Mesa. We have a first and a second to reject all. Do we do any questions or comments? No? Any questions or comments? No, no, go ahead. No, any questions or comments? No? Go ahead. We have a first and a second to reject all proposals and re-bid the project as only the field house going forward. Ms. Villalobos? Aye. Mr. Cantu? Aye. Mr. Gallegos? Aye. Ms. Garza? Aye. Myself, aye. Mr. Marroquín? Aye. Mr. Mesa?
109Aye. Thank you everybody next item on the agenda discussing consider approval of the turnaround plans for lot speech Leadership Academy Robert Driscoll junior STEM Academy and seal junior high school for the 2025 2026 and 2026 2027 school years as the targeted improvement plan for San Pedro Arts Academy for the 2025 and 2026 I'm sorry, 2025, 2026, and 2026, 2027 school years. Dr. Puig. Thank you, Madam President, Trustees. We gave a window into the plans tonight, but want to invite Josh Gross here up just to give an overview of how we came up with the TAP and then how it all aligned to the TIP, the SIP, and the DIP, and the strategic plan. Good evening again, Madam President, members of the board. So what you have in your packets is an overview of what the
110turnaround plan is. And basically, based on the accountability, of course, the TEA does lead the charge that, you know, the school district, the campuses need to develop how we're going to get ourselves, you know, out of that distinction or that. that rating, right? So what you see in front of you is the school strategy, the school improvement strategy that the three campuses plus the San Pedro since they are required to complete a Target improvement plan. These are the strategies and basically what the strategy is is what we've all been talking about earlier this morning or this evening I should say is the strategic plan of the the four pillars right and And really honing in on that first teach is the best teach the tier one instruction and then using those high quality Instructional materials
111to drive that tier one instruction, right? And so what we have here is our goal is to exit school improvement by August 20 27 demonstrating measurable student growth by spring 20 26 and these are the outcomes these are the ways that how we're going to do that in in the actual in the actual piece here that you have in your packet is a bark QR code that you can use to access the actual plan that we've developed as a school district along with the the tiny URL that you can use to look on your devices. But pretty much is what we're doing. Everything that we've been doing with NIET, with the service center, with Great Minds for Bluebonnet Math, for Amplify, all of that is all part of the strategic overall turnaround plans and targeted
112improvement plans for the school district. And that's how, that's basically what we are, what we have been doing. As Dr. Puig said earlier today, it didn't start when TEA said they were coming. It started in the summer, it started before that. All that we've been doing, everything that is revolving around teaching and learning are those four pillars of tier one instruction, coaching, learning walks, and PLCs. That is all the work that is in that document that is going to be delivered to TEA to be submitted for those campuses. Any questions on any part of the turnaround plans or targeted improvement plans? I just want to emphasize something with all these plans trustees and community and principals know this we're trying to get everything to align All of the strategies across all these plans have to
113align we have to build synergy in what we're doing And I hope that's what you heard tonight from the principals earlier You want to come up again? I'm kidding. Let's retell the story. Thank you, Mr. Garcia. Any questions from the trustees? Trustees, do I have a motion? I make a motion to approve action item B as presented on the agenda. I second. First by Mr. Martinez, second by Ms. Villalobos. Any questions or discussion? I move forward to approve action item B, Ms. Villalobos. Aye. Mr. Cantu? Aye. Mr. Gallegos? Aye. Ms. Garza? Aye. Myself, aye. Mr. Marroquin? Aye. Mr. Mesa? Aye. Motion carries. Thank you trustees. Next item discussed and considered approval of the learning acceleration support opportunities lasso cycle for grant and allotment application for the 2026-2027 and subsequent school years. Dr. Plink. Thank you
114Madam President, trustees and Mr. Garcia stay up here please and just a high level overview of the purpose process and payoff of this particular grant. Yes so everything that of course we just talked about the HQIM, Blue Bonnet, Amplify. We and the professional development lasso three currently is funding we did apply for several grants blended learning grant XYZ This is the new cycle that the TEA is is putting out the application has now opened for those funds to support the professional development and the implementation of HQIM right and these are the different grants that as a team we did meet and said these are the these are the grants that are going to be available for the next cycle let's align as a team as a district which ones do we really feel that would
115align to our what the work we're doing based on our turnaround plans our target improvement plans and then just basically the needs that the or the district or the campuses need for teachers and professional development and the HQIM. So these are the grants that we are recommending to apply for the next cycle. And that's gonna give us all the funding that we need. Well, not all the funding, I shouldn't say all the funding, but give substantial funding to continue the work in these plans moving forward. And what you have in your packet are the one-pagers to the actual grants we would be recommending to apply for. We have the... The LIFT grant, the LIFT School Improvement PLC Support Grant, the School Improvement Curriculum and Instruction Grant, the Prep Residency Pre-service Program Allotment, the Prep Grow
116Your Own Program Allotment that would help support, you know, retain teachers and get and actually grow our teachers here that are maybe paraprofessionals to turn them into teachers as well. And then our Virtual and Hybrid Program Accelerator Grant that is going to help us build a virtual maybe Academy yeah so it's real exciting all of this fits into the strategic plan but also provides an innovative approach to what may be coming. Tier one is also gonna change with respect to artificial intelligence and we have to be really prepared to pivot quick, because that is here already actually. So good work on these by the way. Yes sir. And the only difference this year from last 03 to last 04 is now we do need to present to the board, get an approval for us to
117actually apply for these grants. So that's why tonight we are recommending the approval for these grants that we have vetted. Is this the same grant that LassoGrant got? Not exactly. For which one, sir? SFI. So the district got the LassoGrant for math and for reading. And then we also got the blended learning grant through Lasso3. Yes. Why there's that change that now you have to get the approval? No, not really, not necessarily. It's just so the conversation is everybody involved. Just everybody's involved in the decisions and also the conversations of Blue Bonnet map, Blue Bonnet reading, everybody's involved. So pretty much everybody being informed. Right, right. Thank you, Mr. Garcia. Absolutely, thank you. Trustees, do we have a motion to accept? I have a motion to. I have a first by Mr. Gallego, second? Second
