Hello Roosevelt family. I'm Dr. Danny Portio, superintendent of the Roosevelt School District here in beautiful South Phoenix. And I'm Dr. Ashley Hajj, president of the Roosevelt Governing Board. Thank you for joining us for our recap of our first governing board meeting of 2026. We hope you enjoyed a joyful and well-deserved holiday season with your loved ones. We began the meeting with the election of our new board officers and we are pleased to share that Dr. Ashley Hodgej will serve as our board president again and Miss Victoria Castro Corral will serve as our new vice president. >> As board president, I lead and facilitate our meetings, work closely with the superintendent to set agendas, help keep discussions focused and centered on student outcomes, and oversee the board's calendar, goals, policies, and evaluation. The vice president steps
in when the president is unavailable, supports the consistent use of student outcome focused governance framework by monitoring meeting times and questions, and assist with meeting preparation and other assigned responsibilities. We would also like to take a moment to thank our entire governing board for their dedication and service. January is National School Board Recognition Month, and we are grateful for the leadership, commitment, and dedication our board members show to our students, staff, and community. We also reviewed our mid-year academic check. While we are seeing gradual progress in reading and math, and our long-term trends are moving in the right direction, we recognize that we are not yet on pace to meet our 2628 proficiency goals. Districtwide, proficiency currently sits at about 22% in both STAR reading and star math with particular concern for our English learners
and our students with exceptional needs and middle school math. In response, the district is intensifying efforts in the second semester through priority reading plans, stronger curriculum alignment, weekly datadriven professional learning team meetings, targeted small group tutoring and key grade levels, and strengthening implementation of our multi-ter system of support to accelerate learning and close gaps. We also gave an update on superintendent guard number five, which is focused on English learner success, the success of our special education students and our African-American students. The district has built a comprehensive system to monitor English learner progress using tools such as star DNA aella practice tests and educ. This data is reviewed regularly through principal meetings, leadership team meetings and coaching cycles to ensure we are working to create systems for timely support and intervention. Additionally, the district completed an
external study of English acquisition services, including site visits, surveys, interviews, and data analysis to strengthen instructional practices, adult supports, leadership system, and family engagement. All ATSI and CSI schools are implementing integrated action plans with clear goals, evidence-based strategies, and quarterly progress monitoring to support target student groups. Finally, we reviewed our reinventing RSD update which highlights continued progress on district transformation. Bondf funed rebuilds are underway or in planning at Sunland, Irene Lopez and Cesar Chavez and playground replacement projects are moving forward at Julian Kennedy Greenfield Southwest and Pastor. Also, updates on the future of Bush campus was given which is currently in its planning and design phase. The vision for the new Bush School includes science of reading aligned literacy, interdisciplinary project-based learning, team-based staffing, and partnership with ASU, and continue community engagement through advisory sessions
and family input. And lastly, we are continuing our district-wide enrollment and marketing efforts, which highlight STEM and STEAM, strong academics and teachers, safe and caring schools, and family engagement. Currently, enrollment stands at 7,038 students as of January 6, 2026. Enrollment for next school year is open now, and we invite current and potential families to attend our showcase at each of our schools on February 4th from 5 to 7. It is important for current families to reenroll so that we can plan each school's budget and number of teachers and staff that we need to hire per grade level. This also helps us to pre-plan for other logistics such as bus routes. Thank you for your continued partnership, trust, and support as we work together to create better futures for every child in South Phoenix. >> And
remember, together we are the genesis of change.
