Good evening, board president Ree, distinguished members of the board, Superintendent Davis, and members of the banning community. My name is Udit Morales, and I am proud to serve as Nichollet Middle School's ASB president. The past month has been full of

exciting events and school spirit. We kick things off with our first spirit days like career day and color war where students brought fun and competitive energy to campus. On April 16th, we hosted our fourth and last food day with a variety of options along with a dirty soda truck. On April 24th, we had our last school dance for all grades which was called Tropic like it's hot with the dirty soda truck being there as well. We also had our eighth grade dance night in Hollywood where everyone understood the assignment of dress code. There were suits, ties, dresses, and coats ready for the red carpet. On top of that, our top 50 eighth graders with the best grades got to go on a car racing field trip. In athletics, track is getting ready for their only

meet. Girls and boys soccer are doing great with cheer supporting them. Looking ahead, we are excited for our last pack track event, our aloha and team days and eighth grade year, end of the year activities along with eighth grade promotion. Lastly, I wanted to say a huge thank you to all of you for supporting us through everything we do and a huge thank you to Miss Downard for giving me a chance to make a difference on campus. Being part of ASB and seeing these events come together has been such an amazing experience and I'm really excited to see our school keep on growing. Thank you and have a great evening. Um, next up we're going to have um Lilian Andere from Banning High School to come and present grad night. Okay. And I also um

we also have Kum's alternative and I don't know if we have anyone from Kums because they also participated. They're on a field trip. Okay. Well, I think they would rather be at grad night or field trip. And that concludes our student presentations for the evening. Thank you. >> Good job, Etsy. Um, our student board member is also not present. >> Yeah, probably because of that. >> Timing, Mr. Paws, maybe if we think about that for next year. >> All right, moving on to 1.6, special recognition, board of trustees, Myra Angiano. We would like to take this opportunity to recognize our outgoing board of trustee member, Myra Angiano. Um, Melanie, you make me cry. Do you want to say words? Go ahead. >> Okay, everyone's just a little reluctant right now, but let let me see

if I can get them amped up. So, I'll start by this saying this, Miss Aiano. When I came to this district in 200, it was 2000. It was a tough time. I will say that there was a lot of things going on. We were in the pandemic. Um, and I'm going to say it publicly because it's public information. We were coming out of close session 9 10 11:00. Board meetings were going to 2 3:00 in the morning. You guys remember that? That was almost every that was almost all of the meetings. Look at where we are now. And that's part of you being on the board. a part of your influence and part of your leadership. You've definitely rec represented our students from a parent perspective from someone who's gone to school here and your

love for students. But I will say this about you. Couple things. One is when I saw you in the classrooms, when we were doing learning walks, when we were doing walks, I saw right away your love for students. I saw how you approached them, how you connected with them onetoone. and that warmed my heart and I remember telling you about that. The only one thing that I regret is that I always asked you to call me Terrence and that has never happened. It's been Mr. Davis, but I just want to thank you for the growth, the relationship over time and thank you for everything that you've done. Thank you so much and your commitment cuz people do not know what the commitment is and the weight of the work. It's not easy. It's heavy and

it's hard, but you navigated through that. So, congratulations to you. Sorry, maybe not. I want to say thank you for your time serving on the board. Um we've become friends while you've been here and um your your dedication is unprecedented and it will never be matched and I I have been extremely grateful to serve alongside you. We started December 2019 and I'm very sorry to see you go, but I'm very happy for you. Thank you. Sorry. Sorry. Um I appreciate your time and dedication and I'm going to miss you, but we'll still hang out outside of here. I'm just going to miss you in this space. Thank you. Mr. Aniano, um I started when you um talked to me about um going on to the board and your passion was one of the things and

your desire to work together as a team. Your desire for these children really touched my heart. As a former as a former teacher who was very interested in making sure that the board did what they always said they were going to do, I was very inspired by your passion for that. Extremely in inspired and by your kindness and and what you wanted to do. I I remember speaking to you and to Miss Tropman and that is what prompted me. I thought yes, this board is going in a different direction. this board is going to work together and we're going to get great things done and over the last almost four years we have done great things and through that your organizational skills and your insights into things I mean you would bring up things that

other people you know maybe thought about but didn't bring up and I really admired that admire that about you and the fact that you were your family and you you know working so hard in school and still had time to notice you know the ingress egress of of central and all of the little things and the big things um your insights so many things and speaking up I mean you were my first president and um always you know making sure that you know we did things by the book and I it's really been an honor to work with you you know we've we've agreed and disagreed and Um, but I as a new teacher, I just wish you so well. I It's so exciting to go into your first classroom and as much as I

would love to see you still here with all of the insight that you have, um, it's going to be so exciting for you, for your family, and I just wish you all the best and thank you. >> Thank you. >> Mine will be short because otherwise I'll end up crying like Laura. We had a very rocky start, but it has been a very big pleasure to work on the board with you. Like everybody said, your dedication, it's unmatched. The things that you've done, how far we've come, and your time, because it does take a lot of time. It does weigh all the decisions that we make. I wish you the best. I truly honestly wish you the best. Thank you for everything you've done for our district and for our students and for our staff.

>> Thank you. >> Only cuz it's you. >> Okay. I've already told you you've made a huge positive impact on this district and that's not going to stop being in the classroom. You're going to continue to have an amazing impact on our students and in the direction that this district goes. I'm very excited for you. I'm glad that I got to know you and I look forward to the future. >> Thank you. >> Yeah. You want me to read it? Oh, okay. All right. So, good evening. Thank you for tonight's recognition. Uh serving as a board member has been a rewarding experience and I'm truly grateful for the trust and support from from my constituents and our community. I want to especially thank my family for supporting me throughout this journey. Being a board member

is not an easy task and there have been many sacrifices along the way, especially involving my children. from missing bedtime routines when meetings ran late to needing help getting my kids to and from sports because of board commitments. And I am so grateful to have an amazing family. Thank you as well to my fellow board members, Mr. Davis, also known as Terrence and cabinet. It has been a privilege to work alongside all of you and to learn from each of you. I am also thankful for the opportunities this role has given me to learn more about the field of education to grow both personally and professionally and to connect and network with so many amazing people. But most of all, I am grateful for the friendships that were built during this time. I'm excited to

hang out and not have to wonder, do we have a quorum or can we do this? So, I'm really looking forward to that. and I am looking forward to my next chapter. And I will carry these experiences, lessons, and friendships with me. And how fitting that on California Day of the Teacher, I can proudly say that I have officially joined the teachers club. I'm gonna say it wrong. Mary Um before I begin, I want to say I'm extremely sorry for missing the meeting today. Um grad night was an extremely fun event, but also extremely long. Um and I would like to thank everyone who played a role in um allowing the seniors to have this magical night. Good evening, board president Ruiz, distinguished members of the board, superintendent Davis, and members of the Banning community. My name is Mary Adberto and I am a proud member of the associate student body and so much more here at Banning High School. I am truly grateful for the opportunity

to stand before you today and to represent not only my senior class, but the student body as a whole. First, I would like to begin by saying it has truly been an honor serving as your student board representative. Over this past year, we have made so much progress together and I'm extremely incredible grateful to have been part of it all. One of my goals as student board representative was to advocate for students. Whether it be students who believe that they could not be heard or were as simply afraid to speak up. I knew that I wanted to create a platform where students could feel comfortable sharing their experiences. When I look back on my presentations, what makes me feel most proud is not simply that I spoke at this podium, but it was the issues

that I stood for. I am proud that I use my voice to bring attention to issues affecting students ranging from mental health of high achieving students to improvement to the ELD program and to recognition for legacy leaders. Those conversations matter to me and I hope they made others feel seen as well. Thank you for the opportunity to allow me to stand before you all and represent my fellow peers as it is truly an experience I will carry on with me. And to end it all off, um, regarding where I will be attending this fall, I will be attending Princeton University on a fullright scholarship. >> Married up. Mary, Mary, Mary, if you can come back. Mary, Mary, if you can come back. Yes. I want to start with saying congratulations. That is amazing. Thank you.

>> Um I think you definitely can consider yourself an advocate. You have done an amazing job speaking up for students who probably would not have had a voice. Um it has been a pleasure getting to know you and I cannot wait to hear about all the amazing things you do. Congratulations. >> Also, congratulations. We're extremely proud of you and and we know you'll go far and I too am very excited to see where you go and and I'm if you would love to give us updates, we'd love to to hear them that we're we're look forward we're looking forward to everything you're about to do and will do. So, congratulations, >> Mary. Congratulations. Honestly, I am so excited to see if your enthusiasm, your your growth this year, I mean, growth is never without its

challenges and I mean, everything that you've done this year, you know, from well, from all of your academics to everything else you've done, The Lion King, I mean, all of the stuff, Princeton is going to be so happy to get you. I'm very excited. I hope you have a wonderful summer and we cannot wait to hear what's going on in your life. You >> congratulations. It has been an honor getting to know you and sitting next to you this whole academic school year. It is amazing how humble and such a great listener that you are and you have the ability to go so far. I am so excited for you um getting into Princeton. Amazing job, girly. I can't wait, like everyone else, to hear everything that you get done at Princeton. Don't forget, always

represent your little town and your alma mater. And again, congratulations. Stay true to yourself. You are an amazing person. Thank you. >> And I'll say this, Mary. It started with almost a year ago, you were at Harvard for the summer program. You told me about that when I met you, and I was just blown away. And from the time that I've met you, you've been upfront. You've been graceful. We've had conversations in the office about a lot of things. And I'm just really, really proud of you. And I want you to remember this. We can talk about all the prestige in schools, all those big names, but it's you. It's what you're going to do. It's who you are. And you're going to represent Banning very well. Extremely proud of you. You not only brought

issues up to the board, but you also followed up. You came back with status updates. It's going well, it's not going well. That means you see things through, and that's who you are at your core, and we are really proud of you. So, congratulations. Yeah. >> Thank you, >> Mary. All right. Item 3.1, report from close session. Clerk Troutman, please share. Item 2.1, in close session, the board received information and took action. The reportable action is as follows. Good evening, board president Ree, Clerk Troutman, distinguished members of the board, Superintendent Davis, and members of the Bannon community. I'm here once more to express my gratitude to Mr. pause and the board for valuing and acting upon the students voices.

Your work is generally inspiring. I wasn't planning on speaking today, but I feel like our great Benny High School deserves one last praise for me this school year. I have a small report from the bathrooms that have improved so much, made many of the students now feel comfortable and in an environment they can thrive in. In April, our upper classmen enjoy a truly unforg unforgettable prom night. We also hosted our last food fest where many students got to enjoy food from local businesses. Additionally, the theater department's final play of the year gave the students the unique opportunity to become directors and direct their own show. Looking ahead, we're eager and anticipated for our annual Aloha pep rally this week. For many seniors is a bittersweet farewell moment, while for juniors, it marks the exciting beginning

of their senior year. The pepper rally will be filled with excitement featuring spirit competitions for the spirit flag along with student performances and games organized by our very own ASB. We extend a warm invitation to you all to join us for this wonderful event. Thank you once again for your dedication to the banning community. Your efforts have made a significant impact to our students. Have a great rest of your day. >> Thank you. You too. >> Oh, you're quiet. >> Item 3.4 BTA comments. I would like to welcome BTA President Anthony Garcia. >> Good evening everyone. Um it is a bittersweet moment tonight. Uh we are losing one of our great board members. Um but I'm excited to uh welcome back one of our former graduates back into the classroom as a teacher again. Um

that's always great. So um excited to see her on the next part of phase of her journey in life and uh I know she will do well. So um I also want to thank her. I know it's not it's she's been on the board a member for a long time. um spent a lot of years and I know those first few years were rough. Um she went through a lot um but I wanted her to know that she did well. She came through it on the end and she made a lot of positive changes in banning. So congratulations. And I also want to say congratulations to Mary. Um that is a quite an accomplishment and we are all very proud of you. And then uh lastly I want to offer condolences to uh the Wells

family. Um Doug Wells was another teacher in Banning, one of my former teachers. He was my seventh grade science teacher. And um I know he was one of those science teachers that made everybody um love he loves science and he made everybody else love science. So um we won't miss him. Thank you. >> Item 3.4 CSA comments. I would like to welcome CSSE President Jennifer Serrano good evening. Um I'm excited to be back here once again. I'm Jennifer Serrano. I am the newly elect reelected president for the 2627 um calendar year here in Banning. Um, I do represent the classified staff. Um, if you don't know who those are, those are our transportation, our maintenance, our special services, para educators, food service, just the every non-eing um, family that we have here. I'm going to

try not to be long-winded, but I do have special permission, so bear with me. Um, I'd like to start off by saying a big thank you to Miss Myra Anguano for always being a friend to the classified staff of chapter 147. We could always count on her to listen and advocate for us. We are excited to be able to work alongside of her elbowto elbow to support our students. Thank you, Myra, for always being there. Um, this year we do have a full successor contract negotiation process ahead of us with our first meeting with the district scheduled for May 29th. During negotiations, we will be focusing on health and welfare salaries, additional contract language aimed to strengthen um protections and securities for our members. As we wind down the school year, I just want to

say thank you to our classified members of chapter 147 for everything you do. Um, you all rock when it comes to serving the students of Banning Unified and your hard work does not go unnoticed. Um, so with that, I kind of wanted to present the board with our flyer for the classified school employees week, which is coming up. It is May 17th to the 23rd. I will leave that um with you. But I just want to go back and give a little history on um CSEA which stands for the classified school employees association as we are celebrating our 100th year this uh in 2026. So CSA began in 1927 when a group of Oakland school c uh custodians set out to secure retirement benefits. A group of nine women, um, excuse me, nine men and

one woman assembled for CSA's first conference. During the 3-day meeting, they established a framework for the union and set an agenda of progress that continue to elevate the status of classified employees for the next 100 years. From the capital to the bargaining table, CSEA has pursued the interests of classified employees up and down the state, transforming non-certificated support staff into classified professionals and respected partners in the education community. During the 20s, 1920s, um, in 1928, just a year after CSEA was formed, the union helped push through SB 50 uh, 551, which allowed school districts to maintain establish retirement benefits for all school employees, not just teachers. More importantly, it became the first law in the books recognizing school employees other than teachers and administrators. In the 1930s for classified employees um the great depression era

meant more hours and less pay. By the end of the decade classified employees won the right to paid leaves of absence for illnesses. During the 1940s the years following the World War II CSA established itself as an important part of the education community. In just 10 years membership shot up from 1400 members to nearly 10,000 having found strength in numbers. CSEA demanded the basic rights and benefits which had been enjoyed by teachers for years um and should finally be extended to classified employees during the 1950s. In 58 and 59, CSEA helped establish the classified bill of rights. These new laws included the 40-hour work week, sick leave, vacation and bereavement leave, and laws prohibiting age discrimination. Classified employees who had long considered themselves partners in education were finally getting some of the recognition they deserved.

In the 1960s, CSEA continued to gain legal rights. These laws gave classified employees paid holidays, overtime pay, paid on the job leave, injury leave, and the right to join a union. During the 1970s, despite gains made at the state level, treatment of classified workers varied greatly from one district to the next. In 1975, collective bargaining gave the union power to negotiate at the bargaining table and to represent employees under the full strength of new labor laws. During the 1980s, after the pro uh Proposition 13 passed in 1978, many school programs such as transportation, music, art, and athletics began to disappear. Classified employees who worked in these programs lost their jobs and were shuffled around. In 1988, CSA and the education community supported Prop 98, which guaranteed a minimum level of state funding for public schools.

During the 1990s, that sounds funny. Classified workers uh worked successfully to stop politicians from an attempt to raid employees pensions to pay for other programs. CSEA also helped stop a harmful voucher uh campaign that would have undermined the state's public school system. During the 2000s, CSEA joined forces with millions of other American workers in the AFLCIO and the California Labor Federation. CSEA also joined coalitions uh working to achieve adequate school funding, affordable health care, and retirement security. During the 2010s, um, CSEA worked to recover from the state's sputtering economy and prolonged budget crisis. In 2012, CSEA helped pass Proposition 30 and Proposition 55 to restore school funding and protect crucial services for California students. During the 2020s, during the pandemic, CO 19, CSA helped create historic layoff protections for classified employees during a time of

great uncertainty. CSA also helped establish new job opportunities for par educators and other school staff as well to ensure safety protocols to safeguard the health of both school staff and students. Here we are 100 years strong. In 2026, CSEA will hold its 100th conference representing more than 250,000 workers. CSEA is the largest classified employee union in the nation. Its 10 decades of success in legislation, contract negotiations, retire benefits and safety measures, and protection of employee rights is a testament to the hard work of all CSA members. CSEA has nearly 800 chapters throughout the state of California. We are chapter 147. We were chartered in October 31st of 1982, which means we have 44 years of service here to the Banning community students. And yeah, that's who we are. Um, so please join us in celebrating

us May 17th to the 23rd. Go classified. Thank you. >> Item 4.1, superintendent's comments. >> Good evening, President Reae, members of the board. our abandoning community. Uh we are in the season of recognition. Happens about this time every year and there's a lot going on. Uh several of us have been to events where we've had administrators recognized, teachers recognized, classified employees, all kinds of folks. And so I want to start by saying this. Um students Princeton, we had a student a couple board meetings ago. Was it Ruggers? What was the Do you remember? I can't remember Brown. It was a very prestigious university. That's coming out of Banning. I can't even list all of the colleges that our kids are going to. Had an opportunity to go to an AVID awards night a couple weeks

ago. I think there was about almost 30 students. All of them are going to college. All of them. There was one student who applied to almost 30 colleges. They got into all of them. All of them. that's happening here. That's happening in Bang. And so the work that we're doing, the work that the students are doing, the families is showing up and it's here. The work our staff are doing and we're really proud of that. Next, I want to talk about uh today being uh the recognition for teacher of the year, not teacher of the year, California day of the teacher. I know there's help around us all the time. We have to use our help in CSEA next week. And I just want to say that we see you. We see the work that's

done. And no one should be talking about anything until you see the work that people do on a day-to-day basis to support our students in our community. And we're proud of the work that everyone does and how we show up. It's how we show up and it's what we do regardless of what people say. It's what we do. So I want to thank you for the work that you do because I see it. Because I'm with you. finally uh as we enter this season are seniors. So I don't even know what that's all about getting home at 4 in the morning. I would have fell out. But apparently you guys still have all that energy. But in the next couple of weeks you have about what 3 weeks we have uh New Horizons. We have

independent study. We have Benning High School. So in a couple weeks that's going to be it. But it's really the start of a new journey. So we're really looking forward to the excitement and the fun that you're going to have. But just know we're always here to support you when needed. So, thank you. Thank you all for the support that we do for our students. Thank you. >> Item five, consent calendar. >> The recommendation is to approve consent calendar agenda items 5.2 through 5.4 as provided. All matters listed under the consent calendar are considered routine and will be enacted by one motion.
