018and the first thing that we're going to hear from is Mrs Luellen and the cinamon and special education program all right and uh as they're transitioning in um Mrs Lin has brought a a a large team with her if any members of the board there will be some visuals so any members of the board would re like to relocate uh out into the public now would be a great time to do that um this presentation has been uh in the workers for a couple of months it was uh asked at the request of several members of our board to uh get a little better understanding about uh the relationship between our child study team and our special education program and Mrs lellan is here to uh talk about all the the many things that are

019going on um in her world so Mr lellan if you would uh the floor is yours I'm going to relocate everyone else is good all right good evening uh members of the board uh members of the audience who joined us this evening thank you so much for giving this this us this opportunity to uh share with you uh information regarding our district special education program and child study team um so what we're going to do is walk you through the process of what happens when a student is identified as having a struggle whether it's uh academic behavioral social emotional or medical um we're going to share that process the services that are uh that we offer the different programs of data services and take you through that entire process up to including graduation um and

020then at and we will close our program sharing some of the initiatives and programs that we've had um the child study team and special education programs have developed over the last couple years so I'll start off by sharing with you uh our child study team so our child study team is here so first I'd like to apologize if you thought this was going to be a quick board meeting uh we're going to take up a little bit of your time but we do have a lot of information to share so first I'd like to share with you a little bit about child study team our child study team is broken up essentially into two teams we have a um Elementary team which is preschool through grades five and then we have a secondary team which

021is grades 6 through 12 or the age of 21 if a child is staying uh until 21 so let me quickly introduce you so we we will do this one time uh in our elementary team just give a little we when I uh we have Christy Danto Angela Jack Alyssa mebs and Gabby roach they're our elementary team and in our secondary team we have Michelle montros Jesus Powers Joe Sigman and Jen Alexander uh our supervisor special services Bethany Sanders so they're all going to take a part in this presentation as well also in the district uh in our child study team who's not with us this evening we have two behavioral analysts U Miss montagano and uh Miss uh zami we also have six speech therapists that are uh employed through the district uh six

022years ago five years ago there were only four so we keep growing um also who is not who we contract out are uh occupational therapist speech therapists social skills teacher uh teacher of the visually impaired teacher def heart of hearing as well so with that I'm going to turn it over we're going to take a couple slides at a time and go through the presentation so hi so what happens when a teacher or a parent has a concern about a student uh the first thing is uh communication needs to happen between the parents and the teacher that's the first line of communication uh once they have established the concerns if there's need for uh further uh need for address uh the can can't either the teacher or the parents can contact the counselor and the

023counselor can refer the student to the inrs team which is the intervention and referral services team and on this next slide uh it's an overview of the three tiers of interventions where tier one known as our Universal supports are delivered to the entire population our tier 2 interventions are targeted they are uh received to small groups and then our tier three are our most intensive interventions uh that we have so inrs what is inrs inrs is the intervention and referral services committee it's made up of a group of Educators professional Educators um that come together to come up with strategies to help students who are at risk this group consists of Administrators teachers counselors and child study team members any staff can can refer any staff or parent can refer a student to inrs for

024concerns that can be academic they can be medical they can be social or behavioral so what the inrs team does is they come together they assess data that has been taken discuss the concerns of whatever brought them to us and we come up with an action plan so the action plan is something that is implemented in the classroom this is not not a 504 this is not an IEP the team then will come together and monitor the progress that the students are making if they're making progress if they're not making progress if they are not and the strategies are not effective then they're referred to the 504 committee or the child study team so what is a 504 plan a 504 plan I'm sorry a 504 let's establish what a 504 plan 504 is a

025504 actually is a civil rights law that helps persons with disabilities um what is a person with a disability right a person with a disability is something that hinders that person's ability to um you know have perform an activity so um such as walking talking hearing seeing and even learning um the goal really here is just to ensure that all students have equal access to education in the schools so how is a 504 provided um how does this provided by a 504 equal access is provided by allowing changes to the learning environment within a classroom um who becomes eligible for a 504 a student whose disability interferes with the students ability to learn within a general education setting um students may be eligible for a 504 but not necessarily an IEP um 504s are reviewed

026and they're updated annually just like an IEP is well as it was previously mentioned we had the IR and which is the intervention Referral Services committee as well as the 504 committees when they look at identifying interventions strategies to help students that are exhibiting academic difficulties um that's typically what happens before a referral is made to the child study team um so with the data that's collected and reviewed by these uh different committees they try to determine the effectiveness of those interventions and strategies depending on how the students responds to that if they feel they are doing well enough they'll continue if for some reason that uh it's not adequately addressing their educational needs then uh what typically happens is those uh committees will make a referral to the child study team um if also

027if there's a concern that the student may be susp suspected of having a disability then that too would be a reason for a referral for child study team and with that said the child study team referral pretty much is a written request uh given to the school district pretty much when again suspecting there's a disability and if a student requires special education related Services a parent School Personnel uh agencies concerned with the child's welfare which in the state of New Jersey is dcpm which is known as the division of Children protection and permanency is an organization that tends to make referrals to the child study team when they're involved with their students um we also have uh up to 20 days once we do receive a written request from U an outside referral regarding to

028the needs and concerns of the student that's identified U because there May again concern of suspicion that the student has a disability um and with that said within that 20 days we'll meet we'll review the information concerns uh we'll look at determining if there's a need to do any uh types of evaluations if there is then we talk about what types of evaluations to proceed with the process and if not then we talk about recommendations going forward as well and so what does that mean once we proceed with the process with the referral how are decisions made about students with special education needs well as I mentioned earlier when you have the first meeting which is identification meeting within 20 days we look again reviewing the reasons for the concerns uh what interventions have been

029uh provided or attempted um if the det termination based on that information warrants further evaluations then we decide what type of evaluations that would be considered to collect additional data whether it's a learning assessment social assessment psychological speech there's a variety of of uh evaluations that are considered depending on what areas are concerned at the time of the meeting um again all this information is used to make a determination of students eligible for speech and excuse me for special education related Services now with that process once that information is collected and and a team reconvenes to review that information then we look at making a determination if the student is eligible for special education related Services based on one of the 14 uh categories that are available and outline in the New Jersey's Administrative Code

030special education uh so there's criteria that's specific to those areas and that's what team would look at and make an determination based on that criteria listed uh with that said if a determination is made that student fulfills one or more of those uh conditions or disabilities then we move forward towards developing a individual education program which outlines the specific services and related services that the student will need in order to be successful in school and it also will kind of outline the terms of their placement um with the process going forward once the student is involved with an IEP which is again the individualized education program every three years the team does reconvene to kind of review how the students performing making sure that their needs are being met and at that time we also

031look at Mak a determination if any additional uh information is warranted or evaluations which would involve the reevaluation process thank you [Applause] now in terms of Eligibility the determination of eligibility for special education related Services is a three-pronged process uh one of which is the student must have a disability according to one of the classification categories as Mr Paris just mentioned there are several different categories different classification categories can involve things like specific learning disability emotional regulation impairment communication impairment Orthopedic impairment uh visual impairments uh other health impair for medical condition there are several uh second a a student must have a need for special education and related services and third it must adversely affect their educational performance and adversely affect means uh preventing success in their academic uh program all right so what is

032an evaluation an evaluation is the process we use to determine eligibility an evaluation will include interviews with the teacher the parent the student observations and standardized testing and for an initial evaluation you must have at least two child study team members present as well as a minimum of two assessments completed for eligibility and it must be completed by a person who has the proper certification or license can outside evaluation be considered yes of course they can as long as they've been completed within the year child study team will review the evaluation presented to us as long um we have to have the proper certification to review it and if we feel that it has enough information we can accept it and utilize it in our process what is an IEP an IEP stands for individualized

033education program an individualized education program is a legally bind in document it's developed by a team of teachers School District Representatives members of the students family sometimes the student when they're of age um the IEP is a written plan that includes the students program it has related Services if needed um it has the students uh present levels it has their needs it has measurable goals and short-term um benchmarks and objectives least restrictive environment what is least restrictive environment it's not a place it's a principle that guides a child's educational program the least restrictive environment for every student may look different because every child is unique to the maximum extent appropriate children with disabilities are educated with children who are not disabled so the goal of every CH student is to be educated in the general

034education class there's a this is a levels that are offered but the ultimate goal is general education the next level is inclusion this is our C- teing model the next level is resource room so students may be in an inclusion setting or general education setting but they may need for different subjects uh support in those settings that is the resource room setting the next level is self-contain and this is taught by a special education teacher with special education students the next level is a separate school and then the last level is residential parent rights and special education parent rights include things such as having a copy of their students IEP their child's IEP being able to bring interpreters to the meeting being able to bring translators to a meeting um having uh translators come with

035no cost uh having extended school year services uh considered by the students IEP meeting uh being able to record IEP meetings as long as they notify the other party ahead of time and they can bring others to the meetings now in terms of the parental uh parent rights and special education booklet uh that's the prize booklet and it's kind of like a cliffnotes version of the special education code it provides a lot of use useful information that can be provided when a parent asks for it provided annually and can be provided at initial evaluations excellent and this is a culminating overview of everything that you had heard where you can see the different models uh the gray Circle represents uh interventions for all students in District the blue circle Specializes for students with impairments and

036then moving to students who require significant support through 504 plans uh and then to students needing specialized instruction through IEPs okay our next set of slides are going to highlight some just a few of our programs and our projects that have imple been implemented throughout the district so starting with our child study team monthly awareness initiative every month the child study team focuses on a different disability with the goal to bring awareness to our special needs Community um teachers plan activities in their classrooms they read books posters are displayed in each building and bulletin boards are creative created you can see that we start the year with dyslexia Awareness Month in October and we end with better speech and hearing Month in May this slide shows some of the projects that have been done by

037students in schools some of the posters that have been displayed and some of the bulletin boards that have been created by students and staff so the next part of this presentation we'll talk about the growth in special education uh as we're fully aware the growth in the district District uh over the last several years we've had tremendous growth in the district um if you could focus on the pink columns or the red columns uh if compared uh 201819 to our current year 2023 24 and in the four columns they were the rose for comms is the district-wide 504 students that we Service uh district-wide special education students uh and without a speech only goal because there are IEP there are students who have a speech only IEP uh the third column is adding in the

038speech only IEPs and then the fourth column represents the district enrollment uh for each one of our October reports so if you can notice in the far right column 201819 we had almost 2600 students and then today we are at almost 2900 students which is a growth of I believe that's 133% um and if you slide back over two comps of special ed uh we are at 295 in 201819 up to to 431 students that were servicing which is a growth of 46% in special education and obviously we've had covid years in there and there are more students who are needed Services we see that same growth with uh 504 students and that same growth in our speech only as well so I just want to bring that to your attention the number of students

039that are district dis servicing uh and with that comes the first place that we are growing is speci is our preschool so uh a little background information for preschool so uh students are referred or preschoolers are referred to the child study team 110 days before their third birthday uh they start if they're eligible on their third birthday very different than a normal kindergarten enrollment where they start the beginning of the school year we have rolling enrollment all year long with our preschoolers and the program continues to build back in 2017 we had one preschool with disabilities class that Service 13 students and one half day integrated preschool school classroom with 15 students uh today we have two and a half preschool at disabilities classroom servicing 24 students and 10 more that will continue to come

040throughout the school year um and we had two ha we have two half day uh preschool uh integrated preschool classrooms that service 31 students and that's today and we continue to grow and then those numbers get those those children get older and continue to grow throughout our program uh so back in uh 20 21 uh we grew out of New Albany and uh we moved over to Memorial School uh so we have a brand new classrooms in Memorial uh they had to be R Reven renovated sorry uh we had five classrooms and two offices that are now converted to four classrooms uh large 900t classrooms with uh uh restrooms inside for the children a new playground um brightly colored beautiful floors and and the kids just love it now I'm going to talk about the

041Pirates and Pages program uh this is very special to me I created this program with uh Julia zami a behavior analyst in the district and this program started in April of 2022 and we started it at New Albany school um in second grade um the program the goal of this program was to strengthen the literacy skills uh with special reading companions which is a dog and we started with Lily and now in the district we have three dogs and uh we have a dog that visits the middle school and high school in the wellness center and um now we're going to be expanding to rush uh hopefully as soon as January starts we since we have so three dogs uh Remy Lily and Roxy uh getting another dog it was a little hard but we're

042going to be expanding the program the dog comes and the students read to them they write to the dogs and this program is really just built confident readers and the students just really love love the having the dogs come to the classroom and it's just been a real joy to have so I've been really excited to have this programs take off so so as part of our life skills program at the high school we do have a career to work experience program um our ninth and 10th grade students um get to job sample on campus sort of in the high school building sorting mail working in the cafeteria things like that and then um our 11th and 12th grade students get to work in the community um by 12th grade before they leave us we

043do like to try to um tailor their job to their ability level as well as their preferences so you can see some logos here um that represent the different job placements that our students have had both past and present um again you have to be in at least 11th grade to start out in the community um and some students do stay until they're 21 and so for those students um they will continue in the work program as well um they do go out to work four days a week um on Wednesdays they have a um community- based instruction trip that they go on we could try to go on different trips every week and more importantly they are assigned a job coach when they go out to their job sites so that somebody is there

044to assist them um the goal is to naturally Fade Out that job coach when they are able to do the job independently last but not least we have play unified so at the high school we do have play unified um Sports and it is a great opportunity for students both with and without special needs to unite together as a team um we have soccer in the fall basketball in the winter and track in the spring um there are several other local high schools who uh participate in the UniFi program that we get to play against and it's just a really great program I've assisted um with the track and the soccer in the past and I just absolutely love watching these kids come together they have so much fun and that's the most important thing

045so as I uh said in the beginning we would wrap this up at graduation and this is our ultimate goal um our students our ultimate goal is to have them graduate and become independent Learners lifelong independent Learners our students graduate go to fouryear schools twoyear schools trade schools uh be gainfully employed in the Working World uh we offer them Services if uh through DDD DVRs and as you can see here uh we have our graduates from last year um the P the two picks on the left and the right are from our life skills graduation party uh which was the entire library at the high school fill with parents families and friends of our students who graduated from our program um our students stay until the end of 12th grade or uh if necessary if

046if needed they stay until they're a age of 21 so with that thank you very much for your time I hope you we were able to uh shed some light on special education in our district and some of the great programs that we have to offer for our children uh any questions from the board no was a fantastic presentation thank you thank you very [Applause] much okay now we have some uh recognition from the Board of Education Mr cello oh I need that computer back okay sorry they ran off with my computer um for those of you who have been to our board board meetings in the past uh you may recall that during the June meeting uh it's our largest board meeting of the Year lots of people lots of students and uh special

047shout out to all of our students who are hanging this long I know this has been a a long meeting as well but um one of the things we love to do most as a board is to recognize the students and staff who do things of exception here in cinamon and this evening we've got some fantastic people to recognize uh and in order to get this started I'd like to welcome our first group of presenters so uh from cinnamons and High School Mr Gorman if you would be so kind as to join me up here and our our slides are back the floor is slides oh need to get to the mic I was looking for the mic hi everybody it is my privilege this evening to announce the cinemat and high school exemplary educator

048Miss Kate lasowski if Miss lasowski wants to join us up here while I brag about it for a minute congratulations thank you as I think about an Exemplar educator for me it's someone who I know I can put in any classroom at any level uh from remedial to AP and they will be equally effective and provide for those students uh an unparalleled experience and and uh I think that that is something that Mrs leowski is particularly Adept at uh every single kid in her room uh will get it individualized and and and rewarding experience in English literature uh that they will remember forever right I think one of the things that uh an English class does is give us some of those things that Bond us together together as a as a people After High

049School right we've all read a similar set of books we've all had a similar set of experiences and we get to reflect on them as we get older and I think that that's something that our students bring from M Laskowski class uh for the rest of their life in addition to that really exceptional English experience uh Miss Laskowski runs our National Honor Society she runs our poetry out loud uh and I think really one of the things that I'm most thankful for is the work that she's done in bringing to cinemon high school our African-American literature course uh I think that class in particular has provided a home for students in our school that didn't exist before the work that Miss Laskowski has done to to make that a reality uh I personally am incredibly

050thankful for that effort and for the impact that has had on our students lives and I would like to give her one more round of applause congratul this evening we're GNA grab a pict Mrs Fitzwater is going to join us me put my phone away you do work in a high school phones are out us yeah fair enough fa enough all right now I'd like to welcome uh Mrs melter from cinnamon in Middle School who also has a presentation to give thank you Mr Capello good evening everybody it is my pleasure to invite Mr will Welter to the front to be recognized undoubtedly I think when you speak to any educator we all enter this profession with a really deep hope to be a differen maker and on the tough days we sometimes find ourselves

051questioning if what we're doing is working is what we set out to achieve with our students becoming a becoming a reality and when it comes to Mr will Welter I can tell you that the answer is an emphatic yes whether I talked to a student this morning who was in Mr Welcher's class or somebody who was in the room years ago the consistent message is that Mr Welter is somebody who stands out to his students he is truly a Difference Maker not only as an engaging and caring educator but in the school community and Mr Welter has dedicated years and years of service to student athletes he has coached basketball softball even dabbled in a little bit of soccer and in addition he has also taken on a leadership role amongst the faculty um in

052particular he has really been somebody I can count on to spearhead our building's commitment to making cinnamon in Middle School a more Equitable and inclusive environment for students and staff alike and on top of that he is also somebody who has served as a professional mentor to student teachers over the years as well as first year Educators Mr Welter at the end of the day is just the kind of person who is always somebody you can count on to be a calming presence for myself included and he is a solution focused individual I think any room he walks into is usually hallmarked with his everpresent smile and the we've got this can do kind of attitude that any administrator would love to have in their building um and lastly he is just truly a beloved

053teacher so it is my distinct honor tonight to recognize him as a New Jersey exemplary educator in secondary [Applause] education don't go too far Mrs fitre at this time I'd like to welcome Miss Carrie D Simone who's going to do a presentation for us from uh from her building okay okay thank you hi everyone welcome thank you so much for coming out thank you to 70 for coming out to support your fellow Scout and uh I am greatly greatly appreciative of Mitchell delesio uh a high school senior here at cinon who chose our school great thankfully uh to do his Eagle scalp project about a year ago January 5th I received an email from Mitchell asking if I would be interested in having him come over talk to me about some ideas for a an

054Eagle Scout project um he remembered Rush school he remembered our ecology club and their uh beautiful Greenhouse that they had out back as well as their garden beds that they had built and he also noticed that over the years they've uh fallen into some disarray the tornadoes did not help with the greenhouse so he uh asked if he would be able to put those uh together again bring us uh some new new uh garden beds some new thank you uh and build a new Greenhouse for us so he set out a plan and I think that the reason you know that he was so interested in this at least what he had shared with me is that recently um over the past few years he's grown a love grown a love of gardening of of

055plants growing and caring for plants particularly rare and exotic orchids yes mhm and uh he wanted to you know give back something where perhaps there were other students who had a similar love and he wanted to share that with those students um and make sure that our ecology club and our our students for science class would have somewhere where they could go and and participate in gardening taking care of plants and possibly you know finding that similar love so he put a plan together he raised all of the funds uh to over the past year and on November 12th his plan finally came to fruition uh he with a a group of volunteers fellow Scouts and parents um who came out to to support him and to help with his build they came together at

056the back of Rush school and they put together this gorgeous Greenhouse they they replenished our beds they fixed the ones that existed already and they also buil built new raised beds for our students to enjoy come spring we think right yeah the the plants now weren't lasting too long but it went really well because at this time we're also we have a few hydroponic Gardens um that we are starting in the building so our science some of our fourth grade science classes have now taken their seedlings out to the greenhouse they are waiting for them to be ready to be placed into the hydroponic garden so it was perfect timing uh Mitchell is following the footsteps of another uh troop 70 Eagle Scout who came and did an outdoor classroom for us a few years

057back Ryland Ross also a cinnamon high school student uh graduated now but we are extremely grateful to for your efforts uh the care you took the thoughtfulness and just getting everyone else involved with you it was a a very much job well done so thank you Mitchell M yes thank you thank you Mitchell for your services and I appreciate uh your tro fellow troop members coming out and supporting you here this evening and uh for some of the younger crowd I could tell you there are a number of additional projects in the district that we are happy to have you give us a hand with it's funny we were in a meeting yesterday and there was talk of a new sign somewhere and someone said how about an Eagle Scout project so it's a whole

058pathway of volunteerism waiting you uh at this point we do have a couple more uh present presentations and uh I applaud the Young Folks for uh sticking it out so long this evening uh particularly for these next two presentations um as we're going to be recognizing some of our board members for their community service and service um to this board of education uh the first person I'd like to call up is Miss Katie Quinn Katie is in the back and ironically um as Katie comes up here I'm going to go uh handheld uh the two folks who were honoring tonight are probably the two folks who want to be honored less than anyone uh however uh they're going to stand here gracefully while I share some uh remarks about them and our principles are such

059wonderful speakers so uh unfortunately uh hopefully I can do the same amount of justice as they have done for our students so uh Kathleen Katy Quinn is a longtime member of our cinamon and Community as an active parent she served as a confidant to previous superintendent salvator luzy putting information back from her side of the community along the riverfront as a career educator Miss Quinn is a deep passion for improving the lives of students and staff members she began her teaching career the America Corp in North Philadelphia serving as a volunteer student teacher at Thomas Edison school her first teaching job took her to esparanza Academy Charter School where she built connections to students and families with needs that extended beyond the classroom her next stop took her across the river to Freehold Regional High

060School District where she taught English for 20 years in addition to taking on all the tall tasks of getting high school students to share her passion for literature Miss Quinn also took on the challenge of public education from the labor side engaging with her role with an njaa local affiliate as a staunch advocate for students and Educators in the Ocean County region Miss Quinn directed her passion to her hometown schools and sought an elected position on the board of education in the fall of 2017 she was sworn in for her first term of service in January 2018 and upon entering service she joined the curriculum committee and the Student Activities Committee excuse me the curriculum Student Activities Committee along with the policy and legislation committee where she would ultimately later serve as committee chairperson Miss

061Quinn served for six years on the sentiment and Board of Education in what can unarguably be considered the most challenging years in public education in March of two of 2020 our school systems turned upside down and the Board of Education was presented with the Dubious Task of reopening schools after a prolonged shutdown one of our own members of the cinamon Education Association and this is her quote as a board member Miss Quinn demonstrated a dedication to The Human Side of Education along with her colleagues she let it be known that she was there for all of the right reasons especially when the district struggled to navigate the temperamental Waters of covid she demonstrated compassion and Leadership at a time when it was needed so badly while working with her colleagues on the board to tackle

062educational issues Miss Quinn turned her service to the community to assist those also impacted by the pandemic she helped to form a social media campaign called cinamon Helping cinamon where she and a small group of volunteered helped to provide Goods to those in need from grocery pickups to baby formula collections Pharmacy deliveries to supply exchanges the group matched shortfalls in the community with those who were able to help her service to the community was featured in People magazine hold on I have proof during her six years on the board Miss Kum was instrumental in hoping to established districtwide programs in diversity equity and inclusion as a steadfast advocate for access to education for all she was a driving force in many of the behind the scenes decisions that helped pave the way for school equity

063and programmatic changes districtwide undoubtedly her most driving motivation and most proud role is that of mother and number one fan to cinnamon and soccer number 17 I think the greatest joy of service that I was able to witness firsthand was Miss Quinn with with the pride that she shared in handing her son his diploma at graduation last year as a decorated member of the class of 22 Aiden Quinn received prestigious scholarship to attend the University of Alabama where he's a freshman today seeing her efforts as a parent volunteer community member and a board member came full circle it reminded me of the vital role that all of our Board of Education members play in helping to assist our students cross the finish line and make the best in achieving their goals today Miss Quinn continues

064to Advocate on behalf of all of us in public education serving the New Jersey Education Association as the field organizer for the seven Southern counties of New Jersey I'm profoundly thankful that Katie Quinn chose to come to cinamon and make it a home and that she continues to serve as a role model for all of you in the audience our schools are a better place for her service thank you [Applause] Katie hold on we got we got Hardware we got Hardware this is for you to take a picture like a and I believe maybe in the back some members from uh Team Quinn and Minon are here if you could wave hello thank you for uh lending us her services for the past six years and being here this evening to see her recognized up

065next I'd like to ask Mr Dan Gaffney if he would come stand next to me all right over very Mr Dan Gaffney began his career at woodro Wilson High School in Camden City teaching English shortly after graduating from St Joseph's University gohawks his work then transitioned him to a coach and teacher at Cherokee High School followed by two long stin as an elementary principal in Southampton School number one and the Howard Yokum Elementary School in Maple Shade Mr Gaffney left his professional impact on the lenpy Regional High School District Southampton schools and the maple sh St School District along the way as a father of three wonderful children who went all the way through our sentiment and school district schools Dan and his wife Marge were constantly active at volunteering in both school and community

066events whether it was part of the hman school as band parents or at the local Boy Scouts the Gaffney became a fixture as Volunteers in cinon it was in July of 2016 when Mr Gaffney responded to a call from then board president Mrs Jee Cohen and superintendent of schools Dr salvator salvator luzy sorry that the events that led us to this evening first began to unfold because he could never say no to a community in need Mr Gaffney agreed to fill in for a short time as a board member was retiring midterm Mr Gaffney joined the board and ran for re-election the following year despite his intentions to only serve briefly on the board he was convinced to return and return once again during his time of service on the board Mr Gaffney filled many

067roles he served on all four standing committees of the board likewise Mr gley presently serves as the chair of the curriculum committee and former chair of the policy committee perhaps most importantly Mr Gaffney continues to tap into his professional and institutional knowledge coupled with his commitment to the students of cinon and serving as a staunch supporter of all District programs Dan has made a lifetime commitment to the value of strong community-based Public Schools as the H husband of a public school employee and the father of two Public School Employees Dan understands the intangible return on investment of treating staff as valued members of the community that they serve Dan truly loves our schools this town and what this board and District represent his service to the extended sentiments in community continues as well even as

068he continues even after his service on the board ends this year Dan remains deeply involved with various Boy Scout leadership programs throughout Burlington County and he volunteers as a part of the St Charles Catholic Church Dan retired officially from public schools in 2006 however in true Dan Gaffney fashion he was terrible at retirement working in so many roles since Dan took his educational talents to rcbc and lent his affable and personal traits servicing people during their greatest time of need however most recently Dan finally caved in after being sought after so many times to return to school administration and once again was called upon by a public school in need last month he returned to his old stomping grounds and presently serves as the inter room principle of Southampton School number one the students faculty

069and parents are so fortunate to have such a compassionate and capable leader at the helm for so many years I valued his advocacy support mentorship guidance and friendship and I thank him for all of the service to the students of cinamon and to our Board of Education congratulations Dan and actually if the members of the Gaffney family uh they were there when Dan was sworn in seven years ago and took a picture we're going to kind of try to recreate it I'm sorry to put you on the spot but if you don't mind coming up and snapping a picture we appreciate you're being here to support uh Mr Gaffney this evening grab one of them take another one some you guys first then us us we're going to we're going to hop in with you

089say and I do want to say that teachers can't be thanked enough so thank you for the Forum I'm speaking of as a parent of four children in the district one at each of our wonderful sentiments and schools I also a high school teacher in a local school district I speaking to you as a fierce advocate for my children and education in general the sentiments and teachers and counselors as I'm sure you know are topnotch they take time to get to know their students and are extremely responsive to parent questions and concerns this is not the case at all school districts now on to a more personal topic all of my te all of my children receive modifications and accommodations at every stage of the 504 and IEP process we have been met with openness

090support and the feeling that my child's needs were of the utmost utmost priority as I mentioned I'm a fierce advocate for my children and the teams have always worked to ensure my child's individual needs are met not simply a blanket list of accommodations some may say I have high standards and the special education and counseling teams have never let me down in Middle School Co hit my child hit and my child like many others was seriously impacted and her overall schooling situation spiral the incredible guidance team worked together along with her case manager to build my child up and get her through Middle School it was a struggle but the team somehow never gave up on her and continued to actively try new approaches to help her succeed some days I wondered how they kept

091being so supportive but they always tried to say today's a new day my child's now in high school and it's is in the study schills program this program is truly a game Cher for my child instead of sitting by terrified to ask questions continuing to be confused on content and receiving grades that do not reflect her ability she has a teacher to go to daily that can help her with content coping skills and provide a safe space for her to ask questions and grow as both a student as and a young adult having the same study skills teacher for all four years of high school is an added bonus because the children do not have to build brand new relationships every year this helps keep continuity in the students progress and allows the study skills

092teacher to do best to best guide the children I am so impressed with the special education supports here in cinamon that I regularly advocating for change in my own teaching District this program is irreplaceable because of the support provided my child has grown immensely already this school year and this has carried over into all aspects of our Liv lives I cannot praise the cens and teachers counselors and child study team members enough thank you thank you thank Youk anyone else any other members of the public wishing to address the board none all right um we move the comments from the board Mrs Turner there's a lot good evening congratulations to our talented students who performed so well tonight you set the atmosphere for a wonderful evening and a joyous holiday thank you to Mr Gaffney
