good evening everyone and thank you for attending our board meetings we're going to get started uh there has been adequate notice of this meeting provided by the board of education june 23rd 2022 notice and the co-star setting for the date time and place for this meeting similar notice has been posted in the town hall the brielle school website and the borough clerk has in november pearl caucus mr becker dr d ambrosio mrs jones president dr lavelle mrs mcdevitt here mr melancelidge here mrs reed here mr vitale mr wolverine i'll second that mr becker yes dr kimbrough here mrs jones yes mrs mcdevitt yes mr melance yes mrs reed yes mr walter and do we have any presentations no presentations there's a big fairy matter you know visitors are permitted to discuss to comment on agenda
items only at this time and uh any correspondence yes we received a letter from mrs jane lohmann dear mrs jones and the board of education members i can't express the gratitude i feel for the recognition at our last board meeting i am so proud to be honor for my service to brielle school i have had the most wonderful teaching career and celebrating my time with brielle is the closure i could only dream of the clock gift is beautiful and will remain on my mantle please know that i appreciate all the opportunities i've had over the years teaching so many brielle students even though i worked so hard it never felt like work because all of because of my love of teaching all the best sincerely eugene loven thank you and we'll move on to committee
reports just for generations we did have a meeting this month it was just the other day on the 26th it was intended by myself mrs jones mrs reed in the full body of the administration chris and jen although i took extensive notes as you will see i did not have enough time to fully prepare an official report and i will do so before this week's up we spoke about a number of subjects including uh the blazer and esy all the way to social emotional goals reach programs including different uh curriculum infusions such as civics and what have you we also called at length to diversity and inclusion and to what extent equity still fits into that in relation to policy 24-22 again i'll have a full report that's public and everybody in the next few
days but for now that's it as you've heard um i would like to add kurt during our meeting we talked about um that the policy 2422 doesn't have the word equity and there was some question about that so i contacted on uh phil in the castro and peter salerno the attorney said uh strauss esme and i asked the question and so their response just okay so i'll just read to you their response they said the reason for the word equity not being included in policy guide 2422 is because we use the title of the statute section to identify each curriculum item listed and policy guide 24-22 the title to the statutes section njsa 1835 436 a is curriculum to contain instruction on diversity inclusion so to answer your question there was no change to the
statute or the policy guide in which the word equity was removed we hope this clears up any confusion as always feel free to reach out to us um so of course i needed a little recovery so i asked him i asked him you know i wanted to make sure that legally equity is to be included in the curriculum um so he said so he attached um he attached the controlling statue and so that and i could send that to all the board members um so you can see so in there he highlighted that it says here the instruction shall highlight and promote diversity including economic diversity equity inclusion tolerance and belonging in connection with gender and sexual orientation race and ethnicity disabilities and religious tolerance so um i understood it um and andy's here maybe
he could um speak on this the way i understood it is that even though it's not on the title it's still included in the curriculum any questions or comments on for her okay i do want to add that it's important to uh remember that it's not that we're teaching equity diversity inclusion per se it's more that it's infused into everyday curriculum whether it be math or science or civics or social studies so you know it's i think personally i think it's tough to teach someone how to be ethical either they are not or be inclusive if you are not infusing it into the curriculum those three topics is important is there in terms of uh the actual detailed curriculum we've been doing a lot of work this summer on well that piece will not be
made the general stuff will be made to the public that stuff is for the teachers and we're going to do like uh in september we plan on we talk about this the other day and we plan on doing an open house for parents to talk to them about the health curriculum because they're concerned so you can't see the entire curriculum you'll see the entire curriculum but the actual lesson plan that is not gonna that does not make the public that is okay any other questions and sean if anyone if you ever wanted to see the curriculum you can always talk with jen and she'll share the curriculum lately because um she and i have sat down and she shared you know the curriculum with them now lesson plans is different because each individual teacher creates
their own lesson plans and that's something that they use in the classroom too so that's a little different i mean i'm not thinking about a lesson plan per se but i think there's i was planning there's a difference on the section of our website that has many more detail in terms of what's being covered in a particular particular module or i don't know the exact wording and be published in the past like oh this is what they're going to be studying this week here's four concepts right so i don't know necessarily a lesson plan so much as here's the course outline like facilities taught at that particular time that's probably the pacing gun maybe you want to see the pacing guide and that i asked her for that at the meeting she's still working on
that so her and her and her team they're still working on the pacing guide and also the framework of what the teachers will be using okay and we know this whole process is going to take us at least two years because it's not something that's going to be ready in september this is a process a very pleased process so we don't have any other questions for her human resources joe we met [Music] tonight from 6 45 where we cover the items on the agenda if anybody has any questions any questions for john so uh we'll move on to policy sean sure thank you um yes apology committee did meet on monday at 5 pm um i thank really represented the administration president jones uh myself and uh dr davio representative ward um apologies for this
report being late we had to reschedule this number of times um i also do of course need to cancel the august 18th policy meeting uh now as we're meeting the board meeting is new to 17 so fall after it so we will meet again in september tonight the majority meeting we spent going over policy modifications that will be read first reading this evening um that came from strauss estimates alert two to eight fairly late policy updates here most of it was updated to modernize the phrasing of certain policies uh there was a couple notable ones so policy due to legislature changes strengthens requirements for ada and 508 requirements on our website um and typically our website we're using third parties that go through these 508 uh compliance audits before they're able to sell their platform
so for instance blackboard and atlas now board docs uh the platforms themselves tend to be 508 compliant but as we start to use them we will put our own content onto them and one of the ones i just want to point out that we need to be particularly aware of is that if we post a pdf that's just a scan and it's not ocr readable um we're supposed to have to include an html version because otherwise a screen reader wouldn't be able to read that content so as we publish documents to the to the website um we need to keep that in mind uh policy 5517 requires any student id cards that are provided for schools seventh grade and above contain the new jersey suicide prevention hope line or the nj hope line and also
the contact information for a crisis text line uh i was told the time we didn't currently have id cards but we will be having id cards for seventh graders um then there was a final policy in here which discusses uh student media and goes to great lengths to explain that uh students that are producing media from school whether it's written video media or social media have a right to freedom of speech however there are limitations and defines what those limitations are that the school has discretion over and it's the things that you would probably expect in terms of slander or liable provocation incitement those types of things that are prohibited but it does outline a if the school makes a determination that a student was making uh was doing something that was against those rules
that there's a appeals process that has to be formalized so that's it for those uh those eight policies that are going across um i also want to thank the board and the policy committee for approving the board docs platform we are in the process of scheduling required training um to be able to convert our policies to board docs and looking to try to get that set up for august that primarily will lead diane and myself for for the training but we'll also need it support as well for administration of the platform and the final piece is that all the board is welcome to that training if you want to attend it uh particularly the last hour which will cover how the platform works including how a policy approval will move from we get the update
from strauss esme we bring it to the to the policy committee meeting and we push it through the first and second reading so that's all i have thank you questions and i'm sure everyone's going to sign up for the training all right and so we're moving on to community relations uh the committee did not need this last month we'll resume as we re-enter the school here thank you so much okay um administrative report well it's been a very busy summer and i want to begin by thanking uh colin savior jen love murray president alexander lombo and lisa mata for uh working with us in the interview process tonight we're hiring a number of amazing people some of who are here tonight uh i want to point out um those who are here it's um catherine
terestina is right here we are so fortunate to have her join us reena is at the end everything's in the middle and also uh marina is also going to be our uh interventionist and kelly jack woods is going to be our fifth grade language artist as well as uh we're hiring ot tara healey some of you with her and colleen we're hiring as a teacher aide but we still have many more to hire we have interviewed well over 50 people for the eight positions that we have available so it's been our entire summer doing that the process is um is not easy but we always pride ourselves that brielle is always hiring the best teachers and uh the three people that are here with us tonight are every three of our clients and teachers are
not building so i want to welcome them and uh i i feel very fortunate that they'll be working with our children in uh this building uh and also i i am overwhelmed um i sent that a little letter last week and the amount of board members uh present and past teachers president pass especially children who have ridden their bikes here or see me here at wrecker extended school year academy um their their response to my retirement uh they i think many thought i was going to be here a lot longer but in the letter that i wrote my family right now wants to see me start a new chapter and i'm rather excited i'm bittersweet but i'm rather excited to be starting a new chapter come next year so it's been my pleasure serving here
for 15 years let me remind you because i said it's personnel that in 35 years there have only been three administrators here so that says a lot about this district and the board of education and the community that three people have led this community for 35 plus years and i hope that continues that in the next 35 that you only have three superintendents that would be my wish that that happens here because it was a great place and the children most importantly and teachers deserve that so thank you thank you you're welcome any comments or questions so we're the policy the number of hivs that were adjudicated not to be hits throughout the year i'm sorry i you didn't like this on monday so basically history policy 2512 requires us to report annually to the
board the number of hiv incidents that were educated not to be hivs and we picked july the july movie for that we'll get those even more so we're going to move on to action items um curricular programs kirk thank you dolly i would like to go for the motion action items day one through day seven on [Applause] yes and for district operations that's not your date i have a question about this what do they do with these computers many years past that nothing has released the disability and they take things apart to use it for other pieces and if you want to see what their office looks like they'll take you for a trip of course jessica's here i'm telling and then as far as this other the remote learning that is that that's just
the contingencies in case we had to do that again and they require that retirement so i like to put forth items b1 through v6 for approval yes mrs jones yes this is mcdevitt yes mr milan no this is me yes mr wolfe yes the board approves uh the following policies and regulations for a first reading see one second [Music] yes and next is human resources but before before you um make a motion joe i'd like to um just have a little something i wrote that's okay so today when i asked joe to make a motion to move human resources it comes with great sadness to me because of my d22 motion that the board of education approves the resignation of christine carlson superintendent for the purpose of retirement effective descending december 31 2022 mrs carlson
has dedicated 15 years to our community and more importantly our children her signature closing on all of her letters is keeping children first and for the last 15 years she has done that our brielle learning community has been fortunate and blessed beyond pleasure to have had someone like chris carlson with her years of experience commitment and unwavering determination to create an environment where our children feel safe thrive and excel i must also mention that she has beautified this building everyone who comes here is very impressed lastly for me personally chris has not just been a superintendent when i first joined the board 11 years ago we had a board member superintendent relationship that soon evolved into a mentor-mentee relationship as i also worked in education i recall when she encouraged me to seek an administrator's
position when i was a teacher and i did our relationship evolved and became a friendship and as with all friendships there are differences and disagreements but it was always handled with respect grace and love there is a scripture in the bible that says well done good and faithful servant chris you should feel proud because you have served our children and the brielle community well as you always close your letters with keeping children first the time has come my friend for you to keep your family first your leadership and friendship will be greatly missed i pray that you will enjoy many beautiful well-deserved years thank you [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so now joe if you could human resources yes yes it's the wall yes [Applause] is congratulations any discussion yes i want to um we had back
in the navy um brought up the policy change for 75-10 which was um the need to have uh security packets or workbooks for folks operating the building other than teachers such as mid monmouth or rec department and want to thank spaldino for following up from that meeting with an example go packet that her district used um so thank you so much for following up with that that policy did pass uh in the june meeting i just wanted to know have we developed anything for that purpose for the coming school year for uh midnight or other folks in the building correct et cetera [Music] it won't be the extensive packet that we go through with the staff it'll really just be the part of the packet that needs to be involved for those that are going
to appear post hours thank like you or just says yes [Music] notion that the board authorizes payment on the following june 30th 22 and july 22 bill's list and if the secretary is authorized to draw warrants that treasure in the total amount of six 844 sixty one thousand ninety one cents all the second time thank you mr beck mr banker yes dr dan brosher yes mrs jones yes yes and this evening there won't be an executive session and someone make a motion i'd like to make a motion yes [Applause] [Music] i
