And I wanted to also that board members who were unable to be here wanted to extend their sorry for not being able to be here. They were sad and not both are dealing with their own emergencies today and they were felt please let us know that all the meetings they went to this would be the answer. Um and also uh I wanted to thank our culinary uh our food services department. I'm so used to thanking Jeffrey uh but our food services department for wh this great spread so they did it awesome. Thank you very All right, we'll go to sleep. Pledge to the flag to the United States of America and to the republic for
it stands one nation under God indivisible liberty and justice for all. All right. Item number 12 is announcements of any reportable taking close session. In respect to item A, uh there was no action. Item B, uh the board voted unanimously in close session to approve the setting. Item 13, we have public commen. Under this item, the public is invited to address items that are not listed on the agenda. Speakers are limited to three minutes each. And I know Anyway, item 14 is special business and it tells me that I get to turn this over to you. >> Wow. All right. Well, this is not a normal board meeting, but we love seeing everybody here, especially when it's for something as joyous as this. I have to tell you that Every year I do this, it's
always bittersweet and a little sad uh from because you're saying bye to some team members who are now part of the Gateway family. Uh the sacrifices they've made, kids in our community and beyond is unbelievable. Um this year I will say it hit home. Uh there's people whom I've worked and are such a big part of the heartbeat here in Gateway at all of the sites. Um and I'm so excited to celebrate them. We not going to quite say goodbye yet tonight because we get to keep you for another month or so. But know this, what you've done matters, uh, to our community, to your colleagues, to me, and so many that you've touched that you don't even realize. And it's important for you to know that this life journey that you've taken on has
been one that's been noble and uh, something that really can't be taught from working in education so long. I want to thank you before uh, we turn it over to the program. also go to our winners. We're going to celebrate them tonight as well, award winners and folks from the district and then get to embarrass you a little bit more. But thank you for coming tonight. And I will say this just to not make it awkward. Once this is over exist and also if the people are outside you're more than willing to come over here. If you could just say one brownie for me that'd be great if they're uh right over here to sneak in if you'd like. If we move like if everyone roll a footage Okay. So, we're going to start by
honoring our retirees first and then we're going to show a a brief video and uh and then once we get a chance to see that, we'll have some uh some folks come up and talk about each each retiree. So, I can direct your attention to either screen Thank you. Is that Thank you. Hey. Uhhuh. That's always hard to watch. I'm sorry. That is wonderful. memories and u you know some of the the ones within the valley were touching but all of the I don't want to name some name you all but that was awesome. Thank you for those submitting the pictures and I'm gonna get through this. We're going to go on with the ceremony now. So I Ross So, we have two Buckeye retirees that weren't able to make it tonight, Tommy Borne and
Tammy Dear. And we just wish them well in their retirement. Thank them for their service. They've been very valuable members of Gateway and the Buckeye team. again the ones that are speaking and you just come you can kind of follow along with the program and just come up after for you to speak your >> so I'm speaking on behalf of Cynthia and Cynthia was only at grand notes for a short time but she made a lasting impression working in the kitchen she found joy in connecting with students each each day always taking time to talk and brighten their days. Her kindness and warmth did not go unnoticed. As she looks ahead to her retirement, I know she's excited to spend more time with your granddaughter. A welldeserved next chapter. >> You know, Mr. Our retirees
are getting really apples and years of service on it. Really cool. >> Thank you. >> Thanks. Joe for up here. >> So, you may not know this, but Joe Fortress began his education career at Buckeye. He spent eight years as a kid at Buckeye. And um I've enjoyed sharing stories with him about what Buckeye was like when he was um there as a student. And just today I learned he got to watch the library building being built. And so uh those have been great conversations. Um Joe came to Gateway in 2015. Um he's been a dedicated staff member for 11 years. He started at Central Valley High School and then transferred to Buckeye as our maintenance one and has been there for eight years. Um he's one of those people that is constantly busy because
if you know maintenance one job, they always have something to do on our school sites. But it's not just fixing things. People really connect with Joe and he's going to be greatly missed by all the relationships he's built with the staff. The staff really appreciate him. And I was talking with Joe today and said one of the things he's going to miss his little kids will come up to him, Mr. Joe. Mr. Joe, and they'll tell him something funny, something off the wall. It's like only something kids could get. So Joe as he begins in chapter he's not escaping maintenance. He's going to be doing maintenance at home and said she has a list already. Even today he was saying I wonder if I'll have to make her submit a work order. So he's going
to spend time gardening and enjoying um time with his wife. Joe, thank you for your dedication and impact you've made on Gateway and Buckeye. You'll truly be missed. We wish you the best. never. Yeah. So, Bill, could you come up? >> Right. Bill has been a dedicated part of Gateway for nearly 20 years. He began his career at Toyo before moving to Grand Oaks where he made a long lasting impact ever since. Over the years, he's taught multiple grade levels, but for the past decade, he has found his home in second grade. Students truly love being in Mr. Hansen's class, where they feel supported, valued, and inspired to learn. He has had the remarkable ability to build positive, lasting relationships with his students, creating classroom environments where they thrive. We are grateful for his years
of commitment and the difference he continues to make every day. So you know was given instruction. Thank you. That's good. I'm going to hide behind the script. It is such an honor to stand here with all your years in education. Um, it's an incredible accomplishment, but what stands out even more is the way that you spent those years truly loving students for who they are. You've impacted so many lives, including my own children, and for that, I'm deeply grateful. On a personal note, getting to work alongside you as an instructional coach was something I will always value. You've been a go-to colleague for so many of us. Someone who could turn into the um sorry, someone who can turn the best of times great and um the challenging ones better, too. >> And of course,
we can't talk about Kathy without talking about her humor. was gonna say sorry >> and your timing's unmatched. Um, you have an incredible ability to ease tension and bring people together and at just the right comment in just the right time. Kathy, your impact goes far beyond Shasta Lake School. You are loved across community. We wish you the very best in retirement, especially as you get to spend time with your family and your grandfather. You've given so much to us and now it's your time. We will deeply miss you and we are so happy. I got upset with Katie because Kathy taught my children to kind of Um I'm I don't know. I think I should bring up mom and dad. So um Julie and Brad, come on up. It's half my English department. Try
because I'm I'm not scripting that. I should have been smarter. So first I'm going to talk about Brad. Um, the funny thing is I was a student with with Brad and now I'm his boss. So, uh, not anymore. Um, Brad really struggled with uh, this decision, you know, should I do it, should I not? And I know he's going to be so happy for doing this in the long run. Um, but we hopefully will get glimpses of him maybe on the tennis court. I don't know yet. What I want to say about Brad is he's kind of been the dad of CV for a lot of years. Um he he gives that sense of peace and um calming when sometimes things are going arry. I look to him like in when I'm kind of going
off um in a meeting and I see is Brad with me here or is he not? And um you know Brad's always gives that smile of encouragement to keep things going and I think his students feel that and I try to sweeten the pot with the best schedule ever and it still didn't keep him there. So um this is a really good decision for his wife and his kids and I think he's going to be so happy for it. But we are very appreciative of all the years and we're going to miss you very much. Yeah, he's getting his acc he decided it was official Monday. So that's why. So we I knew. >> So and now we have Julie Nage. >> You have a very sweet connection with her because we went to college
together. She decided to go late in life back to school and so we had an classes at Chico State and then our Spanish immersion program together that she can no espanol so she she still did not learn. The funny thing is her husband could not be here because he's in Mexico getting a crown so he's not here. But I want to say for Julie, Julie has brought the fire and the spunk um to Stevie as an eighth grade teacher coming over all all the time. She did activities and I'll never forget Peel Peel the banana. And I think she brought this fire inspiring kids to, you know, want to get involved at CV and do their best. And I appreciate her directness in the classroom. like cell phones aren't a thing in her classroom because
they can't be and that's just how it is and it's respected and so with Julie's years of um expectations the students know and I attribute a lot of our test scores to both but Julie Brad just moved to the juniors but Julie's been there in the juniors for years and we're at 71% because of people like Julie so we really appreciate her and she's going to love her grandbabies and she's going to love her travel and her husband's retiring at the same time. So, they're going to have a wonderful retirement and hopefully she comes back and visits us here and here and there. So, thank you, Julie. We love you. All right. >> Yeah. Alex, get your heels on. Don't hit them. Round of applause. >> You know, there's a lot of great stories we
could tell that probably aren't audience appropriate for a board meeting. Uh knows a few of them, but uh you know, >> obviously we can't get into a minute or two the impact you've made over her career, but We just can't thank you enough and and uh as excited as we are to see you move on, you know, we're obviously a little bit sad to see you go, but we know you'll always be a part of the lifeblood of Gable Unified. We certainly hope to see you around campus soon enough. So, thank you once again. One more round of applause for our So, now we're going to shift over to our employees of the year. We're going to do a quick little video and uh w your screen. >> Oh, there you go. One more round
of applause for program. >> Thank you. So tonight, um, anyone that knows me knows I can talk on and on and especially about this employee of mine. Uh, so today I have the privilege of recognizing someone who's truly demonstrated demonstrated excellence within our organization. I'm going to ask Denise Adter if you could come up and stand with me, please. >> I'm gonna elevator hit you in one minute. Come on up, Denise. You promised me you weren't going to cry. Denise has consistently shown an exceptional level of dedication in everything that she takes on. Whether facing tight routing challenges or complexities with her training schedule, she approaches her work with focus, determination, and an uplifting attitude to all of those around. What truly sets Denise apart is her commitment to teamwork. She doesn't just contribute, she
exceeds the expectation. She supports her colleagues, shares her knowledge, and helps create an environment where everyone can succeed around her. Most importantly, Denise's overall dedication has played a meaningful role in growth in the success of our department. I don't want to cry right now, but it is with great excitement to share Denise has been accepted to the bus driver instructional certification course at the headquarters of California Department of Ed. I look forward to working alongside you as a state certified instructor come next full year. Thank you to for transportation. >> You want to get in the middle? I don't wherever you >> Andy. >> Thank you. >> Well, I get to hand out nutrition services employee of the year. And I'm looking for Kevin Boto, but he looks a little different tonight. Yeah, you know,
every time I come in to work, I always I always look forward to hear what's going on, Big K. You know, and that's Kevin every morning when I see him. You know, we we honored him with our championship belt a couple months ago, right? Which is given out each month to somebody who shows what service for Gable Unifi. Kevin continues to do an amazing job for us. Um he is a man of many hats, helps out wherever he's needed, but has a tremendous impact on our food service department and uh he has really grown. I mean working with him at Sun Valley and then seeing him over here at the district level. Always willing to take things on when we ask him you know when you come to work you always usually don't want to
hear why we can't do something. You want to hear how we can figure it out, how we can get things done. Kevin's always one of those people that is solutionoriented and we're happy to have I want to congratulate you Kevin on this award. stand for a long and as you probably can tell she she lives quite the life outside of work. So we all can't wait till Monday morning. How do I set you up in less than a minute? So many words come to mind you. You're well respected. You work with precision. You're energetic, efficient, exceptionally active. You never miss a detail. Your nurturing is staff. And I can first we all know your favorite word has changed. All of these words are me. But thank you and exceptionally deserving of this award. You are
very important part and to our business. It's our privilege and honor to give you the word of the year. Hold on. Hold on. Just a sec. is gonna help me. Let's have Lorie Croll come on up for Tammy and I get to share her at Grand Oaks and Shasta Lake School. So, we're going to share in our one minuteish speech. All right. Um the first thing and we'll see if I steal the doors. Um she is the most energetic person you will ever met when you meet. She has she's full of energy, positive positive. Okay. Well, I have had the honor of working with Lori as a classroom teacher and a principal and it has been a joy in both roles. She cares deeply for her students. She's an advocate for her students and she
it is so fun to see how much she loves her students through her eyes. is it it just warms you when she talks about her students. >> She cares deeply about this the English language learners students that she works with and she works really hard to help them communicate and be successful at school. She's a world traveler. She goes the most amazing places and my favorite is the most recent picture that she sent us of well I happened to get a hold of it. You know it's Disneyland. see you smile huge uh with I think it was she's been amazing places but that was the she and I'd also like to say that she works really hard with families she goes above and beyond so they feel connected with the school a little less and
like I said she's always always always positive is moving the microphone pretty fast because Lori can talk. Doesn't matter anyone. >> All right, Dave, get up here. So, I get the honor of introducing David Israel. They came to Toy, I don't know if you guys know where to, it's the 88y old school out at the corner of Shastana Boulevard. Uh, and just like an 88-year-old school, uh, things happen out there. Uh, the one thing I can tell about Mr. Dave is that he had he never bats an eyelash. whether the sewage system is losing it or uh or there's stray cats all over the place. Uh he is he is always there day in day out smiling. He has a plan for the future and he's working hard. He brings the kids in um and
assist and if if there's anything about Toyon and our group out there. It's hard work and and and Dave really fits that bill. Whether it's, you know, teaching the kids chess or teaching them how to set rocks or teach them how to chase cats. He works harder than any maintenance crew I've ever had. And I've worked in a lot of different districts and I'm really happy to give this award. I'd like to introduce Rachel Jacobs. Rachel has such a positive impact as part of Grand Oaks. She has a unique ability to build strong, trusting relationships with students, making each one feel seen, heard, and valued. Students know that they can go to her anytime, whether they need guidance, support, or simply someone to listen. What truly sets Rachel apart is how deeply she cares. She
consistently goes above and beyond to help students navigate the challenges and celebrate their successes. Her compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment make a lasting difference in the lives of so many. We are incredibly fortunate to have her as part of our grand community. We have award this year. I'm proud to recognize all >> before I get to my strip. What year did you start Bren? 95. Okay. So Brenda we have current. So this is why we did this distinguished service award. Um I met Brenda 22 years ago. I was a lot younger. Had a lot more hair. It was that I lost all day. She was a computer lab tech at Buckeye Middle School. There was a young teacher over there for and I walked in there and she had a very organized, well-ran class. The
students were on task and and I knew I could be here too. So, I appreciate that. Um, so I'll get to my script. It is my honor to recognize Brenda with this distinguished service award. As I mentioned, she came to our district in 1987 of the district. Right. Yep. >> And today she holds the remarkable distinction of being the longest senior employee. Brenda's journey began as a volunteer in her two sons classes where she discovered how much she enjoyed working with students. From there she began her career as a par profofessional at project city school now grand oaks and also served at deer creek now sh school see she's been through a lot of changes here over the years she continued to grow with the district working as a computer lab technician at Buckeye middle
school which is now the gateway learning center campus then at Central Valley High School as a lab tech and then when we closed the computer labs she transitioned over to the technology department where she's continued to work with me since as IT tech one. As I mentioned, she's seen tremendous changes over the years from computer labs to one to one devices, iPods, iPads, iMacs, Chromebooks, every student now. But through it all, she's remained faithful, adaptable, and still is deeply committed. This same lady I saw deeply committed to students 22 years ago is still committed to the students and the staff. Thank you for your decades of service, your dedication, the legacy that you continue to leave this district. I'm sorry. Congratulations on his Thank you. It's so Don is not here tonight. She would love
to be but she was not able to make it. And did Katie come out here and Elma and Rachel? All of us. Let's go. >> So the little one because they were honored at the Damore uh for our educators of the year and what you see here is the best that Gateway has to offer. They do a phenomenal job. We've bragged about them a couple times already, but I wanted to do it one last time. Katie is our high school educator of the year. Rachel is our classified educator of the year. Of course, our elementary educator of the year, Elva Tvaris. And I missed Katie when I first left, you know, I was going down to be a principal somewhere else. And I remember getting a call from some principal, you know, she's a little
shorter than Katie, but she calls so excited. We got to go. Everybody always says, "Oh, we got the chyro and she was so pumped up and it has definitely turned out just like like we thought it would." Alex Katie, we're really blessed to have you. We're so grateful that you're part of our team and we want to congratulate you on the support. So once again, congratulations. The middle one here is a big troublemaker. trouble. >> You know, Rachel comes around, every time she comes around, you just get she has a love for life that is feeling. She uh is is one of those people that probably doesn't need to, but sticks around because she loves what she does. Uh she is one that is loyal and very caring for kids, has a deep just passion
for students, and the biggest heart. And we're so thankful to have you as part of our team. And this will be the probably the one time I'm going to be sincere because we're always messing with each other with kitchens. Um because when she comes, I always know when she's in the building, she she always she comes in and it's a great sound to hear her because she always brings a smile to people and brings energy. And as all our educators do, she loves kids. She cares about kids. That gets lost a lot with a lot of the distractions that we read about, with a lot of the politics that you read about. At the end of the day, the educators in our district, they just love kids. They love her. And it's something that always
touches my heart and I'm so grateful that you're part of our team. Thank you. Is one that is at Buckeye and she was phenomenal teacher. She's an instructional coach. She does. She does drives the bus too. A lot of time yeah I got to be careful person is really and a literacy coordinator as well. So if I forget anything, please let me know because have so many things to brag about. Sometimes things slip past the goalies. But Ela is tremendous at what she does. Incredibly smart, insightful, uh has ideas for things that you wouldn't think about. And um oftentimes when I go there, if I need to know the buzz of what's happening or what have you, hey, how things are going at Buck or how things are going in the district, what's going on?
And Ela will always give me kind of the state of the union in terms of, you know, how the kids are learning, how things are going on campus. It's always a positive thing. And no matter what roadblocks are in front of her, she always looks for ways around them and she'll say, "We can we can get there." And uh she gives tremendous insight and we were really happy to give her this award. It was welld deserved. And I know her husband's here, which is nice to see. And I know Katie is too. There's other family there. take it on. Um, but uh, once again, we just wanted to congratulate you. Even though we bragged about him before, we wanted to do it one last time because it's just a worthy honor uh, that we're we're
excited to share with you. So, this entire group, round of applause. All right. I was going to take a picture. So, with that being said, I think uh you probably most of you will have other plans tonight. Um but I want to thank everybody for coming out. If you want to grab a cookie or something, we'll probably have a little brief two minute break. I'll let people exit out. And once again, thank you everybody. question. There's no How do you feel? inside. Yeah. question. I don't think so. Next There's more. Thank you. Yeah. >> All right. Well, there are plenty of seats. need to tell her take on picture. I know. >> Trying to get different angles. So there >> wow. >> All right. >> Okay. Item 15. >> Microphone. Should I stay right here?
>> She's fine. >> I'm good. Okay. >> I did tell him to put a microphone. >> I forgot. >> Right. Although it was great to sit through all of that and see all of our wonderful employees being recognized. Um, but I did want to talk about negotiations are still ongoing between GTA and the district. We have not come to an agreement at this time, but I'm hopeful that we're closer than it seems. Um, our next negotiation is April 24th and we look forward to meeting and coming to an agree agreement that benefits every Thank you. CSA here. >> Well, they all left, but congratulate everybody. Right. It's actually it's going to be different not seeing like some of their faces all the time. I'm really gonna miss that. as they were talking like Julie N.
She just came into my mind how not only is she a great teacher but just a great person in general when my son Justin was in high school he was very sick when he was finally able to come home after six months in the hospital Julie actually came up for home and like just sat with us and encouraged him to keep going and don't give up. So I really wish he was here because that that meant a lot to me and to him I don't without her, he probably wouldn't have that threat. But anyways, um we're looking forward to negotiations. We haven't sat down yet, but I know we are and I know we'll come up with what's, you know, the best for everybody. Um we're looking forward to moving on with next year. Thank
you for the notices for our classified employees as to where they're going. Um they were being a little anxious waiting. I was hearing about it. So, thank you for that. Other than that, we're good to go. >> Thanks, >> a little bit. Would you like to start? >> Sure. I'll stand up for uh we just got back from spring break. I am really happy we got that break. It's been uh it was well needed out there. Uh he's gone now. Dave's been working his tail off. some sewage issues and you're studentable for kids doing good. We're getting getting ready to do a lot of testing. So, we're getting things we've got a lot of intakes both in the CVS program as well as our testing. But, u everything's going well. looking forward. We have a
uh this Friday we're going to be taking kids out to chess college to do chess preview day where they show all the different CP programming they do out there that's going to go for tomorrow back to school. >> The last open house for the lake school is actually middle school. So, it's 5:30 to 6:30. And then next Thursday at 9:30, we're having um Grand Oaks 45 and Shasta Lake 45 and 47 come over for a big welcome and that's >> so on April 1st we had our open house. We had a really great turnout. I wasn't sure so hard that day, but a lot of people came. Pair of clubs served hot dogs and chips. Um, I'd like to thank Dale for coming, although we never did see each other. I think we were just
filmed around cooking, too. >> What's that? >> Bill. >> Yeah. >> So, um, a couple of things. Uh we have our incoming freshman dance. We're bringing that back. I don't think it's been around for some time. I know. But they're going to have now money in their account. So when they start as freshmen, we're doing all the Buckeye and Chasslet kids. And I reached out to Rocky Point and Stanford students who are coming to our schools to like bring their students, but they have to be. But it's going to be fun. Our ASB is hosting that tomorrow night from 6:30 to 8. So it'll be good. Also, um we have Wasp this next week. So, please don't reach out, but uh Wasp will be there from they come Sunday evening and then they leave Wednesday.
But that will be a nice way to segue into like really our end of the year items are starting because next Wednesday we have our spring concert and last last uh concert Janette had ste so she's bringing back the music program and I really appreciate that. We have a good plan for this next year. We look forward to the end of the year craziness. >> That's what I'm doing. You just got to roll with it. >> I just want to thank everybody to the Buckeye Learning Walk. We really enjoyed having everybody there and I know my kindergarten kids were excited and especially the greeters were excited to meet and greet everybody. And then we have Buckeye's last element house on next Thursday, April 23rd from 5:30 to 6. I'm want to thank you Rob for
the learning awesome job at all the sites. We're really lucky to have for us very well. Thank you. Item 16. This is a board policy as option revision and this is the first reading. This is the discussion of action regarding California school boards association CSBA February 2026 policy updates. As I understand this is first reading a chance to go over some of the information there's anything deal. Yes, I believe our next board meeting is May 20th. So, if we could have any questions about board policies end by let's say Thursday, May 14th, that would give us some time to be able to do that. That's almost a week before. So, Thursday, May 14th, there were any questions you need to call, we can get you in touch with the appropriate director and we can get
those questions answered. policy also has a piece on it suggesting that paid actually let's retract my last >> I'll put that in a minute board meeting open up the special board Would you like just introd? >> Yes sir. >> Okay. The public hearing regarding proposal for implementing school facility fees authorized by the education code 17620 and government code section 65995. It seems like it came back awfully quick, but as I was reminded, we were a little tardy the last time. They're supposed to come up every two years. And uh because maybe not the right word, but we were late doing it so that actually the two years has come around and there's going to be I do not know what the incremental rate increase is. I asked that question, but I have Not sure that
I've seen it. It's usually matter. >> So the residential fees going up and commercial >> that makes 538 per square foot on residential and 87. >> Yes. There's no vote. >> All right. Any comments from public discussion 604 back to 19 is consideration of public notice that district's initial proposal California school CSA gateway chapter 696 regarding the classified unit. It's just our openers and the first item there proposal and so we just have to do this formally. >> Number two is consider school employ has their proposed information. Okay, moving on to human resources discussion and action to approve the district athletic. >> Yes. So, we have a good position. I don't know if Tina wants to speak on it at all, but um we are looking to put in place a district athletic director position,
one that can oversee the entire athletic program from middle school, especially with our reconfiguration to have a a middle school that's now a 58 potentially going up to the bigger league as well. um the demands of that job are significant and it's an area where for no fault of anyone. It's just difficult to get everything done. And one of the big advantages of being a K12 district is that we're able to kind of control our own path and we work with all our own theater schools, networking schools, and this would be a way for us to really bolster athletic program. Uh the data is strong and that kids who participate in extracurricular athletics attend school more uh they do better in school. Um it is a huge piece of the culture of all of our
sites and it's an area that I think we have a lot of pro opportunity to be able to retain certain students that can take advantage of the excellent facilities. The problem is there's just not a lot of hours in the day to make that happen.
