all right you are alive all righty do i have this okay here we go all right everybody welcome to our regular b board meeting second meeting of the month um we're going to call to order it is 6 start with the meeting open public meeting statement the new jersey open public meetings law was enacted to ensure the right of the public to have advanced notice of and to attend the meetings of public bodies at which time any business affecting their interests is discussed in active law in accordance with the provisions of this act of board of education policy zero 162 the board of education of the borough of ben brook has could cause notice of this meeting to be posted in the board office at battlefront high school and mail their fax to the courier
news boundary clerk southbound board of education and any person who has requested individual notice and paid the requirement please stand for the questions [Music] here great thank you uh again i'll keep my comments brief i do think that we're going to cover some of our more uh salient updates during the committee uh discussions um just wish everybody is having a great summer and for those of you in the audience that you are ready and able to get back to school in a couple of weeks i know i'm excited to happen and i hope you are as well so at this point uh dr freeman do you have anything you want to have for your super attendance report um nothing in particular just that we are ready for students to come our schools are clean our
teachers will be coming in beginning tomorrow to read classes and we'll be well prepared for everybody we look forward to seeing everybody that's great thank you all right moving right along to the committee reports uh do you want to start with education sure so we um we met and we discussed um regarding the standards and the curriculum uh health and gym and health and uh mrs fisher is going to have a presentation that will go towards detail in regards to to the regula there's also [Music] a new job description so we uh used to have a parent integrative specialist and now um there has been a change in the in the job description of it that's on the agenda to be approved for today um and i believe oh the the stat the the new
standards are up to date on the website um so again they're um for for you know staff and parents to to go on can go into the website and look at the standards for the curriculum but again this special will go into more detail regarding the health the health and science not the health and science the health and gym standards also any questions for edith on the education committee all right mike you wanna do an update on governance sure so uh governance we have an update for the public as much as i do for you guys um first thing uh dr freeman is asking after as long as i've been here meetings have been on mondays if we would like to move to another night possibly wednesday um the administration just you know as you
can imagine has a pretty hectic monday when they have to prepare for a board meeting after a weekend off and it would give them a lot more time to get ready for us if we did it more towards the middle of the week so we propose wednesday um you can let us know about that we wouldn't you know be changing the very next meeting or anything like that but definitely let us know sooner than later if wednesday's work for you would still be the same times most likely i mean i guess it doesn't have to be but it makes sense to do it around the same time uh so let us know on that one um the other thing we talked to we're trying to get into the things we talked about in our retreat
a little bit more in depth we talked about the committees the committee structure the committee assignments um one thing that all of our committee chairs need to do is decide what day you're going to be meeting kind of going forward we know that for some of us the times especially mondays at five for some committees don't work so we want to change some of that um we want to meet as you may remember from the retreat that first week of the month have all the committees meet uh so that we can be ready for the first meeting of the month on the second monday of each month keep in mind we can we do have the right or the right we have the ability to meet any day um dr freeman you know for for
some of us it would probably be better to stack those meetings two or three on the same night but we're also going to be you know really taking care of the members and making sure that you can be there we want as much attendance as we can get because as we all know things come up and we were kind of given these times without being asked and some of us can't make the meeting so we want to find times that work for everyone so committee chairs please reach out to your members and make sure you get a time and a day of the week and a time and then we'll all kind of come together we'll send maybe we'll send them all to dr freeman and say here's what we came up with do they
all let out because if we all happen to just by chance pick wednesday at six that's not gonna work so we'll have to go from there but get an idea of what your members can do um and then this one's really for the public because starting in september it looks like our meetings our public meeting structure is going to change a little bit what you see here is going to look different as i was just saying our committees are going to meet the first week of the month every month that second monday which which we meet now on every second monday will now be what we're referring to as a workshop meeting in other words we won't most likely be taking any action unless we absolutely have to right there may be something that comes
up but for the most part there won't be a lot of action taken and you will get a chance kind of to get you know a glimpse into more discussion more conversation of what what it is that we talk about at committee so the idea is right after those committees the committee chairs bring them here we give out as much information as we can to the to the full board we discuss if the committee has come to a recommendation we say here's what we think and then of course if the rest of the board doesn't agree we have a more robust conversation that you're probably used to seeing from our from our board uh that would be the first meeting that also then gives dr freeman and the administration a lot of time to give
us information that they have for us and we don't have to vote on it right away because then we hold that behold most voting until the second meeting of the month which would be the third monday so i'm sorry the fourth monday so we'll meet on second monday and fourth monday as we do now or in this case it may be wednesday jeez this is a lot i'm sorry i'm talking in circles at this point i apologize for that second and fourth week let's call it of the month and that fourth week will be where we take most of our action where we will vote on things that we have already discussed the previous meeting there may of course be things that come up in those two weeks and we may have to have some
brief discussion in that second meeting of each month but the hope is that you have seen all of our conversations ahead of time we have time to think about it because as you guys know sometimes we hear about something we have to vote on it right away we just don't have enough time to really delve deeply into it as we would like to so hopefully this not only is good for the public to see a little bit more of what's going on but good for us to have more time to think things through so that was the idea we also kind of are planning ahead as a governance committee we have to also go into each committee's kind of charge and decide if that if they're still meeting the needs of our board we know
that we might want to change one of our committees all together from human resources to i believe we called it the outreach or something like that so we have to maybe write a whole new policy for that so we have a lot of work ahead in governance tonight was kind of more of a planning and here's what's coming up meaning but it was a lot as you can see yeah you know the only things that i would add um the community outreach committee i think for the balance of this year we're going to try and start as an ad hoc um and so lisa actually volunteered to chair uh and danny and joanna volunteered as members so um you know we'll look to kick that off hopefully between now and the next meeting um and
then the second thing that i would mention is just at our retreat we also talk about setting some goals for the district for the coming year and i don't know that we're ready to talk about that today but know that we went through that exercise and that something hopefully we can bring back to the community at future meetings oh there was one other thing um just remind me of as far as your committee assignments know that they are you know fluid and can change we talked about once again reaching out to all the board members and making sure you're happy with your committee assignments if anybody wants changes that we can you know feasibly make happen then we're we're very open to that i don't know if we decided when that would happen but we
we do have an election coming up i don't know if there will be a new member or not start starting january depending on the election so uh we will probably be reaching out to you about your assignment as well that's it that's all i have great that's enough yeah that was a lot sorry got a little long-winded there i apologize anybody have questions for mike on governance please okay michelle i don't think human resources met correct okay so roger you want to go on operations sure we had a really great operations meeting and i wanted to give a shout out to our old we ended up having recently some active shooter scenarios at one of our schools uh i think it's phenomenal that our we are so lucky our police department works those lines of
communications as well as encouraging continued positive dialogue so i really appreciate the local police department for coming out helping us just to be safe unification projects throughout the district i recently went to the community middle school and i have to say i think this the school is phenomenal all the schools are smart nice they're they're well taken care of i'm very impressed with the administrative team and all of the hard custodial staff that's been doing an outstanding job and finally uh the tech office we're talking about some technology uh gearing up for the school year preparing to make sure that this year is going to go as flawlessly as possible just some things round about other than that you know that was pretty much those three topics but i just wanted to thank everyone for
getting everything together awesome thanks any questions for roger and operations i would just add really quickly that i was invited to observe the active shooter training at smalley this week and it was very eye-opening um but but outstanding i mean we are in good hands they the officers that i went through the training with were amazing um really obviously very professional but but um went through the training very seriously um there were really good questions they had they observed uh some really good stuff within the school um i thought it was it was and it was eye-opening for me even though i'm a teacher and i see it on the other side every day it was very interesting to see from their point of view so i thought it was outstanding thank you anybody else
for roger okay and then the only other committee listed here uh uh was lisa's uh county which i don't believe i think they only made but now that we know that you're repping for south africa we can have breakfast yes i guess i could yeah i think again uh one of them and i remember this because i actually got to ask a question about this one of the major things that they're going to be doing is changing the instead of having the 9 9 um nine period they're moving it to eight to eight periods now and unfortunately they are doing this for this school year due to the shortage in staff so they will be um again they're uh anticipating for next year to move back to the um ninth period um sessions but for
this school year they're doing so they're ending their um you know earlier in the day that was one of the major things that i remember again other than that i think again yes okay that's great well thank you for giving us a report [Music] okay any other committee related topics all right [Music] we are actually sorry we are open now to the public for agenda items only so if there's anybody from the room who would like to offer comments or ask questions about things that are on the agenda that might be a good time great we do have two comments that came in from online uh one had to do with the district website not being accessible but it looks like a subsequent comment that was resolved by the user so that's good um there
is a question on item 6.15 will the position be eligible for the bbea and the answer to that that is it for the online questions uh so we are now up to approval and meeting minutes excuse me may i just ask questions good evening my name is melissa turner i was just interested that's fine um you i had mentioned the student and family integration specialist i was just i'd like to inquire what that rule entails so it's just it seems like an interesting position maybe somebody just gets older i'm sure so we had a position um which we have an employee who was hired to be our parent integration specialist and when that person was hired it was really to do a lot of public relations work for the district um you know make forms
and um applications and things more accessible to spanish-speaking members of our community okay work alongside the principals to make sure that meetings were conducted in both english and spanish over time we hired a pr firm that is working to do the district website and the newsletter and are doing a lot of the things that that parent integration specialist job description um had said that he would be doing so we hired a new director of bilingual world languages and asl and that person needs more support working specifically with our students and with our families and just creating a more inclusive atmosphere for our spanish-speaking families so we just took a look at the old job description and removed the things that the pr firm was doing and then we met with the employee and the director
to add some additional items that he would now be responsible for sounds like a good position and needed thank you thank you okay any other questions from the room all right so we are up to item number 5.1 uh resolve that not report of education approves the minutes of the following meetings this would be our regular meeting from august 8th 2022. have a motion motion thank you mr paul a second second thank you mr zupko any discussion i need to abstain thank you mrs defazio anybody else okay can we have a world cup yes thank you um so at this point i'm actually going to beg everyone's indulgence usually when we have a presentation from administration we do handle that under the superintendent's report that has some information to share with us tonight so as
long as everybody's okay i would like to uh insert that at this point so unless there are any injections you're over there i'm sorry i'm just entered and go to the next slide uh right arrow keys [Music] okay good evening everybody so um as you are aware um the state came out with uh the new model curriculum for health and physical education it actually came out in the end of 2020 and was introduced to districts in the beginning of 2021. we had a chance to review the curriculum and the changes at that time and we worked with our health and physical education department to update our curriculum on the district website in atlas rubicon in the fall of 2021 so our district curriculum has already been updated to include the new standards since about october
of last year um a couple of just highlights um so last week i sent home a letter to all of the district families by email i included a crosswalk that took you through the 2014 standards and what the changes were in language for the 2020 standards um i also included some links for the new jersey department of education as well as a new curricular resource that we'll be using so i'm going to just highlight some of that tonight but if you look up here each year the state comes out with different statutes that we are obligated to include in our curriculum and we review our curriculum every year and we make the necessary changes to make sure we're in compliance with those statutes these are statutes that came out that affected the health and pe
instruction prior to 2014. so all of these things were already included in our curriculum and you can look online and see the specific grades um especially with that curricular walk through when they were included and how we um infused them into the curriculum but the state always again is updating things for us and these are the major changes that came out between 2014 and 2020. the first thing is the discussion on consent the second is mental health each year they incorporate a little bit more in depth of what we should be including in mental health initiatives you know and they try to keep us as up-to-date as possible in that area um we have to include now the new jersey safe haven infant protection act we have to include information in our curriculum about sexting
and we have to include information about sexual abuse and assault awareness all of these are mandated by state policy and code as you can see the um references are there for you so the backbone of what we're doing with the new standards um basically this is statewide and what they're trying to do is to help us teach children to act as responsible and contributing members of society to build and maintain healthy relationships to communicate clearly and effectively to resolve conflict um to attend to their personal health social emotional health and physical well-being to engage in an active and healthy lifestyle to make decisions set goals and use technology tools responsibly so those are the overlying um you know and then if you look at the standards themselves they go a little bit more in depth
about how those things should be infused into the curriculum the language that we're required to use to educate our students our approach when we first met about this curriculum we had a lot of conversation with our health and pe teachers one of the things that we talked about was how are we going to make this um as easy as possible for our teachers to teach to students so one of the things that we did is we added two new physical education teachers one at smalley and one at community middle school that will enable us enable us to make our health classes a smaller student population size so rather than combining classes and having a class of 65 to 70 students we now can take one homeroom of students which is about 25 26 and have
a smaller group for health classes we're required to have 150 minutes per week of health and physical education so by adding the additional staff were able to do that as well the second thing is we decided that no new standards would be covered in september september would be meant just to get kids back into school get back into the routine but also to provide some professional development for our health and pe teachers to make sure that they fully understand the standards the materials that we're giving them to teach the standards but also so that parents can be more comfortable with the material being presented and have an opportunity to ask questions of the health and pe teachers should they need further information we also decided that to the greatest extent practical the new material so
when they put out curricular resources they usually do it in bands so it would be a k to two band a three to five band um six to eight so we decided that with introducing the new material from the state we would focus on the most mature grade level in that band so we're going to be introducing that new material in grades 2 5 8 and 12. okay so that's where the focus for those new standards will be um the new material will be covered in a limited number of sessions we're not going to drag it out we're not going to make it a whole market period along it'll be a few lessons instruction for health in grades one through six will be taught exclusively by our health and pe teachers we may have the
assistance of nurses over a period of time depending upon what the lessons are we also decided that we're going to be teaching um using a product or a program called the great body shop which has been used by southbound brook for a couple of years now and i gave the link to that in the parent letter that was sent home you can go online you can look at the curriculum basically what happens with that is they provide us with a full outline of all of the topics that they'll be covering over the course of the school year then we can provide those links to parents month by month we can provide you with an update of the topics that will be covered in your child's health class you can look at the topics you can
even look at the resource of the magazine that's being used to teach those topics and then you can make a decision as a parent whether or not it's a topic that you want your child to sit in on whether you want more information about that topic um or whether you choose to opt out and i'll talk about that in a couple minutes um also the resources that your child is um reviewing in school will be sent home to you at the end of the month so should you choose that you want to um you know provide further explanation educate your child a little bit more at home you have the opportunity to do that as well um all curriculum for the health and pe as i said was actually updated in october of 21 so
um the new information is already there for you to review it has been there for over a year or about a year so opting out a lot of people have asked you know what if i'm not comfortable with the material being presented you do have the opportunity to opt out of these lessons um i just put the uh state statute up top as with public school in the state of new jersey however you cannot opt out for two different reasons and i have those listed for you um there is no opt-out for instruction on economic diversity um equity inclusion tolerance and belonging in connection with gender and sexual orientation race and ethnicity disabilities and religious tolerance there's also no opt-out for instruction on the political economic and social contributions of persons with disabilities and lesbian
gay bisexual and transgender people at the middle and high school level so if for example um a high school english course is um you know focusing on an author um who is transgender you don't have the opportunity to opt out of those lessons if you would like to opt out what we will do is we will send home a monthly schedule of health topics to you by our health teachers prior to any instruction happening and parents must notify the school in writing in a timely manner to ensure that your intent is clearly understood but the plans for opting out are going to be shared with you depending upon the grade level of your student at back to school night so that information is going to be provided to you by administration they will meet with
our health and pe teachers prior to back to school night so that we have a clear plan of action for what should happen should you choose to opt out if you have any concerns or questions you should reach out to your child's health teacher as the first person after that you can reach out to the building principles they will have answers for you and if you still need more information i am available you can reach out to me and i'll be able to provide some clarification for you in closing so our district is committed to preparing our students for life outside of the classroom we know that all students deserve to be prepared for their future lives in the community both locally and globally and we want our students to be well prepared when they
are aware of the diversity within our schools our community and the entire world our district's also i'm committed to making sure that all students are supported and comfortable in their learning environments they need to feel safe respected where they can ask questions and be open-minded regarding the chosen lifestyles perspectives beliefs and values of everyone so to wrap it all up as i said our curriculum has been updated um the key new material will be taught in the grades second fifth eighth and twelfth grade the curriculum is available for you online you can also look at the states curriculum the model curriculum which was developed with representatives from all 21 counties that's online for you i provided the crosswalk for you all of this information will be posted to the district website as well as more
details on each of the individual schools their plan for when a child dumps out a child when they do opt out will go to an alternate location and be provided with an alternate lesson during that time period and that's it thank you i'll take care of that okay thank you do we have to do are there any questions i don't know i don't know how that works [Music] so [Music] okay now questions i'm sorry [Music] thank you very much mrs fisher okay so we are resuming the active agenda here at item 6.1 resolve that the superintendent recommends for approval the resolutions as outlined in personnel resolutions under district and high school this is 6.2 through 6.15 my promotion motion thank you mr powell a second second thank you mr minhas any discussion so now i

so um the first thing i'd like to follow up on um was the covet guidelines for september 2022 where are we with that i have a meeting tomorrow to discuss those guidelines with the other superintendents in the county and when will the teachers be notified prior to the start of school i would think okay um [Music] dr freeman i want to thank you for you personally reaching out to me in regards to an issue i had at the last meeting um i had stated that the work family connection program for the lamont and the lafayette students there is no um there is no support at lafayette for this after care program the students from lafayette have to go over to lamont and my concern was an issue of little ones little little ones trying to
get their act together and taking them over in weather and um there was an acknowledgement that they were trying to get some busing so i know you had a meeting i was wondering if you could provide any update in regards to where we are with the transportation for the aftercare program yes they they stated that they were looking to get bus transportation from a local bus company but they were having difficulty getting a response so what i said was that i would reach out and didn't try to speed the process okay you haven't heard back at this point or maybe we can get a little bit firmer on that because parents if well first of all i want to make one note which you saw in my email and all of the memos that went
out for the work family program it said that students in lamont and lamont's annex were eligible for after after-care program it did not say anything about the lafayette so the only reason why i knew that lafayette students were applicable to this program is because last year i asked a lot of questions right so last year i knew that my daughter would be so i kind of overlooked the first half dozen memos and then i caught it and i'm like well maybe the registration is really low and they can't have a teacher on site at lafayette because it doesn't mention that lafayette students were applicable for this program and it didn't say anything about the little lafayette kid walking over to annex either so um i i have concern with that which i've spoken to you
about so you'll follow up with me personally or get me a memo somehow when you have a resolve i would imagine right one thing i want you to understand is that program isn't you know part of school i understand so we're helping them out to try to get them a bus i think the concern you expressed was that uh you didn't want the cost to be incurred by the pound i don't want the cost to be incurred um that's one thing but on the other hand you know like if it were like today i won't want my little one walking you know that's just it's not night i listen if you're sixth seventh eighth grade you tough it out listen i was you know i had to tough it out i learned responsibility bring an
umbrella bring your rain jack and if not suck it up tough but you can't expect it's a little one and you know you got one teacher trying to muster up all these kids get your umbrella get your book bed who's hanging you know you know how kids are in first grade so it's a concern at first grade that they're walking so um the cost listen i suck it up too as a parent i got to do what i got to do as a parent it's it's the concern of the walking but i know you were looking into that and i personally thank you for being in connection with me about that it's really important so i have some questions about the new pe but if there are other family members that are interested in stepping
before me i'm i'm happy to sit down for a moment i could just keep on talking all night long okay so there is this opportunity to opt out so the presentation was helpful thank you um i just want to make note that was this noted anywhere like in any publication for bound brook that the board of education was going to have this type of presentation tonight because i i must have missed it somewhere i scoured every bound brook webpage to see what was happening and i got nothing so if it was like in a news posting that i missed i don't know that it was circulated well in advance i think it was in reaction to uh the curriculum changes coming up by the board of education but you guys knew about that since 2021
though right yeah but we didn't we didn't vote on the curriculum until tonight you know i understand that but like i don't know i almost feel like this could have been better been announced for parents now i i made a little bit of a stand and i don't know if you guys have been on facebook but i am the one who who posted some things and i said parents be aware people were taking my words and taking them out of context and i don't really care what other parents think well i care about or is my child my family values and that um i feel that there are certain things that a parent should reserve the right to teach their children and i understand culture has shift and shame on parents because some parents aren't
doing their do for their children and they think that school is a drop-off babysitting place and it's not it's a mutually agreed-upon established protocol to help develop these children's minds so we're helped we're as parents working with the teachers but we have a responsibility as parents so i have some concerns with this program and i appreciate that i understand the opt-out process because two weeks ago i was on fire because there was no notice all you hear about is publicly that governor murphy put this in and these mandates so i just can just keep on talking i i apologize what are the penalties for not instituting this you mean if we were to choose and not observe the law it's it's amazing i don't think as i understood it now i very well could be
wrong as i understood it that it was a mandate and there were other townships that were actually not instituting this model and um again i don't have the end well be all knowledge of it but i understood that some um toms river um of course i don't have the list on me anyway but what what happens if you don't adopt it what what are the consequences i just want to understand what the consequences are so i can i can i can find out yeah like tell me like a 20 000 fine tell me they're gonna take money away like i want to understand what what are the consequences i mean i think the first consequence would be on the district's q stack is what determines state funding for the district and future funding not current
funding correct moving forward okay uh so so cusack has essentially a questionnaire various things the district fills out and one of the questions one of the criteria is whether the district is aligned directly to the estate curriculum okay so right off the bat if the district doesn't follow the curriculum in this area sex ed or any other frankly uh their two stack score is going to be hit uh depending on the qsac score various things you have one as i said it affects state funding two and ken bridges all depending on the score in what's called state intervention um the most prominent of those recently was patterson was under complete state control it was returned after that uh separate from that the commissioner of education the department of education has the power to compel school
districts to uh follow the law one of which is curriculum that doesn't mean that the commissioner of education or the department men will necessarily do it but they do have that power and i know they've made some statements in the past they do intend to come down on those districts which as you correctly know have voted to essentially ignore those requirements but it's since the short answer to your question is to be determined uh it can result in state funding it can result in frankly ethics charges against individual board members because one of the obligations of a board member is to adhere and follow the school laws one of this being the curriculum sure if a board member were to say i'm deciding you know i'm not going to follow the law in any respect
a member of the public or a member of the department of education can file ethics charges against them which could then result in either essential reprimand suspension or removal of that individual so again it's kind of to be determined insurance that are that are available to the commissioner of education are vast but the the simplest answer is definitely impact on the qsec score and potential ramifications uh that could lead to state control all right i appreciate your answer and maybe it's just me maybe other people want to know and they don't want to ask i don't know but i think it's important that we as family members understand that there are potential consequences in what they are and what they mean and what they mean to the school board and to our schools into the
funding and i think that's all very important it helps support the rationale um okay so secondly you have um noted that there's going to be several different like lesson plans and that we can pick and choose which ones we can opt out of or is it a blanket statement like yeah so they'll be um it'll be outlined what lessons so they'll be broken out into specific lists so i might need to send you guys up to like three letters in a month i don't think so i mean if they do it prior to the instruction even occurring you could send one letter saying i'd like to have my child out of these specific questions okay okay so then we will get all the information prior to the start that way we can say all right
listen this is something that i'll you know in my own home i'll discuss my you know whatever i opt out but we'll get that information before thank you for the clarity that helps but just remember that they are they are um ones that you cannot opt out and i was on there in terms of um so so if the lessons have to do with those areas and i can't recall right now which one's the ones that specifically you wouldn't be able to walk down there okay so my daughter's gonna be in in first grade so i know this curriculum is not incredibly impactful for her just yet but it will be next year um so if there is something that i choose that i would prefer to opt her out of um is this just
a class or is this infused into the daily repertoire of school i mean is it i think that was already answered last week and was referenced in the presentation it's only during health and pe class okay i want a clarification and i wanted to hear that out loud you got it thank you i appreciate that i mean the point that was great um but it's important to understand because if i had and i am not intolerant by any means i have lots of friends that are of all sorts of being and i love them very much but if i had somebody in my family life or a friend that came to my child and started explaining things that are clearly across a line for me as a parent i would be very upset and they
probably would not um we'd have some parents right so i just want to make sure that if i entrust a teacher to teach my child math reading etc that that teacher is going to teach that curriculum and not say oh well look at my flag this is my pronoun and again i'm not intolerant i respect and love all people but there's a certain line again if there's certain things that i don't want my child to hear from other people um i just want to make sure that again i teach tolerance to my child very much so but i don't want to open pandora's box either because then it's like the flood of questions and now you know you know how one year you know what first graders are they want to know everything well why
well why well why why and then and it's not done on purpose but accidentally now we're moving into this commentary from the teacher well you know i gotta answer instead of saying you know what let me send your mommy a message maybe your mom should we definitely hear your concern loud and clear what we've understood from the administration is that the curriculum will be followed during the courses in which it's intended to be taught and not elsewise okay if that turns out not to be the case i think you know exactly who to contact yeah yeah i'm sure he'll be addressed um again i i do appreciate i'm not coming here with a pitchfork or ready to lay so i understand how difficult your job is as um quarterback you have to make incredibly impactful
decisions that impact our little ones um and most of you if not all of you are parents i'm sure so you've seen the other side so um i appreciate your time thank you if i have any other questions who would i uh reach out to if it's a feminine if it's specifically related to the curriculum i think you know mrs fisher's presentation was really that you want to get in touch with the person who's going to be teaching your child first if at all okay so i would say again correctly talk to the teacher first then the principal and then mrs fisher i love the lineup thank you that's helpful and i think that you know sometimes if i you know i'm a second year bound brook parent i didn't know the lineup so that's
very helpful that way i don't bombard you with emails and you know because anything else and just lastly what's up uh the update on genesis and because i can't get in is it being down for maintenance updated you know scheduling or so i mean as far as like seeing the classes the teachers and things yeah is it too early am i like premature for this okay it'll be up september 1st september first okay so that's when i'll see the teachers and stuff like that okay wonderful thank you thank you okay there's no microphone i don't see one down there okay i'm happy to bring it i mean i haven't been here in a while so i know the procedure usually there's a microphone we're excellent listeners okay so i'm a parent um so thank you
melissa turner i wish to acknowledge her my my child is a senior so the damage has been done already i was here in 2019 protesting the new curriculum that governor murphy wanted to implement and i was told there was nothing they could do quarterback could just do nothing because the state mandated this curriculum um and then i was told that there's an organization called high tops that would have more information and it was me and one other parent you know that whole not a whole lot of parents interested actually in this um i encourage all parents to look at them on twitter follow them on twitter that's capital h lowercase i uh uppercase t ops they started their presentation by encouraging participants to introduce themselves by their pronouns because they believe that if you're born
a girl you become become a boy and vice versa hence you can change your pronoun i don't believe that alone many other things that they spoke of so i asked the principal actually now is nicer to go to pe person to opt my child out and i was grateful that i was given that option at the same time it wasn't ideal because my child complained that she was the only person who opted out later another student opted out but if her writing had provoked her conflict in my home um every home is different and every home has different beliefs when it comes to sex and beliefs evolve over time my own beliefs have changed today monday august 22nd i believe that sex should only happen between a man and a woman within a marriage that
is open to life i didn't always believe this but life happens heartache happens the grace of god happens and all those things have contributed to my stance and beliefs that i hold today that's why i don't get too upset from what i read on facebook parents page because i realize that we're all on a continuum when it comes to this topic some parents are okay with letting a public school teacher teach their fifth grader about masturbation some parents are okay with letting a public school teacher teach their eighth grader about anal sex being a parent is hard sometimes you just want to throw up your hands i haven't been to many board of education meetings lately partly because of this issue there was nothing i could say or do that could prevent these curriculum changes
and as my youngest child hopefully graduates high school in june my focus will switch to all the other outside influences that my son and daughters will encounter thank you any other comments or questions in the audience oh yeah so i i just encourage parents if you especially with little ones if if you feel like this curriculum is like going out of hand a homeschool healthy school not all catholic schools are you know aligned with this that either catholic [Music] i think at this point we are up to item 15.1 which is to move into executive session uh i believe we are moving under item number one three and that's it [Music] just one and three can i have a motion motion thank you mr bell a second second thank you mr minhaus all in [Music]
know the topic favor came up obviously each family like you said each family deals with it in their own way i i think that if what if you're if you have an issue with it i think we should write to the state and tell them exactly what we think of that's things that may be too far too young it is too far too young right the culture has shifted right shifted when we were in school this was two this was two three years past with these children has changed so there needs to be a writing campaign and that's where music goes we can't change that right but if you let the state know that it's something that you feel has gone too far too young correct then the state needs to know from you yes
and i just want to add though as a um school psychologist and dealing with you know children we also have to remember that this curriculum is it's based on where they are at their developmental level we're not you know again we're not going to be even when you do you know speak to children you're obviously going to address kids based on the you know based on their age based on what they think how their understanding is so that is something that we do have to remember and i think in overall i think the main idea of all of this is to really teach children because we do it and school is is the place where they are learning just like they have to learn to read to write um you do have to teach children
how to how to relate how to um how to be productive members how to be productive citizens and so that again starts you know when they're and again of course and school psychology that is the main thing that we look at you know that collaboration between the family and the schools because it does have to be a collaborative work right you know they go home you the families trust the schools to um with their children for so many hours of the day you know they go home so it is definitely a collaborative relationship um and again i think you want to just um learn more and kind of inform ourselves definitely you know what i thank you for for the comments and i you know the other member that was here unfortunately but you know
thank you for the comments for coming out here and speaking you know because that is important uh but also again i just would like to just encourage you to uh to really look at it as it's not it's not really and the curriculum the program that the district is going to be using again other districts are using and it's being used because it is again we're not going into like specifics and things like that i mean i know it's definitely you know uh um you know what concern but it it goes based on their develop where their where children are developmentally and that's how they're being you know taught the vocabulary that is being used is going to be based on you know you know their brain that's what they you know second fifth eighth
and and twelfth grade is where you know so again just um but definitely ask questions so thank you for the comments that were made and guys just to bring us back to procedurally you know we didn't move a motion and had a second so i think at this point we have to stop discussion on other items not that i want to see you know fruitful discussion ended but you know just to stick back to robert's rules here um i believe we're journaling to executive so we should be back hopefully in the next fifteen all right you're unmuted so we are back in open session here at this point i would like to move that we had the following resolution uh whereas the founder board of education has conducted a hearing with respect to an appeal
of a report on a harassment intimidation and bullying investigation bbhs 2022-19 and whereas the board has heard from the parent officials with respect to the investigation and the recommendation of the superintendent and whereas the board has determined that there is no basis to disturb the recommendation of the superintendent with respect to the findings and conclusions made with regard to the good matter now therefore be it resolved as follows the country court of education hereby affirms the recommendation of the superintendent and directs that the superintendent notify the parents in writing of the board's decision we need a motion do we need a motion we need a motion we need a question [Music] are you correct yes yes so we are up to item number 17.1 resolved at the board of education uh bamboo board of education
approves the resolutions as outlined in approval of hiv cases under mill and elementary schools this is 17.2 and 17.3 have emotion motion thank you mr zumko a second second i'm going to give it to mr powell uh can we have a roll call please mr obama yes yes [Music] uh item 18.1 result that we address so i move people would like to second second miss deposit all right thank you very much
