Hello, I'm Dr. Danny Portillo, the superintendent of the Roosevelt School District here in our beloved South Phoenix. >> And I am Dr. Ashley Haj, the governing board president. And here is a recap of our governing board meeting from October 14th. >> This month, we are proud to celebrate our Roosevelt principles in honor of National Principles Month. >> Their leadership, dedication, and passion have the power to drive the success of our schools and the achievement of every single student. Principles lead with heart. Their role is building relationships, inspiring their teams, and creating school environments where students feel safe, supported, and encouraged to dream big. We are grateful for their work, their commitment to excellence, and their unwavering belief in the power of education to transform lives. Happy National Principles Month to our entire Roosevelt leadership team.
As we celebrate our leaders, we also want to share how Roosevelt continues to focus on pushing for academic progress, especially in mathematics. Our goal number two focuses on fifth grade math proficiency. Though modest improvements is showing in our student performance in order for us to achieve our 2028 goal of 45%, we must stay strong and focus on implementing systems and instructional improvement initiatives >> to accelerate our student performance growth. We must all commit to aligning our curriculum pacing, improving tier 1 instruction, and strengthening intervention blocks while providing consistent instructional coaching. At the middle school level, goal for aims to raise 8th grade math proficiency. Congratulations to TG Bar and Sunland for showing encouraging gains. We are also doubling down on algebra 1 readiness, datadriven instruction, and professional learning for teachers. We're making strong progress on
superintendent guardrail number four. Our commitment to retain and develop highquality teachers right here in our community. Our grow your own teacher pipeline is taking shape through partnership with South Mountain Community College, Rio Salado, and Arizona teacher registered apprentice program. We're collaborating with All-In Education, the Arizona K12 Center, and American Intercontinental University to offer training and affordable degree options for our talented staff and community through the initiatives like paraprofessional testing, local job fairs, and student teacher placements. Roosevelt is building a sustainable teacher pipeline from our community for our community. Another exciting update is the progress of our reinventing Roosevelt initiative focused on modernizing facilities, improving transportation, improving our HVAC systems, and repurposing properties. At Silent Steam Academy, the new sports field and safer gym flooring are nearly complete. New playgrounds are coming to Julian Kennedy, Greenfield,
and while Bernard Black and Clovis Campbell are receiving restroom and fire system upgrades. Our HVAC preventative maintenance program was approved by the board and bond funded projects like the rebuild of Chaveis and Lopez elementaryaries are moving forward with architect selections expected in December. And for transportation, we have improved our routes and our communication to parents. >> We're proud that Roosevelt continues to demonstrate a focus on ensuring strong fiscal stewardship and transparency with taxpayer dollars. We are grateful to the community for approving the bonds and overrights in South Phoenix. Of the 90 million bond approved by voters in 2020, more than 76 million has already been invested improving ADA access, creating nextgen learning spaces, upgrading technology, and renewing our bus suite. Our maintenance and operations override renewed in 2021 has helped reduce our district average class
size by more than 20% in grades kindergarten through 8th grade and ensures full day kindergarten for every child. The district's additional assistant override continues to fund classroom furniture, technology upgrades, and innovative instructional tools keeping our campuses safe, modern, and student centered. Our latest annual financial report shows that Roosevelt allocated 67.7% of all expenditures for classroom related activities with 44.4% directly supporting instruction. This exceeds state benchmarks. That's fiscal responsibility and action. Invest in where it matters most, our students and our classrooms. As we celebrate our principles, staff, and students, we thank our community for your continued trust and support. Together, we're shaping the future of South Phoenix, one student, one classroom, and one school at a time. >> We are Roosevelt. We are the genesis of change.
