001good afternoon everyone i call the gcc board meeting to order august the 10th 2021 at 4 45. welcome everyone uh roll call i'm sorry i was in my computer mr anderson mark anderson harry block is on his way we will acknowledge when he gets in bruce mandrake here jack turner president lily campbell present all board members are four board members present and accounted for thank you and now to staff thank you so very much dr peterson mr sample dr mccormick this omaya all of you and i apologize if i did not quite say that correctly so welcome thank you for being here at our board meeting do we have public comments for today uh yes madam president we have uh one public comment mr sergey tarakov all right good afternoon your gcc board um cabinet

002and dr peterson i'd like to share some wonderful information with you since there is an agenda not an agenda and we just received this from the press today uh we'd like to um i would like to report that our superintendent dr cindy peterson was featured in the russian time magazine and the rubric women in power and russian time is a full color magazine printed in english by russian american media in this full page article we're seeing the answer it is a full page article we're seeing the answer questions about uniqueness of women's women in leadership challenging aspects and the modern education and shared some wonderful tips for women who dream of pursuing success in both career and family this is a great pr for gcc schools and we certainly wanted to share with you guys

003um and we will scan and email it to you i don't know if you can see it but this is a full page um yeah this is a full page article and that will conclude my comment madam present thank you so oh that is gorgeous that is beautiful thank you so much for that information and congratulations again to dr peterson it seems as if every month we're congratulating her for something she has done outstanding so we really appreciate the information and thank you both and thank you for all the hard work you do in the community we really appreciate you thank you board members any other comments sergey thank you so much for your comments and bringing that information to us dr peterson again thank you for all of your leadership roles any other comments

004thank you hearing none seeing none we will now move into our uh regular board meeting superintendent's update and now dr peterson you've got to talk and now i've got to talk and so um certainly i do want to um express gratitude for mr tarakov who helps provide the opportunities for myself and others to be able to speak to and be recognized by the community and it was my great honor to be able to speak to women and leadership as it always is and i appreciate very much director tarakov sharing that with you today just in terms of the update i've been doing my share of speaking today as a few of you know this morning we had our welcome back event our very amicable friendly fun-loving crew of jason sample and dr mccormick worked the

005audience well and set everything up and just really made it a friendly place to be despite being in zoom where we didn't really wish we were for another year uh but really want to affirm them i want to affirm miss melissa demarco who did work tirelessly um the all the a couple of days before certainly into the night doing things like preparing a safe a couple of safe viewing rooms in the central office because some of you may recognize that while we can do some viewing in small groups we are somewhat limited to how many people can be safely indoors and we're doing our best to protect everyone even though everyone is wearing masks for guidelines so definitely want to affirm melissa for all of her work in supporting the organization and the board also

006want to affirm all of our principals out there administrators who were present and supporting the message and supporting um getting their schools ready at the same time and you know we like to tease that 19 years in we usually get together someplace for a cup of coffee and half a muffin and get some mingling and elbow time and we didn't get to have that exactly but we did really appreciate at least seeing everyone's faces on our zoom screens and again crossing our fingers hoping this is our last welcome back on a zoom screen but i really want to affirm our three board members who were able to make it to our event lily mark and harry were all present for the event and definitely it always matters when board is able to be there we

007understand when you can't but we do want to recognize those that made the ability to come and certainly uh for those of you who weren't there we we watched a little bit of the trolls and had a little bit of music so talked a little bit about finding your joy in difficult times uh and uh of course you'll get to have some of that when you have your retreat because you know i always bring it back so also we want to recognize that you see on your screen today our newest cabinet member miss omayra raina she has transitioned fully into her role as our new chief business official we want to welcome her officially we've uh welcomed her a few times but officially fully she is here yesterday was aaron thornsberry's last day we did

008both his team on friday and the cabinet team yesterday spent some time recognizing him and um you know giving him um celebrations and suddenly celebrating with him for his new role that he is so excited about uh we also want to update you just a tiny bit about coveting we'll hear about that later we have been watching the sacramento county and yolo county numbers they are continuing to increase i don't think that will come as a surprise to you there's a lot of ongoing changes even yesterday some ongoing new changes in our guidance i know that will be provided to you in one of your study session items we continue to have conversations with various surrounding superintendents and trying to find out what everyone else is doing and how they're managing it in this times

009of stress really appreciate that between um certainly jason and dr mccormick and i we each kind of have a little different sphere of influence where we are able to um kind of canvas for what's happening out there uh and we also are tracking through such sources as axa of course the access superintendence council both mr sample and dr mccormick are are very involved in the local regional axa and of course are getting information there as well we have moved into this year with universal masking indoors all students all adored all adults on campuses are required to wear masks regardless of their vaccination status and that is our new reality right now up until yesterday outdoors was fully able to be anybody can wear be outside without having to wear a mask and a little slightly

010new wrinkle on that dr mccormick and mr sample will share some more with you in a later budget meeting i'm sorry later um item on the agenda my next item is about the budget trailer bill and the particular portion of it around independent study we are seeing some significant changes we told you about that last time we met and uh dr mccormick and her team in particular have been working with our non-classroom-based principals and others to understand all the new guidelines you're going to get some details on that in a later item as well since we have seen you we have had a two-day retreat with our administrators and it was joyful and connected and very much a hybrid opportunity you may remember we had two days together with them in june we had two

011more days with them since we were last together we spent the first morning together in person fully masked following all guidance and then we spent the afternoon in a zoom experience because we had some outside speakers the next morning we also had some outside speakers so continue to zoom experience and then came back to end the day all together so it was kind of a bit of the best of all worlds and i think it was well received some of our topics were diversity equity and inclusion of course coherence capturing kids hearts trauma informed practices social emotional learning capacity building all of our key things that we've been working on and um also want to let you know that last week i began the aasa national principles supervisor academy just looking for as always more

012best practices to share with the organization so i'll be reporting out at various times about some of those learnings but again a great place to network with people across the united states who are all working with principals and talking about how best to support principals in their work particularly around the subject of instruction also our virtual academy is up and running and marketing and growing i think it's doubled since the last time we spoke uh and uh we're continuing to staff for that and manage that growth our two new part-time directors have started in their roles miss joy to coy in her director of ib schools and mr mori elliott in director of cte cte programs both of them are half time in those roles and half time in their schools as well but they

013are beginning to do their work on the research phase of writing the charters that are under both of their umbrellas mr sample and i had the opportunity to attend the new student orientation at futures high school this last week it was a happening place there were people in sumu wrestling velcro suits and people playing basketball a lot of um a lot of um just fun going on that i could tell anyway probably more than i could take in and really good turnout a lot of good staff energy there a lot of um orientations and tours and interest was gained and definitely want to affirm futures for their hard work in doing that i want to remind you that our board retreat will be august 24th at 8 30 and yes it will still be on

014zoom and we are expecting a full day on the 24th to keep you informed of all the things that you need to know about and weigh in on i want you to know that we had informed you that the budget trailer bill gave all of our current twin rivers charters a two-year extension it's not just for us especially basically it's any charter that would be up during these two years and so we have a two-year extension but we did get official confirmation from twin rivers that they also believe that is the thing so we will not be working on renewals for two more years the most happy person on this screen is mr sample and um really excited tomorrow morning and looking forward to welcoming our students and staff back on our campus for instruction

015first day of school is tomorrow all right and that is my update well thank you so much dr peterson board members any comments any questions comments i was going to save this from to board comments but i do want to congratulate you on the wonderful launch that you did this morning i wasn't sure if i was going to stay all the whole time but i did because it was so invigorating and your comments to staff not only just the staff but to life itself was just very very invigorating now i want to thank you for the work and of course all of the staff members the cabinet who put together the activity for this morning it was very well done but your words of encouragement your words of commitment and jet was just on top

016it was really right where it needed to been so thank you very very much i thoroughly enjoyed it thank you madam president any other comments from anyone regarding the superintendent's update hearing none we will then move into our study session number one ab130 independent study update uh is that okay it's the it's the combo uh most things in the study session are a combo yeah yeah jason uh sample and dr mccormick are quite the team right all right we are on all right good uh evening board president uh members of the board uh dr peterson uh dr mccormick we're uh we went ahead a few slides there we did it's not an in-person learning we're gonna do ab-130 oh uh then uh we got a screen sharing problem so hold on because that's what i

017not what i'm seeing on my end so just a second yeah we're seeing in-person learning okay thing no you didn't that's um a uh the joy of multiple screens but that's fascinating all right because i don't see that so hold on well i will tell you we're so excited to talk about in-person learning at some point tonight that we wanted to jump to it or at least our computers are thinking uh that way yeah maybe that's it okay let's try this again and see if both of our planets align um i'm gonna have to close that see this is the joy of technology there we go i was a little worried about both of the planets because i thought we were all on the same planet sometimes we're not because my screen sharing was showing

018uh independent study but you that's not what you guys told me we're seeing so all right we're good now yes we're seeing it now jumped in i don't want to talk about planets all right uh again dr mccormick and myself want to just take a few minutes to update you regarding of the uh independent study changes on ab130 at our last board meeting uh aaron uh thornsberry and elmira reyna they both gave a very comprehensive look at what the trailer bill kind of produced in terms of uh the fiscal site but today we want to talk a little bit about the program so next slide so i just want to kick off by giving you a little bit of the legislative uh kind of story behind uh how we got to where we got to

019this section of uh the trailer bill as some of you may remember somewhere around the middle of last school year i shared with you about a bill that we were tracking uh a b 1316 which was a bill introduced by assembly member o'donnell who is the chair of the assembly education committee o'donnell coincidentally also was the author of ab 1505 and 1507 which were bills that were signed into law by the governor this bill ab1316 really focused on independent study non-classroom based schools with a number of what i call sweeping changes uh that was uh seemed to kind of happen and what was being requested uh during the last day of the session the bill was moved to the suspense file and was actually presumed dead i will tell you i remember when we had

020the board meeting and we had shared where the bill uh had died and dr peterson said you know it's dead for now but we'll see what happens so as we moved and we continued to watch various pieces of this legislation we did see as kind of thought some of the language did show up within the trailer build and we feel that was a deal that was kind of struck between the author the governor and the other members of the legislature to say we're going to kill this bill for now but some of the salient points will show up later so ab-113 excuse me ab-130 our budget trailer bill really took some of the aspects of 1316 particularly around independent study none classroom based i want to note that i think one of the most interesting

021things that i've heard from the legislator from the legislative atmos office and everyone is that there is still significant bill cleanup uh that is ongoing and that's not out of the norm but one of the things that they have all continued to say was what was the legislative intent of the bill and you'll hear dr mccormick share some of that as she begins to walk through some of the parts of uh the bill and actually a future policy so with that being said dr mccormack all right um so i wanted to start with some of the new rules as we call it that we had to put in place prior to tomorrow our first day of instruction so these were some significant changes to our non-classroom-based programs and the removal of the option to do

022distance learning has sort of driven this new sort of intent so there are elements of this that are very reminiscent of what our classroom based programs did under a distance learning model and when jason talked about what was the legislative intent i think those are the important pieces that the legislature wanted to see happen in anyone that didn't want to return to full in-person instruction is that they took those additional components that were added to classroom based programs and now put them under the independent study sort of umbrella of requirements so the first piece that was in addition is there is now a requirement to have a parent-teacher conference prior to a family signing their written agreement or their master agreement this is one of those legislative intent items the underlying story that we keep

023hearing that we think will get cleaned up is this is only if a parent calls for it the intent was not that we made every family sit through a parent teacher conference prior to having a written agreement signed if a parent comes and wants to enroll in independent study at least from our perspective we figured they knew what sort of what they were coming into and as part of that master agreement process we talk about details so we'll see if that cleans up but our schools all do orientations which we feel really help to meet that requirement each lea is going to have to define what satisfactory educational progress is they have bullet pointed many of those elements and when you see the policy changes you'll see those defined for you included in that and

024sort of integrated into that is this tiered re-engagement strategy you may or may not recall in the many plans that we presented last year this was a term that we saw in those plans how were you going to ensure that students and families stayed engaged so they've moved that in language into the independent study requirements and each school will have to outline their plan if a student is not intending excuse me attending some of the required elements which i'm going to talk about next then what are those next steps that will also be delineated in policy so the pieces that are very reminiscent of what we saw in the last year that are carrying through are these student interaction and instruction requirements so what the legislature did is they actually broke it down by grade

025band which i shared here so our tk to grade three will need to have daily synchronous instructions so they will have daily interaction with um a teacher a teacher of record okay so providing instruction to them four through eight they have to have that weekly synchronous instruction so that's a minimum okay that they'll see live interaction with their teacher of record but then they also need to have daily live interaction that can be the teacher a paraprofessional someone from the office staff a school counselor it's it's very broad as to who can provide that but the intent is to check in with our fourth through eighth graders every day and their families to make sure they're making um progress or to find out if we need to provide supports and then with grades 9 through

02612 their requirement is at least weekly synchronous instruction with their teacher of records so they're having some type of live interaction with that teacher at least once a week we have to document what that interaction looks like and how they're recording that that is also a requirement that carried over from last year that our classroom-based programs were using our high school programs have to provide access to courses required for graduation and approved by uc or csu is a through g there are several of these pieces we already had in place so they're not new to us but they may be new to programs outside of the gcc this element about transitioning back to traditional seat based settings again not as impactful to us in an independent study environment we our requirement is to help a

027parent get support to return to a seat brace program in their district or they could go to a seat based program within the gcc but for our district partners this could be very impactful because they're moving in and out of independent study and classroom based programs in a district environment that could be a lot more complicated so we're glad that's not as complicated for us in that aspect electronic signatures it just it that delineated an education code um as a sort of an outcome of the pandemic needing to make sure that that was very clear that that was okay from the audit perspective and then finally this bi-weekly reporting i shared that with you last time in our in-person update that is sort of the additional part of the ab-86 reporting that's carried forward we

028now report how many of our students are participating in independent study and how many are participating in in-person learning in a classroom-based setting all of those new elements need to be amended and added to our policy and to our master agreements executive committee we had a policy on the agenda that we were going to present to you tonight but as dr peterson and jason and i began to continue to comb all the different resources because this came in so quickly and then the concern about the changes with legislative intent and cleanup language we elected to pull that policy we will need to bring it to you during your board retreat on the 24th because we do have a timeline that we have 30 days to get that policy and those new master agreements codified and

029so that we can move forward but wanted to let you know we we did pull back just to make sure that we had all the right pieces and parts and elements in those policies based on the resources that are coming at us very quickly and that was a large 40 000 foot view of the new things with independent studies so jason and i are happy to answer any questions you may have okay thank you board members do i see hands did i see you as bruce any hands or comments on the new study independent study policy are you saying yes both mr block and mr turner have their hand raised madam president okay i do not see mr block okay mr block wherever you are please i'm there oh there you are okay okay yes

030and thank you for being here we acknowledge your presidency i want to know approximately how many students we have in uh in personal learning or independent study yeah independence yeah can i can i can i just i'm sorry dr mccormack can i just say doc mr block school doesn't start till tomorrow so we would only be estimating based on what people have reported so far and it would be probably easier for dr mccormick to tell you who has elected to go to the virtual academy as opposed to who showed up so i'm not quite sure i just wanted to make sure that you understand that anything we say would be projecting because we haven't started school yet okay did you get your answer at this point dr mccormick do you have any of the comments

031on that statement we actually in our um in-person learning update see i wanted to go there so quickly earlier um we are sharing some projected numbers including the virtual academy i think that might answer the question that we'll see later okay very good any other questions or comments thank you board member turner has his hand raised still i'm wondering why i'm having trouble seeing everyone uh mr turner wherever you are yes i my question is how does the state plan to audit all of the requirements they have it seems overwhelming like it doesn't really is the laa going to audit is the state setting up a whole new department to audit this this is this is overwhelming well uh the audit guidelines changed last year with the distance learning that actually include many of the

032elements that we now see in this new independent study requirement but we will actually get the full audit guide it'll probably come closer to january or february but i've already been in communication with our auditors saying you know we had a system last year that you've audited that you seem to be happy with um for some of this tracking um do you think that will help us move forward and they seem from the guidance they have now that they'll be able to audit that so we'll see if we get more information but i i feel we're in a pretty good place because we had a successful sort of system and process with our classroom-based programs last year and that was that was very sweetly said but it is still onerous all that we're asked to

033do jack turner so thank you thank you for acknowledging how much it all is all right not hearing any of the comments or seeing in other hands we will now move on to item two in the study session professional development contracts flipping group and dr peterson will you bring that in um that is actually your same power team there of uh mr sample and dr mccormick i believe isn't it that is correct yeah please tell me it's the right slide deck yes yes it is we're having trouble today all right once again uh good evening board uh we are starting over the course of the next few meetings to walk through uh in more detail some of our contracts and contractors that we work with and the first one that we're starting with tonight is

034a flippant group um you most uh know them as capturing kids hearts uh flipping education and so we're really kind of excited to share some information with you moving to our next slide so i can't talk about the flipping group i can't talk about capturing kids hearts without i mean highlighting first of all that all of our schools are national showcase schools and i will tell you um this is a very prestigious group in that it is nine of over 236 schools in the nation um and it's not just you know the the schools that uh you know 236 is not just the flipping group they work with many more schools over a thousand and we are nine of the 236. coming even further down is our national showcase district i like to and and

035probably will go on a limb here and say they probably created this award for us because uh they were like we have to figure out a way to celebrate uh a system where all of their schools are really implementing with fidelity the uh full ckh model and so i i like to believe in you know send the word back to vernon and jeff thorpe that i said it that they probably created the national showcase district for us so we are uh this year uh one of seven school districts across and we obviously call districts but we're a system across the us uh and last year we were uh one of six so it's a very small prestigious group to be a part of and again i don't need to go deep there you know that

036uh very well next slide so let's talk about the history of how we really came to uh get connected with ckh uh this really and this picture here is uh our first administrator group i will tell you this was september of 2011. we actually had already had our first ckh um kind of convening for sava they started the program in early 2011 but then this group uh led by dr peterson went back to texas i will tell you it was a they were scholarship uh as you know uh dr peters is very frugal and so i think she convinced them to scholarship this entire group really to go why do i bring this picture up because i think it's important to understand that ckh really was driven and started uh by our principals our leaders

037they're the ones that embody they're the ones that experienced this and said this is something that we need uh in our schools and within our system and so this group went back to texas they were trained and i will tell you they came back all fired up ready to to really take this to the next level and um i will tell you it's lived even beyond uh the the careers of some of these that are on the screen and i excited to see where it goes next the next slide so gcc we utilize capturing kids hearts to not only equipped our teachers administrators and classified staff but also our central office and really we look at these key areas are areas of focus cultivating relational capacity improving school culture improving academic performance strengthening trust between

038teachers and students building self-managing classrooms and teams and then ultimately creating accountability and fostering a trauma-informed care and so these are all of the kind of building blocks of capturing kids hearts so now i'm going to throw it to dr mccormick who's going to take us through the activities and some more pieces so looking forward to what the flipping group was going to support the gcc with as we move into the school year we've already checked the box with capturing kids hearts one that is truly the foundation that we try to get as many of our new staff members to have that foundational training and as jason mentioned it's across the board those are new staff in the central office those are new staff on a school campus whether it be a teacher a paraprofessional

039a custodian a site manager an administrator an after-school program coordinator and that foundational training helps us all to have the same language and i think that's the key to the success that the gcc has had around our implementation of ckh is that foundational language we our meetings are run through the excel model there are components that are consistent across every meeting every classroom every school site within the organization that helps to embed and make that part of our culture and we trained 50 new members of the gcc on the 3rd and 4th of august in capturing kids hearts and i can't move forward without affirming the flipping group for their flexibility to deliver content and training in a virtual environment that they had to shift to just as quickly as we had to shift to

040that as part of our instructional model and so we were able to have their support it's not the same as being in person but i was nice to know that we could continue to move our work forward in that virtual model we will also train another 50 fingers crossed in person in january so we do two capturing kids hearts one foundational trainings every year to make sure that we continue to train anyone that's new to the gcc and it's um i i want to acknowledge that as enculturated as capturing kids hearts is within the gcc the fact that the flipping group provides that training to us helps to keep the consistency as i mentioned before of the language so i know often when we look at some of our consulting work that we do and

041and you'll hear this in some of our other presentations we're moving to build a capacity and i will say as i walk through some of these trainings we are building components of capacity but there are elements that we really have to depend on the flipping group to lay the foundation for so that's why we continue to use them for these initial trainings they don't really have a train the trainer model for lack of a better definition we have several schools that are moving into capturing kids hearts too it's it's really the the building block was in one and then we expand that into capturing kids hearts too all of our schools are in different places so for some they're ready for this level others are moving into process champions where they are training site-based staff

042to really support the implementation of ckh within their site so that's really that capacity building component that's continuing to carry that the message support staff that were trained even if they were trained a long time ago maybe help them helping them implement things that may have sort of fallen off their radar or they're struggling with the social contract and the development in their classroom that's what our process champions do some of our schools are ready for a recharge they have staff that have been through ckh1 and 2 and they have a good foundation of processed champions but they now a little bit of a shot in the arm and each of our administrators look at their budgets and look at the in their lcap process how they're building climate and culture and say you know

043what this is the year we need to bring the recharge we need to have that one day we need to have them come back and and pump us up again um ckh premium is brand new this year it's very exciting all of our sites um elected to add ckh premium which is um an sel component that works within uh the ckh model so um they the administrators got their training on that last week and so i'm looking forward to seeing how that's being implemented and then the final component and this is where we get the support of the flipping group and their team is they come and visit us and help us really identify how things are going what they can do to support us and i know each of our administrators really look forward

044to their attraction visit from a member of the seek of the flip and group team i would be remiss if i didn't share that they give more than just that contract on a piece of paper so i'm not going to play this clip but we have and multiple times reached out to the team at flipping group and said would you come speak to our administrators flip flippin um came live to one of our sessions so i don't think um any organization besides ours besides them you know creating that award for us i think they do provide us so many things because they know that we um have really taken ckh to heart for lack of a better term and and so it was great we had vern come in and to our administrators retreat and

045he kicked us off and gave us a a really inspirational moment to help us um sort of kick off that school year and wished us all well and he has an energy and helps us finish strong so um melissa i'm sure could share the clip with you but wanted to just emphasize that they do more than just come in and do trainings with us and then my last connection and this is something we do with our administrative teams every time we meet is we ask our teams to make connections to our um coherence work to our student center learning to our core commitments and our goals and that is part of how this all interconnects for us all of our agreements that we have both internally and externally whether we're providing the training or bringing

046in one of our consultants is helping us to create those coherent systems of support for our students and so we always reflect on that on all of our meetings to make sure that we're continuing to move forward and ckh is very much a part of what those connections are that we make and that is our summary for the flipping group if you have any questions what members anyone uh mr turner and then mr mandrake see yes i really sense your enthusiasm for it and and i appreciate the the more in-depth knowledge of what the flipping group really does and i also appreciate your comment that that you're trying to to build the some sort of program so we could become down the road independent perhaps and and develop our own in you know in-house uh

047program okay bruce thank you jack mr magic yeah i was just curious as how many different um staff people from the flippin group might interact during the course of the year how many how many professionals do they bring to them i'm counting for you in my head so with ckh1 we had four of their specialists that supported us that's pretty typical for a size of 50. um for the premium component they had a i know there was at least one in the training i would say overall in a year we probably interact between 15 and 20 of their professionals uh jason i'm am i going with the number probably about right yeah that's about right in terms of all the trainers and the professionals and the access to the additional materials that we have even

048back uh with their company so yeah it's about 20. well and i think what our staffs appreciate is many of those professionals that we interact with are working leaders in other school districts or our site principles and so i think i know for me when i went through ckh1 it was nice to have our trainer happen to be someone who was a principal and she was able to to share with our group what it looks like on her school site and i think that helps lay some context for um those that are participating any other comments um dr mccormick i want to put you on the spot but were you familiar with uh ckh before you came to gateway and if so if not has it made a difference in how you have looked at

049different aspects of it so i i don't mind being put on the spot because i was familiar with it but i will tell you the organization that i worked for before they did not implement ckh it was something that people went to but it was not part of the culture and you can see the difference absolutely absolutely and i will tell you that part of it is around the social contract and the the use of the social contract is really that norm setting piece um and in my previous organization that is not how that social contract was used it was uh very different i asked that question because in all of my years in education prior to coming to gateway i had not seen ckh i you know i was not exposed to it and

050having gone to the different schools and visited with students and staff i can see where he has made a tremendous tremendous difference with what happens out there in the field so that's why i asked that question if you were in the same situation as i was before and to build on what you just said and what dr mccormick said it's not just the program it's our 100 commitment to the program for as jason has shared with us now 10 years 10 years of a 100 commitment and that's not the people on this screen it certainly is us as well but it's the 100 commitment to implement with fidelity at each of the sites in a way that works for them but that's still with fidelity and i i did want to note that um vice

051president mandrake still had his hand raised uh for another question i believe bruce me andrews just kind of a follow-up as to how you mentioned they working i think with a thousand different schools or school districts i don't remember which one how big is the organization per se i mean do we do we have a feel for how many yeah i don't know maybe jason has some of this but what i will tell you is they have an education arm they have a business arm they have a corporate arm they have an athletic arm they are global uh they're working jason would tell you they're working with his uh famous texas football team yeah and um what else do you know jason about their scope yeah i was gonna just kind of share the same

052thing you just did they have these multiple they have a corporate part that works just with corporate executives they have uh as dr peterson said the athletes and then this part that we mostly engage with is flipping education and i would say just a quick peruse of their website you're probably i think it's about 200 employees that they have uh in that area and that's their trainers that's their uh team so yeah i don't know if they're working with jason's texas football team we may have to reconsider here i know i know no comment any other hands and i appreciate dr peterson you're helping me because i'm not seeing all of the screens it's fine we'll support you i'm not seeing any other hands ma'am and i just want to say that again having been

053with axa and the flipping group is very well known through the organization statewide they are consultants for axer they do so much uh in terms of their speaking and bringing the information so you know we are blessed to have them as part of our learning aspect so anyway thank you so much for that information any other comments any other questions hearing none we will move on to in person learning update we will now be ready for that now we're ready dr mccormick well i'm only hoping that's what you see yes that's what we see all right so we are ready to talk to you about the in-person learning uh update as you can see on your screen that's our deck that we have up next slide so we would just like to kick off with

054just some basic updates in terms of what's happening with covet in our area sacramento and yolo county both are experiencing an increase uh in uh covet 19 cases we have been watching and monitoring that the areas in which our schools are located and that we serve have been noted as some of the highest areas in both counties in terms of new infection rates some of the things that we are working very tirelessly to do is much like everyone else every school district we're experiencing our own level of challenges but i will tell you that we are very confident in our multiple plans and contingencies to really honestly weather the storm uh quite well and we will be strategic and creative and uh everything we're doing but i will tell you the challenges that we're having

055are unlike and very similar to what every other uh dis school entity across the state and i would actually venture to say across the nation is experiencing right now uh one such thing was the cdc put out a masking kind of recommendation and then cdph said something very different and then sac county said something very different but we're arrested is that masking will be required for all k-12 schools and we have shared that information with our families and with our community so that they understand we're working tirelessly to have increased outreach efforts to all of our communities and families about not only the work that we're doing but uh the work that's happening in the global sense uh and then in an effort to do that august the 19th and september the 9th we have

056partnered uh with the del paso heights medical clinic as well as twin rivers unified and sac county to host a vaccination clinic for our community it will be hosted at futures high school where we'll be giving we'll be giving the pfizer uh vaccine on the first shot on the 19th of august and the second shot on the 9th of september and again these are just kind of ways that we're trying to show that we're also a community leader we've already been in talk director tarakov has been in talk with the county to look at other locations that we can also host a vaccination clinic uh so that as we educate our community as we show them that we are concerned about their health and well-being it also impacts our school tonight you have as a

057review item informational item our coven 19 in-person learning plan this item is given to you uh just to as part of our requirements is to provide that to the board uh and this is the plan that we have that's ongoing updating it's been shared with our administrators as well as parents uh so that as we move into this new school year we are ready uh to hit the ground running and to keep our family staff and community healthy and safe all right dr mccormick as dr peterson shared earlier we start school tomorrow um you have seen these enrollment projections with the exception of the virtual academy i include it here because since we gave you the update that melissa shared with you earlier we have moved to 80 students and they and that has our

058i listened earlier and many times today to our phone ringing in the front of the gcc and that is a lot of the questions that are coming in so we're definitely starting to feel families and many of the calls are not families that are currently with the gcc they are coming because they need a learning alternative and we happen to have that solution for them so i think we'll continue to see those numbers move we look forward to starting school tomorrow and getting all of our learners back on campus and um we'll see how we continue to to go as we bring our our new covert world into school but i will tell you and i want to share these photos with you we are excited to see students and teachers back lots of different

059photos on facebook about professional learning with masks a little teeny picture of the climbing wall that futures and then more importantly our administrative team photo which we missed last year but we were able to get together and then down the lower corner is our campus principal at cccsk8 getting ready for families to come by and pick up school supplies so um there is excitement brewing and i know i am looking forward to being on campuses and seeing kids when we start to bring them back tomorrow and that is our um in-person learning update and looking forward to next time we talk to you really being able to uh talk about how many little smiling faces we get to see in person any comments do i see any hands being none thank you dr mccormick and

064we're going to have to have a slide for who's been here for 20 years and i thought oh oh my goodness i can't believe we're saying that so just wanted to affirm that and again i i want to be sure that it's clear i am very blessed that this team um does all the hard work and then just lets me have my moment of fame in front of the camera because certainly this was uh really the brainchild heart child of of jason christine and melissa they they were the the ones slaving over everything that you gave affirmations for so definitely want to be sure that you know that and our theme for this year is courage commitment that i miss one curiosity curiosity that's it okay we're gonna be yeah we're going to be curious

065we're going to be courageous and we're going to be committed as we rise that is correct and we will still be brave that's right always being brave always being brave yes that is correct so thank you again everyone for all of the efforts and your hard work getting things ready and i know tomorrow will be an exciting day for all of the students and the parents coming back so and with that we are now going into code session employee performance evaluation superintendents government code section and we will be returning after we meet so mr jason can you put us in mr marco if you will close the breakout room i don't have that ability for some reason i got kicked off if for some reason i wouldn't it wouldn't let me back in the other
