027the last couple of months she is a student at Veterans Memorial Middle School and is part of the running for Heroes initiative I'd like to introduce and bring to the Mike Morgan Bland Morgan thank you hi everyone I'm Morgan Bland and I'm a seventh grader at Veterans Memorial Middle School and tonight I'm here to thank the Board of Education as well as our Brick Township School District for supporting me in the organization that I run for the organization that I'm a part of is called running for Heroes and what they do is they take kids from around the United States and they have a Shrum one mile in honor of every Fallen first responder that passes away in the line of duty and is founded three years ago by a kid named Zechariah who is
028now 14 years old and he's run over a thousand miles in the past three years I'd like to thank all of um the Board of Education and Brick Township School District for allowing me to use the lake Riviera Middle School to run my miles and honor our fallen First Responders I've always wanted to be a canine police officer since I was six years old so for me to be able to do this and honor the Fallen First Responders has meant a lot to me so I could bring some hope back to the family of our fallen officers so thank you all for that thank you you should be you should be commended Morgan um we see it on Twitter I know Mrs triantopoulos actually uh ran with you on on one night and you're getting
029a little bit of a gathering right a following so I think that's a very commendable of you to bring that to everybody's attention such a worthy cause thank you thank you Morgan I I am going to get out there and I promise you I'm going to run with you you might have to help me along but I will run with you you're doing a wonderful thing thank you so much and I'll have it with me that's right that's right if I'm running he's running um real quick before we move on to the next thing um Mr blandina uh had a presentation to the rstc each year as the uh as I hosted the Columbus Day praying time festival past several years and we'll speak a little bit more about it later uh Brick Township students
030help us out a chair one of those organizations is the ROTC at this time I want to present them with a check uh a donation towards their causes uh for what they do for us what happens is this year I'm proud to say Brick Township had more than 35 students there based on what I can see helping out carrying the banners carrying American flag it's very important uh they know the procedure unfortunately sometimes I don't have enough people to carry the American or the Italian flag so we have a procedure the people that pay for the prey to go on the banners have to go in because that's the sponsors uh then we go to the American flag then we go to the Italian fight this year we're fortunate to have enough to get the
031American flag and all the banners held and uh in great part to the ROTC here in Brick Township they held the American flag with the ROTC members of the Toms River ROTC so I want to thank them and present this check for them for their time and effort and hopefully we'll see them out next year and other school organizations thank you very much thank you Mr blandina and we'll hear more about that um later we're going to go into a presentation so I just wanted if anybody was going to leave at this time it's going to be about an hour presentation I didn't I figured Morgan probably has homework um but I put it back to Dr Farrell thank you I hope it's not an hour um I'm going to give Dr Anderson some props
032because we literally got the template from the state um not to be a little pessimistic about our state and our department of Ed and Board of Ed but everything seems to come last minute lately on a myriad of things including templates and what needs to be reported out you know obviously prior to covet and we're getting back to that every October you would report out on test scores that usually got in the end of the summer the last time we had the NJ SLA was spring of 2019 even prior to me and prior to covid and we took them last sprig and prior to Dr Anderson and we took them last spring as well for the first time since then and obviously the state last minute says you know you have to report out which
033we're going to do I will say like I've said many a times here this is our new Baseline um we you know covet is over we have a baseline score from last spring right that's the same assessment we can argue about the assessment the cut scores the type of the assessment the department of Ed requirement of assessment but at the bottom line this is our baseline from last spring and we will have to compare ourselves to ourselves to see how we improve hopefully a lot better from our original Baseline so without further Ado Dr Anderson uh we'll speak to that now I know there's a lot of slides but bear with us this is actually the slides you have to have I am told from the template so Dr Anderson thank you Dr Farrell so
034my name is Dr Anderson I'm the director of curriculum and instruction for the Brick Township School District and each October as Dr Farrell said the Department of Education requires districts to report State summary results to the community in accordance with the federal guidelines the njdoe requires districts to report three test results those results are the New Jersey student learning assessments or njsla the dynamic learning map or dlm or and the assessing comprehension and communication in English state to state or access parents receive these individualized student reports for these Assessments in September and October so whenever we receive state data or any form of data we begin with the description of of how we analyze that data let me Begin by sharing with you our process so this administration of 2022 will become our Baseline data
035we knew that the pandemic caused that the pandemic caused learning loss and this comparative data will show us in what areas we need to concentrate our resources three levels of analysis occur the district school and classroom levels the curriculum Department my team looks at the overall data from a district perspective analyzing strengths and weaknesses by the sub claims in each content area we plan curricular interventions and professional development and we collaborate with school teams to create action plans that include a grade level and Department goals and we meet monthly to track our progress at the classroom level teachers evaluate those results from the previous school year and said individual growth targets for their current students so let's start with the English language arts or Ela results 4036 students in grades three through nine took njsla
036Ela this bar graph shows the percentage of students who scored at each level of proficiency from one to five ranging from level one not meeting in blue to partially meaning in light blue to level three approaching in yellow to meeting and exceeding expectations in Green in levels four and five respectively this first bar graph shows the District results in comparison to the state results as you can see by the graph grade 3 had the lowest level of proficiency and grade 7 had the highest percentage of proficiency when compared to the state after analyzing the grade level performance in ALA across the district we analyzed the proficiency Levels by school and met with the school leaders and data teams to create targeted goals based on their data teachers analyzed the data to make adjustments to their
037program for their incoming students here is the ELA proficiency level for grade 3. here is the ELA results by proficiency level for grade four by each School and this slide shows the ELA results by proficiency level for grade five for each School sorry uh here are the LA proficiency levels for grades six to eight High School finally this slide shows the ELA results by for proficiency level for grade nine or each School and so after we do the ELA analysis by school we then move on to our subgroups as a district we analyze subgroup performance by grade level in each content area the key shows the percent of students who met or exceeded expectations in each subgroup the district average is represented in blue the economically disadvantaged subgroup is in red students with disabilities subgroup
038is in yellow and the English language Learners or ell subgroup is in green and that's Ela three through nine so our response to this data falls into the following categories intervention computer adaptive programs targeted instruction and professional development we have added Ela interventionists who provide targeted instruction while continually monitoring student progress and goal setting we're using adaptive instructional computer programs such as Lexia Core5 and Achieve 3000 to Target individual student needs the subclaim data shows the need to improve writing skills which will be addressed in the various levels through writer's Workshop writing focused pacing guides and writing and content area subjects since the writer's workshop model was implemented during covet years our teachers require additional professional development so we added six additional training sessions to assist with the implementation the district is committed to providing
039high quality professional support through our district literacy coaches who help teachers analyze data plan standards-based lessons Target student needs and model effective implementation of best practices so next we move on to the njsla math we compared the proficiency level of students in grades 3 through 5 4065 students took the njsla math assessment levels four and five are represented in green level three is represented in yellow and levels two and one are in blue this slide shows proficiency levels for grades three through five are below the state mean this slide shows the math proficiency levels for grades six to eight compared to the state at the middle school level the district scored above the state in both 7th and eighth grade this slide shows the math proficiency levels for the algebra and geometry assessment compared to
040the state the district scored above the state in both algebra and in geometry next we disaggregated the math data by grade level and school this slide shows grade 3 data school-based data teams analyze the state and set growth goals third grade teachers will use this previous year's data to make adjustments to their program and pacing for the current students here's grade 4 data broken down by levels of proficiency for each School fourth grade teachers engage in two levels of analysis they'll make program and pasting adjustments based on the data they will also use the grade 3 data to set growth goals for their current fourth grade students the same process of program evaluation and goal setting occurs at every level this slide shows grade 5 math data broken down by school and this slide shows
041six to eighth grade math data broken down by the levels of proficiency for each School students took the algebra assessment in grade 8 and high school here are the levels of proficiency for each School we scored above the state at average on the algebra assessment this slide Compares geometry proficiencies by school both schools scored above the state average in geometry lastly this slide shows the percentage of students scoring proficient by subgroup and math compared to the district percentage and so here are the interventions strategies that we used in math to respond to this data um we implemented I already met through classroom mathematics last year this program requires a two-year implementation to support the instructional shifts associated with the try discuss and connect routine this rigorous instructional routine provides students with opportunities to receive persevere
042in problem solving evaluate one's thinking and compare different mathematical representations to fill in the gaps caused by the pandemic we're using personalized digital platforms such as mypath IXL and get more math to Target students individual needs academic coaches and interventionists work closely with teachers to plan for targeted instruction and to monitor student progress we also introduced data chats to empower students to set goals and track their progress which increases student ownership of learning at the secondary level students will have extra support in the area of algebra through and after school Intervention Program to Target subgroup performance in ela and math the district has strengthened our multi-tiered system of support by adding intervention coordinators at each level we have purchased computer adaptive programs and implemented a mentoring program additionally we have extended day programs enrichment clubs
043and our summer spark program now on to science the ngsla Science assessment was administered to 1 910 students in grades 5 8 and 11. unlike njsla be unlike njsla Ela and math science scores are reported in four levels ranging from one below proficient to two near proficient to level three proficient and to level four Advanced proficient this slide reflects grade level performance compared to the state here are the grade five science scores disaggregated by performance level and school here's the comparison of grade 8 and 11 by performance level and school foreign this slide compares the percentage of students who scored proficient in science for each subgroup compared to the district percentage so in response to this science data we are providing teachers with greater support to implement inquiry-based science units and engineering design challenges students
044will continue to utilize inkets at the middle school level which is software to engage science to engage students in science simulations where they State a claim provide evidence and make connections to Scientific principles at the middle school level the open Syed curriculum was implemented during the pandemic teachers are receiving additional professional support to implement these rigorous units at the high school level all final exams for course courses have been redesigned to include standards aligned assessment tasks from the New Jersey digital item Library we're also using gizmos a digital resource to give students an opportunity to analyze data to solve a phenomena based problem our academic science coach supports the implementation of District programs by providing professional development focused on instructional routines and by creating supplemental resources aligned to the assessment next is access access for
045Els else is an English language proficiency assessment administered to kindergarten through 12th grade students who have been identified as English language Learners the purpose is to monitor students yearly progress in developing English language proficiency across four domains listening Reading Writing and speaking last spring 435 students took the access test the test is administered online and students receive a proficiency level on a scale from one entering to two to six reaching students are eligible to exit the program when they obtain a score of 4.5 this chart shows the percentage of students scoring at each English language proficiency level one through six within each cohort K to 2 3 to 5 68 and 9 to 12. as you can see from this graph the majority of our ell students so scored in the developing stage or level
0463 represented in yellow 61 percent of the Ells who took the 2022 access were in the ell program for two years or less students are expected to grow approximately one level each year for up to five years research shows that Els take approximately three to five years to develop oral language proficiency and five to seven years to develop academic English proficiency 35 students were able to exit our ell program achieving an English proficiency level of 4.5 or higher we use the access data to provide ell or limited English proficiency students with targeted support throughout the school year and summer intervention strategies are offered for students through practice materials small group instruction extended prayer extended day program offerings and summer program opportunities professional development is available for all teachers with Ells through online sheltered English instruction
047training and support from our ESL coach research resources are also provided for bilingual ell families to be able to help their children at home with academic work the last assessment is the dynamic learning map assessment Dynamic learning maps are an alternate assessment for special education students who do not take njsla the assessment measures where students are with regard to the grade level Target not all students will perform at the Target level and that is to be expected teachers provide instruction beyond what is reflected in the students learning Pro profile including other academics functional skills and other priorities identified in the IEPs this slideshow this slide shows results of dlm ela for the 56 students who are assessed in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11. the district is at the state average for students scoring
048Advanced or at Target and we have fewer students at the lowest level where the state than the lower level at the lowest level than the state has in the 2022 administration of the dynamic learning map 55 students were assessed in mathematics in grades three through eight and eleven of the 55 students 31 percent of students scored at Target or Advanced levels which is above the state average this slide shows the DML results for 22 students in grades 5 8 and 11 who are assessed in science and this slide shows all the support and interventions that special education department has implemented based on the dlm and data we have we offered an English compensatory education program we had extended day programming targeted support and guidance by the special education academic coaches targeted professional development for teachers
049who administered the dlm specialized curricular materials that addressed skill barriers in a line with grade level Essential Elements we administered the dlm instructionally embedded assessment to help teachers integrate the assessment within their classroom instruction and our science coach supported teachers in our special education classroom so in summary we do know that the pandemic hit some communities harder than others many of our own parents couldn't work from home and so many of our students really and our family struggled through the pandemic our S2 Cuts increased our class sizes which required Us in to use a hybrid learning model instead of being able to bring all of our kids back to school we had to do team a team B with kids being virtual and in person we do know that the wealth of the community is
050the strongest data point aligned to test scores and our increase of nearly two percent in economic hardship translated to an increase in Title 1 funds so we were able to add seven new ell positions which will enable us to address the needs of our ell population which is almost tripled the substitute crisis and Staffing shortage is subsiding but we still need more subs so please if you know anyone who'd like to sub for Brick schools please have them contact the the board office we really really love for them to sub for us Rick is performing on par with districts in similar size and demographics the state used to report out data in District Factor groups but they don't do that anymore but those District Factor groups still exist and when you look at schools districts
051in similar size and demographics we score score on par with them we're excited by this Baseline data because it's going to enable my team to measure our impact since this is our first njsla Administration and the greatest impact from a curriculum standpoint I believe on this data is the implementation dip from not 23 new programs but three new programs it's a typo um and so just just to give you an idea this is a little timeline in 2018 19 um I came aboard on the summer of 2019. and many of my team members of my team did we used the results from that here's njsla data to create a plan that plan required us to replace our reading curriculum math curriculum and our science curriculum and unfortunately the pandemic occurred and so we were in
052PR the process of changing those curricular resources and that that had an impact I believe on on our scores change management expert Michael fullen refers to a drop in performance and confidence as the implementation did so the phenomenon that occurred this is a phenomenon that occurs as one encounters an innovation that requires new skills and new understandings it's really well documented in educational research and so when we we think of that that's an additional factor that affected brick schools um and our students uh performance another factor that contributed to it was the pandemic itself because you couldn't sustain the energy and focus on the initiatives when you were busy you know contact tracing and there were so many students who were absent from class uh because of because of illness or staff members who were
053ill um so what's that you know that's what the research says that's what Michael fullen would say in terms of educational research but what does that look like like with real numbers what do I believe that that would show in our in our data so remember teachers as well as students were not familiar with the new program so if both teachers and students had increased knowledge skills and confidence I think our results would have been stronger here's an example of how many students scored in the 740 to 70 49 range 750 is proficient so if those students in those categories scored just one or two questions correct they would have scored in the proficient range and we would have been above the state average in three areas and met the state average in another area
054at the elementary level so I think that that had a significant impact so in in Broad terms what does that look like so in terms of broad goals each school will set growth targets for all content areas grade levels and subgroups based on their data but in terms of broad goals we're going to increase the rigor at the high school level we're have expanded our dual enrollment program and the number of students taking the AP exam we're going to increase our student growth outcomes on njsla Ela through an instructional focus on writing and informational text domains that's where our data is weakest and it was always our strongest area so we really feel confident that that will increase in terms of increasing student growth outcomes in math we're going to be focused on major content
055and modeling major content is the grade level curriculum so when you're receiving students who have deficits from you know from a disrupted uh learning and for two years you could you would know that the teachers would take their time in remediating that that weakness before they were able to tackle all that grade level content so we're we're hoping that we're Bridging the gaps with our interventionists and with their support we are we're going to meet the students where they are and using those computer adapted learning uh platforms like my path that we'll be able to see some growth in major content and modeling we also want to increase student growth outcomes in science through a focus on investigating sense making and critiquing it was really hard to do that this type of science test requires
056it's not memorization it's not a collection of facts it really requires a lot of analytical thinking and simulation and interpreting data and variables and so we're working through that our open Syed curriculum and giving teachers more practice and support with that we believe that that will also help our science results so 422-23 we worked in a strategic planning process these became our goals to engage students with high interest standards-based lessons that promote critical thinking and are relevant to the world around them that's our curriculum goal our instruction goal is to cultivate student-centered conditions for learning in order to meet the academic social emotional needs of each student through a system of support and enrichment and our assessment goal is to accelerate student growth by empowering students to take active role in their learning by setting
057goals and tracking their progress we are committed my team and I and I would like to thank them our super soups as we call them our Chad Cuts Chad want to give a wave um he's our secondary Ela and social studies supervisor Amanda Beatty she is our elementary math science and Title One coordinator K-12 our elementary Ela social studies and K-12 ell supervisor and Mary Kane and chat and Christopher Thompson is our secondary math supervisor and uh STEM Academy Co advisor the supervisor and College and Career Readiness and business education and all of the other areas 6 through 12 and Jennifer Lane who could be with us today but she is our K-12 Visual and Performing Arts and secondary science and co-supervisor of the STEM Academy as well as Rachel Goff who's our elementary special
058education supervisor they along with our academic coach led the analysis and response to this data and created help create the presentation so professional learning communities have three characteristics a shared Vision collaborative culture and Collective responsibility our leaders our teachers staff and students have a shared Vision to increase student achievement by working collaboratively collaboratively and by taking responsibility remain committed to improving student achievement and to accelerating student growth in an engaging safe and nurturing environment so thank you thank you it wasn't 80 slides or an hour I apologize Dr Farrell or anything you want to add before I move on or no I did think it would I again I I want to give kudos because this came to us very late and the analysis is still ongoing um so and I know literally up until
059maybe half an hour ago kind of editing and adding some things thank you I need a motion and a second for the approval of minutes I'll approve that those minutes Michael will you approval where you give me a motion okay thank you we'll need a second call Melita any board comments saying none Mary um I need to abstain for the September 8th executive session but yes to the rest Mr blandina yes yes Kennedy I will abstain from them all right yes to all yes okay reports um I just have a few brief comments I'd like to make tonight um I would like to welcome our student Representatives Ava and Andrew we're thrilled to have you here and we thank you for your commitment to your schools and to our district our students staff and administrations
060are working hard this school year and have already hit the ground running this fall which is always a busy period for administration and the Board of Education leadership meetings I would like to highlight three recent meetings Dr Farrell and I attended and presented at the Ocean County School Board Association meeting on October 3rd the purpose of these meetings is to enhance Knowledge and Skills of local Board of Education members and serve as an information subject matter sharing opportunity this exchange of information and ideas often serves as a catalyst to expedite action and implementation Dr onai Dr Farrell and I presented on superintendent Board of Education relationships we reviewed our respective roles the board being a policy making governing body who hires and evaluates the superintendent and sets the budget parameters and is a conduit to
061the community while the superintendent implements and administers the day-to-day operations the discussion was Lively and our fellow County Board of Ed members really respected the working relationship we have with Dr Farrell Miss McNamara and I attended conference calls on October 10th which was a school holiday thank you for giving up a portion of your day Miss McNamara and October 13 regarding the future of Our school-based Youth Services Program I'm going to let Miss McNamara go into more details about this extremely critical District program and where we are and what's coming down the pike during her committee report I would like to say one thing Brooks School Brook schools is an inaugural School District in this program and we've been in this program for over 20 years 22 to be exact the state unsuccessfully attempted to
062remove funding in 2020. now they are trying a different attempt at taking the funding away we cannot lose this program our students depend on it Dr Farrell Dr Anderson Mike blandina and I attended the Ocean County Italian Festival performance at Brick Township High School on October 7th Mr blandina who also serves on the committee for the Italian Festival will give an event summary later tonight on the performance that took place at both high schools I wish we had the video because I got to tell you Dr Anderson you are quite the dancer [Laughter] finally VOE updates on behalf of the Board of Education I want to recognize and thank the 10 applicants who applied for the open Board of Education position last month it was a difficult decision you all brought so many different and
063unique skills to the table yet there is a single consistent trait that stood out in each candidate it was very apparent your true commitment to our students staff and Community we hope you consider participating with our strategic planning committee which can always use community members input although we are wrapping up the base strategic plan and it will be presented soon hopefully january-ish we're looking at um please remember that this is a fluent document so a continued Community engagement is essential last but certainly not least I would like to welcome and congratulate Ali Kennedy to the board we look forward to your contributions and unique voice on The Brick Board of Education and one last thing speaking of engaged I want to thank the audience members here tonight and those attending virtually our community should be
064proud that we have a community that we have community members who attend and listen to our meetings stakeholder involvement is important and necessary part of our process it makes communities and school districts stronger and a better place to be I'm proud of the transparency and openness of our community members and board members and our willingness to share with each other our thoughts and ideas I can tell you firsthand we are available to support and answer Community questions at any time thank you Dr Farrell thank you Miss wilrop this morning I attended our my monthly County superintendent's meeting and there was a representative of Christian Kane from Field of Dreams in Toms River which I got to visit a few times which is amazing I I encourage anybody here to go visit the Field of Dreams
065it's by the Toms River Dover Township Toms River Township Police Station um what an amazing Mission Field of Dreams is a Community Park complex that engages physical and social activity for those with special needs with a focus on providing opportunities for individuals of all ages and abilities to socialize together brick schools has been there for field trips I think we had one recently and have another one um and is continuing to utilize the facilities for our students it's an amazing story and I encourage you to visit the complex visit their website and help in any way you can for their plight the week of respect for 2022 was October 3rd through October 7th with a focus on respect for all kindness empathy and reflection I was able to speak on a video with Mr Mosley
066on empathy and respect for others each of our schools coordinated a myriad of events to recognize and celebrate this week across the district our PTA pto's work with building administrators to sponsor age-appropriate events for the students to focus on respect we are truly thankful for our partnership with our parents students and staff and community members I did you stole my funder a little bit I attended the Ocean County Italian Festival performance at Brick Township High School on October 7th thank you Mr blandina who serves on this committee for the Italian Festival who I guess helped facilitate this in the past and kind of brought it back here to Brick high and yes Dr Anderson got to show off some of her dance moves I don't know where I was when I was asked again you

069education student representatives from Brick Township High School Andrew Kelly I'm from brick memorial uh Ava Scanlon these two outstanding students were selected by their school to represent the student body at our board meetings we're pleased to have them uh with us for the school year and look forward to hearing the great things that are happening in the schools throughout the year I got to meet each of them earlier this gosh it was yesterday wasn't it was it earlier this week yesterday morning I got to find out a little bit about each of them Andrew wants to go into Hospitality looking down south at Florida International right Ava's got about a hundred great nursing schools wants to get into nursing right and it's got our whole plan two amazing students very active very intelligent and I'm
070so happy like I said I've been able to have student representatives in the past at Boards of educations I worked with and it just brings a difference different atmosphere to board meetings so thank you for that um many times in an organization we see management giving directives and not leadership providing a vision I believe that it's so important to have employees who want to be here and be part of something bigger than themselves providing a vision is key to an organization's success the vision needs to be deeply rooted in the why with a clear road map forged by purpose process and measured by results one of the greatest responsibilities of leadership is to provide members of the organization with a Clear Vision the why of the organization and have them connect their individual Department learning
071community-wide to the organizational vision this translates into a commitment from all stakeholders students staff parents and community members it helps create an environment that Fosters a healthy healthy competitive striving towards organizational goals and objectives and a deep understanding of how they relate to the department or learning community goals and objectives as a whole Fosters an environment where an employee can focus on their why and their connection to the purpose and process of achieving the organizational goals and objectives at the district level and department and learning community level as well I say this because as we narrow down our strategic plan a major portion of that is student performance indicators which we will start to gear up and make some important objectives for us as a whole and it's important for all of us to be
072steering the ship in the same direction recently last week Dr Anderson gave me a quote it was a little posted on your computer that said and I quote every day focus on your purpose remember why you do what you do we don't get burned out because of what we do get burned out because we forget why we do it and that's a good Leader's role right to remind all of us of our Collective why as we strive to move forward from the challenges of the past two and a half years it's important now more than ever to come together as a team to navigate the many complexities of what lies ahead of us with a collective vision and passion and the best service to our students staff parents and community in the words of Simon
073sinek the challenge of the unknown future is so much more exciting than the stories of the accomplished past while we have many challenges to lie ahead of us we are confident in the vision of our team and the collective support of our community I share many of that because many times I know people look at my board of education messages as just to the community or to the Board of Education members but many of our employees and staff and administration come to these meetings and of course it's also videoed and live streamed to everybody um so this is my opportunity as well in my superintendent's comments kind of to speak to whole as a collective of such a big organization of what I really believe is the why of why we're all here and we
074talk about the many different department meanings outside of board meetings obviously um but I again I see so many administrators and people here tonight and I know we have our meetings coming up this week as well where we'll really drill down into some of the student performance issues as well so thank you thank you Dr Phil um Dr Anderson curriculum and instruction you're going to finish up the hour here right hey people don't know that my maiden name is Esposito so I am a good dancer Mr Blandy and I grew up in that culture oh do not post that do not yes I have it oh so the cni committee met on October 13th at 3 30 in attendance was Miss gaglerard Gagliardi Dr Farrell myself first I reviewed the items on this month's agenda
075which include travel and training field trips like to the Field of Dreams which my daughter by the way had Mr Kane as a teacher and she volunteered and helped build the field of dream last year and it was such a wonderful experience so all our classes are going all of our students are going it's not in one it's from our young youngest to our oldest right we had this one this agenda we added the rest to this month so there's the uh some parents had called they didn't realize that it was it was the entire District they were really excited about it so I wanted to make sure we said that it's wonderful I'm so glad we also had student teachers which we're always glad to host because again we're in a national teacher shortage
076so we are incur urged when kids from college are in our schools and our programs we have grandson tonight's agenda and volunteer clubs we also have extended day programs approval for those programs under HR using our Title One funds I gave the committee an update on the Green Team initiative we have a title IV funds that we'll be using to offer after-school student enrichment clubs to support School sustainability and green projects and each school will apply for the New Jersey sustainable schools Grant and participate in the township Green Fair we are also provided a stem update in our STEM Academy the the sustainability and the steam project is part of our where is it Mr uh Thompson grade 10 engineering design and innovation project we're so excited by the changes to our STEM Academy we
077have a stem Ambassador student leaders each High School's grade level cohort will elect a stem Ambassador similar to that of a Class A president or a club president a monthly digital newsletter will be created by the ambassadors with a to publicize to parents and Community Partners we have a new partnership with Hackensack Meridian ocean University Medical Center Family Medicine Residency director Dr Kelly Usery Crown house we're partnering our students with residents of her program to offer them unique stem aligned experiences at Ocean Medical Center we have residents who will support and evaluate our student research projects we also are refining our learning opportunities by offering a stem and career competition at each level we have Capstone projects in grade nine it's community health and medical career exploration in grade 10 it's engineering design and Innovation
078which is the steam tank in grade 11 we have the TSA technology Student Association competition and passion project proposal in grade 12. students have choice and that is their passion project here they get to choose the re their research um we sponsored a a colloquium an AP colloquium colloquium at Ocean County College um and our supervisor of science Miss Lane facilitated uh the science uh dialogue with the AP teachers that ran on October 4th we co-sponsored it with Lacey and our teachers loved it there were three sessions one was from school college board they did what was new in college on the College Board platform and then we had best practices and we had all of our AP teachers in the county and Ocean County and Monmouth County come together for that collaboration and it
079lasted from October 4th to the through the 21st so it was quite quite an initiative oc3 is the Ocean County curriculum Consortium two of our academic coaches Jennifer moniker and Michelle Pierce presented a workshop on student engagement at the OCC at the oc3 meeting in October it's a non-profit organization established to serve as a leadership Network for collaboration and professional learning it's focused primarily on enhancing academic achievement and expanding opportunities for students district and building administrators as well as aspiring leaders are invited to convene monthly to share dialogue and important issues surrounding curriculum and instruction we also launched the student portal students were provided with information about the importance of goal setting and this initiative aligns with our goal of helping kids uh track set goals and track and monitor their progress so that they
080can accelerate their learning by creating goals students take ownership of their learning they set goals for future learning they take action they monitor their progress toward their learning and so students can monitor their attendance their assignments and their grades in the portal which prepares them also for college so in terms of our assessments I shared an update that start strong would be completed uh by the end of October and I wanted to thank Jim Bayo who was able to set up reporting groups which made our results available immediately to our teachers they can use these results as a teaching tool and the district is expected to have those finalized reports once the testing is complete um in terms of our district professional day that was on October 10th and Pre-K staff participated in tools of
081the Mind training the elementary level teachers engaged in professional development and Ela math and social studies at the middle school level teachers met by Department to analyze data and use resources to meet the needs of their Learners at the high school level departments met to design rigorous standards aligned exams special education teachers received training and specialized programming and teachers AIDS participated in a menu of professional development options Visual and Performing Arts media World Language and phys Ed staff all engaged in horizontal collaboration and vertical articulation K-12 um the physical education department met on professional day to continue to design their Health and Family Life Lessons this work is continuing over the next few weeks and as previously noted we anticipate the parent guide will be posted soon before um parent-teacher conferences a Blackboard message will
082go out notifying parents that the parent guide has been posted in Parent Portal and at that time parents will have the opportunity to opt out electronically if parents have any questions they can reach out to the physical education teacher and or principal and these lessons will not be implemented at the elementary level until the end of the school year in terms of family engagement the cni department provided several activities for families this month Miss Kane our elementary and K to 12 ell supervisor hosted a bilingual ell Parent Academy on October 13th thus there was a special edition Elementary edition of The Brick Bridge focused on Elementary curricular resources that was published on October 14th and coming in November we have Veterans Day celebration it will be held at November on November 14th at Veterans Memorial
083Middle School the district will be doing a collection to send to our troops so if you know a veteran who would like to attend our celebration please have them reach out to Trudy at vmms um she is she coordinates it it's really a labor of love for her and she's done such an amazing job organizing the whole Community around a celebration of our veterans on November 1st we as Andrew stated we are the brick school district is hosting that form that Community Forum related to Substance Abuse and Mental Health for adolescents it's going to be 6 30 to 8 at Brick High School auditorium and so you know if you have students in grades six to eight attending they need to be accompanied by an adult by a parent but the event will feature Ocean
084County prosecutor and Dan duddy and really we are very committed to keeping our community safe so I'm really excited by that our next meeting will be on November 1st at 3 30. thank you Dr Anderson Miss McNamara policy and planning thank you Mrs walrav just to begin I'd like to start with just working from what Mrs woolrub said about the school-based Youth Services Program um school-based Youth Services Program was launched many years ago The Brick Township Public Schools has been in partnership with preferred behavioral health for over 22 years now we are one of 90 districts that receive the opportunity to have a school-based use Services Program if you're not familiar with it it is a program within our secondary buildings and they provide extra counseling support to our students in the form of programs
085like life skills lead and Seed teen Outreach power program freshman summer transition program peer leadership program youth prevention Coalition program and employment exploration in addition they run some after-school groups like Recreation group girls empowerment Club Community volunteer club and um and such they've also put on assemblies for our students in the areas of Suicide Prevention healthy relationships social skills bullying awareness and prevention mindfulness health and wellness Stress Management and test anxiety just to give you some of the statistics in terms of counseling they see approximately a thousand students per year in a group counseling mode they see um in an individual mode somewhere around 600 students per year they have participants in the healthy Youth Development 86 students participating in that learning supports the net net of it is they support and really provide wonderful
086programs and counseling for a good number of our students at the secondary level what the state is proposing is to disband all 90 school-based Youth Services programs as of July 1 and create hubs not for every District but about 15 hubs for the entire state that would have multiple districts applying to those hubs for services for our students it would remove those services from the direct line to our students in our community within our schools Partnerships and relationships that our school-based youth services counselors through preferred Behavioral Health have spent 22 years bonding and creating with our community we ask you to reach out to your representatives and continue to support the idea of school-based Youth Services programs within our schools to continue those most important relationships for our children for our parents and our community
087as a whole what we are suggesting is that they not disband the 90 programs but continue to support the idea of creating more school-based Youth Services programs in districts that do not have them and then if they still want to do hubs to provide hubs to provide additional support to those school-based youth programs within our schools that's the update on school-based use Services programs we hope that you'll take some time to support those programs Again by reaching out to your representatives the um the policy and planning committee met on October 13th at three o'clock in attendance was Mrs Hafner Mrs sieber Dr Farrell and myself we reviewed the following topics policy and regulation updates as you're aware we're moving from school boards to Strauss Esme this is a long process and we have had a
088lot of communication both with school-based Administration as well as the Board of Education as we continue to review those policies so that we can put them on a board agenda for a first read and then a second read and then post them to our district website we reviewed a little bit of that process with the committee and the committee now has the Boe policy committee now has the Boe bylaws for review and they're reviewing those we hope to get them on for a first read possibly by the November agenda if they need a little bit more time we'll have it on by the December agenda we also discuss the nursing plan this is a annual event for us we have to put together our nursing Services plan for the 2223 school year I'd like to
089thank all of our nurses in the district this is not an easy task they are required each year to provide important information which includes but is not limited to Emergency Response teams the location of our aeds and the health related concerns for each school this detailed report is kept at the board of education and we have to affirm for the county superintendent that we've updated our plan and so that is on the agenda for this evening we also have on the agenda for this evening the approval of the School Safety and Security annual review statement of assurances this is to assure that we have all of our safety plans in place over the summer we sent a number of Administrators from each of the schools to these off office of school preparedness and emergency planning
090in order to be trained in all of the new guidance they then came back and teams and worked with administrators in each of our schools and with each one of our departments to update our School Safety and Security annual plans those plans are now present within our Google system and this is a statement of assurance to let our County know that we've updated it according to new guidance we also have an approval The Brick Township Public Schools emergency virtual remote instruction plan for the school year 2223 no we are not going back to remote instruction however the state and its infinite wisdom has passed a law that says we have to have a plan in place so we're never back in the same position we were on March 13th of 2020 and that if we
091did have to go into any kind of school closure we would have a plan to do so we do not plan to do so unless we absolutely have to finally we have on for this agenda the acceptance of our Brick Township Public Schools HIV self-assessment for the 21-22 school year under the direction of Mr Mosley our HIV district coordinator along with all of our school-based coordinators they put together a self-assessment looking at eight core elements HIV programs training staff instruction and training programs curriculum and instruction HIV and related information skills HIV Personnel School level HIV incident reporting procedures HIV invest investigation procedures and HIV reporting every school scores themselves against the prior year so 2020 to 2021 the majority of our schools scored better in the 21 school year and that report will be available
092on our district website starting tomorrow additionally it also reports the type of training that took place in the 2122 school year again we were fortunate to have stress us may come on board all of our administrators and our HIV coordinators have been updated on the newest procedures we've updated all of our documentation our forms our letters and we are in the process of updating our district website to reflect all of the new guidance we do not have a new meeting scheduled for November but I will be getting a date out soon and thank you for this report thank you Miss McNamara um Mr Edwards facilities Finance thank you facilities committee met on October 11th uh Miss Wahlberg Dr Farrell Miss McNamara myself Melissa galliardi from speeds Architects Mr you're from Netta and Mr pecor our

099needed and so that project can proceed gray with bidding um midstreams air conditioning in osborneville elementary school air conditioning we were hopeful with the bid results that we received on October 12th that we'd be able to move some of those additional funds to these projects however after the bid results were received I'm not so certain that that's going to occur uh Herbertsville and osborneville parking lot reconfigurations both lots have received the additional striping and I currently review by facilities to verify their functionality future scope for reconfiguration is still being reviewed currently there's no funding mechanism available to move forward but will be considered in 2324 budget Lanesville Elementary School playground I informed the committee that the PO has been issued into the playground orientation and color scheme are currently interviewed by building Administration and special
100services and our next meeting for that facility is November 1st then we went to finance committee on finance committee we had Transportation supervisor Dale stapinski join us and our representative from versatrans which is the software system that we use for mapping and routing of the school buses throughout Brick Township um the representative from versatrans went over with the committee the features that are available and another program that they offer that we're going to look to in the future I also discussed with the committee the possibility of doing a bell schedule analysis which we're going to have a representative at our next committee meeting come discuss discuss that with us next to discuss the stabilization aid application there's still been no word on the 23 million dollar request that we've made for the 2324 budget we
101then discussed the 2324 budget and indicated that without stabilization Aid we are looking at a substantial reduction in the 2324 budget as compared to the 2223 budget uh date of next meeting is also a number first Edwards I'll be I will be brief we're going to be presenting 48 items and I just want to make a note that we did have to make some last minute changes to those items for anyone that noticed some were typographical lovers and others were continued if we want to call it negotiations for hiring and the last thing I just would like to point out is we do have many positions that are available throughout the district some are permanent positions and some are substitute positions as Dr Anderson had indicated earlier I just want to give a positive um
102shout out if I could I spoke to a number of recent graduates who I've begun their application process for ESS they're very excited to be able to come on board and substitute around the holidays and then into the spring semester when they have time if you know anyone that is a recent graduate that wants to be a substitute teacher or teacher aide the website is ess.com there is still time to be ready for the December break when kids come home from college so I would encourage them to do that also if you know anyone that is really looking for a part-time position where substituting may be available our bus drivers and transportation we do train for bus drivers we have been picking up more substitutes in those areas and we do we do like to
103hire from our substitute pool so you don't have to make a commitment to work every day you can work around your schedule and all positions are available through the human resources department on our website if you have anyone or anyone need some additional assistance getting started please feel free to to reach out to the HR department we'll do what we can to help you thank you thank you Mr glessler public comments this will be the first opportunity for public comments and will be for agenda items only the board invites thoughts and reactions on agenda items each participant is asked to give his or her name prior to making a statement all statements shall be directed to the presiding officer the board will not during the public portion of this meeting discuss matters involving employment appointment
104termination of employment negotiations terms and conditions of employment evaluation of the performance of promotion or disciplining of any specific or prospective or current employee and or student do we have anybody for public comment Mr finale you're it all eyes are on you check the clock quarter to nine I hope nobody's in the rush to go home tonight Mr blandina my good thing I'm going to start with you ready Yankee I'm sorry the timer up please thank you Yankees won five to one so they're they're in from from a New York City boy who went to school in the Bronx um I'm gonna do these a little backwards but we can answer the quick ones quick uh under Human Resources when somebody's on military leave we don't pay them because it says without pay with benefits
105go ahead keep going oh you can't answer that one okay number 45 and 48 I'm just curious as to what was amended in the contracts we don't normally have that many contracts amended the SLA presentation can we question that now or that was an agenda item but yeah do you have a couple quick questions I'm just curious as to what the superintendent's expectations are I saw the word increased increase increase what are you looking for what's your thing and the other thing unfortunately close only counts and Horseshoes and Hand Grenades so good because you know it's close to doesn't mean anything you know if the football team loses 19 to 18 they lost in the story all right and uh the last the last one I only have three tonight I have more at the
106end uh just clarification on number 18 on operations uh this has to do with the preschool Monday if I read this correctly 273 thousand dollars was not spent at the money allocated you're asking for the money to be spent somewhere else and I just have a couple of questions one of the things you want to spend the money on is more supplies but if I look at the supply line you understand that by eighty four thousand dollars so if you needed more supplies why didn't you buy them uh the other area where you uh saved a lot of money was in family and parent liaison okay and then the other area was instructional equipment you had a budget of a hundred and fifteen thousand dollars and you spent nothing could you explain that that's it
107okay Dr Farrell um why don't we start with that um and Mr Edwards can help me on the Pre-K money I think we're asking for the rollover on that money and there's a lot of issues not issues a lot of things that we didn't spend this year whether it's due to lack of resources in pre-k or special ed services or we might have utilized idea money but that Pre-K grant money if you don't use in one year you send to the state of request to carry it over for the following year you want to answer I mean that's pretty much what the request is on the board agenda so the the request is to our choices are one we didn't use the money so we can give it back to the state or two we
108can request to keep it and spend it here on our preschool program so we chose two yeah yeah they normally let you do that yes yes okay and especially with the grant the way you have to really be detailed on what you submit and what you actually use my other question was if you needed more supplies why didn't you spend the money I don't know that detail to be honest it could be less classrooms you know when you budget for certain classrooms in the Pre-K depending on the number of classified students and the number of gen ed students that it's an inclusion class I don't know that answer to be honest uh with the detail on that um I I also I know you asked about military leave wagability I didn't know if that was
109a military leave or a regular leave I know you get credit in the state and Department of Ed for military time but all leaves that go through the state are standard leaves of absences that you can either utilize your existing sick days or not you want to add to that right if an employee let's just say if an employee did not have a personal day to utilize they would be requesting a leave without pay if it was something health related they had sick time to use if they did not have sick time they would request to leave without pay if the question is is there specifically military days that are provided we do not provide Military Days okay let me give you my thoughts on that and what the rest of the world does all
110right you've got people volunteering for the military they don't have a choice it's not like well I need a personal day off because I want to do something they have to go serve the country and serve us most companies give the difference in pay in other words whatever they get for that day for serving in the military gets deducted off their their days paid and then the employer makes up the difference all right I don't think people my personal and I'm telling you spend money I don't do that often all right but I think the people that are in the military and they have to serve should get compensated and not lose the money I mean I just don't know if we have the ability into the regs but I agree with you so well
111maybe you should look into it then okay thank you oh and uh so NJ SLA um so first of all uh at first glance of the scores um from the spring and I sat many many hours now with Dr Anderson it's it's our Baseline right you asked about expectations you also gave an example which Dr Anderson said you'd say it only clowns counts in horseshoes and if you know football team loses 18 17 they lost I thought you'd say that as well so I gave you that example if you remember a couple months back I said any statistics and then I'm going to talk about my expectations because we're kind of digging into it any statistics by Nature I think you're a statistics guy I know I am is comparative by Nature what does that
112mean I mean if someone says you know a hundred's a large number a large number unless you compare it to either a smaller and that's higher if I said to you Brick Township High School's football team lost 21-7 last night you said they lost and I said they lost to the New York Giants you'd say that's a little different isn't it that's pretty darn good so statistics are comparative by Nature we all know that right um so what I have seen and look at a national Transit State train I'll talk about the positive first we did a lot better in middle school math compared to the National and state average that I thought we were because that's been a really Egypt since covid if you look I think I've reported out a couple times talking
113about the Stanford study the Columbia study I think was sixth or seventh grade math we actually did better what was disappointing was our Ela scores in Elementary in grades three through five now it is also Statewide and and I don't know if it's National I haven't really dug into that analysis but when you look at students story I'm sorry you have to start with a not only a baseline of scores but a baselines of a child's education we all talk that it all starts with Ela sorry to the math and the science and everybody else did it starts to the LA because if you can't read and write you can't look at word problems right specifically Ela reading and reading comprehension and then writing that's where everything's got to start from early ages right and
114then we get into math and obviously the sciences and and some other things it's important that our elementary Ela improve and you asked me my expectations and we're digging down and we're going back and forth about actual percentages that I'll actually present to the board we need to improve so big picture we need to improve on Elementary Ela we want to improve on middle school math though we have did a pretty good job on that and we want to improve on our more College dual enrollment and advanced placement testing attendance on the high school level as Mrs Granger who I see is in the audience comes in with our special services department we're actually going to drill down even further for the for those subgroups of classified students with the dlm testing I said you've
115I said to you from the get-go when we started um uh when I started I think I was on a job two weeks and then covet hit and I really told our administrators over and over again I didn't back then I didn't want to talk about testing and stos for teachers and compliance in Cusick I really didn't we're in crisis management mode well that time's over and I've been delivering that that message and I'll deliver it again Thursday I see some of our principles here but yeah they matter and keeping score matters not only am I competitive we have to do better we will do better and we'll use this Baseline accordingly but I will start delivering that tough message now that okay guys you know a game is on and the scoreboard's on and
116uh we have to look at that so if you're looking for detailed expectations the only thing I could say is the real thorough analysis has not been done yet on my part okay and my last question was 45 to 48 it was amended contract for that's just was those of wordings because they're unaffiliated if I'm 48 word okay thank you thank you any other public comment on agenda items seeing none will close that Dr Anderson curriculum and instruction thank you Mrs walrab under curriculum instruction the superintendent recommends that a board approved the following items one through eight I need a motion in a second I'll make that motion Michael second Victoria any bored comments uh she's the mouth opened Victoria do you have something to say before I just want to say overall I thought
117this agenda was really really impressive and um the achievement and the opportunities for our students in this special programs and Grant programs app Grant applications are all really really terrific and um I just thought that the field trip was a real impressive lineup for Ed opportunities for all of our students and I think that's a changing course that we've taken as a district and I think our students are are are more than benefiting from it and um I just want to keep encouraging our teachers to put in those um Grant applications I'm excited to see what the Holocaust Education Foundation grant money will bring to our high school students and that's all thank you Victoria any other comments seeing none Mary yes Mr blandino yes yes Miss Kennedy Kennedy while I do read the agenda
118I was not privy to any conversations about any of the things going on so I'm going to have a scene tonight Miss McCullough yes yes Mr Edwards operations yes hi the superintendent recommends items two through ninth I'm sorry three through 19. I need a motion in a second motion Nicole second Daisy any board comment being none Mary yes abstain on our number three ID uh one two six two yes on everything else Escape priority yes again I'll abstain tonight yes operations number three ID number 8927 and ID number um vendor ID number one two zero two zero I am abstaining um everything else is yes Mr kleisler Human Resources thank you Miss walrab tonight the superintendent recommends to the board under Human Resources items one through 48. I need a motion in a second I'll
119make that motion Michael second Victoria any board comments yes I just wanted to say I was looking at the tuition reimbursement list and it's just so impressive the way our faculty and administrators continue their ongoing professional um education and advancement and I I just wanted to give a real shout out to uh doctor now Dr Brett Novick who um contributes so much to our district and I know it's um through his pursuit of of excellence in all things and um that's good any other bird comments no Dr Farrell and I were talking about the same thing we liked seeing that um Mary vote Miss Hefner yes Mr blandina yes I'll abstain yes yes yes um we do have I believe some folks in the audience who we hired as new hires yes could you stand
120and be recognized please welcome to the brick school system oh Victoria I'm sorry no I was just going to say now that we passed the um uh approved and ratified the amended contracts for some of our in administrators and supervisors um I I just can't say enough how much they can contribute to our district Mrs Roberts Mr peculio and Mr pinski and um I was interested to read their contracts and see that they get time for lunch and I thought to myself I can't imagine any of them ever taking a lunch period so anyway I do appreciate all the efforts they make on behalf of our kids thank you Miss God Miss McNamara policy and planning thank you Mrs walrab under policy and planning the superintendent recommends that the board approved the following items one
121through four I need a motion in a second motion Nicole second Daisy any board comment being none Mary yes yes abstain yes this is the second opportunity for public comment each participant is asked to give his or her name prior to making a statement all statements shall be directed to the presiding officer comments shall be limited to five minutes and each speaker may only speak once the board will not during the public portion of this meeting discuss matters involving employment appointment termination of employment negotiations terms and conditions of employment evaluation of the performance of promotion or disciplining of any specific or prospective or current employee and or student do we have any public comment yes I did write a letter this month and I'll read it John Slicker 950 Sylvia Court September 22nd Dr Farrell
122Board of Education and administration I know from some of these meetings we have people show concerned about what might be taught in the future in public schools such as the New Jersey comprehensive sex education standards or critical race Theory but my question really relates to what's happening now and what has been happening basically the last 15 years concerning safety religion the three R's etc etc uh are we really spending as much time with the students on what was once called the three hours I'm a bit surprised how many people not only in Brick and people and adults not just children cannot do what I call Simple mathematics when I see a question such as how old am I written as 61 plus 4 divided by a quarter less seven get answers such as 55 maybe
123a 16 25 the cell holding makes no sense forget it I'm not doing any more math isn't my thing I wonder when we gave up on teaching mathematics I wonder if we gave this question out to now eighth grade classes here how many students would actually get it correct uh the next thing I wrote was my next question concern to schedule for the school years not this year next year uh and if it's confusing don't worry I'll go over it where you've looking at this year's schedule calendar it shows a variety of holidays school holidays Rosh Hashanah Yom Kippur Columbus Day election day Thanksgiving President's Day Memorial Day it might be a few more I skipped looking over those holidays there is a fall break a winter break a spring break but because of changes
124made to either the wording or the Banning of religion from the schools only two religious style all days really remain on the calendar and I question why that occurs not saying whether or not we should make Christmas Christmas again or Easter Easter again but white of only two religious holidays on the schedule so if we remove these two religious holidays from the school calendar we will have we only have historic holidays teaches conventions or seasonal breaks and thus be able to end the school year a few days earlier if this was done this year as an example we could could have ended school on about June 15th which would allow for weekend graduations promotions dinner parties after their child graduates and allow the summer holidays just basically to begin a little earlier obviously that would
125also avoid one holiday at the end of the year it stretches this year out I think in preparation for next year this change should be at least considered thank you comments any other public comment if Mr Finelli we might make 9 30. I want to share information with you in case you don't know first off student that is now up to 1.6 trillion dollars put that in your mind in case you didn't know that what you probably don't know 22 percent of that is owed by people over 50 years old so when we talk about money you know why if you want to see what a great job the governor is doing for Education make sure you read his editorial on last Sunday's Asbury Park Press it'll tell you all about what he's doing okay
126here's what you're up against the State Board of Education there's 13 members on the board and they all have six-year terms four of those people are already over their six-year terms but they're still there all right but there's three new people coming those three new people are replacing the three that got kicked off because they didn't vote for the new State education program so the story there is if you don't vote the way the governor wants you to vote you're out now the three new people that are going on there and I don't know whether this is important or not um one of them works for Seton Hall one of them works for Rutgers and one of them works for Stockton College my question would be how come there's nobody going on there that's in
127the pre-k through 12th category it doesn't make any sense to me all right nobody going on there that's from Ocean County or from the southern districts I I and then the last thing is the the commissioner of of the education has been acting for two years we don't hasn't filled that position either so you're looking for support you're not going to get it um a comment on the edtpa right they want to do away with the test and the three hundred dollars and their rationale is and I quote the 300 fee is keeping people from going through to become teachers especially minorities well okay if the three hundred dollars is causing a problem get rid of the three hundred dollars but keep the test now I don't know what's going to happen lawyers still have
128to pass the bar doctors still have to pass the medical boards my granddaughter who just became became a cosmetologist just had to pass the state test I don't know whether the quality of teachers you're going to get that don't have to pass the test is going to go up down or stay the same my guess would be probably going to go down so that's something you need to be involved with um I'm crossing this out as I go okay there was also an article in I think today's paper about community colleges in some of the states starting educational programs that get teachers degrees that don't do that before and that and supposedly making it easier I don't know if we're doing it around here or not it's an opportunity okay and my question is my
129last one tell me about your reset rooms that's my only question oh the reset rooms Mary's laughing over there no that's that's um yeah you talk about the one that was um for the high school that we put in for staff yeah oh Dr King yeah Dr occasion yeah exactly Dr Kasia would you mind thank you so everybody can hear you that's listening in thank you I'll be back Dr Farrell smack Camaro Dr Anderson Board of Education thank you for bringing me up here uh Mr fanelli thank you for your question uh the recent room that's currently at Brick Township High School was a joint venture with a preferred Behavioral Health our school-based program uh often we focus on the mental health and wellness of our students we think it's a true priority to take
130care of the people that we service here in the Brick Township School District so the administrative team at Brook Township High School working directly with Dave siegert and the school-based youth service program collaborated on getting a space for staff to reset and maintain their Wellness during the day so the reset room in Brick Township High School funded by preferred Behavioral Health no local funds were used and that reset room it was all donated by prefer Behavioral Health and the supporting of our staff as we as Ms McMahon had said we have a very strong partnership with Behavioral Health and school-based Food Service program and they not only support our students but our staff in our school so when you walk in into the reset room you're immediately hit by the Ambiance the environment that's there
131you have a a projection of Serenity and nice Vibes going through music playing there's comfortable flexible seating for our staff and it's promoted as an area to really recharge and take a breath from the hectic day it is do you utilized either before after school or during prep time we out of our personal funds you know make sure that there's water and coffee and opportunities for staff to really have a chance to take a breath and reset before they go back to the work environment that's a little snippet of what the reset room is all about all right thank you that was just what we were talking about our school-based program that Ms McNamara just gave a report on Monday the state is um that's been in our school district for years for 22 years
132that they're actually trying to go in a different model that's the best way to say it that Miss McNamara spoke at length in her report out okay are these going in all the schools applications starting a little culture with the brick staff and uh there you go Mr Finelli let me say this isn't something like we thought it's going to be systemic and we want to do it across the district this was something kind of like when I was a principal we used to have on your off period we'd meet in some areas whether it was about a book play basketball outside after you know it's just that kind of camaraderie and um staff development I I'd say during times of Crisis that I think it's great to enhance the culture one so exactly taxpayers
133didn't pay for it no he just said preferred Behavioral Health and the staff were paying for the coffee and the water for it so just one comment on Miss McNamara's presentation I read the whole article about all of that and what the experts are claiming this is not me speaking this is what they're saying they're saying that they interviewed a lot of people students and whatnot and the students would prefer to ask for help outside the school district rather than inside the school district where that people they might know are getting that kind of help that's what they're saying so let me there's a huge superintendent's group actually miss McNamara has been going to it but I've been listening yeah the state dropped the ball to be honest on another thing because they said they
134were going to interview stakeholders on this they never talk to any superintendents or any of the 90 districts that have a school base what the state is trying to do and they're saying mental health is a priority especially for our students and they want to ramp it up but they're pulling out the out best now these behavioral health professionals that are not part of our district we just provide them with space so it's not like our counselor or our teacher and that's why it's worked so well here that's been provided for it now you say the students say that I'm telling you if you read the experts I know they said that you're sharing this information yeah there's an OP ad written was it Scott Fetter that put the opt-in to a superintendent up north
135who wrote a great op-ed talking about that they really don't have to study they're based in the study that we need more support services for mental health for students and what they're doing in their frame of mind I guess is saying we want to expand that but to do it in an efficient economic way we want to create 15 hubs Meanwhile we're going to pull out the ones that are in say these 90 districts that qualified that all we had to provide we didn't even budget for a bit was space where I'm in the buildings we have with them now if they pulled them out what happens I think it becomes almost an unduly uh lack of capacity for resources for us right so let's say they pull these behavioral health professionals out of our
136buildings that's going to add more capacity to our existing guidance councils and I think that would hurt us financially which we're not being affected now in it so um I don't think it's going to go down exactly to what I'm seeing lately I don't think it's going to go down exactly the way the state is planning um that's why Miss McNamara kind of promoted that out to people so you know look at it look at some of the opt-eds about it it will definitely hurt brick unless we are a hub and the hubs in our district for people who would help us as far as research hurt us as far as resources but I don't think they're answering the problem uh correctly and I'm watching a lot of superintendents kind of come together on it
137so these hubs are they gonna you think they're gonna go in school so they're going to go in and outside yeah they're not they're going outside we're going outside to an outside yeah that's what they think I know you're right you don't have a lot of friends out there in case you haven't figured that out yet and it's going to get harder you're out there I didn't hear out there I'm everything I read is like Jesus this is like there goes another gray hair and you know his head thank you thank you Mr fanelli any other um public comment seeing none word comment um Mrs skyglarty is that me hello yeah okay I'm sorry yes oh my god um I just um you know welcome to another meeting I want to welcome our student Representatives
138at the table with us um that sit with us it's an honor and a privilege to have our students coming back and sharing um their perspectives and all the great happenings that are taking place in their District I want to welcome Allie Kennedy to the Board of Education welcome welcome uh next Dr Anderson thank you for that lovely report um being on cni for six years I can say that um Dr Anderson and her team are very responsive they are the type of individuals that look at the data and they are making actionable steps towards that data sometimes we see data we're not happy with it but we need to make actionable steps and this team over here have had the privilege to work you know alongside them and to see them and they are
139out there grinding with their sleeves up so I want to thank Dr Anderson and her team because they are the best with the leadership so our teachers and our students are in great hands with this leadership so thank you thank you um that reset room I mean that sounds fabulous we yes we take care of our students but our teachers and our Educators uh need some love into so that sounds like a wonderful thing that we are providing our staff in the high school so thank you um leadership team in the high school for thinking of your staff in that way I know they appreciate that um and last but not least I want to um thank this board of education and thank this team um try to be strong no tears here on my
140later um I you know it's no secret I am you know not running again for the Board of Ed and it's not because I don't love this district and I love this community it's just you know sometimes it's like passing that baton off and serving students in a different capacity I love and I am so grateful for this Board of Ed it is comprised of diverse individuals with their skills and their talents but one of the things that unifies us is the love and the compassion that we have for children and this brick community so I want to thank you for serving and thank you for you know welcoming me to this team I have grown and it has been I used to think you know being grateful what are the things you know I'm
141grateful for the list is getting bigger and bigger and being serving on this Board of Ed has been one of those things that is definitely on my list that I am grateful that I've had the opportunity to serve alongside and meet so many wonderful people that just love students that love this community and love education so thank you for that um thank you community for allowing me to serve I I love children and I love representing all of our children it is not an easy fight it is not an easy battle but the team that you serve alongside of makes that battle and it makes that um Journey so much better and so much sweeter so thank you for um being on my team thank everyone for coming out tonight and have a good night
142no um unfortunately Miss Gagliardi has um commitments with her children that will make her unable to attend the November and December meeting so that's why she's breaking all of our hearts here tonight yeah we'll we'll take her out but thank you Melita you will be missed yeah there's um she she mentioned it to me tonight so um God we've been working together a long time um okay you're not making me cry Daisy do you have anything nothing tonight um Victoria anything tonight or did you say it all during I I almost said it all okay I just wanted to welcome Andrew and Ava and I wanted to thank you Dr Anderson also and your team um so you did it six years I did it seven so far and I think this cni is just
143the most fabulous and under your direction Dr Anderson I just want to remark on the fact that your targeted interventions and your goals will only bring us onward and upward and you have the support of your team and our faculty has the support of your team and um I just I I I I'm glad to see the data and the report and I'm glad it's a baseline I'd I'd like to point out that those third second third and what was it third fourth and fifth or second third fourth and fifth those third graders have been in school for 15 minutes I mean they have not the those fourth graders you know they they were in school last year and um we were coming back from an extraordinary experience for them and for them to to
144even sit still and take those tests um I'm glad that I'm glad that uh we have you analyzing the data and and grinding through it all thank you very much Dr Anderson you're not so about yourself there Mandy baby thank you Victoria Mike yes I I want to congratulate the um student Representatives who joined us tonight as well as our new board member Ali Ali what I'm also going to talk about uh my baby I guess I could call it um you heard about it early from the student Representatives Dr Farrell and and uh president walrath uh the Ocean County Columbus Day parade and Italian Festival we've been fortunate I've been involved for 31 years with the uh parade in the festival but we've been fortunate the past several years first working with uh Mr
145kleister in the brick high school and then we moved over to brick memorial too and and this year was our best year because we're able to do the group groups came in a day earlier so we're able to do one day at Brick high school one day at Brick Memorial High School um and um these groups come in at no cost to the school system where the parade committee goes through sponsors uh throughout the year on feverishly raising the funding uh whether it's selling Raffles whether it's going after sponsors to sponsor the bands that I spoke about earlier that the ROTC helped carry in other brick organizations uh the indirect club uh the Italian Honor Society they all help banners they'll they'll get there a donation too from the praying committee we are fortunate that
146when we bring these groups in we don't know how they're going to be when they come in we don't know how they're going to act we've had some that weren't all that uh good when they're here but the groups that you saw this year in brick memorial high school and Brick Township High School were phenomenal I spent a week with them in the hotel in where we stay for the week and then we do traveling after the weekend's festivities uh to Atlantic City New York City and other local venues where they perform also at Senior Communities and so forth so it's not just an event uh that's there for two days three days and it's gone we try to be a part of the community with those groups but uh the two groups that came
147this year one was the flag waving group from the north um they were in the area fianza the northern regions of Italy and the other group was some uh there in Calabria and they were singing dancing group and you heard about the the flags they're worried about the ceilings in in the auditoriums because they can throw them a lot higher and we and they're used to doing them outside more than inside but uh it worked and we did it and then the dancing and so forth with the second group um was phenomenal and uh Dr Anderson uh she did she showed her stuff while while in Brick High School I saw two individuals dot out of there because they thought they were going to be captured to dance uh Dr Cajun and Dr fowl took
148off and they were like disappeared I had to use the restroom yeah yeah well you know you're lucky I didn't send them in there after you because they would have came but uh they're phenomenal group they destroyed being with people so what I have is here when we over uh brick High School Dr Cajun did get his gift but I'm gonna give a gift tonight to uh Mr barazi um Dr Farrell and Dr Anderson since you won the uh dancing award they put together a special package for you um so you get a special package here uh so what I'm gonna do is just I'll just come out I I have to add Mike we have to remember that during while we were there it was right before the game right Dr occasion and we
149had the cheerleaders and some of the marching band going through the hallways at rallying up the kids and the Italian group that was there absolutely loved this they started chasing them down to to see what they were doing and doing the cheers it was really a lot of energy all the people that came from Italy actually the the leader is a local police chief in Italy thank you who met with our police chief actually before they did the demonstration and they're pretty impressive they throw the flags and dance and catching it with their feet but they all never saw like a high school marching band and kind of pep rally and they they were taking pictures on their phone and uh and I don't know any Italian my mother yeah they did yeah they were
150in there and it was just a good feeling and I will tell you for our students who are in the audience really um what a cultural experience right you don't have to travel to New York or travel what a cultural experience to mingle and see some of that so I thought it was but where are my tickets to Italy let me tell you this wait anybody twice at a request of groups that came one of them was a Spanish turtle by the way the spandatory of the flag waves as they call them that's a competition in the lead at the guys participate in some of the groups they twirl five six flags at the same time and uh it was a little Limited in the in the gymnasium but outside like when we had them
151at the festival on the weekend some of them did twirl upwards of five six flats and it's just a competition they tried to teach me it when I was over there so let me just say if you ever go into Italy in these regions at least and I tell them we call them and tell them you're comment they treat you like a king I swear that king and queen because they're Italian Mr I was just gonna say because there's gonna be some food in here yeah but it wouldn't have been good by now I had it a week after that you know it was in my car for a week what does that this little uh and like it says the leases was put together uh afterwards because she she came up and danced with
152them uh we always plan to give to the schools and the prince dances in our standards you know that I had to go along thank you so much you're welcome and they they really loved uh your participation and I just love being there they love performing like I said we went over one night to the Four Seasons community in Sherlock uh mayor Ducey joined us over because we also have Assist the city with a with a town in in Italy and he came over to do some presentations with them and they performed you think the ceiling was low in in the auditoriums in this Four Seasons Community they had chandeliers hanging they're throwing the flags between the chandeliers I was waiting to see if one of the flags had a chandelier they didn't they didn't

154board of ed for selecting me from an incredible pool of applicants to fill the vacant seat on the brick Board of Education it fills me with hope and excitement that the future of the brick Board of Ed has so many interested and qualified applicants the theme of the interview evening that stood out to me the most was that each was a resident with no political agenda they just wanted to join an already successful Board of Education as I said in my own interview politics has no place in our schools a very good friend he called me and he said stay in your lane ask good questions and expect good answers I know I have a lot to offer this board and I look forward to attending committee meetings and playing a vital role in our
