018in no no no no all right now okay uh we'll take a two minute break and then we will proceed with the rest of the presentation for tonight okay we'll be turning things over to dr davis and mr burke for a series of presentations on if student safety data systems ixl performance results the professional development plan followed by uh mr chisholm uh presenting a technology assessment and adjustment plan take it away all right hopefully you can hear me i will try to talk loudly and clearly i've been encouraged to be uh cogent compelling and probably most of all concise since we have four presentations this presentation you could watch if you want to go on the youtube channel is actually presented at the last board meeting but because it wasn't a regular board meeting we

019thought it was important to present again in this forum so this is a school safe self-assessment for determining grades under hiv it's done yearly you know schools go through and review uh how they're performing in a couple different indicators it's really helps to inform and then guide programs trainings both for students staff parents caregivers and for us to make sure we're following practices and policies and procedures so uh the first slide really just speaks to how we graded ourself out of 78 points and i know the board you've had this and we've talked about it before so there's different things in regards to programs where you can earn 15 points training there's general training you could do based on board policy uh and other instruction and training programs may happen in the classroom maybe presented

020by you know health and comprehensive health and pe could be school counselors there's curriculum instruction that goes along with it too and other related skills the hip personnel making sure you have a full staff and they're trained the school level hiv incident reporting procedures are we following the timelines as defined are we following the investigation procedures you know exactly the way we should and then are we reporting them out and then you see our overall grade what we see here is there are some areas that we've identified that we could do better that slide is uh you can find it online too it's our anti-bullying specialist and our district coordinator so for us you know we want to make sure that yes we're doing the mandatory trainings we want to make sure we're collecting and

021gathering the data right now we use a system which called my k12 it starts from the you know on the onset of a claim all the way through to the end where it potentially gets presented to the board for consideration and review and there's a second follow through we follow the timelines we're completing the state reports and we're doing the required state reports such as this and the next one that i'm going to do but i think this is where um you know we find different things we're very proud to say that we make sure all our intake bullying specialists are trained we actually use njpsa the fda training depends on the training it's either two to three days they move to a virtual format right now in person's great too but they're going through

022our school counselors are all identified as school safety specialists when we hire a new assistant principal or principal within that first year of hire we have them go through that training as well one of the things that we're proud of some of the work that's happening right now both at havill and mansion is a review of the school of character initiatives and uh manchester is working on further refining and then javelin's uh really working together and collaborating with with uh uh the the mansion faculty and staff to get their uh pvis program up and running too so it's great to see the buildings collaborating the administrators the faculty and the staff so it's good things one of the things that came out of this too and we've had a lot of changes at the administrative

023level is the recreation of school safety teams at some of the buildings so some of the buildings had them and they were working and others re created they reinstituted the the meetings with the anti-bullying specialists and the any bullying coordinator i know there were some meetings i believe earlier this week or late last week reviewing some of the data that you'll see in the next presentation and then talking about some things that we can do we really are looking at extending some of the personal uh their personnel uh our faculty and staff trainings to make sure that they they understand the supports in regards to hiv but then also our parents and caregivers um we were working really diligently to gather some you know strong presenters in that area so we'll be looking forward to

024seeing some of that hopefully before the school year ends so once again there are some things that we know we want to improve some of the school level incident reporting tracking alleged aggressors and then alleged recipients of to make sure that we can make make sure one that they're supportive but then also make sure that um if there are trends and things that we can identify that we can provide some of these trainings and supports for all stakeholders disciplined data that's where you talk about uh the hiv code conduct infractions looking some of the things we know appropriate use of technology you know we're seeing some trends in regards to uh the interview inappropriate use of some of the social media platforms uh kids really need to understand what that means and i think parents

025and caregivers need to understand that a little bit too um character education you know we do some things really well uh in and i use mansion as the example with their roar expectations and that pbis really strong we want to see that go throughout the buildings sometimes peer mediation becomes some of the conversations so kids know how to work with one another to go through with some of these struggles and that's much more abbreviated than last month for the board any questions yes we already spoke briefly about uh certainly some of the things you'll be doing at the high school level for outreach for different programs to be able to help things there to provide some additional tools because certainly we're beginning to see some trends so thank you i look forward to getting an

026update right you see uh you see on the board agenda there's some reference in regards to a presentation it's really more about uh character and getting involved but it's really important at the high school level and sometimes by being involved you don't get yourself making poor decisions being part of the school and identifying the school is one we are also working with the prosecutor's office right now to get some of those cyber safety trainings we're also looking at for updated and timely training as well it's really important at this point to make sure everybody understands the expectations and the implications but also how to be good cyber citizens citizens in general to understand not only in mansion you know the roar expectations really defined across all environments what does it look like to be have

027raw behaviors in the classroom what's it look like to be in the hallway what's it look like in the bathrooms what's it look like to wearing lunch what's it look like extracurricular activities all those things need to be fun be defined in our school so we're working to get some of those more formal presentations both for like i said students faculty and staff as well as parents and caregivers i just want to let you know that if any of these services um that we could use need any funding that the audubon had to touch pokemon rotary as you know would definitely be interested in helping the funding for it so i was invited to present that mr miller was there as well they're doing some supports with regards to social emotional learning so uh it

028was great to be there and also to hear the panel and then talk and people participate in that yeah as a panelist you were great okay all right it's a repeat for the board so they had a lot of questions last time all right ssds okay so for the board members we have several board members that are new twice a year we present the ssds data it's the school safety data the semi-annual district school safety data report it replaced do it this way it replaced uh some of the older it was used to be the edd rs um it's been updated that actually occurred you know several years ago it redefined uh some of the areas and condensed some of the areas under school safety when you report so we have to report all our

029incidences over the course of the year and what happens is the first six months from uh really july through december is the first reporting period and then january through june is the second reporting fee so we'll do this again typically we try to do it in july but sometimes it takes a little bit to get all the data so we'll do it july or august so there's different categories and possible offenses you know you can go through arson assault computer trespass their substance use confirmed some suspected if they refuse an exam threat if it's simple threat if it's criminal criminal theft if it's over ten dollars so there's specific things that we have to do right uh in regards to reporting so we there's policy and regulations for all these and sometimes in sub-categories you'll

030see things in regards to assault or possession of controlled substance or possession of a weapon certain things that we have to do that's part of poor policy and and then there's author the school safety plan and then school procedures we do cooperate very well with the police department sometimes we need guidance and support other times we need reinforcement the faculty and staff professional learning the dare program we do have food and clothing pantries i'll use the example once again what keeps our students safe things such as roar we do the review of the safety month so now this part is what's reported so from july 1 through december 31st of this year we have zero hib alleged in the preschool and in havilland four and mansion four in the junior senior high you go across

031and you see which ones are confirmed so the mansion four alleged were not confirmed four uh the four alleged in the high school were confirmed trainings could be district trainings they could be online trainings um they could be part of faculty meetings they could be part of grade level meetings so they go through and define them and then programs so programs that are put in place such as some of the roar lessons and those expectations so you can see we we have a variety of things happening within the buildings and one of the things as we work together one with what's happening in hiv and the school safety team is to really coordinate these efforts right we're talking about you know we were remote or in some sort of a hybrid presentation of learning for

032the last two years whether we were remote then hybrid remote so some of the things that we normally would do some of the assemblies some of the trainings that we would normally do didn't occur so i know and we are seeing it within our buildings there's some learning and some new education that needs to be done across the board the report breaks it down further in regards to violence vandalism substances weapons and then other incidences so when you go through you know violence reports of violence from you know a case in mansion and then the junior senior high there were two a case of vandalism in the junior senior high substances being found weapons none and then other incidences so when you look at that long list there's different things that happen it the report

033itself actually breaks it down into subcategories so when we're reviewing in a district level we can have an idea if there's any trends or anything that we really need to address i left this on just as a reminder and maybe something that we won't have to remember or it will be just a memory when we were doing emergency drills when we were hybrid and we had half the students in on monday tuesday and then half the students in thursday friday we actually had to double up on the drills because each group needed to make sure that they had two drills so it was it was twice the drills um the big thing and um i know the community loves my my messages that i send you know tomorrow will be sending just an update one

034of the debate updates in regards to security drills is there now one per month and there's a new parent notification i'll say a little bit more when we get into the agenda so that'll go through we do emergency bus evacuation drills sometimes new board members will ask why we're a walking district well our kids and you can see it on the agenda are starting to go back on field trips so the fact that any at any moment our kids could be on a bus for some reason uh all our students across pre-k through 12 need to do a bus evacuation drill twice a year this is just some of the guidelines that you have to follow with the bus evacuation drills coming up front going out the back talk about the window exits we don't

035actually practice that and we also don't practice going out the roof but you talk about it so addressed in 2021 there are certain things that were done in regards to pandemic protocols we follow them based on the cdc and the department of health pandemic protocols to make sure the faculty and staff understand sometimes its custodial maintenance staff was part of that a lot of signage went up and maybe some signage is going to be coming down pretty soon we were placed walkie-talkies uh for the key folks at the district level across the building and we're working on redistributing some of those walkie-talkies that we used to have on that mansion in havilland which will be very helpful during safety drills and in times of emergency and just in regular school day so if you take

036your students out for recess activity you can use the walkie-talkie and get a hold of the main office and also the nurse sometimes you know staff member may be the only one out there so to have that contact is really important stakeholder training i can't say it enough you know one of the things that really came out from both these reports is really about making sure everyone's educated [Music] some references in regards to ssds and then our school safety specialist is anthony carbone uh he's participating in some of the state level training it's actually a five-day training and right now it looks like he can only commit to three we're hoping that they'll share some additional information unfortunately they only do that training once a year um so and then bonnie smeltzer is the new

037harassment intimidation and bullying coordinator any questions for the board yes ms kessel just a shout out to a mansion for going ahead and getting 10 programs completed in the short time period i think it really made a big difference in their results [Applause] i would say there seems to be a correlation with you know education and training any other board members well thank you we have mr burke who's coming up right now so he's going to talk about ixl it's a mid-year assessment and maybe you're going to see some good things this clicker works [Laughter] i'm gonna try and give this presentation a straight face i'm a peanut counter [Music] all right um you can take them out they'll get a paw if they're well behaved all right so let's see if this thing i

038don't know what this fancy thing okay well hello everyone my name is spark i'm the director of curriculum and uh tonight i'm going to be giving a presentation on ixl data from the mid-year snapshot so what this is is ixl is a diagnostic that we used earlier in the year i gave a presentation in october and you know quite frankly i think that that's a presentation that's hard to forget you know and tonight i want to show you where we are mid-year before i move forward i do have to thank our math coach christine kozlowski she's not here right now but she was instrumental in pulling together a lot of this data for us so before i go in depth with the data let me give some context for those of you who don't know

039ixl ixcel is um it's it's two things for us right on the one hand it's diagnostic so that allows us to get a sense of where the students are and then on the other hand it's also in a place where teachers can assign the skills that are showing up that this that the students need so they have recommended skills that they can push out to students based on what the students need so it's the nice thing about it is that it's actionable data there's all kinds of diagnostics out there the good thing about using something like ixl is that it's it's a resource that we can use that the teachers can use and they get immediate feedback and then they can actually use it like i mentioned before to actually give this the student some

040practice work it's administered right in the classroom initially it takes about 45 minutes but uh one of the nice things about ixl as well is that it allows for real-time diagnostics so throughout the course of the year well i'm talking about two snapshots right like the one from october the one from the end of january and early february when teachers use it on a regular basis they always have a sense of where those students are so it stays up to date regularly uh before i dive too deep into the the actual numbers here um you know i know it's going to be an avalanche of data and and you know i've given these presentations before and you can definitely see certain people's eyes glaze over a little bit with all the numbers and the charts

041and all that kind of stuff you know who you are so the first thing i want to mention is this i'm going to be showing a very important piece tonight beyond the overall data i'm going to be showing numbers and operations and the reason i'm showing that is because that is a piece of the data that corresponds directly with what was taught in math this year at the elementary schools this speaks volumes about our program right now because recently just before the pandemic we introduced a new math series called envisions k-5 and then this year we brought it in in sixth grade as well so the reason why this is important consideration is because it lets us know do we have the right program are the teachers trained well is it being implemented with fidelity

042that's really important questions that we need to be asking ourselves whenever we bring on a new program and the only way to know that really is really looking at the data um priority standards um you know what you'll notice is that um you know a big thing that we focused on last year were priority standards and that's something that we definitely are going to be focusing on a little bit today with the numbers and operations um the other thing to point out too is that this is only ixl data while we are showing you a couple of data points in that we're showing you something from the fall and something from the winter it's only ixl please keep in mind that the teachers in their instructional practice use all kinds of data points i'm not

043going to even list them all there's a whole bunch of them but ultimately they use a lot of different pieces of data to really address the needs of a student no one assessment is really going to give a clear picture of any student you need to actually triangulate the data by using multiple points of data one of the trends that you're going to notice tonight is that the consistent use of ixl and implementing envisions with fidelity as as i've actually witnessed um is it pays off um you know doing you know go figure right like using a program with fidelity actually works so you know we're starting to see that here and one of the nice things too is that um you know when you look at this and the reason why the elementary schools

044are so important is because that's where students get their foundational skills everything is built upon that work that happens down there so you know we really can't get to do all of those amazing things like calculus if you can't add and subtract right so that's why that's so important one of the other things that that i think is important to recognize too is um the the measure that we're using in this presentation is the same measure that we used in october one of the questions was uh that came up that night was are you going to use the same measure in january as you are in um in february i'm sorry as you did in october and and the answer is yes now moving forward um you know we will probably uh start to shift

045that measure a little bit and the reason is because we can get a little bit more precise in the in the information that we're able to share with the public but i want to make sure that you know that we're staying true to our word on exactly what the uh the measure is so before i get into like like i said the avalanche of data i wanted to start with um the two slides that are probably the more nuanced and um and you know the slides that that are going to be probably the most concerning to most folks in this room um i think it's important to start here um because uh there's a lot of um there's a lot of information that goes along with it so that's why i want to start here

046okay so now for the high school um i wanted to do the high school first and uh the reason is because you know there's a lot to talk about here i can't really go in and show it grade by grade and the reason is because there's one seventh grade math teacher and one seventh grade english teacher right so we wouldn't want to and it goes up through the grades like that right so we wouldn't want to um you know do that to anybody right that's not really fair to do to any staff member we wouldn't do to a student we wouldn't do it to anybody right so that's why we are combining um the grades together for the high school part of this presentation so this is ela let me orient you to what it

047is that you're looking at and then these colors that you're seeing on the screen they will be consistent throughout this presentation so ultimately blue and green are good red not so good so blue is above grade level green is on gray level and red is below grade level this is ela this is an overview of the high school throughout this presentation for ela i'll be giving um an overview i get a little bit more precise with matt because quite frankly in october math was really the big concern so you know we do see some growth here at the high school again it's a little bit difficult to to show this because of all the grades together but you do get a sense of it ela does tend to be a fairly strong a fairly strong

048program throughout the greats all the way up from kindergarten all the way through matt all right now this is going to be the most concerning slide for everyone here right and really what this means is that we'd have to do some work and there's something that we have to look at but you know i've been consistent in how it is that we present information to you all and showing you the good the bad and the ugly right so now on the one hand a lot of folks are going to look at this and say you know they're looking at that top one the top one is the fall the bottom one is the winter and they're saying themselves wow not really a lot of broke there like it basically looks stagnant right but there's an

049important piece that i think a lot of folks need to understand this has nothing to do with the effort that teachers are putting into the classroom and let me tell you how i know this when you look and you see that 90 students 90 students grew a year's worth already this year at the high school that speaks volumes that's a lot of students now i'll also tell you this part too there's a significant number of those students that are still in the red so even though they may have grown by a whole year's worth they're still in the red that's that says something about the foundational skills that they have to make up throughout the course of this year and anytime a student grows by a whole year's worth you're talking about a lot of

050effort that goes into that so while at first blush we might look at this and say wow that doesn't look so good there's a lot more to the numbers than than really just at that first blush right you really have to dive deep into this and you know i think that understanding that 90 students grew by a whole year's worth and more um you know that certainly says something okay throughout the rest of this we're going to be focused on grades one through grade six and um on the left you'll have the fall on the right you'll have the winter so what we're looking at right now is the overall picture for mac in grade one on the left you have the fall on the right you have the winter look at the difference in

051that green section there there's a huge amount of growth that happens here that's a lot of growth to happen this is numbers and operations this is the thing that was actually taught throughout the beginning of this school year so between the last snapshot and this one again we see an extreme amount of growth um you know we go from having about 48 percent of the students on grade level to 60 and 10 off the screen there i'm going to say 67-ish 66-ish um you know that's a lot of growth in that area and then you're looking at all of those students you go from five percent of the students being above grade level to almost 20 of the students being above grade level again that that speaks volumes about the efforts of the teachers the

052selection of the program and a lot of other good work that's happening too um this is overall math oh i should point out this thing too um for grades one and two you're not going to see ela data uh we don't do i excel um in haviland avenue okay we start that in third grade so we'll get there in a moment um so overall for math look at grade two look at the good work that's happening there you see again a lot of really good growth you know um you know i mean just look at how much more green that chart is this is numbers and operations numbers and operations these teachers did such a good job that only four percent of the students in this particular skill are below grade level only four percent

053that's incredible work here's third grade again the story remains the same again seeing lots of really good growth here numbers and operations really good growth again ela we you know we've come to expect our ela scores to be really strong in this district and it's staying true today overall for math in fourth grade so again see really good growth and the overall now keep in mind when we're looking at this overall piece it's also looking at things that we haven't taught yet there's pieces that have been assessed because it's an overall assessment that that just not in the curriculum yet that's coming this spring so we'll see growth there as well but this next slide might be my favorite slide again i mean you know when you look at numbers and operations they started at

054a decent amount but they grew so much throughout the course of this year ela again really strong scores math overall and then you go to numbers and operations again you see uh just incredible growth there ela again we see a lot of good growth pretty strong scores sixth grade math now one of the things i want to point out k to five you know they this is their second year of the program first year was certainly a difficult year i mean anytime you're you know bringing out a program during a pandemic um that that certainly has its challenges but um but anyway you know this is the first year that sixth grade is using this program and then look at what they've taught this year again i mean you know the the work that's being

055done is is really good stuff so some of the things have to be said and they have to be said out loud you know a few years ago i know that i i came to the board i went to the leadership of the buildings and i went to a lot of teachers and i quite frankly said you know look we have to get a new math program they're doing away with bimet they're not going to have it here anymore we knew that our scores weren't where they needed to be and we decided at that point in time to do a year-long pilot so we piloted envisions for a full year and i know a lot of folks looked at me at the time and said wow that's a really long time why are you going

056to take such a long time to make a decision well because when you follow a process ultimately it works you give yourself the time to make really good decisions you know we took the time to identify the best resources not in new jersey the best resources in the country and then from there we gave the teachers time to look at this stuff and then from there we identified two of the best resources in the country we piloted both of them for an entire year i know miss bb's here she was instrumental in that and others were as well and you know by going through that process we're able to select the right program for a bottom up so not only that we follow through on our commitments as a an organization we made sure that

057we train teachers that we looked at the program we created pacing guys we created um instructional frameworks and then beyond that you have a leadership team that's actually supporting the endeavors of the teachers so all of that you know really i have to thank the board i have to thank dr davis and ultimately we have to thank the teachers for really doing such a solid job of bringing on a program enduring through a pandemic with it doing all of the training and then just every single day walking to the classroom and doing it the right way i think i should probably just end the presentation there that's a good place to end so so i know i just yammered on for a little bit but it's just one of the things where i literally walked

058around buildings when i started taking a look at this data with my laptop open and i just started pulling teachers aside saying you need to look at this keep doing what you're doing so um questions from the board in regards to the math grades i just want to know what solutions we have to increase growth just because i know there's about in the high school there's about 800 students give or take and 90 students that's only about 11 solid increase so i just want to know how we could get that um yeah yeah well you know i'm not going to give you a a knee-jerk um you know reaction or answer i will say this this is something now that we have this data this data isn't even a week old it literally the snapshot

059ended last friday so at this point what happens is we go we have conversations with the teacher we look at usage of ixl and other programs um you know we we basically have those conversations about okay well what is the difference you know why is it that you know from k through 6 we're seeing such good growth and then you know once we get to this level we're not you know there's a lot of factors that we have to consider too i mean the reality is they've got half the time to teach men half the time i mean they have a full block in the elementary schools they'll have that luxury at the middle school on the high school so we have to ask ourselves some questions about um you know what you know how

060do we go about improving growth up here as well we've compared the programs that they're using as well i mean we're using envisions and getting really good results so far um at the elementary school so then the question is you know is that something that we need to look at so there's a you know it because envisions does continue on right so then you know there's a lot of questions that need to be asked so um i'm not going to sit here and pretend like i have a full-fledged plan just yet because that would be disingenuous um you know the the thing that you can be assured of is that this friday and all the teachers here they all know exactly what we're doing on friday already the big purpose of friday having that in-service

061on friday is so that teachers can look at the data and they can ask really tough questions about okay hey you know what you know where are the kids how can we help support them but then also we have to look at some programmatic uh questions as well so that is the right question um and i just can't give you a full answer yet no problem thank you good awesome job on math results i mean i think that really just has to be called out it's phenomenal to be able to celebrate that yeah and i think the question is right how do we do that at the next level but the foundational piece what's been accomplished in such a short time is amazing thank you yeah yeah yeah and and you know really you know

062i mean enough can't be said about the work i keep pointing over here because there's a lot of the teachers that are doing work right there um but the um but you know the reality too is you know when we have a good number of students making growth at the high school but you know they're still in that red area we have to ask ourselves about okay they're they're they must be missing some kind of foundational skills so now the big question is going to be two when these kids come from the elementary schools and they start getting pumped into the high school with really solid foundational skills what that means is then that you know the teacher the next teacher up you know they don't have to dive as deep into the foundational skills

063and they can you know really push them along to that next level because quite frankly you know it is difficult when you have 40 i forget 45 minutes i think it is um you know period at the high school you know to differentiate and dive deep into each individual student there are challenges to that so um so certainly um yeah another question will students be able to continue to use ixl over the summer so that they don't have that summer slump you know what you're actually bringing up a really good um a really good question here um and it's something that actually came up last night when we were in an education committee meeting um am i about to speak about that that question about you know parents and and their access so just so

064that everyone knows i mean tell your friends you know with all of your parents right um you actually have access to ixl um i didn't realize that piece last night mr gloom and sign but yeah parents currently have access to it so they can see where where their students are they can also you know you know encourage their own kids to get on there and do some work as well as far as the summer time goes i'll have to work alongside mr chisholm to figure out exactly when it is we need to do a rollover because um there's some rot stirring that needs to happen so you know we got to figure out the exact date that we can keep the kids open for it's probably gonna be like sometime in like late july or

065something like that but then we gotta switch them to the next class so so the answer yes but i'm not going to show you how great yeah i'm being told they can just log on anytime my daughter used it all last summer okay so it shouldn't be an issue there should be no interruption of uh excellent it sounds good yeah awesome awesome you guys gonna come to the rest of my presentations and i remember last week [Music] it wasn't like when it got announced it wasn't like a monetary thing to do so how do we know that everything is accurate uh we'll have to have another kind of conversation about that because i wasn't one of the students that took the isl so my results aren't in there so where do i know where i

066end up in the academics i would have to look at you know i don't know your name on top yeah i'm gonna you know specifically situations james thank you for that presentation on behalf of the board we definitely want to recognize and celebrate the hard work of the teachers into doing it with your leadership looking over that so thank you i think no i i was thinking about this last night i've been on the board for seven years and you talked about that like we had foundational issues when we first came on board with that data you know i think that might be part of the problem with the high school that goes back to when those kids were in elementary school to some degree so i would expect that this what you're seeing now

067will probably you have to be patient it'll translate you know with time so yeah that's that's so more work can't be done there but i i i all the teachers are working hard and we talked long about that last night and i appreciate you know you emphasizing that and uh you know putting those things in context yeah okay all right are you ready for the next presentation should i sit down so you can call me back up again all right this one's a lot shorter i promise all right um so and there's not as many numbers um so so we do all kinds of professional development here in audubon we do it all the time right i mean we have an in-service this friday there's some professional development but it's more like working professional development

068um and you know one of the things that um you know because there's different types for different people at different parts of their career you know we have a lot of different professional development documents so what dr davis asked me to do is and and you know i mean it's pretty smart pull it all together right just have one document to to rule them all right so um so ultimately what we piece together is the audubon public school district's professional development guide it is a working document to guide and capture professional development efforts so why do we need a document like that this right i mean this is you know why would we do this well there's a lot of reasons um a big one is to ensure that we are meeting the mandates of

069the state there are certain things that are mandated by the state hiv training seizure training um you know so uh so there's all kinds of things and there's different hours associated with each one and at different frequencies so we have to make sure that we're doing all those things um it creates a single place for everyone to find the documents that they need you know most professional development does filter through my office so for me it's just like oh well it's in this folder that folder well that's you know that's great but you know like we need to have a single place for everyone to get this stuff um it allows for clarity and consistency and it also allows us to archive the work that's been done so this is what the state says about

070it when you go to the state website dealing with professional development they have all kinds of information there um i only pulled two sentences off because i thought that these kind of gave a good overview i did highlight certain parts just because that was kind of like the meat of these very wordy sentences that they have so it speaks to relevant and timely professional learning experiences both individualized and collaborative and says how they're integral to the educator life cycle and necessary for continued professional growth so i mean that speaks to a lot of things i'm going to talk about in a little bit um you know when you think about that educator life cycle i already mentioned you know we have some folks that are brand new like just coming into the profession and then

071we have some other folks i've been teaching for like 30 years they have different needs right um you know so we had the whole spectrum there um and then uh this is the the next piece of what the the state says so educators engage in sustained professional learning to refine and expand their practice in order to help students perform at higher levels that last part for me is probably the most important part i mean at the end of the day that's why we're here right like ultimately the whole idea of school is to help students grow and become better right so that's a big piece and and you know when in the design of much of our professional development that's the cornerstone of what it is that we use to design the the process moving

072forward all right so talk about the educator life cycle new teachers all kinds of stuff here right so we have new teacher orientation in this document and this document was shared with the committee last night but we have the new teacher orientation agenda having it housed here allows us to have consistency year over year because every year we always learn new things so um so i've been doing this for a little while now and each year i learned something new but one of the most important things i learned about was you know a lot of times for a brand new teacher some of the learning isn't necessarily about the instruction because they have other things to overcome like where's the copier where should i go to eat where should i park right there's very practical

073things like how do i get into my email so all those practical things are really important alongside of this is how you run a good classroom right all of these things come together because if the teacher doesn't feel secure and confident in their place here then they're going to be focused on something other than the kids in front of them and that's really where we need their focus to be so it's it's not just about the professional development it's about bringing them on board um there's other things we have in there we talk about mentoring requirements let me go over mentoring in a little bit um the in-service cycle so um you know you know out of my office we we tend to operate in a lot of cycles um i know a lot of

074you have heard me talk about the curriculum revision cycle and that's just where we revise about you know 25 or so of the curriculum every year so that the curriculum always stays up to date we have a site we're starting to cycle through now uh the uh the purchasing of different resources so we focused heavily on math we're going to look a little bit of social studies um some world language and we continually move that around so we have good resources for our teachers to use well another cycle that we're engaged in is the in-service cycle so you know the very beginning of the year there are certain things that they just need to happen there's certain mandates that we have to do um there's certain mandated pd um this year you know one of

075the focuses dealt with um aligning lesson plan objectives and then and then um you know then just giving teachers time for preparation a big piece of the beginning of the year is teachers just need to get into their classroom and they need to set stuff up because the next day or two they're going to have a whole bunch of kids coming in and they've got to be ready for that right and then the next part the next day we dealt a lot with technology updates so mr chisholm um you know he was in the spotlight on those days where he was actually working through a lot of technology pieces we also do things like um dcpmp training affirmative action training hiv and then again just more teacher prep this part here deals a little bit

076more these are in-services dealing more specifically with curriculum and instruction so the way that the in-services are placed throughout the course of the year there's a lot of thought that goes into it i mentioned that this friday teachers are going to be looking at data that's the second time this year they're doing it the first year they did the first time they did it in october with data that was you know these are new kids in their class these are new kids to these teachers they need time to figure out where these kids are as learners so that they can from there figure out like okay what should the groups be what are they what do these students need the most but then mid-year we got to touch base on that data again and that's

077a big piece of what's going to happen so that's a big thing that's happening on on friday at the high school we're taking a look at final exam revisions so that's going to be an important piece since we have been able to give traditional final exams because of pandemic so two years later you know things have changed so they need time to revise those final exams and then later on this year we have one more and i know it seems late in the year to be having some kind of an in-service but at that in-service that's where we take a look at new resources where we're going to be taking a look at things like pacing guides where we're going to be doing things to plan out the work that happens over the summer i

078know that the school year goes from september to june but there's a lot of work that happens in july and august so ultimately a lot of the stuff that's identified over in in april that stuff is going to be worked on throughout the course of the summer all right meeting state mandates so um you know within this guide what we have is the chart that helps us to identify how often folks need to take certain professional development courses every year teachers have to do right now we're using public school works there's a series of videos that they have to watch in order to make sure that they're staying up to date on on the trends dealing with i'm going to use hiv as an example this is also a place to house all the forms

079you know when you work in a school district you realize that there's all kinds of forms to fill out right just like any kind of organization so things dealing with professional development if a teacher wants to go to some kind of conference well this is a place where it'll be housed um you know when we have to set up payments for mentors that form is going to be housed here as well you know there's all kinds of things that we need to make sure that we have the appropriate information on so that people get paid that people can go to the right the right professional development and you know this is that one consistent place to find it so the mentoring plan every year we get the mentoring plan um we get it um approved

080by the board of ed um i can't remember which month we do that in now the mentoring plan was actually it was here before i got here and then each year we sort of just update it a little bit because you know these are the kinds of documents that need to be maintained over time so the mentoring plan is housed here as well um you know there's all kinds of information in that mentoring plan to help guide the mentor and the the new teacher as well some things to keep in mind this is a living document and what i mean by that is it's something that continually needs to be updated so i mentioned earlier that we are archiving um the different agendas that we use throughout the course of the year um that's helpful

081year over year to really figure out like oh what do we do that one time you know how do we set it up that other time so ultimately as we go through the year while we might have a plan for each of the in-services the specific agenda you know that's really released usually about a week or two prior to the end service so that gives the the specifics of where people need to be when they need to be there who's going to be running what and all that kind of stuff so anyway that stuff gets added throughout the course of the year one of the other nice things about this too is that it allows for us to have flexibility and consistency at the same time you know um you know if you don't house

082things in a single location what you end up with is a document that gets updated but then someone pulls an old version of the document and then they're submitting to the ba um you know an old version of the document and then you know debbie's contacting me saying hey you know like what is this about i'm like oh i don't know i don't know where the document came from so anyway house all in one place it makes it um easier for organizations to mention all right i told you that was a little bit quicker so questions about professional development okay all good thank you very much everybody [Applause] okay next i'd like to invite mr chisholm for the technology assessment and adjustment plan all right good evening everybody i know we have seen some great

083content here and that will be the only slide from me tonight i have a wonderful display behind me if anybody would like to verify or validate what i'm about to explain to you so my job here as the technology director is to over this last 11 months was to evaluate what we have in our buildings find our stumbling blocks and try and remove them from the direction of our teachers efforts in the last 11 months we've identified quite a few areas i will not go through all of those in detail i did have a discussion with the board i will focus on the premise of the document and then the goals and objectives set forth in that document so the areas that we identified are hardware we identified some physical security locations some digital security

084information we also went through and tried to identify things that are in the classroom as well as exist in the cyber part of what we're going to do tonight is apply a little bit of corrective action to those items that are identified and that's where we're going to start right now the corrective action starts out with understanding your total cost of ownership and making sure that you know what that is understanding what the audubon technology systems are made up of and their total costs their maintenance and the usage of such hardware and software the goals and objectives for my team is to try and make them efficient and effective all right so with our inventory goals and managing and maintaining a proper hardware is to use systems in our that are available to us both

085on the free and open source and cost effective platform we use things like mojo which is about a thousand dollars for us to use per year it allows us to track and maintain all of our service requests that come from our teachers who are doing a great job uh under the um the the slate uh detriment of some older equipment they're actually performing very well if you had taken a look at mr uh burp's slide they are performing and delivering good effective content and meaningful content uh we're just going to try and help them do it a little more efficiently so with that inventory or of it with the the mojo ticketing system it allows us to track all those service requests it allows us to culminate those requests at the end of the year

086try and find things that are not working well try and find ways to solve that problem and then build a plan for implementation along with the service requests we are going to be using a free and open source platform called snipeit it costs us nothing to use this platform that's where the cost effective comes in and we can track everything from a consumable toner all the way up to a million dollar piece of hardware if necessary so this will allow us to not only track the hardware in one single location but it will also allow us to build plans for five year and to make sure that the hardware and peripheral items are being cared for on a monetary standpoint my final goal for the service requests and the hardware inventory is basically to build

087us a uniform classroom or a model classroom that classroom would be set up identically throughout the buildings still allowing the teacher the flexibility of their own teaching styles but giving them the efficiency of walking into a room plugging into one location having all of their hardware connected their display panels and their content and information being right there forefront allowing them to get directly to the students needs and the tasks at hand so again efficiency being the benefit the security goals of both physical and through cyber is to unify our door and security systems allowing the systems to be controlled by a single location from multiple people if necessary and making sure that we have unilateral control across all of the buildings keeping our students safe keeping those who we need to keep out out and

088those that we need to let in in that physical security is something that was identified through uh conversations with the maintenance department and uh mr rutter who also agrees that that would be beneficial across the district and the bond helps us offset that uh by being part of that build out we will know quantifiable dollars for all of these initiatives when we start to get into the nuts and bolts of the bond and where dollars can be spent for the cctv and our security systems to go along with our door entry we're going to reevaluate the equipment that we have try and purchase equipment that is current new and is integratable can be integrated with our alarm systems as well as our entry systems to again unify those security systems to keep our students safe

089first and foremost and our staff along with that is our cyber security we have already started that endeavor by implementing a product called lightspeed that lightspeed product has taken some of the stumbling blocks out of information being blocked unnecessarily or being caught up in categories so that teachers have access to more content students are not being held back from content but we are able to filter out the misinformation and some of those sites that aren't reputable and by that bringing some of the more reputable information to the surface along with those steps we're going to initiate and do our best to provide integration is not just about installing a piece of hardware and making sure it functions but providing the staff member with the necessary information to make it function well to be efficient and

090effective when you hand a device over to a teacher you shouldn't expect because they're an educated individual educating others that they have the all-encompassing knowledge of touch it and now i know everything so you want to make sure that along with the endeavors of mr burkham what he explained about the professional develop that we provide the time and the information along with that installation to help them in that endeavor for content delivery and access to information with the budget corrective action again it all comes down to the dollars and cents of what we can spend what we will have to figure out on the far side and what we will need to make plans for in the future to correct and be able to sustain the five-year rotation of hardware the implementation of new software

091when curricular needs arise and making sure that we have done so in a meaningful way where the dollar spent is not a wasteful dollar so i tried to get through that expeditiously i know that we've been here for a little bit and a lot of good content has come through i will open it up to questions and i will also elaborate on any one of the subjects that you have mike i would just like to say a couple things uh first off the report that you put together for us was um you know honest uh concise and for someone who's technologically deficient as i am myself i understood everything that you were saying so i got the big picture and enough of the details to you know understand what the problems were so i appreciate

092you taking the time to put together that report some of the comments that other board members have made i know they feel the same way also you gave a lengthy summary of the report last night i would suggest if possible you could do that with the operations committee at some point i think it would be really good for them to hear you talk about things that you talked about with us last night from an operation standpoint and i'd just like to reiterate one of the things i brought up last night which was you know this was a really good report on identifying all of the problems i would hope and expect that the next step is to you know come up with a plan on what the priorities are what they're going to cost and

093how we're going to do it so i know that you'll be having those discussions with the administration in their near future um and maybe as we iron those out and we get through the end of this year i don't know when we could have that done but another presentation or another report on exactly you know what we should what we can expect what we can accomplish and when um so so the purposes of what we're putting together here is to lay that that good foundation uh in order for us to be able to step off into a five-year plan with a meaningful goal to put together a five-year plan currently with the bond being so new and fresh and not have been quantified in the areas where it's going to be expended would be a

094bit remiss i could have basically given you a lot of information that made you feel good about it but come june 35 to 40 of it would have been hey we were able to do these things but it wouldn't have had a long-term meaningful effect it would have been one of those things where we achieved goals sooner than we expected and although that makes for a great presentation uh it doesn't make for longevity um i would be a little remiss if i did not mention uh you know the display behind me uh the newest machine on that table is from may 22nd of 2013. it's literally stamped on the machine as the manufacturer's date the technicians in this district have done quite a job with very little and i have to say as uh as

095a person who've been in technology for the better part of 20 years or more it's not something you see every day when you have a phone system that was manufactured 23 years ago still fully functional although time is definitely at its doorstep and you have mr smith who has been here as a student as well who probably used some of the equipment that he is now servicing it's a testament to their to their capabilities and and doing a fine job with what they were able to accomplish uh with very little speaking from us so um i've that's what i've been hearing for so long you know we're making it work but i think the time has come you know that we need to move forward and that's not good enough anymore so you're prepared you

096know you you laid that out and i appreciate that and looking forward to uh turning a corner you know an autobot and leading that you know to bring us up to speed and then have a plan for the future so thank you so the plane is the endeavor thank you anybody else any other questions no okay thank you thanks so much [Applause] okay moving on may i please have a motion to approve the following minutes january 5th rework public session reorganization january 8th public session retreat january 19th public and executive session january 26 public and executive session motion second mrs ron case roll call please mrs davis yes mr miller yes mr crew yes this is robinson yes mr ryan yes this is food chicken yeah this is cassidy yes this is cox yes this

100only please come to the microphone kelly tomeo 625 third avenue can you guys hear me okay um dr davidson board members i'd like to speak to you about the goals that you guys are set for um prior to 2020 audubon state thank you is 100. um [Music] is that better yeah yeah okay um anyway so far bound state ranking was 100 uh in 2020 prior to the pancake and i'm not quite sure how we're ever going to get back to that even though he's listening to mr burr's hesitation i'm not quite sure um getting back to a better ranking or even getting our high school students caught up to leaders i think it is a really big week um i've seen emails going out literally this piece here for extra help for school for study

101clubs or seminars and i'm not quite sure what we're doing presently as we've been doing to get our kids caught up the students have been having multiple study halls and not enough in-person instruction and they definitely need the summer education programs the math package to reading package so my solution we need more communications with the parents and education and letting kids stay in schools after school to work in groups whether it's a study club groups peer tutoring let the honor society join in or just offering kids extra credit in classes to help offer extra help to other kids we need to engage the kids more cultural responsive training how does this actually help our children academically i would like to eventually get a response to that and if i could have a copy of the

102curriculum over that we need to focus on classic education subjects meaning writing and and stop wasting time on social justice subjects our kids are failing academically number two you avoid cost-effective budget budgets as cultural responsive training crossing as of now twenty two thousand dollars that's not needed also uh extra money on calculators every child has a calculator on their phone and they currently do use their phones in classrooms as a tool solutions i can think of are tutoring or utilizing again that honor society saving money and kids working together in all grades again between two kids your third goal to foster positive school climate teachers should not be teaching their opinion of activism politics medical or religion and there hasn't been any trade classes in our schools coming to the schools solutions rewarding all positive

103behavior and character building leading the medical and all other issues out of it inviting more trade schools along with our colleges and currently we have no colleges or trade schools coming in the very near future not this month or next month there's so many opportunities to keep don't need a college diploma for and we need to expose our kids to everything available last but not least lunches we have moby ray i know that we've cleaned the representation of what our lunches are and they are not we have kids sending us pictures from school multi-food expired milks expired juices if we just allow our kids to purchase lunch would be instead of free lunches with the quality of the food would be better having three children already go through this school's district i know what this

104school is capable of i'd really like to see us get back to that and build on that with everything that we already know i really think i need to hold all of you accountable the board has a balance of power to and leaders and work together in meeting these goals and getting things right thank you for your time [Applause] would anyone else like to make a public comment on agenda items only please note the agenda item that you're making a comment on um bullying and the math issues those are the two that i'm going to be discussing my name is patricia klein my address is 15 neville court in school i have a couple questions based on bullying i heard the information that said we need to do better here in bullying so one question

105i would like to ask if a student wears a mask and another student doesn't want to wear a mask and the person with the mask attacks the person that doesn't is that classified as bullying if a person doesn't want to get a vaccination and the other person has a vaccine and they want to breathe on the person to make the person sick is that classified as bullying critical race theory to teach someone to dislike themselves because they're a white male or they should be responsible for what their ancestors did many many years ago is that classified as bullying the reason i asked that particular question because i want to say a quote from dr martin luther king jr we should not be judged on the color of our skin but the content of our character

106we need to stop teaching and bringing division among people because one is colored dark and the other one is light there is only one human race one human race i also have some questions concerning the math the numbers didn't look great at all and i'm trying to correlate the winter the fall and the winter where the numbers off because the fall was remote and the winter was in person i don't know that answer i'm asking you and if it was it should have been mentioned in the presentation why was that left out that was important if it was i also want to say to say something this state says teach sex education to five-year-olds sex education to five-year-olds it's not sex education it's pornography to five-year-olds let's stay focused on math let's teach our students

107english math science history social studies not sex education how to perform sex i had sex education classes in school and i wasn't taught how to perform sex this is not sex education five-year-olds are you kidding me a kindergarten teaching them how to have sex perform sex with one another masturbate your time is up thank you thank you any other comments on agenda items okay please have a motion to close the public comment section all in favor aye any opposed uh you want to start with the first set of comments regarding the goals um i think there's some things in there that uh we could address the comments in regards to education that's extra credit i know um mr mayo has participated in some of our pandemic response committee meetings and is aware of different pieces

108and presentations our esser grant has not been approved yes or apr i'm actually looking forward to that so to send out one to the community members we're waiting anxiously to start some of those programs after school programs tutoring programs support finding out what the faculty and staff are interested in um so some of those concerns about uh well some of the ideas about um peer tutoring using national honor society and things of that nature they're all part of that plan so we're we're waiting to implement we need the monies to be approved and then those conversations can move forward not conversations actions so they're all good um good ideas and they're all part of the plan so they don't even have a timeline it's at the state level so the county has to approve and

109then it goes to the state so it's a little bit different than some of the other grants some of the grants if you're doing uh title one they say they're substantially improved which means at that point uh once the grant's submitted you can start extending those monies so we're waiting for the approval could you in the meantime maybe look at some things possibly to get started is it possible to have national honor society students for example you volunteer they um any response or comment regarding the lunches we continue to go through i mean i i will follow through and i have followed through with our nature serve representative i've gone down and done spot visits myself i can have the administrators do that as well what's being reported is not necessarily what i'm seeing when

110i go i think sometimes there may be a maybe a good idea to actually share with the students what they're allowed to get within that lunch line so they truly have an understanding of you know you can get two fruits a fruit and vegetable uh two veggies if you like you can get a juice you can get a milk that's all part of it's available and a lot of the descriptions are from the high school level they're um they're a valid one there's grab and go so i can work with miss ventus to make sure that the students understand what's available as far as uh she's very responsive if there's a parent uh the guardian caregiver student that has concerns she's very responsive so you know reach out to miss ventus um is there any

111idea well so right now the lunches are for free you know they're paid for by the government uh is there any um idea of that and whether or not that's going to continue if so for how long do you think that has any wheat or impact on some of the concerns that people have shared about lunches or do you think the problem is bigger than that i don't think it's directly related to nutriserve in regards to the quality there is sometimes supply chain issues i think we're all still seeing those in different areas but the food quality you know miss mentions and her team do a wonderful job um and want to provide lunches that the kids want to eat so okay regarding bullying and math is there anything that you would like does anyone

112else have any questions or comments regarding the bullying and the math anything that you would like to respond to we're going through and doing you know a lot of work in regards to looking at our programs and we're moving forward providing student parent and staff support in regards to that area so everybody understands not only um in the direct pieces there were direct questions in regards to face masks and vaccination status i know that the the letter that i have drafted for tomorrow in regards to mask after i make a statement tonight actually kind of addresses that we've addressed it at a building level with the faculty and staff to make sure everybody really truly understands you know we all get to make different choices and that choices aren't and should stay that way and

113people need to be respectful and that's that vaccination status and mass so right thank you okay all right moving on to committee reports first with governance uh there is nothing to report right now i think we have a meeting next month does anybody have any questions or comments for governance okay moving on to operations i recognize mrs cox thank you mr blumenstein we did have a meeting uh february 9th and a quite busy meeting as you can see on the agenda the bonds uh the sale of the bonds and the bids did come in on february 8th and we're approving for it's on the agenda um to acknowledge the good results um and uh by the end of the month we hope we will have the monies in our account which is a good thing

114so then that leads to our discussion about the bond construction timelines all the players uh bob garrison our architect but and whoever would be in whatever building necessary to be there they will get a timeline based on priority based on availability of items and a lot of things um just fyi the hvacs we were told are 40 weeks out so that's kind of crazy but this is the supply chain that we're in right now so we know that they will be ordered just not sure when the scope of work will be done um let's see there are some things that were not on the bond that we will be getting into the works relatively soon which will be controls which are good um there's been some vandalism in the bathrooms quite extensive vandalism in the

115bathrooms again so that's very disconcerting and there was a conversation about possibly some character education amongst the school um of course right now we're in the development of the budget 2022 2023 so there's meetings with all the stakeholders the department heads the adjustment for the tuition for money from we're going to take a little bit of a hit for that because we uh um anticipated more children than what actually were written down or locked that had come so that's uh upsetting um and then we're taking we have a a reprieve from healthcare for the month of february from the state employees health benefits program which is a wonderful thing so we can read a little bit easier and see what else and then there's a possible shared grant opportunity with the borough for a green

116green space so that's exciting also we talked about uh possibly pushing for a playground grant if we can do that as well to continue to facilitate our playgrounds and get them up to speed of this maybe some green in that as well so our next meeting well uh we were hoping for the state aid to be announced on the 24th but the governor is going to get his address on march 8th which would mean that we might get the information on the 10th um so not quite sure when our meeting next meeting will be sometime in march before our next meeting but we might turn up two meetings prior to the board meeting but um that's all i have to report at this time dr davis did anything to lend there's a couple motions uh

117number eight you know i like to acknowledge at the bottom was sold at 2.87 we uh earned a favorable reading key areas include is really a positive community environment the people want to raise their children in audubon and that impacts our rating overall and it's also our ability to demonstrate favorable budgeting practices over the last three years really impact impact our rating so we are meeting and looking to move forward with some of those improvements that the bond is going to afford us number nine as i said in the ssds school security drills on january 10th the governor signed public law 2021 it's chapter 3 365. there are two important notice requirements in the new law that have to deal with one school districts must provide notifications to parents or guardians of a student enrolled

118in the district following the completion of the school security drill so i'm going to send out a notice to families specifically the school security drills tomorrow that which by no later than the end of the school day in which the security drill is conducted that they need to be notified these notices don't include fire drills it's more of the security drills where we're doing lockdowns and other practices the second part to it is one is notice so parents know the second part is that the drills need to be clear and developmentally age appropriate there were some school districts that were practicing drills um you know you have officers in in the building which is which is great but there's other pieces we weren't practicing any drills where there were bloods or bombs going off or

119explosions or noises but that was occurring we weren't we won't and starting tomorrow we'll start that piece as far as if we happen to have any of those specific drills that there'll be a statement that goes out to the families of those schools so although we weren't practicing anything like that you can see that potentially there were some concerns since this is a new and the children will go through it for the first time will there be some advanced training for the children to help them prepare as well they're really not new drill practices we weren't doing any drills where there were blood or there was bombs or noises going off so the drills themselves the students are aware of what we do in lockdowns because of the pandemic we've been practicing those those drills

120differently typically if you had a lockdown in this room it's tough you want to be in the location where people can see you so you probably go in that back room and every would everyone would huddle together and the lights would be down and you pull the screens down although we talk about those now we don't actually practice them as partially because we're wearing masks and we need to keep socially distanced those have not been changed but when we move forward with we you know we'll continue so the drill practice for us hasn't really changed it's really the notification for us now there were some districts that were practicing and they wanted to make sure kids were aware and staff were aware and they had other practices in place we weren't doing that we don't

121plan on doing that we continue to run our drills as per code so you're doing the middle basically with the maximum uh developmentally and age appropriate we would we didn't feel that that was happening and we does anybody have any questions that are non-agenda i just had a comment for allison with any of the character training i was going to reiterate when i said andy earlier the rotary we have a lot of fun really trying to allocate to anything with the schools with the mental health or anything i think the character training would be right up that alley so if you need any help then just come see me and i'll be able to get a message [Music] i would just like to recognize mrs ron case um i think uh she has a lot

122of responsibility for the work that was put in to get these rates but you know before she came on board we had a lot of we had a lot of fixing to do you know systems the way that things were run we were behind on payments to health insurance that's well documented we were in a deep hole and to get to where we are that we can get rates like this as a result of what you said our you know our rating was good i mean this is [Applause] okay um may i please have a motion to improve items one through nine of your operations first and second second um any questions or comments related to agenda items okay this is ron case roll call please this is mr miller yes mr pro yes mrs

123robinson yes mr ryan yes this is dutrika yes this is cassidy yeah this is cox yes this is davis yes mr bloom is nice yes motion's passed okay thank you next we'll move on to education the shiva's not here tonight i'll be making the report we met last night we spent a great deal of time talking about the professional development plan and the technology plan and high excellent data so that was a large part of the agenda in addition to those um we talked about uh the curriculum revisions we're in year five of a five-year plan mr burke mentioned that or we're going to keep the wheels turning on that so um looking back i can remember that year one you know because him identifying several deficiencies and curriculums that had not been updated in

124a long time and uh so kudos to mr burke and to all the teachers that have worked on uh getting our curriculum up to date and now we're in a position where we can do that maintain that in a healthy way um the there is an equity council i don't know their official name but uh they have been meeting with rowan um throughout the year as a group uh they're preparing to you know start programming for the district for next year um i requested that uh if it was possible for them to make a presentation to us at some point towards the end of the year it's kind of like a reflection on what it is that they did exactly and what it is that they plan to do next year we talked about the

125preschool on tonight's agenda we're hiring a teacher for the preschool so that's good and we talked about expansion in the future i would like the operations committee to put that on their radar in terms of space that we may need in the future if our program continues to expand so you know i think that's an operations issue that is not uh immediate and urgent right now but something that will eventually become if we continue to expand that program and finally there was a discussion about a course in game design in place of a cad program we just talked about that briefly i think we need to dive into that a little bit more deeper you know one of the things that we talked about which was comment earlier was the need for more trade programs

126connections to trade schools i know that we've made connections with carpenters union so we're starting to do that i think we need to do more i know that the committee is behind that and um you know there are more we could be doing a better job with non-college career readiness and you know we need to we need to circle back on that and continue to talk about that so the education committee will continue to do that as we move throughout the year in addition to that we had a very brief discussion about sustainable jersey which is a statewide program for both towns and schools they have their separate programs but when the town and the school combine they have a greater chance of securing grants and things of that nature so mr peru is on

127the green team in audubon and we want to work to to build a stronger relationship with the borough and the green team in order to have a better chance of securing those grants and applying for those things in different programming so we don't have an official green team here it's something that we would like to look into we're going to continue to talk about that what that would look like how we can get students involved and move forward with that and allison you mentioned you know that there's some talk right now with the borough over playground and i mean that you know those are the things that we can do a better job of and we're going to continue to do that the playground has not if that's something that we want to pursue that's

128not something one day right in the works yeah so i think that if we you know if the education committee keeps talking about the sustainable jersey program a lot of that's going to overlap with operations you know so you know i think that that's we'll just keep that line of communication and keep talking about that um that's it from last night's meeting on tonight's agenda it's pretty standard we're approving some workshops and usage facilities home instruction yeah the ssds is in there we had that presentation tonight so does anybody have any questions for comments for the education committee i wanted to draw everyone's attention to number seven and the training that we're bringing in with stand tall stephen a bolar and how this kind of uh initiative should be looked at you know for a

129host in a variety of different needs that we may encounter yeah thanks dr davis you want to add anything to that or can you talk a little bit more about number seven well um mr cruz stated that you know the standpoint steve has to do with organizational skills and academics but it's also the importance of being involved so it's being presented at the high school so part of that has to do with being a member of the school community so when you talk about different things and operations there's the comment about bathrooms well it's our school we need to be involved we need to be engaged and feel a member and that has some responsibility for it so although it's talking about organization skills and academics being involved in the school community piece is all

130part of that presentation and as we go through and look at the agendas we will be bringing in additional trainings and supports as i stated earlier so i'm looking forward to that he was involved before mr polar did a presentation to faculty and staff it was an opening it's very very strong powerful we're looking forward to interacting with our kids any other questions or comments on non-agenda items this is rock case roll call please mr crew yes mrs robinson yes mr ryan mrs yeah this is cassidy yes this is cox yes this is davis yes mr miller yeah mr burnside yes all right thank you next i'd like to recognize mrs davis for human resources thank you mr blumenth human resources committee met um that evening february 15th um some of the things that we

131discussed in the meeting um we're actually really celebrating our achievements and staffing right now um you know the last couple of meetings it's been a little bleep when it's come to all the openings that we've had in our staffing but we're um we're seeing great progress in that just we're grateful for the collaborative brainstorming efforts um especially mrs cassidy some of the uh initiatives that she um spurred on especially through social media posts so very encouraging and we're looking forward to letting all of those positions go um we did have a discussion regarding part-time staff and the availability of benefits to part-time staff as well as moving part-time staff to becoming full-time staff members um you know i think i speak for the committee that's that's something that you would all like to see realized

132um but as everybody can imagine it's a major um it would have a potential major financial impact so it's something that we would need strategically it's something that that if the board you know wanted to move towards that goal as a whole we would need to lay out a plan over several years in order to achieve that as far as agenda items we have several staffing appointments which is great including long-term substitutes instructional aids and preschool aides we have some revisions to fmla requests we're appointing mr mcmichael as the 504 compliance officer we have a mentor teacher assignment there's a change in a student maintenance assistant there's just a confusion in a sibling team there's extracurricular activity assignments approvals for substitute teachers secretary secretarial substitutes custodial substitutes their spring coaching and volunteer approvals and i

133did catch on page 14. um mr harris's name um there's an extra letter in his name he's wonderful i'm not sure that that is the appropriate name for him so i'm just going to um dr davis did you have anything to ask i was going to make a comment in regards to the announcement so i mean the use of social media seems to be working for us i i know you you don't necessarily want to get on the blast and the tweets and instagram and facebook but um along with some help from the audubon community facebook page you can see we're starting to close that gap and the number of openings is is getting smaller so i think everybody for one creativity and then also the support so that's wonderful as well i will note

134as you were talking i was just going through and i just noticed another thing that really kind of resonates is the school family and uh people that have worked here for a while um even after they retire they come back and if you look at number 17 we have a couple of our retired teachers that are coming back to substitute so uh they liked it so much that they missed us and they want to be back and they wouldn't be part of the school community so i think that's the piece of law that's it for me for hr i just have one comment i'm glad to hear that the committee is talking about um you know full-time versus part-time i think that um that's uh you know making a commitment to people is probably one

135of the best things that we can do and so i'm glad that we're having that conversation i think it's been a long time since this sport and that goes before me you know had an honest conversation about that and looking forward to you know continuing that conversation so it's good to hear yeah and obviously that would be you know collaboration with operations yeah great okay any other comments or questions on non-agenda items for human resources okay um may i please have a motion to approve items 1 through 21. this is ron case roll call please this is robinson yes mr ryan yeah this is dude yeah this is cassidy this is cox yes this is davis yes mr miller yes mr crew yes mr bloom is signed yes motion's passed okay thank you next dr

136davis the hip report and superintendent's report yeah so you can see on here we have several hiv reports there's a total of seven in the high school three were confirmed as hiv and then four were confirmed as non-hiv mansion total of three one confirmed and two it really i think what happens when we go through and talk is you know we really look to see as i stated earlier patterns and supports so those trainings are really necessary once again for our stakeholders as far as the superintendent's report i'd like to state that today our students in grades three through five and then six through twelve took the school climate survey from new jersey department of ed and then there are questions from the school of character our junior senior high school students will be retaking

137one of the questions is how this it was coded we're going to have the full faculty and staff for reviewing those responses during the in-service day this is the first and several steps to identify our strengths and our weaknesses so we may move forward and continue to grow and excel as a school community parents and caregivers should watch out for invites that participate in similar events and for possible community work that will hold true to some of our older students as well the other i'm not wearing my face mask right now because i know for some of this the community members it's better to be able to see our uh our mouths and it also helps with articulation many of you know on february 14th the governor uh alluded to lifting the mass mandate as

138of march 7th um our public school the audubon public school district pandemic response team the nursing team and administrative team have met to discuss preliminary plans for the district if conditions support this lift at this time the recommendation would be to make mass optional in most school environments we still are considering contact tracing day six through ten for positive students high density areas and there's a few other items that we really need to consider um if we were to make mass optional i'm gonna send the general notice tomorrow to the communities and families tomorrow and then we'll share more concrete uh plans most likely next week or the following we're meeting on tuesday with the nurses and the administrative team we meet weekly with the nurses we were doing bi-weekly but we really need to

139come up with some clear but flexible definitions in regard for regards to what that would look like so as i said the recommendation was to make mass optionals in most of our environments last but not least i recognize my team members my colleagues mr burke and mr chisholm for their work although um maybe through my guidance and support because their work and effort to come up and then also their work with the faculty and staff there's a lot of people that were involved so not only them but everyone that supported them to review one technology plan to the professional development plan there's a lot of work that goes on the skips are involved the you know the instructional counseling is involved everybody's involved in a sense as we go through pd and then obviously the

140ixcl work that's really a tribute to the faculty and staff the students themselves for the work they did and then also our parents and caregivers because they provided support as well okay thank you uh any comments from board members mr crew i'd like to say uh thank you to ms davis amy for the approach to transitioning these from part time to full time and go on the record is supporting that as well yeah again that's early stages you know don't want to get ahead of ourselves it's just that we're talking about it what it would look like it's going to take inventory you know look at the positions costs and all those things so very early stages yes i'll go further and say i i applaud the multi-year approach to this as well it we'll

141see you know that's part of it um okay any other comments from board members okay before we move the public participation oh i'm sorry yeah sorry joe your first first report here um so joe do you have anything to report for ed services um nothing really we had our first my first meeting with him and we discussed the county budget and that was approved and that was all that we discussed in that meeting yeah thanks for taking that on that's a good group of people you'll meet different people there from all over the county new board members veteran board members it's great okay this is davis for school boards so um county school board meeting is tonight obviously we weren't able to attend that so um i'm hoping to be able to get a little

142background on that because the topic they were speaking to was um esser funding so hopefully i can get some information from that just to reiterate our training is set for um our joint training of non-ephraim is set for february 28th we'll be here um in the media center we're gonna gather at 6 30 so we're really looking forward to that ethics training with terry lewis and um you should be receiving the board of bed self evaluation weekly highlights for me i didn't send one this week because i thought they were a little inundated with emails and things you have to read through so week three and week four will be combined um but i hope that's been helpful to everybody um okay um and thank you to everybody for signing up for the various stakeholder

143meetings i really appreciate everybody filling those in jim did send out a cover letter to each one of those organizations so they understand the attention behind us being at the meetings and the collaborative effort that we're we're trying to establish so that's great um the only other thing i wanted to just as just as a board member just comment i really liked having um mr chisholm's presentation ahead of time um and i just i wondered if going forward if we could have all of the presentations like even the one that um they repeated for us tonight i just it was just excellent to be able to take time to come through it and digest it and formulate questions rather than having to synthesize everything on the spot so if we can try to make that

144a normal practice from now on i i know i personally appreciate that um and then i did happen to see in one of the publications from school boards that i received this week that in the 22-23 school year the board is boards of ed are going to be required to have student representatives on the board we sort of have that with the student council representatives but i just i want to look into that a little bit more um because it sounded like that student should be staying for the whole board meeting they would not have voting rights and they wouldn't go into executive session with us but um i don't know if that would be another person in addition to the student council member or that student council member could serve the same goal so

145i'm going to take a look into that because i thought that was an interesting piece of legislation that was passed and hopefully will spur on other young students to maybe aspire to be for members of the future to give them that little bit of experience i wanted to comment on what you said about the student representatives amy in the past we have had that very active student representatives and one in particular her name came across me and i lost it but she was very very interested very interesting very collaborative both of us and really brought the high school at the high school level brought that um gave us some working sense of what the kids were are dealing with up here so it was very very for the board at the time it was very

146um funny so thank you okay um before we move on to public participation i would like to make a motion to take a three-minute break uh before we do that i need to excuse myself all right all those in favor aye all right so uh just a few just a few minutes yes um okay uh having called the meeting back to order we will move on to the second public comment session um please keep in mind uh the statement that i made at the front of the meeting regarding public comment um it's in the agenda if anyone wants to review it um we have a clock up here please be conscious of that uh and when your time is up please respect that so with that being said if anyone would like to make a

149bonds and you will all pay for the harm you have caused upon the children of audubon thank you [Applause] okay thank you mr smith can we make sure that the timer is working sorry mr spencer good evening dr davis and fellow board members my name is [Music] good evening dr davis from fellow board members my name is bethany alexander and i'm in fifth grade 213 west michelson road i'm a good kid and i respect my authorities but lately not just my teachers but other adults as well have been acting ridiculous they are losing my respect and respect other kids i want to tell you about a few examples of what has been going on inside a school concise school in my perspective a few weeks ago i had an assembly and of course the teachers

150told us to separate at least three to four feet one of my fellow classmates was testing the teachers on what they would say if she moved closer to me which i had no problem with so she slowly scooted from three feet to two feet and two feet to one foot of course the teachers have to do what they're told so the teachers told her to separate from me in my opinion it is hysterical when people go crazy over the virus at least in my experience it isn't even as bad as my allergies here's another example of that i was at i was at outside recess right before we went outside one of the teachers on lunch duty calmly explained that we have to keep our masks on outside really i thought that was ridiculous we're

151going outside this is ridiculous my sister had a regular cold and flu after we hiked over my teeth my sis the cold and flu were so much worse for her and for me now when i go outside we have to wear masks i did i i mean i heard teachers practically screaming to tell kids to keep their masks on but over 19 isn't scary my school counselors told me about three times to pull my mouse up and i ignored her until she called me over she said bethany does your mouth not fit no office if it's fine then why are you pulling it down because i don't want to wear it outside i'm sorry you have to whatever i'm mumbled because this is ridiculous the reasons i'm sharing these examples with you are is because

152they're still going on when they shouldn't be these are just a few things that are going on around in school and i also add that many of my class members are fed up with this all these actions of separating us in mass are ridiculous and need to stop we kids think it's ridiculous and the authorities that try to make us are losing my respect some have some of them have already lost respect for me and i know many kids that agree don't require us to wear mass anymore thank you for your time dr davis [Applause] thank you [Music] or maybe just move she hit two sides two minutes and fifty seconds got it nicely done thank you thank you very much hi i'm a woman i am a jeep horse more letters peter jackson dr

15830 10 o'clock at night this is my daughter's bedtime thank you before we move on to the next comment i'd like to remind everybody that uh as per our current policy we will take all the comments and then address those that we're going to address tonight once the public comment session is closed would anyone else like to make a public comment hi i'm samantha mccloskey from incredible audible jersey i went to paul vi my freshman year three people here know them when i transferred back my grades dropped my gpa dropped my class right dropped i got a call from a college monday saying your gpa is .1 below what we accept here i'm sorry you're no longer even available for the volleyball scholarship we were looking at you for what are you going to do

159a year and a half me and my mother had fought thought endlessly to get this fixed mag and religion do not go hand in hand why would you emerge that's a thing very good good evening board members my name is dominic perry i live at i live in lincoln county from new jersey i like this i would like to start the night by asking you you were members of question in your own opinion do you believe playing sports for this school is a privilege first of all i would like to give you my input on this question i do believe it is a privilege to play at this high school there are about 10 student athletes with their consent i've seen their grades and they don't meet the requirements to continue any extracurricular activities for

160example sports and i've asked them the same question do you personally believe if you were failing your classes that you would still be playing that sport in that season just as i thought i got the same response from every single one of them that they would still be playing it states in new jersey's handbook section four class e paragraph one and two it states students need to have 12 and a half percent 15 credits meant your mid-year to be eligible for the sports in that session students have to be holding a c average i was having a constructed conversation or argument with another classmate or parent and he threatened me if i stood up here and stood for what i wanted he told me that other student athletes will come find me and personally beat

161me up or possibly kill me if i had covet i'm not still asking myself if i had covered i would have to quarantine but then it be and you would do a contract chasing that moment but seeing this year i've seen multiple students from wrestling and football have been told mid-game that you were positive but were not escorted out was not any contract racing was done thank you my name is dominic giordano 400 west nicholson road i'm a junior at algon high school how would all of you feel sending your children to a school which they deem is unsafe myself along with numerous other students view the school in this way due to many aspects from the lack of support from the staff how do you expect us to feel safe in a school when

162there are harassment and bullying cases that are never justified the answer is we can't we can't entirely feel safe in this school anymore some kids are even afraid to go to the bathroom outside of the gym why because there's spikes you have to time it and you have to dodge them or else you'll get involved while the administration does relatively nothing to deal with these situations it seems as though the students are suffering the most what logic does it make to call down an hiv witness the victim and harasser all in the same period they're not supposed to know that each other are there the entire grade knows who reported it due to the lack of care this staff has along with the students you are not protected when you report those cases the school

163makes it known that you reported it now you become the next victim the students suffer consequences of the lack of protection by living in it for eight hours a day five days a week a member of the stars club was screaming at kids during their lunch period for not signing the hands that they gave out for their cause claiming that these students quote do not support anything star stands for ultimately deeming them as racist how ironic is it that the stars member also claims that they do not stand for any kind of discrimination or any kind of attacks against personal values and beliefs yet this person does the exact opposite and it's never addressed i can't even walk in the lunchroom without feeling the icy stairs i get while trying to get my food students

164should feel safe and protected by the entire staff and not just some teachers students should feel as though their voices are being heard and not disregarded especially in the situations which affect their life their confidence their mental health and their education students attending audubon feel the exact opposite as you can see in the survey numbers that you took this warning many students strongly say that they agreed that they would transfer out of audubon this might not show because on the survey and i have pictures the options for this question we're strongly disagree disagree neutral agree or strongly disagree again most of these students thought that second would strongly agree it's a shame that students feel like the staff or quote adults according to the survey purposely put this twice would you truly put your children

165in in this situation if not then why do the majority of students here have to deal with this every single day thank you good job uh once again patricia klein the address is 15 neville court in seoul tonight i just want to talk about the esser funds and also about a challenge that i want to challenge the board tonight the esser funds the ester funds are the elementary and secondary emergency relief for the so-called pandemic it says that audubon for the first esser you received may 2020 138 the second esser award you received was on december the 1st 2020 again 536 thousand dollars and esser 3 it says on march 1st 2021 you received 1.2 million dollars so you have received 1.8 million dollars in esser emergency funds and this is conditional and one of

166the conditions mass mandate so our children suffer for money follow the money wrong we should have never mandated or accepted any money to endanger our children let me just say something right now the children with the mass they are breeding in carbon dioxide poison many are suffering with headaches not being able to concentrate i can see why our numbers are going down as far as education is concerned our governor a couple days ago actually was on cnn and they were he was interviewed and he indicated that the mass mandate would be lifted on march 7th all right the mass that mandate march 7 is not good enough for us let me just say they asked him on cnn also was there any indication of why he may had this mandate did was there any benefits

167behind it governor murphy was unable to give us any kind of benefits at all we are one of 11 states that mandated mass the other 39 no mass mandate and they had better numbers than 11 that mandated a mask so tonight i challenge you all of you the board members before we leave tonight to create a resolution to remove the mask immediately effective tonight no longer do we need to mask our children there's no benefit behind it i know superintendent you said you're going to send out something tomorrow make it happen tonight why march the 7th thank you that's your challenge make it happen [Applause] again dominic giugano 400 west nicholson road junior at ottawa high school my other concern while viewing this meeting was the ixl diagnostic grades for the math portion specifically for

168the high school why can't you divide the grades to see what teachers are performing what they should be and meeting the skills that the students need to have why shouldn't we be able to see that and for two with the grade school you're able to split that up in the beginning of the year we saw that the students for second grade were lower than they were in first grade at the end and then at the end of second grade they got better but at the start of third they got worse and it was a repetitive process why are we not preparing students for the next year and years to come why are we preparing them just for the grade they're in and not trying to advance their skills even further to make them more advanced

169in the subject that they could be struggling in and where is the help that some of the students might need to further excel while there are some students who are sitting at the top of their class not needing help but there are students sitting at the bottom who aren't getting recognized and aren't getting the help they need why are we just preparing the kids and even in the high school why is it always prepared for just the next test shouldn't we be teaching these kids for life and not just to get past the next test so the teachers can meet their requirements to me that makes no sense thank you good evening hello everybody vanessa whalen 34 east pine street i want to first applaud all the kids for coming in today i know you

170know for adults it's a lot and you guys are appreciated for doing what you've done um i really wasn't going to speak today but then i saw this when i came in the door and it said library media center closed after school until further notice and i'm assuming it's probably because of the pandemic we've been talking a lot about education and what the kids are missing in the education and i think two years ago i brought up the fact that the parents would be willing to tutor support these kids and it wouldn't have been a financial hardship on anybody the school district wouldn't have had to do it we could have had the older kids that are in honor society tutoring children and nothing ever came of that nothing really ever came of anything we've

171discussed whether it was in the pandemic response team or in the board of enemies this is concerning i mean i remember going to school when i was younger many many years ago and the libraries where everybody studied that's where everybody went you could get tutoring there you could get together with your friends your friends could help you um that's not happening so i hope we have some resolutions and by all means the parents are here whether it's pta or whoever the teachers are here this isn't anything against the teachers well some of them but you know that's a whole other nightmare on my side um we appreciate the teachers we appreciate the teachers that actually want to do good for the students okay not just collect the paycheck but unfortunately i've had to deal with

172a couple of this this year um i'd like to address the lunch situation mr davis i appreciate that you do have gone and seen the lunches and i appreciate you sending me the pictures um but it seems like you're going in the beginning of lunch and i get it's time constraining um but recently manchin avenue school had chocolate milk dated 2013. so i'm not quite sure who missed that somewhere a long wine i'm not sure if you even heard about it but yeah 2013. moldy bread i was in the food service industry for a long time okay we had shelf life on everything and somebody was responsible for checking these things baldy bread moldy cookies meat that looks like it's been sitting out i don't know how long this is where we're discussing the fact

173that let's let us pay for the food we don't need the extra funds for food anymore if this is what you're giving the kids that probably eat one meal a day it's disgusting and i will pay for five kids lunches if i have to there are kids literally coming to school to eat that's all they eat all day we're giving them sugary cereal and we're giving them moldy bread i'm going to keep coming at that i'm going to keep following it i'm not letting it go they cannot be educated if they're hungry ever to anybody you know you're miserable when you're hungry i know my time is up but this is our kids these are our kids not just lunch we need to do better as a community as parents i'm listening to my son

174come home every day he's so upset and hates school because his friends aren't his friends anymore because of me because i chose to stand up and fight for the kids i chose to stand up for finding these kids anybody's kids that's that's thank you this is where all you are you might not think i chose to fight for your kid but i'm fighting for your kids to have choices that's it and do better the library is closed the library [Applause] thank you hi my name is nicole i live on locato um this is only the second meeting i've ever been to and the reason why i say that is because i'm kind of embarrassed by that i'm gonna be honest i'm a lifelong resident i graduated from this high school in 1998. my husband graduated

175from this high school his parents graduated from this high school when i went to high school here we didn't have these problems and i know it was what 25 years ago almost um but i guess i was always one of those parents who just assumed i met my husband we got married we had a family there was nowhere else that we wanted to go we chose to stay here i don't know what happened along the line but a lot of stuff got broken and i really appreciate hearing that that's being acknowledged and that you know everyone's working so hard to fix that but i have a sophomore she missed basically two years of school now she's one of these kids that are mentioned she didn't get the foundational education she should have she's an honor

176student in biology she can't take honors chemistry next year because her math grade was not good enough how does she get caught up i understand in a few years that these children that have the foundation are going to come up to the high school and they're going to pull up the high school scores but what about the freshman the sophomore the junior god forbid the seniors that now have to go to college and have missed out where where what are we doing for them because i hear the money is going to come in and we have a plan that's not good enough for the kids that are graduating this year or graduating next year if we can have honor students tutor other kids that does not cost money give them credit they can put it

177on their resume for college there are other solutions why are we not doing them i don't understand it and on top of that we have issues with food my son had moldy chocolate you know in the cafeteria he eats lunch at school every day i have to instruct him check your food check the dates check everything he's 12. he can do that what about the seven-year-olds and the eight-year-olds and the nine-year-olds are we really saying it's their responsibility to check the food we need somebody at the beginning of every lunch period or before the first lunch period making sure that they're not putting out expired food for our kids i don't find that hard so i'm asking that you do that i'm asking that we find a solution for the children now let's not wait

178for the funds to come in if parents want to put together a community group and have kids come on a saturday we have you know community building over by the lake that i don't even know what that's even used for kids can get together these children need to re-establish relationships with each other the bullying is a huge problem and honestly the adults are not making it any better these children are so brave to come up here and talk when they know that they're the minority in this school and they're coming up here and talking and there are adults in this room that are making faces that's not okay you might not agree with somebody else but we're supposed to be teaching our children that that's okay everyone doesn't have to agree but we need to

179respect each other's opinions and we need to support each other i don't see that happening we have you know assignments being given out that are very biased and political and i am asking whoever does the curriculum in this school that that's stop you're not going to fix the bullying problems you're not going to fix these issues that these kids are having if you keep bringing adele issues into the school let them be kids they've lost two years of their life they'll never get it back politics should not be being brought up in the school should not be taught to the kids they shouldn't be being raised to be activists they can go to college decide what they want to do what they believe in when they're 18 and they're adults but it shouldn't be going

180on in this school we're not going to fix the problems if we keep doing this so i want to just say to these kids and i wasn't even going to talk tonight but they're so great for being here and i really want the adults to support them for speaking up because there are a lot of other kids who feel the same way and they don't have a voice i'm not a public speaker i'm nervous standing here talking there's a lot of other adults in here who didn't even get up and talk but the kids are here and they did and they're the ones who missed out the most all of this has costed them the most they need to be heard and they need to be listened to and they need to be believed and

181so i'm asking for the school to make an extra effort to support these children because the kids are bullying each other they're bringing in adult concepts political ideologies and they're attacking each other over it they've been so scared and so fearful for two years they're scared to get a cold i mean we have to bring back some balance this cannot continue to go on otherwise for the next three years we're going to have these same problems and i still have a child who's 12 that needs to go through the school system so please let us parents know what we can do as a community to help this because i don't want to leave i don't want to take my kids out of school but i will if some of these things don't get corrected because

182their education and their well-being is first and foremost thank you [Applause] so every week you send out an email giving us who has tested positive for cobin who has been sent home for a car attack not the names but the amount however if i walk into school tomorrow i have walked into school in the beginning of the year for months when i first walked in i just got through covet a few months later my my friend got cove he got sent home for contact race i went home with him from school every single day for three weeks after that he picked me up from school so as soon as i left that building i was with someone who just got sent home from a contact trace i let the school know this they never sent

183me a home so how was i not contact trace how is his sister not contact trace how is his family not that often went to the school was this the normal classes that makes how are they not getting contact trace when it is such a pandemic when they are going home civilizing together and then he is coming into school the next day we are all socializing outside of this school and inside this school so why should it be a difference if i have my mask on or not if i am friends with this person or this person next to me thank you i would like to bring up another two copies or topics i'm sorry a little nervous to pick a fact of who we should she said i had the same situation me and

184another peer were texted in school that one of our friends that we ate lunch with we sat not even a foot away from each other across each other and she texted us that she tested positive i went to a teacher and the teacher told me there's nothing we can do just continue through life like it was nothing also this school this board likes to use the word consistency a lot and very loosely as up here and going to the school your consistency is going in the wrong direction we need to know and the parents need to know where our money is going if you're getting these funds we just feel like pushing under the drug we don't know what's happening with that money there's a lot of things that money could be used for but

185we don't know what you guys are using for the money hi um so i have like eight versions of this little speech that i wanted to say tonight but i think the kids and some other parents everyone here kind of said everything i was gonna say so i'm going to make it really short when i think audubon i think it acts i the ability and everything that goes with it it blows my mind we say we're one district we're three different buildings in my opinion mansion is the strongest there's the best teachers and they're there for the kids and then you have these two other buildings they're not there for the kids and and the few that are they're very rare and the ones that should be in the administrative positions we remove them we

186put them back in classrooms mind-boggling by board to bed year after year after year the ineptness just keeps coming back so what i'm saying you've heard from the kids you hear from the parents can we at slim point have a conversation about how to stop being an act and move forward get our kids college ready because they're not help our kids whose religion grade became a math breed who lowered a gpa who we've had numerous conversations with over two and a half years and it's still not resolved because it was your kid or your kid or your kid you'd be way more pissed than i am these kids it's their future they have to function in a democratic society it's democracy it's freedom of opinion not entitlement no you're better than me or i'm better

187than you and the agendas in the classroom they need to stop educate them religion if that applies math reading social studies history science how about conversation and a little respect let's walk away from that i think all the bonds perfected that [Applause] man please have a motion to close public session motion second all those in favor aye any opposed all right dr davis let's start uh several comments tonight on mass squaring in general i think you addressed that earlier address that again please sure there's comments in regards to both mass vaccination and protocols and procedures so the district filed the governor's executive order of the executive orders law we still have to follow those until march 7th so as far as mass and then the charge was put forward to is it because of the

188removed it's we're following the executive order and we need to continue to follow the executive order as far as social distancing and contact tracing you follow the cdc and the department of health guidelines i would encourage anyone that has questions or doubts in regards to how they were filed to follow up with the administration and who were one of our school nurses there were several a few comments tonight on just the school safety in general uh that him has come up bullying has come up uh school climate and culture several comments uh you know circling around that afraid to go to the bathroom fights in the bathrooms um hib investigations and the way that they're conducted could you address some of those concerns yeah so i mean we started off talking about hiv self-assessment we

189also talked about ssds some of my administrative team is here um there'll be some follow through in regards to some of those questions we follow guidelines and procedures in regards to those investigation there were some questions about people letting administration know once again i encourage anyone that feels as though there's any harassment intimidation and bullying to let administration know as far as procedures and protocols will be some conversation um it's not typical to bring both an aggressor or alleged aggressor or any alleged victim together or to be brought up at the same time sometimes well like i said we'll i will review that um as far as oh i'll stick with that so in the event that that did happen you're gonna look into that and make sure that it doesn't happen in the adventure

190protocol yes okay um there was one comment about sports and the privilege to play sports and some accusations about students with failing grades so um can you just look into that and follow up with us you know whether or not that's the case so i know doc i know uh mr burke uh talked about this during the presentation but um in terms of the presentation of the ixl data um you know calling out teachers not calling out teachers splitting up the scores uh there was one comment about uh data over time i don't i think that tonight's presentation were snapshots in time that wasn't first grade the same group in the second grade in the same group in the third grade those were actual first graders second graders and third graders so that should answer

191that question but in terms of the way that it was presented can you talk about that yeah um i will comment in regards to the numbers i actually have the same language i excelled it was a snapshot in both you know snapchat in the fall and snapshot now in the winter it's the first round for us to use that data we were using longitudinal map data at this time as we move forward we will have longitudinal ixl data to look at students and where they are and what the growth is we use the data staff mr uh burke commented in regards to the pd you know the staff is going to be looking at data um on friday we look at data often we look at their individual data in regards to how um how

192students are performing to make decisions within classrooms we make decisions within grade levels or content area so that's going to continue although you're not going to present just like we don't present state assessment data when the subgroup population is too small we're not going to do that with our faculty and staff either okay lunch came up a few times this has been a recurring theme we asked you test you with looking into it you wrote a very very detailed report a few months ago but these continues these issues continue to linger is there more that you can do to to look into this and confirm yeah confirm whether or not these things are real now if there's expired items and people are seeing this over and over again you know we need to that needs

193to be corrected so can you look into that yeah we'll review those practices and procedures with miss ventus and our team can you report back to us what you find and what the how are we going to move forward okay um there were a couple questions tonight about the use of essa funds can you talk about the esser fund spending that's been presented to the board so far where people can find that and what you are required to do in terms of transparency yeah um with any of this the federal monies that we receive there's an application procedure or a grant procedure in regards to filling that out there's very specific areas where you can and cannot spend money it's almost delineated specifically in regards to the money set people are i mean some comments

194too in the sre arp monies that are there the plans online the plans it's very specific in regards to how much money is being spent in which categories i know at least one member of the audience actually quoted uh some of the some of the expenditures anyone can go online one of the things that will be added to that is a community response piece we've been waiting to do the announcement that we actually have the funds but also the way the monies are allocated we have some flexibility so we see programs that are successful we can move forward with that if there's something specific that we did not identify already we have some flexibility in that as well some of it is in regards to staff interest and support for some of those programs so

195i would encourage anyone to go right online because you can see it it's right on the safe returning school plan link under the district pieces and then down towards the bottom the presentations available um because i'm making these comments now there's the ability to potentially open up for comment uh sooner than later it was really waiting for the monies to kind of recognize some of the things that we will potentially be doing in the future and then encouraging people to look at other ways creatively to do it pier 2 hearings uh part of that plan and i know there were some comments in regards to that extension uh remediation and support across the green levels okay in response to miss alexander the comment and latency i get that um i i respect where you're coming

196from but we follow robert's rules of order and this is the way that public meetings are conducted so the public has an opportunity to make a comment on agenda items so that when we vote on those agenda items we've heard the public and then we conduct our business and then we have this public comment session so this is a pretty regular way to do things um this is a late meeting but not always this late but just to address that um there were several comments tonight regarding crt and politics in the classroom and speaking for myself as a history teacher for 17 years there are appropriate ways to discuss history and politics in the classroom teachers should not be injecting their political agenda into the classroom so if that and it will it will come

197back up to us to the students that spoke tonight i want to applaud the courage that it took to come up here it's not often that students come up and speak i would encourage you to we have a student council representative that's here i don't know to what how robust the student council program is in the school but make it robust use your student you talk through student council you know have those conversations and use student council as a vehicle to have influence mrs davis mentioned that starting next year we're going to have a student representative on the board i'm not sure how that student will be selected but i think that will give more voice to students which is something that we need and i would encourage the students that are here tonight to

198um you know to keep an eye out for that and uh engage with their student council representing that that person that sits here eventually i think that would be a good space for that does anyone else have any questions or comments any board members there was evidence [Music] you should direct that to dr davis immediately yeah and okay so that's what you need to do is you need to have a conversation with dr davis and then he will follow up with you and you can follow back up with him and you can bring me into the conversation if you feel that it's necessary okay you're welcome okay any other questions or comments just just one quick question and i know we've we've talked about the esser funds and all these things that are going to

199happen once they're funded i guess my question is if we found out tomorrow that they were approved how quickly would plans be in place not as quick as we need to take some time but we have to have conversations with teachers one of the things that's resonating with this that have those conversations now in regards to the plans and what the options are so that we can do a quicker turnaround i think i would say two to three weeks but i don't want to say two to three weeks because there's a lot that goes into it it depends on what the activity is so the monies have been sitting there so let's just assume that the monies are going to be approved correct but that's what resonating with me right now and then you know

200looking into the administrative need to start having the conversation with the faculty staff sooner than later which is now so that once the money is released you'll be ready to act on it again but i think that's what we're yeah well that's part of well that's part of what we're doing in regards to some of the programs um those monies will be supported through esser so we talk about hiv or cyber security or some of the sl sel things we're having conversations about so some of those plans and there are sr monies will be able to happen sooner looking at and having conversations with regards to where students are and some of the academic supports we need to have those conversations now how about some of the things that are suggestions of things that could

201be done free now they may already be happening and we may not know about it so if some of those things that are going on with student services whether it's tutors and stuff i certainly would like to be a prize for that i think that would be good news to get out to everybody okay our next meeting is next wednesday at 6 30 we will go right into executive session and spend the entire meeting in executive session right next wednesday no action will be taken uh the next regular board of education meeting is scheduled for wednesday march 16th at 6 30. may i please have a motion to return and please have a motion to go into executive session action may be taken after that executive session it could take an hour and a half

202longer okay uh on to executive i'm sorry all those in favor you
