Woo! >> to the June meeting of the Trussville City School Board. At this time, I'll ask Jason Daniel to lead us in prayer and the pledge of allegiance. Please stand. >> [clears throat] >> Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day and all the blessings that you've given us in it. Father, we thank you for this city. We thank you for our school system and all the students and teachers and administrators that make it run so well. Father, we thank you for allowing us to conduct this meeting tonight and we pray your blessings on it and we pray that we would conduct it in a way that's pleasing to you. In Christ's name, amen. >> Amen. >> Attention. Salute. Pledge. >> I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of

America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> Thank you. Ms. Vernon, if you'd please call the roll. >> Steve Ward. >> Here. >> Jason Daniel. >> Here. >> Uh Kim DeShazo. >> Here. >> Kathy Brown. >> Here. >> Sherri Holladay. Present. >> Thank you. As this visitors, I'd like to notice at this time, I believe we have Mayor Ben Short with us and president of the City Council, Jamie Anderson. Good to have you with us. And one of our retired board members, Bill Roberts. Good to have you with us. I believe we have the agenda in front of you. Does anyone have any questions? Do I have a motion to adopt? >> So moved. >> Do I have a second? >> Second.

>> Okay, thank you. All in favor, please say I. >> I. >> Any opposed? Hearing none, motion carries. Uh Dr. Barton, I believe we have several recognitions. >> Yes. >> Uh good evening, everyone. Um at this time, I'd like Lance Walker, athletic director, to to come forward. We've got a couple of special recognitions here from the athletics department. Before I ask Lance to take the podium, though, I would like to recognize our cohort two with Samford University. Members of the second cohort, if you would please stand there in the back. All right. Can we give them a round of applause? >> [applause] >> These are teachers and other representatives from uh Trussville City Schools that are pursuing a master's and certification at administration. And we actually have a couple of members of our current administrative

team who went through the cohort as well. So, appreciate you being here this evening. Um and so, with that said, Lance, I'll turn things over to you. All right, we're excited tonight to recognize a pair of champions. So, we're going to give everyone just a few minutes to come in here. All right, looks like we got everyone. So, uh first thing I would like to say about our softball and baseball teams that we're recognizing tonight is just how much I appreciate uh them supporting each other. Really, if you look at the entire year, you know, when our softball team was hosting the area tournament, a lot of our baseball guys were in the outfield uh creating a great environment helping us win. And then the day that we won both championships, softball actually won early

that morning, went jumped in the lake, came back home, did all those things, and then drove back to Oxford to watch the baseball team win. So, that means a lot to me and I appreciate how you guys support each other. This was the first year in 7A history that a school has won baseball and softball state championship in the same year. So, a tremendous accomplishment. All that happening in one day was was pretty incredible. So, I'd like to start with our softball team here. You know, people ask me all the time like how's how's your softball team good? And there there's a lot of reasons, but one thing that comes to mind, I was driving to the stadium in October early in the morning do something on the video board like 6:00 in the morning.

Dark outside, cold, raining, like miserable, no one want to want to be outside. And as I was coming down Husky Parkway, I could see the lights of the pavilion on. So, I kind of thought Brian and some of the red shirts were out there working, but as you got closer, they were out there running. And they work. Softball teams around our state don't work like they do. They are physically tough, mentally tough, and they're really good. So, this year's team was 49 10 and 1 overall record. They were the area champions, north regional champions, and won six games at the state tournament to become the 7A state champions. Since 2019, our softball team has played for six state championships and won five of them. So, next I would like to come up recently named 7A

coach of the year, coach Taylor Burt. >> [applause] >> I just want to say thank you. Thank you for obviously the community support, but we get to play in a beautiful, wonderful place. And we said from the very beginning that we had to work hard to continue to earn that place. Thankfully, we were able to do some things this year that I think contributed to that. They spent hours and upon hours and upon hours with each other. If you saw them in the parking lot just a minute ago, a few of them haven't seen each other in a while and they about tackled each other. So, for them to to love each other and to play for each other like that, because I don't know if you know our post season is a gauntlet and

it's there's a lot that goes into it. It's a lot more than just playing softball. And I'm extremely proud of them. I'm extremely proud of our staff. They are incredible. They spent hours the week before the state tournament. You have to prepare for seven other teams and you don't know who you're going to get. And they did an incredible job of doing that. But I just want to say thank you. Thank you to Lance. Thank you Dr. Martin. Thank you to all of you guys for your wonderful support and providing us with not only the best facilities, but the best opportunity to put the best product on the field. We're very very proud of that. And thank you to our wonderful parents. They were incredible fans and all. Got in trouble a few times for

those. But also But also want to say a special thank you to Mr. Bill. He didn't miss a game. I was really worried about him driving home Thursday night at midnight. So, very thankful for him also. So, thank you guys and thank you for your support. >> [applause] [applause] >> Hey Lance. Lance, we got Bill Robinson. Grab Bill Robinson. Mr. Robinson. Hey coach Bale, can you come over here? Take your inside of the plane. Are y'all ready? On three, 1 2 3 and 1 2 3. Go ahead. >> Coach Parton I want to know what your exact thoughts were when you realized you had to come back for one out. >> Yeah, four pitches. It was it was kind of crazy, honestly. We had to go back and watch watch thankfully the film was already

posted for the night cuz we had to go back and watch the bats because our our charts were done. They were ruined. They were little left little pieces left cuz it rained so hard, but yeah, we were I don't know if you know this, but like you pretty much lay there and just go through every about every situation you possibly can think of. It's kind of torture, but thankfully it worked out in your favor. >> was pretty exciting. >> Yes, it was very exciting. >> All right, I I do want to know what parent was responsible for the fans. Will anybody own up to that? Right there, guilty? Okay, I'm going to remember that. I'm going to remember that the the noise was something else. So, I'm going to let Jamie read this proclamation, but

I want to congratulate each and every one of you. It was an amazing look, it's it was so fun to get to watch y'all do that. I hate that you had to go back for four pitches, but what a story you're going to have for the rest of your lives, right? So, just proud of you, proud of the way you represented Trussville. I'm going to let Jamie read the proclamation. >> Thank you, Mayor. I also hope that nobody jumped on this Go-Gurt in the parking lot and broke her arm. How is our Gatorade Player of the Year doing? How Is everything okay? >> She's recovering. >> Okay, perfect. Perfect. And I um I This is an honor for me to read this to you. This program has come such a long way. I I was

actually on the um softball team at the Hewitt-Trussville when I was there in night from '92 to '94 and um I would not be worthy to carry your bats. So, it has been amazing. Not only would I not make the team, I might not have actually even be like the equipment manager. So, the level that you girls play at is something else. So, um it's so it's our honor on behalf, like the mayor said, on behalf of the whole city council, we passed these resolutions in your honor and so that you would not have to come down to city hall twice, we'd like to read them here. So, whereas Hewitt-Trussville High School Huskies softball team completed an outstanding 2016 season with a remarkable 49-10-1 record, demonstrating excellence, resilience, sportsmanship, and teamwork throughout one of the

most competitive classifications in Alabama high school athletics. And whereas the Huskies earned their fifth AHSAA Class 7A state championship in program history and further cemented Hewitt-Trussville's reputation as one of the premier softball programs in the state of Alabama. And after sur- suffering an early setback in the state tournament, displayed extraordinary determination by battling back and winning five consecutive elimination games to claim the state title. And then during your championship run, as we mentioned, um having an absolute just bludgeon of This bludgeon is not in here. This is my commentary. Bludgeon uh 11 to 0 of Thompson, which in that first game, which was just outstanding. The championship was secured in memorable fashion after severe weather delayed the final contest, requiring the teams to return the following morning to complete the final out, at which time

the Huskies officially claimed the final Class 7A State Championship. And under the leadership of head coach Taylor Burt and her coaching staff, the Huskies continue the tradition of excellence that's made Hewitt-Trussville softball a model program recognized throughout Alabama for its competitive success, player development, and commitment to character both on and off the field. And the players, coaches, support staff, parents, and community supporters demonstrated unwavering dedication and commitment throughout the season, bringing pride and distinction to the Hewitt-Trussville High School and the City of Trussville. Now, therefore, be it proclaimed that the City of the City Council of the City of Trussville proudly congratulates Hewitt-Trussville High School head coach Taylor Burt, the assistant coaches Felicia Golledge, Emily Hart, Maddie Watkins, Leigh Boyette, Jim Bales, Abigail Dorsett, Brandon Herring, athletic trainer Mitch Bibb, athletic director Lance Walker, every

member of the 2026 Huskies softball team and their families for winning the 2026 AHSAA Class 7A State Championship. Congratulations, ladies. >> [applause] >> Tay- Taylor, we're going to give you this proclamation. You have it, Jamie? If you will hand it off to her. I do want to say that was two pages. That was like the third draft. We started with like eight pages and had to pare it down. So, I just wanted you to know we're very, very proud of each and every one of you. So. >> Thank you. >> Taylor, before I move on, can you have the group introduce themselves? And girls, if you'll say your name, what year in school you were. >> Yes, absolutely. Obviously, I'm Coach Taylor Burt, the head softball coach. >> I'm Emily Hart, assistant coach. >> I'm

Abigail Dorsett, assistant coach. >> I'm Felicia Golledge. What grade are you? >> Oh. >> Going into 11th. >> I'm Coach Sydney Younce, going into 11th. >> I'm Erin Cole, going into 11th. >> I'm Corley Golledge, going into 11th. >> I'm Avery Battles, going to be a freshman. >> Can we give Hewitt Trussville softball another round of applause? >> [applause] [applause] >> All right. Next we have Hewitt Trussville baseball, the 7A state champions. Uh this year we had an overall record of 34 and 9. Our last 16 games of the season, which playing really good teams in our area and then the playoffs, uh we had a record of 14 and 2. Uh in the championship round, we beat Auburn 4 to 1 and 8 to nothing uh to win the state championship. You know, if

I had to think of one word to describe this team, I would say unselfish. Um they were a true team in every sense of the word all year. Parents, coaches, players, everyone. Um it was incredible to watch how they pulled for each other and and played their best at the right time. Uh Uh I'm incredibly proud of them. Um on Saturday, um our All-State honors were announced and Coach Jeff Malden was named the 7A Coach of the Year. So, Coach, congratulations for that. I'm going to turn it over to you for some thoughts. >> [applause] >> Uh thank you, Lance. Um I guess he could talk for me because he has a kid in the program. He had a first front row seat. Uh but unselfish is right. Um It started Our season kind of

started in the in the fall. We had a parent meeting in the middle school auditorium. And it was really about a new fundraiser we were going to do, but it turned into a challenge to our parents to be invested in our program and be all in. And kudos to our parents. They really did that. And I I think people ask me, you know, what's how did this team win? And I I I said our parents drove the bus. Not literally drove the bus, but they drove the bus. Um they were all in having they did did meals for our kids. Uh on road trips, they took care of our kids. Um I think the biggest thing was they truly truly um trusted the coaches. I think I think there's a thing where the kids trust

the kids and the the coaches trust the kids, the kids trust the coaches, the parents trust the coaches. It was a total uh family year. And everybody was all in together. I think that's the biggest thing. Um we had a massive hurdle to to uh overcome. We first area series we got swept by Vestavia. And usually when you get swept in the first week, your season's pretty much really close to being over. Um we had a team meeting, then they had a player meeting, and then we won 14 of the next 16 games. Uh, so it is really cool to watch these kids I think most people wrote them off after that series. To watch them continue to stay the course and continue to be together. And like Lance said, totally unselfish kids, unselfish parents.

Everybody just cared about each other. They they love playing with each other. They love uh, playing the game. Uh, it was a total family affair. I think my favorite part other than the end uh, we beat Tuscaloosa County in the quarterfinals. It's all running together. Um, beat them in the second round. They were defending 7A state champions. They beat us in game one, so our backs were against the wall again. Uh, we beat them the next two games, but after the uh, game three on Saturday we were celebrating on the field and we had an unbelievable crowd and making a bunch of noise. I got to talk about that noise for y'all for a minute with the um, one of our parents, one of our senior dads walked out on the field and said, "Coach,

can you come to Can y'all come take a picture?" And we went out behind the dugout to take a picture and there was 100 people there, parents, grandparents, um, fans, siblings, uh, and the dad said, "Is this what you were asking back in the fall? This is a true community." And yeah, you're sitting right there. Um, and that's what it was. That was my favorite part of the season was walk that that picture of of that's our team. It it was a true community thing. Um, I do want to reference I I got to come back to this. First to Coach Burt. Hey. Kevin Todd sends me a text and said Kevin Todd is the head softball coach at Thompson. Is this Is this being recorded before I say anything? Okay. Uh, >> [laughter] [applause]

[laughter] >> All he talked about in it cuz we Kevin Todd used to be a baseball coach. We used to go against each other, but he sent me a text after y'all beat him talking about the ridiculous noise. My players couldn't hear me. Just whined and cried the whole text message. I didn't respond to him. So but um anyway, but thank thank y'all so much. Thank you everybody here. Thank you for all the support. Just like Taylor Taylor said um none of this would be possible without the true support of our families but true support of our administration, our school, our community. Um I I know most of the people in this room knows this. We're nowhere near enrollment to Auburn, Thompson, Hoover, Vestavia. We got to do extra to beat those guys. And I

I think it's a our coach We have the best coaches in the state. I I have the best coaching staff. I think Taylor would say the same thing. We have the best kids. We have the best support. Without that, none of this is possible because they I mean Hoover has almost 1,500 more students than us. Well, that's 750 more girls to choose from, 750 more boys to choose from. But I'll take the ones we get to choose from every day. So thank y'all very much. >> [applause] >> Guys, if you'll go down the row and uh introduce yourself, then we're going to take a picture real quick. >> Uh I'm Paul Duckett. >> I'm Lance senior >> I'm Blake Dowling, I'm a senior. >> I'm Joe Mack Dowling, I'm a senior. >> I'm Dwayne Dowling,

I'm a >> I'm Taylor Adams. >> I'm Elijah McCurdy, I'm a >> I'm August Smith, I'm a sophomore. >> I'm Preston Williams, I'm a junior. >> I'm Ty Johnson, I'm a sophomore. >> I'm Peyton Myers, I'm a sophomore. >> I'm Sebastian Crawford, I'm a >> I'm Sebastian Crawford, I'm >> I'm Devin Kennedy, I'm a sophomore. >> I'm Alerick Williams. >> I'm Howard Colvin, I'm a >> I'm Arthur Harris, assistant coach. >> I'm Jared Bowden, assistant coach. >> I'm Andrew Lance, assistant coach. >> I'm William Long. >> of the assistant coach? >> Kevin Butler, assistant coach. >> All right. All right, I get to I get to read the proclamation for y'all. And to to be honest, coach, I didn't hear anything you said. I'm still deaf in one ear uh from all the horns. So,

uh we did we did talk to Lance. Uh hopefully we'll be able to buy uh the Husky version of those in the gift shop next year. Um uh all jokes aside though, um that is one of the loudest environments I've ever been in. Um and uh I sat right next to y'all until Dr. Martin saved me and let me go to the box for a while. Um and it it was a great experience, proud uh of all of you young men and coaches uh for representing Trussville so well. Um I didn't even know they made uh Ryobi battery-powered version horns. Uh so, I saw those for the first time. Um and you guys, I'm telling you, I've been to a lot of college uh I went to a smaller college. I didn't go to Alabama

or Auburn. Um y'all's environment was louder than any college sporting event I had while I was at the University of West Florida. And that's recorded, too, so they'll probably post that later. But, I want to read this proclamation. So, uh whereas the Hewitt-Trussville High School Huskies baseball team completed an outstanding 2026 season with a remarkable record, um demonstrating excellence, resilience, sportsmanship, and teamwork throughout one of the most competitive classifications in Alabama high school athletics. And whereas throughout the season, the Huskies consistently competed against many of Alabama's top-rate programs and demonstrated the discipline, determination, and championship mindset necessary to succeed at the highest level of high school baseball. And whereas the Huskies captured the Class 7A state championship by sweeping Auburn High School in the championship series, winning game one by a score four one four

to one and game two by a shutout of eight zero to secure the state title and complete a memorable postseason run. And whereas under the leadership of head coach Jeff Molden and his coaching staff, the Huskies continue the tradition of excellence that has made Hewitt-Trussville baseball a model program recognized throughout Alabama for its competitive success, player development, and commitment to character both on and off the field. And whereas the players, coaches, support staff, parents, and community supporters demonstrated unwavering dedication and commitment throughout the season, bringing pride and distinction to Hewitt-Trussville High School and the city of Trussville. Now, therefore, be it proclaimed that the city council of the city of Trussville, Alabama, proudly congratulates Hewitt-Trussville High School baseball. Congratulations, guys. >> [applause] >> All right. Now, we got to get a squeeze in for a

picture, so come on down. I did both. I was heavily invested in both. Were you uh >> I hear you don't have a full-time job, sir. >> Yeah, that's what I hear. >> Were you Were you primarily softball? Is that what he's getting at? >> Yeah, that's what he's getting at. >> Okay. Okay. >> Good job. >> Would you like me to >> He switched He switched the program my sophomore year and said, "Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, I'm giving that up." >> Would you like me to get away from the coach for a bit? >> Yeah. >> I'm kidding. >> All right. You guys jump in. >> Christian and I go >> You got to have a hand in there. >> I don't have it. Christian and I go way back. >>

Right. >> I think I'm No, I'm good. He's my twin. I'm next to my Something else. >> Kevin, you you're sticking around? You're sticking around for the spark? >> Okay. >> I think >> All right. Well, I want to I want to thank coach Lance for his leadership with our athletic department and then also thank our mayor and city council for all of their support. Um as you listen to some of the athletes, you know, just the way the season falls, some of those athletes talked about, well, I'm a senior, you know, I'm in 12th grade, you know, so they've won us This is really if you stop and you think about it, their their last interaction with us officially as students and and stop and think about what a way to go out. You

get to go before the Board of Education with a blue map in hand and be recognized. And almost, if not more significantly, is our retirees. The same way, we have an opportunity, some champions in our hearts, to talk to our retirees and thank them for their years of service here before our Board of Education. So, we're going to recognize them now and I'm going to ask as I say your name if our retirees would come forward. Uh and I know you don't want to. Every year, right? Every year you just want to wave from your seat and then be recognized, but I am I am sorry. Um Sandy Dempsey, you're going to have to come forward. Okay, I know. I know. So, with that said, who is our first retiree? Do you want to hand

>> Um Oh, who's um Let me get my glasses. >> Okay. All right. >> Well, Sarah Westland. >> Okay. >> Sarah's here. >> Okay. All right. Sarah Westfall, if you'll come forward, please. Yes. All right, who's our next person? You say? >> Jennifer McLaughlin. >> Okay. Jennifer McLaughlin. Where's Jennifer? Is she not here? Okay. >> Rochelle Darnell. Okay. I'm going to have you both come up together, Sandy and Ken Dempsey. Do we see Buffy Bland? Is Buffy here with us? Okay. Okay. No Kevin Butler's here. Coach Butler. Okay. >> Susan Robinson. Is Susan here? Is Laura here with us today? Okay. Yeah. Yeah, I see Eddie right there. Eddie, come over. Nope. Nope. You're a good Eddie. It may just be Bullet. Okay. All right. And I don't know And I don't know official hire

date for Bullet the dog, but uh he has submitted his paperwork to retire Bullet. So. Not quite sure. Okay. Yeah. We have several retirees who shared with us that they were going to be on vacation and not able to attend, and so we wish them farewell and thank them for their time of service. But, if we can give a hand to all retirees, TRUSSVILLE [applause] CITY SCHOOLS. >> ON THREE. CONGRATULATIONS. 1 2 3 1 2 3 >> [applause] >> Okay. >> Mr. Kirkland, I believe you have financial report for us. >> First, we are pleased to present the financial report for the month of May. It's in your packet for review. The financial extract has been uploaded to the state department with all necessary um and it's corrected. Uh all bank accounts have been reconciled

to the general ledger. Uh ad valorem revenues are at 85.34% of our budget compared to 88.47% of our budget this time last year. And just continue discussion like we've talked about over the last several um meetings. Um we did increase revenue budget slightly uh based off receipts last year. Um and that's why there's there's a slight difference. Actual receipts are coming in pretty much right on revenue. I think we'll make budget budget. Be close. Uh but we we should end the year right on budget. Uh total expenditures and transfers out in the general fund um as of the month end are 57.7% of the budget compared to 57.19% this time last year. Uh all transactions appear to be of a usual and routine manner within the legal authorization and fiscal management of the board. And

upon board approval, the financial report will be made available for public viewing on our website. Um also in your packet is uh this this time of year for our budget amendment. And um I would like to uh present that to you tonight. You go to the next slide. Um This is the budget that is being presented and you go on to the next one, Dwayne. Um there's basically three reasons to amend our budget. Uh the first reason every year we have to uh roll over the ending balances from the previous year. Uh as you know, we start the budget process uh like in June or July and the the budget is approved by the board before our previous our current fiscal year has ended. So, once we roll over into the budget year, we have

to correct the beginning balances. So, that's um the first reason uh for the budget amendment. Second reason is at the time of the original approval there are allocations from the state department that we just don't have at that point in time. And so, you can see our revenues uh increased uh a little bit over $2 million. That is due to state allocations that we didn't know at the time. Um and interestingly enough, you can see expenditures only increased about a million dollars. Reason for that is some of the expenditures that we had in general fund, we were able to transition to some of these state allocations and to kind of wash some of our our general fund. Uh and and anything that is above and beyond our normal five-month balance will move over uh to

our capital project reserve for future capital projects. And as you can see, uh we're projecting a the ending uh fund balance of $28.2 million. That is five months reserve. Um and again, that is in my opinion, critical to the financial stability of the board. Um we have certain revenues that that we enjoy from the state, but they're non-recurring revenues, uh which means every year they're different and they're not guaranteed. So, just like this year where we're able to to transfer some reoccurring expenditures to non-recurring revenues, that's not always guaranteed in the future. So, having having the reserve is just uh critical uh for our stability. And um that's the budget. We are required to have 1 month um strongly recommended to have three. >> Three. >> Uh we have five, which is kind of you

know, talking to our counter part parts, that is kind of the the goal for everyone is to have that um cuz I mean, we are lucky to have the Rolling Reserve Act, but you just never know when something's going to happen um that that we need those reserves. Thank you. >> Thank you. This time, we'll ask Ava Creamer from Alabama Association of School Boards to present information on the superintendent and chief financial officer's evaluation. Ms. Creamer. >> It's a pleasure to be with y'all tonight. Such an exciting positive vibes from all the students in this act. I'm with Alabama Association of School Board, and we worked with the board to do the evaluations for the superintendent and CSFO. By law, they are required to be presented in public and to be discussed, but we do

feel that the superintendent and CSFO should see those ratings beforehand, so we did have a virtual meeting to go over the ratings and to discuss some of the information. Um the board does leave comments, but since they are individual comments and not a voice of the whole board, I will not be reading those, but they are there for the superintendent to CSFO to review for their strengths and areas of growth. So, and the survey is anonymous, so they are free and hope and hopefully are comfortable to leave the feedback. Are you going to click for me? Okay. I can go either way. So, we're going to start with the superintendent evaluation. If you go to the next slide, it is a four-point rating scale and it starts with accomplished is the highest and the lowest

is not demonstrated and the overall rating from the board was accomplished, which is the highest rating. If you go to the It is broken down into six categories. Of the six, only one was proficient, the others were accomplished. I just want to give you a brief just overview of those. And what we're looking for is that he does work well to build a positive collaborative relationship with you to create the shared vision for the board and establish his clear priorities and goals for the system. He also works to set his district objectives, targets, and the highest standards that are for those goals in teaching and learning. And he collaborates with his staff to ensure that he implements all those best practices for the teachers and students. He also in fiscal managerial leadership works to make

sure that system resources are used >> [clears throat] >> to support the student learning and ensures the safety of staff and students by developing the safety, crisis, emergency response plans to meet those needs. In human resource leadership, he works with the system leaders to make sure that they're utilizing and implementing and advancing the system goals and strategic plan. And what's important is to advise the system and school needs regarding recruiting and hiring new staff. And climate engagement is important because he works to create a positive environment and climate for the system and he monitors that closely to make sure that at all times he's meeting the staff and student needs. So, the overall rating from the board was accomplished. Let me get to the next one. Okay. Does this board have any questions or comments?

Before I move on, just a reminder, you know, remind the board that when you do have different ratings throughout that hopefully that you are talking to each other and communicating that builds that trust and govern for the governance team. So, if you do have concerns that y'all are discussing them and sharing them. So, there's no questions, I'll move on to Mr. Strickland. So, if you go on to the CSFO. Uh there is two evaluations done. The board has oversight for the CSFO with the day-to-day operations fall under the superintendent. So, we'll start with the board evaluation. If you go to the next slide. The overall rating from the board was accomplished. Once again, this is the four-point rating scale. Accomplished is the highest score. If you go to the next slide, they're broken down to

three categories, fiscal, collaborative, and professional leadership. They are also all accomplished. I want to move forward since the superintendent had the same ratings. So, if we go to the next slide. Once again, a reminder that um accomplished is the highest. So, from Dr. Martin, their overall rating was accomplished. Once again, all three were accomplished. And so, I just want to go through and just give you overview of the things that are looked for. It shows that Mr. Kirk um Mr. Kirkham is aware and very in-depth knowledge of the state and federal requirements. He meets all the deadlines. And reports are timely submitted. He had a health style and resource to support the system's strategic plan and vision. Any authorized clear and communication and concise communication for budgets and to all the staff to make sure

they are meeting uh financial policies and practices. Also, for professional learning as a CSFO, So is continuously doing his training to keep his certificate and to maintain knowledge of everything that he um needs to do for his role. So the superintendent ratings were accomplished and the board ratings were accomplished. And I'm going to end with that note. Any questions before I sit down? >> No questions. We're just very grateful for both of you. >> Very much so. >> We are We are very fortunate in Trussville as you can see. You saw exhibit that tonight and how successful everything is and it goes down to our leadership from Dr. Martin and from Mr. Kirkland. So we appreciate both of you and glad to you glad you're with us. >> Well, we we we had a chance

to visit after uh we talked with uh Ms. Cranmore on Thursday and uh that that is wholeheartedly reciprocated. We feel very blessed and fortunate to get to work here in Trussville and work for you as our Board of Education. Um one of the things we talked about as well is it it takes a really good team and we feel like we have the best team um in the state of Alabama. So thank you to you uh and thank you to our Board of Education. >> Good. Thank you. We'll look at the consent agenda. Do I have a motion to adopt the consent agenda? >> So moved. >> Do I have a second? >> Second. >> All in favor say I. I. Any opposed? Hearing none, consent agenda carries. Dr. Martin. >> Yes, just a couple

of items here on [clears throat] consent. Um first item that I would like to point out uh is item number six and that is where uh Mr. Kirk- Kirkland who just he just went through the budget amendment number one, but uh uh that is here on consent agenda. Uh want to thank him and Brian Ferris, uh director of maintenance. If you look at the next couple of items there under the EDFs, um Um, been working on several projects over the course of the summer. A couple of those, and I know Miss Jean Russo will be pleased with these, but uh some much needed playground improvements there at Payne. Um one of the items I know we are rejecting the bid, but that's because of the due diligence of Mr. Kirkland and Mr. Ferris uh being

able to work with a contractor to actually get that cost below the bid threshold. So, the project will still be done, but it's under that $100,000 threshold, so we're able to do that uh with a contractor of choice. Item number 11, night eating for Hewitt-Trussville High School 100-year logo. And this is going to be a neat project. We'll get a chance to hear from three students in July, but the class of '27 represents 100 years of HTHS. And so, we'll have a special logo that is being done. The uh the the the class leaders of the class of '27 are helping to create that logo. And they'll be here to share that with the board, and then that will be our banner for Husky Parkway as well. As you'll see that across the system. So,

sort of neat there to uh to to there there are a couple of us that have students in that class of '27, and we'll represent that 100-year class. Uh moving through consent agenda, members of the board can see facility use agreement recommendations, as well as field trip recommendations. And that makes up the consent agenda for this evening. >> Thank you. Dr. Martin, I believe we have some new business, and first item >> Uh personnel report. >> Personnel report. Okay. Personnel report, Dr. Martin. >> Yes, personnel report. Uh there are recommendations under the personnel report. Uh three recommendations for resignation, one for a resignation of supplement, uh two recommendations for transfer {slash} reassignment, a few for extra employ I'm sorry, extra employment uh extra services agreements. We have several recommendations as you can see there on

page two. Our Our principals have been busy as well as our directors in going out and and finding the best staff to to serve our students. Mr. Chazo and I had an opportunity to go to a presentation down at the Vulcan and Eric Mackey was at that presentation. And one of the things as he was bragging about each one of the the Birmingham area school systems was that city schools is known across the state as one of the highest, if not the highest retention of employees, which I think that says a lot about our community as well as our school system. And so our principals have been working hard this summer to make sure that we have excellent, if not the best, staff members to support our students there with these employments. We have one

recommendation for contract and that takes us through the personnel report. >> Good. You have a motion to adopt personnel report. >> So moved. >> Have a second? >> Second. >> All in favor say I. >> I. >> Any opposed? Hearing none, motion carries. Believe we're in new business. Dr. Martin. >> Yes, item number one to to bring to the board for recommendation is the 26-27 salary schedule, which I will bring up the salary schedule here when we get to action item number four under new business, but this takes into account the legislative increase and brings all of our current salary schedules to the forward to the 26-27 school year. >> Very good. Do you have a motion to adopt? >> So moved. >> Have a second? >> Second. >> All in favor, all say I.

>> I. >> Any opposed? Hearing none, motion carries. >> That's the 2% and the same 2%. >> That is correct. Yes. Item number two, which is the recommendation for the approval agreement for universal breakfast for students here at TCS. And if it pleases the board, I'd I'd like for Mr. Kirkland to explain this program a little bit. He and Terry Coggins have been working hard on this and he has some more information to share. >> Thank you, Dr. Martin. Th- This is very exciting. I feel We were notified by the State Department. Actually, Miss Coggins was part of a group that that went down and talked to our legislatures about this before it was passed. The state has allocated a portion of funds to cover the difference in what we were reimbursed for paid and

free students. I mean, paid and reduced students up to the free amount so that every every student can eat free breakfast for the next year. It's only 1 year at a time because it's it's allocated by the legislature. So, you know, it's certain something we want to continue as long as the state is is allocating the funds, but just a great opportunity to to have every student have the ability to come in and eat breakfast for free. I mean, there's just so many studies about how a good breakfast in the morning affects instruction during the day. And so, I think this is critical for our student body. And and you know, if you're with your blessing, we would love to participate. >> Very good. Need a motion. >> We have a motion to >> Have

a motion to have a motion to adopt. >> I make a motion. >> Second. >> All in favor, say I. I. Any opposed, hearing none, motion carries. All right. Action item number three is an amendment to the superintendent contract and the only thing that I'll say this, I just echo what I mentioned when it came to the evaluation and very appreciative to our board of education and the one thing I'll mention about the amendment this is for term only and so very appreciative my family is as well that we get to continue to live and work here in Trussville. >> So We need a motion >> Motion. >> We need a motion to have a motion to adopt. >> So moved. >> Have a second. >> Second. >> All in favor say I. >> I.

>> Any opposed? Hearing none, motion carries. >> Just just a way of explanation of what we're what we're doing is that we are we're increasing Dr. Martin's term by by a year. >> Yes. >> We're elevating it from the three years to four years. >> Yes. >> And it will automatically renew. Um he did not despite what we we wanted to give him some extra money this year, he declined. Instead elected to go with additional terms. >> Yes. And I appreciate that. Tyson and Trey did have something they wanted to say about that just in terms of the additional compensation. I told them we're going to go with the one year of term. So I appreciate that. Yeah. So >> That was I I I've kind of been Tyson and Trey I think on that

but we're grateful that you're content with [snorts] the term. >> Thank you. And then action item number four we have a lane frog salaries study schedule or salary schedule study and as I mentioned with the first action item we have hired a third party to come in and evaluate all of our salary schedules. They we Mr. Kirkland and I conducted this study that's been two years ago and brought that for a recommendation before the board of education. We identify eight peers across the Birmingham area and then also the state and do a crosswalk between all of our schedules and their schedules. Part of making sure that we continue to be the highest system in the state for retention is making sure that our schedules are competitive and so this practice will help us to continue

to do so. So. >> Very good. Need a motion for this, please. >> And we need a motion to adopt the study. Do I have a motion? >> Move to adopt. >> I'll second. >> Second. >> All in favor, say I. >> I. >> Hearing any any none No. Okay, hearing none, motion carries. Very good. And uh I believe now Mr. Walker. >> teams placed in the top four. So, out of our 25 sports, 10 of our 25 sports, or 40%, came in the top four, which I think was a a great accomplishment for them. Uh one of the most exciting things to me this year is uh we were able to see some things that we've never seen before or haven't seen in a long time. Uh we had a team reach the final

four for the first time in school history. Had another team go to the final four for the first time since 1991. Uh we told all the kids on the team, "Hey, the last time we did this, none of y'all were even alive." They kind of thought that was funny. And another team made the playoffs for the first time since 7A existed. So, uh the very talented Chad Summers put a recap video together for us. So, Dwayne, if you want to play that, we'll watch this, and then I have a couple other things to share. >> Hey, Dwayne, before you hit play, Lance, you were at what, 98% of those 1,000 events? Is that right? >> I think so. >> From state championship runs to historical performances, it was a great year to be a Husky.

Let's take a look at the highlights. >> [music] [music] >> The girls cross country team finished third at state. This is their fourth time in the last 6 years to finish in the top four. The boys cross country team finished fourth at state. Their third straight year to finish in the top four. >> [music] >> The football team qualified for the playoffs for the 11th time in the last 12 years. >> [music] >> They were also ranked number one in the state during the season for the first time in school history. >> [music] >> The girls flag football team made the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season. >> [music] >> And the volleyball team made the final four for the first time in school history. 058playoffs for the first time since 2010. The eighth grade boys basketball team won the metro championship. Hewitt-Trussville head basketball coach Jeremy Monceaux won his 200th career game during the season. >> [music] >> The boys bowling team qualified for regionals for the eighth consecutive year. >> [music] >> The girls bowling team qualified for regionals for the fifth consecutive year. >> [music] >> The boys indoor track and field team won the state championship. The middle school cheer team won the large school division state title. Merritt Daniel placed second overall in the 7A girls' golf state tournament. The boys' soccer team made the final four for the first time since 1991. >> [music] >> This was their first playoff win since 2014. The girls' soccer team made the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Their first playoff appearance >> [music] >> in class 7A. The boys' outdoor track and field team placed second at state. This was the 26th state runner-up finish in school history. >> [music] >> The individual state winners were George Merchant and Devin Cole and V. The girls' outdoor track and field team placed third at

state. Individual state title winners were Catherine Kithome and Sarah Thomas. >> [music] >> The softball team won the state championship with two wins over Thompson in the finals. This was their fifth state title in program history and the 22nd overall state title in school history. They have now won five state titles since 2019 and have played in the championship game six times in that span. The baseball team won the state championship as well. This was their second state title in program history and the 23rd overall state title for the school. This season was the last season for class 7A. >> [music] >> Class 7A was in place for 12 years and in that time the Huskies won 11 state titles and had 15 state runner-up finishes with 26 total bats. Both coaches Taylor Burt and

Jeff Malden were honored as 7A coaches of the year in their respective sports of softball and baseball. And finally, as we head into the 2026-2027 athletic year, a trio of new head coaches will be in place in flag football, tennis, [music] and cheer. >> How about those Huskies? To have success, you have to have a great team and we have a great team here in Trussville. Special thanks to our Board of Education, Superintendent Dr. Martin, school principals, [music] our athletic foundation and its supporters, as well as the city of Trussville. The Huskies are already hard at work preparing for next season [music] and we will see you in August. Until then, go Huskies. >> putting that together. Uh you know, another thing that Dr. Martin talked about >> is the Husky experience and and what

that means and when I look back on this year, there were some really great moments uh from, you know, football games with, you know, insane crowds, whether it was home or away, volleyball hosting the area tournament in front of all of our students in a packed out arena, uh big wins in area basketball, uh the soccer team hosting the semi-finals. I've never seen that many people at a soccer game in my life. I mean, it looked like the World Cup in Atlanta or something out there. Uh and then you heard um Taylor and Jeff both talk about the fan support uh for softball and baseball. So, that's that's a huge part of it. Um you know, we want to create memories and moments for these kids and and I as I look back on this

year, uh there were a lot of those. I also want to mention um one thing that kind of uh have seen throughout the year. You know, today is Ms. Dobbs' birthday. So, uh if any of you want to uh talk with Ms. Dobbs, I had a chance to talk with her today and wish her a happy birthday and uh thinking about Coach Dobbs um and all the messages and things that people have said, um you know, thousands of messages, not one time have I heard anybody say, "Hey coach, remember that time we won this trophy? Remember that time we won this meet?" Every single message is about, "Hey, this is where you helped me as a person. You know, I'm not the man or woman I am today without going through your program." And those

are things that are hard to put in a video, uh but those are things that I see every day from our coaches. Um and I'm just uh I'm really thankful. Uh we have a lot of great people here. Um and I see kind of first hand what they pour into our kids, which is um bigger than any of the the numbers that you see on the screen here. So, um you know, this is probably the last time we're talking about this past year. Uh you know, we we're very proud of all that was accomplished, but we're not satisfied and you know, as of 2 weeks ago, we started most of our team started working out and moving forward. We have new teams, new players on the teams. They're coming from middle school, new kids coming

into seventh grade. They'll play on teams for the first time. So, um you know, what we have to do is do our best and uh give all them a a great experience next year as well. So, uh 8 weeks from Friday night is Husky Night, which kind of kicks off the year and it'll be here before we know it. So, but like I said in the video, it's a true team effort from the board, Dr. Martin, our school principals, the city of Trussville. It takes everyone to come together and be pulling in the same direction to to have those things happen. So, I appreciate it very much. >> Very good. Thank you, Lance. We appreciate this very much, Coach Walker. We do not have anyone signed up to participate in public comments. >> Can I

Can I say something just real quick? Cuz, you know, Coach Walker talks a lot about the um um the programs and the students and I've started my fourth year and I can say this, I've never once heard Lance Walker talk about Lance Walker. So, I think it goes without saying that, you know, I I love this because our principals get a chance to really highlight their schools throughout the year, their programs and I enjoy sitting here and listening because they talk about their schools like a proud parent. And as I listen to Lance, I hear him talk about athletics as a proud parent and he's also an alumni. So, I have no doubt Lance could have gone on and done things at the Division 1 level. He was headed that way. I think Coach Saban

is still upset with him and won't speak to him. But with that said, what he decided to do was come home. And I love June because it's a chance for Lance to talk about his program and it is. It's his athletic program. He supports his coaches. He supports his athletes and that's why we have the success that we do. So, I think we need to give Lance Walker a ROUND OF APPLAUSE. >> [applause] >> JUST ONE COMMENT, A reminder this Sunday at 1:00 on Alabama Public TV is Varsity Extra. This is a highlight some of the high schools in the area and one of the segments is going to be our electrical construction that coach George Logan. So, if you have an opportunity, we had uh Sher Harmon presented uh had her comment I had

her segment on a couple of weeks ago. But, just to give that pass that along to you. Do I have a uh rec- >> We have a reception too for our retirees. >> Reception for our retirees. Make sure you stick around. We want to say thank you again for all of what you've done for us. Do I have a motion to adjourn? >> So moved. >> All in favor, please stand. Thank you for being
