I am honored to share our Kum's district message and some of our recent highlights. We're happy to report that 22 students earned awards for being on honor roll for the third quarter. New Horizon is proud to say we had nine gold, two silver, 11 bronze honoral award winners this past quarter. That is Horizon Pride. And grad and congratulations are in order for our top graduates, New Horizon senior Jasmine Verdusco and BIS senior Paloma Martinez, who we honored at the RCOE student academic award dinner on April 21st, as well as myself receiving the exceptional graduate award. Go Stallions. We had a massive turnout at this year's spring openhouse barbecue. Lots of

food that Mr. Sanchez, one of our teachers, um, barbecued hamburgers, which are really good. Lots of fun such as face paintings and other activities. It was great to hear Miss Riddle and Mr. Whitikin's music students under the directions of Mr. Jason Nutter as they took the Kums stage. This was a great preview for their upcoming concert at the Fire Rock in Ukipa on April 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Stop on by for good food and good music. Kums ended their softball season tied for first place. This year, thanks to coaches Aa Taylor and Sanchez, Kum's athletes focused on resilience, preparation, and teamwork. Today, Kum students traveled to the Angel Stadium to participate in STEM activities and watch Major League Baseball at its best. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim took on the Toronto

Blue Jays and the outcome was that the Los Angeles Angels won 7-2. Special thanks to the theater director, Mr. Joshua Prrisk, technical director, Miss Tamara Griffy, and the Broadway Broncos for inviting Kums to see their awesome one-of-a-kind musical production of The Lion King. Junior sets, costumes, lighting, and performances were amazing. Can't wait. Can't wait to see what they do next year. Mr. Pacco's art students are packing up their favorite paintings, sculptures, and art pieces, which will be displayed at this year's California Continuation Education Association spring conference in beautiful downtown Burbank. Thank you for allowing me to share Kum's alternative report with you. >> Dr. Cosy Bush, just hold one second. Madam President, excuse the interruption, but Jasmine mentioned this, but I don't think she did it justice, but last night uh at Riverside Convention Center,

there are 18 school districts in Riverside County who have high school programs. 18 out of the 20some districts. and Jasmine received a special award being acknowledged as one of 18 students in Riverside County for exceptional achievement. And with that, she did receive a $1,000 scholarship. So, congratulations again, Jasmine. >> So, very proud of our students. And last but not least, representing Banning High School, Liliana Andres. Good evening, board president Ruiz, distinguished members of the board, Superintendent Davis, and members of the Banning community. My name is Liliana Andere, and I am the ASB president at Benning High School. I am here today to share a few updates from our student body. First, I would like to recognize our recent Lion King show. It was an amazing production that truly bought brought students together and showcased the

talent, dedication, and school spirit within our campus. Prom was also recently took place on April 18th and it was a fun and memorable experience for students. It was a night that many students had been looking forward to and it gave us the opportunity to come together and celebrate and create lasting memories with our classmates. Events like these events like prom are very meaningful because they help build a sense of community and allow students to enjoy important milestones in their high school experience. Lastly, looking ahead, we have our upcoming Aloha pep rally on April 30th. This is the senior's last pep rally of the year and one of the most exciting events on campus. It is especially meaningful as the juniors cross over into the section continuing a special tradition and we would love to invite

you all to attend and experience the energy and the school spirit. Thank you for your time and continued support of our students. >> Thank you. And that concludes our student presentations for the >> Thank you. Item 1.5 student board member comments. Mary Adfeto. Good evening, board president Ruiz, distinguished members of the board, Superintendent Davis, and of course, members of the Bannon community. My name is Mary Adberto and I am a proud member of the associate student body and so much more here at Banning High School. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to stand before you today and to represent not only my senior class but the student body as a whole. Today I would like to highlight several improvements that our school has made over this past school year. At the beginning of the

school year, I spoke about the lack of electives in our curriculum and how this negatively impacted the student body. While I understood that hiring new teachers to expand electives can be challenging, I am extremely pleased that a compromise was reached to meet students needs. Programs such as the Think Together program have been have made a positive impact. Many students have described the program as fun and interesting, noting opportunities to learn how to cook, learn how to drive, and to explore new skills. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to making this initiative possible. Especially Miss Novelis who shared during a board meeting that she was actively working on creating an after-school program for students. In addition, I would like to acknowledge improvements to the school's bathrooms. During the last schoolboard meeting, several students raised

concerns about the sanitization, sanitation, and supervision. Since then, I have noticed meaningful changes, including increased staff presence and reduced crowding in the girls bathroom. I also recently met with Mr. Downer and saw concrete steps being taken to address these concerns. These efforts include link crew students creating videos to promote cleanliness as well as strategies aimed at making restrooms a more comfortable space for everyone. These advance these advancements reflect a school that values student voices is in and is committed to a continuous improvement. This is something many students including myself find both validating and reassuring. Thank you. Item 1.6, opportunity for community comments. Did we receive any community comments? >> No comments were received. >> Item two, close session. The board will now go into close session. The time is 5:49. >> We are back from

close session. The time is 7:37. Clerk Troutman, please take role. >> Trusty Angiano, >> present. >> Trusty Martinez, Laura, >> present. >> Trusty Nollis, >> present. >> President Ruiz, >> present. >> And I, Clerk Troutman, and present. Please let the record reflect we have a quorum. >> Item 3.1, report from close session. Clerk Troutman, please share. >> Item 2.1. In close session, the board received information and took action. The reportable action is as follows. Regarding case number 2025-26-9, the board chose to expel student to non-public school for one current and upcoming semester. Item 2.2 in close session, the board received information and was updated. Item 2.3, in closed session, the board received information and was updated. Item two, I'm sorry, item 3.2, two opportunity for community comments. Have we received any others than the one?

>> Just the one that we have. >> Okay. >> Individuals who wish to address the board on matters which affect the district and its programs are requested to complete a request to address board of trustees card and submit it to the administrative assistant. Speakers are asked to limit comments to 3 minutes. While the board welcomes input from the community, they will not respond or take action during public comments. The board may decide to refer matters to the district staff or take under adisement for a future meeting. All speakers are reminded to be respectful and courteous. At this time, I would like to invite Jose Sanchez. Good evening, board president Ree, Clark Troutman, distinguished members of the board, Superintendent Davis, and member in the Benning community. My name is Su Sanchez, and I am a student

at Banning High. I extend my sincere gratitude to each of you for attending the Lion King musical. It was a truly memorable evening. I also wish to express my appreciation to Mr. Pause and the administrative team for their support to student concerns about the their efforts in improving the restrooms. These improvements have significantly contributed to a safer and more comfortable environment for our student body. Throughout the year, I have observed areas within our school that are required additional support. Especially, I have noted that many of our students and dedicated teachers could benefit from increasing administrative assistance. It is crucial that we provide our students and educators with the resource and support they need to excel. As for educators, their success directly impacts the quality of education us the students receive. To further enhance our school

environment, I propose a collaborative effort between teachers, students, and administrators to identify specific areas where support is most needed. By fostering open communication and actively listening to concerns of educators, we can deeply target strategies to address their needs especially. Investing in our teachers is an investment in our students and working by together we can create a more supportive and thriving educational community for all. I would like to thank you all for your time and have a great rest of your evening. >> Thank you. >> Item 3.3 BTA comments. I would like to welcome BTA President Anthony Garcia. Good evening everyone. Um not much to report just uh we had our first negotiation session last uh month. Uh things went very well. I want to uh thank the district for being prepared and uh working with

us and uh really making the time worthwhile. It's was a big change that we what we had experienced before um with how much we were able to get done the first day and hoping that one or two more days and we we will be done. Thank you. >> Item 3.4 CSA comments. I would like to welcome CSEA President Oh, this is wrong. Jennifer Jennifer Serrano. Is that it? No. Okay. All right. Item 4.1, superintendent's comments. Good evening, president, board president, members of the board, our community. So, I'm going to try to be brief. I'm going to start with a TKDI student Ameliano. I love it when our prek TK preschool students speak. But I want to point something out very specific. When he started talking, I felt the energy and emotion in the room. Everyone

in this room, eartoear smiles. It was something that was just magnetic. And I think Miss Burgess, you're going to present tonight, so I don't want to steal anything, but just what what a great opportunity for us to see our learners, our youngest learners, and what they do. You're setting the tone, and I know the data that you're going to present tonight is going to show what's happening in our district that hasn't been happening. So, I just want to thank you for bringing our students and Ameiliano, keep rocking on. Uh, next, I just want to say about Mary. Uh the play was mentioned uh the Lion King. So I had an opportunity to see that early sneak peek of it and our board member Maria Defe she she played Rafiki and she was all over that.

She just like lived it. All of the students just embodied and some of the artwork I don't know if you saw that outside. uh Miss Scullan, Miss Scallion, Scullan, Scullan, uh a newer art teacher in the team. They just do a really good job with our students and it's just very impressive uh what is happening in our district. But I want to specifically talk about two things tonight, but Mary did talk about at the end of her speech tonight, continuous improvement. Continuous improvement. Our administrators have are being indoctrinated right now in improvement science and the scientific method because we can't get better until we improve what we do daytoday. And that's where we're on the line to do. And I I just I see good things in terms of where we're going. We've done great,

but there's so much more that we can improve by improving our systems. That's not people are bad. That's how we fix these systems. That way our people and our staff flourish, which impacts our students. So, just two things. First, I want to um talk a little bit about a learning walk that we did that was something different. Uh we had Anthony uh from BTA, we had Jennifer from CSEA, we had uh some representatives from our SOPA, which is the special education local um plan. I should know what it is area. And so, we had two people come with us to look at all of our special education classes. not all of them, the majority of them to provide us input, to provide feedback to say, what can we do better to support teachers and that

was the first time we had done that. And you're going to hear from Mr. Worthington tonight on his presentation about special education. But one of the things I want to frame in that is nothing is ever perfect, but if we don't start changing what we do, we don't get to where we need to go. So, I just ask for people's patience, but we're on the right track to peer in and look at what's happening to find out how we do a better job. Uh, and a part of this, some people may be saying, maybe not in this room, but outlooking, you're always talking about positive things. That's my job. My job is to focus on the positive of what we're doing. If I focus on negativity, where are we going? Negative. If we're focusing on

positive, that's where we're going. So, that's why I do that, just to share that. And finally, I want to talk about something that I'm really proud of. So, as a superintendent, you have the opportunity to be involved in a lot of these community forums and groups. And so, there's this group that meets in Banning. Uh we have the city of Banning. We have uh several other organizations including hospitals. And one of our students, and you'll see him on graduation night, probably before then. He was there last night. uh one of our students last night, one of our scholar students, he came to me, he was actually on one of our podcasts that's going to come out and he was with Angel and I and he said, "Hey, you know, I'm taking this class at Mount

Sinto. It's for radiology and I have this assignment and I didn't get it done and it's due at the end of the week. Do you know if you can help me out because I need to interview a radiologist?" So, I said, "Let me let me look into that." What did I do? I contacted two people who were on the panel. One of them is an administrator at Sanregonio Hospital. He oversees a lot of people. He started working to see if we can find a radiologist. Another one is a doctor who works for the University of Riverside Health System. Both of them quickly tried to find someone. And so I connected them with a student. The next thing you know, I talked to the student. He says, "You know what? I had an opportunity to interview

a radiologist. He wants to be a radiologist and he's going to be a radiologist. And not only did I have an interview, I got invited to the hospital. They showed me around the hospital and I had an indepth conversation with a radiologist about the work. That's what community engagement is. That's our goal number three. That is community engagement. I want people to know that's what we're doing for our students because people want to help. They want to help. They don't know how to do that. So, we have to open up the door and find out how we get them in to help our students. And I'm very proud of that. But that's our students saying, "Hey, I need help." And us figuring out how to connect the dots. Uh so, I just wanted to share

that with our community because that's what we are all doing. So, thank you. Item five, consent calendar. >> The recommendation is to approve consent calendar agenda items 5.2 through 5.5 as provided. All matters listed under the consent calendar agenda are considered routine and will be enacted by one motion. There will be no separate discussion of these items prior to the time the board votes on the motion unless members of the board of trustees or staff request that specific items be removed for separate discussion and action. Do we have a motion and a second to approve the consent calendar agenda as provided? >> I move. >> I'll second. >> I have a motion from Clerk Troutman and a second from Trusty Nollis. All those in favor say I. >> I. >> All those opposed say nay.

>> Motion passes 5-0. Item 6.1, Florida Street Discovery Center School Presentation. I would like to invite Mrs. Colette Burgess to share tonight's presentation. >> Thank you, Steve. You want to >> Okay. Good evening, board president Ruiz, members of the board, Superintendent Davis, my wonderful colleagues, and community members. My name is Colette Burgess, and I am honored to serve as a proud principal at Florida Street Discovery Center. Thank you so much for the opportunity to share how our school is working to reflect the district's vision for student success. So it is our part to continue to follow the mission of Banning Unified School District. We also are working on continuing to follow the vision to prepare, inspire, and educate our little ones. The goals are to um accelerate student and academic achievement, cultivate a safe and

healthy learning environment, and increase parent and community engagement. And as you can see, look at the wonderful smiles on our students already. We had a celebration last week. Um, this was the first time that I was able to attend with my um DI students and it was wonderful. So, at FSDC, our goal is to help our Shhatland ponies learn, explore, and grow every day. Our students learn through playing with sand or you know measuring and they're learning through math. They're also learning through uh language and it is so wonderful to walk into the classrooms and see the little ones saying Miss Burgess look at look at what I'm doing and just looking at the smiles and just watching how the students are great gaining their knowledge which is a part of their growth. We have

several programs at FSDC and we have grown tremendously. We have a uh transitional kinder garden class. We have a TK dual immersion program. We also have a TK special day class. We have preschool special education. Uh we had that program. We also have a state preschool. We have a an intervention teacher who is on campus to help our little ones who fall behind. We also have a speech and assessment team. And we have before and after school um which it's called RAZ. And in some of these pictures, these beautiful smiles, the little ones went on a field trip. And I just love um to see how the students just enjoy coming to school. So for the to accelerate our student uh academic achievement, our focus is for our little ones to learn through rigorous play.

And I know sometimes people may question, wait a minute, how are our students learning through play? But we still have standards set for the students. So, um I went into a classroom last week and our um it was during the math time and our little ones were playing with blocks with Legos and they had different colors. But I looked and I said, "Oh my dear, you guys are classifying." They had all of the yellow yellow um blocks together. They had all of the blue blocks, all of the red blocks, and they were so excited to say, "Miss Burgess, look at what we did. Look at what we did." And they also were counting the blocks. So through play, they are definitely learning. We have several um programs that we have um been trying to follow.

We have the creative curriculum and it is a playbased curriculum. We also have the uh education software for guiding instruction which is ESGI and this is to track and assess our students to see their progress throughout the year. So I will show you a graph in a few minutes. We have also Estraita. I hope I pronounced it correct. Um and it is an early Spanish literacy and that is for the dual immersion uh program learning without tears. And the thing that we have been really the teachers really love is the training that uh they've gotten through the Irvine uh math practices. We also during the summer we're going to go for the a first time to avid um training. So we're excited about that. And footsteps to brilliance is a digital form um to connect

it connects the parents to working with their students at home with learning how to read. So, ESGI, I mentioned just a few minutes ago, is has been such a great um program to use to track our students. And the golden ticket, yes, I'm going to say the golden ticket has been being able to sit down and have data chats. So, I've had um data chat with uh including Mr. Davis, Dr. Kazzy Bush also um Marcia and the my first meeting I can I cannot tell you how excited I was that we were able to have a form to where I can see where our students are um being successful. So I will show you on the next slide and let me get my numbers out. So this is um the bar graph for the English

instruction classrooms and the blue bar graph represents the beginning of school. So that is the students came in with uh whatever they learned at home. The red bar reflects the first trimester and the yellow bar reflects the second trimester. Now our focus is in math they started off I'm going to just give you the numbers for the first one. uh they started off at 27% and first trimester they moved up to 46% and the second trimester they move the students moved up to 62%. The good thing about um this also is our students who are struggling, we have the intervention teacher who will group them together, take them um into her room and work on some of the um the things that they are struggling with. So I just have to say thank you for

letting us have an intervention teacher. it is really making a a huge difference as you can see throughout this whole graph in ELA we see a a high improvement um also with the students learning how to write their their name it you'll see an improvement there for the dual emergent uh the the cl the math right here the first red bar trimester looks a little low but the it's good to see that they are growing. So the second bar shows that we've had improvements with the language. It it was even on the first go around for uh BOI for the beginning of the uh school year but in the second trimester trimester we do see an improvement and as for writing their names you can see how high it is there. So that is that

warms my heart with being able to to do the data to have data to be able to track our our little ones to make sure that they don't fall behind. All I wanted to tell you uh talk to you also about my uh the special day of class and preschool and state preschool purchase. They also >> I'm sorry. Can you go back to the data slide just really quickly? Go go go go go back. You said >> just one slide. So is there a third trimester test? >> There is a third trimester. Yes. Which but we don't have the data yet because we're not there yet. The teachers will start doing working on their the report cards probably next week. >> Okay. Thank you. So um we can have our our data chat later on

and I can show you and I can show you the improvement that the uh students have had. >> And the other thing I just want to note that you didn't is we can talk about all kinds of stuff but when we're looking at data we're looking at real results and this is where our pride comes from. What the results and outcomes are of the work that's being done. So I'm sorry to interrupt. And that's what we're we are uh looking for. And like I said, I'm excited because we're we're on a whole different level now from where we started period at Florida Street. Okay. Where was I? So, the preschool and state preschool and special day class, they use the DRDP, which um it's I think I've had conversations with some of our board members

in the in the past. Um it's a lot of work. It it getting through the uh DRDP. I'm also they use teach town and they continue to do the hands-on learning with our students the professional development and the networks. The teachers have been trained with the uh teaching strategies, learning without tears training, footsteps to brilliance, the Irvine math practices, and the Irvine math practice training. Let me explain what what I was amazed with the um Irvine math practices and the training. The teachers did their training with the instructor, but on top of doing that, they ended uh the team came to Florida Street. They did a little training in the morning time and then the instructor picked up the team and they went into the classroom to do the lessons with the students. So the

teachers had the firhand training watching the instructor show them how uh show the teachers how to teach the math lesson and we had the students engaged in the lesson to see the um how the students were excited about doing the lesson and the teachers sat at the beginning and just kind of watched and then the instructor said okay teachers let's let's join in together and let's work through this lesson. I am really was really impressed with seeing that. And then I mentioned AVID which we'll uh do in the summertime. Another part of the data that I have is our attendance. Last year we were at 88.4%. This year we have a growth of 7.1 and we are at 95.51. Let's give let's give us a half. And you know what I have to say sometimes

for TK and preschool it's hard for some parents um to say hey you know what he says he doesn't feel well. Sometimes it's it would be nice if the the parents would just keep them home. We don't want them to do that. Okay, let me repeat that. We do not want the the parent to say, "Oh, little Johnny doesn't feel well. We're just going to keep them home." We want the parents and students to be eager about coming to school to get their um education whether they say they have a tummy ache because they don't want to get up for school. So I have seen or we have seen an improvement from 88 to 95 and we are hoping to move up. We at um Florida Street we have a wellness center and we've been

working on the um PBIS expectations. There is a pony buck store. You'll see the little one um counting her pony bucks on the side there to win a prize and the dual immersion class. They have to count the pony books in Spanish. So, and they do it. It is great to see. I am so excited to say for in a long it's been a long time. Our students went on a field trip this year and they went to Garden Works and as you can see in the picture down here, they were so excited about it. the they came home with a little um I don't want to say care packages, but they came home with gifts that helped them learn about planting the seed, gardening, and um it was definitely a learning thing for uh

learning progress for our little ones. And we can count that as maybe u going into the science area. We also have another program um Rebecca and Chelsea's class who are going to go to the children's museum. Another um incentive that we have um we have at Florida Street is we have new cameras. We've also uh directed the and to have a active supervision and safety protocols. We've changed that. And in the past, I used to let the parents walk the students to the classroom because they were a little on the uh you know little young side. But now we have changed our procedures to have the parents only drop the students off in front of the school and they would um they had to make the change in the middle of the year. The parents

did a great job of of doing that and that is for the safety of our staff and our students. That's a huge plus. The way we have increased parent um engagement and just the communication is the parents get a weekly reminder of what is going on. of the week ahead and the teachers use parent square to communicate with the parents. Our par parent engagement we've had back to school night. We had open open house. I had some visitors come which would it was great to have them uh two of my board members come and visit and see what was going on at Florida Street. We have also had attendance um the parents come on the campus for perfect attendance and we've also had a celebration for attendance for the trimester. Another engagement that we had

that was so wonderful. It was the litta palooa and our students performed for it and it was really good to see. We had a great turnout for that. And then as mentioned before, last week we had a dual emergence spring parent meeting um here at the high school. Oh my dear. So that's it. I want to say I want to say from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Florida Street and we I'm going to say our school Florida Street would not be where they are if it wasn't for your support. So once again, um I really thank you for your support and supporting Florida Street. Do we have any other any questions? >> Can I just say that I love that they had a field trip at such a young

age? >> Wait, say it again. I said, "I love that they had a field trip." >> Yes. >> I think that's so exciting. >> And we are definitely planning on on going uh next year. Definitely planning on going back again next year. >> There's also um my grandson came and we went to the um San Bernardino Museum. I don't know if you've seen that. The county museum. I mean, we saw little ones there. Um, it was amazing and it's not that far. I think it took us 20 minutes to get there. So, it was a very exciting um, field trip even for me for for my 30-year-old grandson. So, >> wouldn't you say the last part? I'm sorry. I didn't >> It's It's the San Bernardino um, County Museum, and it's not very far. And

they have they have animals, they have all kinds of, you know, things, history. So it might fit into the social studies that we were talking about, you know, >> right? >> Anyway, very exciting. >> And maybe in the future we could look at that. >> Yeah, it wasn't very expensive. I think it was $10 or something like that. >> So, I'm sure children could get in there free or, you know, >> pretty close to that. >> Any other questions, comments? Okay, thank you everybody. Item 6.2, special education presentation. I would like to invite Mr. Worththington to share tonight's presentation. All right. Good evening, President Ruiz, esteemed board members, Superintendent Davis, executive cabinet, and community. Tonight's theme is roots to results, which reflects both where we've been and where we're going as a special education department.

So, like a tree, meaningful growth starts at the roots. So this year we've been really intentional and focused on strengthening these roots in special education by building in processes, procedures, and some of that that we'll get into here. Oh, our mission vision. Yeah, I'll press the button slowly. All right, here we go. Ready? All right. So, building the structure takes a lot of writing. So, we've had a team of staff get together and help write this handbook. So, we adopted it over the summer, released it this fall, and we turned into something great, which I'll get into in just a minute. But this handbook establishes everything that we as a district have agreed to do and the process by which we're going to hold ourselves accountable for. We've also written home instruction, home hospital instruction

services. We have a training on it for all of our teachers. How does this look? We uh teach our parents. This is what we're looking for. This is how it operates. So we have a whole system in place on everything for our M services or education related mental health services. These are for our students, for our mental health therapists. They go in and work hands-on with students on not deep level therapy, but just how can we help them access the curriculum better in the classroom and remove some of these uh emotional barriers that may be inhibiting them. Uh and with that, uh we've created a suicide prevention manual, how to do risk assessments, what to look for, watch out for. uh our mental health workers are constantly u working on this manual, updating it and

are able to instruct and teach others on how to look for these cues. Uh a lot of our students that come with emotional uh disabilities are prone to this. >> Our other areas that we've been focusing on uh some of our processes and procedures we've been working on. So the related service independent instruct assistance is called Arisa and it is where we are providing some services to students that need that a little bit more intensive support and we've come up with a system that we have to look at yearly now so we can reassess to make sure those students are needing those systems and we've also working on a fade out plan so we can fade out those adult um services so the students become more independent and more ready for the future. Our last

one, our next one we've been working on is our curb to curb transportation. We've created a form that we now use that is federally guided and it allows us to um help our students um get the services they need to get to school so they could enhance their educational environment. But it doesn't provide transportation to all students. It's only to students that are needing that extra support. Our next part was our change of placement. We've had a lot of students and and uh changes. Oh, sorry. Thank you. I'm normally really loud, too. Um we've had a lot of changes and movement within our uh our staffing and our programs, but we need a way of tracking it. So, we beca we created a change of placement form in Google so we can track where our

students are going, make sure they're getting that data driven um component built in and we can make sure we're getting them placed in the right programs at the right times. Our next one we're working on is our least restrictive environment, LRE. Um I am working on a sitebased student service calculator that is built into SACE but we're going to design it for each school site so that they we can put in the services they're receiving and get the right calculation of percentage of time in gened as in sped and making sure that their time in the correct settings are matching what's really on the IEP. We're also working on systems instruction and structure. Um, our first one is Teachtown is our curriculum for our mod severe classrooms. It's evidence-based. It is standards aligned and we

are really excited to see where it's going and how engaging it is with our kids. They finally have curriculum that they can access, they can thrive, and they can actually meet those standards now. and our teachers have been getting ongoing support and and really have um shown us some great things as we've come into different classrooms and seeing it actually work and really the kids have actually had some really engaging conversations around the curriculum. So excited to see that. Next one is our goal book. Goals are really hard and challenging to write in IEPs. We want a tool in which we can write ambitious goals that can make progress and to really align with our children's needs and goal book allows that. It also is a tool for teachers to use to build that curriculum

and pick make that curriculum more meaningful to that student and to that to show that progress in the long term. It also gives us a way of tracking goal progress over time. So, we actually have really good data to show that our kids are making progress and where that progress is. Um, next is our extended school year. We're using um the extended school year worksheet and we're designing we're not designing it. we are actually utilizing it more purposefully so we know which students need that extra support during the summer to make sure that they don't fall behind and they make progress and they keep that progress going when moving forward. Our last one is Seth and I will turn it over to him. All right, dig into Seth. So Seth is our special education technical

handbook. So, Seth is a closed AI source. It doesn't pull information from anywhere else except for what we feed it. We fed it. Those manuals I showed you in the beginning of the slide deck, those are all fed to Seth. Seth then takes that, analyzes it, and when questions are asked of Seth, it only pulls from that information in in those sources. So, as we update our processes and procedures, we feed it to Seth to make sure it is uh up to date on everything. So as teach teachers are going in there pair educators administrators they're getting the latest information based on how we do things here in banning only not from any other source. At first Seth was slow to start off. Uh it started off with maybe 240 questions being asked of it.

Uh the next month it grew to 520 and then by January we're over a thousand messages being asked of Seth. So that tells us that staff are finding value in it because they're coming back and repeatedly using it. Uh the company uh creatively focused has informed us that they also have seen a change in the type of questions that are being asked of Seth. They're not just routine questions. They're really indepth questions on procedural processes on how to help their students. So they're really using Seth to help write better IEPs and make sure that they're staying within the legal framework. So, some early results. Uh, we did a survey earlier in the year um and it came out about 71% of our admin felt comfortable in their roles in an IEP. Uh, we did a

survey a few months later after releasing Seth and 100% of uh the respondents repeated uh that said they had 100% confidence in their roles. Uh, to date, we now have a 98.9% accuracy in meeting our timelines for our initial evaluations. uh we only have a 3.9 percentage rate which is down almost in half from last year and uh 71% graduation rate and that's where we're going to focus on this upcoming year is on our instructional delivery. So let's get into some data. So here's a year-over-year of what we've looked like the past three years 712, 744, and 801. So, every year we continually are adding to our special education population. Here's a breakdown year-over-year of the types of disabilities uh that are prevalent here in our community. The SLD is our our biggest population followed

by autism, speech, and then OI. So, let's take a look at the numbers of of what got us here. This year, we've had 103 interim IEPs. So in these are students who already have existing IPS moving into our school district. 191 referrals. So these referrals are made by teachers, by principles, by parents, uh or a third party agency like IRC. They will make these referrals as hey I think we need to test a student uh to see if there's any type of a disability. So we had 191 referrals that we did this year. Of those 24 did not qualify. So we have a pretty high percentage of students qualifying for special ed services. Uh and this year we had 17 students exit special education services altogether. Many of those are uh students with speech delays.

So that brings us to about 19.8% special education rate overall. So but if we look at it as a county the average is 16.4%. So we're not too far off what the county average is. Uh and even though a lot of our enrollment is down overall in general education special numbers are are increasing and this is consistent with every single district I know in in Riverside County SULPA but I know in the state as well. Uh every single district has gone up except for four districts in our SULPA this year in special education services. Training is a foundation. We've had some really great dedicated PDs um especially for our new teachers and our teachers of that were really um struggling. So, we reached out to our local SULPA, which I'll talk about in a minute,

and they have some dedicated and very knowledgeable staff there that provide PD for all of the districts within the area. And they've been providing us very specific pointed um PD to help our teachers grow and become really a tool in which our students can really thrive from. Um, the SULPA is our local agency. It's our special education local plan and they have very specific roles within our county. They provide PD. They provide guidance. They also um provide help us with our funding and a few other things, but their PD is really what can really drive a lot of our progress and we utilize them for a lot of that. Um, our strategic focus is on retention of our teachers, but really we want to give them some really good solid foundation just like what we're

starting here with our special ed, our foundation. Our teachers need that good foundation PD support with our with our TOSA, which is our teacher on special assignment. she goes into the classrooms on top of the PD they get they get her support to help with classroom management also with writing IEPs and lesson planning. So all of those things really build our staff up so we can retain the best teachers we can so we can enhance our learning environment for our kids. And lastly, our every month, the second early release day of every month, we have dedicated to special ed training for our teachers and for our paras. It's all done with creatively focused, which is our company that oversees our Seth, but they have really great designed online training that is really find we found

that has been really maximized a lot by our staff. On average we have 60 staff every month attending the training. >> A quick question um regarding the SULPA survey how many participants were there? >> There is 18 right now and every one of them has had nothing but positive things to say and they felt like their training has been meaningful and really have used it in the classroom. >> Thank you. Can I ask a question too before you go on? I'm sorry. Um, for your PDS that you do the second early release day, do you also offer that to your gen education teachers or general education teachers? >> Everybody. Okay. >> Anybody can log in and has access to >> and do we have general education teachers attending as well as special education teachers? >>

Data minded to see if they the difference between gen and special populations. >> That's something I can look at. All right. So, next steps, we're going to continue laying our foundation. Uh, next year we're committing quarterly to going into the classrooms. We already started doing roundts at every school site, meeting with special education teachers and pair educators uh at the ground level and asking them what their needs are, making sure that we're getting uh immediate feedback on and how help them and serve them on on their campus. make sure that they have what they need to help our students. Uh Mr. Davis talked about the walkthroughs that we had earlier. U the biggest positive comment that they kept saying over and over again with all of our school sites was that they were amazed and

impressed of how engaging our staff are with our students. And in fact, they commented that they they couldn't even distinguish between who the teacher was and the pair educator was because our staff are that involved with our students. So that was one thing they said continuously at every school site like wow your staff are really engaged. They don't often see that at other school sites they visit. Uh instruction we are working on our instruction and how to better deliver it next year. That is going to be our focus. This year we're start building that foundation. Next year we're going to work on okay now we have foundation. How are we going to deliver this instruction along with the professional development and then continue on building more systems and root structures. So, as we close out,

I want to share a phone call I received some years ago. It was a Monday morning and I got a phone call that my 94 year old grandmother was being rushed to the hospital for chest pains. Uh, not able to move, arm was aching. Uh, so we all thought, okay, you know, this is the phone tree lit up. Everybody's calling everybody, you know, get down to grandma's house or actually to the hospital. Um, and so, but uh the doctors ran all the tests. We figured, okay, we're it's going to be a heart attack. So, it's going to be something. And everything came back positive. There was nothing wrong with her. So, they started asking, "So, what was going on? What did you did you eat something different yesterday? What' you guys do?" I said, "Well,"

my grandma's like, "Well, we went to church and then after church we went to the nursery. We bought a tree." I said, "Okay." So, yeah. And then we uh took it home and then grandfather and I we planted the tree in the backyard. I said, "What do you mean?" So, we look out there and sure enough, there's a tree in the backyard. So, they took the time to take this tree that was sticking out of their trunk. Both of them, my 90s six-year-old grandfather and her, carried it to the backyard. They got the shovels out, took the grass away, started digging a hole, took it out of the box, planted it, and, you know, patted all the the soil back on top of it. So, she was sore. She was aching from all the work

that she was doing. So, planted a tree is hard work. It takes time and effort. Kind of like what we're doing here in special education. We have to take the time. And a lot of the time it's it's the unseen work that you have to do that's essential for in order for something to grow. So it might not be the most timely or uh immediate, but this is work that has to be done so that we can plant this tree and have it grow for other staff and students to be uh benefiting from the fruits of it of the tree. So thank you. >> Any questions? >> Is it okay? Yeah. Okay. I have two questions please. Um going to your slide regarding the least restrictive environment. Did you have data on on that? Like

are we having an increase? Are we putting >> we don't have correct calculations. That's why that calculator is going to be so important. We're noticing um when you look at the data that one student may have the same minutes as another student in special ed, but their calculation for time in special ed is radically different. >> So, we needed to streamline that across all settings so we know exactly what time they're really spending in a special ed classroom and what time they're spending in the general ed classroom. So, that calculator will help us get that streamlined straight across. Um and also another way of looking at it as I could bring that data back is the annual determination letter we get every every spring which we get from the state and that tells us our

percentage in LRE um for just sped students only. Um and it tells us it breaks it down by two breaks of one is 80% or more in general ed and 40% or less in in general ed. >> Okay. Okay. So, >> so we just want to improve those numbers but actually have really accurate numbers because right now it's not accurate. >> So, you have a baseline. >> We have a very rough baseline that's not accurate. >> Okay. So, when would you have >> next year we'll have accuracy because we'll have the calculators as we start doing IEPs. >> Okay. Great. And then my second question was on your slide where you had the different numbers of like the interims, the referrals, the did not qualify and exits for the referrals. Uh that was that was

069191. I know you mentioned there's different sources of referrals. Do you have the breakdown to see how many you're getting from IRC? How many are you getting from the teachers or the sites or I forget the different category? >> Right. We can get that breakdown for you. I didn't break it down for this slide, but yes, we can break it down. >> Okay. Thank you. >> I want to thank you um Mr. Worthington and um for the fact that you all both took or all of you took this time to create this system. I mean this is impressive. It's exactly what we wanted when you started and we didn't I mean I don't think we conveyed it exactly this way but to create this functional communication uh to support parents, teachers, um our students and

the district is phenomenal in such a short time. It's very commendable. Thank you both for this. Any other questions? No. Thank you. >> Item 6.3, business services, approval of administrative regulation 3541, transportation routes and services. >> This item is for the board to approve administrative regulation 3541, transportation routes and services. 081comments. Who would like to go first? >> I can go first. All right. Uh good evening or almost nighttime, right? Um I was able to attend the Lion King Jr. with my family and it was amazing just like we've been hearing the entire board meeting basically from various people that have spoken on it. I really am appreciative of these type of productions that are available to our students, our staff and our community. Um I always look forward to those to attending those. I was able to attend the boys and the girls uh first soccer game at Nichollet Middle School. Um the students, the athletes, they they played hard. Um they didn't get the win. However, I'm hopeful for the next game they will. What I noticed about this the good sportsmanship. Even um students that

were on the bleachers were um telling the athletes as they were coming back to sit down, you know, it's okay. You did great. Like that's that's the beauty about sports and I love that um there's that sportsmanship on the field and off the field and by the students and families are are um supporting them. So um shout out to Nichollet's um students and teams. Um also I attended the DI spring parent meeting. I missed the first one at the beginning of the year. I believe my husband attended that one, but I was really impressed. Um, it's a different uh it's been different from the others that I've I've attended in the past. Um, it felt like you were in a classroom because they were actually teaching you a lesson, engaging you. They even had the

cahoot and so everyone's on their phone trying to be and answer the questions. It was just the engagement was amazing. Um during that meeting the performances um I think it was um was it Mr. Romero or Roman from the high school that performed with his wife um they were professional um Flororico dancers and they did an amazing performance. Our TK students that were performing and then our uh Flororico club from Central. Everyone was amazing. Like I'm really grateful for those opportunities for our students and families as well. Um, I'm looking forward to open house at Central tomorrow as well as Cinco de Mayo celebration. I know that our students are working really hard. Um, and again, I'm very happy that we have field trips for our students. I know that some of our students at

Nicollet were at the Angel Stadium today. Um, it was a steam oriented one and that was exciting for them. Um, I know they have a Medieval Times field trip coming up and then just hearing about Colette's presentation that even our TK students are having these field trips. I I had no idea. So, it's amazing that we are making those field trips happen and I hope that we are able to continue uh to learn how to navigate with the new rules for field trips so that we continue giving these opportunities to our students. Other than that, thank you so much for everything that you do and that's it. I hope everyone's having a good night. Um, so I've been able to attend a few of the high school softball games which we've been doing great. We've

been really good. Really I'm very proud of our team. Um, I've I also attended the Lion King performance which was amazing. Our school did absolutely amazing. I'm so proud of them. They did such a good job. I saw Mr. Paws there. I I see Mr. Paws at a at a lot of the functions actually. So you're I We see you. We do see you, Mr. Paws. Um I went to the awards ceremony last night where our students were uh Oh, I apologize. I'm Thank you. We're recognized. I'm sorry. It's been a long day. Um, I'm I'm extremely proud of our students and they did such a they've just been doing amazing. I'm I'm extremely proud. Jasmine, uh, Paloma, Mary, and um, Luke, Luke, all they all we're so proud of them. We we are very
