Okay. It makes >> that >> again. Just funny because it was from the far Yes. >> They put it on the balance >> and they uh >> Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Uh, the Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District number 35 governing board calls this meeting to order on May the 12th, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. in the governing boardroom, district office 570 Camino Leto Galindo, Rio Rico, Arizona. Can we please stand for the pledge? Mr. Guerrero, will you please lead us to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for it stands one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >> I know. Roll call. Uh, Miss Alma de Laiva, Mr. um Brad, >> uh, Mr. Mr. Rene Ramirez >> here. Um, Mr. Ben Guerrero >> here >>
and me lord Vasquez. We have a quorum. Uh, adoption of the agenda. >> No recommended changes. Thank you. >> So, we don't need a motion. All right. Yes. Okay. Do we do I have a motion? >> Motion to approve the agenda as presented. >> Second. >> All those in favor say I. >> I. >> All those opposed? Nay. Eyes have it. Motion passes. Is there a call to the public? Okay. No call to the public. Uh presentations. Uh Rio Rico High School student recognition. Mr. Verduba. >> Thank you. Uh tonight we have quite a few uh recognitions beginning with student recognition. First I'd like to invite Mr. Lopez to come up. Um we were very proud to have one of our students Lopez for being selected state board of education student of the month. Uh,
so she was nominated by her future miss being 10. Um, so I'm going to go ahead and turn over to Mr. Lopez, but I don't think he knows the student very well. >> I don't. Madam President, members of the board, Mr. Redu, Dr. Londville, it's my pleasure to be up here. I indeed do not know the student very well. Um, it actually makes a little bit more difficult to present this. So, Alina Lopez, um, give you a little background of the ASBA student of the month, Arizona State Board Association. Um so they started this back in 232 24. So the Arizona State Board of Education they launched a student of the month program and the purpose of it was to really to recognize outstanding students from across Arizona. Um some of the parameters that they
listed is um the nominations come from they can come from teachers, they can come from administrators. In this case it came from one of our teachers an physiology teacher Miss Lutan who has Alina in her class. Um the board opens the nominations during which educators, administrators and others, adults can submit their recommendations. Um and they come from any kind of school. Could be a public school. It could be a charter school. It could be a private school. It's really very um wide nets that they want to cast. And some of the categories that they recommend the nominations to fall under are personal qualities, character, achievements, academics, STEM, steam, arts, sports, extracurricular, community, school impact, civic engagement, commerce, business. So very very broad in terms of the areas that they they want to encourage all those
individuals to recommend. Um, our very own Alina Lopez was recognized as one of the two April ASBA students of the month and she actually had a chance to go up to during the regular meeting um, on their April 27th meeting and she had a chance to be recognized as well as she had a chance to speak before the board and I asked her how nervous she was. She said, "Well, I was good. I was prepared and she did ask me if she had to speak today." I said, "You may nervous. I'm a little more nervous today because I'm not as prepared." Um but I do feel it's important for Miss Tan to also recognize um her taking on and making this extra step going above and beyond to nominate one of her students and having
her an opportunity to share why she felt that it made sense and in her eyes that Alina was worthy of this recognition. So like to Miss Tan to share perspective. He's also very excited. Um, good afternoon. My name is Ping Dan and I'm an international teacher from from the Philippines. I'm currently teaching at the Rico High School. I wish to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to speak before you because I never get a chance before but uh to personally thank you for this moment. I have a solemn commitment to myself to do my best every day in my work and for for if I were not to give my heart fully to everything I do, I could not be rightfully define who I am. And speaking of doing one's best, it is my
honor to share that Alina was named as one of April's students of the month by the Arizona Board of Education. I nominated Alina. I nominated Alina because she consistently goes beyond what is expected of her. She understands her priorities, sets a higher high standard for herself, demonstrates academic dedication, exhibits excellent manners, and maintains a well-rounded uh life outside the school through her involvement in sports. I firmly believe that building such character takes time and she truly embodies the portrait of a graduated artist. I hold her in high regard. So I told myself, let's give it a try. And I I really I really admire her for everything. And here it comes the opportunity to be recognized not only within the classroom but also across the state of Arizona. As the saying goes, we only need
one person to give us a break. And it's her turn. Her turn has come. Alina may already may may Alina may already be aware of the significance of this recognition, but what matters even more is that she has represented SCV35 before the entire state of Arizona. You truly deserve this, please. >> Um the mic for Alina too. She's so highlight um in addition to that that Miss Tan, you know, put together so beautifully. Um there's a couple things that I found very um it's important to highlight during the time that he had she had the opportunity to speak before the ASBA board. She mentioned in her um the portion where she spoke to the board, she mentioned success is not measured by accomplishments but by the impact you have on others. And then secondly, she
also mentioned I want to follow a career path which allows me to have positive impact on society and others and contribute to something bigger than myself and inspire others the way others have inspired me. So I can tell you as your principal but also as your uncle as your Nino and in many ways you've already accomplished that Alina not only in our family but also at Rico High School. I'm so proud of you and very deserving. All right to the board if you guys would like any questions. Alina, here's your chance. congratulations. Uh being uh recognized by the Arizona State Board of Education is by the AS what is it as you're correct >> yes is something to be commended for. Um it I believe it speaks very highly of your hard work ethic, your
commitment and your dedication to um excellence and inside and outside the classroom. So uh for that congratulations and thank you for representing uh Rio Rico High School with >> Thank you so much. >> Okay, I'll go ahead and let you speak and then I'll go. Um, what would you like me to speak about? >> You walked up to the mic. I figured you were gonna say something. >> Pressure. I just wanted to first thank Miss Tan for giving this amazing opportunity to be able to shine and to be nominating nominated for this tremendous award and also my school parents for always giving me that support and allowing me to actually achieve all these great things I'm doing and um my school for always supporting me and always giving me uh so many opportunities to excel
in not only academically but also both socially and in sport. So, thank you guys. >> She got you, Mr. Beach. >> Yeah, that was pretty good for >> uh Miss Tan, thank you for uh nominating Alina. I know a lot of times teachers will get these nomination forms on their computer and there's three pages long and you push delete. So, I appreciate you taking the time uh nominating Alina. Alina, you have a great role model in your deal right here, Mr. Lopez. Uh, he's a success story in his own way. Uh, so you got a heck of a role model right there. And where your parents at? Are they here? >> Congratulations, mom. And to the rest of your family for raising such a fine young congratulation for this uh big award for being nominated
for Arizona State uh what is it? Arizona State Board of Education Student of the Month. I think you're the first if I'm not I think so. Congratulations. >> Thank you so much. Good job. All right, Mr. Ramired. >> Thank you, Lena, for representing us with such pride, like oldfashioned, you know, real Rico pride. So, you just seem like such a cheerful and really bright young lady. And I know I feel that you're going to do great things in your life. So, like Mr. Beach says you have a great role model over here and thank you for raising such a wonderful child and teaching her all those great things you did to let her to be so successful. >> So thank you so much and being I know you as being son. So thank you for
all that you did as well. I know you're very dedicated. I heard a lot about you before I met you about what kind of a teacher that you are. So thank you for all you you do do every day for us. And I want to tell you in your language mando. So somebody at least greeted you here in your language today. >> So thank you so much. >> Thank you. Thank you Mr. Guerrero. >> Yeah. I mean I want to echo everything that's already been said. I mean it's not hard to tell, you know, all the great things that were said about you. I mean it just it just shines. It just it just shows. So um keep that up. Thank you for for representing the school district and Ririco High School and uh congratulations
on your recognition. Pretty awesome. >> Yeah. Thank you. Thank you again. It's the same thing ditto with everything that everybody said. You know, we kind of when they when they get to me, it's like a broken record. You know, we come over and we do the same thing. But thank you very much for being one of those students that really portrays, you know, a portrait of a graduate because that is what we are instilling in our in our students. you know, to really think of what it is that you're going to do once you move on. Okay? And apparently, you're doing, you know, everything that you need to do and and much more. Okay? You're representing real recall will never forget where you came from. Okay? Never forget. Thank you to your mom and to
everybody, you know, and your parents and, you know, your family for everything that they contribute, you know, to make you, you know, to where you are. And remember, there's still a long way to go. You still have a lot to learn. You still have a lot. and you know and hopefully you know you will come back and say I really did it because of my roots. So thank you so very much and congratulations. Thank you. One more hand for the lady. >> All righty. Moving on. Rio Rico High School uh track student recognition. Mr. Verdugo. >> Thank you. Um so that the board probably realized that we had to revise our agenda. This is the reason why because this month and so we want to make sure that we recognize as Dix for winning the
state championship and >> followed up with a runner up finish barely finishing second. um almost had a back-to-back championship in the um so I know we Mr. Beish always talks about we talk about how tough wrestling is but those two races especially the 300 hurdles Mr. Shadow knows I've always talked the 400 800 and the 300 hurdles I think are the toughest races in the entire uh track realm but to win that under the comeback and compete in the 300 is incredible so we wanted to recognize her but we'll turn over to actually Mr. sh say a few words. >> Madam President, again, members of the board, further Dr. Bill, um again, excited to be up here and recognize something that happened just now. So, Eddie, actually, we had our time fly last night and
um so quickly that it was um highlighted, mentioned, but we do have um you know, when you have the need of of modifying the agenda for this reason, it's always very very exciting. So I'll speak briefly um to it and of course coach J being here can speak in more detail but um this past weekend at Shadow Mountain High School um had us delivered one of the most exciting performances um in school history and this is coming from you know Mr. Laughlin couldn't be here because he is holding an awards um event for our our sports um competing in the division 3 state championship. She captured the state title in the 100 meter hurdles with a blazing time of 15.14 seconds. I've never tried that race. I I know for a fact I would not
be anywhere close. I don't know how many hurdles I can jump, but 15.14. That's that's quite impressive. As an edge legend um of Yuma Catholic High School by just 15 hundreds of a second. That's how close it to become a state champion in track and field which requires tremendous dedication, technical precision, and mental toughness. Eddie has demonstrated all those qualities and more. and her achievement places her among the very best athletes in Mico High School history. That was enough in terms of her accomplishment. One thing I the last thing I'd like to mention before coach comes and mentioned from his perspective is that um not only did she achieve such a great feat this weekend um she's a threeseason sport athlete. So she played volleyball and not just played, she was absolutely a member of
our historic volleyball team this year. volleyball team that won region for the first time in school history. She was part of that and not just a member. She was a very very much so I mean a dominant player as part of volleyball and she played basketball. Talk about not just being a player. Um one way I would describe the way that Addy plays basketball as a she plays I mean and and that's the competitiveness that I coaching soccer football over the years. Um, what I can say is the one thing, the hardest thing to coach and instill in our players is that edge, that competitiveness is that with Addie, if anything is all right, Addie, bring it down a little bit. But it's it's impressive and having that across in her jersey. And then fast
forward to the spring, she played track, but that's enough. She has 4.13 to be weighted and 3.839 unweighted GPA. She's currently ranked 11 of 317, putting her in the top 5% of her class. So, not only is the feat that she accomplished this weekend great standalone is awesome, then you add all these other elements. The fact that she's competing and representing our school and different programs year round and she's able to in the classroom maintain the excellence. It's impressive. So, it's my pleasure to recognize her from my perspective as principal at X for being a state championship for I mean this weekend for AIA Division 3. Congratulations. I'd like to pass it on to coach SH. >> Good evening everyone and I'll just add a few little details to what so Addison as a result
of her two races on in the division three meet earned the right to compete weekend in what's called a meet of champions which is where all five divisions come together you have to qualify within the top 18 times on last weekend from all the all divisions. So, division one to division five. We compete in division three. So, um she made that in two races, both the one the 100 and the 300 hurdles. So, um she's not done yet. Um I know we both know she's got another PR in there somewhere. So, we're going to try to find it this this Saturday. Um another little interesting fact, you know, Addison started the season with a fairly modest goal of breaking the school record um in the 100 hurdles. What's unique about that record is it was
about 20 years old from her mom. essay is that Addison truly exemplifies um we we as coaches know that you know you're the athletes do the work. You can write it, we can coach, we can yell, we can cheer, blow whistles, all sorts of things. But the athlete is the one who gets on the track or the does the work. and Addison did a tremendous amount of work in her other two sports, but also I know um I told her mom in the beginning of the season, I go like like what happened? She's she's she looks different than last year. I could tell the first literally the first week of practice and I said is her is it a weights class? And she said she doesn't have weights class. She lives by herself at home.
So she did a tremendous amount of work outside of school day before school late at night. I don't know when she got it done. It was it was visible and noticeable to me on the very first day of practice that she she put in all that extra time proving one of our mantras of the track and it worked works. So with that I will let uh Mr. Beach turn the microphone over to you. >> Oh yes. >> We want to start with questions. >> This is all his idea. >> It's his idea. Okay. It's been an amazing opportunity to compete at this level. Like you I feel like you see see people achieve all these things and you're like, "Wow, like that's awesome." But actually being in that like on that starting line with other
girls that are just as good as you is really awesome to be there and just be able to put the results from the work that coach has given me and the way he's prepared me for everything I've accomplished. It's really awesome. >> That's great. Good job. Good job. >> Yes. Hi. Um, yes. Congratulations. I know your achievement has brought a lot of pride to your team, to your school, your family, your community. And I know it takes hard work and dedication to uh to do what you what you did being a three sport athlete and still have that GPA is just something to applaud you applaud you for. So I wish you great success and no pressure. I'm just you know I'm waiting to see what comes next year. >> Congratulations. >> Thank you. Thank
you. Thank you Mr. Beach. >> Yes, Mr. Lopez. I do have faith in you. I think you can make it over those hurdles in 45. Not in 15 seconds, but 45. >> 40. Okay. >> All right. Addison, I know both your parents, uh, they were both amazing athletes in their day, and so I know those genes have been transferred to you. And, uh, I want to tell the audience, I know what it takes to be a state champion. and the countless hours down on that track in the heat, in the sun, the countless hours before school, after school, weight training, uh, dieting, everything has to has to be on on point, especially that one day called the state championship. Uh, you won by 15 hundreds of a second. You know, those are those fine details
that set second place from first place. you know, your coach Shatler teaching you those fine techniques of when to start, anticipating the uh whistle, when to kick, when to when to do this. All those little things have to all come together in order to achieve what you achieved. Uh there's not too many people that can say they're a state champion, but now that you are, you do have a mark on your back. >> Yes. The rest of the states looking at you, you're the one to beat. and uh this upcoming meet where you're going to see the best in the state and uh you know hopefully everything's on point that day and we have the entire community of Rio Rico behind you. You're representing us past athletes Josh Robless and all the other crew that
came out of uh the track and field and cross country. So there's a lot of weight on your shoulders but I think you can handle it. So congratulations >> so much. Thank you. Thank you Mr. Ramirez. >> Yes. So Addison, what year are you in? >> I'm a junior. >> Wow, that's awesome. So we got another year >> coming back. >> What What events have you done outside of hurdles and running? >> My done any other field events like the high jump? >> I did long jump um my freshman year and then partially way through my sophomore year and I really enjoyed that. It was a lot of fun. And I think it just wasn't like I saw a lot of su success in myself in the hurdle. So I kind of had to make
that decision. It kind of it it's long jump was very tedious with the work and just the form and the whole thing. So I that's why I did that. And then we also do like 4x1 and 4x4 which are super fun events. Very thrilling. >> Try the javelin to shoot >> and also javelin. >> Wow. They still have the javelin. I thought that they had done away with it. You said before she's angry. So, >> sorry, Addie. >> I too much like a football though. >> Sure. We stay on your good side. >> So, I'm not a state champion like my buddy over here. But I was a regional champion in the pole vault. And I know I know how hard you have to work to beat people. I was very lucky the day I
vaulted because I had competition at really tough. So I I understand that and I boy once you get to the state level it's really hard. It's very hard. I mean I place but it was I didn't an state champion like you. So that thank you for your hard work and dedication because Mr. Beach is right. It takes a lot to be a state champion. You really have to be spot on, you know, work hard like you doing weights all on your own and you can see that you have a lot of self-discipline. So, but thank you so much for representing our community with pride. Look forward to you doing greater things even in the future. >> Thank you. >> So, good luck to you. >> It's an honor. >> Thank you, Mr. Guerrero. >> Yeah,
Addison, first uh congratulations on your uh state championship. So, and uh also want to congratulate you on your uh athletic and academic resume. Sounds pretty impressive. Pretty cool. >> And uh good luck this Saturday. We look forward to to hearing the results of that and uh look forward to uh seeing what next year brings for you, too. >> Thanks. >> Absolutely. Thank you. Thank you. I remember your mom when she was in high school. I remember when she set that record and you remind me so much of her. Oh my god. >> Yeah. your picture in the paper where you Okay, we'll talk later about that. Okay, but anyway, no, but yeah, she your mom also played several sports and and all that. So, you I know where you get it from. You know, your
heart, but it's your hard work. It's what what is inside of you that comes out is what you know is what proves, you know, where you've been and where you're going to be going, you know, from now on. Uh you know, your dedication, you know, way to go with all that anger. Yes. Go. Go for it. Go for it. >> Oh, yeah. You do it. And the more anger the better. Doing it. Okay. Self-discipline, all that stuff. Yes. You know, do it. You know, do it. I mean, sky's is the limit. And I know that you are going to I mean, really, um, you know, we're so proud of you and you're going to, you know, shine more than you know. Congratulations, sweetie. Congratulations. Thank you. Chinese soon. All right, moving on. Uh, retirey recognition,
Mr. Verdugo. >> Thank you. U, so tonight again, we're very fortunate to to be able to celebrate students, but uh the students sometimes don't wouldn't see that success if it wasn't for the teachers. So, and staff and um our employees that are retiring. So, I'm g ahead and turn over to Good afternoon or good evening, Madame President, members of the board. It is truly my honor to present to you our Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District employees who are retiring this year. They have served our students and community for an amazing combined total of 168.5 years. So I have personally had the privilege of working alongside many of them over the years and I can absolutely attest to the magnitude of both their individual and collective impacts to our district. So please help me to
congratulate all of our dedicated educators and staff members who are embarking on their next adventures. Best wishes to all in their future endeavors, including at least one who plan to return to teach with us next year through VSI. >> Excellent. Thank you. So, we're going to start with um with some um employees who unfortunately were unable to make it today, but I do want to recognize them. Um, so the first is Miss Rhonda Kriedler. She is currently a teacher of social studies at Calabasas. She is retiring after 21 years of service to our district and she started out at Mountain View as a PE paraprofessional. I know many of you may remember that. I actually remember those days. Um, so that's excellent. And also secondly, Adriana Kamargo who is a paraprofessional in special education at
Sankaano and she has served us for 22 and a half years and she has been at Sanayatano in that role the entire time and she hopes to return with us next year. >> So now here we are. I wish I was Mr. fanning and could you know anything presentation but instead I will do my best to recognize all of your wonderful contributions by starting with Miss Carla Ramirez at Calabasas. Um but she plans to return next year to teach math with us. >> Yes. You have some other things for >> Yes. >> Here. One, two. Yeah. >> Maybe you can get the plant afterwards then. present. >> Wow. >> Next, we have Miss Crystal Merrill. Oh, she's currently a teacher in the special education preschool program, but when I first met her, she was at
Rio Rico High School in the special special education program. And she's been with us now for seven years. >> And this is my 30th year because I um retired from Las Vegas as well. Yeah. >> Right here. >> Yeah. Okay. I'll put it right here. >> Thank you. >> Also from Calabasas, we have um Miss Laura Ramos. for nine years. >> She's coming back. She >> Thank you. Now heading over. We have Isabel Gate who was a parap professional in special education for 29 years. and but I know she was also at Rio Rico High School because everywhere >> thank you. >> And now we're heading over to Mountain View to recognize Mary Matthysse. Yeah. >> Mary, how long have you taught you're here? >> Total. >> Oh, total. Um, >> and then you you've
had the adults I had to teach for 16 years. >> Wow. 20. >> Now we're at San Kayatano to recognize Margarita Lorta. >> 16 years. And last, but certainly not least, we have Barb Han from the TLA, formerly known as the Curriculum Department or the CIA. Now for for our grand finale, we're going to head up to Rio Rico High School next door. recognize Katherine Rendone, better known as Kit, for her years of the teacher has been 21 years. >> Thought we had her coming back. Did she say >> close? And so Adriana Kamaro is not here, but she plans to come back. Um we're grateful that we have a couple of teachers returning at Calabases as we mentioned. So we're really we're really thankful that all of you are committed to the district and
we are so appreciative of all the time and effort that you have put into our students. And for those of you who are opting to relax, um I appreciate you and and value that choice as well. So thank you all so much. words to the retirees. Miss >> congratulations and for a very well earned uh retirement and thank you for the many hours of dedication, passion and commitment to um educating and inspiring our students. Um, I wish you many joy, blessings, and just a very, very happy retirement. And thank you. Thank you for all you do. >> Thank you very much. Uh, Mr. Beach. >> Yep. Uh thanks to all the retirees for uh what you've done not only for our school district but for our community uh your respective schools, the classroom, but most
importantly our students uh here at Rurico uh district uh district 35. Uh I don't think you realize how many students you go down the right trajectory to be successful in life. So, uh, thank you for, uh, investing in our students and also, uh, for those of you that are not coming back to our district and making a career change, I I wish you the best. Change is good. Change is exciting. And for those that are retiring and just not going to work, uh, there still is anxiety. That anxiety is going to be, did the coffee pot turn on at six? whichever uh trajectory you pick, I wish you the best and I thank you for everything you've done for our dishes. >> Yeah. Thank you very much. >> Thank you so much for all that
you do and all the countless hours that you put in with the kids. And so I'm sure you have lots of really great stories, good and bad, that you could tell us. You know, it would be so cool if we had that kind of time to hear them because I'm sure some would be really funny, too. >> So, but um I'm sure I was just thinking about I'm sure one thing that you're really going to miss are those safety videos you had to do at the time. that's raining victory get it >> the countless emails that get them done you know >> but uh no I I know a few of you and so I worked with Kit and you were always so cheerful no matter what kinds of storms came through Rio Rico High
School political ones you know and the changes Kit was just always the same you know she just come in well okay well it's another day and we got to be cheerful again and get through it and She was always had that real positive way about her and it >> you didn't realize it. You used to make me crack up when I go to my room. I think, yeah, that's a great attitude. No matter what has happens, you have this cosmic sense of humor about it all. So, but little do you realize that probably your hubby has plans for you. So, >> so and Carla, I want to thank you again. And I know I've done it before at the at the opening ceremonies at the school year, but you did a lot for me and
I remember how you helped me out with the computer when I was first there. And it's funny because I had already retired from Rio Rico High School and you go in there with to the, you know, you're a veteran teacher, but it doesn't make a difference because when you show up at a new school, >> it's a totally different ball game in you, the new kid on the block. And the teachers, it's just, you guys know this that when you're brand new, you know, the veteran teachers look at you and you have something to prove to us here before, you know, we're going to accept you. So that's the way it was. But Carla and Julie, too, they were very accepting. They helped me out and they're really sweet people. And I you did a
lot for sports, too, at the school, too. So, we're very grateful. I'm very grateful personally for all that you did to help me out because it made a big difference with my kids. So, thank you from the bottom of my heart and congratulations to you all and wish you nothing but the best in your future plans. Thank you. >> Thank you very much, Mr. Guerrero. >> I just want to echo what Mr. Ramita said. Thank you guys. Um it's greatly appreciated. 168 years, you know, that's a pretty impressive number in this room. So, uh thank you. Wish you guys the best. And uh those of you that are coming back, thank you. We need that for sure. Um and yeah, wish you the best. Thank you, Bill. >> Yeah. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you, Mr. Um same thing with me. I mean, you know, I also worked at Calabasas for 26 years, so I know most of you people do, all of them. Uh we've had, you know, our you know, conversations here and there, you know, during all of this time that we've been uh you know, that we've been uh working. And uh I really uh appreciate everything that you guys do, your dedication, you know, the passion that we have, you know, the love for our kids because there are times when you know and I know that most of you have done it before, you know, I did it too many times too where you look have this kid in front of you and you're like, "Oh my god, I'm going to kill you." You know, or something
and you turn around and I always turned around and thought, "Oh my god, give me strength because I probably am the only one that loves this kid." Okay? And I know that a lot of you have done it. Okay. So, I mean, I we really appreciate everything that we do. A lot of people don't understand what we go through because we get all of the, you know, all of that stuff, you know, and we have to deal with it. Plus, you know, you're trying to teach these kids. You're trying to set them on the right track. You're trying to make, you know, the best that you can. and and I know how much you guys, you know, what it is to be, you know, at at the school district with all of them, you know,
but um I really appreciate some of the ones that are going to be coming back, you know, I'm glad that you are, you know, and um and most of all for, you know, everything that you have and that you are still going to do, okay? You know, for those of you that are going to travel the world, oh my god, congratulations. And uh I can't do it, but I'm glad that some of you guys are going to be able to. and um thank you very much for everything that you've done for all of our students, you know, and everything that you taught because even though we think that they don't listen, they really do. They really, really listen. Okay, so thank you very much and congratulations to each and every one of you. >> The
district staff recognition, uh Mr. Verdugo stay there. I'm the presenter for >> So, um, last morning, um, I believe had a large recognition of I don't know what 60 plus teachers for team. Um, and so, uh, the person that that organized that was Megan. Um and so u one of the things that uh my team was talking about um we'd like to recognize um for all of her work that he's done. Um she is very humble and if I would have put it on the agenda she would be what is this all about? So that's why it just says staff recognition because >> and so tonight we're we're recognizing her not only the launch team and all the she did with that but also for the strategic plan which took almost an entire year and
so I wanted to thank her for the dedication. and she's been an instrumental piece of our district and making sure that uh from standardsbased grading to personalized learning, the launch team with our strategic plan, just a a huge piece of our district. Uh I know we have some members of her family that are here. Here. >> Oh my god, you guys are too sweet. Thank you. >> And she's also been filling her under the web, so I was certain she wasn't gonna be here tonight, >> but glad I did. Thank you. >> So, this is for in recognition for all of the the work. I appreciate it. >> Thank you so much. >> I'll be >> I know they're gonna have some questions. >> Hey, Megan, do you have anything to say? >> I think
you guys have to hear me enough. Yeah, >> I'm just quoting Mr. Beach over here. >> Well, I thank you for the recognition. I certainly don't do anything I do for the recognition. Um, it's for our students, for our community. And um, you know, a lot of what was said about our students here tonight and our retirees, those are things that are also important to me. You know, showing up every day and giving it everything I have. Um, and just remembering why we're here. So, I really appreciate you guys recognizing me. Um, but if you know me, I never settle for where we're at. So, um, I always tend to see the things that we still have yet to do. So, I appreciate you guys recognizing me for this, but there's still more I can
do. >> Good job. Good job. >> Megan, I think this is a very welld deserved recognition. I for one am very happy that you are part of you're so hardworking. You're very helpful. You're approachable and I just know that you're going to be doing great things in the future for our district. You continue to grow every day and I'm just so happy for you. >> Thank you very much, Mr. Beach. Making our those parents behind you? >> Yes. >> I know you have an amazing family. Uh to your parents, you raise a a fine young woman right here. Uh she's definitely an asset to our district, goes above and beyond the bar on a daily basis. I worked with you on the strategic design plan that took over a year and I remember you walking
in and going, this is sort of all new how to run the meeting and where we're going, but the end product was perfect. And I think Superintendent Verdugo and yourself, you're constantly challenging yourself and these are very big tasks that you take on. and that's how you become better as an individual and just like you said right now you're never satisfied. So, uh, continue doing what you're doing and we're blessed to have you here at District 35. >> Thank you. Thank you, Mr. >> Thank you for all you do, Megan. When I worked at Calabasas, I remember you used to come and do your presentations with us and, you know, you're always so cheerful. You're like, you're cheerful no matter what happens, you know, and you'd always try your hardest. And I had heard from
teachers around you at different schools that when you didn't know something or you were challenged by them intellectually, you would always look things up or lean on other colleagues that maybe knew something and then you come back and that's something I never said to you before, but I think it's really neat and you can see in you too that you're never satisfied, which is a great thing. You know that >> a friend of mine who's mentors used to say that you accomplish something great the next greatest thing is talk about putting hurdles right is to put another hurdle in front of you and challenge yourself in your life. So that's you like you just said you know you're not satisfied and superintendent like that too like Mr. reach that's well set. But um congrats for
all that you do. You deserve it and oh you got a lot of heart because you run the t tender loving administration. >> Thank you. >> Good job. Good job. Uh Mr. Guerrero. >> Yeah, Megan. Uh welld deserved. Um it's awesome that your family's here to to share this with you and it's it's it's not hard to see um all the work you do and all the things you do for the school district. So thank you. It's appreciated. >> Thank you so much. >> Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. All right. Uh, well, I've seen you. I've known you since you were a teacher. When you first started, a baby teacher, you know, and, uh, when you first started at, uh, at Calabasas a million years ago. We're not going to talk about that, but
anyway. But I've seen you grow. I've seen you I've seen, you know, how throughout all of the years, you know, everything that you've done, you've always had, even when you were a teacher, you have such a positive attitude. You have, you want that knowledge. You want to be better. you want to, you know, help anybody in any way that they can. And and you know, that's just, you know, that's just you. You know, you're very approachable. You're hardworking. You're knowledgeable. I mean, what else can I say? I can continue on for hours. Okay? You know, just, you know, just saying little things that I know about you. You know, you're a fantastic person, a fantastic mom with your kids. I'm sure your husband and your parents and um you're all all over the place. And
we are so so grateful that you are here with us. And I can't wait to see what's up next because I know that you all are have something else to do with nothing else. >> Thank you. And it's certainly we can't do anything. You know, we're all a team, right? So, >> exactly. >> Me being recognized. That's also thanks to everybody right here. Also, the team, >> the principles, all of the teachers, it's kind of like what coach Shadler or I think Addie said, someone said like I make the workouts, they do the work. I often I try to set the conditions, find the funding, find the resources so that we meet their needs. And so I really appreciate being part of this team with every >> Thank you very much. >> Thank you. >>
All righty. Uh we're going to give them a minute if people would like to be Congratulations. Congratulations so much. I love the picture in the newspaper. >> The certificate. >> It's on your certificate. >> I love it. So, >> you look awesome. >> Here, I can do this. >> I'll take that. >> That's like mine, too. >> Thank you for the nominations. >> That was our house. >> But you're already That's right. >> Okay, moving on. Uh, superintendent report. Mr. Verdugo, >> thank you. Um, just uh really cool celebration season obviously starting tonight when transitions uh ceremon graduation then I do have other items on the agenda so I'll keep it all righty good job all righty uh governing board report Missiva >> yes I attended the FFA awards banquet and also the flying rock
awards uh ceremony last night um it's just wonderful to see so many students being recognized uh so much talent. So it was just a wonderful evening >> to share with >> uh fellow board members. >> Thank you Mr. B. >> Well to all the principles out here. No >> everybody's got principal day apparently uh last week I believe. I saw it on social media but uh if you get the message to them uh we appreciate everything uh they do. Dave, >> I know there's been a lot of changes, a lot of moving around of principles and uh they're doing an outstanding job and uh they're adapting very well. So, we appreciate him not only on that day, but every day. Uh there was also a communicator day award in Audra the big day she's not
here but uh she's also plays a critical part in our district as far as getting the narrative out there to the public and the photographs that go along with that narrative. That's a huge relev congratulations there. Time to fly awards. Yeah. Wow. We got some great athletes and man on. >> Did the females step up? Had uh five that just signed to go on to play collegiate uh collegiately after high school. Uh we had uh one track, three volleyball, and one wrestler, all females and beyond uh high school uh level, taking it to the next level at the collegiate level. So, congrats. And uh hats off to Chris Laughlin. Put on a heck of a show last night. Uh it's a I call it a production and uh the very passionate athletic director pushes his
coaches not only in the sporting arena but he pushes them also uh get their teams involved in community events and community uh things that are going around in our community. And not only that, pushing them to do offseason camps and going down to the middle schools etc. So, hats off to Mr. Laughlin and uh hats off to all the athletes that were there last night. It was an amazing uh accomplishment for all of them. And I think that's about it. >> Okay. Thank you very much, Mr. Ramirez. >> Yes. So, Angie, thank you for all that you did and the rest of the crew to put all this together because it's a lot of work. >> Yep. >> And uh thank you also for helping me out many times to do other stuff and, you
know, help me out with my students etc. and the parents and so forth. So I want to thank Mr. Adugo for that too. I appreciate it very much. And um just you know if any teachers are hearing you finish strong and don't get discouraged at the end of the year because a lot of people throw the towel in. So if anybody's out there listening you know your daughter said she's listening. She listens to governing >> board and that one old lady in Timbuktu. >> So yeah it was it was great. And um I just want to mention just say this quickly that service that Mr. Be had for his mother was beautiful. Really beautiful. He did a great job. He's such a great public speaker, but he did a great job of putting that all
together at his house. And it was really something else. And got to see a lot of former teachers. Got to see Jeremy Watson that I had seen him in years. He look like Father Christmas with a white beard, you know. But uh that's about it. That's about all I got for tonight. >> Thank you very much, Mr. Guerrero. >> Yeah, I just want to say thank you to Angie and Pudra for uh bringing donuts by the fire station for International Firefighter Day. >> I didn't even know they surprised. >> Awesome. Thank you guys so much. >> That's it. Oh, all righty. Okay. All righty. Well, I just wanted to say everything that everybody says ditto. Um, I was also I also went to the FFA awards banquet which was amazing. I will I uh I
participated in the Golden Hawks award. Unbelievable how many students got you know scholarships from all over the place. I mean multiple student I mean multiple scholarships for one student and stuff is like >> that's fantastic. Uh, I went to the to the to the DARE um show. You did two for that one. There uh the the talent show. Uh, we went to that one, but that was last time. The fly the what is it? The time to fly awards. Uh, the end of the year showcases. I went to two of them. One for fifth grade and one for third grade on two different days at Sankayetano, which was the first time for me. I had never gone. Oh my god, it was so amazing. Oh my god, these kids were they had to do like
posters and books that they had read and they were in character and everything and there was like a button on the floor and you walked in and you press it and then they would repeat you know what they what they liked about the book, what they didn't like, what kind of a character they were and I mean it was fantastic for the third grade. The next time I went I think it was one was on a Wednesday and the other one was on a Friday. The Friday one it was third graders and they were they did brochures. They did little brochures and they were talking also about the brochures. What really floor me and they left you know things they there were this is from China, Italy. There was food that people had made you
know I guess the parents you know about what they were doing. But what really really really impressed me a lot was their reading abilities because they were reading, okay, like the little scripts, okay, and there were third graders and I was like, how you what grade are you in? And all of them all of them were the same. It was it was I mean congratulations you know to Miss um Arenia you know that she's the principal over there because it was such an amazing you know time that we had and it went by about it was about an hour or something because you had to go in like this you know and all of the third graders were there parents were there the fifth graders and everything and you know but it was just something
that I look forward to seeing again. I really do because it was that good. It was so I was very impressed though, you know, and everything out that everybody's doing. I mean, this is the last couple of weeks, you know, we're almost there. We're almost I see, you know, we're sliding and we're almost at the end of the of our school year. So, you know, congratulations to all of the principles. Hang in there. It only gets better. Thank you very much. That was good for me. >> Have the floor. >> Oh, yes. I'm sorry. There you go. >> Thank you. I just want to tell you that with being I know being from having she lived with Ila so I used to get that's why I got to know and I said something to her
in Filipino language but we were talking about how it's very you guys you might find this interesting it's very hard to find good Filipino footage in the United States and you can go to Tucson and you still can't find it. So there's a place in Phoenix and it's called called at my place. So that's why I was telling her that. I thought, well, maybe they overheard that. They thought that she was going to have Filipino booths at my place, but that's the name of the restaurant I was at. >> Nice cover story. >> Uhhuh. I I I I heard he's taking her home. He's taking her home. >> No, seriously, that's And if you ever want to go, it's up there. It's off of Warner. >> It's off the 202 or no, the 101. It's
hard to find good Filipino food. Anybody any of your teachers here, Mr. Google will tell you that. In fact, well, I mean, I'm surprised because your wife's so I don't know if she likes Filipino food or not, but >> there you go. So, you can tell her that it's there's a place up there in Phoenix. It's the only one that really serves good Filipino food. >> I thought I'd mention that you very much. >> You knew I had heard, huh? Yeah. Just kidding. All righty. Mo, moving on. Information, discussion, action. The budget revision 2025 2026. Mr. Verdugo. Madam President members of the board as we bring all this celebrations to an end the school year division doesn't want to be awesome the final budget provision for this fiscal year. Um main um today's revision mainly
reflects updates to our student enrollments or carryover investments from the prior fiscal year and updates to state grant funds. Uh the first element and the most important element um in putting our budget together is in our role. So when I bring to you and when I when I'll come to you in the next month or so typically I did for the following fiscal year I'll be bringing in project. So this time of year for June 2025, my general protection was 3,311 and I am happy to report the actual 100th day ADM which is revised and we start with a projected and we have to must revise our budget with the 100th day ADR and that is the last mark and the last meeting that came in at 3,365 >> 54 students above that. >> That's
awesome. Um on the other hand, the group we group of um different categories to provide additional additional services to our students. My projection was 1,94,985 being one of our projection. So that's great. Um now both of those um adjustments uh are going to um positively impact our funding calculations and contributed to the revisions that I'm presenting to you tonight. Um the next one that I look at is the adjusting the carryover adjustment at the carryover from the prior year. Again, when I come and put together the for the new year, we're still in what we call period. The period runs from July 1 to the end of August and it allows us to processing transactions for the prior year so we can finalize the fiscal year. So with that said um tonight I did the
final um calculation of the year of the um carryover which was also reflected in the far and that's why we see some adjustments in our general funds. Um, I don't know if you remember, but as we were putting together our budget for this fiscal year, there was a lot of um uncertainty with federal funding, >> whether we were going to have a lot of our grants, whether they were going to be, you know, suspended, reduced, and it turns out that we got more federal funding. >> Yes, unnecessary pressure. Uhhuh. >> That's the environment that we're in today, right? >> So that's why you see an increase in the in the totals for grant. >> Um so just to summarize the M or main fund or operating fund, the one that's dedicated over 80% and benefits,
I'm able to increase it by $1.3 million. um bringing it from 44.3 to 45.7 again that adjustment in enrollment the carryover um so that uh reflects a 2.8% 8% increase. On the other hand, the district additional assistance or capital fund, I was also able to increase by 92,39. It's a much smaller fund. >> And now we're talking 40 million capital or million. You can see >> different um bringing it to a total capital fund of 4.66 million, which represents an a 2% increase from where we started. Um in the area of the federal programs um the revisions total $173,034 that was an increase um from the prior from what we were presenting at the beginning which represents 38.6% income. Um the in the state grants the revision total it was minimal 3,881 bringing total in
state grants of 509 and 13. Um in addition I take advantage of this uh revision and I um adjust or cash accounts right or gift and donations to make sure that we account for every donation that you have approved throughout the year. I project in case we are going to receive any more um donations to be able to capture that so that um we can spend that money um for the next two months. And I also um went ahead and modified our school facilities board um to capture the full amount of what is happening in Calabasas right um so Calabasas is benefiting from 2.9 million models of the building with more grants at this time. So that summarizes the adjustments that I made to the budget. Does this again have my own budget adjustments for
this year? >> Are there any questions? >> Okay. Um, are there any questions, Mrs. >> Mr. Beach? >> No, I was a little worried about the federal grants and, you know, coming down to the state level back down to the district level. So, actually surprised that we got more in grant money. So, that's that's a plus and a bonus. But, uh, thanks Cella for all you people keeping us on uh, keeping us in the blue and not in the red. >> Mr. >> Thank you, S. They always do a great job, like he said, of keeping us in the in the blue. And as you know, I've always I always talked about whether we had rainy day funds. I was just wondering what percent do we have in the event of an emergency? We've talked
you've talked about before, but I forgot. No, >> we have a 4 million set aside. What percent of the budget is$42 million? So that's that's what we have in our in our um contingency. And sometimes when we capture savings throughout the course of the school year um instead of coming up with ways of spending them and we just keep adding to our contingency that we get >> that's way more than 4% the 4.5% that the state used to mandate that we >> that was the maximum that we could carry over. That 4% reduction that you're referring to was the maximum that a school district could carry over. And what that created at that time and during those years is if a school district had more than 4% and themselves we were in that position many
years we would then um paid things in advance. So the state would allow us to pay insurance ahead of time so that we can bring our funds down to that 4% and then you would recapture it was just the main game. You recapture the budget capacity the following year and so on. until they eliminated that 4% and then you can truly carry over whatever you need to carry without having to do prepaids and those kinds of >> I want to squeeze this in there for the superintendent but I keep hearing great things about dual enrollment and >> we'll talk a lot about it you know all over the place and I just want to tell you that I I feel confident we're we we're going to start getting more kids coming here because they're hearing
about it but it would be nice we got the word out more to increase enrollment So it is kind of related. >> There is a sure did a interview with Arizona um I can't remember the outlet but they will be um it's all about our room program in our pathways. >> So feeding should be coming out in the next couple weeks. >> I know we do a lot already but it'd be nice anything extra to get that word out there. And the last thing I want to say is that but you know I was a chess coach so I was just wondering if by any chance we could get that 90 plus thousand that you said that's extra and maybe get that win a baggo I always wanted for the chess team you know they
put in poss but they got rejected every single time you know >> okay it goes on the bottom of >> sitting sitting at the at the table and just listening and seeing all those recognitions from teachers retiring from students, you know, getting to state being state champions. I mean, it's a true reflection of how we allocate our resources and the programs that we are supporting and how we are using the resources to make a difference in the life of our students and our staff. >> Absolutely. I I remember telling you this once before that you probably thought that I would get >> because I got rejected on some things or used to tell us no R you have to do this and you have to cross all your tees and dot all your eyes you
know but I was I look at you and I think that's the way it should be. So you did a great job. Thank you. >> Okay. Thank you very much Mr. Guerrero. >> Yeah. Thank you. I have no questions. >> You have no questions. All right. Okay. I know. just again, you know, thank you so much for I've always said it every single time for your vision for for how much you how well you you you know, you predict things that are going to happen that you keep us like they said, always in the in the in the blue, none in the red, you know, and that you've always, you know, put in in the back of your mind somewhere, you know, that what if this happens and what if that happens and that we're
always safe, you know, and I think that is like an excellent way of working with things and and especially with the money and then because we don't know what's going to happen later on like you said last time, okay, we didn't know that we were going to get more. So, we're lucky because you know we we're landing on top, you know, of things. So, just thank you so much to you and to all your, you know, all of your staff that um for everything that you guys do and Mr. Verdu, I know that you that you contribute to, you know, to her with with everything that you guys do. So, you guys are a fantastic team. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. >> Thank you. We're very very fortunate. Yes. >> Again, every
day it seems like I see another school closure or somebody that has a $5 million deficit that that is actually this fiscal year, you know, and those type of things. And so when we budget, we're always very fortunate to to make sure that we are fiscally responsible and whatever we put in place, we know we can can >> that's what I'm saying. >> And we see an increase versus a decrease. >> Yes, absolutely. only happen when you have the support of leadership because I think with my recommendation and say you need to stay here and and if leadership doesn't support those things happen very thankful >> that's why I that's why I said that you know because that's where you guys you know those are the hard um you know um you know conversations that
you guys have no why because of this but why you know it's like you know it's just like when we were going to give you know the the raises and that but Why can't it be more? And then of course you talk about it and you're going, "Oh, okay. All right. All right. I get it." Okay. You know, that those are the things that that you guys do so well, okay, to keep us afloat. Okay. And again, you know, we can't thank you enough and we are very lucky to have you guys in our district. Thank you so very much. >> And and it is an action item, so we need to >> Oh, I do I have a motion? Motion to approve the presented revised fiscal year 2025 2026 budget as presented. Additionally, in
accordance with the ARS 15905.6 or that point G, the governing board authorizes the district administration to overspend any one functional area line item within the maintenance and operations section of the budget without exceeding the total budgeted expenditures. >> A second. Okay. All those in favor say I. >> I. All those opposed, nay. Eyes pass. Eyes have it. Um. The motion passes. Uh, the Jed update. Mr. Verdugo. >> Thank you. Um, sorry. you um each received summary of a meeting that was held last week um to discuss um what it was a study session held by the time um and their board to determine whether they were going to move forward with pursuing a bond um and I sent you um that notification and it said possible well that's no longer possible they have moved forward
with it so they have now placed it ballot um is the data from San County that they have placed it on the ballot board and I don't know the specifics of it yet of what the numbers are because again as you see in the uh the update I gave you there was just not a lot of clarity of what they're looking for there is uh numbers and some possible we know um having done our own bond that there has to be some specifics um so that should be forthcoming um and I was sure that was important, but my recommendation is the board is to have this as a an item and really go with it once we get that information. Um, and u look at developing our own on paper because I don't think that
we support that. I'm can't speak for the entire board, but I think we need to have that discussion of what that looks like um in opposition because I don't think it's positive for our community. Um, and you know the numbers that they're talking about 90% of the funding of, you know, they're proposing anywhere from 153 million to 220 million is to put 90% of that in their campuses. There's only and if you look at it, 90% of students go to the satellite campuses. And so it's it's it's should be reversed. And and um all 14 uh superintendent are in agreement at this point um that we oppose it. Um and so that's something that is um concerning you know that they're still moving forward. Um but at the study session um the board president from
USD was very vocal for our community um stating that it's not something that our community supports. So I appreciate that. Um we weren't invited. I would I would have been happy to to be there but they invited a few other superintendents to to be part of their their discussion and um it didn't go well. I it just they they they shared the opposition that we have and they still decided to move forward with the the proposed bond. Um and again it's something that if we had more time we could probably get behind. Um but as I shared with them um NUSD just passed a bond. We're just finishing up a bond. Um, and so now you're going to we're going to go out and ask our community to to spend more tax dollars on something
that may not even benefit our community. Um, and so that's something that's very concerning uh for us. So, but I'm happy to answer any questions about the update. >> Do you have any questions, Mr. >> Mr. Beach? >> No, I think you share same sentiments. >> Yeah. Yeah. Mr. Ramirez. >> No, neither. I'm I'm I I'm in agreement with what you're saying. I mean, it doesn't seem fair, you know, or anything that we're not going to be benefiting from this huge amount of money, yet our our, you know, our stakeholders, you know, our community is going to have to, you know, pop up the bill. No. So >> I don't know if Miss Brown has any additional comments because she she actually attended a meeting uh last week as well on my behalf discussing not
they didn't discuss the bond but they just uh the J10 in general >> my just shared the district um it is unfortunate to in the two meetings are it is very their attitude puma secret is they're determined. They're determined to move forward and how we feel as a member of district because member the message was very very I mean those difficult conversations you just mentioned they were having and was just not open to changing their position. >> Yeah. And and thing that they as a a goodwill and and believe in they believe it's on their part is they're increasing our current funding from 66% to 67% 1% increase >> um they see we're giving you money >> um and and so and we >> we know those games and so and again just very disappointing
>> I can do a better job with that >> yeah 66 to 67% and they removed some of the items that they have supported member districts with in the past that have lived outside of the of the IDA. Those um options are not going to be available for u member districts anymore. We have to pay them out of our allocation. So it's not a true 1% decrease. >> Yeah. So, so again once we we get more specifics, um we'll we'll bring it back to the board. Um because again, I think uh we do have some time to develop our own con statements. I think that's the next step for boards is is the opposition to it. Um but then also if it somehow does pass because you know that there it's it's it's all 14
districts. So it's a it's a large ballot initiative. Um, and so our district, our county is one of the smaller.
