good meeting um I attended both of our lunches and I will say it it was it's really inspiring to hear from our students directly what they're doing in the school and how they are growing they are amazing students and we're doing amazing things with them um Maricopa Friends of the Arts fundraiser uh that was that was fun um to see our are highlighting our student artists that were there that night uh we have such talented kids I was able to attend um the El and gifted night at Santa Cruz Elementary I learned so much about what they're doing um for both the English um the E program and how they're pulling them out and how they're educating them and how they're incorporating the families in it and as well as with the gifted and it
was just really nice and uh very eye openening and I love learning new things about what we're doing for our students I took part of the transportation tour that's always fun um and it's great that it's National bus safety week uh but it's not just the bus drivers I have to give kudos to our mechanics uh our uh what is it the the route Specialists uh this dis patch the office workers all of them work together as a team to make sure that we get the kids to and from school and their activities safely uh attended the chamber breakfast uh that's always fun been to numerous athletic events including homecoming game um spent a lot of hours in the concession stand as well so if any of you really want to have a lot of
fun the concession stands where to be on the high school and then you know um a lot of my fellow board members uh thank the staff uh for all of their hard efforts and uh what they did to make sure that we got payroll out during break um and I just wanted to you know jump on the bandwagon with them because without the dedication of our staff um to make sure that everybody got paid everybody got a check um was outstanding and I really do appreciate all of their efforts thank you thank you m c member no thank you president Downey I was able to attend both the lunch that the district put on for the community leaders and the business partners and those were great events as uh member C tray just mentioned and
I was also able to attend the chamber breakfast with the Department of Transportation director who came and uh spoke to the chamber members and guests about the in importance of Transportation in the state and where we are and it was a really phenomenal presentation a lot of really good information and they also noted that there will be an overpass on rigs but it's it's going to take a while because all Transportation projects do but it's all funded and I think it was like 2026 or something like that um but that's exciting you know that'll be here before we know it and I was able to to attend the Puma bees uh first quarter Awards assembly and that's always a lot of fun and finally I was able to participate in the Wild West music fest
in the 20th anniversary celebration for the city of Maricopa and I think that the city did a great job putting on that event it was very well organized and um familyfriendly and just a lot of fun and I just want to thank the city for bringing that here and that's all I have thank you member nor member Anderson thank you president Downey uh Transportation tour was phenomenal and you know I have to comment that their shop is so clean compared to like my farm shop it's like wow this this is what a clean shop looks like so Kudos and it's amazing um teamwork that everybody in the transportation department and M maintenance department all comes together but it was great to see everything that they need to go through to keep those buses um safe
um make sure they're ready for inspection you know make sure that everything works they're constantly checking everything so I appreciate everything they do to get our students to and from locations especially when it's those long um athletic overnighter sometimes and field trips they do a great job so thank you and I I they just I'm just I was in awe impressed um homecoming was a lot of fun uh as an alumni to be able to go and my husband and I were able to participate in the band's uh show and you know I have to comment on what Mrs no said last week um the band performance this year is the best and I don't even think you did Justice but seeing it was phenomenal I mean I don't know who wrote it but the
production was so well done so if you have not had an opportunity to go to their halftime show please do it it's based on building Maricopa from 20 years years and they've got some pictures and they kind of go into some history but it was just so I was impressed with the amount of talent that we have um and I know you know Mr poor and his team do a lot for our students but I was you know I I was in awe um and then of course alumni cheerleaders had to hang out with them for a little bit so it was just fun to see some some alumni and kind of get together and reminisce what it was like you know more more than 20 years ago that's all I'm going to say um
and then uh as you know this is a domestic violence awareness month and so there is a 24-hour crisis line that you can call if there's any that's a live person that you talk to and that number is 520 0858 and there is a live person that will answer the phone and kind of help you uh walk through the process or just someone to talk to to so please take that opportunity you don't need to struggle Alone um there's somebody out there and there's Services out there available Saturday we will be out um with several of the other social services um agencies that serve our City Saturday we'll be at the community center from 99 to 11 and that Community Center is it's probably fairly new for some of you but it's in the old
library which is on Porter and Smith in and so we'll be there with um just information answer questions um whatever as you need so hopefully we'll come out um and see you and then uh Wild West Festival I have to say I was a little hesitant with the amount of traffic that we already have on 347 going through our city but as I commented to Chief Goodman phenomenal job with directing traffic um even going to homecoming I thought it was going to be crazy but it was smooth sailing all three days um I was out there Sunday and had the opportunity to um um have brunched with all the former mayors and councel from 20 years ago and it was just very very um heartwarming to see how far we've come from being part of
the incorporation committee to now being a city that is still in if it's infancy you know 20 years really isn't that old um but it was just a lot of fun again to reminisce and just kind of see um How Far We've Come and where we started so it's I look forward to seeing what the Next Generation is going to do with our city and so I'm so happy that our students are here because really it's in your court now um and I we're in good hands so that was I just wanted to make a comment on that that it was fun to to um take a walk down memory lane so thank you president Downey thank you M Anderson um I attended the business partner lunch and did the um tour of the transportation
department I mean I agree with everything that was said on all that it's that a little bit of facts we've actually got 60 buses and something like 15 vans that are in part of our Transportation um we do over 330 routes every day so um busing something like 300 sorry 3,300 students every day to and from school and is alluded to other events I mean it's a big operation and it looks so good it's pretty impressive so I just um recognize that team um and that's all I have for that now we'll move on to I I got one call to the public so I have to read this members of the board may not discuss items that are not specific identified on the agenda therefore pursuant to ARS 3843 1.01 actions taken as a

books all boys are not blue and gender queer um now he was addressing the schools of the United States not the libraries but I have checked these books out at our city library my question to you is do we have this in our school district these two books and I'm also interested in uh knowing what the assigned reading is for our children and that's what I have so when can I get an answer to this or may I meet with someone about this so all we can all we can officially do in in this meeting is I just request Dr lman to follow up we can't make any comments on anything that isn't on the agenda so appreciate your input and um I'm pretty sure Dr lman or someone from her team will follow up

celebrate me encouraging confidence in students held was held at Maricopa High School in collaboration with Maricopa High School impact joined their open house to share with families the services they offer be awesome has begun tabling at Desert Sunrise high school during lunches to share about substance use and abuse Horizon Health and Wellness has begun supporting both desert sunrise and Maricopa High School by assigning a youth engagement specialist that is on campus each week to provide Crisis Support to students behavior coaching as well as running groups on substance education and anger management with this additional support these two schools no longer need to wait for crisis to come out when there is a mental health crisis the youth engagement specialist is able to assess the need and work with the family to provide resources nine of
our Mental Health Counselors are now receiving clinical supervision from Northern Lights of those seven are working towards independent lure through the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health many counselors attended their meet meet the teacher night at their School site to share with families about school-based counseling and their role as a school counselor in August we held our first meeting for the mental health task force participants included School staff faith-based partner ERS Community agencies and parents the group has decided to work towards bullying prevention increasing parental involvement addressing substance abuse and use Mental Health and resourcing our counselors participated in Kids Day handing out calming tools positive messages and hosting a sensory station mayor Copa Wells Middle School participated in hello week as an Initiative for their aware School level team they encourage students to grab a
treat and give it to someone else and say hello the counseling team has decided to send out a monthly newsletter to share current events and mental health related content with staff and families last month's newsletter shared information on why suicide prevention is important as well as a student graphic on social emotional well-being of students and Educators developed by MHS student Ace Treadway this month schools will be participating in Red Ribbon Week in collaboration with the DEA be awesome impact Laona Northern Lights Maricopa Police Department and other community agencies to discuss substance use and abuse Dr Samantha Reeves from the University of Maryland school of medicine spent two days with musd the first day she facilitated a training with the elementary middle and high school counselors where she discussed PL planning documents specifically created for musd
and admin on planning tiered services and aligning with PBIS the counselors were given a chance to work on their planning documents and identify roles responsibilities sample activities and time commitment she then met with leadership to discuss the findings of her school visits from March how school counselors can support the implementation of PBIS and how the district can further support the school counseling program project the work continues to partner with the human res resources department to provide subscriptions to all staff to the Comm app staff are able to sign up to four dependents under their account and they have access to a variety of content such as guided movement mindfulness music sleep stories and more we are at 70% engagement rate of those who are signed up on the app project aware has also partnered with
human resources to promote a signup challenge eight winners were chosen to receive a self-care basket sponsored by project aware One winner shared that she has been able to use calm in her classroom with her students to help create a more calming environment we have offered a variety of trainings to staff and have had the opportunity to offer additional training to students seag training was offered to new hires and those staff who were unable to attend when it was initially offered an attempt to have 100% of all counselors and admin trained 62 staff were trained in tiered levels of counseling support by Dr Samantha Reeves this included leadership and counselors one of our middle school counselors Becky horn developed a training for the health office staff going over our crisis procedures ran Health facilitated an art
therapy experience where counselors and a few teachers attended in partnership with impact lafrontera and MHS counselor Hade Carr the football team participated in a training on bullying hazing and the negative effects of both ESS has trained over 100 staff in Crisis Prevention training learning deescalation techniques we will continue to offer additional training to our staff students and families in the future these are the counseling consent numbers for the month of August and September in September we lost the week due to fall break those students who were triage before the break are anticipated to receive services this month our next steps include continued work with Community agencies in November we will be partnering with be awesome to discuss bullying and the impacts on the mental health of children our work will continue with the mental health
awareness task force the counselors will continue to work on developing BH works as a pilot site for the Arizona Department of Education sorry here we go um and we will continue to work towards 100% of secondary staff and freshmen receiving QPR suicide prevention training in December we will be work offering a workshop on school Crisis Prevention and intervention in partnership with AB thank you so much bird and that concludes our presentation open up to any questions your feedback I have a couple um I'll go after Patty okay so first thank you um what a great presentation it's it's really nice to see all the professional development and all the Outreach that um this project this grant is is working on and the agencies that we're working with too it's great because we don't have to
do it alone there's plenty of outside agencies that we can partner with um regarding the Outreach and engagement I know that last year when I and I attended a couple getting the families and the parents and the people that really need to hear the message was difficult is that getting better with what you've done so far this year or what is the what is the plan going forward to try to engage more parents and famili I know that's been a focus of uh the mental health task force and brainstorming that that group has done and that involves a lot of um stakeholders and so we have many of the Community Based agencies what would you say Miss bird our mental health task force is well over 20 people and we're about to meet in a
couple of weeks okay so we'll continue to focus on that because together we're really able to brainstorm what are the best strategies for bringing in more people um best time best location best hook all of that yeah okay I I think it would be kind of because what you offer is all these resources that are are out there that we're trying to get to these families you know maybe piggybacking on some of their already existing events like their fall festivals or their math night just something that that you know that the families are already going to be attending and giving them that option and giving them the resources that they may not know that they need so we do have our school level aware teams and so one part of the team is to come
up with an engagement strategy and so that's one thing we've asked as them to participate in things like back to school night math night um and just making sure you're having a presence on campus so awesome thank you so much are you sure okay okay uh thank you I appreciate all you're doing in our schools I think this is an amazing Endeavor and I know it's been years in the making and it just continues to get better and it's just so important uh for our students and their wellbeing and the families that we serve so I really want to thank you for all of that I have a question about you said the football team received the bullying and harassment training which that's amazing I hope that continues was it both desert sunrise and Maricopa
high school or just I'm it was a Maricopa High School initiative um to bring in the agency was impact Offa for that's awesome and I and hopefully we can expand that to Desert Sunrise I think that is integral for our Sports and our team members to have that information and sometimes you know they just need to be taught what's what's right and what's wrong and how it impacts people and so I would love to see that expanded to Desert Sunrise as well thank you for that so congratulations on the mental health award I think that that is incredible we've come a long way um and I want to thank staff because I know the board has been talking about our concerns with the mental health of our students for a couple years so thank you
for taking this on and kind of leading the charge um when we brought it to the attention because we can we know what we can see what's happening in our community so thank you um I know that we've come a long way in what year and a half almost two years right September of 2021 yeah um and it looks like you've got a great plan for expanding it and going forward uh couple couple questions um on the Calm app that I know that we all get information from staff uh from the the district office is that available to students and are students encouraged to even sign up for it because I know it's free isn't it I just wonder if it's beeno if students have been approached because it's a nice way to kind of
click on when you're having a freakout moment so it's just available for staff right now and then staff can sign up to for dependent so their children or any other family members they want is there any plans to expand that to students it's something to look at it is it is a cost that is covered from our project aware budget and so I don't know that we've cost out um what it would be to cover all students just I just I just think it's a nice because sometimes they're afraid to go to person but if they can their phones are like connected to their hands permanently so it's just an option for those that want to so thank you and then I noticed on your slide that only 176 staff members had been trained in
The non- Crisis Prevention why and is there a plan to expand that because we've got like a thousand staff member we've got a you know we have a lot of employees so why only 176 is my question the exceptional student services has done a wonderful job in targeting our um staff that really need that training the training comes in two parts and so that number you saw on the slide actually has those that attended part one which focuses on deescalation which is exactly the part that um would be beneficial for everyone and then there's a part too um that is more beneficial for security guards for our self-contained um as students May escalate through behaviors there are additional strategies that they may need and they advise us not to overly train all staff in part
two but part one is something that we are working on expanding and offering to more staff members those deescalation techniques help not only staff in um working with students but even adults that might be upset in the front office or what have you they're just great strategies and so thank you than you for highlighting that and we will continue to promote um getting more staff trained in that awesome that's what I did thank you I'm I'm impressed and I think that we need a hello week like that idea I just uh I mean just say dto to everything has been said well done it's really um you should be congratulated on the effort the time it's been put in here and I'm hoping the the students and the parents and the families um see what
we're trying to do here and this crisis of mental health specifically obviously here in the schools um I just want to highlight as well you haven't specific called it out but just want to highlight for others that may be listening and interested in that as part of this process um teachers and all that participate actually get clinical certification out of it and they certainly get um educational and professional support um so I just want to highlight that component is not specifically for the students but it'll help us hopefully to attract people um more people as we always need more people in this area unfortunately sorry unfortunately we also need a lot of people in this area so well done congratulations thank you you okay we I move on to item seven consent agenda motion to
approve as written second Lisa we have a motion second Patty krae I adamary no I Tory Anderson I Robert Downey I so mooved we now move on to item eight action items specifically it a discussion and possible approval of the pro Personnel schedule Mr backet thank you president Downey members of the governing board Dr lman I have the Personnel schedule in front of you this evening I'll take any questions Mr Becket I just I don't have any questions but it is an observation sure did notice a lot of resignations with custodians um and I also saw a lot of new hires so are we replacing them or is this are we really down that many custodians i' have to check the exact number but we've had some churn yes okay all right I believe we
still have signs up at most of our school sites recruiting for custodians as well this is an ongoing need for the district what's the what's the starting wage for that I'd have to look okay I'll get back to you the top of my hand it's probably close to 16 I just okay all thank you you're welcome nobody else has any questions on motion to approve the schedule I'll second Lisa we have a motion a second Patty crae I adamary no I Tory Anderson I Robert Downey I so mov we now move on to item 8 B discussion and possible approval of the award of the above the threshold purchase amount to unot Winslow under 1 GPA contract p209 Dr Lan so as you can see this is an above the threshold uh contract and it's
important to know that um as we now navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with growth it's important to um think about the moment that we're in we just we are concluding an effective five-year strategic plan and we're launching another five-year strategic plan and uh certainly with the future in mind and the explosive growth that continues um Capital Master planning is going to be really important um this these services will integrate the Strategic plan that we're going to recraft um concepts related to portrait of a graduate um with the physical spaces classroom spaces cafeterias multi-purpose rooms hallways all of the all of the spaces that we have to consider as we grow but yet we Face limitations in funding so we it's time is of the Essence like it's it's perfect timing to be creative
and res and resourceful so I know you looked at the the specs there but orcat Winslow will facilitate uh visioning events with staff students and parents um in which they'll think about their school our larger strategic plan um and the educational programming so that we can maximize the physical space um and serve our the vision the hopes and dreams in our strategic plan that's the U motivation behind these Services one question that just popped into my H with this um plan that they're going to give us is this also include like the capital expenditures for like repairs the equipment as it goes down the school the school parts that aren't covered that would raised by bonds yes um I don't I don't I can't say specifically about equipment unless it's things like lighting and HVAC
that kind of you know large Capital expenses the last time we did a capital plan was five years ago um and we're ready to review those real literally nuts and bolts kinds of things along with the creative visioning um and redefined use of the space that's a great question thank you so Dr Lan the the ow team is is going to meet with each school team correct and it's going to be made up of staffs and parents correct exactly to that school will have their own kind of idea have their own opportunity to express their creativity and their desires and then that's again that's filtered through the limitations that we have so yes each school will have that event and then there's layers of service that um occur after those visioning events okay got it
thank you if there's no other discussion I make a motion we approve the above threshold contract for um or cut Winslow second L we have a motion a second Patty krae I Adam RoR I Tory Anderson I Robert Downey I so moved we now move on to item it B discussion and possible approval oh sorry I move on to actually three items yeah so these are three procedural changes are actually new procedures uh they all have the same basic theme need background so I'm going to read the background excuse me for the first one and it'll apply for the next two as well if you've looked at the actual um uh actual um policies so this is for the first one JK the proposed new policy JK student discipline reflects the changes in legislation ARS
05315841 G states that expulsion is required due to students procession of a firearm at school each B 2460 amends ARS 15843 to state that a k to four kindergarten of fourth grader student may be suspended if the suspension does not exceed School two school days and the aggate number of suspensions in a school year does not exceed 10 school days in a school year so as I say this paragraph is the reason for the three new um procedures so um but we have to vote in each one individually so any comments questions Miss Pastor is here to speak any specifics that may you may have the only the only clarification I want to make sure is so each First Defense of a firearm is an expulsion and it's now applicable to our elementary students basically
that's the change because before the legislature said you can't touch elementary students regardless so now this is now recrating the discipline so that we can think about safety correct the rule applies to K4 students got it okay okay that's on you thank you if there's no other questions I'll motion to approve I'll second Lisa have a motion to Second p kre i Adam RoR I Tory Anderson I Robert Downey I so move we now move on to it D discussion of possible approval first reading of the policy JKD student suspension motion to approve I'll second the have a motion to second py kraay I adamary no I Tory Anderson I Robert Downey I so moved we now move on to it e discussion and possible approval of the first reading of policy jke expulsion of
